As she questions her sexual orientation, Rachel must decide between her stable relationship with Heck, and her exhilarating new romance with Luce.

Writer: Ol Parker
Runtime: 94 Minutes
Genre: Comedy
What's it about?: Rachel is getting married and the florist, Luce, is there (is it typical for the florist to stick around during the ceremony?). They lock eyes, hit it off, but there's a husband and the overall constraints of a heterosexual society in the way...for now.
Did you think it was any good?: Meh. This is a capital R Rom-com. It's light, it's fluffy, fantasy where one's love life is all that matters and the bills pay themselves. You do not have to think too hard about it. For what it is, it's fine. There's a lot of the typical tropes that happen with "closeted woman meets gay woman" romance movies, it's got all the parts of a straight rom-com from the 00's...it doesn't feel like much of an artistic statement but rather a product. Lesbian rom-com loaf, cut yourself a slice. All the parts, from the writing to the acting to the cinematography, are generally consumable with the sour parts being a few jokes that didn't age too well. This is a movie alright, no mistaking it for anything else. If you want to spend 90 minutes watching two English women falling in love in the most saccharine, predictable way and a husband trying to figure out why his wife doesn't want to sleep with him instead of just talking to her, then this is the movie for you. Apparently Giles from Buffy is in it if that matters to you.
From Shakespeare in Love director John Madden and with a bursting prestige-y ensemble, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is one we have been saving. Led by Dames Judi Dench and Maggie Smith, who both had other films in the race in this season, the film follows several seniors who seek fulfillment and romance in India, including Tom Wilkenson as a man seeking reconciliation with a former gay lover. With Dev Patel as a young hotelier, the film was a global box office success that showed up throughout the precursor season, but Oscar did not come calling.
This episode, we take a look at the 2012′s wide-spread acting races, with all previous winners in Supporting Actor and Jennifer Lawrence winning Best Actress. We also talk about Smith’s two Oscar wins, Dench’s near nomination this year for Skyfall, and the Ol Parker franchise ethos.
Topics also include our winner predictions for this year, “The Quartet,” and Dev Patel going from twink to hunk.

What does he have in his dressing room?
Most unconventional thing in your dressing room?
JACKMAN This is easy for me and I keep it there because it makes me laugh. On opening night, I walked in and Ryan Reynolds had two massive portraits of himself [laughs] — on my makeup mirror was Gene Kelly’s famous kick with Ryan’s face superimposed on top of it and “Good luck with your little show.” I didn’t stop laughing for about a minute, and then I turned around to go to my bathroom, and there was another one of him, literally framed.

Ticket to Paradise has a very brief shot showing a distant thunderstorm with some dim lightning in the cloud. A dance sequence with loud music has some very mild patterned lights.
A few scenes take place near clifftops. Two scenes use some mild shaking of the camera, including one involving a lot of drinking.
Flashing Lights: 1/10. Motion Sickness: 2/10.
TRIGGER WARNING: After drinking, and with obvious warning, a character rushes out of the scene, presumably to vomit, which we never see or hear.

Film after film: Ticket to Paradise (dir. Ol Parker, 2022)
There's an interesting disjunction between my enthusiasm for rom-com trailers and my total lack of interest in actually watching the films. Everything is absolutely predictable about this film: from the story, to the acting, to the infuriatingly mundane score. Roberts and Clooney, who share likeable chemistry, play a divorced couple who first hate and then are back to loving each other. There's an impending nuptial ceremony of their daughter (Dever). There's also a friend (Lourd) and a boyfriend (Bouttier). No one's bad, no one's particularly good, everything about it is mediocre.
If the new movie Ticket to Paradise seems like it was tailor-made to the talents of George Clooney and Julia Roberts, well, it was. When director Ol Parker was working on the screenplay, he told us, he literally designed the lead characters with the two actors in mind ... and, fortunately, was able to land them for the film.
Ticket to Paradise opens in theaters on October 21.
