Chapter Five

Chapter Six

You would've expected a lot of people to step inside your chambers. Estrid, your father, brother, guards - but you would've never expected to see the tall, bulky and handsome frame of the man who haunted your dreams and occupied your mind on no end - Loki. You couldn't believe your eyes at first, blinking heavily and literally staring holes into him. "L-Loki?" You asked in disbelief; quite shocked. You didn't know how to feel about this. Feeling the urge to yell at him on one side. To tell him to go away and never come back. You wanted to let him know how much you hated him. Spit it right into his face. Though, on the other side, you couldn't deny the way your heart skipped more than just one beat, when you laid your eyes upon him; or when he gave you that smile.

"Hello, princess Y/N." Loki started, taking a bow. "I am sorry for disturbing you and being so rude to just barge in - and I'm certain you wish to know why I am here at all." The moment his deep, yet soft voice urged to your ears, your memory immediately took you back to the lake all those weeks ago. Especially to that one night, where he kissed you. A tingly feeling spread all throughout your belly at that thought. "I-I... Yes." More words weren't able to leave your lips. You were way too overwhelmed by all those feelings and thoughts coursing through your system - and by his sudden appearance.

"Well, first of all, I... I would like to apologise. I am the reason you are trapped inside your chambers. I regret informing your father. I really do, but I-I had no other choice. You must understand this. I had my duties and obligations, unfortunately. So, I beg of you... Please forgive me, my princess." His kind and gentle words touched you. There was, without a doubt, honesty swinging within his voice, telling you that he really meant what he said. This wasn't one of his macho shows, no... That was him, showing you his probably most vulnerable side. You could feel that he was truly sorry, but... Could you forgive him? It was a difficult question, but then you remembered, how you actually lied to him. You didn't tell him who you were. You kissed Loki, without him even knowing that you were the princess. Hence, you almost slept with him. You put on a mask and more or less fooled him. So... Was it fair to be still angry at him, when he wasn't angry at you anymore? Both, you and him made mistakes.

You looked up to meet his ruby eyes, nodding. "I understand you, prince Loki. I forgive you - and I-I hope you can forgive me, too." The prince's lips twitched into a smile; visibly relieved. "I forgave you already a long time ago, Y/N." You couldn't help the blush, which spread over your cheeks; his charming smile causing your heart to skip another beat. But the look in his eyes told you, that this wasn't the only reason why he was here today.

"You, uh... You didn't just come all the way from Jotunheim to apologise, did you?" Loki chuckled, shaking his head. "No, I didn't. You are right," he said, stepping closer. Blinking, you frowned, as the prince reached for your hand and gently - almost cautiously; afraid to make a mistake - took yours into his big one, swallowing it whole. You were confused and yet you felt those butterflies within your belly again, as he touched you; never wanting him to let go, because it felt so good. So right. As if your hand belonged right there. You saw that he was quite a bit nervous - something very unusual for the usually so confident and sassy prince, you thought. You could've sworn you saw his heart beating against his bare chest, as his stunning eyes met yours once more. "Y/N, I... I just couldn't stop thinking about you the past weeks. I tried to occupy my mind; take my thoughts elsewhere, but... I couldn't. I think about you day and night. In fact, I find myself thinking about you even at the most inopportune moments of the day. I was blind at first, didn't know what was going on, but then I realised... I... I love you, Y/N. Ever since those nights we spent together at the lake. I fell in love - hopelessly, and... And for some reason I feel as if a link exists between your heart and mine, and should that link be broken, either by distance or by time, then my heart would cease to beat and I would die."*

His words echoed in your head, repeating themselves over and over again. Loki is in love with you. Loki loves you. He is in love with you. Hearing this, caused your heart to almost beat out of your chest. He loves you. You never anticipated, that he would ever feel the same. That you could be more to him than just an 'adventure'. Another fling. Nothing more. But now... Now he told you that he loved you - and the feeling was mutual. You didn't want to admit to yourself and neither to Estrid, but it was true. You knew that now. You loved him, too.

"I-I really hope that my heart didn't betray me and that you are feeling the sa-" You didn't let Loki finish his sentence. Enough talking, you thought and freed your hand from his gentle grasp, wrapping both your hands around his neck. Standing on your tiptoes, you pulled him down and silenced him with a kiss. The second your lips collided with his, fireworks exploded within you. It felt so good to finally kiss him again. So right. Like home... It felt like home.

Loki sighed into the kiss, relieved. That was all he needed to know, in order to ask you the important question, which was still lingering on his mind. But first, he enjoyed the kiss; unable to resist the urge to pull you closer. So, the prince did just that, wrapping his strong arms around you. "I take that as a yes then." Loki chuckled breathlessly, after letting go of your alluring lips. "You better will." He smiled; couldn't help but to kiss you again. It was more than clear, that you loved the prince truly and wholeheartedly - and yet, there was still nervosity running through his veins, given the fact that he still had to ask you the probably most important question of both, yours and his life. "There's... There's something else, darling..." Loki started, tracing the clothed skin of your hips with his thumbs. You looked at him expectantly; waiting patiently for him to continue to speak. "A question I have to ask you..." "You may ask, my prince. Whatever it is." He took a breath, eyes never leaving yours. "I really hope this isn't too bold to ask, but... Would you like to marry me, princess Y/N?"

You blinked, couldn't quite believe the words which had just left Loki's lips. "M-Marry you?" He nodded. "I know this is quite rushed, but yes. I really wish to marry you." "I-I..." "If you need more time or don't want to marry me, it's completely fine." You shook your head. "N-No! I... I do want to marry you! It's just so... surprising. I'm a bit overwhelmed." Loki's brows furrowed in compassion. "I'm so sorry, my love, for catching you off-guard." You squeezed his shoulders, giving him a soft smile. "It's the best surprise since years. I always wished to marry out of love - not because I had to. I just hope my father agrees to this..." "He does, my princess. I already talked to him; asked for your hand in marriage." Your eyes widened. "Y-You did?" "Yes. We have his blessing - and my father's blessing." A light-hearted giggle left your lips, as you felt happiness flooding your veins. Was this really just happening? Or were you dreaming? "So, we are going to get married?" "We are, darling. I'm never letting you go again. I don't want another prince to have you. It's time for me to make you mine."

"And that's how I met your father." You finished telling the love story of you and Loki to your eight-year-old twins, Áki and Váli. The boys were sitting on the fur, criss-crossed in front of you and the fireplace with wide eyes, hanging on your every word. Of course, you told the story more 'romantically' and left out the juicy, 'dirty' and 'dangerous' details, of course. They weren't meant for children's ears. "Wow..." Váli gasped. "So you are actually a warrior, mommy?" Asked Áki. You chuckled, running your hands through both boy's curls. "If you wish to call it that, yes." "Is that why daddy fell in love with you?" You had to suppress a giggle at your son's sweet, innocent question. "Perhaps, sweetheart, but I'm afraid you have to ask your father." "Ask me what?" You flinched as Loki's voice was suddenly echoing through your chambers. He had been away on royal duty for three days and had just come home.

"Daddy!" Both boys jumped up; excited to see their father again. "Hello, little princes." Loki smiled and squatted down, opening his arms for them to run into - what they did, of course. Your husband lifted them up easily, cradling each son in one arm. "I missed you." "I missed you, too, daddy," Váli whispered, cuddling closer to Loki.

Both boys didn't leave Loki's side from then on; clinging to him. He spent some quality time with his sons, of course, before he sent them to play outside a bit. He had missed his own flesh and blood, without a doubt - but he had also missed you.

"What was it Áki should ask me?" The king asked, wrapping both his arms around you, as you stood in front of the mirror, getting ready for the festive dinner tonight. You smiled at the mention of what you had told the twins. "Well, I was telling them our love story, because they asked me how I met you; being all curious about this and Áki was very enthralled by the fact that I was a 'warrior'. He asked me if you fell in love with me because of that... I told him to ask you." Loki chuckled. "So, you told them our fairytale-like love story?" "I did - but of course I left out certain... details." "Certain details?" "Yes... Certain details, which are not meant for children's ears." Your husband spun you quickly around in his arms; a cheeky smile spreading over his lips. He knew of course exactly what you were talking about.

"I should've devoured you back then." You looked up at Loki, giving him a playful frown. "I beg your pardon, my king?" Another low chuckle left his lips; hands dipping to skim the clothed skin of your hips. "Back at the lake. I should've ravished you. It wouldn't have been wrong, given the fact that I became your husband anyway." A loud giggle rumbled through your chest, causing Loki's heart to skip a beat. Oh how much he loved you. "Good point, my love, but we didn't know that back then. And we both know that we shouldn't have risked it. I did what was right." "I know, my sweetness, I know." "Besides, you didn't even know who I was." Your husband nodded. "That is true, but it wouldn't have mattered. Even if you had just been a maiden, working on a farm, I would've made you my princess. My wife. The mother of my children. My queen, you are the only woman I truly ever wanted. You being the princess of Asgard just played into our cards. Nothing more, nothing less." You wrapped both your arms around his neck, smiling and blushing. "I love you, my king. More than words can say."

I just don't understand one thing in Thor. Why did Loki lie to Thor about Odin's death, and Frigga forbidding his return?

When I heard the part where he says it was cruel of Odin to put the hammer within reach knowing Thor could lift it, it mirrored Loki egging Thor on during the beginning. And I thought may be the reason is much deeper than the surface level oh he wants Thor to get in trouble and because Loki wants the throne... I thought this part was him giving Thor the incentive to get the fuck better and shape up... To hammer in that his actions have consequences, consequences that he can understand and relate to on a personal level. But without a hope of being able to return to Asgard... I was unsure Thor would take that incentive instead of wallowing in his regrets...

So yeah I am unsure now. (I do know loki felt bad though. His eyebrow quirked up- something he only does when he feels and expresses his love for Thor)

consider this... LOKI was given confirmation of his suspicions about his origins after thor was banished. thor did not know.

and what was the reason for thor’s banishment? his bloodlust for the slaughter of the jotuns overcame all reason, and he was only pulled back from it by the arrival of odin, who put a stop to it all.

what do you imagine LOKI might have expected thor would do to him, upon discovering that the brother he was raised with was actually a monster (sic) in disguise? LOKI himself struggled to accept it.

i think he was just focused on having thor stay as far from asgard as he could be, for as long as LOKI could keep him there, for the sake of his own safety or life. and he might actually have expected odin to die while in the odinsleep anyhow, given what frigga said about it to LOKI.

LOKI also knew thor unfit to rule, and still sought to protect asgard from his childish tempers and whims... and now that the opportunity for real authority had somehow fallen in his lap, he had the chance to attempt both ends.

he discouraged thor from any dreams of redemption because it seemed to him the course with the least risk of harm. one person’s feelings over the safety or lives of many.

it also really frustrates me sometimes when i want to talk about One Specific Aspect of loki's whole deal but i can't find a more specific word for it than "power" or "hierarchy".

like, it *is* about space racism, but for the vast majority of his life he and most of the people around him didn't *know* that. and it *is* about class/rank... kind of...? but in a weird paradoxical way where he's still nominally a prince, and maybe he's arguably being treated like a servant but even if he is he's a pretty high-ranking servant, used for politics rather than manual labour... but also at the same time, as a jotun he's lowlier than anyone on asgard and the only one (that we know of) who might actually be better described as a slave than a servant, because if he was "stolen" then he is property... and none of it's really summarisable in any particular way because this has always just expressed itself as people being Weird About Loki in particular. like there is SO much secrecy and hypocrisy surrounding this power dynamic that odin has had to make loki into his own unique personal category of disempowered outsider. but also. maybe that's just what a combination of domestic and peer abuse looks like. but it's still hardly a typical relationship when your household and its power dynamics envelop the whole kingdom because your father is THE ALLFATHER. hhhhhhhhhh

anyways was thinking of a thor ragnarok rewrite last night as sleep refused to take me. obviously it can't be exactly like actual ragnarok bc marvel/mcu's norse stuff is..nothing like actual norse lore but i figured it could still have some more similarities than what the actual movie did.

(also if i were to rewrite the movie this isn't actually what id do, this was just. idk. what i was thinkin about as i was desperate to actually falll asleep).

anyways i figured this rewrite would actually work best if it rewrote the end of tdw first- loki gets stabbed by kruse and passes out for a while (rather than being able to pick himself back up in secret like what actually happened) and in that time odin senses that loki isn't dead and sends some guards to collect him. since loki technically broke the law *again* (committed treason, escaped jail, etc), he can enforce even more punishment, especially now that frigga is dead and she can't do anything about it. That, combined with some prophecy from midgard (or maybe asgard, idk) as an excuse added justifying reason, he sentences loki to the worst thing he can think up: to be bound against a rock with a snake dripping venom on him, his lips sewn shut so he can never lie again, forced to be in his jotun form, for all of eternity. In the deepest dungeon.

Thor obviously doesn't know about any of this, because he thinks loki dead.

so loki is taken, bound to a rock (idk if it's really work to have him bound with organs tho, since he doesn't have children in the mcu. maybe it's his..pet's? or maybe just chain. idk.), a snake coiled above him, seiðr bound, lips sewn shut, and his æsir form taken. He is completely alone, save the guards outside the chamber.

i don't really ship logyn in the mcu, (bc she doesn't exist in the mcu and their relationship feels to me like it would span for several centuries prior, so just randomly introducing her in one movie would seem strange to me), but i follow some people who do, so i wondered how i could incorporate that anyways, and make it not seem too strange.

Sigyn is one of the guards who has a shift guarding loki's chambers. She feels awful about it though, and eventually decides she has to do something to help. She ventures into the chamber and decides to catch the dripping venom with her helmet.

She also tries to cut the stitches from lokis lips, but when one string is cut, it doubles and repierces the skin, now twice the strength. She tries again, cutting them all at once this time (rather than individually), and grabs them all at once and pulls them out before they can multiply and repair themselves (luckily this time it works). She almost regrets it, though, as now she has to hear loki scream himself hoarse, and she can't do anything else to ease the pain.

she stays for several weeks/months/idk, holding the helmet above loki, having to empty it every so often. Perhaps she gets to know loki in this time, perhaps she doesn't. Perhaps she notices a certain brand on his shoulder, perhaps she does not. Perhaps she knew loki vaguely before, and now muses to herself what could have possibly changed him. Perhaps she didn't know him before, and doesn't muse. I don't know. But eventually she decides she needs to find and tell thor.

as hard as it is, she leaves loki to suffer alone (she tries to see if she can leave the helmet or fashion some contraption to make sure the poison cannot get in his eyes, but she cannot). After some searching and asking, she finds the mourning sullen prince thor and tells him what has occurred. Thor, now filled with joy, rage, guilt, horror, and sadness, breaks loki out with sigyn.

Loki is a mess. He has gone blind- whether temporarily or permanently is unknown- and has visible burns from the acid venom. His hairs a mess and his skin sweaty and thin. You can see his rib cage with how thin he's become. He wasn't allowed much clothes at the start of his punishment, but what few he had have been burned by the venom as well. He can't walk. He's barely conscious, and what little bit he is is just filled with delirium. They basically have to carry him.

They hide away from asgard (or at least the palace). And then ragnarok gets unleashed and they have to fix it etc and in the end they realize that it wasn't literally loki's being freed that incited ragnarok, but it was necessary for him to be freed so they could help stop/fix it/lessen the damage etc idk i was pretty tired at this point i wasn't thinking of details. anyways

idk if that made any sense lol but i'll tag the logyn people i follow/was thinking of

Because I'm Bored:

Where do I rank in terms of MCU Loki Apologism?

Things I think Loki was justified in doing:

1. Killing Laufey-For all he knows, this was the man that abandoned him to die from exposure. This is revenge in its purest form and ALSO a way to show his loyalty to Asgard and Odin. And based on the original script, Loki was illegitimate and an unwanted runt abandoned to die (I also think he is not fully Jotun, and I think this played into WHY he was abandoned).

2.Lying to Thor about Odin’s death and his banishment-Loki just discovered he is a Frost Giant, like the ones Thor swore to kill, has been shown to have killed at the slightest provocation, and Asgard thinks of as monsters. Making sure Thor does not return is self-preservation. As a closeted person, I find the idea that Loki should have told Thor or known he would understand, ridiculous.Have you all not heard of living situations with bigoted relatives with a history of violence?

3. Nearly killing Thor with the Destroyer-Notice his previous attempt to keep Thor away did not involve violence and would have sufficed if Thor’s friends had not interfered… Say you have a brother that hates people like you, with a history of violent behavior towards people like you, and with the ability to fry the fuck out of you or smash you into puree with his magic hammer. Would you like to have that brother around?

4. Impersonating Odin and sending Odin to a retirement home-It’s self-preservation. Frigga’s no longer there to plead for his life. And I find it hilarious he was the only one to give Odin a taste of his own medicine. GOOD FOR HER! And how the fuck would he have known about Hela? Odin had been able to break through Loki’s magic, but he just decided to chill on Earth for some reason, and dump Hela’s existence on them.

By the way, I saw an interesting theory that Odin remained on Earth to strand Hela on Midgard so that she’d lay waste to Midgard instead of Asgard, but Loki calling the Bifrost changed that, ironically saving Earth and dooming Asgard. Technically, that would mean Loki unknowingly doomed Asgard, but I am not mad. How much like Odin to shuck his problems away for others to deal with.

5.Escaping from the TVA the first chance he gets. Self-preservation.

6. Being the Villain. Technically, that’s the TVA’s fault. They’ve pruned Lokis whenever they veer away from their ordained path. LOL I feel like Villain PR saying this and I am laughing my ass off. And although it’s for shits and giggles, it’s technically true in the MCU?

Loki’s not justified in:

1. Letting the Jotuns in for shits and giggles. I have seen way to many people claim it’s because he cared for Asgard, and that’s bullshit. He was jealous of Thor and he has no qualms sacrificing others (like the handful of dead guards and Jotuns) to fulfill his plans.

2.Attempted genocide of Jotunheim. Self-explanatory. He was only wronged by one Jotun, not the entire realm, and even if the entire realm had wronged him, genocide is NEVER a warranted option.

3. Cutting Sif’s hair. That’s just unnecessarily cruel. I headcannon he likes to sabotage relationships.

4. The attempted betrayal at Sakaar. Not sure what was going on through his head at that point. I think he got angry because Thor compared him to Sakaar, which he actually hates, and seemed to have given up on him. Or does he think keeping Thor and himself on Sakaar will keep them safer because they won’t confront Hela? I will go with a bit of both. I could DEFINITELY go into Villain PR mode and argue he was justified in trying to keep Thor “safe” in Sakaar because the Revengers didn’t really have a plan other than “go back to Asgard and try to fight Hela and die trying”. But I still don’t personally think it was “justified.”

5. Stabbing Thor. I just included it because it’s not justified based on context, since it came out of nowhere. But I would not use it to condemn how “Evil” Loki has ALWAYS BEEN in those posts complaining about Loki’s woobification. I would need more context on how grave an injury that would be for Asgardians. Is it some typical childhood game/fights wound? Asgardians survive being Hulk smashed, the void, impaled, and a freaking Neutron star. A stab seems like a slap in comparison. It has the same level of justification as slapping your sibling in the face when you were a kid. Unjustified, but not a big deal.

Things I am on the fence about:

1. Whatever the fuck happened for him to end up with Thanos. It’s unclear how much was him and how much was the mind stone, coercion, or some other kind of mindfuckery (there are altered memories (being yeeted by Thor into the Void rather than letting go) and that scene with the Other implying threats, past torture, psychic pain, or future torture). I think he wasn’t exactly innocent nor entirely willing. I think he saw Earth as his brother’s ant farm that he will fuck around with out of revenge, he approached Thanos willingly, but then the Black Order gained too much leverage and control on him, and the situation snowballed out of his control into an avalanche.

Another head-cannon I have is that Loki actually died in the void, but was brought back from Hel. He was willing to do anything to avoid returning there, and it’s why he made sure to try to die in battle in TDW and IW. The need to avoid Hel cultivated a fucked up sense of gratefulness and vulnerability that was exploited by the Black Order (maybe I will write it sometime). I think this because him and Thanos talk too much about resurrections and dying multiple times. Either of my Head cannons imply threats and therefore coercion, even if the Word-Of-God mind stone influence is not involved. But we also don’t know the how and why Loki ended up with Thanos.

2. I don’t think I can blame him for Frigga’s death. I know he blames himself, and he definitely had some malicious intent when giving directions (not towards Frigga). Giving someone the directions to the stairs shouldn’t exactly change much? It’s not like he plotted with the Dark Elves and disabled Asgard’s defenses. The elves were tracking the Aether and would have found it eventually, and Frigga was protecting Jane and willing to sacrifice herself for Jane. Frigga’s death is more on Jane for being reckless and fucking around with unknown phenomena without a scrap of PPE or caution, becoming a mcguffin for the film’s entirety. Jane has the common sense of white people from horror movies. Woman has no braincells. There, I fucking said it.

3. I don’t know how to feel about the opening scene in IW and I hate it. I just think it was a terrible plan and a waste of character development. And we don’t even know if it had any significant positive effects. It was both self-sacrificial and selfish nonetheless. Did it keep Thanos from killing more Asgardians? Did it only save Thor, and was that the only thing Loki cared about? If so, Loki sacrificed the entire universe for his brother. Very in-character, but it was a waste of sacred timeline Loki.

Things other people were justified in:

1. Heimdall being suspicious of Loki and attempting to behead Loki as the king regent. Heimdall was suspicious of the blind spots in his vision. Who can hide from him? Loki. And then he caught Loki quite red-handed.

2. I don’t know why Thor gets so much shit for not knowing what’s up with Loki in Avengers, and I doubt he could help him or that Loki thinks he would or could help him in the first place.

3. The Hulk giving him the ragdoll treatment. It’s hilarious and the best part of the movie. And I mean, he did wreak havoc in NYC.

4. Thor electrocuting Loki in Ragnarok. Loki was about to betray Thor. And again, they are pretty hardy. Loki survived the Hulk, the void, and impalement. Enough said. Could this have ended horribly for Loki? Of course and there are wonderful DEAD DOVE fics about it.

5. Sylvie being angry after he broke the Tempad and got drunk. Self-explanatory. How the fuck does this ever get called “abusive”? They both could have died because of Loki's tomfoolery.

6. Sylvie killing HWR and sending Loki away. It was not “abusive”, she’s barely known Loki for IDK how long. Compare that to having a goal for millenia. And she sent him away because she didn’t want to kill him.

・He makes sure that you’re always safe, because you are very very small compared to him

・Always making sure you’re having a good time, no matter where you are “We can leave if you no longer desire to be here, my love.”

・Fun-loving and always wants you to have a smile on your face

・You met at a wedding you were working at. Thor and Jane (in this universe) were getting married and you were employed to serve the food and drinks.

・It was verging on ridiculous, how much food had been prepared. Even though Loki and only a few of his close companions were the only frost giants at this event, they had overcompensated for their food and drinks.

・Your first encounter with him was surprising; he was flirtatious but mindful. Knowing that humans were much more fragile than he.

・However, he was a prince, and you were expected to treat him as such. But there was something so enticing about him that you wanted to be in his presence more and more.

・The venue where the wedding was held, also fronted as a restaurant. And whenever Loki visited Thor, that’s where he insisted on going. “Loki, why is it always this place? There are many other food vendors we can try!” “I ... really like the pasta...”

・Jane caught on, Thor was oblivious. “Ask. her. out.” Jane had prompted. Loki’s cheeks darkened; a prince embarrassed.

・He did not want to scare you away, but Jane insisted he needed to be the one to talk to you.

・And he did, somehow getting your number but not being 100% what to do with it. Since the technology wasn’t the same in his world. And yet, that was the great thing about having a scientist friend. Jane made a way for you to communicate from your differing realms.

・You were stunned; caught off guard that you would even be considered. Since you came from two COMPLETELY different worlds. But it worked. Somehow, weirdly enough it worked.

・You usually sleep on him. It’s like having the cold side of the pillow always. And it actually helps with headaches

・Likes it when you stroke his face

・He makes a lot of inappropriate jokes

・Likes to take you to his realm, his home. He also likes showing you the other realms; making you feel so amazed at this life.

・Teaches you about his culture and how he grew up “Yes, and they actually throw you over the cliff to see-”

・You guys get creative ... you have to, I mean Jotun Loki is huge and it is physically impossible for him to be inside you.

・BUT, I do think that Jotun Loki would approach a witch or wizard/warlock, maybe even Doctor Strange, to make him a potion that allows him to shrink to human size. He still has his physical attributes of blue skin, red eyes etc. But the potion allows him to shrink as much as he can (which is to 6′9, compared to his usual 10′)

・The potion worked for only a limited time...but that didn’t matter. Even though vaginal sex was great, you and Loki came up with ideas to keep both of you satisfied.

・There’s a lot of rubbing, humping, and toys involved.

・Frost giant Loki likes to make you laugh during sex - you’ll be in the heat of the moment and he’ll lick inside your ear.

・Oh he does like licking though, just licking everywhere ...

Chapter 1

Summary: This is basically an AU story about Loki, prince of Jotunheim, and the reader, princess of Asgard, meeting in the Utgardhall's library.

Warnings: fluff and Jotun Loki :)

Words: 1315

Your older brother Thor was meant to rule Asgard one day and you were chosen to maintain and forge diplomatic relations with the other realms, at least that was the hope Odin still clung to. You couldn't have been more different than your brother, although also being a formidable fighter and somewhat social if required, you rather preferred the company of a good book and the quiet of the night while sitting in the library absorbing all the stories and knowledge available. You were also known to cause a lot of mischief around the palace with your pranks but the fact that you somehow managed to talk your way out of it most of the time made the Allfather think that, some day, you'd actually use those skills for the good of the realm. Which lead you to this very moment, walking down the long halls of Utgardhall alongside Odin and king Laufey who was one of your father's most precious allies. Your feet suddenly stopped dead in their tracks in front of an open door as your eyes spotted the many bookshelves of the palace library. Your eyes sparkled at the marvelous sight of the old leather-bound tomes stacked neatly together, drawing you into the room as if possessed by a spell until you heard the Allfather call your name, followed by an amused chuckle from Laufey.

"I see your daughter treasures the written word more than the spoken one. May I propose to let her do so for now, old friend", the king's hand rested on Odin's shoulder, "she will need to hold negotiations soon enough, she should have the opportunity to enjoy Utgardhall's library today."

You paced slowly through the room, your fingertips brushing of the spines of the carefully bound and neatly stacked books. Asgard's library was clearly bigger and brighter but this one left you in awe with the sunlight shining through its large stained-glass window, bursting into an opalescent cataract of azure, emerald, gold and ivory. The image kindled a cozy feeling deep inside you as if you'd be sitting at a crackling fire enjoying its comforting warmth while a snow storm raged outside. Your eyes strayed from the window to the bookshelf on the left, stopping at the sight of a protruding and rather big book, covered in time-worn black leather. You took it off the shelf, running your fingers along the ice blue runes on the cover. You learned to read and write older runes from your tutors when you were younger but these seemed so different from the ones you studied. The shapes looked somewhat familiar until they seem to twist into something much older. You carefully opened the book, skimming through the faded pages as you tried to concentrate your gaze on the many runes and the few beautifully drawn and colourful illustrations at the beginning of each chapter.

"I wonder what this is", you mumbled absorbed in your thoughts.

"The tales of how my people and this realm came to be", a gentle male voice spoke up behind you.

Startled your hands let go of the book and it fell towards the ground, a big blue hand catching it right before it could hit the floor. You gulped uncomfortably at the sudden clumsiness as you slowly turned around. Your eyes widened at the sight of the rather good looking Jotun standing right next to you. He was obviously taller than you but due to being bent forward, his face was at the same height as yours, close enough to feel his hot breath fan over your blushing cheeks. Every part of mind screamed at you not to but you kept staring at him without a single word leaving your usually eloquent mouth. Your eyes traveled from his dark lips, over the pale ridged markings up to his ruby eyes staring straight into your soul.

"I'm rather fond of this book so I'd prefer for it to not be dropped on the ground", he chuckled, a teasing grin spreading across his lips while he straightened up.

"I apologise", there was a crack in your voice, "given my love for books I can assure you that I'm usually more careful but you startled me."

"Well, we Frost Giants are known to frighten others," a sad expression spread across his face while he tried to smile, eyes glued to the book he was still holding.

You watched him carefully, intrigued by the depth of his sadness emanating from him as he spoke and it stirred something deep inside you, a sudden urge to to show kindness and bring back that grin from earlier. You didn't know this man but meeting him in a place that some of your fellow Aesir would have mockingly described as your natural habitat, witnessing his endearing humorous way to talk about books, it connected the two of you in a way neither of you could have fathomed.

"Can you read it?", you asked, pointing at the book.

"Well what kind of Jotun would I be if I couldn't?", he snickered.

"Read it to me", you requested, stretching your arms up so one hand could reach and carefully open the book he was still holding while the other motioned to a large divan in the corner of the room, "please."

The Jotun didn't look at you, his eyes remained firmly on the first page, but just before turned around to walk to the divan, you could spot the corners of his mouth twitching into a gentle smile.

"Well how could I refuse if I'm being asked by such a beautiful lady."

You felt the heat creep up your cheeks as you sat next to him. Despite the Frost Giants being welcome in Asgard and not considered enemies, they were still a rather unusual sight in your realm, with rumours circulating amongst the noble families about how brutish and uncivilized the Giants could be and yet here you were in the heart of Jotunheim, sitting next to this particular Jotun reading you the origin story of his kind.

"There was in times of old, where Ymir dwelt, nor sand nor sea, nor gelid waves", his soft but deep voice filled the room.

"Wait", goosebumps forming on your arm as your hand moved up touching his cold blue skin.

His ruby eyes studied you curiously while you flicked your fingers, an emerald mist wisping from the tips, floating in front of you and slowly transforming into a bright faintly translucent image of the words he just read out of the book. His mouth opened slightly at the sight, he'd seen spells many times, he was even capable to cast some himself, but the entire encounter with you, leading up to this moment as you used your seidr to make it seem as the story of his kind was alive, gifting him with the opportunity to see the story come to life filled his heart with a happiness he never believed to be real. It was the random act of kindness from a stranger that filled his eyes with tears of joy.

"I'm Loki", he almost sobbed, not daring to look at you.

Your eyes widened at the sudden realisation that you were sitting next to Laufey's son, the next king of Jotunheim whom you just asked to read to you. You murmured your name in between hitched breaths, shifting nervously on the divan.

"It is a pleasure meeting you, princess", he almost whispered and his gaze finally shifted to your delicate frame next to him.

Your eyes met and while your face felt like it was burning, you could have sworn to detect a slight shade of pink on his blue cheeks before you nodded and put your concentration back on your seidr.

"Earth existed not, nor heaven above, 'twas a chaotic chasm, and grass nowhere.", he continued calmly, unable to hide a content smile.

Notes: I'm not sure if this is headed anywhere^^ I'm very hesitant if I should add more chapters, especially since I still have 2 ongoing series, 1 even about Loki, that I somehow neglect all the time xD

Thor was shown all arrogant in the beginning of Thor 1 and people always talk about it but none of them mention how Thor humbled down the very moment and looked like a kicked puppy when Odin yelled at him that he has betrayed his loved ones.

Thor's arrogance was mostly bc of him trying to live up to all the expectations that was put upon him from the start, crown prince Thor, heir to the throne, protector of all the realms, big brother Thor. Thor can't be weak, Thor can't be nervous, Thor has to set an example before everyone.

I don't even think that Thor considered loki lesser than him, for him Loki was his equal.

Loki thought Thor was getting more attention from Odin when his brother was getting burdened with more responsibilities and duties while Loki either studies or engaged in mischief for most of the time. Sad

YES!!!! “kicked puppy” is how i always describe thor in that scene 😭 the thing about thor, even when he is being arrogant and impulsive, is that he never acts with any real malice. he was pissed at the jotuns for interrupting his coronation, and it was petty, yes, but like…enemies of the throne attacked their weapons vault in broad daylight? thor was not wrong in saying that it was an act of war. it was. and you’re RIGHT. as soon as odin starts yelling thor realizes that his actions were rash and fueled by anger and confusion and he literally starts crying when odin tells him that he had betrayed his loved ones and friends. “you cannot even protect your friends, how can you hope to protect a kingdom?”

and YEAH !!! every single time thor expresses any kind of ambition or rage, he immediately turns to odin for reassurance. “just as you did father” when he’s a kid to “just as they feared you” to “let‘s finish them together!!” right in the heat of battle. thor literally just wants odin’s approval

and no, thor definitely does not see loki as lesser than himself. loki is quite literally the only one who is ever actually able to talk sense into thor. thor seeks council from loki and loves him so fucking much

yeah :/ it’s kind of a classic miscommunication. loki wants what thor has (odin’s attention) and thor wants what loki has (odin’s lack of attention) and neither of them realize they’d be better off without their father anywhere near them

So far Jake Doubleyoo’s version of Loki is one of my favorites. The line “Wow this problem was actually super easy to fix. I wonder how I can ruin this situation for myself?” is perfect Loki.

Like most people who take an interest in Norse Mythology I went through the expected stages of Loki interpretations; He’s evil. No he’s actually good. He’s tragic. He’s actually a misunderstood hero.

But the truth is he’s just a trickster god who thinks he is too smart for his own good sometimes. He keeps doing stuff just because he thought it’d be funny or to see what would happen and well, he finds out what happens. He cuts Sif’s hair off for no reason while she’s sleeping and Thor immediately knows he was the culprit because he does shit like that all the time and when he’s told to fix it he keeps digging himself into worse trouble AFTER FIXING THE PROBLEM.

And thanks to Hollywood people think of Odin as a Zeus type but in reality Odin is a trickster god too. He and Loki have a lot in common and it makes sense that they’re blood brothers. In case you don’t know, blood brothers are men who were so close they decided to mix their blood, usually by cutting or pricking themselves and pushing the wounds together. They do a lot of the same stuff, only Odin is more focused on learning while Loki just wants to party.

I know “Loki turns evil because the gods treat him so badly” is a popular interpretation but if you actually sit down and read the texts you could just as easily interpret it as “Loki keeps fucking around and finding out and is mad that his actions have consequences” because the texts are so vague you have to do a lot of reading between the lines. Some texts even contradict each other. In one text both of Loki’s parents are jotun. In another his mother is a god. You can literally read the texts and their many translations in a million ways.

I personally like the version of Loki we get in the comic series Valhalla. In that version he is a trickster god to the bone who does stuff for shits and giggles or because he thinks he’s above the law. He’s never truly evil but he can’t be trusted either. You get a lot of funny scenes where he’s freaking out because the gods are onto him and he’s trying to talk his way out. Also, for the Aces out there, he’s implied to be asexual in this version. He does the sex sometimes but only to reach a goal.

This version is the base for a lot of Loki interpretations in Scandinavia and is worth a read.

I would love to see Odin headcanons, he’s my favorite god king. I love how he’s both logical and also a warrior

hmm ok i did a lot of thinking on this ask and i think i have some stuff!

first of all. yes, as you said, i think Odin is a very logical guy... maybe too logical at times. i don't see him as being very emotional or sentimental, he just does what he knows will serve him best.

above all things, i think Odin is ambitious. super super ambitious. he craves knowledge which i feel is just another term for power, but not power in terms of how much land you own but power in terms of "knowledge is power" power.

i think Odin hates to lose. he needs to come out on top every time. as a result, he has a terrible anger. we know this already from the punishment of Loki-- i mean, he had to be seriously angry to do what he did to Narfi and Vali.

while he is a bookworm, Odin is also a warrior. he loves to fight and clash swords with another. given the viking tradition of wanting to die in battle, i think Odin prizes fighters and looks down on those who do not wish to fight.

that's not to say that Odin doesn't like peace. this is very important too. but i think Odin likes a balance of it. he doesn't shy away from war, or desperately try to avoid it if he knows he can't.

that's actually how i sort of hc Odin to have met Loki. i think, in the beginning days of the Aesir, Odin went to Jotunheim to maybe take over it, and in a recon mission, he got caught by the giants and was imprisoned.. in prison he met Loki,, a trickster full of guile that Odin admired.

i think they became friends after this point, much to Frigg's annoyance, and of course, Loki joined Odin in Asgard. i like to think about a "peace" treaty between Jotunheim and Asgard to outlaw any outright wars from either side, and that Loki, being of Jotun blood, was there to facilitate matters.

in terms of Frigg and Odin. i like the idea that Frigg was Odin's second-in-command in their early days. i realise this has no basis in lore but i just love the idea of Frigg being a warrior like Odin.

i don't think they were "heavily" in love, but Odin did admire her more than any other lover of his, and Frigg also admired Odin, so she accepted his proposal to be Queen. and i think she does an awesome job at it.

in saying that, i think they are far more in love with each other at the beginning of their relationship than at the end of it.

in terms of Baldr, Hodr, and Hermod. i hc that Baldr and Hodr are twins, though Baldr is the older of them. they are Frigg's first children but not Odin's, however, since Frigg is Odin's wife, Baldr is the "crown prince".

Hodr is blind from birth. i think that Frigg has always loved both children equally. i think Odin has a preference for Baldr because Baldr is like, the most perfect guy in every way, and Odin has a lot of high hopes for him,, and i do think this affects Hodr.

i don't think Odin intends to do this, but as i said, he is very logical. he knows that Hodr is blind and cannot participate in a battle as Baldr can. he knows also that Hodr was born second and will likely never become crown prince in Baldr's place. so he feels it is best for Hodr to stay indoors and he doesn't really dedicate too much time to teaching Hodr to use a sword, as he does with Baldr.

but, i do think Odin loves Hodr. Hodr, i think, is quite smart and i like the idea of him having an aptitude for runes and history moreso than Baldr. i think Odin would spend a lot of time with him to discuss such things. the death of both children is a tremendous loss that changes Odin and the rest of Asgard for the worse.

in terms of the rest of Odin's children by other women. i think Odin has a lot of kids primarily for political reasons. all of them have a home in Asgard and i love the idea that all of them get along with Frigg and her children... there are literally no quarrels about who's the better son or the better lover or anything like that. i don't think Odin would indulge it. i don't think Frigg likes Odin's various affairs, but i think she has always known that that side of him exists and is at peace with it. i also like the idea that Frigg and Odin are not each other's first loves..

i think Frigg might have had a "wilder" streak in her youth, when she was just a warrior and little more, but stops after becoming Queen because it no longer interests her; being a queen, a warrior, and a mother occupies her time in a far better way. i say this largely because i'm sick of there being loyal, modest queens with uncontrollable kings for husbands. i would like there to be a couple who start on "equal footing".

I find it incredibly fascinating that the entire plot of Thor and basically what started the Avengers and all subsequent movies revolved around Loki finding out he's actually a Jotun and yet it has never came up in any real capacity even once since then in the canon (and by that I mean I'm not including What If because it's by definition an AU).

What I mean is the fact that he's Jotun has absolutely no consequences on the plot at all after Thor. Like absolutely fucking zero. You could even have chosen anything else actually in Thor as the reason he turn out to be the antagonist and it would have the same consequences. Hell, you can take the entire Jotun part out and just make him resentful of Odin's obviously preference of Thor and it's 100% the same plot.

I find it even more fascinating how such a major part of fan work is his identity as a Jotun and even more so how fucked up it was that this was hidden from him for so long. Marvel missed such a beautiful opportunity to really go in depth about Loki's trauma and I find it beautiful that the fans keep on delivering. Because to me that's one of the most interesting part of who Loki is. Thank god for all of you lovely people who explore what being Jotun means to Loki. You're doing the most important work ☺️

How do you HC the conversation where Thor finds out Loki is a Jotun foundling went?

Oh this is a VERY interesting question, and not one I have a full answer to yet.

First of all, since some people have very understandably suggested otherwise - I do think Thor knows. No, he never acknowledges Loki's species specifically, he just talks about "adoption"... but A) I don't think Odin would send Thor out in The Avengers without telling him everything he told Loki, because otherwise he'd be handing Loki a way to manipulate Thor; and B) Thor looks *decidedly* anguished (actually close to tears!) when Loki is talking about ~mindless beasts pretending to be people~ in The Avengers, which would make no sense if Loki were really only talking about Bruce, a mortal Thor's only just met.

So I think it's clear that Thor knows that Loki is Jotun and understands that internalised space-racism is a huge part of what's "wrong with" Loki. He just doesn't know how to help, so, in classic Odin fashion, he's avoiding it for fear of making it worse. (And probably also wrestling with his own lingering space-racism, guilt, denial, etc.)

As for the conversation itself... I'm not sure. I do think it happened very promptly, because Odin was right there and Thor was devastated and confused and would demand Answers. What the hell just happened to my brother?!

I think realising that he's been lied to his entire life by both his parents would be a major blow to Thor, after his trust has already been shattered by his father apparently leaving him on Earth to die and by, uh, pretty much everything Loki did. On its own, the lie wouldn't be as powerful to Thor as it was to Loki, but in context... Thor's entire world has been turned upside-down repeatedly in a few days. He lost his home and identity, he thought his father was dead, he thought his brother was going to kill him, now his brother IS dead and perhaps he never even knew him... He just has no stability left at all.

And I think that's why he expresses such faith in Odin in their final conversation: "There will never be a wiser king than you, nor a better father." It seems like a really odd thing to say after everything that's just happened, and a lot of people get outraged on Loki's behalf, but... I think it makes sense, psychologically speaking. From Thor's perspective, questioning Odin's will was what nearly ruined his life and ended his brother's. The lies plus the exile make it suddenly really clear just how far Odin is willing to go to enforce his power over his children, and Thor is the only child he has left. What further disasters could further resistance bring? So Thor gives in, and chooses to believe what he's giving into must be good and wise and necessary, because he just can't go on otherwise.

(Thor often reminds me of a quote I once read about how abused children hating themselves is really a survival strategy, because their parents have such power over them that they're effectively their entire world. So, from the child's perspective: if the child is "bad" but the parents are "good", then it is at least within the child's power to try to be better; but if the parents are "bad" while the child is "good", then the world itself is broken, and the situation is hopeless.)

So... I don't think Thor would be angry. I think he's too shocked and shaken to express anger, or to really blame anyone but himself. But I think Thor might still have a hard time accepting that this is the truth, as in... believing, understanding, and coming to terms with it.

Like... Thor has definitely not unlearnt all his prejudice against Jotuns in a handful of days on a completely different subject realm. He's probably not far off from where he started at all - sure, he's seen a few Jotuns face-to-face, so they're probably realer to him now, and he wouldn't accept Loki's plan for total annihilation... But in his mind, they're still enemies, still a grotesque, frightening Other, almost certainly still monsters.

So hearing that Loki is and always has been a Jotun will be really, really hard for Thor. He's going to be in utter turmoil over this, and there isn't any comfortable answer to settle on.

So... maybe Loki's not really Jotun. Okay, he can't see any reason why his parents would lie again, but maybe it's only true on a technical level, maybe Loki's really more like "one of us" than "one of them", on the inside. (But what actually makes a Jotun a monster? Is it behaviour? Culture? Biology? Is it some inherent property of their souls?)

Or maybe Jotuns aren't monsters, not all of them, not inherently. But everyone on Asgard has always acted like they are. If this is true, Thor has blood on his hands, and so do his parents, and his friends, and their entire society, the society Thor is responsible for and beholden to.

Or maybe Loki is a monster. (Was a monster.) He always seemed like a person, and Thor loved him, but apparently Thor barely knew Loki at all. In the end, Loki violently rejected Thor's love and did monstrous things, and it seems like he was lying very well for a very long time before that. Maybe Thor has been played for a fool, and he never had a brother at all.

Or maybe Loki was a monster, but he didn't want to be one. Maybe it wasn't entirely his choice; he was delicate, and their parents were trying to protect him, but Thor was careless and he broke him (by revealing his heritage; by leaving him alone in a crisis; by whatever long-standing failure he still doesn't understand that made Loki hate him so much and so personally in the end.)

Out of these, I think Thor ultimately settles on a mixture of #1 and #4. But there's so much going on here (grief for Loki; anger at him; fear of him; guilt in completely contradictory directions) and no way to really work through it or understand what's true that I think it takes a very long time. And there's probably a great deal of rain in Asgard in the meantime.

Anyway. This is... a very long reply that manages to avoid ever really being an answer. But here are some musings on Thor's state of mind in the wake of this revelation.
