savior: THOR “PARTY PRINCE” ODINSON
Tumblr media
-
NAME: Thor Odinson AGE: 1,500 SPECIES: Demigod
BACKGROUND: Sole Prince of Asgard and will one day inherit the title of King. During the Asgard-Jotunheim War, Odin would come upon Leufey’s son and leave him behind. Leufey came back just in time to save Loki from a frozen death, and raise him as intended. Because of this, Thor never had a brother.
Instead of being taught lessons of modesty and responsibility, Thor was left to his own devices and absolutely went off the handle on multiple occasions. Without someone to complete with and keep Thor humble, he found a fondness for goofing off and partying. The worry of not being good enough for the throne never manifested since there was no one to upstage, making way for the Prince of Parties. Some believe him to be under the spell of Dionysus, the party god.
This IS, in fact, the truth. Any hope he could have had from learning his place in the universe without Loki was snuffed out when he went in search of other gods instead. When he lost his worthiness, Thor turned his back on Earth and instead went looking for help from other Gods. The God he found was Dionysus, who was able to charm Mjolnir into believing Thor was worthy, and thus acted as such again. Dionysus also bestowed the gift of “party god” unto Thor, in return for allowing him to use his abilities again. This causes him to be obsessed with earth vices, as well as never being able to resist a good party. He would never become the Thor of 616, but he didn’t exactly need to--not with being a Savior of the Multiverse.
Thor likes inhaling mead, indulging in herbals, party games, and long walks on the Earth beach. Pretty ladies and gentleman alike serve as one of his only weaknesses, as well as a good Boston cream pie. He is the absolute definition of what earthlings would call a “himbo”.

Loki And Tony (Frontiron) 2 Masterlist
part one
A Broken Mating Song (ao3) - MysticMedusa Rating: Teen And Up
Summary: After the events of the civil war Tony’s feeling the pain of losing so many of his friends. He knows he’s broken and unworthy of his soulmate. All his life this truth made him never sing the song that would call out to his soulmate. Nearing his heat and at the end of his rope he sings the broken melody knowing his soulmate will refuse him as he’s beyond repair.
a little green snake (in the grass) (ao3) - SailorChibi Rating: Teen And Up
Summary: How would AOU have changed if Loki and Tony had been secretly dating? For one thing, Loki would never have stood by while Thor choked Tony.
All They Said We Wanted (They’re All Liars) (ao3) - Runic Rating: Mature
Summary: Tony knew what it meant when he was the only one who could smell Loki’s heat, he knew it signified that they were soul mates. That didn’t keep Tony from being in complete and utter denial about the whole situation.
Ashore (ao3) - Arkada Rating: Explicit
Summary: After the terrible things he’s done, Loki Odinson knows he’s a monster; so does the entire Shielddome, who hate him almost as much as he hates himself. Now he’s only on base because his brother insists, never mind that Loki would give almost anything to get out of here.
Building Jaegers is Tony Stark's wet dream come to life. He can drink, screw around, and avoid sleeping as much as he wants, so long as he keeps the Jaeger fleet running, and he never has to explain why he's borderline destroying himself.
When they meet, it's lust at first sight - for Tony. For Loki, it's hope and safety and friendship and everything else he can't let himself have.
Beloved of the Sea. (ao3) - Michaelssw0rd Rating: Teen And Up
Summary:
“Does the Odin King live?” “Yes.” A cry of rage echoes through the sea, a storm brews from deep within it, because the water asks a question to allow safe passage, and this isn’t the right answer.
(Or the story of a prince who is bound to the sea, and a mortal who falls in love with it.)
Boreal Involvement (ao3) - Batwynn Rating: Explicit
Summary: Tony Stark was about to die cold, alone, and on the wrong side of the portal. A certain god stepped in to save him, only somehow they end up stuck together on an all too familiar frozen planet. Loki's magic can send them back to Earth, but what lurks in the darkness... and follows them home?
Cold Curses (ao3) - Like_a_Hurricane Rating: Not Rated
Summary: A Beauty and the Beast AU (I know, I know, but hear me out)
Set in a world only vaguely akin to Earth-616 in the 1600s. Steampunk with no steam, dialed back 200 years, with technology advanced by practical magic and the Marvel "Age of Heroes" from Marvel 1602. Historical accuracy: do not expect much of it.
Advanced human magecraft was a dying art when Anthony's father was born, but magic itself is far from dead and gone. The Stark family always had a bit of the gift, and Howard Stark used it in conjunction with scientific genius to bring strange and wondrous things into the world, and his son inherited that same legacy. Anthony's story is familiar to you: the attempted assassination, the kidnapping, the escape and the betrayal. Old Norse gods make their reappearance among men, and one of them has an army and possibly an overdeveloped sense of vengeance. The story carries on from there.
Deep in December (ao3) - SociallyIneptDork Rating: Teen And Up
Summary: When Thor, Loki and Bruce come back from Sakaar, they find Tony hurt in more ways than one. Loki has some time to reflect.
The Grandmaster had made him feel safe and secure in his own skin.
And as he watches Tony leave the room with a murmured excuse about a new device that must be made, Loki wishes he could spread that bit of knowledge to the young scientist.
Hold Me in Your Heart (ao3) - STARSdidathing Rating: Teen And Up
Summary: No one knew about Loki and Tony. No one knew what had developed between them behind closed doors and off the battlefield. No one knew that capturing Loki, that sentencing him, was going to be as much a death for the man behind Iron Man, as the mage behind the bars.
In The Master’s House (ao3) - geekinlikeaboss Rating: Explicit
Summary: Loki is the petulant, willful son of the Lord of Asgardshire. Suppressed in his own desires to the point of mischief, he is often seen as a bully and a contentious ass by most. So it comes as some shock to him when a brash, confident stranger from the colonies decides to whip him into shape…literally!
I Quit (ao3) - iswyn, ShebaRen Rating: Teen And Up
Summary: Odin has spent years teaching Loki to be strong and self-sufficient, unlike stereotypical omega depictions in media. Still, when Loki decides to take his life in his own hands instead of following in his father’s footsteps to become a surgeon, Odin disapproves.
When Loki’s life plans land him halfway across the country taking care of a stranger’s baby, he can’t help but wonder if he’s in almost exactly the situation Odin was trying to warn him away from.
More Than Meets the Eye (ao3) - LokiNeedsHugs1031 Rating: Explicit
Summary: Tony Stark and Loki have known each other long before the attack on New York. Tony is shocked to find that Loki doesn't remember him at all, that hence the reason Tony being thrown out the window, that is until he's slammed to the ground by The Hulk. When Tony sneaks a peek at the beginning of interrogations he discovers that the Loki that attacked New York has seemingly woken up from some kind of mind control, and is begging for help.
Queens Grace (ao3) - RenneMichaels Rating: Mature
Summary: After the New York attack, Odin has taken Loki’s magic, made him mortal and imprisoned him. But Asgard is not a safe place for the Trickster under these conditions. Recent events make Odin decide to take away one more thing from his second son, his memory going back for the last four years. This decision and events that lead to it cause Frigga to decide that Asgard is not safe for Loki’s reduced station. From stories Thor had told, she decides that Tony Stark’s tower would make an excellent secure location for amnesiac Loki to be under house arrest.
Sail Away With Me (ao3) - STARSdidathing Rating: Mature
Summary: Loki was the feared and dreaded pirate captain of The Liesmith. His ship was infamous and his reputation well earned. It was why he was completely baffled to find a stowaway on his ship.
Of course, it didn’t mean he couldn’t take advantage of making the talented and handsome Anthony Stark a member of his crew.
Say Goodbye to Yesterday (ao3) - melonbutterfly Rating: Explicit
Summary: The day after the invasion Tony wakes up and his tower is intact again; everything is exactly the way it was before this whole mess went down. It doesn’t take him long to catch up but he can’t figure out why he’s in a time loop – so he does what anyone would: fuck things up while trying to find a way to fix this. Somewhere along the way, his priorities change and suddenly he finds himself involved neck-deep in Norse family drama, along with some other stuff.
The Accidental Art of Secret-Keeping (ao3) - NamelesslyNightlock Rating: Teen And Up
Summary: The best way of keeping a secret is to pretend there isn’t one. —Margaret Atwood
…or, five times Tony told the Avengers about Loki and the one time they finally caught on.
The Underwater Basket-Weaving Society of America (ao3) - thisiswhatthewatergaveme Rating: Explicit
Summary: Loki's crash landed, which is great. Only what do you do with a powerless, power-hungry ex-god looking for retaliation?
You Found Me (ao3) - hoodedmiho (missMHO) Rating: Mature
Summary: Tony Stark is a rich man of American origin who decides to repose in English province. He becomes enthralled by the person of Loki Odinson, young scientist who's disregarded by his family.
|| AU inspired by Jane Austen's novels ||

( avan jogia/anya chalotra. 1,000+. he/him/she/her/they/them. genderfluid. ) are you a HERO? something tells me that green tendrils of magic spilling over their fingers, emerald eyes glittering with the promise of mischief, and a broken, shattered heart hidden behind smart quips and an air of charm make you who you are, LOKI LAUFEYSON. with the powers of SORCERY, TELEKINESIS, SHAPESHIFTING, & JOTUN PHYSIOLOGY, you’re sure to have an adaptable , mischievous personality — and you definitely belong to UNAFFILIATED. were you listening to NOTHING STOPPING ME by VICETONE on your way to the subway? it suits you. we can’t wait to see what you do next!
Tumblr media
character name: loki laufeyson odinson age: 1,000+ faceclaim: avan jogia + anya chalotra voiceclaim: avan jogia + anya chalotra skill set:  asgardian/frost giant physiology and superhuman abilities, sorcery, shape shifting, telekinesis, genius intellect, allspeak, skilled combatant. affiliations: themself, mostly. asgard, and the young avengers family: laufey ( father, deceased ), farbauti ( mother, deceased ), odin ( adoptive father ), freya ( adoptive mother ), thor ( adoptive brother ), sigyn ( wife, now separated ), narfi ( son, deceased ), vali ( son ), fenrir ( son ), midgard serpent ( son ), hela ( daughter ) zodiac: Sagittarius  wiki link:  comic: https://marvel.fandom.com/wiki/Loki_Laufeyson_(Ikol)_(Earth-616). mcu: https://marvelcinematicuniverse.fandom.com/wiki/loki
was your character “blipped” out? if so, what did they return to and how is it affecting them? if not, who important to them was blipped out, and what has it felt like after those five years have passed?
well, funny thing. loki was... neither. considering they were killed by thanos before the snap occurred so he never had to deal with any of that. but, of course, loki always knows how to escape death and had their name removed from the book of hel to be reborn as a new loki. hence, this version. let’s just say there’s a lot being dealt with on that end.
where are they living? are they living with anyone?
an apartment that was conjured by magic. midgard is surprisingly not terrible and loki is enjoying her time in the realm for now. living alone for the time being.
why is your character affiliated with who they’re affiliated with?
even with a lot of the changes loki has made in his life, it’s still not the easiest thing to just openly trust people. precisely why the first person he’s loyal to is, well, himself. but asgard is still their home, and the young avengers are family at the end of the day.
who are their major friends, allies, and foes?
friends: the young avengers.... generally. thor.
allies: the young avengers and asgard
foes: a.... lot of people. look, loki is good at making enemies.
whose hands do they believe the country should be in?
midgard?? loki couldn’t really care less.
what’s their current mental state at? their physical state?
not the best. loki is still reeling from the guilt of killing kid loki and taking his body, so that has been... fun. very fun. they’re also still grappling with the guilt and weight of everything the other loki did, and what the future may hold. as for his physical state, it’s fine. he is a god, after all.

━━ ◤ ( STORIES TOLD AROUND A FIRE, LAUGHTER FULL OF MISCHIEF AND MIRTH, BLACK-PAINTED NAILS, & BRIGHT SICKLY GREEN ) welcome, LOKI LAUFEYSON, HE/THEY/SHE. before you move in, tell us what you remember: BREAKING OUT OF THE RAFT. excellent, now we are pleased to accept your offer to live at STARLING HEIGHTS APARTMENTS, and your new job as AN ENGLISH TEACHER at EDLUND HIGH SCHOOL is waiting for you to begin. ( marvel comics, avan jogia & anya chalotra )
Tumblr media
THE BASICS
NAME: loki laufeyson/odinson. just loki.
NICKNAMES: ikol n/a
BIRTHDAY: unknown december 17, 1995
AGE: possibly over three thousand twenty-five
PRONOUNS: he/him, they/them, she/her
LAST KNOWN MEMORY: breaking out of the raft
ORIGINATION: marvel comics / earth-616, with some influence from the mcu & norse mythology
FACECLAIM: avan jogia & anya chalotra
THE DETAILS
FAMILY: laufey (birth father), farbauti (birth mother), odin (adoptive father), frigga/freyja (adoptive mother), thor, balder, tyr (adoptive brothers), angela, laussa (adoptive sisters)
THREE FAVORITE THINGS: energy drinks and/or coffee overloaded with sugar, creating a happy ending, & sharing their favorite stories with friends
EDUCATION: bachelor’s degree in education & creative writing
SKILLS: sorcery, allspeak, shapeshifting, combat prowess, charisma & manipulation
HEADCANONS:  - they stress bake - they prefer to use no patronym at all, but will use laufeyson if pressed. odinson is used exclusively to refer to them in relation with their siblings. - they teach an advanced/honors english class at the high school, and they also run a creative writing club - they may or may not write fan fiction (this one’s actually just canon)
WHAT THEY’RE PLANNING TO DO IN DECIMATION: loki holds their waking dreams with a grain of salt; the idea of them being a god - specifically the god of evil and lies mischief, stories, and outcasts - and a king is too outlandish for them.  but they do know a good idea when it comes to them, and are using these dreams as the rough basis for an original work they’re writing. they’ve mostly settled in decimation as it seems like a quiet enough town to not distract them too much as they work on their book.  though, they are likely to get into trouble more often than not, and usually drag a “friend” or two along with them.

SAVE TIME
A/N: I am in a writing rut tbh, oh and Earth - 616 is the main marvel/avengers universe just thought i’d let you guys know :3 also inserting some fun facts in the end :) +this is short af so yee
Tumblr media
Just before Evie stepped into one of the portals she took one last glance towards Mobius and Loki, she smiled to herself thinking that it was going to be an interesting sight to see.
Evie arrived at Earth - 616 she is better known here as the successor of the Wishing Man her father; from the triumph division, someone who has reality bending powers. She wears a dark cloak just like the Wishing Man but her real name here is Estrella, their leader the Red Feather is friends with Tony Stark and in this timeline the universe has been restored, and the Flag Smashers bunch are just starting to cause chaos.
Evie/Estrella’s back story here is that she was not supposed to succeed her father, it was supposed to be her older brother to succeed him, but because of the blip he was gone for 5 years and during that time the Wishing Man their father decided that it would be best to appoint her as the next Wishing Man. The children of the Triumph Division, the next generation of the Triumph Division, she is now known as Wish.
“Wish, how are you?” Red Feather says as he walks in into Triumph Hall where Wish sat in one of the chairs, “Just peachy.” Wish replies, “I understand your confusion whether you should give your brother the mantle to become the Wishing Man.” Red Feather sits down in front of her, “You were both trained the same way, you are equally worthy of succeeding the Wishing Man.” he says, “I know, but I feel that my brother might feel that he was wronged. Robbed of the mantle that he was supposed to stand on.” Wish buries her face into her hands, “Your brother disappeared during the blip, none of us would’ve known that he would come back.” Red Feather says, “I know...” she replied, “Now make haste, there is much to do, Thor Odinson of Asgard is coming.” he says to her, “But isn’t the Odinson in space?” Wish asks, “He has business with us. Something he would like to discuss.” was the last thing he said to her before walking away.
The Triumph Division now stood outside of the Triumph Hall awaiting the arrival of their honorable guest Thor Odinson. Evie stood beside the other members with regal purpose, Evie was Wish in Earth - 616 though through the years she has been Wish she has only ever met Iron Man and Thor in this reality, and now she was going to meet Thor again for something, Red Feather often left out some details he deems unnecessary for the others to know. The wind suddenly picked up as a ship started to land in front of them, Evie’s role in this universe is still uncertain and only the Gods know where she is destined to be.
“Thor!” Red Feather greeted their esteemed guest, “Red Feather!” Thor’s voice boomed with an echoing shake, ‘Would he still be grieving for Loki? Does he know that his brother is alive?’ was the thought that ran through Evie’s mind as Thor greeted the others. Wish stood at the end of the line they had, cloak and all. “Wish! How are you?” he greets her with open arms, “I’ve been well Thor Odinson.” she nodded towards his direction, “You look taller than the last time I saw you, no doubt you have bloomed into a beautiful lady under your cloak.” he compliments her, “Thank you for your kind words Thor.” she bows down slightly, Thor then turns his attention to Red Feather and then they made their way into the Triumph Hall.
The discussion whizzed by so fast in Evie’s point of view, they discussed about what comes next now that the blip was reversed and about the Flag Smashers, Thor of course still wished his brother Loki was alive, Evie wanted to comfort him by telling him that his brother is alive, but she couldn’t do it, in fear of the consequences that might come from that information. So she kept her mouth shut, after the meeting Thor stayed for a few days with them as to the reason why? Red Feather insisted on talking about matters that Wish was not authorized to know. Evie thought she should go back, back to her reality so she did; in this reality Wish doesn’t disappear she is still Wish acting to her own accord, the realities are a complicated bunch, that even Evie hasn’t quite grasped yet.
Coming back to her reality she wakes up in her bed, she looks at the clock and she has been gone for almost a day, luckily she lived alone. She sighed... another day in my mundane reality. She has been to multiple amazing realities and dimension that her real reality seemed boring and too ordinary, if it weren’t for her job and being a Shifter she would’ve loved to stay in Earth - 616 but she can’t she’s still tethered to her original reality.
funny little fact: the Wishing Man’s reality bending power works how wishes work, he basically says: “I wish -insert wish here-.”

the mirrors surrounding you did as they were meant to, reflecting back a spitting image of AVAN JOGIA  -  but it’s clear something is wrong from the moment that a vision of BECOMING THE GOD OF OUTCASTS AND BREAKING OUT OF THE RAFT strikes you.  perhaps it was a passing daydream in the frenzy of the funhouse. you reassure yourself  -  you’re LOKI,  an UNKNOWN (PHYSICALLY TWENTY-SIX) YEAR OLD WRITER whose virtue lies in your + INTELLIGENCE & + CHARISMA, although you’ve been told that you tend to be quite - MISCHIEVOUS & - MANIPULATIVE,  and you’re associated with FIGHTING FOR YOUR HAPPY ENDING, THE MAGIC IN STORIES, & BLACK-PAINTED NAILS by those around you.  suddenly,  however,  you’ve found YOUR SCEPTER on your person - was that always there? from the moment you leave the funhouse,  memories from your life in MARVEL COMICS have begun to return - leaving whoever you had been before in the mirror’s reflection behind you.  you can almost hear I WANNA GET BETTER by THE BLEACHERS following in your wake. ( he/they/she & genderfluid )
let’s tell a different story. let’s be something new.
BASICS
name: loki laufeyson/odinson age: possibly over three thousand, possibly five, also possibly both twenty-six birthday: unknown december 17th gender: genderfluid pronouns: any (he/they/she) * sexuality: arospec & bi/pan occupation: god of mischief, stories, and outcasts & the king of jotunheim writer * please please please, default to they/them when talking about loki generally or if pronouns haven’t been established in the thread yet, please don’t just auto use he/him. more masculine terms (brother, son, etc.) are fine to use as a default, though. thank you !!
CANON BACKGROUND
listen loki’s got a really long history that i don’t feel like fully getting into right now, so i’m gonna bullet point the major things to know. also i write a strictly comics/earth-616 based loki, not an mcu based loki.
trigger warnings for trauma, abuse, death, murder, suicide, and cannibalism.
son of laufey, king of jotunheim, but adopted by odin and freyja (aka frigga), the king and queen of asgard
fully aware that they are adopted and are actually a frost giant, they specifically also remember that laufey is physically abusive
adoptive brother of thor (among several other siblings)
starts off as the god of mishchief and lies, but eventually becomes known as the god of evil and lies
they want power ! and asgard’s throne ! and will stop at nothing to get them !
some shit happens
they end up dying
and coming back
stops being the god of evil and goes back to mischief
ends up being killed by themself and kinda steals their own body?
yeah it’s weird just.... loki killed loki and stole loki’s body, there was a ghost/copy/echo involved just go with it okay
(okay but if you wanna know just ask it’s just A Lot)
no one knows about that murder though, not at first
the truth inevitably comes out, and they’re basically disowned by thor and freyja, and exiled from asgard
(”where’s odin?” you ask. he’s the universe’s worst dad and i don’t wanna talk about him, okay)
they become the god of stories because ..... they were the god of lies, and stories are just lies that people want to hear, that people want to like and love
some shit happens
war of the realms happens, and laufey may or may not try eating loki
(spoilers: he does)
(spoilers: it doesn’t go well for laufey, as loki’s got a sword with them in laufey’s stomach)
loki becomes the king of jotunheim
which, they don’t want that ! haven’t wanted to be a king at all in years !
but thor, who’s the allfather and king of asgard now, won’t let loki abdicate
so loki decides to uhhhhhhhhh join the avengers ?
but they wind up in the raft, yknow the maximum security prison for supervillains, instead. so that’s fun.
they break out though bc they can and that’s just how they are
and declare themself the god of outcasts at the same time
questions? yeah, just come ask and i’ll tell you more and/or explain better
ALUCARD BACKGROUND
they landed in the foster system at the young age of seven, after the unfortunate death of their mother and their father being unable to be found. they didn’t last long with most families due to not fitting in or being accepted, and for having a penchant for running away. but they eventually do land with a family that accepts and supports them, and this time they didn’t run away. they attended college for only one semester before dropping out to focus more fully on their true passion, writing.
WANTED CONNECTIONS
adoptive siblings/parents/etc friends they’re not exactly usually the easiest person to get along with, so they’d almost definitely have some enemies exes (i’d especially love one that was more serious, like an ex-spouse or fiance/e) potentially a current romantic relationship?? or something heading in that direction???? since they’re a writer maybe ?? a fan of their works or smth??

Why (most of) the 2010s Marvel legacy characters didn’t work
Tumblr media
For Marvel characters I think it comes off as profoundly undermining when they get legacies, at least in the specific way Marvel attempted this throughout the 2010s.
To explain this we need to actually first look at DC’s characters in order to compare and contrast why legacies for them tend to work out better than they do for Marvel.
Simply put back in the 1930s-1950s (if not even later) DC’s characters were almost always created as powers first, people second. Wish fulfilment fantasy figures over flawed mere mortals.
Consequently you could legacy Green Lantern and the Flash in the 1950s and then do so again in the 1980s-1990s because so so long as you had a guy with a ring and another guy with super speed you were retaining the essence of both characters, the fundamental point and appeal of them.
But the Marvel characters were the other way around and practically deliberately designed to be so.
Thor was the story of the life and times of Thor Odinson. Spider-Man was the story of the life and times of Peter Parker. The Fantastic Four was never the story about a brainiac who stretched, a girl who could go invisible, a kid who could burst into flame and a guy who looked like a rock monster.
It was about a stern scientist obsessed with his work. A nurturing young woman who loved him but was frustrated by his tendency to get lost in his work. Her younger brother interested in sports cars, girls, excitement and other typically hot headed teenage endeavours. And an average Joe who was tortured and depressed that he was no longer human.
Ben Grimm could’ve looked like any kind of monster and the central point of his character would have been retained. The F4′s specific powers, complemented their personalities, but they were not the driving point unto themselves.
In contrast let us consider Captain America, probably the Marvel character who’s done the ‘replacement legacy hero’ storyline the most (at least within 616 canon). How comes he  lends himself so much better to this type of story than the other Marvel characters?
Simple, because unlike most of the big name Marvel characters you know of, he wasn’t created in the 1960s or beyond. Cap was the product of the 1940s and was a peer to those same early days super heroes from the Golden Age, including the original Green Lantern and Flash. Like them he began fundamentally more as a symbol and powerset than a person.
But now flashing forward to the 21st century many (most in my view) Flash fans were upset (and continue to be so) Wally West’s ascension to the Flash mantle was undermined and ultimately undone for the sake of restoring Barry Allan to the spotlight. The reason for this upset when Wally himself had replaced Barry? Wally had proven himself a far more flawed, nuanced and complex character than Barry had ever been.
He demonstrated a degree of characterisation in the Flash role that Barry never had. It wasn’t even that he simply had more of this than Barry, but that Barry, just like Jay Garrick preceding him, had little to speak of in the first place. Thus the contrast between Jay and Barry was mostly superficial but the contrast between Barry and Wally was as stark as comparing Spider-Man to 1950s Superman.*
But Wally West, and the entire DC Universe from Post-Crisis onwards in fact, were in that mould precisely because they were trying to be more like Marvel comics has been since the 1960s onwards.
DC in effect began prioritising the people beneath the costumes over the powers.** But Marvel starting in the 1960s had pretty much always been like that with their heroes.
Consequently when legacies popped up and those new characters were pushed as being just as good, just as worthy, or (in some cases) lowkey pushed as being better  than their predecessors it naturally rubbed those fans with decades of emotional investment the wrong way. OBVIOUSLY  a woman or a POC can be just as worthy and just as capable as a man or a white person as a superhero. But series to series, character to character, it was almost like Marvel was taking away your beloved pet.
Imagine for a moment you had a pet named Rex that you’d known and loved for years.
Then Marvel insisted on taking Rex away from you when there was nothing wrong with him. In his place they give you another clearly different pet with Rex’s collar, who gets Rex’s bowl, Rex’s food, Rex’s toys, Rex’s bed and even Rex’s name and asks you to treat them not as just a new dog but straight up the new Rex.
Except he isn’t Rex. Rex is Rex. The ‘new Rex’ playing with Rex’s toys, doing the same tricks as him or having his collar doesn’t change that.***
Because Rex was more than a collar, his toys or his tricks. He was an individual that you’d known and loved. And even if you know Rex is going to come back ‘eventually’ having Rex taken away from you at all, having the new Rex supplant them (especially if old Rex was screwed over for the sake of new Rex’s arrival) and having so many people insist new Rex is just as great or more great than old Rex (to the point where many people loudly proclaim they don’t even want the old Rex back and the old Rex was kinda lame and boring) is going to create a massive dissonance. Maybe you would’ve been chill with the new Rex is he was just another additional pet called Rover or even like RexY who was similar yet different to Rex, but not actually promoted AS Rex or as his replacement.
Maybe you would’ve been okay with the new Rex if the old one got too old, died naturally or accidentally. But you aren’t okay with it because there was nothing wrong with Rex, you LOVED Rex and Rex had been with you and been around generally forever. So the new Rex felt like he was undermining him, especially undermining Rex’s individuality.
That’s how I think most Marvel fans felt about practically EVERY legacy situation that’s ever cropped up from the 1960s onwards, not even the ones just from the 2010s. I remember  the outrage when Bucky was announced as the new Cap. I know there were people salty about Eric Masterson as Thor and the Spider-Man Clone Saga speaks for itself.
Compounding the situation is that more than a few media outlets (despite imo not representing the feeling’s of the majority at all) promoted (and in some cases still promote) the new characters as not just better than they are (see the dozen or so lists talking about how great Riri allegedly was) but along with many fans tear down the older characters whilst doing so.
See every article ever talking about why Peter Parker in the movies (and sometimes in the comics) NEEDS to die for the sake of Miles becoming the new Spider-Man in spite of their rationales rarely making sense from a creative/financial POV and utilizing misrepresentations of both characters to varying degrees. Even fans that appreciate the social/political relevancy of the new characters are going to naturally be upset in response to that and angrily voice opposition when the character they love gets dragged through the mud like that. And that then gets exacerbated when they are labelled as bigots for feeling upset by the changes or reacting against the character they love being dragged through the mud.****
Especially considering they would’ve reacted the same way regardless of who was the replacement hero.  Again, fans at first didn’t take kindly to John Walker or Bucky as the new Captain Americas so the idea that backlash against Sam Wilson was entirely or primarily racist was itself profoundly ignorant. Especially when you consider black reviewers such as those on the Hooded Utalitarian were calling it out as bad storytelling and bad representation for black people. SpaceTwinks went issue by issue through Spencer’s Sam Wilson run and called it out as racist, ignorant and naive. NONE of which is me saying that there isn’t more than a little bigotry going around detractors of these new characters nor that there aren’t obviously bad actors.
But those people did not and do not represent the majority and framing the situation as though they do is disingenuous and highly unethical. In conclusion, the backlash against the 2010s Marvel legacy characters was entirely natural, understandable and for the vast majority came from a place of love for the original characters not a bigoted hatred for the new characters skin colour or sex.
It was a testament to Marvel’s, and the wider media, misunderstanding the psychology of most comic book fans.
P.S. In regards to that, though it isn’t exactly talking about what I’ve spoken about I’d highly recommend checking out this video which touches upon the disenchantment Star Wars fans felt over the Sequel Trilogy, which itself could be viewed as doing the same thing Marvel did with it’s replacement legacy characters.
P.P.S. The reason I think the likes of Miles Morales or Kamala Khan succeeded where others failed is chiefly due to their rise to the role of legacy replacements stemmed from their predecessors not  being sidelined for their rise to the spotlight. Miles never ever replaced the 616 version of Peter Parker, widely considered by most fans and Marvel internally as the true and legitimate version of the character. Kamala Khan meanwhile picked up the Ms. Marvel only when Carol Danvers discarded it and became Captain Marvel. She was still in the spotlight in her own right, Kamala simply got her own spotlight using Carol’s obsolete name. Which isn’t all that dissimilar to fan favourite Cassandra Cain’s rise to the Batgirl mantle now I think about it.
P.P.P.S. A possible counter argument to all I’ve said is the success of the Superior Spider-Man/Otto Octavius. After all why was he embraced when Sam Wilson and Jane Foster wasn’t? Was a double standard rooted in bigotry at play?
No, but the answer isn’t neat and simple.
I think Ock as the new Spider-Man was more embraced partially because Ock had been around essentially as long as Spidey himself. But more poignantly  pre-Superior Spider-Man was so atrocious that a sizzling and sexy idea like Superior (which generated tons of cheap novelty) felt utterly refreshing, even to people who had actually LIKED pre-Superior Spidey under Slott. It’s like how people praised the early Big Time stories despite their problems because compared to BND they were genuinely better.
Plus Superior, for all it’s god forsaken writing, didn’t exist to clearly workshop potential movie ideas or chiefly in aid of a social/political cause. Someone can agree that there should be more black or female superheroes but disagree that the older characters should be sidelined in the attempt to achieve that.
Especially when there were better alternative options such as introducing those newer characters within and alongside the established hero’s narrative or simply introduce them independently as has happened recently with the likes of Lunar Snow.
*This is also why I suspect Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman survived from the Golden Age into the Silver Age. Because they were the DC characters who (more than any of the other ones) had actual personalities/substance to them. **Of course this didn’t begin wholesale with the post-Crisis era. But noticeably the characters who had worked with this new shift in priorities prior to Crisis on Infinite Earths stayed generally the same thereafter (E.g. the Titans, Batman) whilst characters who had largely vacillated or struggled (e.g. Superman and Wonder Woman) were given fresh starts which proved critically and financially successful.
***Not even if he does everything just as well as Rex did or does some stuff differently that’s still good (although the overwhelming majority of the time new Rex is clearly not as good as the old Rex).
****I’ve seen people be called racist and misogynists for calling out Riri Williams honestly ridiculous degree of competency as a hero/tech genius in spite of her age. This is not an invalid criticism, yet disliking the character because of those reasons is grounds to be labelled as something ugly by another (imo minor yet also vocal) contingent of fandom.
Hell I was called a Trump supporting Breitbart reading bigot for calling out Marvel as two-faced due to never putting a black writer in charge of Sam Wilson as Captain America or a woman in charge of Jane Foster as Thor. It isn’t exclusive to comics either as I and other people have been accused of racism/misogyny for disliking the Last Jedi in spite of that film to my eyes being itself racist and sexist anyway.

Tumblr media
before i was a liar, i was something else.  cast out.  out of kingdoms.  families.  universes.  again.  and again.  and again.
Tumblr media
trigger warnings for death, murder, suicide, abuse, trauma, & cannibalism.
(  nat wolff, diana silvers.  unknown, physically twenty-three.  he/him, they/them, she/her.  )   everything’s fine,  LOKI LAUFEYSON,  you’re in the good place!  do you remember your last days in  MARVEL COMICS? but don’t worry, your  ( stories told around a fire, the green glow of magic, & black nailpolish )  will fit perfectly with the rest of the good place, so long as you commit to the  GOOD KING  despite your tendency to commit to  ( insecurities )  that the architect of the good place said you were. it’ll just be like a fun acting exercise! just play along and everything will continue to be fun.
so.... i’m going to assume we all know who loki is, yeah?  the norse god of mischief, (adoptive) brother of thor, prince of asgard, etc.  that’s all true to this loki, but if you’re only familiar with the mcu, there will be differences as i write a strictly comics/earth-616 based loki !
spoilers for most comics loki’s appeared in since 2010ish, but mostly loki: agent of asgard, thor (2018), war of the realms, and loki (2019).
stats can be found here.
BIO
i’m going try and speed through the first portion of this bio seeing as like.... loki’s technically died multiple times and been reincarnated (....basically), and i write the current, third incarnation of them.  so i’m only going to briefly mention the important stuff from the previous incarnations.  and if any of this is confusing, 1) i’m sorry, and 2) i know.
original loki.
son of laufey, the king of jotunheim.  laufey was (physically) abusive to loki.  loki wound up getting taken / being adopted by odin and freyja.  loki is fully aware of being adopted, and that he’s not an asgardian and is in fact a frost giant.
he, at some point, went back in time and brutally murdered laufey for being abusive (and also messed with things and basically manipulated the events that led to him being adopted).
he did some really messed up stuff, wound up being known as the god of evil rather than the god of mischief.  hated being defined by that, ends up trying to change but kinda sorta died.
kid loki.
loki wound up being reincarnated, as a child.
he’s... the loki that could have and should have been?  he’s.... great.  if loki were a true hero.  he used his tricks for good, tried to help people.
but literally no one trusts him because he’s the reincarnation of, yknow, the god of evil.
he’s being haunted by an echo/ghost of the original loki, a magpie known as ikol.
long story made short, ikol basically manipulates kid loki into dying.
ikol kills kid loki and steals his body.
and here we are, at the third loki - the specific one i write.  they’ve just committed the “crime that will not be forgiven”.  absolutely no one but loki themself knows about this.
they join the young avengers, trying to steal billy kaplan’s powers.  but things don’t go at all as planned, and they leave the team behind after somewhat helping fix the mess they had created.
they wind up working for the allmother (freyja, idunn, and gaea) in an attempt to redeem themself, to make up for everything they’ve done wrong in the past.
it goes... poorly, given that king loki - a loki from the future - shows up and promises the allmother that asgard will be everything they want, all for the low price of loki being the eternal villain.
loki, understandably, is less than pleased about this, and eventually through a whole lotta shit happening, the truth about kid loki comes out.
queue the trauma conga line! 1) thor tries to kill loki, can’t bring himself to do it.  still breaks loki’s arm and knocks out a tooth. 2) the asgardians declare loki to be worth no more than the dirt under their feet. 3) freyja banishes loki and sends them into exile. 4) odin gives them some very dubious life advice, and then sets them on fire.
king loki explains to loki exactly why loki will always be the villain, why they will never be accepted or loved or wanted.
it’s because they’re the god of lies, and no matter how much good they do, how can anyone trust someone with that for a title?
they get sent to “the metaphorical space.  the place we lokis always go for the final act.” and have a lovely conversation with the original loki and kid loki who basically....
og loki tells ikol that they have to accept that all they will ever be is the villain, while kid loki offers ikol the option of dying, of killing themself.  and that’s it.  loki’s lot in life is to either be a villain or to die.
but, because they have an amazing best friend (verity willis) who talks them off either ledge, they choose the third option: a happy ending, redefining who they are because they don’t have to be what anyone else tells them they have to be.
because stories?  stories are lies that people want to hear, lies that people love.  and loki winds up becoming the god of stories, instead of staying the god of lies.
it makes more sense in context.
but it’s not about loki wanting to be accepted by others, not really.  when odin says that loki is finally thor’s equal and that loki’s worthy, loki basically tells him to fuck off.
because see... loki’s arc is about them accepting themself and learning to love themself, and less about them actually being accepted by others.
but because this is loki nothing’s ever good and happy for long.
laufey’s back from the dead, and loki’s tasked with working with him to be a double agent for asgard (even though technically loki’s still in exile ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ )
shit keeps happening.
more shit happens.
then war of the realms !
during this time..... laufey finds out that loki’s a double agent and.... he eats loki.
yes, you read that and my trigger warning for cannibalism correctly.  i wish i was joking or lying about this, but i’m not.
loki has a sword and cuts their way out of laufey’s stomach, killing laufey in the proccess.  and in doing so becomes the king of jotunheim.
they do not want that throne.  they don’t want any throne, really.  they would gladly abdicate, but thor, who’s the allfather by this point, won’t let them.
none of the frost giants want loki as king, either but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
a bit more shit happens.
they wind up locked in the raft, a maximum security prison built to contain super-powered criminals.  however, loki can still use magic in their cell because they’re apparently not really a villain, and therefore the raft’s rules of neutralizing super villains powers can’t hold any sway over them.
loki winds up breaking out of the cell because they can and that’s what they do.
and here’s where i break from canon and into the rp.
there’s fighting over the throne for jotunheim, and loki eventually wound up getting killed as a result.
the fake life presented to them is something along the lines of if loki hadn’t ever died before and was like kid loki (ie, good but through less than good means) the whole while.
EXTRAS
loki prefers being referred to as laufeyson/laufeysdottir over odinson/odinsdottir but will reply to either.  they ultimately prefer no patronym be used at all, though.
their memories are... jumbled.  they don’t remember everything from past lives, and they have memories of events that have never actually happened.
here in The Good Place™ loki 1000000% feels like they don’t belong.
partially because of how many times they’ve died and come back to life, like.  they reckon they aren’t going to stick around very long.
partially because this seems too much like an alternate reality version of valhalla, and they know that’s not where they’d end up.
and partially because like... they’re a norse god.  this isn’t one of their afterlifes.  this is something else, and loki doesn’t know what to make of it.
they’re a resident of colohuara.
read their wiki pages they’re more cohesive than this is lmao.  og loki + kid loki + ikol
i’m so sorry about how long this got.  if you read through all of it, i love you and owe you my life.
if anyone would like to plot, just throw me a dm !!!

on twitter some dude was like 616/Norse Mythology for Thor Comics is so buckwild and convoluted that everybody is everybody’s everybody and it was proven in the Hela/Balder wedding lol.
Hela is Loki’s Daughter. Loki is Thor and Baldr’s brother. Loki’s KINDA Tyr’s brother but is actually not really. Tyr is an Odinson so is technically Brother to Thor and Baldr. But Hela ALSO was childhood sweethearts Kid Loki when they were Kid Loki and Leah. So Baldr is marrying his niece? But not his niece? And Thor is riding around on the back of his nephew, uh...Wolf, Loki’s son.
Keeping up with the Odinsons is so fucking buckwild I love it

Is that [ EZRA MILLER/ZOEY DEUTCH ]? Nope! That’s just [ LOKI ODINSON ], a [ CANON CHARACTER ] from [ MARVEL ], shaking the sand out of their shoes. The [ 1000+ ] year old must have forgotten to wear their flip flops to the beach again. Oh well! I hear they have [ SOME ] of their memories and that while they can be [ MISCHIEVOUS ], they can also be [ INTELLIGENT ].
loki was known to many as the go of mischief who caused numerous things and hurt a lot of people that stood against him. he was seen as a villain despite just wanting to be seen and accepted
i keep the first thor and dark world canon. except, in dark world, loki actually did die rather than just fake his death. this is where the 616 elements come into play
while loki did die, a deal was made to wipe his name from the of hel to be reborn with a clean slate.
this new version was haunted by the evil version of himself, and he was able to turn that version of himself into a crow named ikol
unfortunately ikol convinced the young loki to sacrifice himself, and ikol killed him, and took the younger loki’s body. this, however, caused ikol to feel great grief at what he had done and everything else done in the past
in the new body, loki chose to become a better person than the other version of himself.
he was a member of the young avengers, but he left them after certain events occurred, and in order to help thor during the events of ragnarok
the events are going to be kept canon, except loki was in the younger form and really only went to asgard when he heard thor was coming back there in order to help out. all he wanted to do was redeem himself. so the events of ragnarok are canon. loki is still working on the hero stuff, obviously
after asgard was destroyed, that was when thanos came upon their ship.
during those events, loki chose to fight for his brother and asgard, choosing to protect them at the cost of his own life once again.
given that loki’s name is still wiped from the book of hel, he didn’t die completely, and awoke here and is more than a little confused as to what occurred after dying at thanos’ hands.
they remember dying, but most other things are kind of iffy. a lot of history was forgotten and he doesn’t recall too many events that have happened. loki remembers thor very briefly. they’re trying to figure out what has happened and knows something is amiss but hasn’t realized memories have vanished
loki has a feminine form, as he is a shape shifter. pronouns depend on the day and what loki is feeling. it could be she, he, or they/them. just depends on what loki is feeling at the time
while loki is trying to be better than the other version of himself, there is still mischief there. under that is the yearning for people to finally accept that they’ve grown and become a better person rather than just a villain
as for abilities, loki has frost giant/asgardian physiology that grants superhuman abilities, and a regenerative healing factor
loki is also an incredibly skilled and powerful sorcerer, able to use magic in many forms.
at this moment in time, loki no longer goes by the god of mischief. it is instead the god/goddess of stories, and mistress of strategies.

My Stars For An Empire
Rated M. WIP. 48k+. Longfic.
Loki's attempt to murder Laufey has failed; Odin has awoken from the Allsleep; Thor despises his brother not-in-blood. Loki, with all this facing him, decides it is time to leave Asgard once and for all. Returning to Midgard, a realm he knew as he was yet a young man, he works to build something entirely new for himself.
This fic is written with an episodic style - after the initial set-up for the plot, there will be an 8-episode run of individual Loki & Doctor adventures, fashioned in the style of Doctor Who episodes or novels. Extra plot and character development will occur between "seasons". Loki and the Tenth Doctor will form a complex relationship, as will Loki and Tony Stark. This is a pretty huge AU, with influences from the MCU, the 616 and the Norse mythology behind Loki.
Main Characters: Loki Laufeyson, Tenth Doctor, Thor Odinson, Tony Stark, Pietro Maximoff, Nick Fury, Abigail Brand, Darcy Lewis, Rose Tyler

Avengers: Occult, Masters of the Mystic Arts
When external magic threats to the 616 universe start increasing in intensity, volume and frequency, DR STRANGE, unable to handle it on his own, realizes there must be more to these attacks than just random chance, and puts together an unlikely team of supernatural heroes, like no team before it, to defend their home universe from a magical threat unlike any faced before! Dr Stephen Strange probably the one who puts the team together. Sorcerer Supreme, Master of the mystic arts, need I say more? Nico Minoru reluctantly joins the team, since things with the superhero types have never gone well for her, but starts to really come into her own as a hero in this series as well as beginning to trust her footing as a leader, it turns out years of leading the runaways, to run away, and things she learned from her time with Alex Wilder, has left her a pretty solid tactician, and more than the Staff of One, that is Nico’s real strength. Though attempting to lead on his own at first, after a few nearly catastrophic failures during which only Nico’s quick thinking saves the day, even Stephen defers to her as field leader. Loki Odinson, God of Lies, Mischief, or Stories, even he’s not sure anymore. Because where would an avengers team be without a god of some kind batting for them? Also a reluctant addition to the team, is either there because there is absolutely no other choice, or because it serves his agenda in some way. Possibly both. Ghost Rider, I’m impartial on who, but I’m gonna go with Robbie Reyes, despite him being my least favourite Ghost Rider, to add some representation, cause this team is probably going to look a little white. The brawler, there for distractions and taking power players off the board with flaming chains and penance stares. Elsa Bloodstone, monster killer extraordinaire. There to offer practical solutions to supernatural problems, i.e, Spells won’t work against those pesky magic draining extradimensional bugs? Have you tried literally blowing the little shits up? Illyana Rasputin, Magik, Dr Strange’s estranged apprentice. She’s here because Strange asked her to be, and despite the fact she’s always pushed others away, Strange is one of the only few who’s ever actually gotten through to her. Really focus on the fact that, despite having some very excellent maternal figures in Limbo and afterwards, her paternal figures have all been rather dark and had very twisted relationships with Illyana, and Colossus, god bless him, is an amazing brother and loves her very much, but has never really understood Illyana, and that Strange, despite all his flaws and failings, and he has many, is the first positive father figure she’s ever had. Michael Twoyoungmen, Shaman, because I’m Canadian, and if you’re looking for positive native representation this is one of like four I can think of at marvel and he is vastly underused. Shaman has been around and he’s seen pretty much everything there is to see, and is just a very solid and very wise man. Like Dr. Strange with less ego, but also less ambition. he’s never cared to be more than what his, and he made his peace with that long ago. If he did though, he could give Dr. Strange a real run for his money. Billy Kaplan, Demiurge, as someone who becomes what is basically a god of magic in the future, as well as a future Sorcerer Supreme, something Strange knows but Billy does not, protecting the world from magical threats and overwhelming odds is sort of his wheelhouse. So what y’all think? would you read it?
