An Avengers fundraising event in Las Vegas takes a left turn, and Captain America wakes up with a brand new spouse and no way to get a divorce. Coupled with Tony Stark's current obsession with reality dating shows, obviously nothing can go wrong, right?

Heroes are Easy, People are Hard (Rated: T, Words: 152K)

Summary: Shuri and Wanda cleared Bucky's triggers shortly after Killmonger's attempted coup, and he and Steve went on the run. But it turns out there's more to "fixing Bucky's head" than "getting Hydra out of it." When a group of rogue scientists manage to neutralize the serum and make Steve very sick--pre-serum "this is bad" kind of sick--and they're cut off from contact with Wakanda, Bucky knows only one person with resources to help. He calls Tony and surrenders on the condition that Tony tries to help Steve. From there, it's basically three variously messed-up guys’ trajectories from "This Is Fine", "Reasonably Speaking I Know It’s Fine", "I Will Be Fine With It" to actually being fine, guest-starring a far-better-adjusted teenage boy who climbs walls, a 1957 Ford Thunderbird, two women with a keen sense of the absurd, and Bruce, the Zen master of “it’s fine that it’s not fine.” Add in the fact that Bucky's been secretly in love with Steve since the thirties and things only get harder. Learning to be a person is the hardest thing Bucky Barnes will ever have to do--but he's got company along the way.

What Steve didn’t bank on was the gorgeous owner of his dog’s best puppy pal who happens to also be Becca’s older veteran brother, and he certainly didn’t bank on running into the man - quite literally, let alone falling completely in love with him.

Weekly Recap | November 14th- December 31st 2022.

Happy New Year everyone!

One thing I did not have on my bingo card for 2022 was loosing interest in Stucky in favour of a four month old Stranger Things ship of all things, but alas, here we are ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. I still love Stucky and I will always ship it, but unfortunately my brain has latched on to this shiny new ship and it just sparks more joy at the moment. So I guess what I'm saying is... I don't know how frequently I will be updating this blog in the future, if at all. I'm not deleting anything, the ask box will remain open, and I'll still be around! But I'm afraid this is the end of the Weekly Recaps as you've known them for the last... three to four years. I hope you've enjoyed them!

Wow, has this year flown by! I participated in my first-ever big bang, a minibang, a zine, wrote and posted several fics, and had the pleasure of immersing myself in all of these lovely words!

This is just a small sampling from my bookmarks because there's SO MUCH MORE that I have yet to read. Sometimes I wish I could teleport back to 2020 when I had the time and energy to read 100k+ a day xD I'll get to 'em eventually, though :)

Summary:

When Steve Rogers adopts a dog he rescued from a collapsed building he realizes that due to the nature of his job he needs a dog sitter. Enter Becca Barnes, owner and sole proprietor of Happy Hounds, a dog walking and sitting service that comes Sam-Wilson-approved.

What Steve didn’t bank on was the gorgeous owner of his dog’s best puppy pal who happens to also be Becca’s older veteran brother, and he certainly didn’t bank on running into the man - quite literally, let alone falling completely in love with him.

Excerpt:

“Maybe we can do this again? Over the weekend? Or early next week - any uh… Avengers calls notwithstanding, of course,” he says softly and Bucky is shocked to discover that he so wants to say yes… and that’s why he has to say exactly what’s on his mind.

There’s a part of him that had always remained hidden for the sake of ease during his military career, and it shouldn’t be an issue but Bucky knows that for some modern guys it is, let alone guys who were born in the Depression Era before the war, and certainly before LGBTQ rights were a thing. And sure, if Steve is uncomfortable with who Bucky is fundamentally that’s going to be way more disappointing than it really has any right to be, but Bucky would rather know now than later.

“I’m gay,” he blurts out, immediately feeling the colour rise in his cheeks because really, he’s not sure it would have been possible for him to be less smooth in that particular moment.

Steve, to his credit, blinks a couple of times but doesn’t look massively surprised.

📚 STUFF I READ 📚

😊 Rose Blue (Metalbvcky) - reread of this modern no-powers Stucky BDSM fic because I also read a lot of the shorter follow-on fics and wanted to refresh my memory on these characterizations

🥰 👂 The Murder of Mr. Wickham (Claudia Gray, author; Billie Fulford-Brown, narrator) - this is a mashup of Jane Austen and Agatha Christie, in that all of Austen's characters gather for a house party and then there's a murder - I feel like this is a book where either you're here for the premise and enjoy the ride or you should stay away entirely. For my part I had a blast reading this, just a fun, entertaining romp. I am fine with all the modernizing touches that literally everyone writing today does in historical fiction. I enjoyed seeing a possible version of (mostly) beloved characters after their HEAs, some as much as 20+ years on! Of course the Tilneys' daughter would be the one with enough gumption and curiosity to want to investigate a murder! Of course the Darcys have a son who's very neurodivergent! Loved the scene where Elizabeth has a little too much wine (after an extremely bad day) and channels a little too much of her dad! Shout out to the info we get about Mary Bennet's happily ever after; four for you, Mary! Can't believe this book made me remotely tolerate Fanny & Edmund! The murder was decently plotted and played 'the game' as it should be. Anyway, if this is your flavor of amusement, you'll know it.

😍 The Rules of Play (Ribbonsflying) - loved this Stucky historical BDSM AU - loved the power dynamics at play and has one of the hottest ice play scenes I've read

🥰 Wish Granted (ambut) - another really good variation on the 'recovering veteran Bucky finds solace and some healing with professional Dom Steve' - this had lots of delish praise kink which I eat like ice cream and also a more realistic depiction of Bucky dealing with his amputation/prosthetic which was nice to see

💖💖 +263K of shorter fic so shout out to these I really loved 💖💖

Say it louder for the people in the back (redhook) - MCU: shrinkyclinks AU, 14K - reread of THEE preeminent glory hole fic in this fandom - no matter how many times I read it, it's never not fantastic

This was honestly such a fun fic and the tone is brilliant - all the awkwardness of a date with someone you don’t really know portrayed perfectly… and the ending is perfect. Loved it!

But, when they meet in person there’s a little surprise for Bucky…. Anyway. This is amazingly cute, I had such a good time reading it. Bucky’s reactions felt really real, and I liked how considerate he and Steve are of each other!

This was… okay. It’s a little melancholy. The Winter Soldier has been captured and is going into Heat but refuses to acknowledge it. Step up Heat Assistant Steve Rogers, who’s there to help him through… even when things get really rough. I was totally captivated through this one and sunk straight into the world created. It’s no secret I love a good A/B/O fic, and honestly? For me this was right up there - I love how the author had considered how difficult a Heat might be to someone so traumatised. Heed the tags, but definitely worth a read - hurts so good.

So this follows on from Weapons Have No Sex (see above) and actually, things are starting to get just a little better for Bucky because he is starting to actually communicate. As he heads for another Heat, Steve is called in again to help with it - the first time he’s been a Heat Assistant since Bucky’s last one six months before - and there’s a lovely little twist giving a much deeper and richer back story. I’m absolutely loving this series and I can’t wait for the next installment!

Bring It On Home to Me by Mambo

Steve is an art teacher, and he’s clearly one of those teachers that his students adore. Anyway, they don’t seem to quite believe him when he says his boyfriend is rock star Bucky Barnes, but he is, and has been since Steve was a teenager. I loved this, it’s such a sweet story and really well written - it was recced to me in a Discord server after those Tommy Lee pictures of Sebastian were posted, and whilst this is considerably less gritty than I’m sure that biopic will be, it’s a lovely read and made a perfect lunchtime read, especially with the adorable epilogue chapter!

Anyway, Steve decides to go through an old fashioned courtship ritual which (along with his general clutziness) is completely charming and made me smile. Very cute and sweet <3
