So something I absolutely adore about the way Izzy is depicted on screen with his new leg is that he is consistently leaning on or being supported by other characters. It's not all the time and it's not always just for mobility: Sometimes he has to lean on someone because he's fatigued or just a little off balance. And he has moments where he takes things slower or has to really push himself just to like sit down (like how he kind of groans when he sits down next to Stede at Spanish Jackie's.)
I'm not an amputee but I wear leg braces and my left hip is fucked and from my perspective this is a really accurate representation of disability on screen because it presents a balance between things Izzy can do and times he needs or wants help.
I don't watch a ton of movies or TV so maybe there have been better representations of disability on screen since when I was younger, but in the past, I noticed media that showed disability (especially with an able bodied actor in the role) would either 1. make the character visibly disabled but functionally able bodied (like a bionic arm or magically regaining the ability to walk once the plot requires it) or 2. just sideline the character from most of the action to get around times when the disability aspect would get in the way with traditional staging or action scenes. And they nearly never show someone leaning on another character unless absolutely necessary for obvious mobility reasons, not for things like being tired or regular background movement.
But ofmd shows different visible aspects of disability realistically and it's so much better for the characters and the story.
The same is true for Wee John in a lot of ways, he sits most of the time but is rarely removed from the action, and other characters move about him in an inclusive way.
Yeah. I love it all. It's so good.

I just realised, Ed didn't return to the revenge to rescue Stede. Not entirely.
When he see's the three english warships he knows the Revenge is done for and anyone on board is going to be killed or captured.
So his decision to leave and go back to the ship isn't to rescue Stede.
It's to either sacrifice his life for Stede's.
Or die beside him.
Ed confesses to Nigel's murder to try to spare Stede.
Ed has no reaction to being told he's being sentenced to death other than "Yep."
But when Stede is sentenced to death Ed panics.
In hindsight his decision to take the act of grace is a simple one. It's actually better than he could have hoped for because up to that moment he knew they were probably going to die anyway. He's Blackbeard for godsake. He knew he was done for when he set foot back on the revenge.
But watching Stede die and being made to live without him? Nah. Unacceptable.
He'd rather sign away both their lives so they can die together fighting a war for the king.
Ed was really ready to die. No escape plan. Every plan he had was aimed at not being made to live without Stede.
And then Stede kissed him back and suddenly he realised they could actually have a life together and THAT? That is worth having an escape plan for.
I can't help but wonder if Ed kissed Stede when he was mid sentence because he was expecting a rejection and couldn't stand the idea of it. Had to silence him because if he didn't kiss him right now he would die without knowing what it was like. And they are both going to die anyway. Why not just go for it?
He didn't dare dream, even with Lucius telling him more than once, that Stede could want him.
I've hurt my own feelings.
I need a lie down.

the thing thats disgusting me the most about all this is david jenkins saying that izzy was like a "father figure" to ed. because like where??? idk i cant put my thoughts together too well rn but like. theres always been a very clear power imbalance on ed's side with ed being izzy's boss and all. in season one izzy states multiple times that ed has always been a brilliant sailor and fighter and he was honored to work for him, when he (presumably for the first time ever) threatens ed he gets the tables flipped on him almost immediately, he suffers continuous abuse at the hands of ed, etc. and that to me makes it impossible to place izzy in a mentor/father figure role because a father figure is supposed to have strength and autonomy and its only after izzy has been freed from ed that he gets to experience those. idk its such an odd and mischaracterizing statement that david (from what he said) based his entire decision to kill off izzy off of. not to even mention him teasing edizzy and steddyhands all throughout his interviews for the season to then turn around and say izzy was a father figure all along? mf did u forget u had this father figure sing the soundtrack to the main couple's first time literally two eps ago?? im so so disgusted

I get it, I do.
End the part of the narrative that anchors Ed to his pirate persona forever. Bury the past, all of that. Very pretty. My nerdy-about-themes part is content.
BUT COME ON
I loved u since the first Twat. Always in my heart, our unicorn. You were done dirty.

If you’d told me 10 years ago fucking Rhys Darby would be playing a flamboyant pirate who turns into a mermaid to rescue Māori Blackbeard because he had a mid life crisis and lost it a bit after their breakup I’d combust
What is this show.
It’s a a fever dream in New Zealand font and I love it

I just noticed that when Izzy gets up and says "Bonnet, good to see you," that Frenchie gets up and follows close behind him and I know it was probably a choreography thing to get Frenchie closer for the ensuing dialogue...but my head says Protective Frenchie is Protective and no one can take that from me.

Look, Izzy is a complex character. I understand this.
But that man really looked at a 'just beginning to heal from a heartbreak' Edward Teach who was finally up and about, cleaning his living space and beginning to fully embrace himself with honesty and vulnerability and just ....CRUSHED him.
"I should have let the English kill you."
The hurt. That hurt look on his face! Remember, Izzy sheltered him from the crew for those few days, covering for him and sending in Lucius, keeping everyone else at bay. Ed thought he understood. And this is where he begins to realise Izzy only ever cared about preserving the image of Blackbeard. Not his dignity as a person in pain.
"This...whatever it is you've become, is a fate worse than death."
You can see him try to recover enough to be 'tough' and laugh it off.
"Well, I am still Blackbeard."
And Izzy responds loudly and aggressively, encroaching on his space, shoving the mocking cartoon image of Ed in his face and saying that this is the only version of him that is acceptable.
"NO. This! This is Blackbeard. Not some namby pamby in a silk gown PINING FOR HIS BOYFRIEND."
Izzy mocks his pain. Proving he never understood, merely tolerated and humoured him. He mocks Ed's very real affection and love for Stede and belittles the hope he held onto that Stede might come back.
The betrayal stings and Ed explodes, throwing Izzy back against a wall by his throat.
"CHOOSE YOUR NEXT WORDS WISELY, DOG!"
But this of course is exactly what Izzy wants. And he doesn't only approve, he tries to initiate physical affection immediately afterwards. Attempting to cradle his face.
"There he is."
Edward smacks his hand away and if you listen carefully, gasps in dismay before physically stepping back, distancing himself. He's disgusted. His emotions are being toyed with, not just as a means to an end, but for Izzy's own gratification.
He expected the angry outburst would pull Izzy into line but it played directly into his hands. The shock and anger is clear on his face and he takes a few deep breaths here, trying to get his bearings again.
Izzy doesn't let up, speaking as he takes a few steps closer, slowly encroaching on Ed's space again.
"Blackbeard is my captain. I serve Blackbeard, not Edward. Edward better watch his fucking step."
Con O'Neill makes the acting choice here to glance downwards a few times while speaking, not to avoid eye contact but instead doing the same thing he did with Lucius during the "Have you ever been sketched" scene. His eyes are flicking down to Ed's mouth. Body language for "I am thinking about doing intimate things with you." Objectifying him at the same time as he threatens him.
The words here are important as well, Izzy just stated that Edward, who he is and who he has settled into as a person, is no longer safe around Izzy.
When Izzy leaves and we hear the door close you can hear Ed let go of a long breath, sighing as he instinctively attempts to pull the robe closed because in that moment he felt exposed and vulnerable and didn't like it.
His expression at the beginning of the scene and at this moment are polar opposites. His face was open, happy and calm. Now it's tight, closed off and troubled.
And the final nail in the coffin comes when we hear the men up on deck calling for "Eddie" to come sing them another song.
In my head, this is the moment Ed realises that those men could get him killed.
Taika and Con absolutely slayed the acting in this scene and the whole arc for season 2 arguably pivots off it. Kings.
Having said that, Izzy Hands it is ON SITE for what you did to my boy.
