Spiranthes ovalis var. erostellata

Selfing Lesser Ladies Tress

More tightly bound and less spiraled than S. ovalis var. ovalis.

S. ovalis var. erostellata is considered Ohio’s more common variety overall and is found abundantly through most of our open woodland ecosystems. S. ovalis var. erostellata is photographed here along restored open oak-hickory-kentucky coffee tree woodland that had honey suckle removed 5 years prior.  5 basal starting leaves in non flowering years is fairly common with both vars. and a series of 2 basal leaves with few cauline grass like leaves is common for both when blooming. True S. ovalis var. ovalis is insect pollinated by all means where the ladder is usually selfing to some regard, this specific S. ovalis var. erostellata population tends to be less cleistogamous and more chasmogamous, meaning showier with enclosed self pollination.

In the photo with my hand you can see that upper individual flowers are slightly open which potentially means crossing may one day occur on accident.

“Almost on crossing the Ohio line it seemed to me that people were more open and more outgoing. The waitress in a roadside stand said good morning before I had a chance to, discussed breakfast as though she liked the idea, spoke with enthusiasm about the weather, sometimes even offered some information about herself without my delving. Strangers talked freely to one another without caution. I had forgotten how rich and beautiful is the countryside - the deep topsoil, the wealth of great trees, the lake country of Michigan handsome as a well-made woman, and dressed and jeweled. It seemed to me that the earth was generous and outgoing here in the heartland, and perhaps the people took a cue from it.”

-John Steinbeck, "Travels with Charley: In Search of America"

The Solarium at Stan Hywet Hall was decorated with an Asian influence and contains one of the two fountains inside the house. The photo at the top came from their website and is not my own. It was hard to photograph with all the light pouring through the windows. If it were up to me, this room would be a conservatory filled with plants, but apparently it was used as a game room and a place for Mrs. Seiberling to write letters. Notice that the panelling is made to match the leading in the windows.

The 2,700-square-foot Music Room at Stan Hywet Hall is the largest in the house. The lady of the manor, Gertrude Penfield Seiberling, was an accomplished opera singer who performed at the White House in 1910 for President William Howard Taft. This room was used to showcase her talents and entertain guests. Many concerts, plays and charitable functions for the Akron community were held here during the 40 years the family lived at Stan Hywet. The room contains an Aeolian pipe organ and several other antique musical instruments. All the furnishings are original to the house.
