hey so how come lawyers like so much PAPER?
sincerely, the person in the copy center who has to print all these goddamn binders
Man, it is the worst. I grew up file clerking for my dad and it was so terrible that I decided I would never be a lawyer. SO much paperwork. Ugh. Horrible.
But also, if you're in trial, you want all of the information in the entire case at your fingertips, and you want to know exactly where every piece of info is--which means that you have it hard copy, because a laptop can glitch or lag or crash but paper abides.
Also, in a lot of circumstances, you need a physical item in order to admit something as evidence, because the court physically marks it with a sticker label. So you print photos, documents...even for video files, you have it on a disc or USB that the court can put its little evidence sticker on. And then, depending on the type of trial, all that evidence may go with a jury into a jury room to look over, and you don't really want to give them a wholeass laptop, because that's just asking for improper non-evidence information to be considered.
And if you're feeling like a jackass when complying with discovery demands, you can give the requested information on physical paper and that's fulfilling the demand (unless it was specifically for digital format) but it's not searchable in the way that a PDF would be--you can't control+F for the info you want, you have to read through reams of paper. Which you should do, for thoroughness, but...it's time consuming. So you can play petty little games and give people hardcopy to make their lives marginally more difficult.
Ultimately though, lawyers just really love deforestation. Fuck them trees.

I designed and hand bound It's Not the Same Anymore into a proper book!! It's been a long but rewarding process from start to finish, and I'm so happy to have a physical version now! :))
Thank you to @renegadepublishing for having so many good resources available for beginner bookbinders. Anyone else who'd like to try, start there!

the job of President was too big for Warren G. Harding and if there was an instruction manual, he couldn't find it.
I don't have anything to add to your totally unsolicited statement (everyone knows I just love being sent random, anonymous opinions) that had literally nothing to do with anything I've written recently.
BUT...believe it or not, there actually kind of IS an instruction manual for the Presidency. Jimmy Carter used to have a copy of this massive book in his office at the Carter Center titled "The Duties of the President of the United States of America".

In his wonderful 2004 book, Fraternity: A Journey in Search of Five Presidents (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO), Bob Greene writes about being shown the book by a Secret Service agent while at the Carter Center:
On a table was a huge hardbound book, and on its cover were the words: The Duties of the President of the United States. [The Secret Service agent] flipped it open. "Try learning that in two months," he said. I suppose I had never thought about it; I suppose it had never occurred to me that there was a manual. Because that is what this book was: an enormous volume filled, in minute detail, with the duties for which the President, as decreed by law, is responsible. Not the vague, all-encompassing responsibilities spoken of in civics books (or the Constitution), but the daily, department-to-department staff-office-by-staff-office tasks over which the President, at least in theory, has oversight. The book was like a combination motorcycle-repair manual/computer guide/university-doctorate-level encyclopedia; it was not bedtime reading or narrative history, it was nuts and bolts. It informed a President -- especially a newly elected President, getting ready to take office -- what was expected of him.
I'm dying to have a copy of that book. I haven't found it being sold anywhere over the years. I'm assuming that it was specifically printed and bound for the President. It looks like books that I have that were published by the Government Printing Office. They all are black hardcover books with gold print for the title, so I'm guessing that they are probably given to Presidents or important staff members in the Executive Office of the President. But I very much would like a copy. Hopefully the fine folks at the Government Printing Office or the National Archives sees this post and thinks that I deserve my own copy.

@deadbranch's 100-Word Fic Challenge
another one because I've realized these little challenges are great for getting myself in the mood to write
When a prank idea strikes, MacTavish is usually game. Today, however, even your puppy eyes and sheepish smile don't convince Soap immediately.
"Pink isn’t his color."
Your words drip with sarcasm, as you scoff, rolling your eyes, "He'll love it."
Soap’s protests only cease after you drag him to the laundry room.
You spend hours dyeing all of Ghost's skull masks and gloves pink. But the prank backfires when Riley shows up for the next mission sporting the pink set, handing you and MacTavish matching masks.
Price isn't happy.
Especially when Gaz questions his lack of a matching pink mask.

Do you ever think "Wow, I wish I had a sticker of [x]" and then you remember you have the power to do whatever you want forever? Because you do. You can just do shit. It's amazing.
