“Love recognizes no barriers, it jumps hurdles, leaps fences, penetrates walls to arrive at its destination, full of hope.”- Maya Angelou
You woke up after barely a few hours of sleep, getting up and ready to put the final touches on the present you had for Okoye. It was your first (technically second) Valentine's Day together and you were beyond excited to spoil your love.
You had the whole day planned, where you would pamper and spoil her to the highest degree. And she didn’t have to do anything. Okoye was vaguely aware of your plans since you had told her not to plan anything at all, but she was nowhere near aware of the true detail that you had put into planning the perfect day.
You had silently been planning the day since the new year started, getting the reservations needed and asking around for people’s help when necessary. Now, people were sick of you bothering them for things specifically for this day, but it was finally here, and you were excited to allow Okoye to take a break from constantly working and just have a nice relaxed day off.
She had training in the early morning, so she was gone. It was the one non-negotiable when it came to her not working, so you let her have it. It gave you an extra hour to yourself for the final details.
You were completely prepared to make a fool out of yourself today, and you planned to have Okoye join you in the foolishness.
You got into your planned clothing, and got your equipment to leave your house.
As you entered the palace grounds, you got Aneka’s help in setting your first event up. Okoye was at the training grounds, with a group of new Dora Milaje.
Just as you had anticipated, her back was turned away from you. Aneka held a bouquet of flowers 5 times bigger than her head, while you handled the microphone and speaker that you were to use.
Stopping in the middle of the outside field, you put your things down, and began to play your music. Even before you had increased the volume on it, Okoye had turned, recognising your favourite song from anywhere. She stood, smiling at you as the intro played away.
Then, you started to hum, an indication that you were about to sing. Her eyes grew wide as the rest of the Dora Milaje, and a few other people from inside came out to see what the noise was about. You grew a bit more nervous seeing the turnout, but seeing as the elders were yet to arrive, you had no reason to remain respectable.
“I just wanted to dedicate this song to my one love.” you said, in a deep voice.
It was right before you belted out the love song that you constantly played at home, singing like a performer at a full stadium on a Wakandan Public Holiday.
Whether you could carry a note was irrelevant at the time, although you thought you had a decent enough voice.
As the chorus came along, you put your hand out to Okoye, who was being cheered out by your audience. She walked to you, taking your extended hand as you got into the second verse.
With her close to you, you could see her face completely flushed with shock. You knew for a fact that internally, she was blushing, even if she would later use her melanated skin to deny it.
You got a bit slower during the second verse, singing your own version of the song. Changing the lyrics to ones that you knew Okoye would love.
Halfway through the verse, even she forgot that you had company around, letting you finish the song with her in your embrace. She loved when you expressed your extra loving side. Even when you were making a fool of yourself. She didn’t hold the same belief that your voice was the best, but that didn’t matter. As long as you were the one singing to her, she didn’t care how many notes you missed.
As the song came to a close, your eyes were both closed. She whispered in your ear as she opened her eyes. “We’ll work on that high note.” you gasped dramatically as she laughed at her words.
“ I just serenaded you in public. Give me some credit.” you smiled a toothy smile as she kissed you softly.
As you untangled from your position. You got back to business, making Okoye stand in front of you as you held your mic to your lips again.
“On this beautiful day, I just wanted to ask this amazing love of my life a question everyone.”
Okoye's eyebrows raised in confusion.
“Will you… go to breakfast with me and spend the day as my valentine?” you said.
She chuckled, nodding her head. You put the mic down, taking the bouquet from Aneka and thanking her. Okoye gasped at the size of it, definitely questioning why that was the size you chose.
“You’re quite the valentine.” she complimented.
“I’ll say. This is just the beginning, my love.”
By now, the crowd had dissipated, but you knew that a few videos were taken, so everyone would know about it at some point.
You directed Okoye to a smaller dining area in the palace, where a private breakfast had been prepared.
You sat down next to each other and ate, enjoying the casual conversation that came, as though you hadn’t just done what you had.
“Is the whole day going to be like this?” She asked.
“Like what? Romantic?” you got worried, because it was going to be filled with romance, and if she didn’t want that then the entire day would be terrible for her.
“No. I know it’s going to be romantic. But. is it going to be as public as that?” She hesitated to say it, not wanting to ruin any one of your plans.
You shook your head in relief. “ No! That was the only thing. I had to start off big. Everything else will mostly just be the two of us.”
“Mostly?”
“Yes, mostly. I couldn’t plan a great day without any sort of help.”
She nodded, not being able to argue with logic. Her morning training stiffness had already faded in your presence. Having a nice breakfast with her was rare. She would usually obsess about you having fainted at night, or she was gone to the palace and you were busy with your own work.
It was a rare moment where none of those worries were mentioned, mostly because you had banned her from asking if you were okay at any point in the day. You wanted just one day where she didn’t have to worry about you.
The two of you finished and got ready, while you handed Okoye the clothes she needed to change into. It was still training garments, but a lot less casual.
She gave you eyes of question when you handed them to her but obliged and wore the clothes before taking your hand in hers and allowing you to lead the way.

Thirty Minutes Later
“Where are we going, Y/n?” Okoye asked you as you continued to walk to your destination. When you told her that you would take a quick walk to your next planned date, she thought you meant that it was 5 minutes away. She didn’t realise that you actually planned to take an entire walk.
“We’re almost there, Sthandwa. Not even 5 minutes away, I promise.” you responded.
She sighed, not saying anything else. She really wanted to know if you were okay, having travelled by foot for many metres, but you had made her promise not to ask you anything about the way you felt physically for the whole day.
She was a woman who kept to her word, but she hated every second of it. She knew that her concern could sometimes be overbearing and she knew that she needed to work on it, but she just wanted to make sure that you were okay. It had been many months since she had found out, but she still worried like the first time it had happened.
She couldn’t help her protectiveness for you. Her love for you was just too strong for her to want to let anything happen to you.
You could tell that she wanted to ask. She barely went that long without doing a check in with you, but you loved how she respected her promise to you.
As you slowed down, Okoye followed you, not having a clue where the two of you were. It was only when you were only a few metres away from your destination that Okoye was connecting the dots on what you had planned for your portion of the day.
She stopped dead in her tracks, grabbing your arm to stop you while giving you a bewildered look.
"Y/n. Why are we in front of Wakanda's most prestigious dance instructors' house?" She asked you, Watching you struggle to find a reasonable answer as you smiled mischievously.
"I booked a lesson for us. I thought it would be fun. We don't do these things that often."
She let out a chuckle, "We both have 2 left feet. Why do you think we of all people should do this?"
"Like I said, I thought, and still think that it will be fun."
“Hmm.” She scoffed, letting you lead the way to the entrance. You gladly knocked on the door of the home, not having any fear after your singing. Not a single other plan for the day scared you now that you were done with that.
You were excitedly greeted by S'Yata, Wakanda’s famed dance instructor. She specialised in choreographing wedding dancing, and she was well known for making the most sensual first dances for the marrying couples that hired her.
Okoye again wanted to know why you were there if you had no plans to get married soon, and even if you did, she would never want to do a first dance choreographed by S’Yata at her wedding. They were known to be difficult to the average couple, but the two of you were not an average couple. Not when it came to dancing. One thing that the two of you desperately lacked was rhythm. Granted, it wasn;t as bad as Okoye made it in her head. You could dance a little. And she could move her body on command too.
It was just the formal stuff that the two of you weren’t too good at. After a tragic wedding dance proved this point, the two of you had refrained from doing any form of wedding dances ever since.
“Let’s get started, shall we?” S’Yata said, welcoming you inside. You looked back at Okoye and gave her a not so reassuring lopsided smile.
1 hour later…
"Okoye you're too far away. Come closer." You instructed. The two of you had finally got the basics to the dance down, and you didn’t want to lose the flow.
"I'm as close as I'll allow myself to be in public, Y/n. This position already feels extremely indecent for others to see." Okoye said, looking at S’Yata as she said it.
You laughed, seeing what she was trying to imply by 'public'. To her defence, the two of you were more minimalistic in your public displays of affection. And you had promised to keep the rest of the day less public. But S’Yata was only one person, and you really wanted to get the dance right.
The two of you were already chest to chest and leg to leg, so there wasn’t much room to spare. But Okoye needed to hug you closely as you slowly swayed.
“Please. For your Valentine?” You asked, kissing her cheek sweetly.
Instantly, she hugged you closely, and you swayed back and forth.
“I love you.” you whispered.
“I love you more.” she said.
You stayed like that, even getting enough flow for S’Yata to just leave the two of you in her studio, allowing you to enjoy the moment.
Tumblr media
“You’re going to like what we do next, Okoye. I promise. Just the two of us from here on out.”
Okoye smiled at that, still winded from the dancing. You seemed to be in high spirits, and you hadn’t slowed down to even catch your breath.
When the quinjet arrived in the sky, and landed not too far from the two of you, She got excited once again. You walked her inside, and she saw how advanced the quinjet was. It was far more advanced than the ones that were used currently.
“Shuri allowed me to use the new prototype for a few hours.” You explained.
“How did you know about this before I did? I’m the General.”
“Being noisy comes with perks, Okoye.” you joked.
The two of you sat in the pilot seats that were situated in front, wanting to see the view, but you kept the jet on autopilot like it had arrived, wanting to enjoy seeing wakanda from the sky without worrying about steering.
The jet lifted into the air, and you spent an hour just staring out of the window, admiring your country. It was only when you noticed that Okoye had gotten strangely quiet, that you broke the silence.
“Say it.” you said, getting her to turn to you.
She looked at you in confusion, “ Say what?”
“Ask me the golden question. I know you want to and that’s why you refuse to relax, Okoye. So just ask me this one time.”
She smiled, “How are you feeling?”
“Pretty good. I’m on the best date in the world, with the one woman that I love and she agreed to do this for me so I-”
“-Y/n,” She said, seeing what you were doing, “That is not what I meant.”
You let out an exaggerated sigh, before finally getting serious. “I’m okay, Okoye. I haven’t felt dizzy or anything today. So I’d say that I feel very good.”
She eased up at that, but still there was a trace of tension in her face, and that was not the point of valentines day.
“How are you feeling, darling?”
“I feel good.”
“Don’t lie to me.” you said. flat-toned.
“Okay. Honestly, I feel good about today. And about you. But, I worry that I’m overbearing and that might chase you away.”
“You can’t chase me away. I’m here for the long run.” you reassured her, “But… you are overbearing.”
“I love that you care enough to make sure that I’m okay. But I’m a grown woman, Okoye. I’m done with the lies and I always tell you when I don’t feel well, so there is no need to constantly try to protect me.” you had been getting frustrated with the constant worry that she carried around when you were together. And the worry that doubled when you were apart.
“I’m sorry. I’m going to work on it. I promise I will, sthandwa sam.”
You got up from your seat, and went to sit with her. The chair was not big enough to fit two grown people, so you ended up just sitting on Okoye’s lap, kissing her head and wrapping your arms around her.
“I promise I won’t leave, Okoye. I just want you to trust me when I say that I'm okay.”
You’d grown tremendously over the past months, and your ability to be honest with people had gotten better. You had slowly been telling more people about your fainting spells, being more accepting of your not so new reality. The people around you were always supporting you.
They were there to catch you when you unexpectedly fainted, and the released stress from hiding had reduced the amount of spells you had in general. You no longer had to lie and say that you were okay when you weren’t. And it was all thanks to the woman that held you.
You would never leave her, as long as you heart felt the way that it did.
“I’m not leaving either.” Okoye whispered, before the two of you closed your eyes and fell asleep.
Tumblr media
By the time that you woke up, you were back on ground, and the evening sun had started fading into darkness.
You had one thing left, a nice dinner.
The two of you went home, and freshened up, getting dressed a lot more formally before leaving the house.
You had made reservations at a new restaurant in the city. The place had just opened during the new year, and they had luckily had openings for the night when you called.
You were directed to a table in the corner. A loveseat that you had paid extra for. Scoping the menus and choosing your meals before the server arrived.
“Thank you for today. I really loved being your valentine.” Okoye complimented, and your lips involuntarily spread into a wide smile. One of the many that the day had brought.
“Hi, can I please get the bill?” a voice came.
Your blood ran cold as the voice of your nightmares spoke. Your smile was immediately wiped clean and your body grew rigid. Flashbacks of your ex came rushing back and when you looked to the left and saw her, not in prison, your body instantly grew anxious.
Okoye saw the change as soon as it happened, and when you didn’t reply to her calling you she got worried.
“Y/n, what's wrong?” she took your hand in hers, massaging your palm to calm you down.
“It’s her.” you let out, with no further explanation. Your breathing got shaky and your heart rate increased as you tried to take a breath.
Okoye wanted to ask who you were talking about, but seeing you she knew that there was only one person who could make you that anxious.
She stood up slightly, and saw what you had, recognising her from your descriptions of her. She was tall and muscular but she wasn’t very intimidating. She only looked like a threat to the people that knew what she was capable of.
Okoye’s blood started to boil, seeing the woman smile so happily. She ruined you for so long, and you were only just starting to land on your feet. If it were up to her she would rot in as a prisoner for the rest of her miserable life.
“Okay, let’s go. I can cook dinner.” She said, already getting out of her chair to help you up.
Your body cooperated without your mind's consent, as your mind was in a different world. Okoye politely told the waiters that you were leaving, and helped you take your shoes off to walk easier.
As you walked out into the empty street, the voice came again.
“Y/n. I guess we meet again.”
You turned around to look at her, but Okoye stood firmly in front of you as she took stared daggers at Chedano, who had a proud smile smothered on her face.
“ I see you got protection now. Scared to be alone with your one true love.”
“If I were you, I would tread lightly and think very carefully about the next thing you said.” Okoye said sharply, reaching for her spear as she secured your position behind her. You didn’t move, you body paralysed in place as you looked at the women who used to hurt and torture you.
“You know, we never formally broke up, so whatever this it between you and the General is cheating ,Y/n” she sneered “We wouldn’t want to have to teach you a thing or two about loyalty, would we.”
Okoye unleashed her spear, pointing it at the woman.
“Threaten her one more time and see what happens Chedano. I have no problem taking you back to prison.”
Chedano, backed away at the sight, and her smile faded at the word prison.
Okoye approached her, pointing her spear right at her chest.
“If I ever so much as catch a whiff of you being near her, or communicating with her. Prison will be the least of your worries.” Okoye said, jumping towards her abruptly and grazing her spear only slightly through her arm. Leaving a big gash.
Chedano nodded, running away as blood dripped on the street.
Immediately, Okoye turned to you and was by your side.
“My love…” she said as you broke down in her arms, the tears flushing out.
“I’m sorry. Let’s go home.” she said, lifting you and wrapping your legs around her waist as you cried into her shirt while she walked you to your house.
She kept comforting you as she walked, allowing you to let it out, your fear only increasing as the minutes went by.
By the time you got home, you were in a full blown panic attack, your body in a full panic.
She put you down on your bed, standing in front of you as she comforted you, helping you breathe through it. The night had settled in, and the darkness only brought more fear.
You breathed with Okoye, holding her hands as your heart settled into a slower rhythm.
“I think I'm gonna faint, Okoye.” you said, feeling it coming.
“That’s okay. I’m here, Y/n. I’m he-”
You passed out.
Okoye laid you on the bed, placing you on your side and waiting.
After a gruesome 10 minute wait, you started to open your eyes. You were calmer when you saw Okoye there.
She kissed you head, going to get you water, while you sat up in your bed.
“Thank you.” you said as she handed you the water.
You drank it while focusing on remaining calm, like you had worked on. Okoye stayed with you, getting into bed with you and holding your hand.
“I’m here. I love you."she whispered to you as your eyes slowly started to close. You nodded your head, defeated.
“I love you so much. And you planned the best date I’ve ever had today. We don’t have to talk about what happened now, but I'm here. I will always be here to protect you, my love. You are my entire world, and I’m not going to let anyone hurt you ever again.”
“Thank you.” you whispered again, but a tear rolled down your face. She wiped it away for you.
“I love you. Thank you.” you said, and allowed yourself to hug her.

Author's Note: After a long wait, Part 3 is here. I loved writing this. It was sort of healing. This is of course my contribution to Valentine's Week, but I do think there were a few things that I wanted to say in terms of love.
I want every person reading this to know that it is okay if you didn’t realise that your abuser was abusing you. There is no shame in taking a lot of time to fully recover from it either. Those types of things can take a lot from you. Many of us were never told that abusive behaviours were actually abusive. Being queer, it's even harder to navigate that world because we are so busy fighting the world to prove that we are valid and our love is valid, it leaves us more vulnerable to being unknowingly manipulated and hurt without us realising it.
You deserve the type of love that fights for you, not with you.
Happy Valentine's Week, and I love you. 💙

Her attire stood out from the bleak morning crowd of Upper East SIde; her gait almost announced the Royal blood in her veins, and her company only confirmed the fact that she was someone important: Princess Shuri of Wakanda strolled down the pavement in full style and Okoye in tow, sipping some coffee together.
"Finally, got some Starbucks, eh?" She grinned at her General and confidant.
Okoye shrugged but smiled softly as she answered, "Bast, it might be the only American thing that I like."
Shuri brought her lesbian flag-themed (cherry and tangerine meringue) drink to her lips, scowling as the sun hit her directly in the eyes. "Is this the place 'Kia was talking about?"
"I believe so, Inkosazana..."
They faced the kebab stand beside them, and watched its owner set it up for the day. Nakia was familiar with the landmarks around, and had suggested that they chill in the city for a while as they made plans.
"Sanibonani, babies!"
The person in question had arrived, sashaying down in her bespoke maroon and olive pantsuit. A pair of gold rimmed sunglasses framed her eyes, protecting it from the flashing sunlight.
"Sawubona! Where's my douchehead?" Shuri greeted, referring to T'Challa.
"Oh he's on his way," Nakia replied, proceeding to wave at the vendor cheerfully and socialize with him. They waited for the King and also their delicious-smelling lamb kebab order around a plastic table.
Minutes passed in small talk, and T'Challa ended up arriving only just in time to start eating along with them.
"I was helping this old lady with her car," he explained.
"And it took this much time?" Shuri complained.
The King rolled his eyes. "It was parked a little too far into the side of the road, and it was stuck in the mud. Her arthritic self wasn't the best candidate for the job."
"Pulling a car out would take you, like, five seconds."
"She thanked me for at least five minutes," He replied and turned towards his sister, irritated now. "Also, would you stop making such a fuss about the time?"
"And what if I don't?"
"I will stop bringing you along on any of my trips to nice places." T'Challa retorted, annoyed.
Okoye sighed audibly, knowing that both siblings were aware of how tiring they could be when they bickered. "I say we should discuss what we saw in the city, right now... it's a relatively leisure trip but we have serious work at the back of this."
"You're right," Nakia caught on, helping Okoye dispel the can't-stand-you vibes the siblings had today. "There is still a lot to observe, but we now have an idea of what kind of teams to dispatch to analyze the society. Putting up an outreach center will be of no use if it doesn't cater to the nuanced needs of each unique neighbourhood they're placed in."
Shuri seemed to cut her attitude down for Nakia: "There's a lot that can be improved infrastructurally, but the main problem seems to be the usual one. I did some research beforehand, and there is a clear trend of systemic causes behind the low paying jobs and increasing crime rate. Not any lack of resources."
"I agree," Nakia nodded. "That, along with more engaging and applicable education for the kids in the hood. These schools don't really provide them with everything they need."
Their discussion went on, and T'Challa took notes on a Kimoyo bead disguised as a phone. They came to some conclusions about how the resource planning and channeling should take place, and took them down on an agenda to discuss with the council and the WIOC team.
They got up from their chairs and thanked the vendor, who was now swarmed with more customers than seemed usual, probably because of the accidental sponsoring the expensive looking Wakandans did by eating there.
Speaking of looking expensive, T'Challa noticed that they stood out a little even though they had tried to dress more Western. "We should use something more casual..." He suggested, dipping into an alley and pressing a Kimoyo bead to turn his subtly patterned overcoat and leather shoes into a printed hoodie and sneakers. The others did the same, checking for any surveillance before using their technology to tone their outfit down a little. Only Nakia's pantsuit remained more or less the same, as her experienced ass actually knew what to wear outside.
They split up again, now T'Challa and Okoye going together to navigate some lesser known places.
Nakia accompanied Shuri on their second round of the city, interlocking their arms as they chatted about different things and browsed items in the Black owned stores, keeping some in mind to buy from later. They spent about an hour at a local art exhibition, noting how it helped recognize small scale artists.
When they felt hungry again mid-morning, they stopped by a ice-cream-parlor and ordered a pair of brownie sundaes to cool off with. There were way more people around, now, including a trio of twenty-something-year-olds in identical-looking sweatpants and t-shirts standing just outside the parlor.
**tw colorism, bodyshaming, misogyny**
The War Dog had caught bad vibes from them even as she passed them, but didn't acknowledge them the least. They stayed out of their way only until she first stuck her ornate little spoon (a speciality of the store) into the chocolatey ice cream.
One of the men, a lanky one, sat up in his chair and stared shamelessly at the two women.
"Whew chile, I thought it was the darkness of the void " He sniggered and munched obnoxiously on his half-eaten ice cream cone. "Man why she even dressed up? Is she going out with someone?"
His group guffawed lazily, leering at Nakia.
"Bruv I'm more worried about the other one... how her ankles ain't snapping?"
"No shit, sis ain't got no ass!" The first guy continued, talking loudly to make sure Shuri could hear him. The princess didn't even turn to look, raising a cold eyebrow as she stiffly let the dessert melt in her mouth. Nakia was tired of this already, but prepared to tell them off to protect her friend. However, she turned around and realized that she didn't need to:
A large hand came firmly to rest on the back of the leader's chair; and the mere presence was enough to make him believe that the long fingers were just a second away from reaching his neck and snapping it. The vibranium rings were still on, and though neither asshead knew anything about them, they fell silent as they took in the new arrival.
"Hello there." T'Challa's voice was as smooth as a blade held to one's throat.
"Sup, mister..." The shitface's voice cracked a little.
"Don't you have anything better to do?" He growled, "...like finding your eyebrows?"
They all stared back at him, bug eyed. The ashy fellow truly lacked any definite eyebrows, and seemed shocked at the fact that his natural features were being mocked.
Shuri giggled at her brother roasting the shit out of the incel. Nakia joined in, grinning as her boyfriend turned on the other two.
"And you. I saw you just an hour ago, sucking on the same damn soda can; Bast knows what your teeth look like now." He observed that the other idiot's tongue had immediately darted somewhere inside his mouth where he was definitely missing a tooth.
"Get outta here, N----" The third one said, in a brave and foolish attempt to make T'Challa back off.
He was returned with a glare that seemed to cut through him with no effort.
The King didn't need to speak a word before the first man made a run for it, jumping out of the chair and followed by the others, swiftly following his lead. T'Challa kept his gaze on their backs until they were completely out of sight, before looking back at Shuri and Nakia.
The War Dog smiled at him as she licked some vanilla cream off her spoon, to which her boyfriend slowly came out of his stoic-aggressive state. Shuri waved at him to join them, and he did.
"Ubhuti, I didn't know you could throw shade?" Shuri teased once he sat down on a stool between them.
T'Challa grinned. "I've been throwing shade before you were even born, sister what are you talking about?"
" 'Go find your eyebrows' !" Nakia chuckled, "I was actually gonna use that, by the way"
She watched the smile slide off a little from his face as it took on a serious expression. " They had no right to speak to you two like that, though. "
"I've seen worse." Nakia admitted darkly.
"I haven't." Shuri shrugged, and a little shakily, T'Challa observed. Her voice was concerningly smaller than he was used to.
Both their statements hurt his chest a little; and he took their hands in each of his own.
"The next time anyone says something like that to you, they might have to go find their lower jaw." He whispered, leaning to Shuri, earning a snicker that indicated her good imagination.
"And Nakia," He addressed his girlfriend, not letting go of Shuri's hand, "You don't need brush anything off if it doesn't respect your worth. Like I said, they'll spend days searching for their mandibles."
Nakia's beautiful lips widened in a humored smile, inspiring him to bend forward to plant a kiss on them. She was returning a brownie flavored one when-
"EURGH! Not in front of my salad!"
Shuri ripped her hand unceremoniously from her brother's in faux disgust at the PDA.
T'Challa rolled his eyes to the back of his head. "That is an ice cream, Shuri."
"It's the ice cream version of a salad!"
"Are we really doing this?" He groaned, going back to finish the kiss.
Shuri made it a point to make retching noises as they went on for a few seconds before breaking apart.
"This actually tastes good... can I have some?" He murmured flirtatiously to Nakia, completely ignoring his douchebag of a sister.
"Here take mine, I don't want to eat anymore!" Shuri joked in the background, over reacting. T'Challa pretended to steal it to tease her, but she swiftly moved it out of his reach and began eating it faster under the threat.
Nakia shook her head endearingly at their antics, giggling as she scooped some brownie and ice cream to feed T'Challa with. The King accepted it with a momentary, but pointedly seductive eye contact as he practically sucked the fancy spoon: throwing hints like these weren't uncommon between them.
Having a (now, thankfully and unfortunately) loud and annoying teenage sister around wasn't the best way to get sparks going through dessert metaphors, but it did help keep up the vibe for the rest of the morning until noon, where they met Okoye again at Sylvia's for some good soul food.
-
The General was inevitably livid when she heard what happened to her Princess and her friend.
"Kumkani, you should have cut his tongue off-" She stabbed her barbeque ribs as though they were his.
"It would have been a legal complication, and he had also taken his chance to run. I decided against it." the king explained.
The Princess smirked, "But you looked like you were gonna do it. He low key deserved it, too."
T'Challa shrugged. "Andazi, kungcono ukuba asimfaki ezingqondweni zethu"
"He's not wrong... we have better things to think about." Nakia nodded, digging into her macaroni.
"You can always talk about it if it bothers you, though. Don't hold back." He corrected himself slightly.
Shuri smiled, and looked at Okoye as the General took her hand.
"And if you want him impaled, I have no problem-"
They all laughed, but knew that the Dora wasn't bluffing, since they had enough experience of her dutiful brutality. Shuri felt warm inside for once, feeling the security of her family and friends again. In the recent years of turmoil and instability in her country, it wasn't many nights that she could lie down and sleep without feeling the weight of the country in her gut.
Ironically, in this strange land which she had been (rightfully) warned about before, she found a day and night of peace. Harlem buzzed and stirred constantly around her, as she could see in the bird's eye view from her personal suite that night. T'Challa visited again to check on her before leaving her to the perineal buzzing of her own mind.
No shit! Sis ain't got no ass!
The words echoed again in her mind. But this time what bubbled in her throat was mirth.
"Who, me?" She said to herself, chuckling at the mirror. "Bitches be assless and brainless but come at me, damn!"
Her full length reflection smiled back at her: And she loved herself more than anything at the moment.

🦇Happy Halloween Fellow Heathens!👻
Angry wasn’t the correct word for what Okoye was currently feeling. Something more eloquent and violent like ‘furious’, was much more accurate. She gripped the steering wheel with enough force to make the leather creak as she slowed to turn left into a few rows of warehouses. When Inyanga—one of the intermediate members of her coven—had called to enlighten her about the situation at hand, she was told that the location she was looking for would be the warehouse on the right, closest to the harbour.
Okoye was going to kill the obstinate young witch! And Aneka, Shuri and Riri too! They would all be reprimanded for this based on the inconvenience alone!
Okoye had finally gotten time to herself for the first evening in nearly a month, and in the middle of her freshly drawn bath and soothing candlelight, Inyanga called with an emergency. Okoye had let the calls go through to voicemail the first two times, but a third call meant it was urgent. The recounted tale had her up and out of the water in an instant, hurriedly urging the younger witch to stay put and not call anyone else.
Especially if that ‘someone else’ turned out to be Madame Ramonda.
If the sharp-eyed coven mistress heard anything about what was going on tonight, it would be more than just a few young witches with their asses on the line. As the priestess overseeing their tutelage, Okoye would also be held responsible for any of their mischief.
As her car slowly swung a right and pulled into the fenced-off area around the harbour, her headlights hit the four young witches huddled together near the gate. The light gleamed off the metallic sheen of the various jewellery they wore. It caught the frightened shine of Riri’s eyes when Okoye shifted her car into park. She turned the engine off, and the area was immediately blanketed into darkness. There was no moon in the sky and the streetlights were far and few between. However, Shuri was holding her phone’s flashlight; it cast an eerie silver-blue glow on the limited area it could reach.
Okoye took a deep, slow breath. She was incredibly angry, but she was still a priestess of the Dora Coven. She was here to provide protection and guidance—she needed to stay level-headed. She rose from the driver’s seat with a straight-backed grace and turned her unhappy focus on her charges. All four of them flinched when the door slammed closed behind her. It had shut soundly with an absent wave of her hand.
As her two senior students, the priestess’s eyes honed in on Aneka and Inyanga first. “What have you done?”

➺ For Your Own Good
Paring; dark!soft!Queen Ramonda x Reader
Summary: “When she was told of her husband’s death she was devastated of course, but the first thing on her mind was you. She couldn’t let another person she loved to get killed, not under her watch. She thought the best way to keep you safe was to have you with her at all times, whether you liked it or not.”
Warnings: kidnapping, smut, death (T’Chaka) and fluff.
Word Count: 1.2k
A/n: I hope this is what you wanted!
Tumblr media
You and Ramonda have always been close since you were kids in the river tribe. At some point during the friendship she had fallen in love with you and you did too but the romance was cut short when Ramonda found out she was being married off to the soon–to–be king, T’Chaka. It was a devastating moment for both of you. Before Ramonda left, she promised you she would never stop loving you and that she would always keep an eye on you and gave you one last kiss before boarding the ship. While her marriage with T’Chaka was arranged, she learned to love him but that love would never exceed her love for you.
♤♧♡♢
Years passed and Ramonda always found a way to see you, even if it was from afar. She always had a Dora watching you at all times to make sure you were safe. No one knew about you, only the Dora Ramonda sent knew about you and she made sure they wouldn’t say anything.
When she was told of her husband’s death she was devastated of course, but the first thing on her mind was you. She couldn’t let another person she loved to get killed, not under her watch. She thought the best way to keep you safe was to have you with her at all times, whether you liked it or not.
♤♧♡♢
Ramonda was in the throne room when she summoned the general of the Dora Milaje, Okoye.
“Kumkanikazi, you summoned me?”
“Yes, I need you to retrieve someone and I want you to be discreet.”
“Who am I retrieving?”
“I need you to bring me Y/n. She is in the river tribe. Do whatever you have to do but make sure no one sees you come in with her. When you do bring her here, take her to my private chambers. Do I make myself clear?”
“Yes, yam Kumkanikazi.” Okoye bowed and left the throne room to retrieve you.
♤♧♡♢
You were in your room when you heard a knock at the door. When you opened the door you were greeted by whom you thought was a Dora Milaje.
“Um hi? How can I help you?”
“I’ve come to take you to the palace.”
“Says who?”
“I was given specific instructions to be discreet about this. So, I cannot say.”
“Well then I am not going anywhere,” you said firmly.
“Don’t make this harder than it has to be.”
“Goodbye,” you tried to close the door but Okoye put her spear in between the door and door frame so you couldn’t close it.
“What is your-” before you could finish your sentence you felt her place something on your temple and you blacked out.
♤♧♡♢
When you woke up, you found yourself laying on a giant bed in a very spacious room. You sat up confused about how you got there until all the memories from yesterday started flowing back. You in your room, the knock at the door, the Dora, and then all black. You started to panic but then the door to the room opened to reveal Ramonda.
“Ramonda? What's going on?” you asked in a panicked voice. She came closer and sat on the bed with her arms open for you to come closer. You, still confused, went to her embrace and felt a bit relieved.
“Calm down, ingelosi. I'm here to protect you.”
“Protect me? From who?”
“You know the people who killed T’Chaka?,” you nodded, “They are trying to take you away from me too,” she finished saying. She knew it was wrong to lie to you but she wouldn’t let you leave, she couldn’t. She pulled you impossibly closer to her and kissed your head.
“Who are those bad people?”
“You don’t have to worry about that anymore because you have me,” she pulled away and cupped your face, “and I have you right? You’re mine?” she asked, looking at you in the most loving way possible and you nodded again.
“Use your words, sithandwa.”
“Yes, I am yours,” you said with no hesitation. She smiled and gave you a long and passionate kiss, “All mine,” she mumbled in the kiss. She slowly started to push you to lay down on the bed while she got on top of you, all without stopping the kiss.
“Can I take this off honey?” she asked, referring to the green dress you were wearing. You nodded but she raised her eyebrow and you understood she needed verbal consent.
“Yes,” you said.
She started peeling the dress off of your body, taking her time and putting it aside. She caressed your body with her hands and started kissing each part she could find. She kissed your neck and your chest, before making her way down your body with her tongue. You had your eyes closed, loving every second of it.
When she got to where you needed her the most, she stopped which made you open your eyes. When you made eye contact, she licked a stipe up your pussy which made your release a loud moan. She kept licking your pussy and you threw your head back in pleasure. You felt yourself coming closer to the edge and your breath started to pick up.
“Ramonda- I’m close,” you said in an agitated voice, with your hands gripping the bed sheets.
“Are you going to cum for me, nkosazana?”
“Yes, yes. Please don’t stop.” She kept going and then inserted two fingers thrusting them fast, hitting your g-spot.
“Who do you belong to now, sithandwa? Hm?” you tried to respond but you were caught up in the immense amount of pleasure. When you didn’t respond she slowed down and you whined. She went up your body all the way to your ear.
“Tell me usana or ill stop altogether,” she whispered.
“You! You! I belong to you! Please let me cum, please?”
“Good girl,” she praised and sped up again. She went down again and started to suck on your swollen clit. That got you over the edge. She came up to your ear and whispered sweet nothings while still thrusting her fingers to let you ride your high. You closed your legs around her hand from the overstimulation.
“Is too much-” you whimpered. She pulled her hand away and shushed you with a kiss. You moved closer to her, laying your head on her chest.
“When will I be able to leave, Ramonda?” she tensed at your question.
“You can’t leave, ingelosi. How can I protect you if I don't have you by my side, hm? This is for your own good.”
“But-”
“But nothing. I can't lose you too.” That made you go silent for a second.
“I'm sorry, I shouldn't have asked such a dumb question.” you kissed her neck.
“Shh, it's ok nkosazana. Get some rest, you're probably tired,” she said before kissing your forehead. You nodded and cuddled closer to her, hiding your face in her neck. Soon enough, you felt your eyes get heavy, the warmth of her body lulling you to sleep. She heard your soft snoring and she smiled knowing she finally had you all to herself.

attoye omegaverse | 1/3 | 10.2k words | ao3
“What do you mean he’s not going to provide me with his scent?”
Okoye taps her fingers impatiently against the warden’s desk. With her heat hormones simmering under her skin, her patience for delays has grown thin. Omega and Alpha biology does not care for bureaucracy—it follows the laws of nature, not of man. She needs her husband’s scent immediately, rules be damned! The warden swallows nervously at the bristling ex-Dora Milaje in front of him.
“W’Kabi has rejected your request, Okoye.”
“I’m his Omega!” She snaps, her nerves reaching a boiling point, “He has a duty to me as my Alpha!” She points to her bite mark on her irritated neck scent glands.
All of society knows it is the duty of a mated Alpha to provide for their Omega. Once bitten by an Alpha, Omegas are mated for life—Only their Alphas can soothe their heats with their knot and scent. Unfortunately for Okoye, this means W’Kabi is the only one who can tame the burning biological inferno within her. Yet regardless of crime, exceptions are made for bonded pairs when it comes to justice and punishment. Mates are allowed to tend to each other’s needs when necessary. Emphasis on allowed, not required.
“W’Kabi has rights,” The warden explains as calmly as possible, “We cannot force him to give you his scent.”
Okoye scowls, throwing a foul glare at her bag of scented sheets on the floor. She spent an hour this morning rubbing fabric through her scent glands until her skin became puffy and sore. It was annoying but necessary for the arrangement she had with W’Kabi. She will provide him with her scent to help soothe his ruts and in return, he will provide her with his own scent to help her heats. It is the compromise she has agreed to. No more, no less.
The warden squirms in his chair at Okoye’s dark expression, “I’m sorry, Okoye—”
“Do not say you are sorry!” Okoye snarls, “I am beyond overdue for a heat. Does he not realize he’s killing me?”
Another side effect of mating. While heats become much more manageable, it is only that way because the Omega’s Alpha is the only one who can start their heat. A biological quirk that anthropologists hypothesize was to make sure that mated pairs only procreated when the conditions were optimal for the both of them. That doesn’t stop an Omega’s biology from craving a heat. Like a pressure cooker, the biological imperative to breed will build slowly over time until the Omega is bursting with desire for a pup. At that point, Alphas will instinctually scent their mates and jumpstart their heat, releasing all that pressure. It was just simple biology.
For an Alpha like W’Kabi to refuse to provide for his mate–letting your Omega languish in heat pain out of all things!–it is considered the most shameful behavior for an Alpha.
Going a year without a heat is agony for a mated Omega. It has been fifteen months since Okoye had a proper heat and she was about to lose her mind. The mating mark on her neck burns, constantly itching and aching for her Alpha’s scent.
The only other solutions for mated Omegas without Alphas was to either cut their glands out— a painful, traumatic process— or find another Alpha. But rarely were there any Alphas who were willing to bite down on a living Alpha’s claim. It simply wasn’t done. Not that Okoye was looking for a new Alpha anytime soon.
The warden tugs at his collar, trying his best to be diplomatic, “Okoye, we do allow conjugal visits for mates—”
“No.”
Her Omega bristles. Not at her, but at the warden’s offer. W’Kabi’s not her Alpha—biology be damned. As long as she breathes, she will never submit to W’Kabi ever. Her nails rake into the table.
“Absolutely not. I know what he’s playing at,” Okoye hisses at the warden and grabs him by the collar, “Give him a message for me, you pathetic excuse of an Alpha!” The warden trembles under her fury.
“Tell him he is a fool to think that he can force me to present to him! Tell him to fulfill his duty as my Alpha or—,” Okoye drags the man closer to her face, “I will tear his knot from his cock and feed it to the crocodiles!”

“Your beauty has no rival,” said Attuma while holding Okoye’s gaze.
She became somewhat bashful at his admission as a sweet smile graced her lips.
“The stars in your midnight skies are envious of you,” Attuma continued. “For they can only wish to be half as beautiful as you, and just as bright.”
Okoye said nothing as her eyes softened further at his earnest words.
“You possess me, Okoye. You possess all of my desires. How can I be away from you? My want for you is too great. Do you want me as well?”
Okoye let out a shaky breath and said, “Yes. Yes, Attuma. I want you, too.”

Alt! Attuma x Soft! Okoye HeadCannon:
Attuma's second favorite tattoo would be the bite mark scar, he has on his right hand due to being bitten by a hammerhead.  He loved it to the point he sketched out the outline,  of the jaws of a Hammerhead just to tattoo it around the scars he even covered with a design of shark teeth.
Attuma lifted his arm when he felt Okoye sit beside him before sliding close to his side.  Instantly, he squeezed her lightly while his hand settled by her hip.   Okoye reached for his hand, gently massaging his palm and knuckles while looking at the tv.  Slowly he felt Okoye's fingertips run over his scars, touching each one carefully.
A crescent-shaped bite mark that healed into scars, covered his knuckles on Attuma's right hand.  Each cut held a small tattoo-shaped shark tooth filling in the scars.
"What is this?", Okoye asked gently tapping the scars while Attuma flexed his hand in her grasp.
"A scar that I tattooed over a few years back", he hummed watching Okoye even trace a few.
"From what?"
"Well I got bitten by a shark while out at sea with my cousins", Attuma mused, giving a faint smile even while Okoye gave him a surprised look.
"It wasn't that serious, I promise.  But it was a hammerhead shark that happened to be chasing after a fish that got hooked on one of our fishing lines. I reached to get it out while Namor held it close to the boat, with me not waiting for help I got bitten", He explained, lightly shrugging his shoulders.
Okoye traced the fine dark lines around the tooth markings tattoo, the shape made out to be a hammerhead's jawline.  "You are lucky that it did not damage your hand."
Attuma reached to lightly grasp her chin, gently caressing her jawline while he spoke, "Maybe but it's something I cannot fully describe to see such an animal close and to watch it return back to the depths of the sea".  He leaned close to press a reassuring kiss on her forehead and then her cheek.
"Or you could also be biased about it since you do like sharks, especially hammerheads," Okoye deadpanned. Attuma gave a chuckle, flashing a crooked smile in response.
"If it makes you feel any better Namor was yelling while Namora threw a towel at my head since I refused to wait for her to help.”

Smile At Me For Once - (Attoye)
I finally got the motivation to write Attoye again! I figured I’d do a few warm ups again, by writing out little prompts that have been living rent free in my mind while working on the next chapters of my fics. Enjoy! :)
p.s. this isn’t set in the Sun and the Sky AU. It’s just post-BPWF, after a treaty has been signed.
Tumblr media
Since the treaty was signed between Wakanda and Talokan, little workshops were being held between the two nations to give the people opportunities to learn new skills and build friendships.
Okoye had been very eager to sign up for a few artsy and combat workshops. The midnight angel was hopeful to learn some new ways to kick ass but also embrace this foreign culture. Throughout the entire cultural exchange, she had been very openminded about it all until she had crossed paths with Attuma in a sparring workshop where they played a rougher version of hot potato mixed with floor hockey using a weaker water bomb and wooden spears.
Essentially, you had an unknown number of hits to get the ball in a goal.
If it explodes while you’re maneuvering it around, you’re out until your team scores a goal.
It was a fun game that really boosted everyone’s morale but seeing Attuma and Okoye go against each other while their teammates sat on the bench with bated breaths really got everyone invested.
The man had used every chance he had to be near her, trying his hardest to start a conversation as he maneuvered around her. Through mean mugs and stank eyes, Attuma refused to leave her side. Even causing his team to lose a couple of rounds until she made it clear that she only wished to kick his ass.
Attuma understood that as, ‘I will only respect you if you defeat me or lose to me after giving your all.’
Okoye left the workshop sore, wet, and tattered while Attuma watched her retreat with a bruised grin and blood-filled rebreather.
He had managed to win a few rounds, but he played nastier than she ever wished to discuss or think about after today.
It wasn’t even nasty in a dishonorable cheating manner.
He just played without mercy or restraint or any sense of personal space. This resulted in Okoye having to literally fight for her life or peel him off of her.
There were moments where the wind had been knocked out of her and other moments where Attuma had sent her flipping across the field. He’d always be there to break her falls though, unintentionally groping her during inspections that often ended with gentle touches and the occasional Band-Aid.
Okoye never complained out loud though.
If he wanted to be rough, she could be just as rough.
She had been successful enough to knock him down a few times, but it always left her muscles screaming at how much strength it required to send the blue titan into the muddy earth.
Once she claimed the final victory, earning cheers from her team, Okoye left. She could feel Attuma’s gaze on her back, but she refused to turn around.
She was a wounded cat, desperate to lick her wounds in private.
“Um...Okoye...why did Attuma pin you down like that-”
“-Because he is an idiot.”
“Well, you look like you had fun.” Aneka grinned.
“Do I look like I had fun?” Okoye turned to glare at her friend.
“Well, now you don’t.” She pouted.
“I hope I never have another workshop with that man present.”
“Eh? Why?”
Okoye’s eyes burned into the midnight angel, forcing her to lift her hands in surrender.
“I’ll be quiet.”
“Good.”
Aneka remained quiet as they left the muddy field.
Okoye’s wish of not seeing Attuma had been granted by Bast temporarily.
She’d gone to weaving workshops, cooking workshops, and even carving workshops without seeing Attuma.
It was all going well until she went to the painting workshop that was being led by the king of Talokan.
She should have known Attuma had been praying to Chaac to see her when the sky opened and dropped an ocean’s load of rain.
The downpour was relentless as it soaked her clothes and pebbled her skin, scolding her until she moved faster.
Sandaled feet carried her towards the citadel and down a gilded hallway before she entered the workshop room that was at the beginning of a well-lit corridor.
Rain dripped from her eyelashes as her eyes scanned the room, eager to find a seat without disrupting the class.
Attuma was the only one sitting by himself in the back, while the king paced the front of the room, talking about a painting he had created.
Namor seemed fixated on the painting he had done while he talked, so now was the best time to go.
She gritted her teeth and mouthed a slew of curses as she took off her shoes and tip toed to the empty seat next to the warrior.
Dark brown eyes locked onto her as she quietly pulled out the chair and sat down, successfully making her way in without Namor noticing.
Attuma breathed out a single word.
“In ba’ate’el.” (Warrior.)
But this time, it made her skin feel warm as it fell from his covered lips.
It had somehow gone from something he called her out of respect to perhaps a term of endearment. A nickname between foes to something Okoye refused to acknowledge.
Attuma accepted her glare as a warm welcome before sliding her a few pieces of paper.
“I.” He gently touched his chest. “Write.” He pointed at the papers.
She glanced at the papers apprehensively before taking them when she realized they contained details on the culture behind today’s workshop. Little fun facts and important moments of Talokanil history written neatly in English.
She’d be lying if she said she wasn’t impressed by his act of kindness.
It was clear that whatever his king had written on the board had been duplicated neatly- just for her.
He stared at her, patiently waiting for an ounce of praise.
“Thanks.”
He allowed his lips to curl upward behind his rebreather before he refocused on the speaking king.
Her eyes moved forward too, watching the king pause to put down a piece of paper.
“Alright. Now that we’ve covered the history, let’s jump into today’s craft.” Namor smiled. “Today, you will be working in pairs to create a mural of each other. In Talokan, we keep our culture strong by spilling our history into our art. We tell stories, sing songs, weave tapestries, write music, carve statues, and paint grand murals to record the past. Then, each generation adds to it. This makes our art better and the culture richer.” He lifted up a large painting. “Here is a small example I whipped together for this class. Here we have Chaac leading our priest to the plant that helped our ancestors move to the sea.”
He began to repeat himself, speaking in his mother tongue.
Her ears were able to pick up a handful of words to verify it, but she eventually tuned him out as she took in the large painting.
Namor was talented.
Talented felt like a small word.
An insult almost.
His painting skills were known to be amongst the greatest between both nations, so it made sense that he was leading this workshop. However, seeing his craft in person truly left the group speechless.
The mural was detailed, swirling with various cool tones.
Somber ceruleans, rich viridians, and regal violets.
Sprinkles of sand and clay browns as painted hands reached for a plant that floated down from a watching deity.
Everything was outlined with obsidian and highlighted with white and lighter cool tones.
He pointed at each component of the painting before looking up at everyone. “The story is clear that this is how Talokan came to be.” He put the painting down. “I want you all to work together to make a story about the two of you and paint it. At the end of this workshop, you all will present it to the group.”
He repeated himself once more in Yucatec Mayan before he moved forward to start handing out materials. “If you have any questions for me, please do not hesitate to ask. We have three hours to work on this, so please pour out your creativity and make something beautiful and meaningful with your partner.”
Okoye recoiled at the word ‘partner’ as he began his final translation.
Attuma on the other hand was elated.
His eyes moved to the woman beside him, drinking in her soaked attire.
He was used to seeing her in uniform, but today she was wearing a cropped orange and yellow blouse that tied in the front with a floor length orange and red skirt that moved like lava whenever she walked. She was heavily accessorized with golden bangles, a gold idzila, and a few jade waist beads.
Before he could take in anymore of her beauty, she snapped her red polished fingers in front of his face, sporting a scowl she always wore around him.
He blinked and she sighed before moving forward to place a kimoyo bead in his ear.
The world sounded foreign until she tapped her bracelet and looked up at him curiously.
“Do you understand me?”
He blinked before nodding slowly. “Yes. Can you understand me?”
She nodded. “Yes. Technology.” She offered jokingly before leaning back. “So, we need to tell a story. Let’s make some draft sketches of the mural and then pick the best one.”
“Ok.” He nodded. “Do you want to work separately, or do you want to work together on these drafts?”
“Separately.”
“Ok.”
“Let’s regroup in twenty minutes.” She tapped her kimoyo beads to set a timer.
“Ok.”
He watched her grab a piece of scrap paper and begin to doodle before doing the same.
Every few minutes, he would glance at her, stare at her longingly, get scolded, and refocus on his work.
By the time the twenty minutes was up, he had twenty drafts and she had four.
“I’m surprised you have so many.”
“I’d probably have more if you didn’t yell at me so much.”
“It is difficult to do my task with a creep staring holes into my head.”
“I’m not a creep. I was referencing your features. Your face has to be a part of the mural.”
She gave him a pointed look before she began to lay out her drafts. “Well, let’s see what we’ve got.”
He nodded before laying out his drafts.
He had drawn Okoye twenty times, each one slightly lewder than the first time.
Okoye on the other hand had drawn both of them, taking inspiration from Namor’s style as she drew out different tales from different battles, they’d fought each other in.
There was depth and details and a story.
Everything that was supposed to be there but was missing in Attuma’s work.
He could draw, but nothing he created told a story.
It didn’t capture anything more than the curve of her breasts and ass- amidst the vibrancy of her eyes and fierce scowl she always wore around him.
Very similar to the one she wears now.
“What do you think?” He smiled warmly at her.
“Attuma, you are talented...” She started. “...but you lack the ability to write a story. In fact, you drew me explicitly in every draft.”
“The way I have drawn you is not offensive to my people. Is it offensive to yours?”
“No, but I am more than my tits and ass.”
“Would it look better if I added myself?”
“Why-” She pinched the bridge of her nose to compose herself. “Quality over Quantity. Have you ever heard that phrase before?”
He thought it over. “Not exactly like that...”
“But you understand what I mean, yes?”
“Could you explain?”
“You have nothing more to offer to this idea besides explicit doodles of me. Although the doodles look nice, it’s the same thing... which means you’ve basically given only one idea.” She held up an index finger. “One idea that can’t be used or enjoyed by anyone because there’s no story or lore or creativity behind it.”
“But you are beautiful.”
“Right, but that’s not the theme of this mural. People will get tired of seeing the same thing over and over again. If I showed someone the same doodle twenty times, under the façade that it was something new each time, they’d grow sick of me. Which is why I’m disappointed with your drafts… beyond the obvious explicitness.” She shot him a look as he listened attentively. “We have to be innovative and creative. Just because it has Attuma and Okoye in it, doesn’t mean it’s good. Especially if it’s just the same thing over and over and over again. Whatever we present has to be new and additive to the story we’re trying to tell and something we’re proud of. We have to present this at the end, you know. It should be something of good quality. Something I would want to hang up in my living room and read books under.”
“Then let’s look at your ideas.” He tilted his head. “Maybe I can help draw one of those in a rough draft before we work on the mural.” He offered a small smile. “Whatever we make, I want it to make you happy.”
Okoye nodded as she looked away shyly. “Ok.”
Her four drafts were amazing, each blending the cultures of Wakanda and Talokan to create an ornate mural.
The first one centered around Bast and Chaac blessing her and Attuma in combat as they fought on a bridge.
The second portrayed a midnight angel descending on a warrior adorned with the head of a hammerhead shark, pointing her spear with a vow of sending him off to his ancestors.
The third centered around her kicking Attuma off the sea leopard and into the sea.
The fourth centered around Attuma pointing down at Okoye while she stood underneath an aircraft, holding a child close.
She spent a few minutes explaining each doodle before waiting for Attuma to pick one to work on.
He stared at each doodle with great focus before picking up the third one. “This one.”
She looked at it. “Why?”
“In that moment, we truly became equals.”
“You looked down on me before I kicked you off that ship?”
“No, but the fire in your eyes burned the brightest that day.” He smiled fondly at the doodle. “It makes me wish we had never been enemies.” His smile dropped. “Perhaps you wouldn’t glare at me as much.”
Okoye stared at him as they sat in silence for a minute or two.
“I glare at everyone.” She huffed under her breath, ignoring how his eyes brightened as she looked away.
“I will keep that in mind and not be offended by your angry gaze.”
“Yeah.” She dismissed him, suddenly feeling uncomfortable by her attempt at comforting him. “How long do you need to add your own style to it?”
“Twenty minutes.”
“Ok.” She set another timer. “I’ll start making paint swatches, so we know what colors we want to use.”
“Ok.”
The pair worked quietly on their parts of the project before regrouping when the timer went off.
Okoye looked the doodle over, while Attuma waited patiently for her feedback.
“This looks good to me.” She looked over the patterns he included to add more dimension to the mural. He even cleaned up the design of her characters, being mindful to not erase the notes of her culture she had woven throughout the design.
There were a few creative differences incorporated, but it was definitely something she wouldn’t mind hanging on her living room wall if everything turned out great in the end.
“Can we start working on the sheet of canvas now?”
“I think so.” Okoye nodded. “You can draw the outline and then I’ll paint it.”
“Do a rough draft of what colors you want to use on the draft I just finished while I work.” He glanced up at her. “I don’t want to be in your way when you’re painting.”
“Ok.”
Attuma took a deep breath as he lifted the roll of canvas and rolled it out on the floor. Azure fingers began to spread out the dense material before he grabbed a piece of charcoal and got to work.
Nimble fingers skillfully mixed different colors of paint on a palette before pressing themselves into the wet paint.
She stamped her finger into the areas to denote where each color would go, occasionally going over colors with something different when it didn’t look how she wanted.
Once she was satisfied with her work, Okoye dried her fingers off on a rag and turned back to face Attuma with curious eyes.
At some point while she was working, he had pulled his hair up into a messy bun, failing to catch every single fly away.
His brows were furrowed in concentration while his hands moved with precision and accuracy across the canvas.
Upon closer inspection, it dawned on her that Attuma wasn’t dressed in his usual uniform.
He had on a long jade skirt that complimented his many piercings and a thick band of cream cloth that wrapped around his waist twice before trailing a line diagonally up and over his shoulder.
He didn’t even have his headdress on.
He instead wore a viridian and a cream feather tucked behind his ear with a few shark teeth charms attached to the handful of braids that had been neatly done throughout his hair.
At a quick glance, he looked like a sculpture of a deity who was heavily invested in something.
He was some sort of sea god or water god.
Enchanting her like a siren, luring a pirate out to his demise.
His gaze lifted to meet hers for a moment before he lifted his brow in curiosity.
“Is something wrong?”
“No.”
“You’re staring.”
“I just wanted to make sure I mixed the right shade of blue for your skin.”
“You can do swatches of paint on my back to test it out if you want.”
“No need.” She turned around, flustered, and ashamed that she had been caught.
Attuma chuckled softly as he refocused on his work.
Once he was done, he got up and leaned over her, forcing her to meet his gaze.
“It’s your turn, warrior.”
“Okoye.”
“Hm?”
“My name is Okoye.”
“My apologies. It is your turn, Okoye.”
She offered a small nod before getting up and retreating to the floor.
“Is this okay?” She held up her rough draft.
“It’s perfect.”
“Ok.”
Attuma sat at the table and watched her begin to paint, being extra careful to be neat with each stroke.
Time moved slowly as Okoye worked.
He watched her every move quietly, being mindful not to gawk or make her uncomfortable.
If he was a water god, then she was a goddess of fire.
Beautiful opposites that could destroy one another if not careful but be steamy if allowed to mix.
Okoye could feel him staring but decided not to acknowledge it.
Once she was done painting, Attuma sat back down to finish outlining and highlighting the mural before they signed the bottom right corner.
The pair stepped back to admire their work, covered in smudges of charcoal and a few flecks of paint.
“We’re done.” Okoye breathed out.
“Mhm.”
“We did it.”
“We did.”
“Alright.” Namor spoke up. “While some of you add the finishing touches to your mural, let’s start presenting so that we can clean up and go.” His eyes scanned the room. “Do I have any volunteers?”
Okoye kept her hand down, but Attuma raised his hand.
Her eyes burned into the warrior as Namor grinned.
“Great! Attuma and Okoye will be our first presenters.” He waved them forward. “Come to the front and discuss the lore of your mural.”
Okoye sighed as she helped Attuma lift their mural and carry it to the front of the room.
Gasps filled the air as everyone took in the painting.
The painting was mostly various hues of blue, teal, and gold.
An unmasked midnight angel, striking Attuma into the waves with fire in her eyes.
Instead of painting a ship or an actual sea leopard, a large black panther was painted fighting with a feathered sea serpent in the sea.
The people of Wakanda were denoted by small purple panther cubs clinging to the panther’s back and the people of Talokan were denoted by small jade serpents trying to move up K’uk’ulkan’s back.
Attuma explained it all in Yucatec Mayan first before Okoye spoke in Xhosa.
He removed the kimoyo bead in his ear to relish in the sound of her explaining things in her own mother tongue.
It was beautiful.
She was beautiful.
Her lips stopped moving as her dark brown eyes moved to meet his.
She looked him over as the sound of clapping and soft cheers filled the air.
It all became background noise the moment she smiled at Attuma.
His skin purpled as she parted her lips to say, “Dios bo’otik.” (Thank you.)
“In k’áatech.” (I love you.) He breathed out.
“Huh?”
“Mixba’al.” (You’re welcome.) He spoke up as his blush deepened.
“Ah.” Okoye laughed softly as she looked away.
“That was a brilliant presentation you two! Thank you for volunteering to share first.” Namor beamed at them.
“Thank Attuma.” She jutted a thumb at the General before taking the mural from him. “I just wanted some art for my home.”
Attuma watched her quietly, drinking in all the joy that crossed her face before looking at his king with wide eyes when he snapped his fingers.
He arched a brow before realizing he was gawking at Okoye again.
Namor only shook his head as Attuma retreated and chuckled. “Alright, who’s next?”
The End
