So you wanna watch Burrow's End but you are a Delicate Flower (TM) and don't know if you can tolerate gore, body horror, suspense, etc. But you reeeeaaallly really love Aabria DMing and all the players, and all your friends are excited and talking about it, what do you do? (It's me, I'm the Delicate Flower.)

First, know the difference between "this is uncomfortable" and "this is unsafe". It's really important to be in tune with your body and know what's inside your window of tolerance, what's on the edge of your window tolerance and what is straight-up trauma triggering you.

If you know ahead of time what your specific trauma triggers are, look at the content warnings, ask friends, or ask in the Discord server (either on the Burrow's End channel or DM the mods) for if those specific things are described and/or shown. Note the time stamps.

Skip the sections that trauma-trigger you. That might be the whole episode. Or the whole season. Take care of yourself. But if you think it's uncomfy and just outside of your window of tolerance, carry on. . .

If it's something that you think you might be ok with, try reducing visual input: listen to the audio-only version, adjust your screen setting so things are in different colours, make your browser window small to reduce details. If you're near-sighted like me, take your glasses off to blur things.

Alternatively, your brain might make things MORE detailed and worse than they actually are, in which case, try watching and focusing on the cast, their interactions, the funny bits, the sweet bits. Also try half-watching it while doing some other task like folding laundry, or doing something like knitting or hand-sewing.

Look at the set with analytic movie-maker brain. How did they make this TECHNICALLY? What shots are they using? Notice the cuts, the lighting, the paint details. Think about the boring nitty-gritty backstage details that went into making this.

Watch with someone safe.

Make stupid jokes (The Blue is Walmart)

DO NOT EAT WHILE WATCHING (Alternatively, eating and drinking may actually help because eating food activates the parasympathetic nervous system aka the calm down system)

Take it in small chunks. Watch only a few minutes at a time, and then do something else grounding and calming.

Watch during daylight, so you can process stuff BEFORE you have to sleep.

Have an aftercare plan in place, either for processing (talk about it with a friend, yell about it on Discord or Tumblr, journal, have a little sob, make art about it) or for distracting (watch funny and wholesome videos, scroll Instagram, go to work, play with your cat, read a book, go for a walk, have a wild dance party)

Have an after-aftercare plan in place for when stuff crops up a few days or weeks later and unwelcome things pop into your brain. (Hint: treat 'em like intrusive thoughts; just let them fly through like li'l bats out to get a mosquito dinner and move on to the next thought.)

Read all the spoilers beforehand (on the Dropout Discord, here, on other socials), and desensitise yourself to pictures that way.

Write a tumblr post to help other people out

Don't feel ashamed for reacting with disgust, horror, feeling like you want to cry and generally being a Delicate Flower. We all have different nervous systems and different tolerances and life experiences and traumas, you're not better if you can stomach gore and horror and you're not Too Much if you get squeamish at just the thought of some of the things mentioned in ep 2 of Burrow's End.

wrt that poll abt tone indicators thats going around.w ell first of all tbh i think some of the hatred for them comes from cringe culture. but second of all. some of the criticism is totally fair like there are a fuckton of tone indicators and sometimes . there really dont need to be. and the abbreviations can be confusing i try to type out ones that arent s srs or j. tho i feel like most of the newer ones were popularized on twt so itmakes sense they wouldnt be written all the way out

Ok ok so context about this, last year at december, my friends and I in our discord server "constellation collective" were doing a challenge called Constellation Impact, where basically we created self insert characters in the Genshin Impact universe (I will post about mine when I have a comic ready which will probably be months from now because I am bad at being consistent). Some of the people in that groupchat wanted to participate but had little idea what genshin was so I took it upon myself to make a short (57 slides) presentation that explains very surface level stuff that I thought would be useful for the character creation, thought sometimes I would get really into explaining stuff that in retrospect would be completely useless for the character creation. The idea was that I would present it on call (hence why there were so many "presenting Kyeterna take it away" tidbits)

im back. you know what.. i just saw the videos from the gaol for the first time (i thought my soul would cringe out my butthole) and it wasn’t that bad. yes, it’s stupid for the owner to leak it, and the fans gathering like that is hella cringe. but people made it out a lot worse. snc handled that very well. colby immediately takes charge and says they’re not doing individuals but can do a group photo.

they had the opportunity to completely ignore the fans but I reckon once they got set up inside they knew it was likely in the best interest of the shoot to go see the fans outside then they’ll leave. then they booked it inside after a quick goodbye lol

nicely handled, very pr. their manager would be proud.

i will say sam recording them for xplrclub (idk if he actually posted it on xplrclub, i dont have the app) tells me they actually didnt care the fans were there. bc if they did, why celebrate it? this just validates the behaviour. But oh well lol

See, the problem is that the people involved in leaking this info in the first place are out there trying to justify their doxxing actions because "snc looked happy, so who cares."

And hey, maybe they knew about this beforehand, and that's fine. And I don't really begrudge the fans that were given the opportunity from the owners to go in and meet them, cause they were given a chance and took it.

My problem lies with the people who are straight up stalking them. Following them everywhere and going onto that goddamn discord server and gc and telling everyone where they will be - up to and including their hotels and rental car info - following them to their hotel, talking to the hotel staff, joking openly about knocking on hotel room doors to find them...and that behavior is now being celebrated because these idiots are out there going "well they were happy to see us, so stop hating," and just trying to gaslight everyone who is rightly uncomfortable about how far this shit is escalating.

There is no universe in which snc is fine with everything that is transpiring. They may have been fine with the owner bringing people into the Gaol, idk. If they were, then I'm happy for everyone involved. But there's no way on earth they are ok with being stalked and doxxed at the level that is going on. But because this group of people got them on camera smiling and controlling the situation, everyone who has been behaving abhorantly and participating in this shit is now taking this as a sign that it's game on.

They did handle the situation like pros, considering how it does appear that they were completely taken aback by the whole thing (from comments I've seen from the staff onsite). I give them kudos for that. The only problem is, now everyone thinks it's totally fine to encourage and continue this behavior, and it's going to escalate and end very, very badly.

But yea, idk why they left their producer in the States...unless he's there and just in hiding, idk. I'd be hiding, if I were him. 🤣

Idk, this whole situation is just ugly and not ok, especially if this owner really did set them up. But even if he didn't - these fans that are publicly doxxing them and the ones encouraging it need to be stopped. 🤷‍♀️

But it's in one ear and out the other with them, so whatever. Hopefully they get through the next week without any traumatic incidents or pending lawsuits lol.

NOW TO THE INFODUMPING! Sry not sry you asked for this I’m just gunna go full ham. (I figured out how to add a read more link! hah!)

OK SO! I’ve got so many! Top fav is my ones for Crowbar of course. I love making his juju a sentient being and having it effect him negatively by applying sensitivity for timeline shenanigans on him. This also means Crowbar is weak against temporal movement like teleportation. He’s fine for the most part if the Doc teleports him with green sun magic but if Droog does it, it gets him sick and dizzy for a bit.

Oh! Also that Crowbar has lots of hobbies, but every single one is a benefit to his Felts. He’s incapable of doing activities selfishly and has a hard time detaching himself from his work. Expressing himself creatively? Sure! How about he gets into woodworking and architecture so he can repair walls, doors, and clocks whenever they break around the manor. Taking time off to zone out and relax? No problem! He unironically loves doing paperwork because the exactness of the wording comfort him and he can keep business flowing. (He secretly collects the small manuals that comes with most products because finding grammar mistakes in the terms and conditions amuses him.) He even has a mild special interest in car detailing and cleaning so that the getaway cars for everyone are in top condition, and so that the manor is clean and free of evidence.

Oh and that reminds me that I love to hc that the manor (I make it sentient) looooves Crowbar the most out of any member since he’s the only one that takes care of it. The manor’s architecture shifts constantly to confuse intruders and such, but for Crowbar it shifts to get him to wanted destinations faster. If Crowbar wants to get to the west wing from the east wing, only Itchy has a chance to close the distance faster than him. Ah! It’s so funny! I’m smiling about it now! Aaaa I love them!

And! And and I love to hc Crowbar being super dense in matters of love. In the server (there is rp and I am the dedicated Crowbar rper) I make sure to have him make the perfectly wrong assumption any time someone falls for him bc Cro mentally cannot comprehend someone being attracted to him- OH THAT REMINDS ME OF ANOTHER ONE! I hc that to us irl humans Crowbar is the most normal and even the sexiest felt, but in leprechaun standards Crowbar is like, the ugliest leprechaun ever. Leprechaun standards value weird shapes, weird chaotic habits, and the scrungle vibe, and Crowbar is intimately aware he doesn’t embody any of it, so it’s just like. “Um. I know damn well I don’t make an effort to strive towards beauty standards, so,,, why are you falling for me again? Surely this is a joke? This, isn’t what people are supposed to do.”

On that note though, I think Crowbar has a hard time with charms as a system. He’s effected by it and feels it occasionally, but he does much better with quadrants and carapacians in general. He doesn’t like talking about it with his men because he’s scared they are going to make fun of him for it, but they probably already know what with his little Snowman crush.

Hot take I could do with or do without Snowbar. It really depends on who I’m roleplaying with. For the most part I love it because it emphasizes the fact that Crowbar is just really fucking weird compared to other leprechauns. He’s orderly, he’s bi, he likes things to be a certain consistent way, and there’s nothing be can do about it. It just makes me feel warm inside. If my rp partner doesn’t like the ship though I loooooove to make Snowman and Cro like, slumber party pals. They engage in the tea and girl talk! Wlw and mlm! Snowy is the man’s rock and sense of reason in a sea of idiots.

Though hm, now for other Felt. I do like the idea that Itchy actually has garbage reaction time and is in a state of single focused mania a lot. My mans has trouble sleeping and knowing his environment and it can take a toll on his mind, but when he does sleep his metabolism is too fast for such a long sleep and he has to go into a hibernation state! Like a hummingbird! (That’s @naturallydark ‘shc for the Itchy they rp in the server) aaaa good stuff. Oh and I love to think Itchy is chronically bored and has big issues with being under-stimulated, which is why he is friends with most of the felt and will bother them. The company makes him happy! And when he’s not being a lil fuck, he does know how to cheer the majority of the Felt up when they are down.

On the flip side I love imagining that Doze actually has insane reaction time, his world just slows when he’s stressed, which doesn’t happen as often as folks might think. I imagine Doze’s biggest fear is getting irreversibly maimed so his powers activate during physical combat, but other than that he’s a pretty normal dude. Probably the type to catch a bunch of dishes and have everything land on the tray again cartoon style. Definitely thinks he’s the coolest guy in the room (civilized edition)

Fin is just cute. Man just, swims in the dumbest places. You can never predict when he will be in a body of water. Kinda hates when anyone dumps dead bodies in the canal and will drag them out of the water to toss to the lusi (lusus’s?) wandering the desert when he can.

Clover and Snowman get along really well. Like, Snowman thinks Clover is strangely charismatic, but this is almost purely because the universe loves Clover.

Anything @ontdah does with his Die makes me happy. Just. Anything. Love that angsty man.

Snowman can absolutely take damage without it effecting the rest of the universe. (I despise the fact that the prominent badass female character can’t roughhouse) like, she is a universe avatar. She can just choose to be an avatar of some useless far off planet, she just likes the power trip with being able to stop any fight she’s in by just standing there. Only the Felt know this but they keep it a safely guarded secret and they still respect the rules of it. After all she likes having star freckles when she embodies everything so she actually is in that vulnerable state most of the time. It’s like, her shitty personal version of a Russian roulette, but with the lives of every single person alive. She’s a massive troll. In the most dignified way possible. Stitch thinks she’s crazy, Crowbar finds her fascinating in her selfishness.

Stitch is one of the rarer less chaotic leprechauns, and he gets along pretty well with Crowbar. For the most part he’s the dad figure of the felt despite not being the oldest, and will let any of them silently hang out with him if the fucked up ness of their life becomes too much. The official sawbones, and less official therapist of the lads. Makes sure they have everything they need to handle any mental stuff they struggle with. He helps Itchy with his adhd, works with Matchsticks (more often) and Cro (less often) on their ptsd, helps lots of them with anxiety, rationalizes through Clover’s survivors guilt, and even has chats with Snowy when she’s feeling existential. He is incredibly emotionally intelligent and likes to use that ability for good, however gruff it comes across.

Sawbuck is the nice fuck boi of the Felt and you cannot convince me otherwise. Clover may be the most charismatic over all, but Sawbuck definitely has the most game. The guy is a dream boat, an absolute hunk. Sawbuck is the sexiest man alive and everyone in the felt (no matter how reluctantly) agrees with it.

Matchsticks is a pyromaniac and is constantly curbing his own urges to just burn everything to the ground, timeline included. He’s a REALLY nice guy, but the urges get to him sometimes. (Hc from @ontdah )He has troubles staying present at times and keeps multiple fires burning around the manor for convenience and for reminiscing. Crowbar has to tell Matchsticks when meetings will be hours or even days in advance or else he might not be able to include him. The guy just, travels a lot and is hard to find. His jokes cheer everyone up, but it’s clear he’s not always happy. Stitch and Matchsticks spend the most time with each other. Stitch has personally guided Matchsticks into being more present, but it’s a constant process.

Eggs is fantastic at retelling heists in engaging ways. If anyone wants a retelling of events, they tend to go to Eggs, even if Crowbar has the better memory. It’s more entertaining that way.

Biscuits makes food for the Felt. Without him they would all immediately starve. Some felt know how to cook, but only Biscuits knows how to portion meals to feed all of them correctly. He’s also their silent nutritionist and will give you a look of disappointment if you ever come into the manor with, ugh, FROG FORBID Store. Bought. Sweets. He has standards. Most of his free time is spent in the kitchen and he is the only Felt besides Crowbar who is allowed an allowance for groceries.

Quarters is a gun freak and gives all of them names and backstories like iron dolls. If you handle a gun incorrectly in front of him he’s going to very passive aggressively judge you until you piss him off enough to drag you back into gun training. He taught most every member how to use firearms (except for Stitch, Matchsticks, and Clover) but he has made every single one of them take a firearms course, hosted by himself of course. Snowman and Quarters have long bouts of dark humor involving weapons sometimes too. They started being friends after he taught her how to use a sniper rifle.

Cans is Crowbar’s bean bag and they are bros. They cuddle lots and talk about stuff. I imagine Cans has almost an enthusiastic butler sort of relationship with Crowbar and Crowbar can do nothing to refute this. After many, many, months and years of Cans comforting Crowbar and being there for him and helping him out of risky situations, Crowbar has succumbed to trusting the man fully. Whenever Crowbar is having troubles sleeping he will simply drag himself over to Cans’s room and nap with him. They are cute.

1. the character everyone gets wrong

Every time someone tries to tie canon characters in any way to the show counterparts an angel dies in Heaven. Which happens with... plenty of them, and it's probably one of the biggest source of getting most characters wrong. Not to be a snob, but watch something good for a change.

5. worst discord server and why

Not currently on discord, and I've seen some petty drama on some when I was. But what this question makes me think of is that one time I glimpsed a post in between folks who had an anti Targs discord or something like it, and other than the losercore of having a discord to be an anti in, there was some inside joke about being a "Tywin fucker" and I am just happy I would never be there.

7. what character did you begin to hate not because of canon but because how how the fandom acts about them?

Can't deal with a lot of characters that attract too obnoxious stanning, but it depends on how much I care on whether I take the "these people can pry them from my cold dead hands" or "not worth the trouble" stances. Jon catches shitty dudebro or shipping strays but he's in the first category and I'm pulling hard on my side of the rope. Characters like Sansa and Catelyn could be interesting in the complexity of being good aligning characters that are also meant to be critically appraised for gender and class scrutiny, and sometimes I attempt to touch them with a pole, but you dare even mention it and you get the "how dare you?" - not worth it ("Catelyn would be Leslie Knope if Martin let her HOW DARE YOU POINT OUT EDMURE CARES MORE" ok). I'm also trying to come back round to Dornish characters who unfortunately attract unsavoury crowds weaponising their ambiguous race for clout and online harassment apologia - the women in particular are worth it. I also used to love Brienne|Jaime|Braime but long story short here I wouldn't even care to get back. So not worth it.

So this is actually a... request? Kinda??? I don't know if you remember or not (you were part of the convo, but it was a while ago now), but for those who don't/aren't in it:

Flavioli in the server (join if you aren't there already!!!!) came up with the concept of Simon being treated kind of like Finnick was in the Hunger Games series: being sent to higher ranking members of the World of Mages as "company" (i.e., prostitution/escort work, in a way). The plot would take place after the Humdrum is defeated in an AU where Simon doesn't connect with Baz and still trusts the Mage at the end. The Mage finds a use for Simon once he's lost all his magic, having Simon sexually service influential people to gain influence for Davy himself. Here's the link to the convo if you're in the Discord and want to read back yourself!

In the planning I've done so far, it's going to be all from non-Simon POVs. Baz in particular finds out months or years after this started happening and decides to figure out how to "hire" Simon himself in order to talk to him and help him get out of his situation.

Here's a couple excerpts because I couldn't pick one:

“You were Snow’s roommate, weren’t you, Basilton?” “Yes, sir,” I respond, quirking an eyebrow. “Did he ever whore himself out to you? Taught him everything he knows, ay?” Clark laughs. Addams is smirking like we’re sharing an inside joke, but I’m in too much shock to properly respond. “Excuse me?” I can’t keep the venom from my voice, but neither man seems to notice. “You were there when he defeated the Humdrum. Emotions must have been running pretty high, and with a body like his… Well, I wouldn’t blame you for taking what you wanted.”

Addams responds by leaning up to my ear. The feeling of his hot, rancid breath against my ear nearly makes me gag. “Talk to Davy and he’ll get you set up. Tell him you want to have a meeting with the Chosen One about his company. He’ll make sure you’re… taken care of.” Addams pulls back and claps me on the shoulder with a sickening grin and a wink. He walks to the table just as the Mage himself walks in. I leave without bothering to grab my coat.

The second I’m outside, I dial Fiona. “Don’t you have a coven meeting right now, boyo? Finally loosening up a bit?” she cackles. “Did you know?” I growl into the phone. “I know a lot of things. You’re going to have to b-“ “Fiona, tell me you didn’t know.” I know I probably sound hysterical, but I can't help it. I am hysterical.

Anyway! This isn't really my comfort zone to write, but I was super interested in the concept as something to read and no one else seemed comfortable with writing it.

I haven't done much with it since the day we discussed it back in early September, but I feel like it'll happen at some point. It's something that I've gotta be kind of delicate with, considering the subject matter, and I do need to figure out how to write this in a way I feel comfortable, so I'm not gonna rush it.

And if anyone else wants to take this concept off my hands, please let me know! I feel like someone else would do a much better job writing this than I could, so my DMs are open if you want to claim it :)

Top of the Stack, Issue 26

Greetings friends,

just a quick hello from me before the month is out! February was rough in so many ways. I only posted a few updates on Twitter and kept folks up to date through the discord server, so if you’ve been wondering why I’ve been kinda quiet, here’s a sign of life!

I’m ok! My family’s been put through it this month, with first my godfather passing away, then my dad suffering a stroke just three weeks ago, and now my mum’s apartment being uninhabitable thanks to a broken heater that the landlord isn’t really fussed about repairing. In the middle of winter. There’s other stuff going on I won’t go into here, but these next few months will be eventful. Something something unprecedented times.

The good news: after three weeks in hospital, receiving genuinely excellent care, my dad is back home! He’s made a remarkable recovery. Thankfully, mum can stay with him while she looks for a new place to live — it means she’ll worry less, and he can help her with the paperwork. It’s very German of him, I think. Give a man paperwork to do and he learns to walk again.

I took a break from streaming and everything throughout all that because there was no way I could have even pretended to be a functional human being. My sister and I also both stayed with our mum for the first week after dad’s stroke, and every single day was so exhausting, emotionally and physically. As healing as it was to have all four of us together, and see how much it helped my parents to have us show up like that and be present, there’s still a cost to it. You’re running on survival mode — the three of us had to remind each other to eat, to drink enough, to take sit down — and at the same time there’s a want for normalcy. To enjoy the time together, to dig for another silly joke, another laugh. For my dad, it was a huge part of his early recovery: to know that this was not the end.

Once I came back home and things were looking so much better than the week before, I just let myself rest. I went back to work, but the remainder of the time, I played video games. I’d torn through Horizon Zero Dawn the first weekend to distract myself, and then it was straight on to Forbidden West. The right amount of game, at the right time. (I really mostly played it to turn my brain off, but it turns out I caught thoughts in spite of myself: there’s a blog and video essay coming about knowledge as an objective and theme in both games’ narratives.) I’ve slowed it down now, but I still sit down nearly every evening to play more. I can enjoy it for what it is, and playing it doesn’t bring anything back up. But it really helped.

Can a video game save a life? Yes. Without that distraction, my mind would have turned itself inside-out with grief. It is grief, even when you’re not (yet) bereaved. Only time will tell how we all process this. Thus far, the relief over my dad’s quick progress has bolstered us, I think. But there’ll be more to deal with, as there always is.

I’m back to streaming and making videos and writing now, after taking time to adjust to everyday life and recalibrate my energy. I did a recording session for Bioshock first; sort of as a practice run for to-camera stuff and interacting at least with an asynchronous audience. This gave me the added safety net of being able to just stop at any point without having to manage any (even positive!) reaction in the moment. That went well, however, so I felt confident in streaming again on Friday. I enjoy it so much, and I knew that taking a break was the right choice precisely when my feeling switched from being glad I had nothing on on a Friday night for a while to being excited to stream again.

Now we’re heading into March and I hope that it will be a kinder time for all of us. Be gentle with yourselves 💜

Why is it hard for me to make friends/keep friends? I like to think I’m a nice person, and all my life I’ve been told I’m a “people person” (which has proven to be false). No matter if I talk to people online or irl nothing ever sticks. So why try at all? I see accounts who all talk with each other and have inside jokes and discord servers and it genuinely makes me feel bad because like, what’s wrong with me that I don’t have that? I don’t have a friend group, or people to understand me, or listen to/care about anything I say. I’m so alone and I try to pretend like I don’t care but I only do that to avoid being let down. Then it makes me think if I can’t even get friends how am I supposed to ever find someone to spend the rest of my life with? Am I just going to be alone forever? Constantly pretending like I’m ok with not having anyone? I don’t understand. Is it me?

👣 How many OCs do you have? Which one is your favorite and why?

Heh, so...My list of OC's is expansive? It would be hard to count them all. Pretty much any little dude I make, whether it's for a DnD campaign or just a silly goof is up there in my head. You don't wanna go in there, trust me.

Picking one favorite is hard if I'm honest so I'll do my top 3;

Axel Darren - He is a soft hearted person who will fight to protect his friends. He was experimented on by his parents at a young age and has a sort of 'shield' for skin, so he's hard to hurt outwardly, but he still has squishy insides. Why is he a fave? Probably because he's one of the most prominent muses I RP with my partner. He's also just generally my soft little guy who is too kind for his own good. He genuinely wants to believe the world is good despite everything.

Bastian Wright - OK, this dude was a JOKE. I was playing around with Sims 4 one day like 6 yrs ago and made a freckled red head human who I stuck in a house full of vampires....And then the idea sparked from there? He's a goofball who loves cryptic things. Avid ghost hunter and a kind soul. He gets himself into a lot of trouble on his own. Something bad always tends to happen. Whether he dies or gets blinded or any number of things... Why is he a fave? Because he's a goofball, and it also gives me as the writer a way to express my own love for cryptic things. They're genuinely fun. This boy is precious.

Malik Rashad - Honestly? Not gunna lie, this guy was purely created to be a grumpy person in the Borderlands verse so I could poke a friend and their OCs. And then he became more. He's a grumpy sword wielder with insomnia and a cigarette addiction. Why is he a fave? Because, at the end of the day, he has a tragic back story and he does bad things, but he tries to still be a good person. He's fun to play and just generally poke and be a shit with people.

✍️  Do you prefer discord, tumblr, google docs, or in-game RP? What makes it (or them) your preference?

Discord and Tumblr are my go tos, but sometimes I really don't have the energy for Tumblr. Tumblr is a lot of work and dedication. I love it, but it can also play on my brain sometimes. Discord I find to be easier to handle when I'm having a bad funk brain day. Mostly because I can hide there with friends.

Aaaannnd making RP servers is kinda fun...plotting all the things.
