A follow up to this post.

So gonna rant a bit more about this fantasy AU I literally concocted in my sleep. No joke. I was dreaming about it, and I actually woke up just as they were about to kiss. Damn it.

The premise about this AU is that a kingdom is at war with the dragons, over the right of land, for ten centuries.

Myth/History According to the kingdom’s founding myth, their ancestors once sailed across the seas, braving countless trials and tribulations barring their path, to settle in an idyllic land promised to them by their Lord Arceus - which is where their kingdom is now located in. However, unbeknownst to them, the land belonged to an evil horde of dragons who did not take kindly to their intrusion. Thus, led by the dreadwyrm Altair, they rained their fury upon them, killing scores and leaving countless maimed, orphaned and widowed.

Enraged, the founding king Vitus led his army to the lair of the dreadwyrm and ambushed it. What followed was a fierce battle, dragonfire and scales clashing against steel and enchanted chainmail, and one that would eventually claim the king’s life. In retaliation, the crown prince assaulted the dragon in a reckless gambit, piercing his lance through its hide and ripping out its eyes from their sockets. Blinded, the dreadwyrm fled for its life, leaving the remnants of the king’s forces and the crown prince to mourn the loss of their beloved ruler.

The eyes would later become the kingdom’s treasures, their best instrument of defense against the relentless assaults of their draconic enemies. Wielded by the Crimson and Argent Dragoons, it grants its user the might of the dragons, giving the kingdom a chance against this endless conflict...

Kingdom of Aevium A prosperous nation built upon temperate lands, renowned for its lush plains and breathtaking countrysides during the springtime.

The kingdom is dominated by two entities: the ruling family, and the Aevian Orthodox Church. Officially, the royal family has complete authority over the governance of the kingdom, but in reality the power is shared between them and the Church due to a clandestine alliance made some generations ago.

The royal family, also known as the House of Theolia, is the ruling family since the kingdom’s inception. Descended from the crown prince renowned for his dragonslaying feats, and by extension the First King, they were the one of the noble families famous for producing exemplary Dragoons - lance-wielding knights specialising in the art of dragonslaying - who had gone down in the pages of history as legendary heroes.

Traditionally, the firstborn and (usually) heir to the throne takes on the position of Argent Dragoon. It’s simply done out of a tribute to their ancestor, if anything, rather than a reflection of their actual capabilities. For this reason, they are given the Right Eye - a symbol of the prestigious role - once they were deemed ready for their duties.

As for the Aevian Orthodox Church, it itself is divided into several branches, but all of them answer to the Pontifex who in turn answer to the king. Not only is the Church in charge of the kingdom’s religion, it also manages a bulk of the kingdom’s military, the more mundane aspects of the kingdom’s governing as well as serving as the nation’s best academy for mages.

Dragons Magical creatures said to be creations of the nature goddess Nymiera, when droplets of her blood touched the earth. Blessed with immortality, a fearsome might - both physical and magical - and intelligence far surpassing that of most humans, they have been the sworn nemeses of the Kingdom of Aevium since its founding.

Despite the kingdom’s over-generalisation of dragon hierarchy, not all are actively hostile against the kingdom. The ones who have sworn vengeance upon them were known as the Dravanians amongst their kind, the name meaning “dreaded ones” in their tongue. However, the implications behind its title is a misnomer, as it merely refers to descendants of the dreadwyrm Altair - who was, in turn, one of Nymiera’s original children - rather than hinting at their savagery. Most simply wished to be left alone in peace, undisturbed by the foolish mortals who had trespassed onto their sacred land.

Their capabilities is largely unknown to the kingdom, though some of their basic abilities (i.e. magic, flight, tremendous strength and fire breathing) are common knowledge. A lesser known fact about them is that a few - specifically those of the divine bloodline or direct descendants of Nymiera - had the rare ability to assume a human form by shedding their skins, allowing them to disguise themselves should the need arises. However, due to their prideful natures, it is almost unheard of for them to do so.
