The female lions of the Okavango Delta in Botswana epitomize all of the agility, stealth, and intuitive cooperation that define a lioness-led hunt. Male lions get much of the limelight, but the lionesses are the true heart of the pride-and they perform the bulk of the demanding work required to sustain it. The crimson "war paint" on this lioness is a visceral reminder of how closely her existence is tied to the cycle of life and death.

"The Milky Way" by Kush Chandaria
A brilliantly vivid image of our galaxy, the Milky Way, shot by Kush Chandaria from the Okavango Delta, in Botswana. In his submission, Chandaria talks about being able to see the Milky Way with his own eyes for the first time, and the tragedy of increasing light pollution. There are many locations throughout the world untouched by light pollution, called Dark Sky zones. Unfortunately, the lights of growing cities make these areas fewer and fewer. "I can only hope that in capturing this image I can share the same feeling of amazement that I felt when I looked up at the sky that night," Chandaria said.

Against the backdrop of a fire-red horizon, these lions are triggered into action by a clan of hyenas on the lookout for a meal. The African bush is a different place under the cover of darkness; lethargic lions turn into alert killers, the night air fills with the cackling laughter of spotted hyenas, and another chapter in the age-old battle between these bitter rivals is written. It's an ancient feud we captured on camera for the first time in our film "Eternal Enemies", and nearly twenty years later, we continue to grow our understanding of these fascinating predator interactions.
