Chapter 3: Unexpected Guest

2007! Raphael x Female! Reader

Summary: After a much needed shower, your surprised with an unexpected guest, and an eye-widenening discovery

Warnings: Slight gore, swearing, and nothing else really i dont think

A/N: sorry this ones a lil bit shorter, oh well <3

You had just got out of the shower, changing into your pajamas while you let your hair air dry. You were currently finishing hanging up the towel to dry, when you heard a loud CRASH! You jumped, screaming a bit in surprise. Grabbed your straightener, and cautiously walked out into the living room. Straightener raised in hand, you couldn't see anyone or anything out of place, until you heard faint groaning outside of your window. You frowned, raising the hair product even higher, and you pulled back the curtains to look out onto the fire escape.

You couldn't see anyone - until you saw shuffling from below. You looked down and your eyes widened. There he was, The Nightwatcher, on the ground. You (gently) threw the straightener onto the coffee table, and you opened the window, climbing out and cautiously stepping over the man. You knelt down beside him.

"S-sir? Are you okay? You're The N-Nightwatcher right?" You asked in a shaky voice, gently placing your hand on his shoulder.

He scoffed, shoving your hand off of him but hissed in pain. "I'm fine woman, get off -- Ah fck..." He tried to sit up, but fell back down, holding part of his chest.

You frowned and peeked over, gently moving his hand out of the way to see the wound. Your eyes widened when you realised that blood was everywhere, seeping down the suit and all over his hand.

He groaned, trying to lean away from you. "I said I'm fine! It's just a little blood." He growled.

"No you're not fine. I need to call an ambulance -"

"No!!" He barked. "Look, all i need is a lil bandaid, that's it!" You rolled your eyes then leaned over, wrapping your arms around his shoulders and lifted him up. You struggled, but finally managed. He was muttering and mumbling out little protests but you ignored him. His knees were wobbly.

You carefully lead him in through your window, making sure he didn't fall. You lead him to your couch where he slumped down. "I'll be right back, don't move."

He didn't respond, and you went to get your first aid kit from the bathroom. When you got back, his head was thrown back as he breathed heavily, hand on his wound to slow the bleeding. You sat down beside him, turning towards him as you opened the kit.

"You need to take off your helmet so you can breathe. And also at least the first half of your suit."

He turned to look at you weakly. "Fck no."

You sighed in frustration. "Look, do you want me to help you? You need to breathe in fresh air and I need to clean the wound!"

"I said... n-no..!" He pointed to you, before slumping down again, he let out a shaky breath. You didn't care anymore. You reached over and started to take off the helmet. He tried to lean away, but he was too weak to do anything.

When you took off the helmet, you gasped. For some stupid reason, he had a weird looking lizard mask on with red fabric around his eyes. You groaned in frustration as you looked around his head to take the mask off. But after looking for a bit, you started to panic. "How do I take this mask off?!"

"I-its not..." He mumbled out, looking away at the window.

Your eyes widened. You hesitantly put your hand on his head again, feeling the warmth and leathery scale-like texture. You screamed and jumped back. "WTF?!"

He winched, leaning away. "B-be quiet, jesus..."

You sat there in shock. Wtf was he? But you snapped out of it when you saw his eyes drooping, him going more limp as he lost more blood.

You kept staring at him as you leaned back, slowly taking the zipper of his suit and pulling down. The further you went, the wider your eyes got. You didn't go all the way, only what was necessary. You pulled back the flap to show the wound. It was right above what looked like a plastron. A turtle plastron. You suddenly remembered the turtle shell on his back and his three fingers.

Your heart was racing while you started to clean the wound. He winced in pain, but at least he was still moving. Once you had gotten most of the blood away from the wound, you put some gauze and bandage around it, wrapping it around his shoulders. 

"We should probably, um… Probably get you out of this suit." You said as gently as possible. He just mumbled out in response, but leaned forward to assist you in taking the suit off. "You have pants on, right..?" You asked nervously before he could take it all the way off. "Don't need 'em..." He said weakly but still gruff, finishing taking the suit off. He slumped back, taking slow, deep breaths through his nose. You rubbed your neck nervously, before standing up and taking the suit. 

"I'll wash this while you rest. You're probably exhausted." You said softly, staring at his plastron and turtle shell.

He shifted uncomfortably while nodding.

You nodded, before walking to the bathroom. You turned the tap on the freezing cold to let it soak. You could barely see the blood because of the dark colour of the suit, but you still wanted to wash it out. You let it soak in there for a bit before walking back to the living room to ask if he needed anything, but saw he had fallen asleep. You sighed before grabbing a throw blanket, carefully laying him down on his back so he was more comfortable before placing the blanket over his green form. You sat there for a couple minutes, analyzing his weird and unique figure. What was he? Was he just a walking, talking turtle? You looked at the side of the couch where the helmet was, and there were a pair of weird looking forks. You think they were called sais or something like that? You frowned a little before setting them on the coffee table. You sighed, looking back at the turtle one last time, before walking to your room to turn in for another sleepless night.

reader is insanely oblivious but charles is practically all over her, ever since they met she never picked up on his flirting or lingering touches. charles has resigned himself to loving someone who will never love him back the way he wants, and surrounds himself with her to make up for it. he lives off the tastes of her love that he gets, like when she sleeps over because she stays too late and they wake up cuddled up together. or when she comes to his races and is with his team when he finishes and she's the first person he goes to for a hug. or how every time they casually say bye, love you! charles lets himself pretend she’s as in love with him as he is her. then he sees her again and is reminded of it when she doesn’t react when he tries to flirt with her or gets a little handsy when he's drunk. she’s so convinced that he’s just her best friend and that’s all he’ll ever be that when he flirts and puts his hands on her, she tells herself that’s how he acts with everyone.

she’s getting ready for a date while he lounges on her bed. he was cuddled into her pillows while she pulled out dresses and held them up asking his opinion, and he keeps giving unenthusiastic answers, or flat out saying she should cancel the date and stay in with him. then she pulls out a little black dress and says, “oh, i forgot i had this one!” and charles feels his mind spin at the thought of her in the slinky black dress of someone else seeing her in it. her wearing it for someone else. all he can muster up is, “i didn’t know you had that one.” she misses the strange lilt to his voice and teases him, “well i haven’t worn it yet, silly. i’m gonna try it on.” she disappears into the bathroom and returns a moment later, holding the top to her chest as the straps hang loosely down her shoulders “charlie, would you mind?”

yes, i would mind. he thinks. he very much doesn’t want to zip up the dress so another man could take it off her in a few hours. but then she’s turning around and exposing the smooth expanse of her back, the zipper cutting off just above her ass and he can see a bit of red lace peeking out right where it ends. the lack of matching bra makes him clench his jaw as he moves towards her. he trails his finger down her spine until he reaches the zipper and he makes his way back up. as soon as he finishes and she turns around, she sees the look on his face and is immediately asking if she looks okay and he tells her she looks fine. she huffs and reaches behind her to tug it off, “thanks for the enthusiasm, you’re a great hype man! not like i’m freaking out or anything.”

his jaw clenches at hype man, and he groans. “mon dieu, what do you want me to say?”

she whines and bats at his chest, “you always tell me i look pretty even when i’m in sweats, and i’m wearing a dress i’ve been saving for something special, and you’re not even reacting. i can’t even return it anymore and you’ll hate me when you hear how much i spent, so just tell me i look pretty and i’ll have fun on my date tonight.” her hands spread across his chest as she speaks, her eyes locked on them.

his hands find her wrists and he wants to push her away and leave, ask her why she keeps doing this to him. her fingers dig into his skin, sensing he’s going to remove her touch, but he leans into it. “don’t go on the date. i’ll tell you whatever you want… i’ll take you out if you wanna go out, just don’t go out with him, please.” her eyes flick up to his and she’s doesn’t recognize the pleading look in his eyes. his grip tightens on her wrists as she pulls her hands back from his chest and she sees panic set into his features before she presses her hands to his cheeks.

his eyes flutter shut and she breathes, “okay, i won’t go. we can stay in, yeah? we can talk.” he breathes a sigh of relief and nods, “talk, sure.” a moment later his hands leave her wrists and he’s dipping to clasp his hands under her thighs to lift her into the air. her hands stay on his cheeks as he guides her legs around his waist and walks her back to her bed, telling her, “you look incredible, honestly, you do. i’m so glad you aren’t going, if you left me looking like that, god it would break my fucking heart.” she whimpers and her heart stutters at the admission. she doesn’t know what to say, speechless from the sudden realization, so she pulls him in for a kiss to tell him how she feels.

Okay but WTF

Is all that goes through your head right now and tbf, it´s quite an understandable reaction when the first thing that greets you in the morning is your rather deranged looking...roommate (kidnapper), barely keeping it together and although that´s her default mode and you should at least be SOMEWHAT used to her moods and her possessed persona by now...something just didn´t seem right when you woke up. Maybe it´s the weird clicky noise that´s coming out of her mouth that strangely sounds like a zipper being closed very, very slowly (it´s hard to describe, but it´s not pleasant...or normal). Or maybe it´s the abnormal amount of saliva, dripping onto the floor and here you thought that was actually you wetting the bed because that nightmare felt so real because it is real and you think you´d much prefer wetting the bed to...whatever is standing at the end of your bed right now.

Because it might resemble Maggot Momma but it´s twitching and it´s eyes are glowing like you´ve never seen before and it´s hands are making these very subtle grabby movements in a steady rythm - twitch twitch twitch like the ticking of a clock - and whole body quivering and you realize...it´s waiting for something, completely on edge (that makes two of you) and you fear that any kind of movement could set off...something.

But nature calls yet again (you swear you´ve got a bladder the size of a peanut) and you´ve barely started to move your leg-

Well, that´s just great. Absolutely fantastic - you just can´t have one moment of peace, of sanity and fuck you might have to wet the bed after all-

You didn´t even register it at first, sounding so unlike the entity you´ve (had to) come to know - voice trembling, out of breath almost and words not quite resembling words but more like one long, drawn-out exhale.

It´s almost a bit comical (it is not) how you always seem to end up in the same situation - screaming bloody murder as you run run RUN and literally fearing for your life because you´re sure that this time - this is it - Maggot Momma has come to her senses (if that´s even possible) and decided that you´re prey to be consumed, to be devoured and your luck has truly run out.

So, running through the dark hallways it is, all while Momma is hot on your heels, cackling like a maniac - fuck if that ain´t terrifying - and just so managing to stay on her feet as she rounds the corner you just passed, her momentum propelling her against the wall, claws digging in to keep her up and going, actually ripping bits and pieces straight out of the wall and really - you should know by now that running from Momma, especially after teasing her like that (YOU DID NOT), only serves to get her tingling in all the right places and, remember, this is her thinking you´re in the mood and it´s just foreplay-

There´s a door - IT´S OPEN.

You slip-jump through the door that leads into the uninhabited apartment - close the door, put the chain up, lock the-

okay soulmates-as-horror au with zipper and river would slap, especially before them becoming friends. and i don't think i mean it exactly as "horror" here but as in. this isn't a romance. i'm talking about being terrified of your soul being bound to somebody else's, and the extrapolation that this means you two MUST fall in love/get married/other icky romantic things.

zipper, for one, goes into the whole concept of it kicking and screaming and trying to claw their way out. they don't want a soulmate!! they want to be a whole complete person on their own!! (spoiler alert: you're a whole complete person without your soulmate, but society doesn't tell people that.) zipper doesn't want anything to do with having a soulmate.

river, on the other hand, feels kind of warm and fuzzy about the idea of having someone he's destined to spend the rest of his life with; it sounds sweet to him. except his soulmate is zipper. like… them??? seriously??? he has a long, long history of not getting along with them, and now he's supposed to be in love with them?? this isn't what he had in mind. zipper is ruining his soulmate fantasies and it's awful.

Man, yesterday was truly the day from hell that will influence me for probably weeks now.

So yesterday, my day starts great. I actually feel good enough to walk to the nearest store and back at 8 AM, about a mile roundtrip. I get home, decide I'm hot, and go to shower, and this is when hell began.

I get out of the shower--glasses gone. Did I put them somewhere weird? Check every surface. ...where are my glasses. Move any piece of my furniture. no glasses. Check if it flel in trash or laundry, bag and rebag that like 3 times. Then, after almost 3 hours of ripping my place apart, I realize the candle my cat Trouble Gravity Checked, I had failed to clean up entirely and moving the furniture had slid out this titanic ass chunk of glass that had gone right through my fucking foot.

So then, like, oh neat, there's lots of blood I'm gonna have to clean up once I get my foot to stop goddamn gushing. The entire time I'm doing this the cat I goddamn KNOW is responsible for gravity checking it into Narnia is STILL knocking my shit over, STILL getting EXPLICITLY into the places he knows he shouldn't, etc, so once the bleeding stops I go to throw him in his cat carrier

...

he had somehow put my glasses in his cat carrier that he tends to use to sleep. BITCH STOLE MY GLASSES. I do not even KNOW how he moved them. So anyway while I saw his life flash before his eyes I took my glasses let him go without crating him bc glasses and man for a while that cat behaved.

Then, by aorund 8-9, he decided, if I had blocked off the front of the grow $500 grow tent he wan't allowed in, he would apparently beat the shit out of the side until the base zipper gave out to let him in to try to fuck around in the dirt, totally unaligning the damn track. So GUESS WHO DID GO IN THE CRATE.

So then I get my foot gauzed up and taped and everything since I don't have dental floss rn to stitch it myself and I ain't going to a hospital over this, the day starts being normal then like 10 PM at night some mfer in my neighborhood complex goes goddamn insane.

No, like literally insane, like AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA screaming like he's getting stabbed or some shit, yelling SHE'S FUCKIN HIM RIGHT NOW I HEAR TH EBITCH IN THE WINDOW I GOT A PROBATION WARRANT ALREADY BITCH I AINT AFRAID TO GO TO PRISON

and stalking back and fuckin forth right past my front window like 3 times between his target unit and car slamming a door while I'm listening to see if this guy got a gat, literally told the friend I had been watching game stream like. i'ma. have to mute the game volume but can still hear you, i gotta keep track of the real screaming and gunshots vs the fake ones.

Anyway the sirens get here woop wooooop. woop woooooop. and I'm like okay maybe that means they got him.

Then I hear like 4 doors down. SECURITY. SECURITY, WE ARE COMING IN. BANG BANG. Oh fuck. This dude had apparently gone suicidal and locked himself in his bathroom. I know this, because security was clustered like right outside with the cops.

They ultimately got him out by like 1 AM but I was like. JESUS, is something in the water today? My other friend even found out he had shingles, an hour before I reached out asking if he could drop me the gauze for my profusely bleeding foot

Flash back to this time in 2022. I had just finished my annual physical and wellness check. I had told my doctor I had this curious problem hiking at 7000 feet. It felt like I couldn’t catch my breath but I wasn’t really struggling for air.

My doctor said let’s do a heart workup - you’re 70 and it’s probably a good idea just to make sure nothing’s wrong.

I gave it no further thought. I did however, forget to mention occasional lightheadedness and dizziness.

Back to our story.

I made it to the cardiologist’s office in 20 minutes. I was in the waiting room about two minutes when the nurse poked her head out and called my name.

That’s spooky to anyone in a doctor’s waiting room. You just don’t get in that fast.

We got all the preliminaries stuff out of the way. It wasn’t five minutes before Dr Scherlag walked in, sat down and said:

You have a heart problem and I’m here into make sure you don’t die.

WTF?

I’ve been a jock most of my life. I work out, hike, play sports and keep active. I haven’t let spine surgery or replacement parts slow me down.

Dr Scherlag explained my ejection fraction should be about 55. Mine was 40. That means I’m in heart failure, probably stage three.

In a nutshell, this means my heart isn’t pumping enough blood into my body (hence the tiredness, dizzy spells and body weakness).

He told me there was some heart scaring but no evidence of a heart attack.

Right now I’m freaking out internally. Heart problem? Me?

Moving forward to today.

I’m now on major drugs to control the problem. As long as my ejection rate stays above 40, drugs, proper diet and exercise are my prescription.

If it gets below 40, it’s chest zipper time and a left ventricle bypass.

Why am I telling you this?

This is what I’ve learned.

Always tell your doctor about everything going on with your body even if it seems insignificant or you think it’s just old age.

Your life can depend on it. Mine did.

A year later I’m doing okay. So far everything is under control. I’m doing all the things I like to do.

I take my BP every day and never miss my meds. I watch what I eat. I keep my weight down. I drink lots of water. I work out daily, weights and an hour of cardio.

Mostly, I pay attention to what my body is telling me.

I don't really care what private individuals do with non-instructive garments for themselves, for sale, etc.

Not everyone's going for historical accuracy, and to me, that's okay! If you want a zipper in your corset and you're not touting it as a true representation of history, go nuts. like the stupidest pick up lines, but! they make you smile and laugh so he genuinely loves telling them just to see you happy

he walks you home everyday, gives you his VC jacket to wear too (he eyes you up a lot when you wear it)

if you ever need help with anything he is more than willing, if he sees you doing anything that you may need help with he will just wordlessly walk over and start to mimic your actions
