#ofmd fic
1k word fic prompt (tw past abuse, nothing more than the stuff in your latest fic): ed has lots of rules he follows to avoid getting physically and emotionally hurt in a relationship, and doesn't fully realize how fucked up it is and how small he's making himself until he starts dating stede and stede never gets angry at him or wants him to behave differently.
This prompt was perfect for adapting a scene that had to be cut from "If I Get Lost Along the Way!" Super happy you sent it in. <3
(Always happy to see prompts for 1k word fics in my inbox!)
--
Ed had a lot of rules.
His ex-boyfriends liked how he looked, if he presented himself the way they wanted. He knew how to look fuckable and grabbable and biteable, how to pull up his hair to show off his neck and pick shirts that hugged his waist just right. He knew to skip the eyeliner and earrings and cute crop-tops until he was sure his newest boyfriend wouldn’t insult him or tell him he looked like a slut.
And he knew how to behave.
He knew how to step lightly around drunks and creep quietly through the house in his socks for a snack when a guy was sleeping on the couch. He knew how to keep himself quiet and inoffensive, knew how to wait for his boyfriend’s opinion before sharing his own. He knew how to turn his eyes down and whisper I love you so they’d stop at just hitting him once. He let his boyfriends go through his phone and order for him in restaurants. He knew how to make himself small.
And dating Stede was a little scary, because - he knew how to look fuckable, but he wasn’t really sure how to keep Stede calling him cute and beautiful and precious. He was still trying to work out a pattern, but it was hard, because Stede said those things no matter what he was wearing. He stuck safety pins through the sleeves of shirts Stede liked, but before he knew it there was a pin through every shirt in his closet.
It scared him, how many of his rules Stede encouraged him to break.
Stede liked his laugh, asked his opinion, helped him with chores, told him he didn’t deserve to be hurt, said he’d never, ever hit him, and it made him feel big. It made him feel like it hurt to force himself back into being small.
Still, he tried to keep himself safe, and the first time he fucked up was scary as hell.
They’d just gotten off work and decided to catch a movie, and it had been the most fun Ed had ever had on a date. He was still getting used to thinking that about every date Stede took him on. They’d picked the movie together, and it was some dumb monster movie thriller. The movie was forgettable, but Ed loved the experience of sharing a big bucket of movie theater popcorn, sneaking sips from Stede’s slushie, clutching at Stede’s arm and hiding his face in his shoulder during the scary scenes…
And he was just so happy he forgot one of the rules.
Smiling so big still made his face hurt, and he stretched as he stood up, loving to see his beaming smile reflected right back at him on Stede’s face. “That was great!”
Stede scooped up their empty popcorn bucket, kissing him on the cheek, and he wrinkled his nose a bit as he glanced back at the credits rolling on the screen. “Did you really think so? I didn’t think it was very good.”
Ed froze, his smile dipping so quickly it felt unbelievable he’d ever been grinning like that in the first place. “Oh.”
He braced for impact. Stede was going to call him stupid, and tell him he had horrible taste, and he was never taking him to the movies again, and -
“I think,” Stede said, leading Ed down the aisle and tossing their trash in the bins, “that one was actually part of one of those cinematic universes. Wanna see if we can find the others streaming somewhere when we get home?”
Ed frowned, stuffing his hands in his pockets to keep himself from taking Stede’s hand. Was this some kind of trick? “Didn’t you just say you hated it?”
“Eh, hate’s a strong word, and you liked it.” Stede shrugged, frowning a bit at Ed’s expression. “Ed? Sweet pea, are you okay?”
Ed shrugged one shoulder. “Yeah. I’m sorry I dragged you into the dumb movie.”
“Love, we picked it out together.” Stede stopped Ed with a gentle hand on his arm, pulling him to the side. “We don’t have to like the same movies. It was worth seeing it, just because I like spending time with you. I had a lot of fun!”
“Oh.” Ed examined Stede’s face, watching for any sign of anger or mockery, and his smile felt tentative. “Okay. I had fun, too.”
“Great.” Stede kissed his cheek, and then they were heading back out to the car like Ed’s entire world hadn’t just turned upside down.
Ed decided to do a little test.
“Can we go get ice cream?” He asked as he buckled his seatbelt, watching Stede check his teeth for popcorn kernels in the rearview mirror.
“Sounds great,” Stede chirped. “You wanna pick the place?”
Moment of truth. Ed took a deep breath.
He clenched his hands into fists on his thighs, resisting the impulse to just suggest what he knew was Stede’s favorite ice cream parlor, even though it didn’t have Ed’s favorite flavors. “Can we go to Miracle Max’s?”
“Sure,” Stede said immediately.
“No, wait,” Ed blinked. “You hate Miracle Max’s.”
“It’s not my favorite, sure,” Stede frowned, “but it’s your favorite, and I picked last time. Ed, honey, seriously, are you okay?”
“Yeah,” Ed said, slowly, hardly daring to believe his luck. “Yeah, I’m fine. I’m good.”
When he got himself a sundae with five different flavors, Stede just laughed and told him he loved it. Fuckin’ weird.
Over the next few days, Ed tried breaking more of his rules. He laughed louder, he wore a crop-top and earrings, he styled his hair differently. He told Stede when he didn’t want to go somewhere, he shared the things that interested him.
He hadn’t realized how truly small he’d been making himself until Stede started telling him that he just wanted Ed, as he was, as big as he wanted to make himself.
It was nice, to just get to be Ed.

Make You Laugh
Eddie had never felt so wretched at the beginning of shoreleave. Normally feeling sick was confined to the last day as the crew suffered through their hangovers in an attempt to board the ship at least somewhat sober when the time came.
But Eddie hadn't had anything to drink. And he probably wouldn't get to. He'd have to pay the doctor and then shell out for a room in which to curl up for a few days and hopefully sleep it all off. That didn't leave anything for drink. It didn't leave much of anything for food either but one step at a time.
Fuck Hornigold and double fuck fucking Timothy (rest his soul).
Ed and Timothy had boarded the merchant ship together during the raid. The plan - the fucking plan - was that they'd fight together in the stern. But Timothy got ... excited or panicked or something and next thing Ed knew he was running up amidships slashing and hacking as he went. Which left Ed in the stern. By himself.
He'd done his best but his arm had gotten slashed all to hell. Which sucked but admittedly didn't hold a candle to what happened to Timothy when Hornigold found out he'd abandoned his post.
Ed hadn't fucking told. Timothy got himself caught up near the bow somehow and Ed heard the mate yelling "what are you doing up here?" and winced despite his frustration and the blood dripping down his arm.
Timothy was keelhauled later that night. And Ed was called forward by the mate and informed that he'd be holystoning the decks with sea water for losing control - shredded arm and all.
It hadn't been Ed's job to watch Timothy and he could tell the mate disagreed with the punishment. The mate didn't like when expectations weren't clear. But they were all just bobbing along in Hornigold's wake so the mate handed Ed the holystone and bucket and Ed holystoned the decks. His arm didn't like that.
His arm had not gotten better in the days that followed.
So now here he was on shoreleave, tired and sick and about to pay out all his share for a doctor and a bed to crawl into. Fuck.
"Eddie! Hey Eddie!" Jack popped out of a tavern door and ran up to Ed. "Wanna bet I can chug this whole gallon of milk?"
Eddie gave Jack a once over. He did, indeed, have a gallon of milk. "What do you have that for?" he asked.
"To chug. Nicked it when the barkeep's back was turned. Come on! Think I can chug it?"
"No," Ed said.
"Watch!" Jack winked, tipped his head back, and put the neck of the gallon to his lips. He started strong with at least five good swallows but he appeared to have forgotten he'd need to breathe at some point. His eyes began to take on a panicked look. At last he breathed in. But he forgot to take the bottle away from his lips so what he breathed in was milk.
Things got chaotic after that. Jack coughed and choked and wheezed and continued to pour a steady stream of milk down the front of his shirt.
Ed started laughing. He couldn't help it.
Then Jack started laughing, too. In between choking.
When Jack could speak again he rasped "Told you I could do it!"
That was it for Ed. "Fuck!" he gasped, laughing so hard tears ran down his cheeks. He kept trying to get himself under control then he'd look at Jack and start again.
Something was unfolding warm in his chest. That was the thing about a boy doing something stupid to make you laugh - it was stupid but it meant he wanted you to laugh.
"So where are you headed?" Jack asked once they'd finally laughed themselves out and Jack had wiped some of the milk out of his eyes.
Ed sighed. "Doctor. Fucked my arm up. Then inn, I guess. Need to sleep."
"Wanna go halvsies on a room?" Jack gave him an obviously calculating look.
"No, you'll be loud and invite the whole town over."
"Yeah, but you're fucked up enough to sleep through at least some of that. And I'll be gone during the day. Mostly. We can get a nicer room if we both chip in."
Ed thought about it. If he and Jack went in on a room together it would leave him enough coin to buy a square meal or two. And he'd have someone there if he got really sick. Jack was probably better than no one at all. Probably.
Ed would never tell but he was a little scared. At least someone would know if he died.
"Fuck it. Yeah. I'll go in on a room with you. Meet you at the inn?"
"Hell yeah!" Jack pumped the air. "Go do your doctor thing. I'll meet you at the inn."

Thinking about how DJenks saying Stede is Stede Bonnet the 15th and how that insinuates his father's name isn't Edward like it was in history, freeing up the potential for Ed to take Stede's last name without it being weird. Which is sweet and fun in its own right, but given ofmd hijinks this means they could maybe use their married names without revealing their identities, like:
One day while the boys are having a nice breakfast in town, someone approaches them, waving a wanted poster.
"Edward Teach. Stede Bonnet. The jig is up!"
Stede sighs. Not really the reaction expected of a pirate on the run with a bounty on his head.
"Not again," he mutters. Looks to his companion. "Do you want to explain this time?"
Their would-be capturer frowns. "Explain what exactly?"
"There's been a misunderstanding," Ed provides, "I'm Edward Bonnet. He's Stede Teach."
"Common misconception," Stede Teach chimes in.
"Unfortunate coincidence," Edward Bonnet adds.
"So....you're not pirates?"
"Christ, no. Innkeepers."
"We own the Mermaid." Stede takes a lazy sip of his tea, completely unbothered by the intrusion. "Near the beach."
"Oh. Well. That's alright then."

I have a burning curiosity that can only be relieved by an OFMD author. Why is there so much AU fanfiction in this fandom?? 😆 My AO3 search results with every alternate universe tag I can think of blocked are coming up with almost every result on the page filtered out! 🤣 I have nothing against them existing and I'm all for everyone writing what makes them happy, I just wonder how this fandom ended up being so full of them. I used to think SPN was oversaturated with AU's, but it can't hold a candle to OFMD! 😅
okay i wanted to give this a proper answer and also asked a few other authors, so here are some of the reasons we came up with - i think it's a combination of all of these:
while the show takes place in a historical setting, it's not historically accurate or even trying to be. it uses anachronistic dialogue and gives piracy a vibe more like a modern workplace. the characters become timeless in the sense that they are already "modern" characters put into a historical setting, and therefore fit just as well into any kind of AU setting. the characters are what make up the show more than the historical setting
the themes that the show deals with - relationships, sexuality, gender, trauma, family, self-image, mental illness - can be explored in so many different ways given different settings. it's very interesting to examine how the characters would deal with them when thrown into different circumstances and time periods
canon is really good, so while there are gaps in the narrative that can be explored, a lot of people are drawn to putting the characters in entirely different situations and/or feel like canon ground was covered pretty quickly
the story itself translates to other universes very easily. people want to enjoy that story and/or their favorite plot points again and again, but just writing down the plot of the show in the canon setting wouldn't make much sense. by throwing the characters into a different universe, you can pull scenes and plot from canon without just repeating it, putting a different spin on it
very few shows have (canonically) older queer people, and people like the idea of how that translates to other universes
we have (relatively) little canon and had a lot of time between seasons. considering the size of the fandom, amount of canon, and time since canon, the proportion of AUs is not surprising
if we assume proper tagging, AUs make up around 27% of all ofmd fanfics by number of works, but probably much more by word count, since a lot of canon fics tend to be shorter. in comparison, that number is around 20% for SPN and 34% for Merlin 🤷
also i've seen a lot of people starting out by only wanting to read canonverse fics until they gave an AU a try and BAM they were hooked 😌
and last but not least:
Ed and Stede fall in love in every universe 💗

Of all the days to finish a fic - well, at least I know it'll never be overwritten by canon? This is my take on a conversation between Ed and Stede, about Izzy, that I have been pondering since season 2 ended - about lies and trauma and hidden truths.
I spit on your grave (3487 words, T)
“You know we didn’t just happen to be there, right?”  “Oh?” Somehow the mechanics hadn't quite occurred to him, how Ed had arrived in the nick of time, an avenging angel wreathed in smoke and flame. He had simply appeared at the perfect moment.  “Babe, we followed your ship for days. What do you think I sent Izzy after you for?”  A pause, in which the OH reverberates louder in his head. He sees himself, a lifetime and less than a year ago, standing at a bar in a white suit. And Izzy, snarling about his boss.
Shout out to @veeagainsttheday for the beta, @emi--rose for bouncing some ideas, and @celluloidbroomcloset for an extremely well-timed little post that helped me figure out how to pull the ending together.

In this weird wonderful AU Georg fandom that is OFMD we have so many beautiful options. I was never, ever an AU type until now, but I truly can't get enough. Just last night I stayed up entirely too late because I finally got into Wave Hello to the Void, which on its face should absolutely positively not be My Thing, but the AUs we're blessed with here seem to always break that rule (especially with mxmollusca involved because holy shit have you read In Favor With Their Stars yet???).
We're so incredibly lucky y'all. I've been in fandom spaces for a long time but I've never felt this lucky.
We get different takes on time travel. We get the multiverse (and in so many beautiful forms). We get thought-provoking fantastical allegories and devastating (but often hopeful?) prequels with fascinating studies of character and fascinating takes on soul mates. We get complete fantasy overhauls that are gem-like in the beauty and precision of their prose and world-building. We get darling modern AUs and heartwrenching (but still ultimately happily-ending) modern AUs and modern AUs in basically every possible permutation, including ghost stories.
We get dystopias and apocalypses and post-apocalypses, meditations on love and existence, metafictional experiments in Not-RPF that draw even the biggest RPF skeptics (*points to self*) in, leaving us to wrestle with fundamentally altered attitudes toward storytelling that we may never be able to reconcile. Hell, even the missing scenes, canon-divergence, and fix-its hit different. Not to mention westerns with outlaws and cowboys, an archetype which conveniently also manages to scratch the proverbial pirate itch.
Even though pretty much every fandom has these things, for me at least they've never felt quite so imaginative and well-executed. We're so lucky to be here, to be writing for each other and reading for each other and for many of us, feeling creative for the first time in years or even decades. The gay pirates did that for us, because good source material can be the key to great fan works. And whether or not we get a third season, as much as they can't take the show from us, they also can't take away the gift that getting to experience all these fanworks has been. That's something I'm going to keep reminding myself while we wait.
and idk maybe tell your cowboy fanart friends that Ed can also ride horses as a steppe warrior or whatever

"So," Ed says while the crew gets the ship ready for Lucius and Pete's matelotage ceremony, shyly swaying his shoulder as he leans towards Stede in what is rapidly becoming Stede's favorite bit of Ed body language. "Zheng's offer."
And Stede hears the question he isn't asking. Hears the plea this time, too. This time he isn't drunk and coming off the high of being worshipped for killing a man to protect his loved ones. The renewed threat on their lives and watching Ed sob brokenly while Izzy died in his arms have sobered him up fast, instilled a new understanding of the way Ed views piracy in him and rearranged his priorities one more time. He thought he had this right when he left Barbados. No matter, he'll keep learning as he goes, keep listening and trying his best to do right by himself and by Ed.
"You wanted to become a fisherman." Ed winces. Stede doesn't hold a drop of resentment towards him, understands how easy it is to panic when faced with something as immense as what they share while the burdens of their pasts still plague them.
"I think I wasn't as well suited to fishing as a I thought," Ed says, ruefully.
"Nonsense. You're great at fishing." He beams at him, knows that Ed is capable of excelling at anything he sets his mind to. But it doesn't have to be fishing, it can be anything they choose. There's a whole world of possibilities open before them now. "What if we explored a different avenue?" he suggests.
Ed's eyes open wide, excited. Stede knows he's on the right track, the way his heart settles in his chest at the look in Ed's eyes tells him he can't go wrong if he follows this instinct for the rest of his days.
"Yeah? Like what?" He sounds impatient to get started.
"I remember you expressing an interest in becoming a restauranter once?"
"Eh, the food industry might be a tad too much work. We'd have to catch the food first, then cook it and serve all the customers..." he looks bashful, like there's something on the tip of his tongue that he's hesitant to speak out loud. "What if-?"
"Yes?" Stede asks, quiet and a little breathless with anticipation. His blood is thrumming, he wants to take this leap with Ed with every fiber of his being, is leagues more eager for this than he was when he first commissioned a ship and set off to sea.
"What about an inn?"
The memory flashes through his mind of Ed gifting a couple of kids on the Republic a bag of gold and a pair of knives, and claiming they weren't pirates but inn owners afterwards. How long has he been thinking about this? How long has this been a dream of his?
"Sounds fun." He smiles, radiant. He's thrilled to join Ed on their next adventure, inn ownership or fishing or bar and grill management. He would go anywhere with him.
"Yeah?" Ed sounds exhilarated too.
"Yes."
And there isn't an ounce of hesitancy in his voice this time around. He knows himself at last, knows the bottomless capacity for loving Ed his heart possesses, doesn't intend to ever let him go again.
Ed leans forward as if he intends to kiss him and Stede's heart starts beating faster, always greedy for Ed. But Ed stops, pauses halfway to Stede and looks doubtful all of a sudden.
"What about this?"
"This?"
"The ship. The crew. Piracy." Stede thinks he means the last one most of all. And god, what a fool he was to almost lose this to a fantasy. What he set out for a lifetime ago wasn't piracy, it was a dream of freedom and a place where he could be himself. He's never more himself than when he's standing next to Ed, looking the future in the eye together. This is his home, where his body and soul belong forever. The ship will continue to house their family and carry them safely across the sea, and they'll come back to visit as much as they want to. He can't wait to see what they get up to, either.
"You're the only adventure I need, Ed."
And Ed melts into his arms and kisses him sweetly.

The crack of a stick breaking made Kraken perk his ears, and Ed’s gaze followed the direction they turned towards. Hm. Not a very good hiding place, behind a tree. Not in a naked winter forest. “Come out, you!” Ed called. “Unless you want me to come get you myself, which I promise you’ll regret.”
Finally thrilled to post my art for #OFMDReverseBang2023 ! Check out my RBB partner's @bizarrelittlemew INCREDIBLE fic!
Dear Ida! I enjoyed working with you sm and i am so glad we managed to supply this fandom with another pair of our creations! Rock On!

When Stede wakes, it's on a dirty floor. He's wearing the same outfit he's been wearing for lord knows how long, and he's desperately in need of bathing. His hair sticks to his forehead with sweat — the summer humidity has been brutal the past few days, even with the gentle sea breeze. It doesn't help, either, that Ed's long limbs always end up sprawled all over Stede, and while Stede would never be ungrateful for Ed's company, he could do without the extra body heat.
Stede gently frees himself from Ed's embrace, taking care not to wake him, and rises to his feet. Ed doesn't stir. A part of Stede aches at the fact that Ed is so used to living in these conditions, and he laments the fact that he is unable to provide him with something better, something worthy of him. Oh, well. The time for that will come, Stede thinks with a quiet sigh.
A few days have passed since The New Revenge sailed away from the little island where Stede and Ed have taken up residence. During his time at Jackie's, Stede had grown somewhat accustomed to less than ideal living quarters, but living in this ramshackle abode that Ed refuses to call anything but an "inn" and hunting for all their own food has been... challenging. The only thing that makes it bearable is the fact that Ed is here with him.
Stede decides that he'll go for a quick swim before Ed wakes up, and from there they'll decide where to hunt for breakfast. Or, perhaps one of the nearby store merchants will take pity on them and give them some food for free. Stede finds himself wishing, not for the first time, that he hadn't renounced all his wealth, or convinced Ed to give away all his treasure. His belly rumbles, hollow with hunger. He ignores it.
He walks sluggishly to the wooden door of the inn and opens it, and he's greeted with the quiet light of daybreak and a slight breeze from the calm sea. He takes a deep breath, savoring the salty sea air and trying to expel the smell of rotting wood from his nostrils.
As he surveys the expanse of the ocean, he sees a ship on the horizon, with large imposing sails and a black flag on the mast. It looks almost like... Stede squints his eyes, and— yes, it is the Revenge! Stede's heart leaps. Have they missed the cunning guidance of their captain already? Are they back for another adventure? He smiles at the thought.
A loud snore from Ed brings Stede back to the present, and Stede instantly feels guilty for even entertaining the thought. As much as he loves the adventure and being at sea, he loves Ed more, and he can't ask Ed to go back to that life. No, he'll just have to tell the crew thanks, but no thanks. He's all in on being an innkeeper. Or a shack-keeper.
As Stede continues to watch the Revenge navigate the calm waters, he can't help but notice that it seems like it's getting smaller. He watches for a few more moments before confirming that yes, it's definitely sailing away. But why?
Stede steps out onto the porch of the inn and he nearly trips on something that has been placed just outside the front door. A large chest has been left on the doorstep, and on it is a note written in Lucius's neat handwriting.
To get you started.
Stede's heart swells as he opens up the chest, and he smiles when he sees what's inside. Apart from a considerable amount of gold and priceless antiques that the crew no doubt plundered from some unsuspecting vessel, a handful of other treasures occupy the box as well. Stede sits down on the porch and looks over each item with care, and by the time he's gone through everything his cheeks are damp with grateful tears. He's conscious of a stirring behind him, and he wipes his eyes, slightly embarrassed even though he knows Ed is the last person who would make fun of him.
"Mornin'," Ed says from the doorway, and Stede turns to smile at him. He'll never get used to this, seeing Ed with sleep-tousled hair and hearing his gruff morning voice. He nods toward the chest. "What's that?"
"The crew stopped by this morning when we were sleeping and left us some gifts. Come take a look," Stede says, and Ed joins him on the porch and sits down next to him.
Stede first pulls out the food, his mouth watering just looking at it: a jar of marmalade, a handful of oranges, and six sandwiches, wrapped with care, no doubt, by Roach. Ed takes one of the sandwiches, and wastes no time in unwrapping it and taking a bite. He makes a lewd noise as he tastes it. "That's a damn good sandwich," he says through a mouthful of peanut paste and some kind of fruit jam.
Stede sets one of the remaining sandwiches aside to enjoy later, and then pulls out the next item: a large knitted blanket, which Stede recognizes instantly as Wee John's handiwork. It won't do them much good now, but when summer turns into fall and the nights get colder, Stede is certain he'll be grateful for the extra warmth.
There's a small throwing knife which Stede figures is a gift from Jim, and the words "hidalgo pirata" have been carved into the handle.
There's a whittled... something in there too, which Stede presumes was made by Black Pete. It looks kind of like a person, but Pete was never all that great at whittling, so Stede isn't entirely sure. He wonders if it's meant to be the wooden boy from the story the crew loved so much. He caresses its face absentmindedly.
A fishing rod, presumably from Fang, is also in the chest, and a necklace with a shark tooth on it has been tied around the handle.
A teal earring, which Stede has seen Oluwande wear before, has also been gifted to them.
Even Zheng and Auntie seemingly contributed: Stede pulls out a few jars of sweet-smelling tea leaves, and a few soft towels.
The final two things, though, are the ones that brought tears to Stede's eyes. "Look at this," he says to Ed, who has unwrapped a second sandwich and is devouring that, too.
Stede pulls out a black flag, and unfolds it to reveal a motif of two merpeople, one holding a spear and the other, upside down, holding a red heart. Their free hands hold each other. Intertwined, Stede thinks, and smiles, imagining Frenchie mulling over this project just for them.
The final item in the chest is a sketch, drawn by Lucius: a group portrait of everyone on the crew, including Izzy and Ivan, standing side by side, triumphantly. A family. Stede knows instantly that this will be the first and most treasured piece of decor to grace their inn.
"They put all this together just for us?" Ed asks, surprised and touched.
"Yeah," Stede says, unable to look away from the family portrait. His eyes fall to three words that Lucius has written under the sketch, and his heart swells.
Revenge Lives On.

As promised! Izzy-centric fic recs!
These are all gonna be pre S2 (and all Steddyhands because I was obsessed for like a year)
Tumblr media
@crabgrave
Starting off strong with
1) Battle of the Boyfriends
Tumblr media
This fic makes you laugh before it makes you cry. A steddyhands centric dramady mostly from Izzy's point of view, and I love this Izzy very much.
Tumblr media
Isn't he precious? They absolutely hurt his feelings
2) Doldrums
This one is a two part series that starts with Izzy leaving the Revenge as Stede and Ed reunite post S1. He recruits Calico Jack and becomes captain of his own ship while he and Jack have a lot of sex (I actually enjoy Jack in this one lol) Ed and Izzy eventually partially work things out
The second part involves Izzy back on the ship in the beginning stages of steddyhands
Tumblr media
I think the real strength of this series is Izzy's interactions with everyone, but especially Stede and Oluwande
3) The Nook is for Talking Shit
This is a Calico Jack hate!fic and I'm here for it. Also steddyhands because I've got a problem
In this fic Stede and Izzy bond offer a mutual enemy, and Izzy teaches Stede how to craft the perfect insult
Tumblr media
I like that they laugh together, and I really like it when Stede stands up for Izzy ♡ (I also like that Izzy has a very good reason to hate Jack that involves him having been injured very badly)
4) Navigating By the Light of Your Stars
A delicious sandwich of a trilogy where the bread is BlackHands and Stizzy relationship studies, and the meat is steddyhands smut.
Featuring: GrayAce!Izzy, whump, Stede’s introduction to BDSM, and discussions of mortality ♡
Tumblr media
5) A Pirate Triptych
Another steddyhands trilogy!
This is one I've seen on many recommendation lists and it is worth it. These men and their guilt I swear ♡
Tumblr media
Post S1 Izzy schemes to get Stede back into Ed's good graces at his own expense.
If you like Izzy whump this is the fic for you
6) More Vivid than Sunsets, Brighter than Stars
On a shorter and sweeter note this little steddyhands bdsm fic explores Izzy running his mouth and Stede and Ed going a little too far in order to punish him. Everyone gets their feelings hurt ♡
Tumblr media
Everyone is characterized well here but Ed is kind of the star of the show, he has to mediate this incident and he's hilarious
Tumblr media
7) House of Mirrors
Tumblr media
This one is pure Izzy whump with steddyhands caretaking. Izzy is sick, Ed spirals, Stede is Exhausted (tm)
I reread this one often
anyway I think this is what I have for now, I might post another list at some point because there are a couple of longfics that are very near and dear to my heart, plus S2 is not gonna stop me from reading new fic. I look forward to seeing more amputee!Izzy

Writer friends, please help me out!
I have some fics I really love and want to draw some fanart for. Is it okay to do that and present it to the author, or is it better to ask them for permission before drawing something based on their work?

Stipulations
My heart hurt when Ed got shackled to the rail in S2. I needed them to talk it through as a crew so fic happened.
Ed was not a master in the art of negotiation.
Or, well, that wasn't entirely true. He was great at aggressive negotiation. He was great at negotiation where there was a show of strength (or the illusion of strength) and an opponent forced to decide how much they wanted to risk. He was excellent at the old 'shot across the bow.' He wasn't great at the sort of negotiation where all you had was your earnest heart and a desire to go home.
He hadn't had much practice.
But he had his earnest heart and he wanted to go home so he was going to give it a try.
The crew had let him stay one more night. They'd even seemed chill about it. He really hadn't expected that. Now dawn light was creeping into the galley and in a few hours the crew was going to "figure this all out" as Oluwande had called it and Ed wanted to stay. He wanted to make it up to them. "Captain goes down with the ship" had always really meant "captain takes responsibility" and Ed wasn't captain anymore (was he? he felt a brief jolt of anxiety like a task left undone...no, probably not...). But he still wanted to take responsibility for what he could.
It was just....he had some stipulations.
"Stede," Ed whispered. "Stede wake up."
"Hmmph?" Stede rolled over and Ed was briefly stunned by his sleep tousled hair. God. "What is it, Ed? Are you hurting?" He looked so concerned. G o d.
"No," Ed said, "not really." Though he was hurting some - a mutiny would do that to you. "Not much... medium amount," he amended, trying to be truthful. "I just... the crew's gonna decide about me staying and I want to stay. But I don't want them to shackle me to the rail again." Ed fought down a surge of panic at the thought. "I don't like feeling trapped. It's fine if they want... I don't know, to get a few punches in. That's fair. But no surprise punches. They can do it to my face. I mean like ... they can face me about it... though I guess they can also punch my face. You know what I mean."
Ed was not going to feel trapped and he was not going to feel on edge. Everything else was fair game. But sometime during the night he'd realized he couldn't stay somewhere he didn't feel safe.
What he'd do he didn't know... but he couldn't stay. It was an awful negotiating position that boiled down to "please agree to these requirements or else I'll go back to the woods you banished me to in the first place."
Ed sighed. Then he glanced up and realized Stede looked heartbroken. Fuck.
"It's not you," Ed sighed. "I'd love to stay for you... it's just..." I might not be able to.
"It's not that," Stede said. "I just wish I hadn't. I wish they hadn't. I wish I'd protected you."
"You couldn't," Ed said. "Not exactly captain either, were you? A mutiny will do that. The whole thing about a mutiny is that it blurs who's in charge, blurs who makes decisions. And I knew what I was getting into. Not like I haven't had worse. I just..."
"You don't want it to happen again."
"Yeah."
"It wont. No one's going to punch you either. To your face or otherwise."
Ed smiled. It felt a little wobbly. But he could smile at Stede now. Stede looked so certain. Ed was not at all certain. He was pretty sure he was at least going to get punched. But Stede's optimism had always been appealing (as well as wildly sexy) so what the hell.
--
When Ed heard the crew's stipulations he laughed. A cat bell! He supposed that was fair. He'd maybe played up the sneaking around over the past few months.
But it felt - it felt like like chance to start over. Captain goes down with the ship. Captain incites a mutiny and wears a sackcloth for a while as a promise that he won't hurt his crew again. Yeah, that was fair.
And Stede's face - Stede's face - when he said "they've agreed not to hurt you - no one's going to hurt you on this ship again. You're safe."
I'm here. You're safe.
Yeah, that was.... That was.... yeah, that was... That was a lot. But it was good. Ed was pretty sure it was good.
--
So it came as an awful surprise when Jim found Ed in the shady spot he'd claimed on deck and said "Hey, about shackling you to the rail..."
Because fuck. Fuck. Of course they'd reconsider. It made sense but Ed had trusted them. And the Revenge was kind of a ways from land and maybe they'd give him back the complimentary dinghy. Hopefully they'd give him back the complimentary dinghy. But so much for cohabiting with Stede... that is... if they even let him leave at all. What if...
Apparently all this showed on his face. Because the next thing Jim said was "I think maybe you need to breathe?"
Ed took a shaky breath. "What about it?" he asked. He was pleased that his voice came out reasonably level.
"I'm really sorry we did that."
Wait. What?
"Wait. What?" Ed said.
Jim flushed. "You weren't... you were hurt and... you weren't going to hurt anyone. The rest of the stuff - not gonna apologize for that because it was fully self defense. But that... yeah."
"It's fine," Ed said. "Better to overreact than underestimate someone probably."
"It wasn't fine," Jim insisted. "It's not gonna happen again. We were... we were really jumpy. Roach made us a piñata and a cake and we nearly stabbed him. But still."
"A piñata?"
"Yeah, they wanted to like, blindfold us. To... reassure us we were safe and valued, I think?"
Ed blinked. This fucking crew.
"But yeah," Jim sighed. "You're safe and valued and shit, I guess. I don't have a piñata."
"That's okay," Ed said. "Don't need one."

they knew exactly what they were doing when they put Ed in a cat collar and had him tell Stede to practice his captain voice on him. they knew the fic we would write. they fucking KNEW.
we're always like "omg they're making this season specifically for US" and it's so true, but now it's so especially fucking true... like goddamn. like this show is specifically engineered to produce more weird PWPs by alsaurus. even if I weren't possessed by the voices of Ed and Stede being insane and in love, I would feel obligated to write this shit. when will I ever have these exact days between episodes 5 and 6 to write this shit? this is a once in a lifetime opportunity.
anyway, luckily for me and everyone, I AM possessed by the voices of Ed and Stede, and I AM compelled beyond reason to write down the weird shit they get up to in my head.
so please enjoy Kitty and the Captain, let me know what you think, and then sit tight until the next episodes make me even more insane ✌️
