ok black friday official review SPOILERS under the cut. hopefully they fixed it so cuts work on mobile but if not uh. scroll fast i guess.

okay to start off? the songs? bangers. jeff blim really said every song on this soundtrack is gonna slap. i don’t think there’s a single song i disliked? wiggle is a standout, feast or famine rules, adore me rules, hell even the little song becky and tom sing when they’re looking for hannah is just. insanely good.

angela does a REALLY good job as lex, like she embodies this shitty disillusioned teen so well and she and kendall have great chemistry as sisters. she and rob also have really good chemistry, i love the bit where he goes “oh i guess i forgot cuz im just SO stupid” and she like, laughs and pushes him off, they have a lot of cute moments

(side note: i know with tgwdlm the theories as to why paul and emma never kissed was either lauren doesn’t like to kiss onstage or the lang bros don’t like making people kiss onstage, i think with black friday we can safely confirm the langs have no issue with making people kiss onstage LOL)

tbh all the acting is stellar as expected, i haven’t seen enough people talking abt how jaime kills it as sherman, so i’m gonna say that jaime kills it as sherman.

for something everyone’s been saying: lauren as linda monroe is SO good. i saw some people saying she was written confusingly, which i didn’t get at all? she seemed very straightforward to me. but yeah she was a delight every time she was on stage, it didn’t hurt that she got two of the best songs.

the running bit with gerald was good without ever seeming overdone, implant the way linda says “cinnabon” into my brain pls

i also really liked becky! i thought we got a lot of well written female characters this time around. i thought she balanced being a genuinely loving and empathetic character with also being the only character to have done a non-black-friday-related murder. her killing linda was very satisfying, i liked their dynamic

if becky becomes the new charlotte and i have to sit through 20 million “starkid unpopular opinions :)” videos talking abt how becky sucked and was annoying i’ll riot. charlotte and becky defense squad

i can’t just go through praising every character lol but also dylans return to starkid is worth the hype. it feels like he’s grown leagues since twisted

the plot was pretty good, like things made sense and all that. i was a little worried abt an ensemble cast but tbh it’s really not that bad, like everyone’s easy to keep track of and no like, character development feels rushed or anything

tbh the only things that bothered me were lex never finding out that ethan dies (tho i get that there just wasn’t time for it since she and hannah don’t reconnect till the end) and that i personally wasn’t crazy abt the president segments? i would’ve rather just like, had mcnamara undercover at the mall and he like, finds hannah or lex and that’s when he explains everything. maybe wiggly shows up when like, hannah falls asleep or something, we’ve already implied she has a connection to the black and white so just push that more.

(tho tbh then the whole wiggly’s connection to america -> made in america doesn’t happen, so maybe the presidential scenes are a necessary evil who knows. tbh i liked the entire black and white bit)

(also starkid finally includes a fuck america song that makes sense in the narrative hell yeah)

i think the langs are pushing a like, everyone dies at the end of every hatchetfield show kind of thing, which is why it’s really heavily implied everyone gets nuked at the end, but i think you could’ve gotten the same tone by just emphasizing that wiggly mania is ALL over america, and we don’t know if any other place survived, if wiggly found another person to come through, etc. like you don’t need ww3 on the horizon to make it bleak

idk just imo ending act 1 with characters we’ve never seen before seems like a weak choice

also i’ve never been so confused by an act 2 opener but as soon as i realized what was going on i was delighted

oh my other plot nitpick is why did becky have that syringe but i’m willing to handwave it as she came here straight from work and accidentally left it in her pocket

i liked the tgwdlm callbacks, some of them felt a little gratuitous but overall they were good. the SHRIEKS of joy when emma mentions hidgens were hysterical.

overall it was really good! i think tgwdlm is still my favorite just because the plot feels a little tighter but honestly black friday might surpass it on the strength of the soundtrack alone. its absolutely in my top 3.

OH ALSO THE CHOREOGRAPHY after my initial watch i put the digital ticket on a few times while i was drawing just to get the most out of the 72 hours i had it and i always stopped what i was doing to watch that one lauren-james-robert bit in deck the halls of northville high. you know the one.

anyways it was good 9/10

EDIT: also i forgot but i... think the langs forgot abt the lgbt character? rumor has it mcnamara had a monologue that got cut where he confirms he had a husband but it didn’t make it into the show so idk. maybe it’ll be in the youtube version

Mick Mulvaney's latest effort to whitewash Trump's failures is a joke

This exchange between Mulvaney and CNN's Jake Tapper is highly instructive: Tapper: Your own border experts in your own administration say that investing in those countries is working. For instance, in El Salvador, USAID money has gone to El Salvador. The homicide rate has gone down and migration from El Salvador has gone down as well. Isn't this also self-defeating? Taking away aid from those countries ultimately will make the migration crisis worse.

Nicaragua could do more. El Salvador could do more. And if we're going to give these countries hundreds of millions of dollars, we would like them to do more... We could prevent a lot of what's happening on the southern border by preventing people from moving into Mexico in the first place. And that's what... Tapper: Right, but that's [what] the USAID money does... it makes those countries more stable. This is not according to me. This is according to experts in your own administration. Loading Mulvaney: OK, career staffers, but let's talk about - let's talk about that for a second. If it's working so well, why are the people still coming? ... I think at least now people are starting to realisethat we were not exaggerating a couple months ago, when we had this nationwide debate about the wall. First, Mulvaney's sneer that only "career staffers" are claiming aid helps stabilisethose countries is absurdly dismissive. After all, this includes Trump's own Customs and Border Protection commissioner, Kevin McAleenan, who has said this repeatedly. In December, McAleenan told ABC News that a then-new State Department plan to increase aid to those countries is a "tremendous step forward", because investments in improving both the security and economic conditions there would improve migrants' "opportunities to stay at home". More recently, in March, McAleenan told reporters: "We need to continue to support the governments in Central America to improve economic opportunities to address poverty and hunger and to improve governance and security." In saying these things, Trump's own border chief is stating what is now widely understood: These migration surges are largely driven by terrible civil conditions at home. Thus, what is called for above all is a regional strategy designed to discourage them in the first place. People who have worked on this problem in multiple administrations agree with this.

"Cutting off resources that are allowing these countries to make progress - to say that this is cutting off our nose to spite our face doesn't even begin to cover it. More people are likely to do the desperate thing, which is migrate." Mulvaney's responses in this regard are startlingly weak. He claims the cutoff is designed to get countries to do more to keep people from migrating. But as one former US ambassador to Honduras notes, the use of this aid as leverage is misguided, since much doesn't go directly to governments but rather is administered by nonprofit groups via US programs. And those governments can't block people from migrating. But that aside, Mulvaney's claim still skirts the core issue, which is that cutting off aid will set back to an untold degree efforts to discourage migrations by addressing their causes. Mulvaney questions that very premise, by asking why aid isn't reducing these surges. But the State Department only just announced its latest aid package a few months ago. Loading And if anything, Mulvaney's answer only underscores the fact that the conditions causing these migrations are dire indeed - which argues for increased efforts to address them. That's precisely why Trump's own border chief is saying we need to keep those efforts going, and build on them. At bottom, Mulvaney's defence of Trump's latest rage-policy points to a much deeper failure at the core of Trump's whole immigration worldview: the idea that migration surges can only be the result of efforts by migrants and/or their home countries to rip the US off and take advantage of the country. Atlantic writer Adam Serwer likes to say that the "cruelty" of Trump's policies "is the point". That's true, but so is the worldview animating that cruelty. This double-sided depiction of what's driving these migrations is absolutely foundational to Trumpism. In his 2015 announcement speech, Trump didn't merely call Mexican immigrants rapists; he also accused Mexico of sending them our way. Nothing has changed: Trump is now thrilling rally crowds by mocking asylum seekers. But note why he's mocking them: for supposedly hyping the conditions in their home countries - again, to scam Americans. This justifies both the underlying bigotry and Trumpian solutions that are cruelly punitive and defensive: He will discourage migrations by making migrants as miserable as possible (family separations), and by walling them out. He will compel other countries ("s---hole countries" that are foisting their criminal outcasts onto us) to somehow detain their migrants by withholding aid from them. But none of Trump's prescriptions are working. The family separations didn't cause a slowdown in migration, because the terrible conditions at home are a primary impetus. Nor will Trump's wall make a difference. Geographical realities dictate that more barriers will not stop migrants from setting foot on US soil, and besides, they are largely turning themselves in to apply for asylum in any case. Loading In this context, it's absurd for Mulvaney to be pointing to the latest migrations as vindication for claims of a national emergency to build the wall. Precisely the opposite is true: The migrations underscore the utter failure of the very worldview that imagines this to be a "solution". Will Bunch argues provocatively in Philadelphia's Inquirer that Trump might not even mind failing here: More chaos at the border, leading to more cruel imagery (such as migrants penned under an El Paso bridge) and ever more cruel responses, will galvanisethe base into 2020. It's a measure of how low we've sunk that this cannot be dismissed out of hand: Remember, Trump reportedly claimed of family separations that "my people love it". But all the cruelty and failure caused a massive backlash in 2018, helping cost Republicans the House. And it looks as if the border is going to get worse before it gets better - a lot worse, now that Trump appears determined to make it so. Greg Sargent is a Washington Post columnist. The Most Cynical Campaign In History

With the Democratic convention history and the Republican one lurching forward, excitement among voters ranges from lukewarm to semi-lukewarm. Political cynicism scrapes at the nation like a sleeping man being shaved by a drunk barber.

Both conventions make one thing clear as a slug trail: the Democratic candidate is Not Trump. Just vote for the one named “Trump” or the one named “Not Trump.” It’s easy. In fact 60 percent of Biden voters say their support is more against Trump than for Joe. It’s easy to imagine most of the rest will vote Biden confused after the convention, thinking Obama is running again.

Meanwhile Trump is Trump is Trump. Seriously, if any one is not sure what they think of the guy by now they need to be exposed to 24 hours of Twitter with their eyes pegged open like the dude in A Clockwork Orange. If you liked the last four years, here comes more of it.

It gets more complicated on the other side. See, the Not Trump candidate is an old white man, but don’t pay attention to age, gender, or race even though he’s the same as Trump. The Democratic vice presidential candidate is younger, blacker, and less male so in her case age, gender, and race are very important. Kamala Harris exists as a lure to get a few depressed prog voters to bite on Ol’ Man Not Trump. That primary voters rejected her and five other decent women candidates illustrates the cynicism here.

For four years Trump delivered daily steaming piles of exactly what he said he would. You got what you voted for, no better no worse, like the all-you-can-eat buffet that’s mostly carbs. The base figured out early most of it was just rhetoric to inflame the libs, while the liberals took the bait every time.

Democrats on the other hand chummed the water with talk about progressive issues like free healthcare, free college, college loan forgiveness, you know, the Bernie stuff. Despite Bernie coming in second place twice in two primary campaigns his ideas are going to have as much influence on Biden as they are on Trump. Same for all the others hyped along the way to keep everyone’s attention, Beto, Pete, Stacey Adams, AOC, and Warren. That the Democrats featured John “I Lost the Primary, Too” Kasich, the abandoned Colin “Liar” Powell, John “Sell Out” Kerry, and the ghostly Widow McCain at the convention made it clear how little the party really cares about the POC and young people it purported to groom for the last years. They ran out of old Democrats to feature and had to resort to bringing in old Republicans. Viewers might have expected the whole thing to shift into an infomercial for reverse mortgages at some point featuring hologrammed spokesman John McCain himself. Nonetheless, you better vote Not Trump even knowing you’re being played for the sucker.

The Republicans on the other hand crafted raised middle finger performance art from their speakers. You got BLM? We got the ultimate angry white people, Patricia and Mark McCloskey, who aimed guns at Black Lives Matter protesters in St. Louis.

As for election strategy, both campaigns seem to center on… the post office. Dems need you to believe the greatest election conspiracy in the history of democracy is unfolding inside the place. Yes, that post office, where grandpa buys those things he calls stamps. That place will likely end democracy because this election will have so many mail-in ballots and Democrats believe all those mail-in ballots will be for them and each requires its own blue corner mailbox. So Trump wins because Republicans will vote by magic laser beam or something. Diabolical plans which can be thwarted simply by voting early, or in person, are kinda weak. Kinda like Hillary in her convention speech cynically telling people winning the Electoral College was some kind of sneaky trick on Trump’s part.

What neither side will be talking about is President Bone Spurs. Yep, his pug faced rich daddy got a doctor to pretend little Donny had bone spurs and so was exempt from dying in Vietnam. Well, fuggedaboutit.

See when Uncle Joey was younger he too did not go to Vietnam. Joey got five student draft deferments during the Vietnam War, same as Trump. And in 1968, when his Joe’s student status was wrapping up, he was medically reclassified as “not available” due to asthma. Asthma can be nasty stuff or it can be a bone spur. Google “Anita Hill.” Same for Tara Reade, who has been telling people since the 1990‘s Biden stuck his fingers in her private place unwanted, which is the same as Trump “grabbing them by the pussy.” This will all get a little harder to pretend away when CNN spends the autumn replaying Kamala being fierce and nasty pounding #BelieveWomen into Americans’ skulls and tearing into Brett Kavanaugh for being a high school kid but Dems pulled it off with Bill Clinton and can do it again.

Corruption used to be a safe one to use against Trump. Unfortunately, after leaving the Obama White House, Joe and his wife made more than $15 million, mostly via sweetheart book deals. In fact, they made nearly twice as much in 2017 as they did in the previous 19 years combined. The University of Pennsylvania gave Joe $775,000 to teach, and then was nice enough to offer him indefinite leave of absence from actually teaching. And sure, Biden charges the Secret Service $2,200 a month rent for a cottage on his property so they can protect him, which sounds like Trump. And there’s all that business with Joe and his son in Ukraine, and Joe and his son in China. Best to talk about Beau, the dead soldier son.

And even though it was individual state governors, mostly Democrats, who overreacted and closed your schools, threw you out of work, closed the bars, restaurants, bowling alleys, stores, beaches, gyms, and churches, and banned football, graduations, funerals, last visits with terminally ill loved ones, fathers at their child’s birth, and interstate travel while allowing BLM protests, the Dems need everyone to blame Trump.

In contrast to the shoulder shrug stance of yeah, it’s me, suck on it, presented by Trump, the 2020 Democratic vision is the most cynical of any in American history. It says “we have no vision” but you all need to square up and vote for a mediocre candidate with an AI-chosen running mate anyway. No real details of betterment through policy, no hope and change, no American dream, but a threat. As Michelle Obama said at the convention “If you think things cannot possibly get worse, trust me, they can.” Her hubby echoed the dark theme the next evening, claiming democracy itself is imperiled. In other words, vote for us or else. Strange Trump is ending democracy but we can somehow just vote no on that and it’s over. Whatever.

We’re about to really find out whether anyone would be better than Trump. The Dems dangled Bernie and Warren then delivered a candidate from when Luke married Laura in the same voice a waitress uses to say, “Um, sorry, out of Coke. Diet Mr. Pibb OK?” Joe Biden is so old he’s lost the race for president twice already and comes off like grandpa putting himself out there for one last fling after Grandma Obama passed away. But think how hard this all was; the Democrats only had four years and couldn’t even get rid of Hillary in that time.

A couple of weeks ago I got pulled over for an outdated sticker. When I handed the officer my insurance, it was last years paper (I cleaned out my purse the week before, I obviously took the wrong paper out). Dental Insurance Company Denying Authorization for Covered Plan Services.?

Anthem Blue Cross Dental Net I was referred to an oral surgeon by my primary care dentist since I have to have 6 teeth and 2 residual root tips extracted in advance of getting a full upper denture. All the extractions including the root tips have to be done during one visit, which necessitates the use of IV sedation. My general dentist cannot perform any of this work. Anthem Blue Cross Dental Net denied the original pre-authorization request, and subsequent appeal stating that my general dentist can perform the services being referred. Which is absolutely not the case. I even spoke with a customer service rep who indicated that the extraction of residual root tips is definitely a referable service and it clearly states that in their Dental Net Provider Contract. She has no explanation for why the appeal was denied. My primary care dentist has even provided Anthem Blue Cross Dental Net with his specific reasons for referring this work to an oral surgeon and I still can't get anyone at Anthem Blue Cross to re-evaluate the original denial and the appeal and authorize the necessary work. I have filed a complaint with the California Department of Insurance, although I don't hold out much hope for any results from that effort. HELP... what are my options? Who can I contact? Thanks""

I would say it is in good or fair condition, the leather seats are cracking badly and it has a few scrathes, etc. I'm just wandering if it is in my best interest to repair this car or for it to be totaled out. Question about buying a car without insurance?

Hey everyone, I need answers without criticism as Im new to this and know as much as you did when you bought your first car. I live in Texas and I have my learners permit but will get my license in around a month or so. We found a great deal on a car I love, and my parents want to buy it. However, as I said, I dont have my license yet, therfore, I dont have insurance. I was wondering, if my parents want to buy the car and keep it at home in the garage until i get my license and can get insurance, how would it work from the moment I buy the car until I drive it home. My parents have full-cover insurance with State Farm in both their cars, each pays their own insurance, would their insurance cover a second (technically third) car? What would be the step to take? How can I drive the car in peace without being nervous about getting pulled over or something? Please no rude answers, im trying to do things right, thus im here asking, Thanks""

John McCain is backing a digital transparency bill that probably would've gotten his 2008 campaign in trouble

A new bill sponsored by Sen. John McCain promises to bring full transparency to digital political ads. But that won't be easy, argues veteran journalist Kate Kaye.

Kaye, author of the 2009 book, “Campaign ‘08: A Turning Point for Digital Media," says that McCain's 2008 campaign went out of its way to disclose as little as possible about its web ads.

By nature, political ads are messy and often designed to stoke fears.

Honest Ads aren’t what anybody expects in politics, but that’s what a new bipartisan bill by the same name promises by requiring digital platforms to provide detailed public information about political advertising.

In the midst of ongoing investigations into ad-supported Russian sabotage during the 2016 election, Democrats Mark Warner of Virginia and Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota, along with Republican John McCain, co-sponsored the Honest Ads Act, which would require Facebook, Google and lesser-known digital media firms and ad platforms to make digital display ad creative, video ads, sponsored content, and search ads public, providing details about how the messages were targeted and how much they cost.

If the Honest Ads Act is all it’s cracked up to be, anyone who wants insight into how political candidates use paid digital media to disseminate messages would have a comprehensive repository of campaign ad information. The reporter in me loves this.

The idea seems to be that if political advertisers and their digital messaging tactics are exposed, they’ll be honest. Or maybe the idea is that by reporting all this information, digital media entities will be held more accountable for all the surreptitious activity they allow to take place on their watch.

But talk about casting a wide net: in addition to ads made by or on behalf of a candidate, the legislation calls for digital ad sellers to report any ads related to “a national legislative issue of public importance.” It also calls on the Federal Election Commission overseeing this whole process to figure out how to establish accountability for “political advertisements distributed online for free” -- or in digital industry parlance, organic messages.

Apparently, this is how the law would prevent what happened in 2016, by sweeping up anything related to elections or political issues that anybody promotes in ad form, even meddlers posing as everyday Americans creating fake non-political user accounts to disseminate salacious news items.

It’s all a bit ironic to me, because in my experience over the years trying to piece together what political campaigns were doing online, Senator McCain’s campaigns and others haven’t been exactly forthcoming when it came to divulging information about their digital advertising.

McCain’s Own Transparency Challenges

Let me explain. Back in 2008, online political advertising was finally getting recognized as a legitimate factor in elections. It was Barack Obama’s campaign that generated most of the media hype around the use of digital platforms, but his GOP rival John McCain was also working with experienced digital ad consultants.

As a reporter who had covered digital political advertising since its nascence in 2002, there were, as is still the case, no rules for digital political ads like the ones requiring television stations to report political TV ads. FEC reports were among my primary sources for signals about what political campaigns did online and where they spent.

Obama’s 2008 campaign reported details of spending with specific ad networks and digital media firms to the FEC, but in contrast, the McCain campaign practiced near-opacity, revealing as little as possible about where its online ad dollars went. In fact, its reports to the agency were so cryptic, the campaign only reported online ad-related spending in bulk expenditures categorized discreetly as “media” with a company listed only as “CD INC.” Without knowing through reporting and sourcing that CD INC was indeed Republican digital consultancy Connell Donatelli, I’d have had zero insight into what the campaign was spending online.

Fomenting Fear Is Part of the Political Playbook

The Russian fake news farms that inspired the Honest Ads Act pushed out a lot of phony news and commentary to foment a variety of ideas intended to influence people to support President Trump, such as anti-immigrant sentiment.

But even upstanding campaigners such as Senator McCain have been associated with distributing arguably unsavory digital messages. During the 2008 election, I reported that McCain’s campaign used ad networks to splatter the web with anti-Obama ads, including messages targeting Jewish voters that pictured Obama alongside then-Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, asking, “Is It OK to Meet Unconditionally with Anti-American Foreign Leaders?”

John McCain 2008Though the ads made note in small print that they were paid for by the McCain campaign (the new bill could require more prominent disclosure), they were clearly not about McCain. Rather, they were intended to stir concern among a select group of voters about Obama’s trustworthiness in relation to Iran -- and by extension Israel. Stirring uncertainty and fear among voters is one of the oldest tactics in the political campaign playbook. There’s a reason those pesky Russian ad meddlers employed a similar approach in their messaging on Facebook and other sites.

Let’s be clear – I’m not trying to “out” McCain. His campaign’s approach to FEC reporting and ad messaging was not much different from that of many political campaigns I’ve observed over the years. And remember, shady scaremongering has been a specialty of political direct mail for decades.

Logistical Nightmare?

Much like political advertising, the digital ad ecosystem as a whole has been tainted, and nefarious entities gaming ad platforms are more than happy to exploit commercial advertisers as much as they are political ones. Brand marketers, Procter and Gamble being their poster boy, have been calling for more transparency in the industry related to the scourge of ad fraud for well over a year now. You’ve gotta wonder if some brand advertisers are thinking, hey, Senators, can we get some rules over here, too?

Political advertisers use the very same digital media and ad platforms used by brand advertisers, and I’d expect some pushback on the Honest Ads proposals from media sellers and their lobbyists. In fact, the New York Times reported last week that Facebook, Google and other tech firms have hired lobbyists specifically to influence regulations resulting from the fallout of the Russian ad infiltration.

While many won’t want to be seen as an impediment to preventing another ad-driven fake news operation, logistics will be a challenge. Especially when it comes to presidential and statewide campaigns, digital ad buys are complex. Campaigns might develop hundreds, even thousands of variations of ad creative delivered by programmatic ad systems based on targeting criteria informed by data models and voter scores that might change day-to-day or even hour-to-hour. Both Hillary Clinton’s and President Donald Trump’s 2016 campaigns ran digital ad campaigns on Facebook and via lots of other digital platforms this way.

Information about television advertising by political campaigns is available as buys are made, and the proposed law would require digital platforms to report as frequently as possible, too. Implementation is one thing. Then there’s the exposure. Will political advertisers be comfortable having details about targeting niche voter groups with controversial messages publicly revealed? Will they be comfortable having anything that could reveal intricacies about their persuasion or get-out-the-vote strategies revealed?

Looking on the bright side, maybe – and this is a weak maybe -- it could inspire political campaigns to clean up their own acts. But I’m not holding my breath.

So yes we are certainly at fault to some extent and obviously you then, when you’re caught you’ve got to keep the rhetoric up and keep throwing more and more accusations and so the State Department has done that.

I know that before the illegal coup Obama, Bush everybody was trying to be friends with the Russians rightly so, cold war had ended long ago, the Russians wanted to be friends with America. We didn’t need NATO anymore. Who needed the Cold War etc. all the money we were spending on some of these arms manufactures and soldiers so until the illegal coup took place we were all trying to be great friends you remember George Bush said I looked him in the eye and he’s a man I can admire and work with etc.

So now of course the Democrats especially since they lost the election are trying to blame it on the Russians. It’s unfathomable to me how the Russians could have determined the outcome of the elections. Maybe they planted a story a two but so what? It’s inconceivable to me that the Russians could influence much less determine the election.

I think if we start having investigations of the illegal voting I’m afraid we’re going to find more for the Democrats than for the Republicans places big cities in America won’t name names but so far the few investigations that have taken place we find that the voting irregularities are in big cities which are Democratic strongholds.

On the Greater Depression…

In 2008 Bear Stearns disappeared, Bear Stearns had been around over 90 years. Lehman Brothers disappeared. Lehman Brothers had been around over 150 years. A long, long time, a long glorious history they’ve been through wars, depression, civil war they’ve been through everything and yet they disappear.

So the next time around it’s going to be worse than anything we’ve seen and a lot of institutions, people, companies even countries, certainly governments and maybe even countries are going to disappear. I hope you get very worried.

when you start having bear markets as you I’m sure well know one bad thing happens and another bad thing happens and these things snowball just like in bull markets good news comes out then more good news comes out the next thing you know you’re five or six or seven years into a bull market.

Well bear markets do the same thing and so we have a lot of bad news on the horizon. I haven’t even gotten to war. I haven’t even gotten to trade war or anything like that but you know things do go wrong.

On Trump and the possibility of trade wars…and real wars

Mr. Trump has also said he’s going to have trade war with China, Mexico, Japan, Korea a few other people that he has named. He swore that on his first day in office he would impose 45% tariffs against China. He’s been there three weeks, two or three weeks and he hasn’t done it yet but he still got it in his head I’m sure or maybe he’s just another politician like all the rest of them. He says one thing and he doesn’t mean it at all but he does have at least three people in high levels in his group who are very, very keen to have trade wars with China and other people.

If he does that Eric, it’s all over. I mean history is very clear that trade wars always lead to problems, often to disaster, sometimes even to real war, a shooting war. So I don’t know, I’m not sure Mr. Trump knows. He said so many things and many of the things are contradictory. Now if he’s not going to have trade wars with various people then chances are for a while happy days are here…

[The dollar is] going to go too high, may turn into a bubble, at which point I hope I’m smart enough to sell it because at some point the market forces are going to cause the dollar to come back down because people are going to realize, oh my gosh, this is causing a lot of turmoil, economic problems in the world and it’s damaging the American economy. At that point the smart guys will get out. I hope I’m one of them.

On governments continued war against cash…

Governments are always looking out for themselves first and it’s the same old thing you know Eric this has been going on for hundreds of years. The Indians recently did the same thing they withdrew 86% percent of the currency in circulation and they have now made it illegal to spend more than, I think it’s about $4000 in any cash transaction. In France you cannot use more than, I think it’s a €1000.

Many countries are already doing this. Some states in the U.S. you cannot make cash transactions above a certain amount. Governments love it. Then they can control you. If you want to go and buy a cup of coffee they know how many you drink, where you buy them etc. if they can all put it into electronic formats and they will the world is all going electronic. My children will probably never go to a bank when they’re adults, maybe never go to a post office maybe even never to a doctor or rarely to a doctor when they’re adults.

So the Internet and the computers changing everything that we know, money can certainly be easily converted to computers not today because there are still, some people who don’t have computers and the system is not ready it but it can be done and when it’s done the governments are going to be very, very happy they going to say they’re doing it for our own good Eric, this is not them, this is for our good. That they’re doing this, but it’s coming and it’s going to be a whole different world in which we live. Probably we are not going to have as many freedoms as we have now even though we are already losing our freedoms at a significant pace.

On the demise of freedom…

…history shows that people always would like a little more safety and a willing to “give up some things for more safety and security.” Benjamin Franklin said well anybody who would give up some freedoms for security is going to wind up with neither security nor freedom and they deserve to lose both and of course that’s the way it is.

I’m not the first to realize that people who are rising to become dictators start taking away freedoms first in Germany they took away the guns, they wouldn’t let people have guns in Germany and lots of places have done that or things like that.

In America now you and I probably remember when we were kids, you had to have a search warrant, now they can just break your door down if they have what they consider enough good reasons, they don’t even have to go to the court and get a search warrant anymore.

So it’s already happening and if you said to somebody that you know they could break your door down they say they’re not going to break my door down I’m not a terrorist or a drug dealer, well that’s how it all starts people say it’s OK but then the next thing you know they’re breaking your door down too.

So it’s already happening do I like it? No I don’t like it but I’m not the first– what was his name Goebbels the German who said if you say something to people enough times they believe it no matter how absurd it is and you and I have certainly seen it in the news in America you say something enough times people believe it and it becomes politically correct and then you can’t even say something that’s not politically correct in America any more.

Cuba, Getting in and then Enjoying Yourself.

In 2016, President Obama lifted restrictions on travel to Cuba. Up until this time, American citizens could travel to Cuba with special permission from the state department; one had to go with a tour group for a specific reason listed by the government. With his historic move, Obama made is so we as citizens can travel to Cuba much easier. While you still cannot travel for "tourism", there are a list of 12 reasons for travel. My wife and I chose the Education and we planned our itinerary accordingly, which included museum visits as well as meeting with a film photographer teacher, and staying at a Cuban house for our stay.

Many people have asked me about how we went about getting "permission" to go, and the answer is simple; We bought plane tickets. We chose to fly Jetblue, so this is specifically our experience with them, however, I do not think that other airlines are going to be different, my friends flew Spirit, and they had a similar experience, albeit worse, but that is because Spirit is awful.

When you buy plane tickets, the airline will ask you which of the 12 reasons your trip to Cuba falls under, and then they will send you an email affidavit, which you electronically fill out and return. When we arrived at Fort Lauderdale Airport, we had to get in line to purchase our Cuban visa, which, through Jetblue, cost us $50.00 (my friends said Spirit charged them $100 and only accepted cash.) We got our Cuban visa and our tickets were stamped to indicate the same. Other friends who went actually went to the Cuban Embassy in DC and got their visa that way, which is also a choice, but, with Jetblue making it so easy, we avoided that.

When you arrive in Cuba, the immigration and customs is just like any other country, they stamp your passport, and let you in. Returning to the US was the same, and we had the nicest customs agent we have ever encountered. He did not ask us a single thing about where we had been. The whole process was simple and required less hassle than our visa for Brazil or China. We decided to go before the inauguration, in case that cheeto-idiot decided to make travel more difficult.

With all that out of the way, it is time to discuss being in Havana. Make sure you have cash, as you will not be able to use credit cards or ATM cards while in Cuba (this goes for USA, other countries you can use your cards, I think) and the exchange rate is 1:1 for the Cuban Convertable Note, the CUC. There is also another currency, though we never got any of it. We exchanged money at the airport; there were two upstairs and one downstairs.

At the airpot we picked up a taxi for 30 CUC to China Town area, which is where we were staying. Our taxi had put a screen over his rearview, ok Cuba, I like your style!

The ride to airport took around 30 minutes and took us directly to our house. Unfortunately, our house had a problem and we could not stay. In what was a good introduction, the owner had found us a better house at the same rate (30cuc a night) closer to downtown to stay in, which he walked us to. The place to stay was found by my wife on TripAdvisor forum, which she uses a lot as a resource for finding places to stay.

Our first night in Havana we had no plans, only walking around a little bit and then turning in early, as we had gotten in later in the day. I wish I had the information for our new place, as it was wonderful and the family who owned the house were great, but I was unable to get it from them; language barrier.

The first full day we were there, to fulfill our "requirements" of visit, we headed over to the Plaza De Revolution to educate ourselves on the revolution that saw Fidel take power. The walk was about 45 minutes or so from our house and was pretty straight. We saw a lot of stuff on the walk including tons of nice people. The streets of Havana are very narrow with houses on each side.

At the center of the plaza is the Jose Marti Memorial which has a memorial at the base. The museum is pretty nice, though it is not air conditioned. The cost to get into the memorial and the museum is about 5 bucks, so not bad. If one is so inclined, there are taxis as well as pristine convertibles to take you around the city, we did not do this, though it is very popular.

After the plaza, we took a long meandering route towards Old Havana and along the waterfront. There were men fishing over the waterfront, which was scenic. The car tours take you along this route, so convertibles pass by frequently.

We ended up strolling all the way to Plaza de Armas, which is where we saw the most tourists, as this was close to where the cruise ships come into port and everyone gets off. There were shops and stalls, and I bought an expensive Coke, 4 bucks! This to me felt like the most "fake" part of Havana. When one thinks of Cuba, they think of old cars, old buildings, here there were no old cars, just 78 million tourists and things to be sold to tourists. I did enjoy the open air market in the park, people selling posters and shirts, records and books, that was really cool.

In this area was also this old pharmacy that is still in business. I was only able to take the one above photo as my film speed was slow and inside it was not that bright.

The rest of the day was walking the city streets and shooting photos, dinner, then back to our place. The next day was more of the same, with the addition of meeting some friends of friends from Miami. We ended up walking around, shooting photos, and getting dinner. After dinner we wandered about and sat in a square, in some chairs, just talking for about 4 hours. A stray dog hopped in my lap and fell asleep as I pet her, it was a wonderful experience. I also met a photography teacher, Ossain. He came to our house to just hang out. He was a great guy.

The Food

A lot of people always ask about the food when we travel places, and the answer we always give is "Eh". Neither of us is huge foodies (my wife is to a point, but finding vegan options is not always easy) we usually just buy food at a market and make meals at our hostel, hotel, or home. In this case, we ate at the same place twice, which was a Chinese restaurant. To give you an idea of how this place was, they had fries on the menu but had no fries, they had a full menu, only three of which were Chinese. The rest of the menu was a normal menu, the first night I got shrimp, which was pretty good, the second night I got pizza.

I did get some absolutely delicious ice-cream on the street twice, do not pass up street ice-cream.

The Cars

When people think of Cuba, they think of the cars. Everyone has heard it, I was ready to see them, I am not sure I was ready to see as many as I saw. The historic cars were everywhere, literally everywhere. If I wanted a photo with a specific color car, I had to wait a few minutes at most for that color car to come by. If I wanted to take a photo of a building on a side street with a car in front of it, I had to wait a few minutes. The amount of old cars here is staggering, as well as awesome.

Instax

My wife and I both brought our instax cameras, and unbeknownst to each other, we had both planned on taking photos of people and them giving them to whomever we photographed. Between the two of us we gave away about 80 photos to people on the street. As neither of use really shoot people, we weren't sure how people would react to this, but let me say, people absolutely loved it. My wife to a photo at the bar in the photo below, and after a few minutes, everyone in the bar came out, wanted their own photos, wanted photos with each other, it was absolutely amazing.

The above kids were playing soccer in the street, and I took a photo of the kid in jeans. I handed it to him when it was done developing, and when I looked back, all the kids were so hyped. The kid in the blue shorts took the photo and ran into the house to show everyone, and then my wife took the remainder of her shots of the kids. I was out at this point.

The people of Cuba were nothing short of wonderful. Everyone was friendly and helpful if need be. Not once while I was here, both in the day and the evening, did I feel unsafe or uncomfortable. I would, without hesitation, visit Cuba again, and would like to go across the island more.

The return journey to the airport was a trip, we had to catch a taxi, and some random guy on the street got one for us, then got in with us. We had to get gas, which we did at some random house out of a milk jug, and we were on our way. We took a different route to airport, which I think was to avoid paying a fee to drop us off. It was the perfect way to close out our short but wonderful trip to an island that seem shrouded in misconceptions. Go to Cuba, enjoy Cuba, we did.

The New Nostalgia of Barack Obama

November 9, 2016 I woke up with that kind of dazed pain one feels when you've slept on something outrageous, only to awaken and discover that it wasn't a dream, but indeed reality. It was accompanied by that sort of disoriented dread associated with realizing a tragedy did in fact occur, while still half asleep.

At this point, I want to refrain from referring to Trump's victory as a tragedy. But what I will say is that I, along with many Americans, was absolutely stunned by the results of the election, and still to this day am rather bewildered by it. I could easily engage in a full on rant regarding the election, my take on it, the experience of watching like every state turn red, the real time phone conversations, frantic text messages and all the sort. But today, that's actually not the focus of what I want to share here. This is by no means a Trump bashing piece, and in no way to be viewed in that context. At this time he has done nothing to warrant that, at least not in a presidential capacity, and I'm a fair person.

So anyway, something else amazing happened on that November 9th morning. After I wiped the crust out and re-checked my phone, just for confirmation I suppose, I laid back and focused my eyes on the ceiling. I'm sure I was simply trying to process what happened and to determine how I felt about it. But as would anyone, my thoughts began to bounce from here to there, in and out. And eventually they landed on Barack Obama. And the more deeply I reflected, my eyes became teary. I began remembering this same moment, 8 years prior. It was the first time I had reflected on his elections in years, and it was absolutely delightful.

At 21 years old, this was the first election I could actually partake in. And what an election it was. I can recall the rapture of watching a youngish, attractive Black lawyer turned community activist turned senator rise in the ranks to the point he might be a real contender for the highest office in the land. The joy of watching this outlandishly well spoken almost regal man and his superhero of a wife climb and ascend to higher and higher heights each week. The satisfaction of knowing that not only was our guy here now, but he was in every way qualified to be there. Harvard Law, political experience, pointed intelligence and scandal free. Oh, the awe of it all. I remember the summer of 2008, the posters on bus stops, the t-shirts bearing his likeness in all the corner stores and shops, the campaigners knocking on doors and the voter registration drives. The media coverage, the family discussions and just the utter hype of it all. The entire planet was alight with Obama Fever, and for me, it was complete exhilaration. So many youth like myself, of all ethnicities, for the first time ever, became not only interested but actively engaged in the political process. That initial interest is likely still felt today. Make no mistake, I find every presidential election be entertaining and even exciting. But never was there ever an election like this.

I remember walking out of some center after casting my absentee ballot with my checkmark next to Sen. Barack Obama (D), feeling nothing less than pride at the opportunity to do what my predecessors could not. What even my grandfather could not. I couldn't help but to feel convinced that what I had just done, although but a single vote, was a piece of history that was not only an honor but a gift that was mine to keep.

November 4, 2008, I was in the hospital after having just given birth to my first child, which for me only heightened the specialness of it all. The whole world was glued to the television, and so was I, albeit a little doped up, but no worse for the wear. Hours spent watching pundits and anchors offering their calculations and commentary regarding the night's outcome. Millions of posts proclaiming hope for the impending change inspired by our favorite candidate from Hawaii. The breathless coverage via radio and news outlets. Watching. Waiting. Texting. Calling. More waiting. One state, two states, red states, blue states? Fifteen blue states? And another blue state. Some red ones. Pennsylvania still too close to call. Ohio confirmed. Oh, there goes PA. A slew of more blue states. Georgia for McCain. 11 PM EST, west coast polls close. Now we're biting our nails, because regardless of the mania of the past 21 months, we are all still wondering, "Can he really pull this off? Are we as a nation actually ready to do this?" And then.

"Breaking News: Barack Obama will be the 44th President of the United States of America".

Oh. My. God.

To express the magnitude, the absolutely all-encompassing fervor of this moment, with mere words alone, is impossible. There isn't a word that exists in the English language to really convey the emotion. Oh, do you remember? For the colors, the visions, the pain and joy, just the complete experience of that instant, at 11 PM EST, there are no words. To use average words like shock and awe simply do not do the moment justice. Flabbergasted? Dumbfounded? Astonished? Sure. But times 10.

As the screens then cut to Grant Park, Harlem, DC, Kenya, Indonesia, Britain, amazed. To Japan, to people weeping and jumping around like they caught Obama Fire on their coattails in South Africa, a celebratory party in France? Whatever it was I was feeling only increased. To say I cried is an understatement. I babbled like the new baby in my arms. All I can vividly remember as far as my thoughts was "Oh my God. He won. He really won." And I was met with equal incredulousness during each call I made. So it wasn't just me. It wasn't just hyperbolized sentiment. It was real, and it was the definition of epic.

What a time to be alive. No, really, what a day to be alive.

I want to take a moment to state that the U.S. did not elect Barack Obama because he was Black. America wasn't ever going to rally behind a lackluster candidate simply because he was Black. No, we elected Obama because he was the living embodiment of political perfection. He was sharp, graceful and appealing, in his words, mannerisms and actions. And he did so happen to be Black.

So, back to 2016. As I sat crying watching old YouTube videos of Election 2008 coverage, I wholeheartedly remembered. I was still able to invoke the spirit of that mild autumn day when true American history was made. I still wept when watching a video of Beyoncé singing to the 44th President of the United States of America, at his Inauguration Ball. She herself was crying, and I can't imagine the honor she must have felt as a Black woman from the deep South to sing for him. I absolutely bellowed once I reflected on my own honor to be able to witness this. This is not to be taken lightly. Just 50 short years ago, my grandfather was being spit on and called a boy by men no older than him. 50 years ago, he was not able to drink from a water fountain despite his thirst. 50 years ago, there were dogs and hoses turned loose on us just for simply being present in places it was preferred we not be. To really understand the weight of living to see this when so many did not, was and likely may remain the most historically significant event that I have seen in my entire life. I feel chills as I write this, my eyes brimming with tears of both ecstasy and humility.

I share that to say this: For all of those who fret the coming administration, take heart in the fact you were alive to witness such greatness eight years ago. Olaf from Frozen could be elected and it still would do nothing to diminish the magnitude and the beauty of what you have seen. Nothing or no one can ever erase the legacy of what we have been privileged to observe. No amount of ugliness or divisiveness or hatred will dissolve where we have been. Not only did we make history that night, but we reaffirmed it in 2012. When his name, not as President but as a man, couldn't be tarnished, some resorted to such claims as he didn't possess the birthright to obtain the presidency. When that didn't hold up, they then questioned his credentials and whether or not he was really a Harvard graduate, which is the ugliest claim of all in my opinion. But still, even this does nothing to invalidate what we felt in that split second the election was called.

We have all heard or said terrible things about our 44th President. And guess what? That's OK. In my lifetime, although short, I have never known a president that was not subject to harsh criticism. That is the nature of the job, and he should be no different. Every four years, the country is halved in opinion over leadership, and will continue to differ throughout the term. Most people will never approve of who they did not vote for. That will never change. But regardless of how you felt about him politically, you cannot deny the significance of what he accomplished, and where as a nation we stood that day. In a way, that's the beauty of it. To even have a Black man in a position to be criticized as the POTUS is a remarkable advancement for America. And so, my heavy hearted, I nor you can change a thing. He exhausted his terms, and new blood has been elected. But what I can do is encourage you to take a moment away from your fear, from your anger, from your disillusion, from the constant negativity fueled by the incessant media, and to take a little time to find some healing and peace, to reclaim your patriotism and maybe even a little contentment in remembrance of the sublime excellence of the Fourth of November, 2008.
