Can I share something a bit non-art related and more about what I’ve been doing while not at my computer? I got into raising chickens this year, and I’m gearing up for a breeding program in the spring for my English type orpingtons. I hatched all of my current birds from eggs and it’s been amazing watching their development. I would love to find more chicken people out there. I love my tiny dinosaurs so much.

Apollo, my smooth collie show dog, has been such a good poultry shepherd.

Artemis Fowl Winged AU:

For obvious reasons, the Fowls are Corvidae- intelligence, curiosity, strong family bonds… and a proclivity for extreme mischief.

Artemis Fowl II- Western Jackdaw:

An underappreciated little corvid with glossy black feathers and bright blue eyes, perfect for Artemis! I've already mentioned corvid intelligence, but let me note in particular they are incredible problem solvers... and sometimes a little silly.

Artemis Fowl I (Fowl Senior)- Common Raven:

Clever? Check! Iconic? Check! Believed to be unfortunate to come across? Unfortunately, check! And finally, appropriately scruffy? Check!

Angeline Fowl- Barn Owl:

Well, some member of the family deserved to be an owl, and Barn Owls have the perfect mix of elegance, beauty and intellect to suit Angeline- they’re also quite cute, and can be very silly (spoken from experience!)

Myles and Beckett Fowl- Stellars’ Jay and Blue Jay:

Look at these birds and tell me it’s not the twins. Jays are known for mischief-making, extreme intellect (despite often being underestimated) and colorful, loud personalities- perfect for them!

Domovoi Butler- Golden Eagle:

A classic! While I was originally thinking ‘owl’, eagles have a certain reputation of nobility and power- they’ve also historically been used in falconry. They are fierce, protective, and incredibly strong birds.

Juliet Butler- Black and Chestnut Eagle:

While I was this close to going with a Crested Caracara or some form of kite, Juliet deserves ‘eagle’ status alongside her brother. Further research led me to various ‘hawk-eagles’, smaller than their more famous cousins and built just a little bit different- this bird is colorful and quick and still quite powerful. Though, in all truth, I imagine Juliet would dye her feathers green no matter what wings she’d have.

Holly Short- Common Kestrel:

A small bird for a small fairy! While a kestrel is one of the smallest raptors, they are nonetheless incredibly fierce and capable of some pretty fancy flying, including the unique ability to ‘hover’ in midair!

Mulch- Burrowing Owl

I don’t think I really have to explain myself here, lol.

(now… onto the villains! Be warned for some blood ahead!)

Opal Koboi- Little Brown Bat

Now, I know what you’re thinking. “Why not a vampire bat? She’s a villain!” And A. It feels too easy, and B. Vampire bats are highly social (which, granted, most bats are), and more importantly, known to take care of older or sick members of their swarm! That is too compassionate for Opal. So instead, I chose something known for being small, fairly ‘cute’, and, most importantly-

Absolutely full of rage.

Jon Spiro- Peregrine Falcon

A cosmopolitan bird, the peregrine falcon is a bird perfectly at home in the big city-in fact, peregrine falcons have been observed to fly faster and hunt more successfully when among the skyscrapered skyline! Primarily preying on other birds, the peregrine falcon is a serious threat, even if it's not particularly big or strong, and its urban lifestyle makes it well-suited to one Jon Spiro.

Britva- Giant Petrel

A relatively underrated villain in the series, but in my opinion the most grounded in reality and particularly intimidating. Given the Bay of Kola is his territory, a seabird felt appropriate, and these birds are big, bad, and brutal. A true scourge on other creatures, that's for sure.

Damon Kronski- Blood Pheasant

Finally, some Galliforme representation! These birds are relatively uncommon in the world of public knowledge, but very flashy- just look at it! The males are brightly-colored, but sharply-spurred, and can be quite fierce when disturbed.

Teddy Bleedham-Drye- Cape Vulture

I don't really think I need to elaborate here, lol.

#chicken #my chickens #margot the hen #this is a bantam cubalaya from cackle hatchery (i know💔💔💔) and her most glaring flaw is how high she holds her tail #it should be held slightly below the horizontal and this is. clearly too high #its also too short but it was longer when she was younger. i dont know if the tail shortening is a trait of large fowl cubalayas or if this #is from being crossed with other games? since this is apparently a trait of (at least some) old english bantams? #anyway. shes a stunning chicken even though she doesnt come close to her breed's standard #another fun fact shes um. named after the margot from nbc hannibal. for no reason i just had the name on my mind and felt like it fit her

I really like how long tail Aseels look and Old English Game bantams. Both breeds can make great pets.

Shamo and Malay are also very beautiful and elegant. I have some local friends who have started to raise Malay and they are just awesome to see but definitely not for beginners.

Me @ the local exotic bird fair: I'm way too white for this -- oh *gasp* ITS A CHICKEN *immediately bypasses the emus and parrots to see the modern game bantams and old english games in the back*

#my bird talk #its one of those things were you look around and go well someone is the odd one out #it was me #I'm very obviously white super white and woman-presenting #in a large exhibit hall of hispanic and se asian men #it didn't particularly bother me - I mean I lived in Korea for 3 years but I found it funny #the funniest part to me is the chicken sellers were also white women 😂 and they were the only white vendors other than the supply table #white women and hispanic men - biggest fans of chickens unite #I've actually purchased birds from the mom in the mom-daughter duo before #I desperately wanted those chickens tho #and the old english games in the table next to them #2 of my 3 fave chicken breeds the 3rd being sebrights #sadly I purchased 2 diamond doves and that's it #I wanted new colors/blood on the doves and 1-2 button quail roosters #but I was too slow on the button quails and someone else got them while I was buying a dove #next year after I build a bigger aviary and sell most of my canaries I'll try some finches #the new owners of the bird show must be allowing poultry/gamebirds now #b/c there were 2 chicken booths and coturnix and bobwhites and pheasants and mandarin ducks #usually the only birds like that you'd see would maybe be a pair of fancy pigeons or some ringneck doves #the only thing I don't like about that is chickens and ducks carry a lot of yucky things #like theses birds all looked very well taken care of b/c they were clearly showbirds #but I don't know how much vetting they do of the vendors and all it takes is one sick bird
