If you want reason #341 why I am currently gnashing my teeth: I'm rewatching season 1 of OFMD and realizing that the only times that Jim ever smiles are because of Olu (especially in 1x7 and 1x10), they are ready to knife Spanish Jackie just to get their family dagger back, and yet there is NO FALLOUT in Season 2 from being forcefully separated from Olu for months on end. Like, I know that Jim did literally conk Blackbeard on the head with a cannonball and all, but I feel like I would have ascended to another plane if they just got to do a little light stabbing or yelling or SOMETHING because the light of their life was stolen and possibly murdered off-screen (they have no idea whether he survived the marooning or not until he shows back up in 2x3).

Ooh, or give me a reunion scene where they hug and/or kiss and they're framed by the sun behind them. If Gentlebeard gets to have the moon, then Jim and Olu can have the sun. I mean, not to steal from a fanfic, but Olu's smile is what brightened Jim's life in the first place. I could have really used some of the cinematographic cues from Season 2 being redistributed from Gentlebeard and onto Tealoranges as the 2nd main couple, y'know?

Can we talk about the fact that in episode 201, Ed compares himself to a bird that never returns to land. And the first time he actually returns to land is after he reunites with Stede. And after Buttons transmogrifies into a bird and Ed runs after Stede, this song plays:

(Also I’m sorry “sunsets, full moons/don’t turn you on/like an untied dog/you just had to run” is actually about Stede omg. The full moon and sunset being the two most romantic moments in season 1 followed by Stede running ahsdyjaksjs)

three four ships: look, i tried to narrow this down to three but i thought of these four and got sad at the thought of not including them all so y'all are getting an extra one.

doumeki/watanuki/himawari (xxxholic) - MY BABIES WHO I LITERALLY NAMED MYSELF AFTER!!! listen, my son watanuki deserves to have a stoic but protective boyfriend and a sunshiney girlfriend who hug him lots and help him see he's worth loving. AND my daughter himawari deserves to be loved without fear of accidentally doing harm. AND my son doumeki deserves to be with the people he cares about despite the fact that they're both self sacrificing as fuck. this is the trio of my dreams and i will love them until i die.

satoshi/daisuke (dn angel) - so like...this ship is from a manga that a) isn't popular and b) i would not recommend despite the fact that it had a vice grip on me as a fourteen year old. that being said these two anime boys are truly THE BLUEPRINT against which i compared all other ships for YEARS. like, there was a time where how much i loved a ship could be directly correlated to how much they reminded me of satoshi and daisuke. they were IT. and this ship truly gave us everything! the romeo and juliet parallels of them coming from feuding families!!! the enemies to friends (to lovers in my heart) of it all!!! they are THEE fire and ice ship!!! THEE sunshine one and stoic one!!! literally never talk to me about the canonical dn angel ending i want to believe in my imagined ending where they were allowed to be in love.

nico/karolina (runaways) - this is specifically about the comic book version but the tv show version is also good! i remember reading the first few comics series like...a decade ago and OHHHH MAN these two messy girls really got me. i remember reading the first conversation that implied karolina was a lesbian and becoming the living embodiment of this emoji 👀. and then nico's whole mess of a sexuality crisis after karolina leaves? poetic cinema if i've ever seen it. i spent so many years holding a torch for these two that when they actually got together in the comics in 2018 i legit bawled my eyes out. i read the words "i'm not confused anymore, karrie. i'm not scared. i know what i want" and i DIED. their first kiss has been the background on my phone for nearly five years. they are my everything i am soooo serious.

ed/stede (ofmd) - OH YOU KNOW THE GAY PIRATES HAD TO BE HERE. when i say they rewired my brain that is in no way and exaggeration. i can vividly recall scrolling through tumblr and seeing how much people were talking about this show and thinking "okay but is it really gay or is this just another tumblr thing?" LIKE. I HAD NO IDEA. staying up until two a.m. to watch episodes 9 and 10 and feeling every human emotion all at once is a moment i will never recreate. i could've done anything that night. i could've fought god and won. it's ten months later and i still think about these two every fucking day. i truly can't wait to see more of them. david jenkins thank you for my life.

first ever ship:

arnold/helga (hey arnold) - i was like...seven and didn't know what fandom was yet but i watched every episode with baited breath waiting for these two to get together lmao. the romeo and juliet episode is burned into my brain for all time. when the jungle movie came out and they finally got together after OVER A DECADE of waiting i literally went out and bought a cake to celebrate.

i'm between books at the moment but the one i most recently finished was lost boy by christina henry. it was genuinely the most five out of ten book i've ever read. like...not bad by any means but so meh i have no words.

my plan is to read the magicians by lev grossman next because i miss those characters more than i can say but like hell am i gonna watch the show again after...all that. i heard the books are worse soooooo we'll see how far i get.

currently watching:

the mayfair witches - i recently watched the first two episodes and i really enjoyed them! i've never read the books so everything is new and exciting to me. i'm looking forward to seeing where this story goes!

If you don't mind me asking, can I ask your top favorite characters from OFMD? And your top 5 (or top 3) moments from the series? Sorry if you've answered this question before....Thanks....

Okay, so...

Top character is Ed/Blackbeard. From literally the first moment he appeared I went....ooooohhh? Like, both in a damn that man is attractive way, but also...OH. He is me and I am him and I GET him. I'm not above identifying with the person in all black acting tough but secretly wanting soft, pretty things and someone to love him for who he is and not the mask.

And, like second favorite character is....literally everyone else? IDK I guess I have to put Stede because he's Stede, but I have much less of a personal connection to his character.

I do really love Mary Bonnet because I love what they did with her in episode 10 and how they let her be her own person who has really blossomed and created a new life for herself once freed of society's constraints of marriage. And I still say that is Not a straight woman.

But honestly I love all the characters of the Revenge, with maybe special mention for Jim and Lucius and Olu. I really want to see more of the others, like Frenchie and Buttons and Wee John. (Also I just really love the representation of Wee John for us "I'm fucking tall and my back fucking hurts so I'm sitting down" folks. We can spot our own.) (Also yes I know the actor has back issues. As one of my doctors once said of my own back issues "well, giraffes have neck problems...")

Top 3-5 Moments from the Series

-- Ep 4, like all of Ed's expressions as he watched Stede. Like, the "it's so hard to find someone doing something original" scene. The closet scene. At the end, the way he looks at Stede during the marmelaide scene. That was when I was IN this show. Because Taika is playing Love At First Sight so well in his eyes. Or at least infatuation. Fascination. And as someone else said, the fact that it's BLACKBEARD who falls first. That's something.

--Ep 5, the "you wear fine things well" scene. Poetic cinema. Again with Taika's eyes in that scene.

--"The Chain" scene. Epic, funny, sweet. It's the essence of the show in like a minute. Also the foot touches, omg.

--The kiss scene. Not so much for the kiss, which honestly is awkward in a way I think is realistic, but for Ed's whole everything in how he presents his case. And then Stede, and the way he is happy but also doubting quietly in the background. Not willing yet to trust in this good thing he's presented with. Not sure he's on board with Ed's impetuous plan. And that's all in the expressions on Rhys's part, so kudos.

--Can I say all of ep 10? Like, I ADORE the entire episode from the Mary parts in the beginning to the Sad Breakup Ed in the Emotion Robe. Stede not fitting in back in civilized life and taking a fucking knife to Doug's throat. Mary trying to murder him with a skewer. The "his name is Ed" scene, which...no words.

And then, and then, Ed's descent into darkness and The Kraken/Blackbeard with Avalanche in the background. I can't. Screaming, crying, throwing up.

Episode 10 is what took me from a casual fan of the show to fucking OBSESSED because it's everything I want from a narrative.

Oh noooo there are so many good ones, l would nominate the entire roster of Dark if I could, but if I narrow it down I think it's pretty clear that babygirl Jonas Kahnwald and girlboss Claudia Tiedemann own my entire heart

11. Biggest squee moments of the year

Realizing how truly unapologetically gay OFMD was. The kiss between Stede and Ed......poetic cinema. Getting the s2 announcement was also so much fun and felt like such a fan effort :') People wanted to see those gay pirates keep falling in love!!!

Also the huge love and support the cast and crew of 1899 have been showing for their little forming fandom so far! Liking, commenting, sharing people's work......Bo even shared one of my own pieces on insta, it was unreal. Artists loving artists the way god intended. It's so beautiful :')

I also need to mention the absolutely stunning fuckers that did Merrywyn day with me this year. Y'all had no idea what was going on, but you wanted to contribute to that tiny rarepair anyway and I salute you 🙏

21. Overall favorite fandoms of the year

The tiny but emerging 1899 fandom! So many nice people, I hope it grows over the coming year as we keep losing our minds at what Jantje and Bo are cooking up for us :')

Lucius carries his own wreckage around from Blackbeard’s time as god, but it’s a different sort of shipwreck, a different sort of chain. There is a grief, but not a guilt. At least, not anymore. While he was trapped, he felt guilty for surviving when he wasn’t sure if Pete was still alive, but once Blackbeard was gone, he didn't have to carry a giant length of crimes around his neck because Blackbeard had told him that either he committed these atrocities, or he'd die, and he had to get back to Olu and protect everyone else at all costs.

Jim isn’t going to downplay the way that that trunk haunts Lucius. Its ghost still physically haunts him, in the form of his dizzy spells, but he doesn’t have wanted posters. He doesn’t have crimes. He doesn’t have the shame of murder and the blood of others clinging to his hands. He doesn’t have to look over his shoulder in case someone is hunting him-

Or, rather, scratch that last one. Because Lucius doesn’t have to look over his shoulders due to people hunting him for a bounty, but someone did murder him in cold blood. Jim had to live with threats for months, up until the moment Blackbeard actually shot Izzy; Lucius had to live with first-hand knowledge of hands that were willing to shove him overboard.

Jim doesn’t know what ghosts Lucius clings to. They only know what ghosts cling to them, what ghosts dig their claws in and refuse to let go, no matter how many times Jim tries to bury them for good.

Founding members of the "Fuck Blackbeard" club (and "Fuck the People Who Raised Me" club as well). Two of my three favorite characters in the series. They are there for each other at the critical moments and understand each other so well (and have a great dynamic when Mel is added in Season 3). Also, the fact that their friendship begins with Lucius stealing a dagger for Jim AFTER Jim literally nearly kills Lucius gets me every time.
