Buck's Baby Chapter 20 WIP
I'm actually so sad this is the final chapter of this fic, words cannot describe
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“I’m gonna take him to the shallows” Buck called out to Eddie, gesturing to the baby in his lap. Eddie sent him a thumbs up and whispered something in Christopher’s ear. Christopher turned around and sent Buck a wide grin, waving enthusiastically. Buck couldn’t help but smile and wave back before turning towards the kiddie pool. The water was lukewarm, lapping gently at his legs as he sat down, keeping Aidan in his lap and out of the water for now. The baby was looking at the shimmering light reflecting off the water’s surface with wide eyes, fascinated by the colours that danced across his face. “Alright, bud, you ready?” Buck asked Aidan softly. Aidan looked at him, eyes big and trusting and Buck’s heart flooded with love for his son. “Let’s do this” he said, voice a little surer. Buck turned Aidan so the baby’s back was pressed against his chest and gently opened his legs, allowing some of the water to spill into his lap and cover Aidan’s feet. Aidan shuddered in surprise at the sudden cool wetness and twisted to look at Buck for reassurance. “You’re okay, it’s just like the bath, see?” Buck smiled gently at the baby as he scooped up a handful of water and let it delicately drip onto Aidan’s legs. Aidan watched in wonder as the droplets of water splashed onto his skin. He stretched out a hand and scrunched up his face in delight as the water hit his palm. Buck, confident that a meltdown wasn’t imminent, gently lifted Aidan off his lap and set him down, so he was sitting between Buck’s legs, the water up to his midriff. Aidan dipped his hand into the water and giggled as tiny waves lapped over his wrist. Growing bolder, he patted the surface, face lighting up as the water splashed around him. He turned to Buck with a grin and smacked the water, jolting with surprise as his face was showered with small droplets. Buck let out snort as Aidan’s lip quivered and quickly ran a hand over Aidan’s face to dry it, fending off the incoming tantrum. “You’re okay, baby, it’s just a bit of water” he soothed, kissing Aidan’s cheeks. Reassured by his father’s touch, Aidan resumed the splashing. He chortled loudly as Buck scooped up another handful of water and drizzled it over Aidan’s head. They spent a few more minutes splashing around in the shallows, allowing Aidan to acclimate to the feeling of the water moving around him. Once Buck was sure he was comfortable, he scooped the baby out of the water and into his arms. “Right, let’s go find Papa and Eddie” he said, pepping Aidan’s face with kisses. “My brave boy”. Now that he’d had a taste of the water, Aidan was really unimpressed with Buck removing him from the pool and he made that abundantly clear as they made their way back to the main pool. Eddie, hearing Aidan’s wails, sent Buck a look of concern as he waded towards him and Christopher, Aidan sobbing miserably in Buck’s arms. “What happened, did he not like it?” Eddie asked as Buck drew nearer. Buck let out a laugh. “Nah, the opposite. He’s just mad I took him out. Watch”. Buck lowered Aidan back into the water, swaying him back and forth and instantly the crying stopped, switching to tired hiccups as he caught his breath. Christopher held out his arms for the baby. “Can I hold him please, Buck?” he asked, flashing Buck with his best puppy eyes. Eddie, who still had his arm around Christopher’s middle for stability, sent Buck a quick nod from behind Christopher’s back. “Of course, bud. Just be careful, he’s slippery” Buck replied and pushed Aidan through the water into Christopher’s awaiting arms. Aidan giggled and twisted so he was facing Christopher, patting his face with his little hands. “Tiss” he said, grinning up at his big brother. Christopher looked proudly between Buck and Eddie, his chest swelling with pride as he held the baby that had quickly become one of his favourite people. “I think he likes me” Christopher grinned up at Eddie. Eddie’s eyes softened and he pressed a kiss into Christopher’s hair. “I think he likes you too, bud”.
Your heart skipped a beat when he said your name. He walked up to you and placed a hand on your face.“Yn,”
“Billy,”
Billy leaned down and kissed you. You kissed him back. All the memories that you two shared through your years knowing each other flooded through the kiss. This kiss was familiar. It tasted of all the pain, love, memories, past that you and Billy shared. It didn’t feel right. Not anymore.
 Billy pulled away from you and placed his forehead against yours. “I’m sorry for everything,”
The creature roared which sent Billy turning to look at it. He faced you once more. “I still love you,” He said, pulling away from you and walking towards the creature.
“I love you too, Billy,”  You didn’t know if he heard you or not but you did still love him.
You watched him walk up to the Mind Flayer and stopped whatever that thing was from going towards El. The thing created more of those arm things and it stuck him in the side. Another one and another one. “BILLY!”
You heard Max yelled. You wanted to go to her but you were frozen in place as you were watching this thing killing your first love. You saw the Flayer create one more arm or whatever it was and shoot in through Billy's chest, delivering the final blow to him. You cried out for him as the Mind Flayer started dying itself. They must have closed the gate. You didn’t care about that as you ran towards Billy and Max. “Billy? Billy. Billy, Billy, get up, please. Billy, get up, please, please,”
“I'm sorry,”  Was Billy’s last words towards his sister.
“Billy Billy. Billy. Billy, wake up. Billy, get up. Please, Billy Billy! Billy Billy,”
You pulled Max into your lap and cried with her. “It’s okay. It’s okay. It’s okay,” You kept repeating through your tears.
You looked from Max and looked over at the body of your first love laying there lifeless. You couldn’t believe that he is dead. You cried out for him once more. How are you gonna tell his dad? How are you gonna tell his step mom? You heard Max start crying harder as you squeezed her tighter. “He’s free from all the pain that he was suffering from, Max. It’s okay,”
-Three months later-
Robin, you and Steve all pulled up to Family Video as Robin and Steve were trying to get a job there. You looked down at his resume. “You put your mom as a reference?”
Robin came as close as she could from the backseat. “You did not!”
“Wait? She’s a highly respectable lady in this town,” He said getting out of the car.
You and Robin both looked at each other and said in unison. “Dignus,”
You and Robin had become pretty close friends in your shared teasing of Steve since the events of what happened at the mall.
It’s been three months since the events at the mall. You all were trying to move on from it. Robin and Steve were trying to find another job. Jonathan, Will, Joyce and El were all moving to California. Hopper had died down in the secret base so El was staying with Joyce. Nancy was doing her thing, which you don’t really know. Max and you. You guys were still reeling from Billy’s death but you guys were slowly healing together. Steve knew you were still healing from it and he hasn’t pushed to talk about the kiss or how the two of you feel about each other. That’s not necessarily what you wanted but it’s exactly what you needed.
The U.S government had covered up the events as a mysterious fire that had burned the mall down and you were all forced to sign an NDA. Which was not the first one that the others had signed but the first one that you and Robin had to sign. They also said that they couldn't find any one Russian down there.
“Just to be clear, we weren't fired, you know. The mall burned down and, like, killed a bunch of people,” Robin said, trying to sell the story towards the clerk.
You were standing towards the back watching it all.
“Thanks for sharing. Didn't know. Three favorite movies. Go,”
“Uh The Apartment, Hidden Fortress, Children of Paradise,”
“You, go,”  The clerk said, looking at Steve.
Steve looked so confused. “Favorite movies?”
“Did I stutter?”
“Uh Animal House, for sure,” Steve said looking at you.
 “Eyes on me, Harrington,”
“Yeah. Uh Star Wars,”
“A New Hope?”
“A new what-now?”
“Which Star Wars?”
“The one with the teddy bears,”
“No? Uh Oh, the one that just came out. The movie that just came out. The one with the DeLorean and Alex P. Keaton, and he's trying to bang his mom. The time Yeah, those are my top three. Classics,”
You slapped your hand against your head. “You’re such an idiot, Harrington,”
The clerk looked at Robin.”You start Monday,”
“You start never,”
Robin told Steve to give them a minute to talk and he walked over and looked at all the movies. Robin lowered her voice but you could still hear what they were saying. “All right, you have to understand, Keith, I know his taste is a bit pedestrian, but the dingus has other qualities,”
“He's a douchebag of the highest order, Robin,”
“He was a bit of a prick to us in high school, I'll grant you that, but he remains a total chick magnet,”
“Yeah, okay, and this is relevant to me, how?”
“Uh, Earth to Keith. The ladies will come in just to see him. They'll come in in droves. Droves, Keith. We sold so much ice cream, they had to get a second shipment in from Michigan. Goddamn Michigan, Keith. And these ladies These ladies are hot. They're so very hot. And there are too many of them for little Steve. He needs assistance. He needs your assistance, Keith,”
“ Doesn’t Steve and that girl you came in with have the hots for each other?”
You could see Robin visibly sigh. “That’s-That’s. Girls will come flocking in regardless if he was taken or not. Don’t you know girls want what they can’t have,”
“Oh!” You heard Steve say.
You turned and saw that Steve had knocked into a cutout of a girl. “Fast Times. Fast Times. Ever heard of it? Top three for me, Keith,”
You rolled your eyes and chuckled.
“You,”
You turned your head towards Keith. “Me?”
“Yeah. Top three movies,”
“Oh uhm The Shining, Ghostbusters. E-T,”
“Interesting choices but still good. You got the job if you want,”
“I wasn-”
Steve and Robin both answered it faster than you could. “She’ll take it,”
The Lost Queen
Chapter VII
“Why aren’t you dancing?” I jump at the voice beside me.
“I’ve never danced before.”
“Well, there’s a first for everything.” Peter pulled out some kind of flute and started to play it.
I’m instantly entranced by the sound flowing out of it and I let my body relax. After a while, Alex pulls me up and makes me dance. I don’t think I’m any good at it, but he keeps encouraging me. I quickly begin to feel pain from my body and let Alex know. He leads me back to my log and sits next to me. “I have Night Duty tonight, so you will be on your own.”
“Oh, okay.” That made me worried. I don’t really trust any of the boys; especially the older ones. And any of them could easily overpower me. I hoped that I could make it through the night unharmed.
Alex must have seen my demeanor change and scooted closer. “I can ask Eli to switch with me though if you don’t want to be alone around the boys.”
I shake my head. “No, I’ll be fine.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yeah. Plus, I think I’ll have Trevor to protect me.” I joke to relieve the tension. I look back at the dancing circle to see Trevor be pushed to the ground harshly by an older boy.
“Hey! What’s wrong with you?” Surprisingly it was Alex who shouted.
“We’re just having fun.” The older boy who pushed Trevor comes up to him.
“Having fun is hunting or pulling harmless pranks on other boys. You’re just being assholes!” At this point Trevor has picked himself up and found his way over to my log.
I shift my attention to the little boy crying next to me and make sure he’s alright. “Can you tell me what hurts?” I crouch down in front of him so I can wipe away his tears. He points to his hands, knees, and head. “Come on.” I say softly. I stand up and reach down as he lifts up his arms to be picked up. I carry him around the logs and fire and into the med tent. I set him on the same bed I was sat on hours earlier.
“Okay. Can you show me again what hurts?” I take a close look at the areas that he shows me. When I get to his hands, I notice a deep splinter. “Okay, Trevor, I’m gonna get some water to clean your hands off.” He nods after I wipe away his tears again. I find a basin of water and a rag and look for some tweezers.
I finally find one in a drawer at the end of the tent. I come back and start cleaning the dirt off his hands and knees. I grab the tweezers and he becomes more upset. “Hey, what’s wrong?”
“I-I don’t l-like the p-pinchers. T-th-they hurt.” He wails.
“But you have a splinter in your hand and I have to take it out.” He shakes his head no. “Can I see your hand please?” He shakes his head no again and I set down the tweezers. “Look.” I hold up my hands to show that they are empty. “Can I see your hand now, please?” He slowly holds out his hand to me. I notice that the splinter was deeper than I thought. I am going to have to dig it out without the tweezers. “This might hurt a little bit, okay?” He just stares at me. “If I hurt you too much, just tell me and we can take a break. It is gonna have to come out though, otherwise it might get infected, and we wouldn’t want that.”
I pull my attention to his small hand and start massaging around the wood in hopes of moving it farther up. It starts to work when he tells me, “Stop!” I immediately stop and pull my hands away.
“Okay. We’re stopping.” I want to refrain from using the tweezers for as long as I can. I just want him to be comfortable and to hopefully not hate me.
Trevor gives me his hand again and I resume massaging it until he tells me to stop again. We do this again and this time I can see the tip of it starting to poke out of his skin. “Can I use the tweezers to get it out now? It is almost out and I won’t have to dig or pinch your hand.” He nods warily. “You can even watch closely if you want to.” I let him get a closer look at what I’m doing and I pull out the large splinter in one swift pull. He pulls his hand away and cradles it. All this time, he’s sobbing.
I find the stuff Jacob put on me earlier and apply it to Trevor’s hand and tie a strip of clean cloth around it to keep it clean. He kept crying in pain, which is understandable. I set down everything and give him a big hug, pulling him close enough to pick up. I prepare to pick him up with all the strength I have left, but to my surprise he is much lighter. I turn around so I am sitting on the bed with him on my lap and his arms around my neck. I gently start rocking back and forth to try and sooth the child as a commotion breaks out just outside the tent. I ignore it and focus on the boy in my arms.
I hardly notice as Peter walks in but keep my attention on Trevor who is starting to calm down. I pull Trevor away so I can look him in the eyes. “You wanna go back out?” He nods and I set him down. Both Peter and I watch as he leaves in a completely different mood. I start cleaning up and wait for Peter to either start a conversation or leave. He doesn’t do either, so I say “Don’t worry, I’m cleaning up.”
“He would have been fine.”
“Mabie. But that was a pretty deep splinter and for being such a small kid, it seems worse to him.” I don’t want to come off as being a smart-ass, so I made sure to keep my tone soft.
“He should just toughen up.”
“But he’s five and couldn’t possibly have been able to get it out on his own. The poor kid was terrified of the tweezers.”
He scoffed. “I am honestly surprised that he’s lasted this long on the island.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“Neverland inhabits monsters that will not hesitate to brutally rip you to shreds at the faintest smell of blood. They particularly like to come out at night, hence why we have night patrol.”
“Oh.” I finish cleaning up and just stand there awkwardly with Peter. “Why not try and kill them?”
“As much as I have thought about that, there is a high chance I would lose too many boys.” I look at my feet, unsure of what else to do. When I look back up, Peter is gone.
The shuffle around the palace as Loki escorts you through the front gate is overwhelming.
It’s safe to say that judging by your reception when you’d shown up in Heimdall’s tower located on the far side of the city, the Asgardians are happy to see you.
Armod is also happy to see you and you rush to get into your car before you can get swarmed by eager Asgardians.
Loki joins you in the back seat and lets Armod gush over his happiness at seeing you back home and healthy. And pregnant! More than anything, the people are happy to see the swell of your belly.
Many of the women are crying as you step out of the car at the palace gate, the men cheering enthusiastically.
Some of the children have found flower petals to throw into the air and it rains white, pink, and yellow blossoms.
It's the small waving hand of a little girl with ebony floor length braids that tugs too hard on your heartstrings and you give in to your impulse.
“Armod, stop the car, I’d like to greet the people,” you ask, swayed further by the eager faces of the young girl's siblings who flank her..
As much as being Queen had come unexpectedly and as much work as it's been, loving the Asgardians has never been a challenge and you've missed your people.
Their kindness has always been the best part of your day.
Armod gives Loki a quick look but stops the car just as the palace gates are opening.
He pulls over to the side, putting it in park before hurrying out to open the door for you.
“Are you sure?” Loki checks, reaching over to place his hand over yours on the seat.
“Of course. I owe them this. I’ve been gone for so long.”
“If you’d rather go in, we can find an excuse.”
“Loki,” you laugh once. “Is something wrong? Is there a reason I shouldn’t get out of the car?”
“Not at all,” he assures you. “I just don’t want you to force yourself. I know this pregnancy hasn’t exactly been easy on you.”
“I’m okay. And I’m sure they wanna see the proof that they have an heir coming. Really, Loki, I don't mind.”
Loki sighs, but gets out quickly to move around and take Armod’s place and offer you his arm.
Taking it, you pull yourself out, and after a long moment to steady yourself on your feet, you turn to face your people.
A large number of Valkyries suddenly pour from the open palace gateway and you wait as they line themselves in front of the gathering crowd. A simple border of control to keep you safe.
The people don’t seem threatened by the guard either and they continue to cheer until you raise your hand and call them to silence.
It only takes a few seconds for the noise to die, leaving only the ambient sounds of the city, wind, and the shuffling feet as more Asgardians and visiting humans gather.
“Hello,” you begin, voice a little shaky from nerves. “I’m...I-I’d like to start by first apologizing for disappearing. And then for being gone so long.”
The people watch and listen attentively, hanging on your every word. As your hands drop down to your belly to stroke it anxiously out of habit, their eyes are drawn to it and they seem to rattle with excitement again.
Looking down at your tummy, you contemplate the little one inside and the kicks he gave you earlier in the day.
He's really in there.
“It’s been a long journey to do what’s been expected of me. Difficult, actually. Giving you and Thor what we’ve all been hoping for is a privilege though. It's important that you all know that.
"However, I'm not as strong as all of you. I'm not as resilient. As soon as I knew that I was expecting the future prince or princess of New Asgard, I knew that I had to take precautions. I had to stop thinking like your Queen and just for a while, think like a mom. I told Thor that I wanted to take some time away from my duties as Queen if only to make sure that my pregnancy would take. In order to ensure the health of this baby.
“Im so very sorry if I caused any of you any worry or pain by disappearing. That was never my intention and it makes me...I can only say that I'm sorry. I hope that you all can understand why I left. The The thing is I’m happy to say that my efforts weren't wasted, clearly."
There's a rumble of gentle laughter that flows through the crowd and breaks the slightly somber mood your speech is causing. You give them a smile and they smile back.
"And while that does make me very happy, it has not been easy to carry this baby. I have been sick and weak but after some rest I'm now feeling stronger than ever. With the constant and careful care provided by Doctors Wilson and Alric, I’m finally able to resume my duties as Queen with the knowledge that this baby is strong and healthy and my body can take the strain of bringing him-or her into this world.
“I’m so happy to be back among my people, my home. You all are my family and it fills me with such joy to know that I have made you all proud.”
The people cheer, more and more gathering along the street so that it’s now clogged and impassable. Others have taken to peeking out of windows from the surrounding buildings or finding balconies and roofs to stand on to get a better look at you.
Their excitement changes to trepidation at the look on your face as you realize that now is the perfect time to address what happened yesterday.
They’re so attuned to your mood that they quiet down again and wait nervously for you to speak.
"On a more serious note, I know that many of you must have been shocked by the lies spewed onto the pages of the Watch. And I'd like to be as clear as I possibly can about my absence from the palace.
"I only left because of the concern I had for our future prince or princess. There was absolutely no other reason for my absence in our great city. While it is true that something did happen between Thor, Jane, and myself--well, I will only say that now I know that His Majesty the King of Asgard is wholly devoted to me and our family, just as he has been from the moment he accepted me as his wife.
"Not that I ever doubted it," you lie. No one needs to know how bad things are and it is true that now you know Thor is devoted to you.
So, it's not completely a lie.
"As a people," you continue. "We'll need to be vigilant about the people we choose to trust to come into our homes. We will be more cautious now, and as a woman…"
You swallow hard, thinking about the words itching on the tip of your tongue to tumble forward and make your heart clear. Maybe it's not right to say it? Maybe it isn't the queenly thing to do?
You don't care.
"As a wife and a soon-to-be mother, I will say that Doctor Jane Foster is not welcome in my home. She has proven to be unworthy of the trust we placed in her and while her expertise is an invaluable commodity that I am sad to lose, I would rather have the second best than risk the stability of my family."
To your surprise, there are a flutter of approving nods and smiles, wives and husband's looking scandalized by the confirmation that something went down but clearly it was Thor that had Jane kicked out. A few cheers come but they quiet down quickly.
"My love for His Majesty is unwavering. As is his for me. No marriage can be without it's struggles but Thor and I are as united as we have ever been. Both in love, devotion, to each other and you, our people. Together we will strive to protect this kingdom to the best of our abilities and with this child, I hope we can begin to lay down proper roots for us so that everyone on Earth will know that New Asgard is here to stay."
The crowd cheers. It's deafening and your hands are trembling so terribly even clenched into fists they shake.
"LONG LIVE THE QUEEN!" someone shouts and the others fall into the chant as it's picked up by what sounds like everyone in the crowd.
A cool hand presses against the center of your back and you lean towards him as he whispers in your ear.
"That was beautifully done, Y/N," Loki admires. "Now come along. You need your rest."
You cradle your bump and the crowd cheers louder as you wave while Loki leads you back into the car.
As it pulls away from the curb, the Valkyrie turn to follow behind you. Faces full of stern pride. Their gleaming armor shining bright in the late afternoon sun.
The large wooden and steel reinforced gates of the palace close with a thundering clatter and you lean back, heart suddenly clenching painfully. Your stomach turns and you feel like you might throw up.
You shut your eyes and open the window allowing the cooling air to help drive your nausea away.
"Y/N? You alright?" Loki checks, putting his hand on your arm.
"I'm fine," you assure him, unwilling to open your eyes.
"Are you sure? Only, you're looking a little green."
That doesn't actually happen does it? Do people look green when they're gonna throw up?
You assume he's exaggerating, but as the last bit of the swirl in your belly passes, you look at him with fearful eyes.
"I'm nervous," you admit.
"To see Thor?"
"Mm," you nod.
"He's missed you. He will probably try and hug you. Might even kiss you."
"I don't know if I can handle that, Loki."
"You'll have to. The guards around the palace are sworn to secrecy about anything that happens in here, but with the amount of information that magazine was able to get we're pretty sure there's a mole amongst our number."
You look away from him, frowning because the last thing you want is to hug and kiss Thor.
Well, that is, you really want to do those things. Which is why you shouldn't. Not until you can be around him with some kind of rational thought and control over your feelings.
You need to get a grip and come to terms with the reality of your situation before you can let yourself love hum.
You have to protect yourself.
It turns out that you have nothing to worry about.
Estrid who had come before you with your things is there to greet you. A few others of the palace staff come to see you and you're welcome back with fondness.
Because you know you have to play the part, you look for him.
"His Majesty had a sudden summons from the Lady Sif and the Warriors Three, my Queen. He apologizes for missing your arrival but he's had the small dining room filled with all of your favorites.
"When you are finished with dinner, he has asked that you wait for him in his study."
Estrid's tone tells you she's wary for you. She wants to make sure you're okay.
The disappointment you feel gives you away not only to yourself, but everyone there to see your face fall as you caress your belly.
"A blessing in disguise?" Loki suggests in your ear for just you, but the smile on his lips says he knows better.
"He'll be back before it gets too late, Your Majesty," Estrid assures you, trying to soothe your sadness. "He promised. There’s nothing more he wants than to see you."
"I know," you smile at her, then the others before you head for the dining room, your stomach grumbling in anticipation of the foods you know are waiting.
~~~~~~~~~~
Waiting is torture. You keep trying to read your book but your attention is pulled back to the door of Thor’s study every few seconds.
You groan, dropping the book onto the desk before throwing your head back with scrunched up eyes.
How is it possible to be desperate to see someone while also dreading it?
It feels like you'll die if you don't lay eyes on Thor but also like it'll tear you to shreds if you do. There's no winning here.
You gasp as the door opens and get to your feet in the same breath.
Thor's body is rising and falling heavily with his own labored breathing. He'd been running.
To get to you? No. You can't be swayed.
"I'm here."
His declaration is soft but heavy with meaning. More than just him announcing his arrival.
"Oh, aren't you a vision," he gushes.
"Hi," you whisper, only because you can't catch your breath.
He's wearing jeans, a plain black t-shirt stretched across his bulging chest. He's even more massive than you remember. Three months away has deprived you so fully that suddenly being in his presence leaves you hungry for him.
You want him so much.
"I've missed you, desperately," he confesses. "May I greet you properly?"
You frown, so undecided.
"Or not," Thor relents. "Forgive me, I just got caught up in the moment."
Why is this so hard?
You want to feel him.
"You can greet our baby properly," you give in.
A big part of you needs to feel him and this is the only way you can give in and feel like you're still doing your best to hold strong in your resolve to get some distance.
Thor’s eye lights up and quickly finds the swell of your tummy with recognition.
"Really?"
"I will never keep you from our baby, Thor. Even if I'm not ready for things to go back to normal between us just yet."
Thor takes a half step towards you and watches you carefully for any indication that you're not comfortable with his proximity.
You sigh, head tilted to the left slightly before you hold out your hand to him, beckoning him closer.
In three long strides Thor takes your hand and stops when he's only a foot away.
"Here," you gasp.
Your heart is in overdrive. Thor’s touch is doing things to your body. There's an initial rush of butterflies in your stomach and quickly you pull Thor’s hands to the spots where your baby is kicking in response.
Thor’s body freezes. He goes rigid. He even stops breathing.
For a moment you begin to worry that maybe you've broken him, until he suddenly drops to his knees.
He swallows hard, eyes pooling as he stares at the swell of your stomach as the baby continues to kick.
“They’re really in there,” he’s so choked up about it that his voice cracks around the words.
As he speaks, the baby kicks more.
Thor laughs but then leans in to kiss your stomach over the fabric of your dress.
“We really made her,” Thor gushes.
“Her?”
He looks up at you, confused for a second before he smiles wide, “Or him. It doesn’t matter. What matters is our baby is coming.”
Your heart swells, and you’re so happy that you could float away like a hot air balloon with the warmth flooding your limbs.
This is the moment you’d dreamt of. This is the moment that had been stolen from you by Jane and her lies. This is the moment that you and Thor had both been yearning for.
He’s so caught up in it, floating through the glow of this perfect moment that he presses his lips to your tummy again two more times before he’s rising, his hand hooked behind your neck as he meets your lips as he gets to his feet.
You’re so unprepared for it, so utterly lost in this sweet exchange between him and your baby that your lips pucker on their own.
He opens his eye and yours, already open, stare into his. He looks slightly shocked to find himself kissing you but he doesn’t stop.
Instead, his expression shifts into a pained look of desire. He pulls back, his hand dropping to grip your bicep.
“I would say that I’m sorry but I have been wanting to kiss you since the moment I left you three months ago.”
You say nothing, watching him, listening. You’re searching your soul to see if this is okay with you because it feels okay. Despite the sirens blaring in your mind about the restrictions you’d set for yourself when you’d decided to come back home, your body is telling you it needs this. Your heart is painfully aching at Thor’s touch.
You’ve missed it. You’ve missed him.
“Is this alright? I can go.”
The idea of him going now feels like the end of the world. Rationally, you know that isn’t an appropriate response to his offering to leave you be, especially when you know you asked him for space for specific reasons.
“No,” your hands grip the sides of his t-shirt tightly, holding him in place without any actual strength since compared to him, you’re as mighty as a little mouse.
You refuse to look up at him, despite the crumbling of your resolve.
“No, don’t go.”
It’s an almost involuntary shy response to your diminishing shame at losing all control after his touch. After one kiss. You should be disappointed in yourself. And part of you is. However, that part of you grows increasingly small as Thor gently takes hold of your chin and guides your gaze up until you can meet his.
“I’m sorry, cherub. I will try and be worthy of you again.”
“I know,” you admit, knowing how sorry he’s been from the moment he realized that he’d done something that hurt you badly. “I know you are.”
“Can I kiss you, cherub?”
His voice is so deep, so alluring and coaxing that you drop your gaze again, fixing it on his collarbone before slowly you nod.
His arm winds its way around your waist and he pulls you to him before dipping down and catching your lips with his again.
He pulls away after a second because the swell of your belly gets in the way, but he laughs and looks down at it.
The pleasant sound of his happiness gives you too much joy.
As you begin to smile, Thor reaches down to press one hand to the side of your stomach while he pulls you against him again and kisses you this time with more fervor.
The longer he has his lips pressed to yours, the more enthusiastic he gets until finally you’re breathless and you pull back but instead of pulling away, you wrap your arms around him and fist the back of his t-shirt,
You bury your face against his wide chest and Thor brings his hands back up to caress the sides of your face, his lips kissing the top of your head.
“I know I may not have a right to say this, but thank you for coming home. Thank you for coming back to me. I thought I’d lost you."
His arms grow a little tighter, his heart is in an absolute stampede.
You turn your head sideways so that you can listen to his heartbeat.
"This is what I'd wanted," you whimper, starting to be overcome with the emotion of being reunited with Thor and things falling into place more easily. "This is how I'd wanted us to share this moment."
Thor sighs heavily, giving you one more squeeze before he pushes you back a little so that he can look at you.
“I’m so sorry that I robbed you of that. I was a fool,” he nods, his eye intense as he stares into yours with wordless declarations piercing into you.
The memory of your speech with the people when you arrived pops into your head and now with Thor’s arms around you it all feels a little like an overreaction. The past three months feels like a distant nightmare.
Or does this feel like a dream?
“Thor,” you begin but Thor’s lips are on you again, drowning out your words.
“Oh, to hear you say my name,” he declares and kisses you again.
Your mouth opens for him and you absolutely melt against his chest as he nearly dips you in passion.
He pulls back again, “Is this real?”
He kisses you.
“You feel so good in my arms.”
He kisses you.
“Your skin is so…” but then he hums and kisses you.
He dips down and with his arms tight around your waist but also careful with the swell of your stomach, he lifts you so that you’re level with his eye.
“I love you, so much, my cherub. Thank you, thank you for coming home. Thank you.”
“I’m sorry I stayed away,” you sigh. “I need to be strong without you, Thor. I was hurt but I never stopped loving you.”
His face goes through shame, understanding, and then elation.
In a burst of subdued anger and aggression for what he put you through, you reach up and grab his shoulder. You dig your fingers in against the taut muscle then reach up to pull one of his ears.
You’re clearly not hurting him but he allows you to move his head, understanding the need to express your anger even if you’re not doing any damage.
“Never do that to me again,” you growl. “Never say that you’ll leave me. Why would you say that? Even in passing? You were so damn sure.”
“No, Y/N, I wasn’t. The moment I saw you, I knew that I could never leave you. I’m sorry. I could never even think those thoughts again.”
“You better not, or I won’t come back next time. I’ll disappear and you’ll never see me again.”
Thor takes your threat for what it is. A promise. Truth.
He shakes his head as he leans forward to press his forehead to yours, shutting his eye.
“I swear,” he begins. “On my life.”
He keeps you there, hovering over the ground with your heads together for a few minutes before he slowly lowers you to the ground. You realize it’s because he wants to stroke your belly and you take a slight step back so that he can.
He smiles, happy. It reminds you of the look your people had when you’d arrived only a hundred times as possessive and joyful.
Again, your speech intrudes on your reunion and this time, you won’t let him distract you.
“Thor,” you coax, placing your hands over his where they rest on the sides of your stomach.
“Yes, my cherub?”
He’s excessive in the affection he puts in his voice but you know that he must be floating on cloud nine after what you both went through when you made him leave you at your house.
“I-I did something and I’m not sure if it was right of me to do it,” you watch his brow wrinkle and for a split second you almost lose yourself in the beauty of his face.
Has he always been this handsome?
“When I got back I kinda made a speech? Everyone was so happy to see me and to see me carrying our heir and I wanted to apologize to them for leaving and for making them worry. I wanted to share in their excitement for the baby and with that stupid tabloid having come out yesterday-”
“Right, the article,” there’s guilt in his voice despite there being no truth to the rumors it printed.
“I wanted to put their minds at ease and I...I did confirm that something happened with Jane but not what they were thinking.”
Thor’s expression hardens just a tad and he pulls backs towards a large armchair. He grabs your hand though and pulls you along with him until he can sit and then carefully attempts to offer you his lap, unsure if you’ll sit.
You do, because you’re tired and because you’re not eager to be away from him again. Now that you’re touching him, you’re not in a hurry to change that again.
“What did you say exactly?”
Swallowing hard, you lick your lips nervously, “Um...I told them the truth. Not exactly the truth, but enough of it that they’ll understand that Jane isn’t welcome here. I said that the only reason I left is for my health and the health of the baby, which is true. I didn’t want them to worry about us because even if we didn’t reconcile, I want us to be united for them at least.
“But I don’t trust Jane, Thor. Not after what she did. Not after how she treated me when you weren’t looking, and the people need to know that I will protect them from anyone, no matter who they are to you or me.”
Thor’s face grows pained as you speak, his arm wrapping around your waist as his other hand caresses the side of your stomach. You’re starting to realize that it’s going to be hard to get his hands off it, but that doesn’t seem like a terrible problem.
“I wish you had told me that she’d been rude to you,” Thor sighs, taking his hand off of his stomach to stroke your cheek. “If I had known-”
“She wasn’t rude to me Thor, she dismissed me. I wasn’t even worth acknowledging to her and now I know it’s because she was jealous and wanted you back because what? She saw what we had together and suddenly it was good enough for her?
“I was in her way. That’s all I was. Even if in the end she couldn’t go through with it whether it was because she felt guilty for doing this to us or for lying or for having second thoughts and knowing that she doesn’t want to be Queen or a mom, she’s a bad person to me. And I have every right to protect myself, my baby, and our marriage from her. She’s not welcome here Thor. I never want to see her again. Ever.”
He’s cradling you now, holding you close because the intensity with which you're telling him that Jane is not welcome in your home is transferring to him.
“And if you’d known, you wouldn’t have done anything, Thor. You’d probably have talked to her and asked her what was going on and she would have lied to you and you would have believed her.”
He doesn’t deny it. He does look like it hurts him to know that you know though. That’s enough for you.
“I think it took her lying and doing this to us to make you see what she’s capable of.”
Thor shuts his eye, resting his head against your chest as he wraps his arms around you again.
“I’m sorry.”
“I know you are, Thor. But you weren’t the one who lied. I mean, you didn’t tell me what was happening, but you weren’t the reason that this happened. If Jane hadn’t lied-”
“But she did,” Thor says, his deep voice anguished. “And I failed to honor my vows. You are my Queen and I should have come to you the moment she told me she was pregnant.”
You both fall into silence as you reach over to stroke his bicep. His skin is so soft. Touching it gives you comfort in a way you weren’t aware you needed. The more you touch it the more you need to feel it.
A finger stroking his skin turns into two, then four, then your entire hand is running up under the sleeve of his t-shirt.
With the way his hand curls around your thigh, you know that both your bodies are responding to your touch. Both of you are heated but instead of giving into that because you aren’t ready for that yet, you lay your head on his shoulder and curl in closer to his chest.
Thor sighs heavily, wrapping you up in his arms as he cradles you close.
“Now we know better,” you whisper.
“Now I know what losing you will do to me,” Thor agrees. “I’ve missed you so much, cherub.”
You don’t respond. You’re too choked up to say anything without your voice cracking so both of you stay like that for a while.
The cocoon of Thor’s arms is toasty and from the exhaustion you’re feeling plus all of the emotions that have drained you, your eyes are heavy and difficult to keep open.
“What about you?”
Thor’s chest rumbles with a chuckle.
“We can talk more tomorrow, cherub. Sleep.”
“I’m not sleepy,” you lie.
“Very well, then. What about me?”
“You’re sleepy?” you look up at him, full of concern.
He chuckles again, “No, cherub. What were you asking?”
“Oh! I just wanted to know if you’re okay. What Jane did to you can’t have been easy. Despite what she did to us as a couple, she said she was pregnant. You’ve been wanting a baby for so long and she dangled that in front of you like the rat that she is. And then she wasn’t even pregnant?”
Thor’s arms constrict around you as he pulls you up towards him to kiss you.
It’s slow and full of emotion.
“Even after all of that, you’re still worried about me?”
“It took time,” you admit. “Once I wasn’t so angry and I thought about what Jane really did. I hate the idea that your heart broke over her lies. I can’t believe she ever loved you if she was willing to make you feel that way.”
Thor just stares at you, searching your eyes before he rubs his nose gently against your own. When he speaks, his voice is so low, so deep, an intimate whisper. It burrows into your chest and settles right there underneath your ribs and makes you breathless with missing him and desire.
“That’s why you’re my Queen, Y/N. And she is not.”
You’re not sure if it’s an Asgardian ability or if maybe it’s something specific to Thor, but he has a way of making you swoon.
“I missed you so much,” he confesses again, that whisper sinful. “Did you not miss me?”
You nod because you can’t speak. There’s a lump in your throat made of both sadness and want.
“Was your bed as frigid as mine was in your absence? Did you miss my breath on your neck as I did yours? Or the steady beat of your heart when you pressed your breast to my back as you held me while I slept?”
Fuck, he’s making this so impossible.
“I hate you so much,” you counter, but his lips stretch into a small knowing smile as you take a tight hold of the neck of his shirt and pull him up to meet your lips.
He exhales heavily into you, tasting you, relishing in every pulsating touch as both your hearts ache and yearn almost in disbelief as if both of you can’t believe that these wants, these needs are finally being met.
As he pulls back to tilt his head the other way, he takes hold of the sides of your face again, his lips grazing yours, “I love you.”
Before you can reply or yank him back into that torturous yet blissful kiss, a voice at the doorway clears their throat.
“Well, that was fast, what happened to keeping him at a distance?”
Loki’s voice pulls your gaze and you can feel your cheeks and neck burn at how easily it seems you’ve crumbled when finally face to face with Thor.
You frown at your brother-in-law, while Thor ignores his brother and leans up to press very non-chaste kisses to your neck, “I told you coming back was a bad idea.”
But Loki’s smile is blinding and with one chuckle he backs out of the room, shutting the door quietly as Thor turns you back to him so that he can get back to kissing you.

Nesta was out with Elain, Mor, Emerie, Amren, and Gwen for the night.
She had no idea when she’d be home.
This meant one thing and one thing only.
It was Cassian’s first night alone with Nyx.
It was no different than being home alone with Nyx during the day, which Cassian had been a handful of times thus far. However, Nyx didn’t seem to need as much during the day.
Eat, sleep, play, repeat.
At night, he needed a dinner, a bath, his bottle, to be rocked, to be put down for the night…which was something he never liked doing. A daytime nap? He didn’t mind. Sleeping for nine hours? Apparently that thought just pissed him off.
Nesta was a pro at getting him to sleep for the night. Cassian had offered once to do it and failed miserably.
“Not tonight, little man,” Cassian said to Nyx as they sat at the dinner table together. “Tonight, you’re going to bed the first time for Uncle Cassian.”
Nyx looked at Cassian and giggled.
Cassian scoffed. “Don’t mock me.”
Dinner with Cassian meant Nyx got the good shit. No puréed green beans or mashed carrots tonight. After he’d polished off a small jar of the cinnamon apples, Nyx had eaten nearly half a tube of puréed sweet potato, and Cassian was eating his own food. He took a bite of supreme pizza and pointed at him, before holding up a single finger. “After this, we’re gonna take a bath, and you aren’t going to throw water everywhere or poop in the tub, got it?”
Nyx just banged his little hand on the tray of his high chair, causing more sweet potato to fly onto himself, grinning up at Cassian.
“Then one last bottle before bed, while I read you a story,” he said, holding up a second finger. “I’m sure there will be a diaper change in there somewhere, so please go easy on me, yeah?”
Nyx played in the mess of mixed food in front of him.
“And then you go to bed, so I can watch a movie and pass out myself, and boom. Nesta can’t say anything about my parenting anymore cause I managed to keep you alive for a whole night.
Nyx blew a raspberry at him before he started babbling.
Cassian took that as agreement.
“Perfect,” Cassian said, ruffling Nyx’s dark hair as he shoved the rest of the pizza into his mouth with his other hand.
He got up to clear his plate, and by the time he went back to Nyx’s high chair, he had managed to make orange streaks in his black hair.
Courtesy of the sweet potatoes.
With a sigh, Cassian took the tray off the high chair and unbuckled Nyx, picking him up and carrying him toward the bath.
“You first, tray second,” Cassian said.
Nyx started patting his little potato covered hands on Cassian’s cheeks, giggling at the sound it made.
Cassian cringed at the way it felt. “Thanks for that.”
He filled the bathtub up, ensuring it wasn’t too hot, like Nesta had shown him, and got Nyx out of his messy clothes and into the tub. After he’d wiped his own face clean of sweet potato, he went to work on Nyx, who had somehow managed to get it on the back of his knees.
Twenty minutes and a full change of wet, soggy clothes later for Cassian, he was sitting in Nyx’s nursery, in the rocking chair in the corner, a book open in his lap.
“This would be a book your parents bought you,” he muttered, opening the front cover. After clearing his throat, he began, “The night sky of Velaris greeted all the townspeople, letting them know it was time to go to bed.” Nyx patted the page and babbled something incoherent. Cassian nodded. “Yeah, it’s a nice picture, isn’t it?” He went on reading the story, written by a local author, no doubt, and Cassian found himself snorting at some of the sentences, but Nyx was fully engaged.
By the time he had finished the book, Nyx was leaning back against him, fully relaxed in his pajamas.
Even Cassian let out a yawn.
“You know, the Velaris starlight was important to your parents,” Cassian said, rocking Nyx back and forth. “They fell in love on Starfall. At least, that’s what Rhys always said. He was in love with your mama long before that, but she started falling for him on Starfall.” Nyx’s dark lashes began to fall, his eyelids drooping. “That’s why they named you Nyx. In Greek, Nyx means night.”
Nyx’s hand gripped Cassian’s thumb. He looked down at the sight and chuckled, quietly.
The baby looked up at him then, with those big, blue eyes, eyes that were so blue, they looked violet in the dark. That dark hair that was starting to need a trim, falling into his eyes. Cassian blinked quickly, trying to keep the sudden tears from spilling over. “You look so much like your dad,” he whispered.
Nyx just continued to watch him, pacifier in his mouth, those eyes getting sleepier with every rock of the chair.
Swallowing harshly, Cass set the book down and resituated Nyx so he was laying against his chest. He gently rubbed his back, the way he saw Nesta do when he would get fussy.
“I miss your dad,” he said, softly. “I know you do, too, you’ve known him your whole life, but—. But so have I. And after twenty-eight years he’s just…gone.”
That dark head snuggled in closer against him, one of his little hands clutching Cassian’s t-shirt.
Cassian said nothing else. If he had, he wouldn’t have gotten them out clearly.
He rocked. He rocked and he rocked and he rocked until Nyx was snoring, softly. As carefully as he could, Cassian rose and laid Nyx down in his crib.
After waiting a moment to make sure he didn’t wake up, Cassian tiptoed out of the room and across the hall to his own bedroom.
He had just laid down and unlocked his phone when he heard crying.
Tossing his phone back on his pillow, Cassian was instantly up, hurrying back across the hall. Nyx’s feet were kicking, his arms waving wildly, perfectly unhappy.
“What’s going on?” Cassian asked, picking the baby up out of the crib and cradling him against his chest. “Huh? You were sleeping so nicely.”
He continued to cry, and no amount of bouncing or patting his back was seeming to work.
“Come on, dude,” he muttered, sitting back down in the rocker. He resumed the slow back and forth motion, praying it would soothe Nyx back into peaceful sleep. “We did the bath. We did the bottle. We did the book. This is when you go to sleep.”
He kept crying and Cassian just shushed him quietly, his hand resuming the gentle rubbing he had done before. It helped, but Nyx still sniffled. “I don’t know what to do,” he admitted. “I don’t know how to do any of this. I’m still scared I’m gonna do something to fuck up and I wouldn’t just be doing it to you, it’d be to Rhys, too.”
Nyx’s wailing returned, and Cassian tried to close his eyes and take deep breaths. It wasn’t working. With everything he tried, Nyx only cried more and more and more.
“Come on, buddy,” he begged. “It’s time for bed, alright? It’s time to calm down.” Nyx let out a cry so loud that Cassian nearly jumped, which only scared Nyx, making him cry louder.
Cassian tried changing his diaper, tried getting him to take his pacifier, but nothing helped. He continued to rock, continued to pat, continued to walk Nyx around his room, but nothing worked.
Nothing.
Defeated, Cassian laid Nyx back down in his crib. “Come on, bud. Come on.”
Nyx kept crying, and Cassian rubbed his temples, trying not to join his nephew in his agony.
“Shhhhhh,” Cassian began, leaning over the crib, patting Nyx’s stomach. “It’s time for bed, Nyx. It’s time for bed. If your parents were here right now, I’m sure you’d already be asleep. Shit, if Nesta were here, you’d already be asleep.” He shook his head. “It’s me, isn’t it?”
The baby replied by continuing to cry.
He swore quietly, and hurried across the hall grabbing his phone, dialing a number he’d unknowingly memorized. She answered on the second ring.
“Is everything okay?”
He couldn’t hear music and laughter in the background of the call, but heard how panicked her voice was. She must have stepped away from her friends. It only made him feel that much worse.
“I can’t get him to stop crying and go to sleep,” he admitted. “I don’t know what else to try.”
“You gave him his bottle?” She asked, and he nodded. Then audibly answered her. After that, she ticked off the checklist of things she usually went through. Every single one he’d already tried.
“It’s like it’s just me,” he said, trying to calm him down while he held the phone to his ear. He scooped him up into his arms and sat down in the rocking chair. “He hates me and won’t go to sleep.”
She was quiet for a minute. “You know that’s not true, Cassian. He loves you.”
“I don’t know what I’m doing,” he said, quietly, low enough that he wasn’t sure if the receiver could pick it up over Nyx’s wailing.
But it didn’t matter, because he heard footsteps hurrying up the stairs.
When Nesta rounded the corner, she wasn’t expecting to find Cassian looking defeated in the rocking chair. She pretended not to see the tears on his handsome face as she dropped her purse by the door of the nursery and took Nyx. She began to soothe him and tried to give him back his pacifier, but he wouldn’t take it.
“He’s cutting a new tooth,” Nesta said, carefully looking into his mouth, wide open thanks to a drawn out sob. “That’s all. He’s just uncomfortable, isn’t he?”
By the end of the sentence she was looking at Nyx, an over-exaggerated frown on her face.
She handed him back to Cassian and was downstairs and back with cooling, teething toy she’d pulled out of the freezer. He began to chew and gnaw on it the moment she handed it to him.
The crying quieted.
“There,” she said, smoothing his dark hair back from his forehead. “Better, yeah?”
Taking him from Cassian who hadn’t said a word since she walked in, she put him back into his crib and gently rubbed his belly. Within minutes, he was asleep again.
He murmured, “Thanks. You…didn’t have to end your night early for me.” He gestured toward the front door. “You can head back out. I can— I can handle it now.”
She shook her head. “I was on the way home. Turns out I wasn’t really in the going out mood.”
Cassian nodded, and said no more. He simply watched Nyx, his chest rising and falling. Nesta gave him a curt nod and walked out, back into the hall.
Cassian followed, shutting the nursery door quietly behind him.
“You did that so effortlessly.”
Nesta stopped and turned to face him near her bedroom, a brow raised. “Effortlessly?”
“I’ve been struggling for hours and you came in, and less than five minutes… He was out.” Cassian shook his head. “I’ve known him since the day he was born and I had no idea what he wanted.”
“He’s a baby, Cassian. He doesn’t even know what he wanted.”
“You knew,” he said, exasperated, exhausted.
She blinked, not expecting the tone of his voice to have sounded so…empty.
“Hey, it’s okay,” Nesta said, looking at him, willing him to meet her eyes. He didn’t look up.
“It’s not okay,” he said, and suddenly his words were sharp. “Rhys trusted me to take care of him but I don’t know what the fuck I’m doing.”
She shook her head. “They trusted us, but they knew it wouldn’t be easy. We knew it wouldn’t be easy. We just have to take it day by day and-.”
“It’s not okay!” His words weren’t loud but they were panicked. “I have to provide for him and I can’t fucking do it if I don’t know what he needs.”
“Cassian-.”
“Why would they choose me?” He asked, his voice quiet. Tears filled his eyes. He hated himself for it. “I never even wanted kids! I have no idea what to do with a kid, Nesta. I don’t know what parents are supposed to do, what dads are supposed to do, I didn’t even fucking have one.”
Nesta remained quiet, afraid to speak, afraid to move. She had never seen Cassian like this.
She didn’t think anyone had ever seen Cassian like this.
“I don’t know what to do, I don’t know how to do this,” he repeated. “I can’t— I can’t do this.”
She knew her words would mean nothing, reassuring him that he wasn’t alone in this, that they would figure it out together. It wouldn’t help him, wouldn’t ease his mind or his heart. That heart that was still broken from the loss of his best friend, his brother. So she did something she never thought she’d do.
She closed the space between them and wrapped her arms around him.
Cassian didn’t move for a moment, he just let her slim arms wrap around his waist, not realizing that he was on the brink of losing it. He was fairly sure that right now, she was the only thing holding him together, both mentally and physically. But after a long minute, his own arms wrapped around her shoulder and he buried his face into the top of her hair. He didn’t care that his tears were soaking her hair, didn’t care that this was the woman he’d spent the past five years hating and avoiding like she was the damn plague.
He didn’t care that he was falling to pieces.
Standing in that hallway, with Nyx sleeping behind the closed bedroom door, Cassian wept, and he didn’t care who saw it.

He woke up again on a plush bed after sleeping comfortably, his cheek slightly bruised and a dull pain running through it, he placed his hand on it and nothing felt swollen which was a very good sign. He let out a sigh and moved up to his elbows so he could look around.
It was different from all the other rooms he’d been in, It had more color, drawings all the walls.. Comfort stuffed animals they sometimes give you at the hospital even bigger stuffed animals.. The room was comfortable..
He finally looked next to him and on the floor was Y/N, who was listening to music occasionally flinching from the headphones as she colored in a little book. He didn’t wanna disrupt the girl, so he sat up and carefully grabbed his clipboard looking for her file…

(Danger level) 9/10
Izuku raised an eyebrow, the description of the person sitting down in front of him.He felt like it didn’t match her at all. He decided to take a gentle approach to greeting Y/N to make sure she didn’t have an “episode” as the paper put it.
He gently swung his feet over the side and crouched down hoping to get into her sightline. He crawled to sit in front of her placing his hands on the floor in front of her coloring book.
Y/N looked up, slightly startled but then took her headphones off, the change causing her head to spasm backwards before resuming her normal position. “Hi!” They smiled, placing her hands on the coloring book in front of Izuku’s. “Hi, Y/N right?” He spoke calmly, not wanting to put off the human infront of him. “Yeah! And you are...Izuku? Midoryia?” She tilted her head curiously and smiled, pumping a fist into the air when Midoryia nodded a smile being brought to his own lips. He was absolutely hooked by Y/N. Their backstory, their personality, they were such an interesting person and he couldn’t wait to learn more.
“Yeah. You got it right, good job.” he chuckled when her cheeks turned pink with embarrassment from his praise. Izuku chuckled again and leaned forward slightly and watched as Y/N leaned back.
Izuku shook his hands carefully and leaned back “Is this more comfortable?” Y/N nodded and smiled softly leaning forward again to resume coloring. Izuku smiled and decided to just watch her for a few moments.
The two hung out not moving position for at least half an hour, until Y/N looked towards the door and started cowering when the door opened and the men in white stood there with a medical tray full of many medical instruments he'd never seen before.
Y/N jumped to their feet and tried to hide behind Izuku as one of them said “Y/N, Please I don’t want to have to repeat what happened yesterday.” He went to reach for her but she smacked his hand and continued standing behind Midoryia who was eyeing the men with a suspicious look.
The blonde one who had spoke already finally went to grab them only to have his hands smacked away, but instead of a hand, he felt a clipboard against his wrist as he cried out “what THE-” the man went to hit Izuku but the greenette had blocked his second hit as well
“She’s scared. I’m going to have to ask you to leave because you are not helping.” Izuku’s tone held dominance and authority as the man scoffed “Oh really?-” His words were cut short as Y/N lept towards him and started hitting him.
she had gotten a few punches in before Izuku had interfered and pulled her back and away from him holding them, they cling to him. “She’s just psycho-” he started again but was cut off by Midoryia straight up shoving him out of the door
Midoryia had shut the door and looked at the medical supplies and then at Y/N who was back on their bed. Midoryia hummed softly looking at them with a soft but concerned gazed “Are you alright?” They nodded timidly “U-um.. yeah, i think..”
They kept eyeing the cart and rubbing their arms. Izuku was angry beyond belief but kept his cool for Y/N. “Do you know what these are?” he asked as he walked over to the cart. Y/N nodded “Those are what the use to sedate me and give me my medications..” Izuku nodded and looked at the cart, it had 4 different pills, a tiny box of apple juice and a needle filled with a liquid. He picked up the needle and watched Y/N flinch back
Izuku shook his head “No, no.. i’m gonna dispose of it, not use it okay?” He went and wrapped it up throwing it in the hazard trash can in the bathroom coming back out looking at the cart.
“Okay, do you have an order you need to take them in or can you just take them one at a time?”
Y/N looked confused as they stood up walking to Izuku and the cart “I c-can just take them.. why are you helping? aren’t you supposed to..”
Izuku shook his head “So far all of you have said that… No, i’m not supposed to be mean, i’m supposed to help you get better so can you take..” he handed Y/N two of the four pills and handed her the apple juice “these and then the other ones?” he smiled
Y/N nodded and took the two and then waited 30 seconds before taking the other two. Izuku nodded and smiled “Thank you.. Now I believe” He stopped and checked his watch “It’s almost dinner time, If you want you can go head down to the cafeteria?” He smiled at her
Y/N thought for a moment “Will you come eat with me?” She tapped her foot on the ground and looked away as Izuku chuckled
 “It’s not my dinner break,” Y/N had frowned and got ready to ask again.
“but I’ll still come sit with you?” Izuku smiled when Y/N’s face lit up
Y/N gave a big smile and nodded “Okay!” they had opened the door and ran out with an excited yell of “KATSU! TODO! SHIN!” as she catapulted herself into the boys arms as they hugged her back.
“Why don’t you go to the cafeteria and We’ll be right behind you okay?” Shinsou spoke caring and calmly and all three boys had a quirk of a smile as she smiled and ran off down the halls “GOT IT!” you could hear their laughter as they went down the stairs with a much kinder doctor.
As Izuku walked out of the door locking it behind him he was quickly met with the three faces he’s seen previously looking at him with glares. He gulped before speaking in a meek voice “Y-yes?” Bakugou raised an eyebrow and scoffed before nodding at him “Not a bad idiot.” and the other two nodding in agreement before the bell above them rang for dinner.

a/n: I’m so sorry for getting this out so late! I’ve been very busy recently and I’ve been preparing for BIG things in my personal life so chapters may be extremely short or non existent. I also didn’t plan to have so many supporters for this series so i didn’t really have a clue what to do with the story. I still don’t. I have one more chapter ready in my head but after that I’m not sure where this series will go. Anyways, as usual I hope you enjoyed and please feel free to reblog, like or say something in my inbox! I’m open to writing one shots if you guys are interested, I was thinking about writing one shots instead of continuing with actual chapters after chapter 6

Rafael went to his car and began to think. He had to trust you would listen to what you said, if you loved him like he loved you, you would. But the thought that terrified him more than losing you right now was that William Lewis was back, and on the loose. He dialed Liv’s number as he sped back towards New York City.
“Liv,” He said very seriously as soon as she answered. “He’s back. Lewis is back,”
Meanwhile
You started to pull yourself together when you heard a small noise from the corner of the room. You saw Maggie standing there with her mouth open.
“Oh baby--” You stood up and walked over to her.
“Why was he saying that, mom?” She had lost her sassy demeanor, and was now just a scared little girl.
“I…” You put a hand on her shoulder. “I don’t know, baby girl,”
“I bet it’s because he’s jealous,” She scoffed, now resuming her angry flippant self. “He’s jealous dad is a better dude than him. I don’t know why--”
“We are not getting into this again, Margaret,” You used her full name, letting her know you meant business.
“You don’t…” Maggie paused. “You don’t believe him, do you mom?”
“What?” You blinked, trying to decide whether or not to answer honestly. Her big doe eyes looked at you, begging you to confirm that her dad was the man she thought he was.
“...No, of course not sweetie,” You shook your head and pulled her into a huge hug.
But you weren’t entirely sure at all.
-------------------
The Next Day In The SVU Office
Rafael and the squad had been working all night since he had made the call to Olivia. The squad room was now full of a corkboard full of all of William’s aliases, past transgressions, etc. Except now your name along with Maggie and Kylie’s names were added on a side stem, with “Billy Loomis?” written above it.
“So, you’re sure this chick hasn’t been helping William this whole time? Helping him hideout?” Fin asked Barba.
“What?” Rafael gasped. “No, not at all. No way,” He shook his head violently. “She didn’t even know who he was,”
“....Mmmhmm,” Fin gave the others a look.
“Look Fin I didn’t come here to here you insult my girlfriend--”
“Your girlfriend?” Nick asked. “Didn’t you say she kicked you out?”
“I don’t care, when she realizes--”
“And what if she doesn’t?” Olivia chimed in. “What if she does try to help him now?”
“Olivia!” He looked at her in betrayal. “Come on, you don’t think--”
“You said that he already convinced her to kick you out by just a few words on the phone,” Olivia pointed out. “Now that he knows you two are involved he is gonna try like hell to drive that wedge further and further,”
“But he won’t be able to if she finds out who he is,” Rafael rebutted.
“But if she won’t look, she won’t know,” Olivia stood her ground.
“She’ll look,” Rafael reiterated. “I know she will,”
----------------------
Back at your house
It was late at night, the girls were asleep and you were on your phone in your bed with a bottle of wine. You had brought a glass to bed with you, but you were drinking straight out of the bottle.
What Rafael said yesterday was eating at you. But what was eating at you more was the fact that you were starting to believe him over the man you had shared your life with for almost a decade, a man who you had two children with.
You looked at your phone which had your text thread with Rafael pulled up on it. You went through all the texts you had ever sent. The late night conversations, the little texts in the middle of the day just to say he missed you. He was so good to you, he always had been. He would never lie to you...would he?
You closed the text thread and opened up GOOGLE. You looked to the sky and asked God to forgive you for betraying the father of your children like this; but it had to be done. You typed in the name “WILLIAM LEWIS” and hit “SEARCH”.
---------------------------
At Rafael’s Home
Rafael was staring at the text thread between you from his own phone, rubbing the screen with his thumb. He wanted so badly to call you, but he knew he needed to trust you to do this on your own. Plus, he was sure you wouldn’t answer if he called anyway. While he was staring longingly at his phone, it lit up:
UNKNOWN NUMBER CALLING
He had a pit of dread forming in his stomach, but he answered the phone anyway.
“Hello?”
“Hello there, counselor,”
“How did you get this number?”
“My lovely wife gave it to me, obviously,”
“You’re lying,”
“Am I?”
“Yes, she wouldn’t do that,”
“Oh really?” He chuckled darkly. “You really think she cares about you that much?”
“I know she does,”
“Well, you know that’s really unfortunate for you, because you won’t see her or my kids again,”
“Why are you doing this?” Rafael asked. “Why do you even have a family? What are you going to do with them?!”
“What?” He laughed. “Nothing, counselor. I assure you,”
“Bullshit,”
“No actually, it’s not,” William explained. “Y’know after I had my little...adventure, in New York. I went off the grid. Wanted to live a normal life for a little while. And then I met Y/N,”
“Uh huh..” Rafael listened impatiently.
“And then I fell in love with her, and we had two beautiful girls. And I love those girls more than anything in this world, Barba,” He explained.
“You’re a fucking liar,” Rafael spit. “You don’t know how to love,”
“Believe it or not I do,” William smirked. “I just...don’t show it in a normal way,”
“Right,” Rafael rolled his eyes.
“Hey, look,” William defended. “I was in love with Y/N for a while, I really was. And then--”
“Then what?”
“Then, she got a little naggy,” William shrugged. “She got on my nerves, and I got that itch again,”
“That itch?”
“Y’know, that...itch,”
“You wanted to kill her,”
“I did,” William admitted. “But I figured killing mommy wouldn’t be something I could get past the kiddos, so I scratched that itch in other places,”
“She did say you travelled a lot…’for work’,” Rafael recalled a conversation he had about him before with you one time, in passing. If only he knew what he knew now.
“Yeah,” William chuckled to himself.
His ‘work’ was quite extensive. And it was exhausting trying to lead a double life, but he was being honest when he said he loved his girls. He really did. He loved them more than anything or anyone he had before, maybe ever. He’d never let anyone hurt them...or turn them against him.
“Anyhow,” He continued. “Y’know I may not be in love with Y/N anymore, but you know what I hate?”
“What?”
“People touching my things,” Lewis growled.
“She is not a THING, Lewis. She’s not even yours anymore,” Rafael yelled.
“See I know you’ve never been married Barba, so maybe you don’t understand this,” Lewis lowered his voice to an eerily calm manner. “But when you marry someone, in front of God and everyone you love, it creates a bond. An everlasting bond,”
“Oh give me a break--”
“And that bond, cannot be broken. ‘Till death do us part,”
“...Are you threatening her?” Rafael was vibrating with rage.
“No, of course not counselor,” William replied innocently. “However, if you were to help her break those vows….I might be forced to,”
“Excuse me?”
“Until death do us part, Barba,” William repeated. “That means either she stays faithful to me, or I’ll have to kill her,”
“Don’t you DARE touch her Lewis, do you hear me?!” Rafael’s blood was boiling.
“Well I won’t have to, as long as you leave her be,” William replied calmly.
“....You won’t get away with this,” Rafael growled.
“Oh I think I will,” William smirked. “Because if you send anyone after me, she will die,”
“You wouldn’t dare,” Rafael growled. “You just said your kids would--”
“So maybe mommy gets in a car wreck on the way home, or God forbid robbed in a parking lot!” Lewis taunted Rafael with an evil laugh.
“You’re the fucking devil, you know that?”
“Maybe, but I know I’m a man who gets what he wants,” Lewis chuckled. “I’ll let you go Barba, I know you’re a busy man. And remember, I’ll be watching!”
And with that he hung up on Rafael.
------------------
Almost immediately after hanging up with Lewis, Rafael’s phone lit up again.
Y/N CALLING
“Holy shit…” He blinked in disbelief at the phone. How did you know?
“...Y/N?”
“Rafa,” You tried to keep yourself from crying, you couldn’t wake up the girls. “Rafa I...I saw William Lewis,”
“Oh god,” Rafael put a hand over his head. “Baby, I am so, so--”
“No, I’m sorry,” You cut him off. “I should have listened to you, I should have googled him, not kicked you out,”
“You didn’t know…”
“No but you did, and I should have trusted you. That’s what you do when you--” You paused, never having had said it out loud before.
“....When you what?” He waited with bated breath.
“When you love someone,” You bit your lip, hoping it wasn’t too late to say.
“I knew it,” He smiled to himself. “I knew you loved me. I knew he was full of shit,”
“What do you mean he?” Your eyes quirked.
“Shit,” Rafael realized he misspoke. “Um, well--”
“He called you, didn’t he?” You asked.
“...He said you gave him my number,” Rafael confessed.
“I didn’t, I swear to God Rafa I didn’t,” Tears stung your eyes. “I-I don’t know how he--”
“It’s fine, carino,” He assured you. “He has his ways, I know that,”
“Okay…” You said softly, not really sure he believed you. Damn Billy. Damn him to hell.
“Speaking of ‘his ways’--,” Rafael added with an uncomfortable clearing of his throat.
Oh God. What was he going to say?
“He...we…” Rafael tried to get the words out, he really didn’t want to say them out loud.
“He what, Rafael?” You pressed him.
“He said that I can’t see you again,” He closed his eyes as the words fell out of his mouth.
“What?” You nearly dropped the wine bottle all over your sheets.
“I can’t--” He started to repeat himself.
“No,” You cut him off. “No that is not--” There was no way in hell Billy was going to keep you from Rafael, not now.
“He said he would kill you, Y/N,” Rafael said very pensively.
“Well why hasn’t he done it already?!” You raised your voice, quickly looking to the door to make sure the girls hadn’t heard you. They hadn’t.
“He said your kids wouldn’t forgive him, and he really does love them,” He relayed what Lewis had told him.
“Ugh,” You gagged. “I can’t believe that son of a--”
“Y/N I believe him,” Rafael interjected.
“About what?”
“All of it,” He sighed. “I...I think he really does love your daughters,”
“...Really?”
“Yeah, he said that’s why he left. He wanted to scratch his...itch, somewhere else,”
“Oh my god…” You wanted to vomit thinking about all the “business trips” Billy used to take. If you only knew what kind of “business” he was in.
“...And I also think he’ll be good on his word of having you killed,”
“Having me killed?” You snorted. “By who?”
“Guys like him, they know plenty of...dark people,” He rubbed his eyes, he was getting a headache from all of this worrying. “He probably has people watching your house right now,”
“No, there’s no--” You looked out your window and down the street. Nothing looked out of place, but now you were paranoid. “...There’s no way, I would notice. I’m pretty sure,”
“Look we may be worried about nothing,” The idea just occurred to Rafael’s mind.
“Nothing? Really?” You laughed sarcastically.
“Well look, if Lewis thinks that you believed him over me, just...just keep him thinking that,” He hated the idea of you pretending to still...like, Lewis but he needed you safe.
“You want me to just go about my life like I don’t know my ex-husband is a psychopath?!” You hissed, really attempting to keep your voice down. The girls definitely could not hear any of this. Ever.
“Just for now,” Rafael assured you.
“Do you really think he’ll think I chose to believe him over you?” You twirled your hair nervously.
“Well, I mean you didn’t--” He paused. “You’ve never mentioned me before, maybe he’ll just think we were a...a fling or something,”
“I was introducing you to my kids!” You cried. “I think that’s a little more than a fling,”
“Okay fair point,” Rafael shook his head. “But, it would make perfect sense that you would just believe him at his word that I was the bad guy, right? He’s the father of your children, I’m just some guy you were having sex with for a few months,”
“No you aren’t,” You bit back tears hearing him drag your relationship like that. “You know you’re more than that,”
“I mean for the sake of the lie, amor,” He said with a somewhat endearing tone. He liked the fact that you made sure he knew that was a bunch of shit.
“I guess,” You shrugged, still not liking the idea of having to shit on what you and Rafael had. Even if it was just acting. But you had to, for your life. And for your children’s lives.
“Rafael, what if he suspects something? What if he kidnaps the girls?” Your mind was racing with worst case scenarios.
“Y/N I’m telling you, if you just play it cool, he’ll never think anything else about this,” Rafael tried to comfort you through the phone, but he knew it was somewhat fruitless without him being able to touch and hold you.
“....And I’m just supposed to live like this?” You felt tears in your voice. “Just...just never see you again? After I just told you I--”
“Just for now, mi vida,” He tried not to to start crying himself. He had to be the strong one here. “Just until I can-- figure something else out,”
“...I just want you here,” You whimpered.
Your whimpers pierced his heart like a million knives. All he wanted in that moment was to be next to you, holding you while you cried. Protecting you with his life. But he knew in reality, this was how he had to protect you. And your girls.
“I know…” He nodded his head, a few tears dropping down his face. “I just want to be there,”
“...I-I need to go, it’s late. The girls will be getting up for school soon,” You wiped tears from your own face, putting the wine bottle back in your side table.
“Alright, mi amor,” He said softly, not really wanting to hang up. He didn’t know when the next time he’d be able to hear your voice was going to be, and he wanted every second he had left with you.
“Don’t…” He bit back the sobs in his tone. “Don’t call me, or text me. Wait for me to contact you, okay?”
“What?” Your voice went up a register higher. Now you didn’t want to hang up with him, if he was going to ghost you like this. “No, Raf please, we haven’t--”
“I know,” He rubbed his eyes. “I know we’ve never not talked for even a day, I know. And it’s going to kill me, just know that. You’re my best friend, Y/N,”
“Really?” You blinked in surprise. “Even over Olivia?”
“...Don’t tell her,” He cry-laughed. He knew that would be the last time he laughed for a while.
“You’re my best friend too, Rafael,” You were really crying now. “Ever since I met you, you’ve made my life better. And now I’ve gone and fucked it--"
“Hey,” He stopped you with a stern tone. “No. You didn’t do anything wrong here, you understand me? That’s-- that’s not why I’m cutting you off, okay? I’m not punishing you, please know that,”
“...I know,” You replied in a soft voice, almost like a little girl scared of the dark.
“Okay, good,” He breathed in relief. He couldn’t live with himself if you blamed yourself for this mess.
“I promise-- I swear to you, as soon as I think it’s safe I will come straight to you,” He promised. “The very second,”
“Okay,” You nodded in a more controlled, mature tone. You had to be strong now, you didn’t want him to think you were a blubbering idiot without him. You had survived three long years on your own, you could do it again. You hoped.
“I love you, Y/N,” Rafael repeated it for the third time that day. You wished you could record it and play it over and over again, falling asleep to it.
“I love you too Rafael,” You sniffled.
“...Talk soon,” He said softly, then hung up before he could change his mind about the whole thing.
You both cried yourself to sleep that night.

WINGLESS | Ch. 2
***WARNING: Season 4 Spoilers Ahead
***New to Wingless? Start at Chapter 1!
CH. SUMMARY: Of all the people Rena could let slip that she knows Ladybug's identity in front of . . . it had to be Chat Noir.
< < < THREE MONTHS AGO < < <
Ladybug swung from building to building, the exhilaration of a job well done fueling the fire in her veins. Traffic it would seem had resumed immediately, the sounds of wheels on pavement and cars obnoxiously honking ricocheting throughout the city’s architecture. This didn’t surprise Ladybug, seeing as the city had grown quite accustomed to akumas blocking the roads. Once the tips of her toes touched a rooftop, it wasn’t long before she was joined by another pair of boots.
“That went well,” commented Ladybug as she swiveled to face her teammate.
Rena Rouge folded her arms across her chest and popped a hip, lips puckered in a frown. “Are you kidding, girl?”
Ladybug’s face fell. No, she wasn’t kidding. She honestly had felt it went well. Was she missing something? Did a disaster strike while she was focused on her lucky charm? Had her Miraculous ladybugs not corrected all of the damage? Were there civilians hurt somewhere--
Abruptly, Rena clapped her hands on Ladybug’s shoulders and squealed, putting a halt to Ladybug’s internal meltdown. “That went amazing! We’re like a well-oiled machine, you and me. I still can’t believe I get to do superhero stuff!” At the sound of Alya’s impromptu shrieking, some pigeons nearby took flight, cooing what Ladybug imagined was a bird version of crotchety old people grumbling. Not even the least bit deterred, Rena leaned forward into Ladybug’s personal bubble, eyes wide with excitement. “But what I really can’t believe is that I’m doing it all with my best friend!”
Ladybug relaxed her posture and let out a breath she hadn’t known she was holding. But she quickly regretted it when she got a nice, big whiff of crepes, urine, and cigarette smoke. Ah, Paris. Home, sweet home. However, noticing her thoughts were veering dangerously offtrack, Ladybug shook herself mentally.
So nothing had gone wrong. Rena was just being Rena and drawing out the suspense. Ladybug patted her friend’s right hand--which was still firmly squeezing her shoulder--and smiled sweetly.
“It sure is convenient that I don’t have to hide from you anymore,” the spotted-heroine remarked. “I think half the time I took so long to get to a battle because I always had to come up with excuses.”
Rena grinned with a knowing glint in her eye. “I might be impressed if your excuses were actually good.”
Rolling her eyes, Ladybug turned away from Rena, causing Rena’s hands to fall to her sides. “Hey, you try having to come up with five hundred different reasons you have to flake on your friends and see if you fare any better.”
Rena was about to sass her best friend some more, but the words caught in her throat at the sight of Ladybug hugging herself. She recognized this stance. Ladybug’s head was in what Rena deemed the “Guilt Grotto.”
Rena stepped forward to wrap Ladybug in a warm, girl-you-better-get-your-head-out-of-the-guilt-grotto-or-I’ll-tickle-you embrace when there was movement across the rooftops in her periphery. She craned her head to the right to find the familiar silhouette of Chat Noir vaulting his way over, a goofy grin clearly plastered across his face the closer he got.
In a matter of seconds, he landed squarely beside Ladybug, startling her. Ladybug, the epitome of grace that she was, did a series of awkward hand gestures before falling back on her bum, shrieking.
Chat Noir didn’t even look a teeny bit remorseful.
“Looks like I got here just in time!” he quipped, bowing and sliding his baton back into place on his suit.
Rena held out a hand for her friend as Ladybug voiced her question: “In time for what?”
Chat bounced on the balls of his feet. “Well, for the akuma, of course! You guys were having a quick team meeting, right?”
Rena and Ladybug shared a look. So that’s what he was so happy about. Ladybug opened her mouth to reply, but Rena beat her to it.
“Actually, we already took care of the akuma.”
Chat Noir visibly deflated. His ears drooped and his belt tail started to swish back and forth. “Oh.” He turned to the edge of the rooftop and hunkered down, letting his legs kick to and fro in an attempt to get rid of some of the adrenaline.
Ladybug winced. Chat did not sound happy. Hesitantly, she sat next to him. Rena then took a seat beside her, making her the middle. “Sorry, Chat. I know you like battling akumas more than I do.”
Chat nodded before murmuring, “Thirteen.”
“Hm?” Ladybug scooted closer to him to hear him better, their legs nearly touching. She leaned to her right to get a better look at his face and tilted her head innocently. If she were Marinette then, she might have fallen off the rooftop altogether, but she was Ladybug, and Ladybug had way more poise.
Chat didn’t answer immediately. Whatever it was that he was about to say, Ladybug knew it must be something important if he, the guy who was always upfront about his feelings, found it difficult to say. The guy who told her . . .
It’s precisely when something is important that it’s important to say it.
No matter what.
Ladybug gingerly rested a hand on his arm, hoping he understood what the gesture meant. It’s okay. Take your time. I’m ready to listen.
After a few more moments of staring at his feet, Chat Noir lifted his head so his eyes bore into Ladybug’s. They creased with . . . Was that worry? Sadness? Fear?
“Thirteen,” he repeated, a bit louder. “That makes it thirteen times you and Rena have battled an akuma without me. Since Montparnasse Tower.”
Ladybug was speechless. As she stared ahead, eyes unfocused, she tried her hardest to recall all the akuma battles. It was challenging as her memory loved to fail her when she needed it most. Had he really not been in any of those battles? Had it really been thirteen times?
Had he . . . had he really been keeping count?
Ladybug didn’t know what to say, but she knew she had to say something, anything. But what could she say? Was she sorry?
No, she couldn’t be sorry that the akumas had been defeated, that the victims had been rescued, that she had been able to do so quickly because Alya had been spending a record amount of hours by her side.
She couldn’t be sorry about any of that. She was only sad that he felt sidelined.
That was not her intention.
But she knew what the solution to that was.
And she would rather die before she let Chat Blanc see the light of day.
Somehow, knowing her identity had led to him being akumatized. Somehow, whether it was in an alternate timeline or when their memories had been wiped by Oblivio, she knew that what he said at Montparnasse Tower--that to know him was to love him--was truth. And Chat Blanc had told her what their love did.
Their love destroyed the world.
Their love had killed her.
Their love broke the moon, for crying out loud.
But, most importantly, their love hurt him.
Chat Noir had told her he loved her, many times, and she had even been considering giving his pun-spurting, jokes-at-the-worst-times self a chance. But being forced into combat with her akumatized partner had violently squashed any hope she had for them, for LadyNoir as Alya coined it on her blog. Ladybug would be damned if she allowed that to happen again. And if that meant encouraging him to move on even though it broke her heart . . .
Well, it wasn’t supposed to be easy being a hero.
Ladybug had this entire conversation with herself in a matter of seconds. She was careful not to let her face expose any of her innermost feelings, instead sporting an expression of neutrality. What she ultimately decided to do was tell him the only truth she had to offer. He hated secrets and she hated lying. What a pair they made.
“I wish it could be different,” she whispered.
And oh, how she did. She desperately yearned to tell him who she was, to know who he was, to tell him about Alya and Nino and all the other people she had entrusted with a Miraculous.
She wanted him to know how she grew up, what kinds of things she did at school, how she was utterly ridiculous when it came to her rotten luck (and she tried very hard to push a certain blue-eyed blonde out of her head the moment that phrase came to mind). She was sure he would snicker at all the times she made a fool of herself in front of Adrien, of all the ways she made her own life a living hell with her clumsiness.
Or perhaps he wouldn’t laugh. Perhaps he would pat her shoulder and uplift her with words of encouragement. She didn’t know. After the stunt he pulled with the balcony of candle-lit roses, the boy was a wild card, an enigma. He was complex.
And it thrilled her.
But no matter how she felt about him, they couldn’t know each other that way.
Sighing quietly, Ladybug brought her knees up to her chest and turned away from Chat Noir. If she had been watching him when she responded, she might have seen him look longingly at her, but she didn’t.
Rena Rouge did, though.
Wanting to make her friends feel better, Rena added, “Don’t you worry your pretty kitty head about it. I’m sure all those battles would have taken way longer if we weren’t already together.”
Ladybug and Chat Noir both stiffened. Chat’s gaze flicked from Rena to his partner over and over before they finally rested on Ladybug. “Uh, what does she mean by that?”
Ladybug shot a glare in Rena’s direction, but her eyes softened when she saw that Rena genuinely appeared surprised.
He didn’t know? Rena’s eyes asked Ladybug.
He didn’t know, Ladybug’s affirmed.
One would think Rena was Lady Luck because her pendant had decided that that moment was the best time to beep, and she couldn’t agree more. Now she had an escape route from this conversation. “Welp,” she clapped her hands together, “I’m gonna go chill in that fine-lookin’ alley over there.”
Before Ladybug could agree, Rena sprang from her spot and promptly disappeared. She was a regular magician, and her latest trick was leaving Ladybug with a rabbit to put back in the hat.
Or, er--a cat back in the bag. Whatever.
“What she meant by that . . . ” Ladybug began slowly, like she was addressing a wounded animal. Which, maybe she was but just, you know, emotionally wounded.
“Yeah . . . ” prompted Chat, signalling that he was not going to drop this.
Ladybug quickly jumped to her feet and began her ritual of frantic pacing. “Look, I’ve been wanting to tell you this for a while, but I didn’t know how to because I knew it would raise questions that I couldn’t answer--”
A blonde boy in white leather with somber blue eyes appeared in front of her and she dug her heels into the cement, skidding to a stop.
Chat Noir was behind Ladybug now, his voice soft and curious. “Bug?”
Ladybug was frozen in place for a few more seconds before she shook her head hard enough to give herself shaken-baby syndrome and nodded, satisfied that the aggressive head-shaking had rid her of he who shall not be named. She whipped around and started.
Chat Noir was incredibly close.
She didn’t know he had gotten this close.
Geez, his eyes were really cat-like.
He also had a really cute nose--
Ladybug, FOCUS!
Ladybug took a step back. She made it her mission to ogle his bell instead of looking into his dumb kitten eyes. “You--” she began, but Ladybug’s throat was suddenly dry. She gulped. “You know how much I hate secrets and lying. And I know how much you hate secrets and lying. So I’m not going to lie to you. But I may not be able to answer the questions I’m sure you’ll have, so please . . . ”
Ladybug grabbed one of his hands then and held it firmly between her own, pleading with every fiber of her being that this would communicate how much he meant to her even though she knew what she was about to tell him would make it seem like he didn’t mean anything.
Please forgive me, Ladybug’s heart supplied.
When he didn’t immediately take his hand back, she looked up at him. She looked into those dumb kitten eyes and knew without a shadow of a doubt--
She was a masochist.
This was going to hurt. He didn’t like when she was the only one to know Rena’s identity. He definitely wasn’t going to like that Rena knew hers. This would be so much easier if she wasn’t ogling those big, emerald green, beautiful, brazenly dumb kitten eyes.
But she was a masochist. And she needed to see them while they still held love for her.
“I told Rena Rouge who I am.”
There. She ripped off the band-aid. Straight to the point. Zero room for interpretation. After all, her worst arguments started because of her clumsy miscommunication.
Ladybug braced herself for an explosion. She had played this moment in her head a couple hundred times since exposing herself to Alya.
Yelling. There was always yelling.
Sometimes, he stomped away while doing that weird T pose where his fists didn’t connect to his hips . . . a pose she herself was guilty of, too.
Others, he chastised her about her thoughtlessness--to which she responded that she definitely thought about it long and hard that day.
Ladybug braced herself for an explosion because she was sure there was going to be one, especially after seeing him upset about her always running off to Master Fu. He hadn’t even known there was a Guardian for a while.
What she hadn’t braced herself for was the expression on his face.
Thump, thump. Thump, thump.
His head was bowed.
His eyes were closed.
A lone tear slid down his cheek.
Thump, thump. Thump, thump.
Her heart thudded against her ribcage, screaming at her to run because he wanted her Miracul--!
No! She refused to finish that thought.
Her head yelled back that he wasn’t akumatized right now, that she wasn’t back there, that she wasn’t with him. She desperately tried to shove the image from her mind. This was more than she could bear. She just--she couldn’t take it! She couldn’t take it because . . .
Because . . .
Thump, thump. Thump, thump.
Because he looked just like him.
Thump-thump. Thump-thump.
He looked like Chat Blanc.

by the way (you saved me) - chapter seven
“it’s been a while,” yeonjun says, smiling at his old friend from all of those years ago.
“so it has,” sunny replies. “how have you been? busy, i suppose?”
yeonjun chuckles and nods. “the academy really took off after i came back from the states.”
“i’ve heard from taehyun,” she replies. “he really loves that place. always talking about how the academy made him a much better dancer than i ever will be,” she rolls her eyes.
“little does he know that we have the same background,” yeonjun chuckles. “i taught him everything i know. he’s an amazing dancer.”
her eyes dim. “yeah. he’s gonna miss it, i bet.”
yeonjun presses his lips into a tight line, placing his hand over her’s. “hey. he’ll be okay. as long as i’m here, i’ll make sure he gets the best treatment korea can offer.”
“why are you doing this?” she asks.
yeonjun smiles at her. he can’t help but think that she hasn’t changed a bit.
they were teenagers when they met. the both of them not older than 16 when they got accepted to an elite summer dance camp in LA. they bonded over having roots in seoul and a heart that beat for dance.
perhaps it was the magic of being away from home for the first time or maybe it was just fate but yeonjun actually fell in love that summer.
but all it took was one phone call from soobin to remind him why he worked so hard to get accepted to this dance camp.
soobin, crying over the phone because dad was out working late, trying to make ends meet all while him and beomgyu were alone and scared.
yeonjun knew that once the summer ended, he had to resume his duties as a big brother.
but sitting across from her like this after all those years…this had to be fate, right?
her eyes are sad as she waits for his answer. “i’m doing thing because…” because? why was he doing this? for all he knows, taehyun hates yeonjun as much as beomgyu does.
but he also knows that taehyun doesn’t want to hurt beomgyu.
“i’m doing this because taehyun is able to do something i can’t.”
her face twists in confusion. “and that is?”
“he’s able to look after the ones he loves despite hurting the most.” sunny stares at him, not understanding. “yn, i know you’re close with beomgyu.” she nods. “but there’s something you should know.”
he takes a deep breath, thinking back to the day taehyun approached him in the office.
“i’m not coming back for the next season.”
“taehyun, you’re my best dancer. are you out of your mind?” the younger shakes his head. “then why are you leaving? i got you a full scholarship to college! what? were you waiting to finish school before you decided to jump ship? have you been using beomgyu this entire time-“
“what? no!”
yeonjun scoffs and pushes his hair back, gesturing for him to go on with the other.
“i’m asking you for a favor. i’ll beg if i have to.” his eyes are piercing, serious and fiery. “do everything in your power to keep beomgyu from finding out.”
“finding out about what?”
“about the tumour behind my eye.”
he looks at sunny and frowns. “everyone knows. huening kai knew first, soobin knew second and i was the last to find out. and i’d like to respect your brother’s wish by keeping this a secret from beomgyu.”
“what? beomgyu doesn’t know? why-“
“it’s taehyun’s wish, yn. like i told you. taehyun looks after his loved ones despite being hurt the most.”
“that still doesn’t explain why you’re paying for his medical expenses. he needs chemo and surgery-“
“we should probably look into transportation too considering the guy travels on skateboard. probably needs to have some rent covered too.”
“no. you can’t. i won’t let you.”
“i don’t like to be in debt to people, yn,” he says, knowing she won’t understand. “a life for a life.”
“danny-“
“just eat up. tomorrow, i’ll open an account under his name.” she’s still stunned, causing yeonjun to laugh. “just accept it, yn. nothing you can say will change my mind. taehyun and i have already agreed on it.” she’s still staring, making the boy roll his eyes. “yah. you really can’t let this go, huh?”
“i can’t.”
“fine. pay for our next date then and we’ll call it even.”
“d-date?”
yeonjun clears his voice and raises his pitch, fist pressed to his cheek. “oh danny choi! if i ever see you again i’m gonna kiss you-“
“shut up!” she covers his mouth. “do you have to be so loud?!”
he nods, “yup.”
she groans, a bit annoyed but nothing new to yeonjun. “fine. next date is on me.”
and he smiles.

Kingslayer AU: Chapter Six
Finally. Onto the newer chapters. These’ll have a lot more character development and bonding. I wrote this about two days ago. So it’s hot off the presses.
I’m actually kinda proud of this one. Also I’m trying to make these shorter because I don’t wanna be writing a single chapter for three days straight anymore; it was burning me the hell out.
Tango readjusted his scarf, throwing the end of it behind him. It hit Scott in the face on the way down.
“Watch it,” Scott smacked the man in front of him on the shoulder.
“You’re annoying,” Tango replied from in front of him.
“Guys,” Impulse scolded.
They were approaching the end of the tree line, which would lead them right to the gates of Dogwarts. Scott had been looking at his feet for most of the journey, which is why he ran into Tango when he stopped suddenly.
Tango turned around and pushed him away, “Watch it,” he said with sarcasm.
The group chose to stop just inside the trees. Impulse drew a cloth from his pocket and wrapped it over Scott’s eyes. If he was the one making the plan he wouldn’t have himself as a kidnapping victim, it was a bit on the nose. Tango said it was just for looks.
Scott’s weapons were taken and stashed in Impulse’s Ender Chest, as well as his pager.
Scott sighed, “I still don’t understand why we can’t just get in there and…” he made a stabbing gesture to the air.
Impulse made a sarcastic attempt at looking shocked, “okay, first off, there’s six of them and three of us,” he pointed out.
“Second, that would be impulsive and stupid. They would all come back and hunt us for sport,” he said.
“Says you,” Scott said in the wrong direction, because he was blindfolded. Impulse rolled his eyes at the jape.
“Okay, you ready?” Tango put a hand on Scott’s shoulder. Eager to get a move on.
“As ever,” Scott replied. Then he was lifted off his feet by his accomplices, both of which were taller than him. A hand under each arm.
The trio left the trees and trudged up the mountain towards Dogwarts. Scott went over his life choices in his head while Tango and Impulse quietly argued over not dropping him.
Apparently someone was waiting for them, because Tango began exchanging words with a person standing in front of the gates. It was Etho, no doubt. They discussed the elephant in the room, Scott stuck to the plan and said nothing. Even when Etho asked him how it felt.
He did flip him the bird though.
When Scott was re-introduced to the ground he was on a set of wooden steps. Tango had gone inside, presumably to alert the boss of the situation. Impulse kept a firm grip on Scott’s forearm.
“You know what to do right?” Impulse asked.
Scott nodded. Hoping his acting skills weren’t too rough around the edges.
The door clicked open and a pair of hands dragged him into the main base, pushed him down in a chair, and pulled his blindfold off.
Across from Scott, standing over the opened book on the enchantment table was the Red King. A shiny new pair of sunglasses rested on his face, on top of a purple-tinted nose, and his arm was in a sling. The sight almost brought a smile to Scott’s face.
Ren clapped the book shut and stood to assess his guest.
“Well, what a pleasant surprise,” he greeted without a smile.
Tango put a hand on Scott’s back, “I think you’d be pleased to know he came to us,” he said.
An eyebrow raised from under Ren’s sunglasses. He reached out and pulled a chair from a table near the wall, positioning it in front of Scott.
Ren sighed and sat down, crossing his legs, “is that so?” he asked. Scott started getting uncomfortable.
Impulse made to speak up but was silenced by a hand.
“Let the man speak for himself,” Ren ordered, “come on now dude. Don’t tell me you’ve lost your voice,” he teased.
Scott cleared his throat, “I came to them. Yes,” he confirmed.
“Why,” Ren asked sternly.
Scott did his best not to squirm.
“I changed my mind,” he said, “I want except your offer. To join the Red Army,” Scott explained.
Ren laughed out loud. He threw his head back and leaned backwards. Scott bit the inside of his lip and looked away. Tango shifted on his feet.
“Really?” Ren asked, he was almost crying.
“Ren…” Impulse attempted to calm the king down but was silenced.
“No, no, by all means I want to hear what Major has to say,” Ren said with encouragement.
Scott grimaced, “Although I do not agree that kidnapping me was the best way to go about gaining my interest,” he started.
“Well it certainly gained some interest,” Ren said under his breath.
“I was already considering leaving my agreement with the Red Desert; and do not get me wrong I don’t appreciate anything you and your men have put me or my husband through,” Scott raised his voice. Assertiveness taking over, he stood up.
“I can see an opportunity when it holds an axe above my head,” Scott crossed his arms.
“I am willing to come to an agreement with you. I will join your army, I will act as a double agent, I will act under your orders, on one condition,” he held up a finger.
Ren slowly stood to meet his gaze, although he was a lot taller.
“Jimmy will not be involved,” Scott said explicitly.
The Red King turned away and went back to the enchantment table, he gazed into the book absently. Then tossed it back on the table.
“You’re on thin Ice Major,” Ren concluded and quickly left.
Scott expected a handshake at least.
“I’d say that went pretty well,” Tango said after the door slammed.
“He agreed?” Scott asked.
“Well he didn’t reject. So I’d say you’re hired,” Impulse provided.
“He thinks you’re a valuable asset. I don’t think he could afford to refuse your offer,” Tango leaned down and reassured.
Scott slouched down in the chair and rubbed his eyes. This was a bad idea.
His first orders came two days later. He was put in charge of the “chores”. Which essentially meant he was doing everything nobody else wanted to do.
Tango assured him that the Red Army was just sizing him up to see if he was actually serious. It was precaution, considering Scott had sort of blindsided them by joining forces. Nobody would look him in the eyes unless they were ordering him around. He knew he wasn’t meant to feel welcome there.
“They’ll come around, although I’m not sure why it bothers you,” he said.
“It’s just awkward,” Scott excused, “they act like I’m gonna pull a knife on them whenever there’s only two of us on the room,” he said.
“Well, after you showed them the door two weeks ago they’ve been a bit jumpy,” Tango replied.
Being the supply runner meant the sacrifice of his sleep schedule, except for his three “off days”. In order to operate effectively he had to do most of his chores at night when his husband was sleeping; and thank god he did that most of the time.
Most of the time.
The other times Scott packed a bag full of iron or wood and said he was running errands under the guise of not being able to sleep. It didn’t feel good to lie, but as far as Jimmy was concerned Scott only left the house on the nights they were both awake.
At the next meeting Scott complained to Tango over a bottle of mystery alcohol, “I may as well be an indentured servant,” he poured himself another glass.
“You know, Scott, you’re actually doing something pretty important,” Tango said from where he was lounging on a pile of pillows.
“Indentured servant,” Scott repeated.
“You’re the one in charge of all their resources. I mean they even have you doing farm work right? So you know like, everything about them,” Tango pointed out.
Scott put his head down on the table, “to the last stack of paper,” he deadpanned.
Tango sighed, he got up and pat his teammate on the back.
“At least you’re not on Nether duty,” he said.
“I’m leading a double life! I’m lying to my husband, I’m lying to my friends, I’m lying to the whole Red Army! Who am I?,” Scott shouted; and he meant it more than he’d like to under the alcohol.
“Okay, that’s deeper than I wanna go,” Tango replied. He sat back down and chugged the last of his drink.
“I mean I’m just sitting here, letting other people write my life for me!” Scott continued.
“Okay calm down,” Tango said.
“No! I won’t. You have no idea what I’ve been through,” Scott stood up, his chair slammed on the ground.
Tango shot to his feet, “then enlighten me, Scott. Enlighten me on how hard your life has been while you ignored the rest of the server,” he yelled.
“While you sat back and did nothing, watching the world fall apart around you?” he provided.
“You don’t know me,” Scott said with disgust.
“And who does, Scott?” Tango replied.
The other couldn’t answer, because Tango was right. Scott nodded curtly, picked up his drink, and left the room.
He finished his drink on the way out and threw the glass against the rock face next to the abandoned cow farm.
The shards exploded and scattered in the snow.
Impulse found him sitting on a bolder an hour later, sharpening a stick with a rock.
“I heard you had a disagreement,” he said without warning.
Scott turned around, then resumed his sulking.
“We had an argument, you may as well call it what it is,” he replied.
“Hm,” Impulse responded.
“He insulted me,” Scott complained.
“Does “insulted” mean he said something true that you don’t like?” Impulse asked.
Scott didn’t respond.
Impulse leaned on the side of the bolder and looked into the distance, thinking about his next sentences. Chips of wood fell near his feet.
“You know it would be a lot easier if you two could just get along,” he said.
“Okay dad,” Scott deadpanned.
“Don’t start with me now. I’m trying to help you,” Impulse cautioned.
“Sorry,” Scott apologized. He felt worse when he insulted Impulse than when he insulted Tango.
“I know he’s a bit of a handful, but so are you. I want to make this as easy as possible, and I know you’re not looking to make friends right now, but I think you would feel better-“ Impulse started, Scott rolled his eyes and scoffed.
“You would feel better if you just,” he gestured with his hands between himself and Scott, “let us in,” Impulse finished a bit dejected.
Scott stopped sharpening his dwindling stick. He sighed and dropped it in his lap, putting his head on his knees.
“Who else can it be Scott? Don’t shut down on us like this,” Impulse begged.
“Leave me alone,” Scott said without hesitation.
Impulse lingered next to him, then pat his hand on the rock and nodded. He walked away.
Scott raised his head and watched him until his head disappeared under the hill.

The Oncoming Storm Part 26: Sick
Liu Kang x Reader and Kung Lao x Reader (gonna do both, two paths!)
You finally see where they sleep and get to take care of them a little bit. Finally. And Kung Lao is back! Yay!
A/N: I missed writing Kung Lao so much, I didn't realize how much until I was writing him again. He feeds into my sarcastic insides. My biggest suggestion for reading anything I write is to add sarcasm in your head. Lol. Hope you guys are doing well! I got home yesterday but had this chapter prepped and ready to go since I knew I'd be jetlagged today. Smooches.
Part 25 Part 27 Chapter Index
You rejoined Liu Kang who had very much still been watching you. He no longer made any attempt to hide it.
“Everything alright?” He looked weary. You couldn’t un-notice it.
“Yeah. Chen wanted to catch up, but I told her later.” Was it just you or had he gotten paler? You touched his forehead with the back of your hand, and he was radiating heat. But Liu Kang was always a little warmer than most. He pulled your hand away from his forehead and chuckled under his breath.
“I’m fine, Y/N.” He gave your hand a gentle squeeze before letting it go. “Careful down here, by the way. The monks can be a little…” He drifted off.
“Yeah, they’re huge drama queens and gossips. I know. You have no idea how much I know.”
“Yes.” He kept his eyes on the floor ahead of you, as if to purposely avoid eye contact with you. “They are all very nice, but they are also… as you put it… dramatic.”
“I can handle it. I think they’re kind of funny. Besides, I got used to being gossiped around as a kid.” You walked slowly with him through the halls, not exactly sure where you were headed, dragging your bag behind you. “How are you feeling?”
“What, are you worried about me?” He grinned mischievously.
“I am never going to live that down, am I?” You groaned.
“Nope. But it is very sweet that you do. I’m okay. I don’t feel like I have a fever. I’m sore and tired but it has been a wild few days, Y/N.”
“It has been.” You walked, somewhat aimlessly. “Are you going to rest?”
“Yes. Doctor’s orders.”
“How very well behaved of you.”
“My constitution is usually reliable when it comes to illness but if Kung Lao has that high a fever, then I should be careful. Usually, I’d ignore these orders for a little fever but I’m taking the effects of these artifacts very seriously. I know my limits. I don’t know theirs.”
“Is it okay if I make sure that you get back to your room to rest?”
“Oh?” He stopped walking and so you did the same. He stepped closer to you and stood over you and you straightened your posture in response. He tilted your chin up to him, pushing his boundaries with. He smirked which was the most beautiful expression you ever saw him make. “Worried?”
“Oh, god.” You made a sound of disgust. “Yes. Okay? I’m worried about you. Are you happy now?”
“Very.” Liu considered and then resumed his walk next to you. You joined him, relieved that you’d finally kept your composure in front of him. Liu Kang getting that closer to you? He knew what he was doing. You were beginning to think that they both knew exactly what they were doing and were in cahoots! They were cahooting! “I’m fine, Y/N, but yes you may accompany me.”
“I’m sorry for all of that, by the way.” You followed his lead down the hall and up a flight of stairs. “The worry thing, that is. I don’t mind that you worry about me. You were right. I got so far in my head that I was up my own ass.”
“It’s okay, Y/N. I know this has been difficult. I appreciate you taking the time to clarify things. I’m still going to tease you about it. I’m not sorry for that.” Liu led you through a door at the end of the hall. You stopped in the doorway to take in his space. His windows were covered with various draped cloths. There were scrolls hung on the walls, shelves of books, a desk, prayer beads, incense, and a prayer mat nearby. His bed was neatly made.
“It’s funny. This is exactly how I pictured your room.”
“Oh?” Liu turned to you in surprise. “You pictured it, did you?”
“I did. I pictured more books though.” You rolled your eyes at him as he teased you but couldn’t help but smile. You liked that he was teasing you a little bit. It was cute.
“I donate most of my books to the library when I’m done with them to share with everyone so that was not an incorrect assumption.” He sat on the edge of his bed and rested his elbows on his knees, hand over his left eye.
“Are you okay?” You risked being teased to worry about him again, crouching in front of him to catch his gaze.
“Headache.” He was looking gray.
“I’ll be right back.” You left his room, abandoning your little bag. You felt his eyes on you until they could no longer be. On each floor there were several rooms where waterflow had been setup in a rudimentary system that you were thankful for. You found the closest one to Liu’s room, filled a bowl with cold water, grabbed a clean cloth, and then returned to his room. You set the bowl on the little table next to his bed and then dipped the cloth in it. Then you wrung it out and gently dabbed at his forehead and held it next to his eye in hopes it would offer him some relief from the headache. He was watching you with deep admiration. It radiated from him. Sometimes Liu didn’t have to say what he was thinking because you could just tell.
“Thank you.”
“Just returning the favor.”
“You don’t owe me anything.”
“I know. I want to help you though.”
Liu laid back on his bed and you sat on the edge of it next to him and brushed his hair away from his face gently. You could see why he enjoyed doing that to you. “You can stay with me if you want.” You mentally revisited that morning almost immediately and decided you should clear your head instead.
“I’ll stay until I’m sure that you’re resting. If you want, I can read to you the way that you used to for me.”
“I’d like that.”
You stood and perused his books.
There were a handful set atop the bookshelf that were about Huangshan and then even more about ancient curses. You took the book about Huangshan and found where he’d marked in the middle of the book and sat next to him again. You rested the book in your lap, took the wet cloth, and rested it on his forehead, above his eye. His skin was hotter than usual. The fever had gotten worse even over the few minutes that it had taken you to get to his room.
Then you read to him, trying to be as clear and concise as he had been. It was soothing to watch him as he listened to you. He rested one hand on your lap and closed his eyes. Before you knew it, he had fallen asleep. You closed the book and marked your spot. Liu was pale and you took the cloth from his face. Hopefully, the fever didn’t last very long but it had also felt wonderful to take care of him. You knew you didn’t owe him anything, but it was nice to be able to return his kindness.
You sat with him for a few more moments then set the book on the nightstand, tucked him in, and left. Now you just had to find and check on Kung Lao. You dragged your bag behind you deciding you would blindly search the same floor. Besides, this would keep you busy and well, a 104 fever was nothing to laugh at.
You didn’t have to search for long. When you turned the corner, there was Kung Lao, walking right toward you.
“Hey you! You seen Liu?” Kung Lao was pale and had bags beneath his eyes. You could tell with one look at him that he was clammy. Even his usually rosy lips were ashen.
“Yes, but he’s asleep. Not feeling well.” You gestured behind you and then stepped closer and poked his chest. “You are as white as a sheet, Kung Lao.”
“I’m fine. Are you doing okay? I was worried after you left, and I came down with this annoying fever.”
“Unlike you, I am actually fine. Whatever this is? It hit you guys. I dodged it.”
“Because you’re already cursed, right? So, you’re used to feeling like garbage all the time?”
“Wow, that makes me feel great. Thanks, Lao. Shouldn’t you be in bed?”
“I need to talk to Liu first.”
“Well, Liu is sleeping. Talk to him tomorrow.”
“Fine,” he whined, pouting and batting his eyelashes. “But it’s important!”
“Is this something that I could help you with in his stead? I’m going to insist that you let him rest.”
“Well, I need to talk to Liu about something, but you can take my temperature so that I don’t have to go back to the stupid infirmary. Then you could lie to them and tell them I’m fine. Wait, scratch that, you’re a terrible liar. They’ll never believe you.”
“I don’t understand why you hate it there so much. They’re nice.” You placed the back of your hand to his forehead and pulled it back in alarm. “Yeah, wow, you are on fire. Please got to bed. I can’t force you, but I can annoy you until you do.”
“Dammit. Stupid bell,” he grumbled.
“Are you sure that you don’t want to go get some medicine to help with it or something?”
“No. I won’t. You took my temperature. That counts as checking in.” Kung Lao snapped and you cocked an eyebrow in surprise. “Fine. Okay. Yeah. You know what? Fine.” He sighed and pulled off his hat long enough just to push his sweaty hair back. “They’re very nice. You’re right. I know that but I don’t like being confined there or poked at or told what to do. And I don’t care for doctors in general.”
“Why? They’re just trying to help.”
He avoided your eyes and looked at his feet with a pout. “Bad memories.”
“Childhood trauma? Lao…”
“Memories of someone who had a rough time with doctors.”
“What? Me? I’m the cause of all this?”
“Of course, you. You used to come back from those stupid doctors crying or feeling worse off from a treatment for something that wasn’t treatable with medicine.” He looked very much like a defiant child in that moment.
“They were trying to help me, Kung Lao. They had never meant to hurt me.”
“Yeah, well I hated watching you suffer. So there.”
“Wow,” you laughed beneath your breath. Honestly, you were a little touched. You’d had no idea that the short time you’d spent together as kids had such a profound impact upon him. It had on you too, you supposed. No man had ever stood up to Kung Lao. At least not before Liu Kang. “It’s kind of sweet.”
“No, it’s very not sweet.”
“It’s a lot sweet, actually.”
“Please stop.”
“Come on, Kung Lao. You need rest.” You decided not to tease him in his moment of weakness. You would hold onto that information for later though. When he was feeling better, all bets were off. You grabbed his arm and began to guide him in the direction that he’d been coming from.
“Where are you taking me? To your room? To force me to rest?” He grinned.
“No, I’m expecting you to guide me back to your room so that I can force you to rest.”
“Oh, that is closer I guess.” He gestured behind him and turned you around and then stopped to sway and regain his balance. He really was sick. You needed to get him to bed. “This way. Though, I don’t need to go to bed. I’m fine.” Despite his objections he led you down the hallway and presumably toward his room.
“Says the man who almost fell over just turning around. Do you want to end up back in the infirmary?”
“No,” he snapped again.
“Then you need to rest, Lao.”
“Yes, mom.” He rolled his eyes but then turned a corner and led you into the room just on the other side of it. You were surprised when he opened the door. It was tidy. And organized. He had a collection of weapons on one wall, a prayer mat that looked like it had never been used, and a series of ropes tied from wall to wall on one side of the room that you guessed were for movement practice. His bed was unmade but everything else was put away.
“I did not expect this.”
“What?”
“I expected chaos.”
“I have been trained my whole life to be disciplined, Y/N. To have control and respect.”
“Not in my experience with you.”
He laughed and then held his sore side and coughed with a whine. You heaved a sigh and he slowly turned his gaze and whined. “Okay, so maybe I need rest.”
“Uh, yeah.” You nudged his shoulder carefully. “You went through so many doors the other day and now… this fever. Rest will help.”
“Fine.” He kicked off his shoes and then crawled into bed. It was clear to you that he was trying to save face by not whining or wincing as he laid back. It was cute. You tucked him in, and he shivered. You sat next to him. He admired you and then nodded toward his side.
“You still confused?”
You turned your gaze and stiffened up. “We don’t need to talk about that right now. You need rest.”
“That’s a big ol’ yes.”
You couldn’t help but smile.
“I’m cold. Thought maybe you could keep me warm.” He batted his eyelashes at you again. “Kiss me and make me feel better?” He couldn’t keep a straight face while he said it.
“I’m leaving now, Lao.” You stood and he reached for your hand to stop you. It was wrapped in gauze.
“Y/N?” His playful tone had faded.
“What?”
“Stay until I’m asleep? No funny business, I promise.”
How could you say no to that? You’d melted. “Yeah, I can do that.” You sat on the floor next to his bed, resting your back against it. You sat quietly and he tucked his arm back beneath the blankets.
“…did you kiss Liu again?”
“You’re making it really hard for me to stay, Lao.”
He laughed. “So defensive. Okay.” He tilted his head toward you so you turned and leaned with your arms resting against his mattress. He’d done the same for you on more than one occasion. Your grandma wouldn’t let him in on days where you’d been particularly ill or had a bad visit to the doctor. So, he had instead climbed in through your bedroom window and sat next to your bed, arms folded just like yours were now. He’d made you laugh. Stayed with you while you’d slept. You’d forgotten about those tender moments. In your grief, you had forgotten many things about him. “Thanks for not bailing on me when I’m frustrating.”
“You should be grateful.” You teased but in truth you had no real desire to leave until after you were certain he was resting. It didn’t take long. Only moments after he’d allowed his body to rest, he’d fallen asleep. He had needed it. You waited some time afterward to make certain he was really sleeping and not just faking it. He couldn’t be trusted.
He was sweet when he slept.
You had to make your choice. There was no more putting it off.
You’d mull over it the remainder of the day while they rested and then you would decide. You weren’t sure how you were going to make that decision or how you would tell them about it but you would figure it out. You weren’t scared of it anymore.

Marinette Dupain-Cheng’s Spite Playlist: Remix CH5
Aaaand it’s finally time. Surprise! Work has been kicking my butt the past couple weeks, so I’ve been really tired and writing has been slow. But we are still plenty ahead of schedule on this project, so don’t worry your pretty little heads! You’ll still get a chapter every Friday! We’re getting closer to the big shifts. Only a couple more chapters until the real fun begins >:)

Chapter 5: when the party’s over
“Good morning, sweetie.”
“Morning, Mom.” Marinette made her way down the stairs, carrying her boots in one hand. She yawned and stooped to kiss her mother’s cheek.
“How was the concert? Did you all have a good time?” her mom asked.
“I had an amazing time! We got to stand backstage for the whole performance, and you’re not gonna believe it! I fixed Jagged's jacket, and to thank me, he invited me to sing a song with him!” Marinette relayed as she grabbed a banana from the fruit bowl.
“Oh, how exciting!” her mom said. “I always knew you would do something amazing.”
“If Eliott hadn't suggested that I ask for tickets, Jagged would have canceled the show. It was really lucky that I was there,” Marinette said, ripping the peel.
“So, I take it everything is going well at your new school?” Her mom took a seat across from her.
“Yeah. I'm making new friends, and I helped someone with their bully,” Marinette answered around a bite.
“Are you happy?”
Marinette slowed her chewing as she mulled over an answer, and sensing her hesitance, her mom placed a hand over hers.
“I know there are things you don't tell me, but I can tell when you're upset,” she said. “You don't have to talk about it if you don't want to. All I care about is that you're happy.”
“It's just that…” She took a deep breath before spilling everything. Following Lila and Adrien, the situation with seats, Lila's threats in the bathroom, Alya's akumatization.
Everything.
Once she started, she couldn't stop. Words tumbled from her mouth in a rapid current until hot tears spilled down her cheeks. Her mother moved to hold her, rubbing her back and kissing her hair.
“When you said you wanted to transfer to this new school to focus on your talents, I had no idea you were leaving behind so much,” her mom said. “You've been carrying all of that weight for so long.”
“I didn't know what else to do,” Marinette whimpered. She sniffled against her mother's shoulder.
“Look at me.” Her mom lifted her chin. “You do so much for other people, and that’s wonderful. But I think it's time that you focus on what makes you happy.”
That was the understatement of the century, but Marinette wasn't going to say as much.
“Your father and I raised you to always help others when you can, but we never wanted it to be at the expense of your own happiness. Sometimes it's okay to do what's best for yourself, and I think that changing schools was a smart decision.” She brushed a tear from Marinette's cheek with her thumb. “I know you're hurting now, and if you ever need anything, Papa and I are always here for you.”
“Thanks, Mama,” Marinette said.
She hugged her mother tightly, her worries washing down her face in thin streaks. For once, she wasn't a superhero with the weight of the world on her shoulders—she was a young girl, abandoned and hurt by the people she once trusted. There wasn’t a clever solution to fix everything. No lucky charm to get her out of a messy situation. It was the hardest lesson she'd ever learned. That sometimes there was no magic to reset everything. Some wounds didn't heal, and some bonds stayed broken.
For the first time since she became Ladybug, Marinette didn't have to carry anyone's burdens but her own. For once, she could just cry.

“Well, class, by an overwhelming majority, I’m happy to announce Lila as our new class representative!” Mlle. Bustier said.
“Mlle. Bustier, I would like a recount!” Chloe demanded.
“You only had two votes, Chloe. I don’t think a recount is necessary.” She gave her a sympathetic smile.
“What? That’s ridiculous! Utterly ridiculous!” Chloe folded her arms over her chest.
“Can you blame us?” Alya asked.
“Yeah, Lila is way cooler than you.” Alix shot back, a sentiment echoed by several others.
Chloe slouched in her seat, seething. “Well, at least Sabrina recognizes my natural leadership,” she said, but her bff averted her gaze. “Don’t tell me you voted for her too?”
“Sorry, Chloe.” Sabrina shrank when Chloe gasped in disbelief.
“Are my ears deceiving me? How dare you!” Chloe slammed her fist on the desk as the whole class erupted into laughter.
“Wow, even Sabrina is tired of you,” Nathaniel said.
Chloe’s jaw clenched, cheeks burning angry and hot. Even the shrimpy comic book nerd was laughing at her. What had the world come to?
“I don’t want to cause any trouble, but I did win fair and square, Chloe. I hope you aren’t too mad at me.” Lila curled her shoulders. “The last thing I want to do is make another enemy like I did with Marinette. I just want to do my best to make your lives as easy as possible here.”
“See? Now that’s natural leadership.” Alya smirked.
“You’re all so lame. I wouldn’t want your votes anyway.” Chloe glared at Lila as class resumed and clicked her stylus pen. Lila wasn’t some nobody like Marinette. She was going to be harder to push around. Regardless, if there was something Chloe wanted, she always got it.

“Congrats on winning class representative,” Alya said at the next class change. “I can go over all of your duties with you this afternoon if you want. Marinette and I used to discuss things over ice cream.”
Lila suppressed an eye roll. The sooner Alya stopped talking about that brat, the better. Things were working out in Lila’s favor already now that she was gone. Pretty soon she’d own this school, and no one would even remember Marinette’s name.
“Actually, I’m recovering from tonsilitis, so my doctor said I’m not allowed to eat any dairy.” Lila touched her throat delicately. “Besides, you and I should pick our own rituals and forget about Marinette.”
“True, I guess.” Alya pursed her lips, and Lila placed a hand on her shoulder.
“I know it’s hard to move on, but honestly, Marinette is nobody,” Lila said. “Though not many people can say they saved an entire village from a stampede, so I guess I shouldn’t be one to judge.”
“Not all of us can be so amazing.” Alya chuckled good-naturedly. “I guess part of me just wishes that Marinette could have gotten to know you and seen how cool you are.”
“Her loss.” Lila shrugged as they entered the locker room.
“Did you see-”
“Is that for real?”
“No way!”
“What’s going on?” Alya asked Adrien and Nino.
“Marinette sang with Jagged Stone last night at his concert here in Paris.” Nino explained, tilting his phone toward them.
“What?” Lila snatched it from him.
“Miraculous, yeah I got this! I gotta confess I feel so strong!”
“She asked him for tickets yesterday on Instagram, and he gave her backstage passes,” Mylène said.
“She looks so happy and confident,” Rose cooed.
“Wouldn’t you be if you got to sing with Jagged Stone on stage?” Alix said.
“I miss her.” Rose slumped, and several classmates followed suit.
“Yeah, me too,” Max echoed.
“Hey, Lila, since you’re such good friends with Jagged Stone, do you think you could get us tickets to his next show?” Kim asked.
Every eye turned to her expectantly, and her annoyance flared. Of course Marinette wouldn’t go quietly. That stupid brat was causing her problems even after she was gone. Lila wasn’t worried though. This situation just needed a little precision…
“Well, I would love to, but celebrities like Jagged really don’t like to give stuff away for free. It’s kind of taboo to even ask. I’m sure Jagged only complied this time because he wanted to save face. He cares about his fans so much, but it’s actually very rude to ask someone for special treatment,” Lila said. “I feel really bad for Jagged being put on the spot like that. She could have ruined his reputation.”
“Wow, I guess I didn’t realize…” Kim rubbed the back of his neck. “I’d hate to put you in that position.”
“I can’t believe Marinette would do such a thing.” Nathaniel glared down at his phone.
“Yeah, way uncool.”
“Everyone, please don’t make a fuss and blame Marinette. She isn’t used to dealing with celebrities. I’m sure she meant no harm.” Lila assured them. “If only she were still here. I have so much I could teach her.”
“We’re so lucky to have you, Lila,” Nino said. He draped an arm across her shoulders.
“Yeah, thanks, Lila!”
“You’re the best.”
Lila smiled as the bell rang, and everyone shuffled off to class. Marinette wasn’t going to get ahead so easily. Everyone was still exactly where Lila wanted them, and she’d make sure it stayed that way.

Later that afternoon, the girls gathered in the bathroom to comfort Mireille who was crying over some stupid argument she’d had with her boyfriend, not that Chloe cared. All she wanted was to find dirt on Lila, so she slipped in unnoticed and hid in an empty stall to listen.
Nothing was right in her school anymore. Lila was stealing away everything she’d worked for, and while everyone was too busy paying attention to her, Chloe barely had anyone to boss around. Something needed to change. Fast. She would have to be smarter if she wanted to dethrone this queen, but she’d have order restored in her kingdom soon enough.
Chloe peeked through the crack in the door as Alya and Lila entered. She was going to find Lila’s weakness, then she was going to take her down.
“What’s going on?” Lila asked.
“Mireille and her boyfriend got into a fight, and she’s pretty upset,” Mylène said in a hushed tone.
“Marinette used to give advice to everyone and help them stay positive.” Rose glanced up at Lila. “Since you’re the new class representative, you can help, right?”
“Well, Mireille isn’t really in our class,” Lila said, but when Mireille let out a loud sob, she scrunched her nose and knelt beside her. “Hey, there’s no sense crying over some boy. I’ve had my heart broken before too, so I know how it feels. Boys are dumb. He’s not worth your tears,” she said. “If he really loved you, he wouldn’t have argued with you, and if he doesn’t love you, then you shouldn’t waste your time crying over him. I think you should move on because there’s no better revenge than finding someone cuter.”
“Yeah, I guess you’re right…” Mireille sniffled and ran a hand across her cheek.
“We can get some ice cream later if you want.” Alya offered.
“Thanks, girls.” Mireille smiled. She turned to the mirror to fix her face as the bell rang.
“See you later.” They all waved goodbye, shuffling to their next class and leaving Mireille alone.
Drat. Chloe would have to figure out another way to get to Lila. Everyone had a weakness, and Chloe would find hers if it was the last thing she did. But first she needed to get out of the bathroom stall.
She peeked through the crack in the door, but Mireille was still pouting over her lock screen—a picture of her boyfriend hugging her lovingly. Too preoccupied with her sadness, she didn’t see the little black butterfly land on her charm bracelet.
Chloe gasped as Mireille transformed before her eyes, closing the stall door before she could be noticed. She hated to admit it, but she actually missed Maribrat Dupain-Cheng. At least with her around giving pep talks to every miserable face she came across, akumas had reached an all-time low at their school. Where was Ladybug when she needed her?

“So, you really saved his whole show?” One of Marinette’s new classmates asked as everyone crowded around her.
“I’m sure they would have found another solution but-”
“Oh, don’t be modest!” Eliott cut her off with an eye roll. “She totally saved the whole show.”
“Yeah, Jagged Stone adores her.” Macy added with a giggle.
“I still think it should have been you up there, Macy. You’re a much better singer than I am.” Marinette rubbed the back of her neck.
“You have such a cute voice! We should sing a duet together for our next art project,” Macy said, and several classmates agreed, much to Marinette’s chagrin.
“Alright, class, everyone take your seats,” Mme. Allard instructed as she strolled into the room. To Marinette’s relief, the group surrounding her dispersed. “Today we will be discussing themes in Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing. Now, who can tell me-”
When Marinette’s phone buzzed in her bag, she checked it under her desk. “An akuma alert!”
“What’s that?” Eliott leaned over.
“Is something the matter, Mlle. Dupain-Cheng? M. Chasse?” Mme. Allard paused her lesson and quirked a brow.
“Uh, there’s an akuma loose in the city, ma’am. Shouldn’t we evacuate?” Marinette held up her phone.
Mme. Allard removed her glasses to read the report. “It says here that lockdown orders are only for the area surrounding Notre Dame. We will continue our lesson until it becomes a threat on this side of town,” she said. “Now, put your phone away. They are prohibited during instruction.”
“Yes, Mme. Allard.” Marinette tucked her phone back into her bag and exchanged a nervous look with Tikki. “Actually, Mme. Allard?”
“What is it, Marinette?”
“Can I be excused to the bathroom?”
“You just went before we got here.” Macy gave her a quizzical look.
“Do you have a documented medical condition that requires you to frequent the restroom, Mlle. Dupain-Cheng?” Mme. Allard asked.
A few classmates giggled, and Marinette’s cheeks burned.
“No, ma’am,” she mumbled.
“Then I think you can hold it until the next class change. Now don’t interrupt my lecture again.”
“Yes, ma’am.” She lowered her head, shooting Tikki an apologetic wince.
Her foot tapped the entire lecture, fingers drumming, pen tapping, eyes watching the clock. Part of her hoped the akuma would make its way to their side of town, but she wasn’t so lucky. When the bell rang, Marinette jumped from her chair and stuffed her tablet into her bag.
“Uh, I’m not feeling too well, so I’m gonna go see the nurse,” she said.
“Do you want us to walk with you?” Eliott offered, but she shook her head.
“I, uh, think I might be getting the flu, and I don’t want to infect you guys, so I’ll see you later.” She raced up the hallway.
The third-floor bathroom was empty when Marinette burst through the doors and ducked into a stall—her first stroke of luck all day.
“Your new school is so strict,” Tikki said.
“We can talk about it later. Transform me!”
Dashing across the rooftops, she hurled her yoyo as far as she could. She just hoped Chat Noir managed to show up and keep things at bay. When she made it to the school, she swooped down just in time to deflect an attack before it hit Chat Noir.
“Oh, nice of you to finally drop in,” he said dryly.
“Sorry, kitty, I got held up,” she said. “You okay?”
He relaxed and offered her a wink. “Better now that you’re here. You had me worried.”
“I’ll try not to make a habit of it.” She vowed, readying her yoyo. “In the meantime, I think we could use a little luck to get us out of this mess.”
“Be my guest.” Chat Noir bowed.
Her magnifying glass made quick work of Heartbreaker, and Mireille blinked in confusion as Ladybug purified the akuma.
“What happened?” Mireille asked, dazed.
“You were akumatized.” Chat Noir explained.
“Oh no!” She covered her face. “I got so angry…Now Jean will never take me back!”
Ladybug placed a hand on Mireille’s shoulder with a reassuring smile. “Hey, arguments in relationships happen. I’m sure you both said things you regret, so why don’t you try talking to him now that you’ve both calmed down?” She advised. “I’m sure you can come to an understanding.”
“I will. Thank you, Ladybug.” Mireille smiled. She waved as Ladybug and Chat Noir vaulted off.
“Thanks for your help, m’lady.” Chat Noir kissed her hand.
“Sorry it took me so long, kitty. I’m glad you were able to manage,” she said. “I’ll see you next time.”
“Don’t be late,” he called as she swung off.
Landing back in the bathroom, she leaned against the wall with a sigh. That was too close. She’d have to figure out a better way to escape to fight akumas, but at least she made it in time for this one.
She slipped into her desk in physics quietly and leaned over to Eliott. “What’d I miss?”
“I thought you had the flu?” Eliott recoiled.
“False alarm, just allergies,” she said.
“Oh, we should go to the spa later! The sauna is really good for your sinuses,” Macy whispered.
“Uh, sure.” Marinette nodded, shifting in her seat as they tuned back into the lesson. She relaxed when no one seemed suspicious of her.
Being a superhero just got a lot more complicated.

“How is your new school?” Adrien asked that afternoon over tea and cookies.
“I’m…adjusting.” Marinette pursed her lips. “How is the old school?”
“Well,” Adrien drawled. “Lila is the new class representative, and she may have convinced people that you almost ruined Jagged’s image.”
“What a brat.” Marinette rolled her eyes. “She’s really class rep?”
“Don’t look at me, I voted for Chloe.” Adrien held up defensive hands.
“Somehow I don’t feel like that’s better.” Marinette leaned against her fist with a smirk.
She fixed her gaze on her cup with a sigh.
“Rose said she misses you.” Adrien offered. “Before Lila convinced her you were clueless about dealing with celebrities.”
“I miss her too,” Marinette said. She traced the rim of her cup with a finger. “I miss everyone, but…”
“I know.” Adrien winced. “For what it’s worth, I thought your performance with Jagged was awesome.”
“It was pretty awesome,” she admitted with a giggle. “And I got you an autograph!”
Adrien pressed his palms together appreciatively as she retrieved a signed poster of Jagged’s face from her desk.
“You rock, Marinette!” he said in his best Jagged impression, then more sincerely added, “I’m glad that you’re doing what’s best for you. If there’s anything I can do to help, just say the word.”
“Thank you, Adrien.” Her cheeks warmed as he held her gaze, her mind clouding into a lovestruck haze. She almost got lost in his gorgeous green eyes, but footsteps pounded up the staircase, breaking her trance.
Marinette jumped as her trapdoor swung open, and a familiar pair of icy blue eyes poked through. It was Chloe Bourgeois, and she was pissed.

“Dude, you need to get out of bed.” Chenle slightly pushed your body. “You’re starting to smell.”
“What’s the point, Chenle?” You whined against your pillow, still a little wet from your mental breakdown an hour ago.
“You still need to go to classes.” He tried pulling your arm, but you didn’t budge.
“I don’t want to see him.”
“You don’t even have classes with him, for god’s sake.” He sighed, desperate to get you out of bed.
“Just leave me alone.” Your phone started buzzing, announcing Lucas’ fifth call of the day. It was barely 9:00 a.m.
“Okay, I’m done with this little attitude of yours.” He grabbed the device and handed it to you. “You’re gonna answer the phone and solve your problems like the goddamn adult you are, or else I might call your parents and tell them you’ve been sleeping with our professor.” You sat straight, eyes wide open.
“You wouldn’t.”
“Try me.”
You groaned and snatched the phone from his hands, pressing the green button with shaky hands.
“Hello?” Your voice came out weaker than expected.
“Y/n? Thank god. Are you alright? You haven’t been answering any of my calls or messages so I was worried something might have happened.” You hummed. “Can we meet?”
“Okay.”
“I can pick you up and then we can go to my apartment-”
“Don’t worry, I’ll ask Chenle to drive me.”
“Alright. See you then.” A soft murmur stopped you from hanging up. “I love you.” You couldn’t bring yourself to reply, instead ending the call.
“You were such a brave girl.” Your friend cooed while wrapping his arms around you.
“Shut up.”
Chenle helped you pick an outfit to ‘show him what he lost’ and drove you all the way to his apartment complex.
“Do you want me to come in with you?” You released your body from the seatbelt.
“It’s okay, lele. Thank you for driving me.” He nodded before you went out.
You took a deep breath, rehearsing the things you wanted to say to Lucas. But as soon as you saw him, your mind went blank. He looked bad, maybe even worse than you.
“Y/n.” He wanted so bad to hug you, to beg you not to leave him. But that would be selfish.
“Lucas.” He let you in, there were two cups of tea right above the coffee table in his living room.
You sat at a safe distance from him.
“I am deeply sorry, y/n. I should’ve told you earlier what was going on, but I was a coward. I knew this would be over the moment you found out.”
“So what is going on Lucas?” Your voice was calm as you picked up the teacup and brought it to your lips. Those soft, sweet lips.
“There are some things you don’t know about me.” He licked his lips nervously. “For instance, my parents come from wealthy families, and I’m their only child, therefore I’m...”
“The heir.” You completed, feeling a knot forming in your stomach.
“Yes.” He feared so much that you’d see him with different eyes. “My parents wanted me to have someone to guide me and support me for when I take over the family company. The woman you saw last Friday was one of their friends’ daughter.”
He waited for a reply that never came. How could you even answer to that?
“Say something, please.” He finally scooted closer to you, taking your hand between his. His heart broke at the sight of your teary eyes. “Anything, I’m begging you.”
“I understand your decision.” He expected anything but that. “They’re your parents after all, you want to make them proud. I just wish you’d told me earlier, it would’ve been easier to end things between us.”
“I’ll leave them.”
“What?”
“Just ask me to stay with you and I’ll abandon everything.” By the look in his eyes, you knew he meant it. “Ask me to stay with you.” It sounded more like a plead.
“No.” It took all of your inner strength to get that single word out.
“Y/n, I-”
“Lucas, don’t ask me to decide on your life when I barely know what to do with my own.” Yes, your words were hurtful, but you weren’t wrong. “I don’t want to be the girl who made you drift away from your family.”
At some point, you both had started crying, knowing that there was no way you could fix your relationship.
“I’m so sorry, y/n.” He apologized for the millionth time. “I never meant to hurt you.”
“I know you didn’t.” You held no grudge against him, after all, you would’ve probably done the same if you were in his situation. “Just promise me one thing. You’ll do what’s best for yourself, not for me or for your parents.” He nodded, eyes watering. “I should probably leave now.”
“Wait.” He held onto your wrist, his lost puppy eyes looking directly into your own. “If it isn’t too much to ask, can I have one last kiss?”
It was indeed to much to ask, but you didn’t care. You wanted to feel the warmth of his lips against yours one last time, so you went for it.
Straddling his lap, you grabbed the back of his head to pull him even closer. It was a kiss filled with passion and love, it was your own way of saying goodbye. It took a while for you to pull away.
“Thank you.” He murmured, hands caressing your hips. “I love you so much, y/n. I promise I’ll be back, okay?”
“I love you too, Lucas.” With that being said, you stood up. Avoiding to look back, you made your way out.
Chenle was still outside when you came down, leaning against his car with his arms wide open for you.
You didn’t hesitate to crash your body against his, crying your eyes out as he combed your hair with his fingers.
“I’m here for you. Always.”
(...)
3 years later...
“Where are you?”
“I’m picking up my luggage, see you at the parking lot?”
“Okay.”
A few minutes later, the tall, dark haired man walked out of the airport. A sports bag hanging from his left shoulder while the opposite hand dragged the suitcase.
“Kun!”
“Hey, man.” They greeted each other with a big hug. “I missed you.”
“Sorry, I wanted to visit earlier but work has been a bitch.” Specially when he didn’t even like what he was doing.
“Same here, it seems like the students get more unbearable with every semester.” He helped Lucas load his belongings into the truck. “So how’s Mrs. Wong been? Are you getting along well?”
“Shut up.” He rolled his eyes while getting inside the car. “Last week, my mom asked us about our sex life. She was like ‘I expect to have grandkids by the end of next year’, the last time we kissed was in our wedding.”
“So you’re gonna be a dad?” He mocked, starting the engine.
“Not from her kids at least.” Kun knew exactly what that meant.
“Lucas, you should really get over her. You’re a married man.”
“Not for much longer.”
“What do you mean?”
“We’ve been seeing a lawyer, none of us is happy with our relationship and we’ve already wasted three years of our life in it. It’s time to end it.”
“And what do your parents think about this?”
“They don’t have a say in this matter. I’m and adult and it’s my future we’re talking about.”
“And why couldn’t you come to this conclusion three years ago? You would’ve saved me all the suffering from listening to you ranting about how much you missed y/n.” Lucas hit his arm playfully, a big smile on his face as the thought of you crossed his mind.
He unlocked his phone, your picture was still his wallpaper.
“Has she graduated yet?”
“She’s actually doing her master’s degree. She’s an exceptional student, a lot of important labs already have their eyes on her.”
“Of course they do, they’d be stupid if they didn’t.” His finger traced your figure, smiling proudly at the image.
“Oh look at you, you haven’t stopped loving her one bit.”
“Stop it.”
“Oh, by the way, we need to stop by the campus. I have to pick up exams to check them at home.” Lucas’ eyes lit up at the possibility of meeting you.
“Do you think she’ll be there?”
“Probably, she’s usually devouring a book at the library or at the lab. Sometimes she stops by at my office for tutoring or my opinion on something.”
“You better not have tried something with her.”
“Actually...”
“What?”
“Just kidding, she’s my student, nothing more.”
“She better be.”
The campus was thankfully near the airport. Lucas almost fell as he exited the vehicle, eager to see you once again after all those years.
“Careful, give me a call when you’re done looking for her.”
“Sure.” He replied, already running away from the car towards the library.
He met a lot of his old students on the way, briefly greeting them before resuming his search. You weren’t there, so he decided to try at the labs.
You weren’t there either, but your ID and belongings were. You looked different in your picture, you looked so mature now, but your innocent aura was still intact.
“Are you looking for y/n?” One of the students asked as soon as he saw Lucas eyeing her ID. “She just left.”
“Oh, thank you.” He replied, still not taking his eyes off your mesmerizing face.
His phone vibrated.
‘She’s in my office.’ His heart sped up and his legs automatically started moving.
On his way to Kun’s office he tried to think of ways to greet you. Would a simple ‘hello’ be okay? Or would it be appropriate to tell you how much he missed you?
His mind was so busy he didn’t realized he was already in front of the office. He took a deep breath before opening the door. Your back was facing him while you passionately explained Kun the results of your experiment, not even realizing who just made an appearance.
“Y/n.” Lucas called from the door frame, causing you to interrupt your explanation.
“Yes?” You finally turned around. “Lucas?”
Your hair was tied up in a messy hair bun, a pair of safety glasses covering your eyes and a stained lab coat around your body. You looked like a mad scientist, a cute mad scientist.
“Hi.” Was the only thing he could pronounce. ‘How pathetic’ he thought.
“Long time no see.” You smiled so warmly, as if he hadn’t abandoned you to marry another woman. “Have you been well?”
“Y-yes, I mean, as well as I can be.” Your eyes wandered to his hand, taking notice of the golden ring around his finger.
“I’m glad.” You dedicated him another smile before turning back to face your professor. “I’ll send you the draft of my report as soon as I finish it. Excuse me.” You grabbed your laptop from the desk and went out, murmuring a small ‘bye’ to Lucas on your way out. The scent of your perfume striking him with a wave of nostalgia.
“Well, I don’t know what I was expecting but this was definitely not it.”
“I don’t know why I thought we would both burst into tears and say how much we missed each other.” He awkwardly scratched the back of his neck.
“She’s probably going back to the lab, in case you want to talk to her again.” He nodded. “I’ll wait for you so we can head to my house.”
“Alright, I’ll try to be quick.” He went out again, this time at a slower pace.
He went back to the labs, your voice receiving him as soon as he crossed the entrance. Most of the students had already left, it was already getting dark.
“Zhong Chenle, get out of here, you’re distracting me.”
“But, y/n, I’m hungry and I don’t want to go alone to the cafeteria.”
“Not my problem.” You were focused on writing your report, the safety glasses still on your face.
“Uhm, are you busy?” Lucas knocked on the door, catching yours and Chenle’s attention.
“You’re back.” His eyes were wide open. “You know what? I’ll go get our food, see you.”
“Coward.” You muttered. “Come in, Lucas.” Even though there was no hint of anger in your voice, the fact that you were calling him Lucas and not Xuxi meant something bad.
“What are you working on, huh?” He says on the stool beside yours, taking a look at your screen.
“Just trying to find a cure for AIDS, nothing special.” You typed a few more words before saving the file. “What did you want to talk about Mr. Wong?”
“I think you know what.”
“I think so.” You removed the glasses, red marks over the area where they used to be.
“Cute.” He though out loud, causing you to touch your face, the color of your cheeks becoming pinker with every second. It was amazing how much of an effect his words still had on you.
“S-sorry, I wore these for more than five hours.”
“Don’t worry, I know what it’s like.” He tapped his fingers against the table. “Three years huh?”
“Yeah, seems like it was yesterday when we...” You chose not to finish the sentence, knowing that it would probably make you cry.
“I missed you.” His hand reached out for yours, the golden band around his finger burning your skin. “There hasn’t been a single day where I haven’t thought about you. You managed to take over my mind in a way that no one else could ever do.”
“We can’t do this.” With your free hand, you gently removed his hand from yours. “You’re married.”
“I’m getting divorced soon.” Your heart thumped so loudly against your chest that you were afraid he’d hear it. “We just need to fix some things and this whole thing will be over.”
You pulled out your notebook from your bag, tearing a piece of paper to write in it. You handed it to him with a genuine smile.
“Here’s my new number. Give me a call when you finish fixing those things, I’ve already waited for three years, so what’s a few more months?”

Jeremy Meets Helpy
Chapter 2: Helpy Visits Jeremy Again
Jeremy wakes up one day to Helpy being not only alive and well, but even homeless. So Jeremy takes the little bear under his wing and keeps the bear as a child-like friend.
Jeremy waited patiently for Helpy to return. He worked, came home, and grew a little disappointed everyday that Helpy didn’t come. Tonight was another one of those nights. Helpy didn’t return and Jeremy, again, felt hurt by it. It’s been 3 weeks since Helpy left him. And every day felt more and more sad. Jeremy decided to just hop into bed and sleep his sadness away. He wanted Helpy back really badly, but he knew he was probably very busy.
So...he slept the day away...waiting for Helpy to return...
[The next morning]
Jeremy groaned and slowly started to wake up. The sun had woken him more than he expected.
“Mornin’ Jemy!” something said to him.
Wait...Jemy?!
WAIT A SECOND-
“HELPY?!” Jeremy got up, pulled his covers off and ran to the kitchen. But…
The kitchen was empty.
“Mmmmph! Mmm mmmph!” something said all muffled.
Jeremy turned around and immediately noticed that the blankets were moving. The blankets were flopping around and...shaking like a dog?
Jeremy walked up to the pile of blankets that he just threw off himself, and removed the covers.
The purple bear that was standing there, threw his arms up. “JEMY!”
“HELPY!” Jeremy picked up the bear and spun around with the bear up in the air. Helpy let out little cheers and whooos of excitement as the bear flew around in Jeremy’s arms. Then, Jeremy brought Helpy into a BIG bear hug. “I missed you so much!” Jeremy told him. Jeremy removed him from his arms. “Don’t ever leave like that again! I didn’t know when you were gonna come back! I didn’t know what happened to you, or if you were broken, lost, hurt-” Jeremy was tearing up and starting to cry. “Don’t do that again...please.” Jeremy begged.
“Helpy okay. Helpy here.” The bear told him, placing both its hands onto Jeremy’s. “Helpy miss you.” The bear admitted.
Jeremy smiled through his tears. “Jemy missed you too…a lot.” Jeremy admitted back.
“Helpy home. for ever.” Helpy told him.
“Really?” Jeremy asked, not fully believing it.
“Yeah! Helpy stay now for ever!” Helpy declared.
Jeremy looked at him with some hope in his eyes. “Are you sure? Don’t you...have a home?” Jeremy asked.
“Jemy home. Henry friend.” Helpy said.
Henry? As in…
“Henry Emily?” Jeremy asked.
Helpy looked at him with his eyebrows raised in...sadness. Then, the bear looked down. “Henry…”
Jeremy blinked and realized that Helpy was feeling more than just sad...he was distressed!
Jeremy quickly grabbed this week’s newspaper from the table and opened it to look for some clues on the matter. Anything to tell him what he was sad for. But all he could find was an article on...a building fire that killed two people and...roughly 50 animatronics?!
Jeremy gasped and covered his mouth...Henry was one of the deaths…
And Helpy was mourning him!
“Oh Helpy…” Jeremy wrapped his arms around Helpy and hugged him tightly. “I’m so sorry.”
“Henry...Henry dead...Helpy sad…” Helpy told him.
Jeremy held onto him and cuddled him as he mourned for a while. Helpy was holding onto Helpy for a while, looking sad. Jeremy wasn’t sure if Helpy was actually feeling sadness, or whether his sadness was simulated. But that didn’t matter to Jeremy. He knew that Helpy was experiencing sadness and needed time to mourn.
“Okay. Helpy better. Home with Jemy!” Helpy declared.
“I...Really? You’re actually over it now?” Jeremy reacted.
“Helpy better. Play play play!” Helpy declared happily.
“Play?! Already? I need to eat some breakfast first, little man!” He reacted.
“Picky ups?” Helpy asked.
Jeremy giggled and nodded. “Okay.” Jeremy picked up Helpy, carried him to the kitchen and grabbed a banana for breakfast.
“Nana!” Helpy reacted.
“Yup...a banana.” Jeremy replied.
Jeremy carried Helpy around while he ate the banana bit by bit. The banana was a little soft and brown, but it was at its best state: with spotted brown on the yellow peel.
As soon as the spotted peel was thrown into the garbage, Jeremy lifted Helpy up, and cuddled him into his arms like a baby. While being held, Jeremy tickled the animatronics little belly. “Tickle time for Helpy!” Jeremy declared.
“Tihihihihicklehehes fohohor hehehelpyhyhy!” He reacted, covering his mouth with both his hands.
“Kitchy kitchy kitchy kitchy koo!” Jeremy teased him.
Belly giggled and rolled all around like a little panda bear. He looked so happy to be tickled like this! It was evident on Helpy’s little cheeky grin. Helpy looked to Jeremy with appreciation in his eyes.
Then, he got up. “Oh oh oh! Cuddle tickles!” He declared. “Cuddle tickles cuddle tickles!”
“Oookaaay!” Jeremy grabbed Helpy into his arms and started skittering his fingers all over Helpy’s sides and belly. Helpy squealed and giggled loudly. He wiggled and clapped his arms around while kicking his feet like a wild animal.
Oh…wait…he’s supposed to be modeled after a bear.
Riiiiight.
Jeremy booped Helpy’s little nose, and jumped in surprise the moment his little nose made a squeak! Helpy’s nose squeaks too?! What a surprise! Helpy was seriously an entire package of cute created to fit one being! And it was such a joy!
Jeremy resumed tickling Helpy for a little bit longer. He went for his sides like he usually did, and even went for his armpits for a few minutes.
“EEEHEHEHEHEHEHEHE! JEHEHEHEMYYY!” Helpy laughed.
“What? Ticklish much?” Jeremy teased.
“YEHEHEHEHES! VEHERY TIHIHICKLIHIHISH!” Helpy laughed.
Jeremy nodded and moved down to Helpy’s rib area. “Here. Is that better?” Helpy asked.
Helpy nodded and leaned his head against Jeremy’s chest. “Yehehehah. Behehetter.” He replied calmly.
Jeremy held onto Helpy for a little while and started singing a little tune he remembered from when he was younger. He was so happy and thankful to have Helpy back with him. It was like a big brick fell right off his shoulders and into the abyss. Any sign of the brick had fallen away. He felt like a feather...He felt like he could maybe even fly with Helpy around him.
Helpy was more than just a companion for him. Helpy was like the best friend he’s been yearning for since he was younger. It was a big blessing to have such a complicated robot as a best friend. You wouldn’t be able to tell if any of the feelings were true or simulated. So, you’d just handle them like you’d handle any human emotion: With love and understanding.
“Hehehehelpy tihihicklehed ohohout nohohow.” Helpy told him.
Jeremy snapped out of his thoughts and very quickly stopped tickling him.
“My turn to tickle!” Helpy moved to Jeremy’s belly, lifted the shirt up, and blew a BIG raspberry onto his belly.
“eeEEEEEK!” Jeremy squealed, falling flat onto his back.
“Tickles tickles tickles!” Helpy fluttered his left hand fingers on Jeremy’s sensitive tummy and squeezed his left side with his right hand.
“OHOHOHO MAHAHAHAN! YOHOHOU GOHOHOT MEHEHEHE!” Jeremy declared.
“I gotcha! You my tickle me Jemy!” Helpy told him.
Jeremy laughed even more at that. Did he just reference those Tickle Me Elmo’s?!
“Oh, I’m your tickle me elmo now?” Jeremy asked.
“Tickle tickle tickle!” Helpy declared, tickling his belly again.
“EEEhehehehehahahahahahaha! Yohohou’re juhuhust mahahakihing uhup for lost tihihime!” Jeremy reacted.
Helpy nodded and took in a deep breath. He blew a big raspberry onto Jeremy’s belly, defying all the laws of animatronic logic in 5 seconds or less.
“EEEEAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! HEHEHEHEHEY! HOHOHOW AHAHARE YOHOHOHOU-” Jeremy yelped as he fell to the floor from all the tickles.
“Surprise!” Helpy yelled happily, standing in front of Jeremy’s face. “Lost time tickles! Jemy tickles!” Helpy shoved his hand into Jeremy’s armpit and skittered all over.
Jeremy was a cackling, wiggling mess…
Indeed, Jeremy was a big wig-waggling mess…
And we all know Jeremy was a wabble-jabbling mess of a being then…
[That night:]
Jeremy was groaning and covering his ears. There were so many people honking their horns in the middle of the street that night...
Wait...Where was Helpy?
Jeremy took off his eye cover and looked around for the bear. “Helpy?”
He looked around the room while more beeping sounds went off on the road from the living room window. He groaned and slowly covered his ears again. The beeping sounds were getting louder and closer to his room…
Wait…
Jeremy looked up and noticed the bear standing at the door. “Oh...Hi Helpy.”
Another honk went off from the window.
{HONK HONK} Helpy’s horn went.
Jeremy groaned and covered his eyes. “What are you doing honking this time a night?”
Another honk went off.
{HOOOOOONK!}
Jeremy growled and held his head. “Stop honking at the cars!”
“They honk first!”
“They’re-...They’re honking at the cars to go faster. They’re not honking at you-”
{HONK HOOOONK!}
*Honk!*
Helpy laughed. “Hahahaha! I honk first!”
Jeremy growled and walked up. “Come on Helpy. Off to bed.”
“No!” Helpy honked his horn in his face.
“OOW! MY EARS!” Jeremy yelled, dropping the bear.
Helpy fell onto the ground with a loud crack sound filling the room for only a second…
Jeremy sighed. His neck broke again. “Greeeeat. Come on Helpy...Fix your neck.” Jeremy ordered. “Then let’s sleep for a while. And no more honking.”
Helpy nodded and snapped his neck back in place like he usually did. Then, Helpy walked himself to Jeremy and raised his arms up. “Up up up?”
Jeremy smiled and knelt down, picking up the bear and placing him on his hip like he would for a toddler.
“Ready for beddy bye?” Jeremy asked. “Would you like me to read you a story? I might have some old classic books in my bookshelf to read to you.” Jeremy asked.
Helpy nodded his head. “Story! Story!”
Jeremy grabbed an old fairytale from his bookshelf and dusted it off a little. It was an old copy of the Paddington Bear story.
Jeremy sat his pillow up and sat down with Helpy in his arm. “A Bear Named Paddington...By Michael Bond and Peggy Fortnum.” Jeremy read the cover.
“Bear!” Helpy reacted, pointing to the bear on the cover.
“Yeah, that’s a bear. A brown bear, to be specific. He used to ride a train and would stop at Paddington Station in London, England, in the UK.” Jeremy explained.
Jeremy flipped to the first page. “Mr. and Mrs. Brown first met Paddington on a railway platform. In fact, that was how he came to have such an unusual name for a bear, for Paddington was the name of the station.” Jeremy read.
“Choo choo!” Helpy said as Jeremy paused.
“Yup! Choo choo!” Jeremy imitated before resuming to read. “The Browns were there to meet their daughter Judy, who was coming home from school for the holidays. It was a warm summer day and the station was crowded with people on their way to the seaside…”
Jeremy kept on reading the book for a long while till he finished it up. He had grown quite fond of such an old classic, and had forgotten how nostalgic it made him feel. Jeremy closed the book and found that Helpy had shut himself down halfway through the book. Jeremy smiled and laid the bear down, before placing the book onto the bedside table and laying down. With Helpy being a new roommate of sorts, Jeremy treated him like a special little Paddington bear of his own. Despite the robotic features, Helpy was a little like a toddler in his eyes. And Jeremy wa so glad to have him...forever now.
Also, this is now a series, known as Jeremy Meets!
