Archetypes | The Wild Ingenue

When she wakes: she wakes heavy with renewed purpose, the world is not ready for the alley cat's soft feet, or the pinched, Rorschach marks her nails bite into her supple bruised thighs. 

She's fooled them all with her Versace mother of pearls, she had herself fooled too--but now the gauntlet's run, the clock strikes twelve and she finally knows the answer, she knows which way the wretched garden lawn of her wayward heart lies.

The cast of her skin clatters to the floor like spilled, pearlescent pennies, her nails run rivers through the fine vestal gossamer worn for her husband and out flies the heavy gilded collar.

okay I have a silly question. the 'king and lionheart' thing. I assumed that was like an arthurian legend thing, but when I look it up, all that comes up is stuff about a song. that can't be what it's from, right??

okay after like 10 minutes of dicking around on google I think that the song might actually be the origin of that phrase lol. I know the song but I associate the phrase with fandom tropes; I mostly saw it used in the merlin fandom and I wouldn't be surprised if they took that song and ran with it and it sort of spiraled out into a multi-fandom trope from there.

I personally haven't really heard the term used outside of fandom spaces, so... maybe we really do have of monsters and men to thank???

Here we go with the huge tags list again! so, if you don’t know, i have a bunch of themed tags that i use for different vibes and situations. originally, it was because the very first version of fluoresensitive was a roleplay inspiration blog for Black people, because i never saw any like, aesthetic posts just for us, and i wanted a black only vibe and space. i don’t rp any more, so now it’s just vibes and pretty pictures, but i still like to keep up the dramatics as a nod to long defunct hella bougie tags a la, @okayophelia and @neverfeedthesarcophagi​. um, okay, anyways, now that i’ve explained myself... here are the tags, updated!

SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES: witches, hags and crones, a real baba yaga tag

CHERCHEZ LA FEMME: a tag for dangerously unhinged women, they’re covered in blood and holding knives, and i love them for that

GOD IT’S BRUTAL OUT HERE! Honestly, the kids aren’t alright. They’re using their telekinetic powers to wreak havoc on their bullies and summoning demons in the bathroom.

HAUNT ME THEN: a ghostly tag, very haunted

I AM MY MOTHER’S CHILD: mommy issues tag, simply put.

SINS OF THE FATHER: daddy issues tag, for equality and drama

BAD BLOOD: and a general family disorder tag, i’m talking sister against sister, brother against brother, we love to see it (in fiction)

FEAR NOT! a tag dedicated entirely to angels, i love a biblical angel

NOBODY (NO BODY): a tag for depersonalization, like when you feel all float-y and far away from your body. like how sometimes you’ll look in the mirror and not recognize the person who’s looking back at you, so foreign they are to you

EMERALD CITY SEQUENCE: old school glamour, 70s vibes, inspired by the emerald city sequence from ‘the wiz’!

In 2014 I put together a not-for-profit zine with Captain America: The Winter Soldier meta and artwork, mostly as practice to learn InDesign but also because there was a lot of good stuff coming out!

I asked and received permission to use art and meta, I put the pdf together. And then I just. Idk, forgot??? UH. So this is awkward and stuff, but uh. Here it is, available for free download.

oh gosh, nonny, you’re so sweet - thank you so much!!! i don’t know that i’m the most qualified person to give advice on writing, but i’ll do my best. :3

now look, improvement takes time. it isn’t gonna happen overnight, and like any other craft it takes years of practice and hard work. you’re gonna look back on your old writing and cringe, and you’re gonna have days where the words just won’t come to you. take a break, take a walk. let your brain rest for a while. remember that a first draft is just that - a first draft. it won’t be perfect. first drafts never are.

read. read anything and everything - from classic novels to children’s books and everything in between. read to expand your vocabulary - to fill yourself up with words until you’re bursting at the seams. read from every genre. read fanfic. take a look at your favorite authors and pick out what you like about their writing - is it the way they set a scene? the way they describe someone’s appearance? the way they evoke emotion? pick their writing apart and try to emulate it. try to pinpoint why it’s so effective. build sentences the way they build sentences, and describe scenes the way they describe them. look at the words they use, and use them. 

write. not just fanfic, but papers too. i’m long past my school days, but there’s something to be learned from writing academic essays and research papers. develop your expository skills. learn how to write a compelling argument. listen to your teachers and professors when they give you advice and point out clunky sentences. review your work when they tell you that your wording is awkward, or that your reasoning is flawed. i’ve been blessed with incredible english teachers throughout my life, and i’m a better writer because of them. you learn and you grow from every experience. accept the advice and constructive criticism. you’re going to get lots of it over time, and eventually you’ll figure out what works for you and what doesn’t. 

[for example, one of my favorite pieces of advice that i got in high school is to write three long sentences followed by one short one. now, i don’t always heed that advice exactly, but it sure does help when i start writing run-ons and overusing commas and the m-dash. at least i’m aware of the problem, lmao.]

and perhaps most importantly, never forget that you’re writing for you at the end of the day. you’re writing because you love writing, and because you have stories that only you can tell. stories that only you, with your particular flair and set of experiences, can breathe life into. never forget that.

i wanna leave you with a quote from @okayophelia that i came across AGES ago, which i think about a lot and still resonates with me to this day:

read like a motherfucker. don’t learn from your betters, just inhale them. imprint rhythms and chokeholds and things-that-shoot-up-your-spine into your fingertips. read how romance novels create characters so vivid you want to fuck them and have them be fucked. read brutal minimalism and extravagant prose. read children’s books to remember about wonder and post-modernists to remember about freedom. read because at some point you will be so full with the consumption of language you will need to start pouring it back out again.

write like an asshole. write things when you’ve stayed up so late you are delirious. write when you’re drunk. write when a song has made you feel catastrophic. write when you’re famished. write when you’re spitting mad. write so you don’t curl up in the bottom of a shower and sob. write when people have torn strips off you. write when you’re high on adrenaline. write because there’s a monster on your back and you need to make it real and separate from your soul. eventually, you will not need any of these props to make you brave enough.
