15 questions
(or the time I almost pasted a comment intended for Hunting, @roseforthethorns + Only_1_Truth's recent spicy 🌶🌶🌶 JB/Q/AT werewolf au instead of the questions to answer 👀😂)
Ty @bishybarnaby + @macontheweb for asking me to play! 💜
1. Are you named after anyone? Kind of. My mama's best friend's name was Laurie + she like the sound of it so she came up w/something similar. (Grateful my dad ix-nayed the Two Grandmother's Name idea because Patience Josephine is a l o t for one small human to shoulder.)
2. When was the last time you cried? Two nights ago during a rewatch of Madam Secretary s05 e16 The New Normal about climate change-related migrations. Before that got weepy while listening to a friend explain the complicated surgery + recovery protocol she's navigating.
3. Do you have kids? Yep, two 24 y.o. born 5 minutes apart. Very different in almost every way, currently living in two different states. Each are DeLiGhTfuL humans which makes being family a lot of fun. ~ Interestingly, this almost wasn't my story. I'm deeply grateful neither of my parents pushed marriage or kids onto my ideas for the future. I grew up knowing neither choice is for everyone, nor an indicator of a rich, full life, and well into my twenties I was utterly convinced neither were for me. ~ As life unfolded I did a shit-ton of therapy, decided to stick around this place + then later on met my person. We're well-matched in many great ways, so when things shifted inside both of us, our two came into the world. We intentionally raised + launched them aligned with our quirky values + interests which turned out to be a trickier design challenge than I anticipated. Worthy though! But, ummm, I'm STILL kinda tired, so if you choose to do the kid thing, please get more sleep than I did while you do it. Your future self will be grateful. Plus if you have ovaries, menopause is a w a y easier journey if you've been getting enough sleep beforehand. #adrenal fatigue is real
4. Do you use sarcasm? Occasionally I hint at it, but no. It makes me emotionally + physically squirm.
5. What is the first thing you notice about people? Hmmmm, intuitively I pick up how emotionally safe they are, both within themselves + how they're likely to interact with others. Next I notice what draws their eyes. Then I get curious about what they choose to wear + why. Sometimes it's the exact opposite sequence.
6. What is your eye color? Green
7. Scary movies or happy endings? Ha! Happy endings!!! CanNOT watch anything remotely scary.
8. Any special talents? After years + years of wondering WTAF, I realised I'm the human equivalent of a portable sanctuary. Not always (that would be aNnOyiNg for all involved!), but often there's something about how I listen + interact w/people that makes them feel safe enough to share something about themselves, an insight, or chitchat about A Real Thing. It happens literally a n y w h e r e. Yesterday it was w/a guy in the grocery store check out line.
9. Where were you born? Within a mile of a small beach in a formerly sleepy southern Californian town, USA; moved to the PNW when I was 12. West coast gal all the way.
10. What are your hobbies? Chopping vegetables while listening to old school jazz, reading, dinking around in the garden, going for walks to look at other people's gardens, evolving as a human being, making Mr FSC laugh so his eyes crinkle. Vague itch to pick up some sort of fabric art activities in 2023.
11. Do you have any pets? After the heart-break of nursing first one + then a second older man cat to the other side (see below), I've become an avid backyard bird watcher. This includes staring out the window at LoTs of little brown birds + talking to the neighbourhood crows.
12. What sports do you play/have you played? All my life I've been physically active, almost always outside the bounds of defined sports. In high school I swam + played on the badminton team and both were a total gas, but that was because we were a team of weirdos doing something fun together. Swimming, bike riding, hiking, sailing, skiing, dancing, walking - all of it - is for the joy of feeling my body in motion. I am so f*%ing grateful to my parents for leading by example in this way which, thankfully, I seem to have passed onto both of our kids.
13. How tall are you? 5′6" / 167 cm
14. Favorite subject in school? All of them. Seriously. I loved learning about the natural world which opened up into all.of.the.sciences. Loved learning mathematics even when it was moderately hard; stopped when it got really hard. Adored reading + writing, and then writing about what I read. Liked art + cooking + sewing (which was still taught at the time). Took Spanish + then went to Latin America to speak it. Enjoyed learning how to speak persuasively, up in front of other people. Reading this over I started laughing because it makes sense of my Uni experience! Spent a few years on a journey through most of these topics before I narrowed it down to History of Science. Which still covers almost all of them PLUS included the study of people + institutions! Grad school was focused on leadership development + how to navigate organisational change, which meant picking up organisational psychology to add into the mix.
15. Dream job? Having had s e v e r a l already + being in the 3rd act of life w/the need to make a bit more money, this is a f a s c i n a t i n g, topical + tender question. I've loved what I've done: waited tables; collaboratively created a customer service + accounting dept within a successful dot com start up within a major retailer; lay minister with teens in a queer positive church; parent; organisational change consultant. B u T, I've also experienced mental + physical exhaustion 3x. The last episode has been particularly challenging to recover from, so the question at hand is how to be moderate. I hear it's possible + have seen others achieve this goal. Recently started back up w/therapy to figure why it's been challenging for me thus far. Dream of dreams? Consultant designing + facilitating important conversations w/in organisations navigating changes in leadership styles between The Old Way + what's evolving. I'm pretty skilled at inter-generational dynamics which is a deal these days. Goal is to get paid handsomely enough for doing it part time. Stretch goal? Flesh out some scribbled notes pinned on the bulletin board >> write a couple of small square books about organisational change + Generation Flux + sTuFf.
Who else wants to play? If you're interested, @fuzzballsheltiepants, @pomponiaia, @christinefromsherwood, @anyawen, @merceyca, @leahlisabeth, @youreyestheyglow. I'm guessing any one of you will do this in 50% fewer words. 😉 Carrying forward bishy's caveat: this one is long and also personal, so feel free to nope out if you'd rather not!
Here are sweet Oscar + Mr Bingley, may they continue to rest in peace while nourishing the garden.

Misc thoughts on House now that I've finished season 1
I think I figured out why I was never as into Bentleytruck Clusterfuck as the louder part of early 2010s Tumblr was and that's because the funky gangly British actor exported to America that I was obsessed with first was Hugh Laurie
If you've known me long enough through my various personal lore dumps then you'll know growing up I was one of those gals with huge crushes on older male authority figures and massive daddy issues. This show was like water in a desert to me. I am almost embarrassed at my own behavior towards this show (almost) but have since grown. I am also a nonbinary transmasc dude now. This does not remove the old man issues but progress is still progress
A great deal of stuff has NOT aged well since 2004, and that includes so much of literally everything House says and does.* I find the best way to watch this show is to properly frame it mentally and shake your head disapprovingly.
Watching Gregory House in each episode is like watching a train crash in slow motion. Fascinating. Enthralling. Can't look away. Only difference is there's also guaranteed a fuckable old man or two in there for the viewing experience.**
Gregory House is so fucking pathetic. I love him. I hate him. He's so. So. You get me, right? Yeah. I wanna place him in a box with some sticks and moss.
I never would've thought that my quarter life crisis would involve House becoming one of my many blorbos*** but here we are
It's genuinely wild how many of these episodes I remember and how certain parts of it have been fresh in my mind since I first viewed them. Like damn if nobody thought I was autistic they're extra wrong now
Sometimes, you don't choose the gangly British guy that you obsess over. Sometimes they are government assigned.****
*= and also like. Three Specific Episodes in season one off the top of my head. Guess which ones but know one of them is the one with the chubby girl patient like HOLY SHIT
**= unlike actual train crashes which do not guarantee fuckable old man sightings
***= he may be blorbo from my shows but he is not and will never be a babygirl. Not to me. Hell, even Wilson, the closest to being a babygirl isn't one.*****
****= reply to this post with your government assigned funky gangly British actor for funsies
*****= alright fine Wilson can be a babygirl but I'm not gonna look up any hilson fics until I'm done with this series that finished a decade ago. Because Spoilers. I do have some Ao3 tabs ready for that day though

Day 39- Film: Has Anybody Seen My Gal?
Release date: June 25th, 1952.
Studio: Universal
Genre: Comedy
Director: Douglas Sirk
Producer: Ted Richmond
Actors: Piper Laurie, Rock Hudson, Charles Coburn, Gigi Perreau, Lynn Bari
Plot Summary: In 1920’s New York, a hypochondriac millionaire thinks he is about to die with no heirs. Remembering the lovely woman from his youth who refused his proposal, he becomes convinced she is what spurred him on to financial riches. What if he left his fortune to her family? He locates her descendants and decides to check them out incognito, hoping to discover that he can trust them with the money.
My Rating (out of five stars): **½
I’ll admit I was disappointed with this movie. It looked kind of cute and colorful and fun. Well, it was colorful. It was also a bit overly cute and a bit under the bar of fun.
The Good:
The color was gorgeous Technicolor in all its glory.
Rock Hudson. He was really charming and charismatic, and his acting wasn’t stiff at all. I can see why he was just on the edge of becoming a huge star.
The little daughter Roberta, played by Gigi Perreau. She was so natural for a child actor, I even paused the movie to look her up. By the end of the movie, however, her character was pretty grating.
Another James Dean blink-and-you'll-miss-it cameo! He played a guy at the soda fountain asking for a ridiculously complicated drink. He had literally one line. But this is the third time of the project so far he’s had that.
The cuteness of the time period, the clothing, etc. Part of it was good fun, but...
The Bad:
The way the film was trying so hard to be overly nostalgic, constantly hitting us over the head with the fact that it was the 1920s. Remember prohibition? Scoff-laws? Speakeasies? Old time soda shops? Cloche hats? The Charleston? They even showed you how to do it, in case you forgot. Can you believe steak was 35 cents a pound? And eggs were 33 cents? If you compare it to Singin’ in the Rain, which also took place in the 1920s, you can really see the difference. Singin’ definitely had reminders of the time period, but the plot always took precedence. It never stood still for nostalgia p*rn.
The way the plot went off the rails for the last hour. Forty-minutes in, daughter Millie gets engaged to Hudson, and the family anonymously receives the fortune. And there’s almost an hour left! Everything kind of fell apart from there. The plot just wasn’t structured well at all.
I didn’t really like Charles Coburn’s millionaire character. I can’t put my finger on exactly why, but I was really sick of him by the end of the movie.
The other characters were not really fleshed out enough for me to feel really invested in them. Piper Laurie was given top billing as Millie, but I couldn’t really tell you anything about her except that fact that she was of marrying age.
I hated the mom character. She was part of why everything suddenly went off the rails. Her personality after she acquired the wealth changed so fast it was totally unrealistic. The family mongrel? Get rid of him! We need French Poodles now! Sell the family business! We can't be working plebs anymore! Etc.
The ending. It was also not very satisfying, not very realistic, and it left some significant strings flapping around. (Like flappers? Sorry, couldn’t resist a really bad groaner.)

CONNECTION IDEAS ♡
Tumblr media
SPECIFIC CONNECTION IDEAS
Party Jumpers: Boring parties are never fun, and Tori found her twin flame of hating boring events in this person. They were at the same social gathering / event and, snagging a bottle of something on the way out, decided to find their own fun instead. Ever since whenever they need an escape or a fun night, they know exactly who to call (no not ghostbusters). ( Taken by Aiden )
It was fun when we were young and now we're older: These two were a thing when they were growing up, maybe things broke off amicably and they stayed friends, or maybe things became toxic. These two could've even fallen back into old habits, risking the possibility of old feelings resurfacing, or maybe there isn't anything there anymore to rekindle.
I hate you, I love you, I miss you, bish f*ck you: They can't remember the reason why they hate each other. Why they're the first to toss a quip or a smart remark at the other is beyond them, and it confuses them even more as to why they somehow end up in each other's bed despite their apparent 'hate'.
Doing 60 in a 40: Every car gal needs other car friends, whether they be in her age bracket or older Tori doesn’t care. She just loves her ‘73 Bronco and would love other vintage car friends that also fix up cars, or even like to go to car shows together.
I’m a bish, I’m a boss: Owning Main Street Records after her Aunt decided to retire 6 years ago has been something Tori has absolutely loved doing. Whether these muses worked at the shop before Vitoria took over, or after is up in the air, but one can be sure she’s the boss that’ll order in pizza on late nights of stocking product. And bring in coffee for everyone on odd mornings when she herself needs a boost.
*Mulaney VC* That’s my wife!: These two have been best friends for awhile, and closeness has never been an issue with them. In fact Tori isn’t sure at times what she’d do without the buffer of this person in her life. They’d do anything for each other, the term ‘help hide a body’ would easily fit with them. (Taken by Phoebe )
I call Loba or Ballistic okay?: Nerd are friends are always needed, whether that’s for video games, D&D, movie / tv marathons or nerding out over whatever just came out. Vitoria absolutely needs all the friends to nerd out with in her life, so please give them to her. ( Taken by Amar )
Friends to lovers, 20k words, pining…: Tori would do anything for her friends and family, that much is clear. But this person, somehow, brings out the best in her ever since they met. The connection is there, and feelings are either developing or have already developed for them. Cue the pining, cue the unexplainable jealousy, cue the fluff because their closeness is still ever prominent. Six out of Five stars.
GENERAL CONNECTIONS
Exes
Close Friends
Fwbs (1/?: Laurie)
Pseudo-siblings
Cousins
Future Romances (honestly i’m big on chemistry, so i’m moreso down for us screaming at each other that we see our muses headed this way than anything!!)
Neighbors
People she met whilst on her travels
Customers at the Record Shop
Childhood friends
Everything!! Hmu for plots ♡

"Being Mary Tyler Moore:" Documentary Screens at SXSW 2023
Tumblr media
Director James Adolphus, who helmed the documentary “Being Mary Tyler Moore,” was asked about his exposure to Mary Tyler Moore before he undertook to make this extraordinarily intimate 2- hour film about her life. He admitted that he had never watched any of her shows, that she was more of a figure that his mother knew about. (“I knew her from the lyric in the Weezer song.”) He then said, “It’s odd to make a film about someone you don’t know and to fall in love with someone after the fact. She felt like my cousin, my sister. She had to fight back against the patriarchy.” The documentary is an attempt to reconcile the insecure woman who looked so proud and regal with the real woman who was not that way at all. It was an attempt to show the real person beneath the veneer. With the help of many clips from “The Dick Van Dyke Show” and “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and various interviews, it more than succeeds. One week after the 18-year-old MTM graduated from high school, she got a job portraying Happy Hotpoint in television ads. The problem was that the young Mary had married Richard Meeker in 1954, at age eighteen. She soon turned up pregnant, giving birth to her only child, Richard, and losing the Happy Hotpoint job in the process. Later in the film, we learn that Moore’s own mother would give birth to a daughter, Elizabeth, at age 40, only a few months after Richard’s birth, giving Mary a younger sister, as well as a brother, John, who was 7 years younger. There were references to Mary’s mother’s alcoholism, but they were married for more than 50 years. Her mother eventually sobered up and even took on the duties of caring for the two youngsters, Elizabeth and Richard, who were so close in age. Mary’s marriage to Meeker did not last; she would marry again, in 1962, barely a month out of her first marriage, to Grant Tinker, to whom she would remain married for 18 years. Her career, in 1959, included a stint as Sexy Sam, the faceless voice on “Richard Diamond, Private Investigator.” When she asked for a raise from her $85 per episode salary, she was fired. Enter Carl Reiner, a comic mentor who envisioned her as the character Laurie Petrie, the wife in a 1960 pilot dubbed “Head of the Family,” which eventually morphed into “The Dick Van Dyke Show.” When David Susskind suggested, in a somewhat offensive interview, that women should not work, Mary retorted, “I could waste a lot more energy sitting around chatting with other gals all day.” She became exactly what the network was horrified by: a contemporary woman. She also insisted on wearing pants, which broke new ground. (As a former junior high school teacher who insisted on wearing pants suits in 1969 at a time when they were banned, I could relate.) Throughout the documentary, we learn just how groundbreaking Mary Tyler Moore would become. This was just the beginning. In interviews, Mary referred to the period as “An unenlightened time. I believe in figuring out a way to contribute.” At the end of the 5-year run of “The Dick Van Dyke Show” Mary was a hot property who charmed men without antagonizing their wives. She had a comic flair that no less an expert than Lucille Ball recognized and applauded. She was offered a picture deal with Universal and---unusual for the time---had the right to refuse to do pictures that she did not think would benefit her image. However, in order to be given permission to star in a musical version of “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” on Broadway, Mary would give up that right of refusal. Following the Broadway bomb the show became, she would end up in films like “Change of Habit” (1969) opposite Elvis. In 1968, when she was 32, a miscarriage led to her diagnosis of a diabetes. With a blood sugar level of 700, she was fortunate to have been discovered to have the disease, which would end her life at the age of 80 in 2017. Broadway having bombed, CBS offered her her own show, and Mary and Grant Tinker, her then-husband, jumped at the chance. Tinker saw that forming their own company would be beneficial and Mary Tyler Moore Enterprises was born. Tinker ran the business and Mary Tyler Moore was the figurehead and the talent. At one time, MTM Enterprises had 6 shows on the air at once. Meanwhile, Tinker hired Jim Brooks and Allan Burns to write Mary's show, which would place Mary Tyler Moore in Minneapolis as a woman making it on her own at the age of thirty as an independent entity. I remember how groundbreaking it was for the goal to be not just to marry ASA{. but to be independent and live on one’s own. My own mother had lived the life accepted by today's women in 1927, so, for me, Mary was embodying the idea of utilizing female talent for more than just making babies and cleaning the house. Ironically, at this point, in her real-life Mary Tyler Moore had never been on her own; she had been married since she was 18 years old. The entire idea of pushing young women into marriage was covered in 1979’s “Kramer versus Kramer,” where Meryl Streep articulated this “never been on my own” status all the way to 5 Oscars. Mary Tyler Moore lived the fifties ideal of marriage after school "as soon as possible," but, personally, she remained mired in marital bliss until she was 44 years old when she and Tinker divorced and she moved to New York City. The show that Mary Tyler Moore launched, about a thirtyish woman making it on her own in the Midwest at a small TV station, was a risk. It was almost killed by a terrible time slot, until Fred Silverman took over the network, axed a lot of comedies like “Green Acres’ and moved “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” into the best time slot on television. It was, as Rosie O’Donnell termed it, “Appointment TV” and placed her show on the same night as “All in the Family” and alongside Bob Newhart’s show on Saturday nights. The rest is history, as the talented cast garnered multiple awards and still has one of the best endings of any series sitcom on television, past or present. Mary Tyler Moore won 7 Emmies, and 3 Golden Globes, and earned an Oscar nomination (for “Ordinary People”). And, as the documentary terms it, “As Mary Tyle Moore goes, so goes the nation,” which also meant welcoming the 1973 Supreme Court decision to allow women the right to decide whether or not to have an abortion. In 1980, immediately after her divorce from Tinker, Mary conquered Broadway with her performance replacing Tony-winner Tom Conti in the play “Whose Life Is It, Anyway?” Meanwhile, she described herself as “going through adolescence” in New York City, as she was said to be involved with Michael Lindsay-Hogg, the director of the play. She was socializing after years of marriage. However, she was drinking more than she should have been, and, as he noted, sometimes that could lead to belligerence on her part. She would curb this possibly inherited tendency towards alcoholism through a stint at the Betty Ford Clinic. In 1980, Mary Tyler Moore was nominated as Best Actress for her role as Beth in “Ordinary People” opposite Donald Sutherland and Timothy Hutton. Director Robert Redford said he had always been fascinated by the possibility of a dark side to MTM, who might have been brittle inside, harboring a pensiveness, anger, hurt, and confusion over such issues as her inability to connect meaningfully with her son Richard. In 1980 Richard, then aged 24, would die of a gunshot wound. The documentary says he had a gun collection, was inherently clumsy, and it was an accident. Three weeks after his death, MTM would be nominated for an Oscar as Best Actress for her role in “Ordinary People.” She would also lost her younger sister, Elizabeth, age 21, to suicide and her younger brother John would die of kidney cancer as she held his hand. Mary met Dr. Robert Levine, her third husband when he cared for her ailing mother in 1982. The line from the documentary is that “She fell in love for the first time in her life,” (which seems debatable.) However, the 14-years-younger Levine would remain her husband till the end. Her friends say that he may have kept her alive for an additional ten years, as she was hospitalized numerous times. The couple was devoted to one another and lived a bucolic life in rural Connecticut. The now 73-year-old Levine reached out to Lena Waithe (“Ready Player One,” “Master of None”) after reading an interview in “Vanity Fair,” in which she expressed an interest in doing a documentary about Mary Tyler Moore’s life. When asked about his decision to share his private film of Mary with Producer/Director/Writer Waite, Dr.Levine said, to laughter, “To have a Black queer girl from the South side of Chicago want to tell her story. Are you kidding me?” Dr. Levine was asked what surprised him after seeing the film, and he responded, “I had never seen the bridal shower footage with Betty White. It was simple and natural. She talked about me making her a tuna fish sandwich in the middle of the night. Things like that had the most impact. In life, it is the simple kindnesses that really have the most impact. The journey of her life was the journey of women in this country.  As a human being, she felt the need to keep going forward.  I didn’t want a derivative feeling. A new voice coming forward (Lena Waithe) was interesting to me.” Waithe added, “I wanted to give a real sense of how she was as a person." The decision to use voice-over(s) rather than the talking head documentary approach was said to be Waithe’s. The documentary is long, at 2 hours, but it is very good.  I would highly recommend it if you were or are a fan of Mary Tyler Moore’s work. She helped raise over $2 billion for Juvenile Diabetes and gave many other working women a model that remains groundbreaking. Will you smile if I admit I was wrong?
About what?
Miracles. Events with astronomical odds of occurring like… oxygen turning into gold. I’ve longed to witness such an event, and yet I neglect that in human coupling millions upon millions of cells compete to create life for generation after generation until, finally, your mother loves a man, Edward Blake, the Comedian. A man she has every reason to hate and out of that contradiction, against unfathomable odds… It’s you. Only you that emerged. To distill so specific a form from all that chaos… is like turning air into gold. A miracle. And so, I was wrong. Now dry your eyes, and let’s go home.

An Old Fashioned Girl truly is the snide and morally superior stepsister to Little Women. it feels like an awkward first draft of Little Women only it was published a year later.
instead of four distinct sisters with realistic but charming personalities and quirks we get Polly, who reads like a less likable Anne Shirley, and who is the quintessential ‘well I’m just a simple country gal’. Polly has no personality beyond being hardworking and virtuous. at least if she were more arrogant about said virtue she’d be interesting.
It’s never explained how her and the rich city mouse Fanny became friends beyond some vague reference to their mothers. It’s beyond me why they stay friends since Fanny is insecure and bitchy to Polly and Polly is deeply uncomfortable with just about everything Fanny enjoys. It honestly reads like they’re only friends so Alcott can shoehorn in Polly’s romance with Fanny’s brother Tom.
Tom reads like a duller and more obnoxious Laurie. His personality is rich frat boy. He has like one redeemable moment. He’s attracted to Polly because she’s poor and virtuous and doesn’t wear makeup unlike his evil fiancee Trixie. Instead of Laurie larking around with Jo we get Tom being a sullen manchild for the entire second half of the novel.
When Tom and Fanny’s family goes bankrupt instead of the crushing depiction of poverty we get in Little Women of the Marches’ neighbors, here we get ‘rich family moves into cute little cottage, sells some furniture, is fine’.
Tom is thrown out of college for being a shithead and it has zero consequences because his father’s bankruptcy eclipses it. he has no marketable skills and is saved by a job offer from Polly’s brother out West doing who knows what because Alcott doesn’t even bother to explain the business. the romantic reunion is like three lines between Polly and Tom and there’s no tension because they’re obviously going to get together after her brother saved his ass.

The March Sisters at Christmas
From one (1) glance at Tumblr I suspect this is a minority opinion, but IDC, I just watched this modern AU where the girls are in their twenties and everybody lives, and I found it AN UTTER DELIGHT.
(Except for the absolutely hideous casting of both John and Laurie; like, what is THAT, who invited Stoner Face and Frat Bro* to this show. Bhaer on the other hand...the age difference now appears to be like five years max, and he is very swoon-worthy indeed; a bit more generic and yet a significant improvement over Gerwig’s attempt to give this character a youthful eye candy makeover.
*Although I guess this sort of casting is the only way to ever get me 100% on board with Jo shoving Teddy into the friendzone and locking the door. That attempted kiss had me very MY EYES!!)
Also, the premise is that their mom is planning to sell the family home, because it’s too big now that the girls are moving out and more importantly, is costing them a fortune in maintenance and repairs, so while their mom is out of the country for two months tending to their injured father, they decide to tackle all the home renovations in hopes of convincing their parents to stay.
Because of the compressed timeline, it has to get creative in choosing which beats of the original to adapt and mirror in a new context, but I think it’s honestly awesome the way it pulls this off. I had love in my heart for the 2018 modern AU, but this is better! And not even just because Beth lives, without even getting so much as a head cold.
A few other notes on casting, which is mostly great:
-Mr. Laurence is a sassy delight.
-Meg and Jo are unnervingly blonde in this one, but they do at least look a lot alike so I bought it. I always want Jo to be the prettiest in the group, but this one has a definite tomboy look and attitude that is definitely true to character.
(Also Meg is a type A law school student who runs around making vision boards, which is hilarious to me)
-Beth is SO PRETTY and so perfect with her big eyes and sad “but this is our HOME!” faces, omg. Movies almost always get their Beth casting right, but this gal’s my favorite ever.
-This is also the first adaptation that’s ever made me completely love Amy. Which is especially incredible because she’s a total ho, and frequently a drunken one at that. But she has curly red hair and is basically the cutest imp I’ve ever seen, to the point that I couldn't be mad at her even when she set the house on fire. (accidentally, and with only a small amount of damage, but she SET their beautiful old HOUSE on FIRE by being a dumbass who tried to fix the wiring, like that's a job a non-professional should be doing even in a newer house, let alone a historic one that hasn’t been updated in decades.)

Candy Cane Christmas (Lifetime, 2020)
I like Christmas.
Starring: Beverly Mitchell, Mark Ghanimé, Trudy Weiss, Derek Johns
Plot Synopsis: It's the Christmas season, the favorite time of year for Phoebe Saunders, half owner/operator of Seeing Green Flower Shop along with her childhood best friend, Laurie Danes. Phoebe is set in her traditions in all aspects of life, which makes this season potentially not as special when she learns that her favorite Christmas tradition, Candy Cane Lane - a street in her old neighborhood decorated by the residents - not happening for the first time since she was a child with Louise McGraw, the long time organizer, moving, and all the other residents losing interest. Laurie sees this as an opportunity for Phoebe as she's felt Phoebe's traditions have stifled her life, preventing her from experiencing new things. In finding other things to fill the void left by the absence of Candy Cane Lane, Phoebe meets Eric Kelton, a veterinarian. Eric has shut himself off from love since the demise of his last serious relationship, this Christmas the first since that break-up. That first encounter between Phoebe and Eric leads to a second chance encounter, with many more chance encounters to come. Although there is an attraction between the two, they have just as many moments of the stars not aligning for them to embark on a relationship as they do those chance encounters. What happens between the two of them may be affected by if there is a special something to replace Phoebe's beloved Candy Candy Lane.(x)
In My Humble Opinion: Candy Cane Christmas has a plot. See that giant plot synopsis? Obviously, there is a story happening in Candy Cane Christmas. But also, not really. At the beginning of the movie, the female lead is told that Candy Cane Lane is shutting down and the lead just has to deal with it. There’s no grand Save Our Candy Cane Lane campaign. There is no evil land developer to fall in love with even though he’s ruining everything. There is ... nothing. There is just the idea of having to move on from the past to make way for the future.
That’s it. That’s the whole movie. It’s weirdly plotless, but incredibly pleasant? The entire time I didn’t really have a clue what was going on (because not much was going on) but I was just half-heartedly paying attention, happy enough to enjoy the two leads enjoying each other.
A concept I come back to time and time again while reviewing these films is the concept of a “laundry folding movie”. A laundry folding movie is a movie that is pleasant enough to follow along with but doesn’t demand your attention while watching. You can fold a load of laundry while watching, you can even put it away while leaving it on in the background and when you come back to the movie, you will feel like you have not missed anything important.
Candy Cane Christmas is the epitome of a laundry folding movie. It is disposable entertainment. Incredibly pleasant background noise while you do other things. During the holiday season, there’s a value in that. There are decorations to hang and online background stores to browse and blog posts to write and sometimes you need a nice little movie to set the ambience. Candy Cane Christmas does fulfills that need.
Watch If: You have a bagel for lunch everyday, if you wanted to open up a training school for ballerina astronauts as a kid, or if bows are more your speed.
Skip If: You think there is a problem with being a funny pages gal, if you think going out with your elderly aunt 3x a week is a pretty happening social life, or if Santa has taken your decorations back due to lack of use.
Final Rating:  ★ ★ ★ ☆ ☆

Meet Laureline Schmitt, my applicant for @eeriesims‘ Clary! I’m sorry I’m so bad at editing pfffttt.
P.S, outfit shown is her “date outfit” hehe <3
All the details are under the cut :o)
The General Deetz:
Name: Laureline Schmitt.
Birthday: Currently 28 years old, born on the 23rd of June 1991.
Astrological Info: Cancer sun, Scorpio moon, and Scorpio rising.
Myer-Briggs Personality Type: INFP-A
Species: Human but has witch-blood on her mother’s side which she’s very proud of.
Height: 5’7, but does stretches she found on the internet every night before bed in the hopes of becoming taller.
Sexual Orientation: Lesbian; doesn’t matter if you are cisgender or transgender, she just loves all the ladies.
Gender/Pronouns: Female, she/her pronouns.
Nicknames: Bun by her parents and close relatives and usually Laurie and Laurel by everyone else, but she really doesn’t mind.
Occupation in Glimmerbrook: She markets herself as somewhat of a “Ghost-Whisperer” - basically, she just helps the Glimmerbrook residences with any haunted house problems and is skilled at settling any issues between the living and dead to help maintain balance in the community. It combines her love of people, her good mediating skills, and her life-long fascination with ghosts. She isn’t paid super-highly considering the amount of work she puts in, but she just really enjoys her work. Her aunt always offers to send her some money here and there but Laurie is good at staying afloat.
Hobbies: She enjoys collecting antiques and fun knick-knacks, not necessarily for the purpose of curating and selling, but it does give her comfort to know she does have a flow of income to fall back on if it ever came down to it. She also enjoys reading and baking and all the nice homebody things.
Fun Facts:
1). She really loves anything peanut-butter flavoured (PB and J? Pssshh skip the J! On second thought, maybe even skip on the bread…..).
2). She religiously wears the green eyeliner her aunty gave her back when she was a teenager (yes she’s used the same eyeliner for 10+ years…sure, her aunty who’s a witch did put a never-ending spell on it but on the other hand GROSS!).
3). She HAS to go for a bike every night after dinner….if she doesn’t she can’t sleep.
4). Broke her nose as a kid when she tried to walk through a brick wall like the ghost character in her favourite show….she did not succeed but she now has a funny ice-breaker up her sleeve!
5). Is a firm believer in ditching the bra.
6). Her dad took her to get a tattoo when she was 18 and it doesn’t really have a particular meaning, she just thought it looked cool.
7). Laurel is not all too fussed about fashion, like the outfits she pulls together aren’t show-stopping, but she always likes to match her headscarf to whatever she puts on that day.
8). Her wardrobe is made up of exclusively op-shop finds and hand-me-downs from her aunt and mum. Well, apart from shoes, because she has quite wide feet.
9). She’s been a vegetarian for as long as she can remember; she never liked how eating meat made her feel, and she has a love for all animals, especially cats…..and frogs!
10). Speaking of cats, she does have a little black cat named “Bazzy” short for Basil whom she treats like a toddler (yes she did specifically adopt a black cat for the #witchaesthetic).
Questions, Questions, Questions!:
1). How did Laurel meet Clary?
Laurel was out on her usual evening bike-ride. As she was coasting past the public library, her eyes were drawn to the entry of the building. Specifically, someone going down the steps. Someone she’s never seen before. Laurel watched as the dark-haired beauty looked up, locked eyes with Laurel, and flashed a bright-white smile. All the way home, Laurel’s mind was cloudy as she replayed the moment. She didn’t really know what she felt about the girl she later learned was named Clary, but boy was she intrigued. Over the next few weeks, Laurel began noticing the newcomer as she ran her errands; it's not that she was too shy to say hi or anything, but she just enjoyed admiring her from a distance.
2). What was Laurel’s first impression of Clary?
In the moment, she was a little stunned by Clary; not necessarily in a “love at first sight” kind of way, but stunned nonetheless. It wasn’t one thing that caught Laurel’s attention, but a culmination of details; something about Clary’s whole aura just really drew Laurel in.
3). Laurel’s ideal dates?
Laurel finds people, including herself especially, are less awkward when they have something to do, an activity, to help ground the date, therefore for Laurel the perfect first-date would be biking to a beautiful private spot of Glimmerbrook for a picnic and a deep chat.
If this is say the third or fourth date she’d be more than eager to invite them over to her house for a movie night complete with caramel popcorn made on her wood-burning stove, or going to the beach to explore around the caves in Glimmerbrook and have a swim.
4). What’s Laurel’s ideal relationship?
In a romantic relationship, Laurel seeks a balanced give and take dynamic; while she loves to give and do for others, she does appreciate being cared for too; in the past she has been taken advantage of because she is so giving. Another thing Laurel really needs in a relationship is the opportunity to explain herself; she knows she can be a bit unaware, and most of the time her intentions are 100% good. She also would like someone who matches her calm energy and optimistic view on the world. Laurel is very positive and forgiving to herself and others, so negativity will start to weigh down on Laurel and cause her a lot of pain. She also wants a loving relationship, as Laurel herself is a very loving person, which has turned a couple of people away as she can move a little quickly in a relationship in some ways, even though she takes life so carefully usually; she just wants to hurry up to the ‘married for 40 years and we still lie in bed in the morning telling each other why we’re thankful for their existence’ kind of stage.
5). What’s Laurel’s Personality Like?:
Laurel is a very calm and loving gal. One of her big strengths is being able to objectively look at things and shrug negativity off; say if someone at the fruit shop yelled at her for using the scale because she didn’t see the sign asking customers to not use it, she’d just apologize, explain it was a simple mistake, and move on with her day; she’s usually not a dweller, she prefers to focus on the present.
She isn’t very adventurous, and doesn’t like to travel very far from Glimmerbrook, its her home. She thrives on the happiness of the people surrounding her, and does her best to make everyone happy, and is the perfect shoulder to cry on.
She doesn’t like complicatedness, she likes a breezy life, so she can have the tendency to distance herself from people who are hot and cold type of people, or people who don’t make their intentions clear, and can be impatient with people who take longer to open up, but she’s gotten a lot better over the years at being more open-minded and aware of others more nuanced feelings.
On that topic, she can struggle to see things from other’s pov in the sense that she can’t fully understand that not everyone can be as optimistic and idealistic as her, which is probably her worst flaw in a lot of ways.

Disney+ What To Watch: My Top 10 Favourite Disney Live-Action Remakes
Tumblr media
#2. 101 Dalmatians
Shockingly yes, the mid-90s live-action remake of my favourite animated movie of all time is not my favourite live-action remake, however it is up there as one of the best for several reasons.
First and foremost, real-life dalmatians. Whether or not these dogs are actually real or some of the animatronics provided by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop like the farm animals were, these dalmatian puppies are simply adorable. Seeing these puppies being born and playing around in the Dearly home make me so happy every time I see them and also when they are running across the snowy fields towards the Dearlys after escaping Cruella, heartwarming stuff.
Secondly, speaking of the De Vil, Glenn Close as Cruella De Vil is the original perfect casting just as more modern day Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, Robert Downy Jr. as Iron Man and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman.
Not only does she embody what the original animated version of the villain personified, but because this movie combines the best parts of the animated movie and original novel, this version of Cruella is both very realistic to how an everyday fashionista is but also comes across potentially more devilish than the animated version.
The story is simple, but I disagree with that being a bad thing. Disney has so many fantastical movies that, for the mid-90s, would not translate well into live-action, they barely do in modern day. So having one it’s earlier more grounded hits to be one of the first mainstream live-action movies I thought was quite a smart move on their part because, even with the animatronics and possible cinematography trickery with the dogs, all they would really have to focus on getting right is the same portion of the movie that both Mary Poppins and Bedknobs and Broomsticks had to contend with 20 years prior.
One thing that never gets old for me is how fresh Glenn Close’s performance is every time I see the movie. It’s almost like every time I see it I find new nuance to her performance that I never discovered before.
Also, as much as I enjoyed the Badduns in the original animated feature, Hugh Laurie and Mark Williams as Jasper and Horace is not necessarily idyllic casting but brilliant casting none the less. It’s also a great introduction to Hugh Laurie for people that didn’t grow up on Blackadder and for Mark Williams about 5 years before the start of the Harry Potter movies.
In fact, obviously making the animals simply animals in this movie rather than anthropomorphic characters draws more attention to the human characters, because while they were important to the animated movie, aside from Cruella the main focus was the dogs.
Here though, Roger and Anita are just as fleshed out as they were in the animated original, in fact Anita moreso as she has a job and more of a solid connection to Cruella than simply being an old school friend.
The introduction of Cruella’s assistant Alonzo. another Blackadder alumnus who actually was technically replaced by Hugh Laurie in the franchise, is also another great addition because, not only does it add more comedy relief, but it shows that Cruella is cruel to everyone not just those who side against her.
Mr. Skinner as well is probably one of the most intimidating characters in a Disney movie, particularly seeing this as a 4-5 year old he was absolutely terrifying and the best part is, as I got older I learned to understand his traumatic backstory of having his throat clawed open.
The movie doesn’t have songs like the original but it doesn’t need them, having that jazzified rendition of “Cruella De Vil” in the end credits is all this movie needs.
Speaking of the ending, elevating the movie forward to the Dearly’s adopting the 84 abandoned dalmatian puppies rescued from Cruella along with the 15 they already owned which forced them to get a bigger place and actually seeing that bigger place complete with a newborn baby was a great ending to a movie, particularly after the establishment that Roger was able to afford it after he finally creates a world-class video game based on the movie’s adventure.
I also really enjoyed making Roger a struggling video game designer, because to me it is more unique than a struggling musician which we have seen countless times before.
They truly kept the best part of the original movie, they had that great meeting between Roger and Anita at the park, they had a different iconic introduction for Cruella than the original where she was introduced through her song, but here just having her march through her office building with her pelt sweeping behind her like the Devil Wears Prada was just so delicious.
The villain’s comeuppance scene also didn’t feel like the typical Disney live-action movie villain getting their comeuppance, it felt earned and it mattered. There was just such a great feel to this movie every time I see it. Right from when that acorn drops down the branches in the Great Oaks Entertainment logo screen to the closing credits with Dr. John singing “Cruella De Vil” I can’t say how much I love this movie.
So what do you guys think? Post your comments and check out more Disney+ What to Watch Top 10s as well as more Top 10 Lists and other posts.

yo.... nancy and laurie being gal pals and talking about their favorite things from the 70s and 80s since they both grew up in the same era 👀 (they’re sitting 5 feet apart because they’re not gay right? 👀👀👀)
👀 Just a couple of girls being gals right?  👀
The two girls giggled, sitting at the campfire, as they talked. Nancy was so happy to find someone to confide in like Laurie, the woman was amazing. She was the most resourceful out of the other survivors and was more than happy to teach the others her tricks. Laurie felt the same way, enjoying her company with Nancy. There were so few people she actually had something in common with, the only other one was Feng, and sadly Feng wasn’t the best at holding a conversation.
“That’s so cute!”
“It was more embarrassing if I’m being honest. I know it made my brother happy. but dressing up for that stupid game...” Her words trailed off, thinking back to the old DnD campaigns she would play with Mike. Laurie snickered softly. “Oh come on, I bet you looked adorable.”
Nancy couldn’t help but blush a little, rubbing the back of her neck. “You’re lucky you’re an only child, having siblings can be a pain in the ass sometimes...”
Laurie shrugged in response. “I guess. I don’t mind kids though, most of them appreciate having someone older take them seriously.” She said, her mind immediately going to little Tommy. She hoped he was doing okay...
The two both had people waiting for them at home, and it filled them with anxiety, wondering if they’re okay and if they would ever show up in this realm as well. Thankfully, they had each other to lean on, to keep them both grounded.
