in no particular order...

different class (1995) - pulp. this is not my no1 album of all time because i don't have a favorite album of all time, but this album is in part representative of "getting into music" to me. i love 90s britpop, whatever that means for a random american and this is my fav of em all (though i do actually quite rate this is hardcore in pulp's discography). "common people" is one of the songs of ALL TIME. god jarvis's little sing-song sleazyness gets me. really, really, really great classic performance of it at glasto 1995...for some reason "pencil skirt" also always really hits.

home video (2021) - lucy dacus. the newest album on this list by a long shot, but it's had songs in my top5 year end lists since it came out. i've also seen lucy live <3. this album rises above some of the others in similar company (punisher - phoebe bridgers, the boygenius ep, etc) because i never get tired of it. "first time" "hot & heavy" "brando" and "triple dog dare" are nearly always standbys in my listening history. probably gonna be an album-i-listened-to-in-college classic forever...

songs of love and hate (1971) - leonard cohen. maybe none of my favorite leonard cohen songs are on this album, but as a single work, this album stuns me. possibly the most transfixing 44:21 i've ever heard. his lyricism in particular is -- i can't even describe it. the mix with his voice, the sparseness of the instrumentation at time, the harmonies. i'm not a big stories guy but in this, yeah, the songwriting, the stories. i don't think there's another album like this one out there, really.

if you're feeling sinister (1998) - belle & sebastian. the first time i heard this album, i thought i had never heard an album so perfect. i love songs off of it but i nearly always listen to it whole. i love, love, love b&s's early sound (twee, if you will), and stuart murdoch's lyrics really, really shine. this is one of my favorite albums to listen to when i have a headache because it's lovely to just, focus on but not grating at all. i really love "judy and the dream of horses" and "get me away from here i'm dying". really, a beautiful work

rumours (1977) - fleetwood mac. i was sort of scrolling through some of my playlists trying to decide what to put on this list (it's a bit weighted towards stuff that's in rotation now) and i couldn't leave off fleetwood mac (in part to represent the huge part of my music taste that is like. classics 1965-1980). stevie nicks was one of my earlier music obsessions (the OG was the beatles). so many wonderful songs and riffs. i know this was left off the original 12-inch but "silver springs" is one of my favorite songs forever and ever and ever...

nebraska (1982) - bruce springsteen. when it comes down to it, this is my favorite springsteen album. i do think his 1975-1987 run of albums is pretty much perfect but nebraska is a masterpiece in a way that i find hard to express in words. there's a sense of sparseness and distance in this work (in part bc of how it was recorded) that i find so utterly compelling i can't even describe. "nebraska" - especially this 1984 live version - is a perfect song to me. perfect. i also like a lot of the stuff that went into inspiring this album (notably flannery o'connor) and well. where it fits into springsteen's narritivization of his own life (dude was in the dumps).

all killer, no filler (2001) - sum41. this pick is a little bit representative of the era of my life where i basically exclusively listened to pop punk but if songs of love and hate is an album that's perfectly drawn out, this is an album that's perfectly compressed. like, the title is correct. this album is fucking TIGHT. i used to listen to it at a job i hated to make the 30-min intervals go by. and it's got such classics...."fat lip"..."motivation..." of course, "in too deep." SO good.

what did you expect from the vaccines? (2011) - the vaccines. maybe this pick is a tiny bit cheesy but it is a perfect encapsulation of the era of alt rock it came from. which i love. i really like the vaccines, i think they're super fun and i did see them in concert finally and they totally lived up to that. "wetsuit" is again...one of my favorite songs of all time. "if you wanna" is a perpetual banger.

age of consent (1983) - new order. again, an album that deserves to be listened to whole, despite how good "age of consent" hits alone ever single time. sometimes i think i like another new order album more than this, but i don't. sumner's voice just out-of-tune ringing out over that sound, that new order sound, the bass, that post-punk club vibe. they're a band that don't sound like anyone else, and this is the album most indicative of that. wow, every time.

a few narrow misses

boxer (2007) - the national. i didn't get the national until one day i did. "slow show." my god. hello.

very (1993) - pet shop boys. it's too simple to say this is an album about gay love because it's so embedded in it's context but. this is an album with so much love. psb are brilliant.

the execution of all things (2002) - rilo kiley. jenny lewis CALL ME. also like. you know "a better son/daughter". there's more.

a thousand suns (2010) - linkin park. i used to listen to this at 6th grade cross-country practice. first band i ever got into on my own. idk.

I know I usually do a compilation list for link click musical but I have to share this one immediately. its the 23/03/2024 day performance. Wang Yifei, Zhu Hanbin, and Deng Xianling.

It starts off normal enough, "Pursuing Light" as usual, the high-5 between WYF and ZHB is super energetic as this pair tend to be, and WYF as always opens wide for a big hug. ZHB expert hug dodging is surprise though. Also, surprise glasses Hanbin appearance, cute.

Then we skip ahead to the sofa song and lmaoo DXL and WYF taking the sibling fight to the next level. That is a real, true to life, aggressive sibling fight. I would know, I have a brother. It got to the point of hair pulling and pillow wacking lol.

By the time we start the rock-paper-scissors song, you can see DXL complaining to Guo Zhenyen in the background about it, i think WYF accidentally scratched her hand. Anyway, handshake time and ZHB baited the last clap with a very cute "whoo~" and then he slaps WYF's ass hard enough for him to groan about it lmao.

Curtain call starts but the fight is not over yet! DXL still holds a grudge, so even while bowing and holding hands with WYF, they're still wrestling each other and when "Dive Back in Time" starts, DXL is off grabbing the bat so she can smack him some more lol, she even offered the bat to ZHB and he get a hit too.

Anyway, the point is, this is a very fun performance. I recommend you watch it, and watch for their expression too, it's fun to look at. aaand I will go back to writing my list.

MCD Heathers AU

I didn't ask for this, I had a passing teehee funny thought and then it stopped being funny and actually turned out to be a brain worm that took over all my neurons. I do not know what the fuck happened to make this AU but here we are.

Main thing to know before I come up here and elaborate in a later draft, this AU is imagining a production of Heathers featuring the cast and crew of mcd. It's an AU that's largely non magical other than the furry stuff, and it's distinctly the mcd characters and how I characterize them, not the MyStreet version of these characters. I think I've made my... thoughts on the matter of MyStreet characterization well known.

Anyways, the real actual main thing I meant to write was that this AU is also two productions. One is the main cast, and then there's the Understudy Cast! I might put that in a separate post because holy fuck this is already going to be a lot and I have to pull the entire cast of Heathers out of the pits of my memories.

Palestinian and Israeli. Both for having the misfortune to be born the wrong country or the wrong religion. That will always be wrong. Hamas is wrong. The Israeli government is wrong. Because killing civilians is always wrong. That's it. That's the takeaway. You don't get to say "Palestinians have a right to self-defense" as a justification for 07Oct. Self-defense does not extend to civilian targets. To non-combatants. To CHILDREN.

And to be quite clear, I will not accept "Israel has a right to self-defense" as a justification for the killing of Palestinian civilians but I'm largely not seeing that from Jewish leftists, including Israelis and including Zionists. I'm largely seeing them call for a ceasefire and for peace and condemn the Israeli government and its actions.

But I *am* seeing fellow western leftists, particularly non-Jews, defend Hamas and the 07Oct attacks in their desire to stand with Palestine. You have to stop doing that. Hamas are not the good guys, you can read their damn charter documents online. You can read analyses of them by experts - Hamas is a religious extremist group intent on imposing jihadist control over the entire region and eliminating all Jews. It's not something they've been secretive about. They routinely kidnap, torture, and kill PALESTINIAN peace activists who they learn have met with Israeli peace activists or in any way worked towards a 2 state solution. They use global aid donated to Gaza for themselves while letting their citizens suffer. Their most prominent leaders don't even live within Gaza, aren't even at severe risk. These are all things you can verify easily and readily just by doing some basic research anywhere that isn't Twitter, tumblr, or Al Jazerra.

So if you want to justify killing civilians? If you want to support a terrorist organization? If you are going to unilaterally condemn all Israelis for the crime of being citizens of a country whose government you disagree with? Please see yourself out. And when you do, please keep in mind that I am a nonzionist telling you to kindly consider availing yourself of the sea. I do not support Israel and I work with actual Palestinian liberation organizations when I can. I've been doing so for the better part of the past 5 years. I attend a synagogue that is actively involved in Palestinian liberation as well as the first nonzionist havurah in the US. I'm not exactly new to this.

But I am also a Jew. I do not support Israel, the government of the nation state, largely because I do not support the concept of nation states as a whole. I find the system inherently violent. But I *do* support, Israel, the people. I am a Jew by Choice. I have chosen to throw my lot in with Israel and her people. They are MY people. If you gleefully call for my people to be slaughtered, I want nothing to do with you.

Oh God the musical theater is breaking into my dreams there were literally songs happening, I BROKE INTO SONG TOWARDS THE END OF THE DREAM WHILE TRYING TO DEFEAT THE VILLAIN WHAT

#to be fair I don't think my brain came up with original melodies #because I can specifically remember one of them to the tune of let it grow from the lorax movie #also a lot of them including my song were directly copying the opening number to the Percy Jackson musical #also there might have been little hints of this Day Aria in there? #and there was just general music playing in the background during the entire dream #oh also did I mention the dream was about me in a grocery store trying to defeat an evil monster high doll that I brought to life because #she started being mean so I yelled at her and then she got mad and put a curse on the entire supermarket where if you ate anything you got #obsessed with it and people started fighting each other and also I could fly? #oh and also at one part some employee was doing a motivational speech (before getting possessed) and while I was walking over to him to see #I saw someone dressed as Scooby-Doo #like with face paint and stuff. don't know what that's about. #dreams #monster high #musicals
