rambling through pinterest as one does and i've run into a cache of books/booklets scanned into archive.org (blessed site) one in particular caught my eye:
Tumblr media
i have a fondness for rural school ephemera so i peeked into it and it was published in 1916 in North Dakota. My grandparents hadn't married yet but my grandmother helped to keep a school near Steele around that time, so my ears were perked. It's full of things like cream of wheat with dates and fried mush and lovely tidbits about how to arrange a school and a tiny kitchen and this interesting bit of home economics that resembles another bit of farm wife knowledge I found in a book about running a family farm from the same era- and it has to do with the day to day caloric needs of folks
Tumblr media
and i think about the strictures of modern diets and sigh
