No 64 Bourbons Bracket matchup tonight. No tasting notes. I am simply sipping on pours of these bourbons, seeing how they play off of each other and how they interconnect with the music. I am not listening to metal tonight. Cheers!

Fun Facts about Gran and the history of The Quarter
- Immigrated to America in 1921 at eight years old. Was the youngest of nine children.
- Her father had served in the first world war. His favorite pastimes were terrorizing racists and criticizing the English, which is why they had to immigrate.
- Her mother was a suffragette and was kicked out of her catholic girls school as a teenager for fistfighting a nun.
- Her oldest sister, Molly, ran a speakeasy and ran the Gotham chapter of the Irish Mob. Something my Aunt Rachel (Mollys great granddaughter) still does.
- Basically all of the Irish Walkers are hell raisers.
- they moved to The Quarter (where I grew up) which was originally a largely irish neighborhood in Gotham but was racially integrated by 1921.
- The Quarter was considered it's own city until the 1990s and they did whatever the fuck they felt like. And what they felt like doing was harassing the KKK/people they found displeasing, like the city government/cops and marrying whomever they wanted.
- My great grandmother's first husband was named Freddie Walker and he died a year after they got married from cancer. They were 16 and 17 at the time.
- At 17 she met my great grandfather John Liu (he's still alive at 110, he's also a badass) who was 18. They immediately were like "yes please." Which I dont understand, because I'm asexual, but they immediately wanted to do the devil's tango.
The sideways waltz.
The Squaredance of love. Intercourse. Whatever. I hate knowing this about my elderly great grandparents.
- Gotham decided, at this point, they needed to regulate The Quarter. So they tried to outlaw interracial marriage.
- They tried to do the same thing in the late 1700s but this failed, because the people in the Quarter 'could not read' the edict and beat up anyone who tried to read it to them, so the authorities gave up.
- The judge in charge of the area (Jack O'Donnell), laughed in their faces and made a law that said if the woman got pregnant and the man took her last name, then they could get married. This led to a lot of fake pregnancies, so many false alarms, it's honestly hilarious.
- Gran, who was very very catholic, got pregnant and she and John were married. The KKK tried to stop the wedding and got shot at by Molly's gang, which also happened with hilarious regularity.
- Molly apparently just showed up at random weddings and shot at anyone who tried to disrupt it. She was never arrested and died at 114 years old. Great Grandad is looking over my shoulder and he wants you to all know she only died because death snuck up on her.
- Gran had 11 children with John, including my Grandma Alice.
- She was involved in the civil rights movements and in Metahuman rights groups.
- Gran beat up a Neo-Nazi with her cane.

Old Grand-Dad 114 Bourbon
You might have a serious bourbon drinker in your family. Like someone who is 60. A grandad or an older gentleman. Maybe someone who was an offensive lineman in the B1G Ten.
This is a no-nonsense, big, brash bourbon. This isn’t maple finished. It isn’t sauternes finished. No port finished, either. This is just big, bold bourbon.
Even the bottle is thick and squat, as if you needed a warning about what you are about to get inside.
I opened this and poured it an HOUR before I tasted it. It really needs that much time. This is a big boy. Give it time to stretch out.
On the nose you will get cinnamon, clove, graham crackers, black and white cracked pepper, allspice, burnt caramel
On the palate, this bourbon is full and hot, even before you swallow and even if you add some water. You feel the heat on your tongue - this is the kind of bourbon that your grandfather (duh) would pour for your and then judge your entire existence on how you respond to it. No pressure.
The heat is as much alcohol as peppery price, hot cinnamon and allspice. Wood and caramel and graham crackers round out the note.
114 proof

A few of my favorite things (recently).
- If you are lucky to be in Braxton Brewing’s distribution footprint, I highly recommend their collaborative releases with Graeter’s Ice Cream.   This sweet milk stout was made with cocoa nibs and raspberry puree.  It’s dessert.
- What even is Grisette?
A) a common edible woodland mushroom
B) a young working-class Frenchwoman
C) a Belgian-style ale originally brewed in the Hainaut province to be the beer of the miners in the area.
All of the above but only the last one can be purchased at Monnick Brewing Co. and it’s très peachy!
-  I’m rarely tempted to buy more bourbon but when Fred Minnick recommends his new favorite every day sipper for under $50, I’m listening.  I was on my own Saturday so I decided to have a look for the Old Ezra 7 Barrel Strength.  I didn’t look very hard.  My first stop was at Westport Whiskey & Wine where Steven shook his head  “Sorry, sold out. We only got a case.” then he poured me an ounce of Old Forester 1910.  The 1920 is better.
Never mind, I spent the next two hours drinking/tasting at least a dozen whiskies with strangers and it was a blast.  On the way home I decided to stop in a small bottle shop along my route.  I  dismissed the idea of stopping earlier in favor the infinitely better stocked WWW where people were sipping all the Pappy’s, Antique Collection, and high end Scotch.  Of course there it sat on the shelf for $39 and I decided it was a manageable gamble.  Winner Winner Chicken Dinner!
It’s a four out of five tool player on the cheap.  While Old Ezra’s nose is only typical, on first sip, it’s sensuously soft mouth feel is illicit as Aria’s eager kisses.  The taste is classic rich brown sugar with black walnuts on the back end.  Speaking of this beauty’s back end, it just keeps going and going making you warm up the middle.  The price point is the final tool and while there are other fine bourbons as cheap, none of those are 117 barrel proofers.
Old Grandad at 114 is a tasty smack but thin as gram’s lips.  Henry McKenna 10 is a peachy bouquet and soft as butter but doesn’t leave you stinging and wanting another.  Russel’s Reserve Single Barrel and Ridgemont 1792 Full Proof are a couple others than come to mind with the Russel’s delivering the nutty taste and Ridgemont giving the silky tongue and wanton finish.
Yesterday, I tasted a bunch of whiskey including ryes, single-malts, and blends.  For the most part I like them all but a big disappointment was the Sazerac 18.  It had the enhanced green grass notes of Saz but none of the body or finish I expect in a well aged and expensive whiskey.
Now what?

Always Delightful! - My Hero, Nanny. (The Portrait)
My Great Grandmother who lived to be 97; she just delighted in life and bought joy to everyone she met, and was around. She would laugh away at things until she cried with tears.
She walked around with a cane and always had colour coordinated outfits. I remember her pearls, gold watch and cardigans. She would always have a scarf because a bit of a draft drove her crazy.
Her home, a flat where she lived alone in Fulford, York was set out perfectly, everything in its place. She delighted in her balcony and flowers. They were very special to her, like people. Pansies were a favourite.
I remember, everything was scented with mint, talcum powder, skin lotion and lavender, very soothing. She would insist we ate something whenever we visited her. At least a Mr. Kipling's apple pie with custard or an extra ripe banana or apple.
She would have biscuit tins full of old black and white photos and go over her life stories about her mother and father and husband and many many siblings and cousins. I remember, "Our" Ethyl. She repeated the same stories to us, many times.
She was in Love with my Great Auntie Freda (Her niece) in Dewsbury and would go on holiday to stay with her once a year. She absolutely adored her.
She was just content as can be leading her own lifestyle.
She told us that her Archie, her husband, who had passed at least thirty to forty years ago was enough for her. She was happy and was not interested in having a carry on with another man like all these young people. 😆🙃😂 She was so overjoyed I was born on his birthday, May 6th.
When my sister was born and named, "Ellen" in her honour, she was surprised and said, "But that's my name!" Haha
Everyday she had a little drop of sherry or brandy before bed. At Christmas my Mum would make a giant bowl of very strong Festive punch for everyone. Nanny liked to be in control and take good care of herself and so she insisted on only eating the pieces of fruit from inside the drink. Every Christmas time she got immediately tipsy after eating the fruit and fell fast asleep smiling in the chair, wearing her paper hat, surrounded by people. She honestly believed eating the fruit had less of an impact than drinking.
She loved our dogs, German shepherd, Max and rescue Border Collie mix, Linda. They would sit with her.
She gave everyone she met a memorable interaction. I wish you could have known her too. I am currently trying to always think about how happy she was being true to herself.
She adored her son-in-law, my Grandad George Jackson. He would pick her up in the car and drive her around across the Yorkshire dales and garden centres. Watching them both talking, back and forth and walking together was wonderful. So so funny because as I mentioned before she could not hear so well but had a strong sense of what she thought she had heard, and regardless would just continue any conversation on a whole other tangent.
I remember trips to traditional Yorkshire places like Betty’s, Harrogate, Helmsley and Rippon where she would like to have a toasted tea cake with butter, or a scone, butter with jam, and a cup of tea.
Recently I told my mum I may have fractured my finger in the Summer, without realising at the time; which I have done before. She told me that I sounded just like my Nanny because she had a long story for the physical state of each of her hard working arthritic fingers. She would talk about the incident with a turnip knife and many more.
Many memories have come up for me recently. I miss and cherish her dearly. Now I'm older I realise how she was genuinely excited to have our company.
When she said someone's name she was very firm, her Granddaughters, "Our Pam and Our Lizzie!" ❤️❤️
Ellen Nappy, My Great Grandmother.' I drew and painted this from life in my late teens. She would have been 114 on March 20th, 2019. Drawing #RosannaJacksonWright #RoseJW #Art #GreatGrandmother #EllenNappy #Portrait #Life

Mint julep: The origins of the Derby’s official drink
(CNN)This May 5th and 6th, during the 143rd Kentucky Derby, 320 bartenders will douse 232,000 pounds of crushed ice with 19,200 liters of bourbon and 4,000 pounds of mint, ultimately serving up approximately 127,000 mint juleps to around 160,000 thirsty Derby and Oaks race attendees.
"The mint julep has probably been with us since the very first Kentucky Derby," says Chris Goodlett, senior curator of collections at the Kentucky Derby Museum, which is adjacent to the Churchill Downs racetrack in Louisville, Kentucky.
Juleps -- mint and sugar stirred with crushed ice and spirits like bourbon and rum -- were a staple of genteel society below the Mason-Dixon line since the early 1800s, guzzled by Virginian farmers in the morning as a restorative.
The link between juleps and the racetrack dates back to at least the 1820s, when references appear to sterling silver julep cups being awarded as trophies to first-place jockeys. "It ties together two of Kentucky's most well-known industries: horse racing and bourbon," says Goodlett.
Meriwether Lewis Clark Jr. built the Churchill Downs facility and inaugurated the debut Kentucky Derby in 1875. The grandson of William Clark of the 1804 expedition fame, Clark Jr. was a colorful figure in his own right, known for ending arguments by brandishing a gun.
The first bit of famous Derby julep lore occurred in 1877 when the event welcomed a celebrity visitor: the famous Polish actress Helena Modjeska. As legend has it, Clark toasted to Helena as she was passed a very large mint julep, meant for sharing with a group. Helena liked it so much she kept it for herself and ordered another.
By the 1920s, the drink was an ingrained enough ritual at the Derby that at the onset of Prohibition, Southern newspapers were filled with accounts of journalists bemoaning the fact that they wouldn't be able to sip their beloved juleps at the races any longer.
But it wasn't till 1939 that the mint julep actually became the event's official drink. Racetrack managers realized that visitors were stealing the water glasses that juleps were served in, and decided to start selling the glasses as souvenirs.
Today, the julep is embedded in Derby ceremony itself: at the Winner's Party, the governor of Kentucky toasts to the victor with a sterling silver julep cup.
Of course, it's not mere historical coincidence that juleps became such a popular accessory at the race. Properly made, the mint julep is one of the most delicious and refreshing drinks in the American cocktail pantheon, and one best imbibed at an unhurried pace.
The ice slowly melts inside the frosted julep tin, fusing with golden-brown bourbon and the oils released from fresh mint. The boozy nectar formed as a result has been the next best thing to air-conditioning since the 19th century.
The Derby is popularly known as the "Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports," but the mint julep is a drink built for the long haul.
Kentucky Derby Mint Julep
The Kentucky Derby pours Old Forester bourbon in their juleps, but high-quality, high-proof bourbons like Old Grandad 114 or Blanton's can give the drink a stronger backbone and richer flavor.
2 oz bourbon
1 tbsp mint syrup
Ice
Make a simple syrup by boiling two cups sugar and two cups of water till dissolved. Once cooled, add six or eight sprigs of fresh mint and refrigerate overnight. To make one julep, add one tablespoon mint syrup and two ounces bourbon to a julep tin, and then add crushed ice while stirring till frost forms. Mound ice on top, garnish generously with mint, and serve with a straw.

I told you that I wasn’t listening to metal tonight. Feel free to follow this playlist on Spotify, if you can find it and are so inclined. I was on a huge Pearl Jam kick yesterday. Today I am on a big Wilco kick : mostly Sky Blue Sky. Right now “You Are My Face” loudly plays and it has all the complexity of a batch of Booker’s. What can I say, I am a Dad. How can I not love Wilco: Dad rock heroes?
Cheers!

“The mint julep has probably been with us since the very first Kentucky Derby,” says Chris Goodlett, senior curator of collections at the Kentucky Derby Museum, which is adjacent to the Churchill Downs racetrack in Louisville, Kentucky.
Juleps — mint and sugar stirred with crushed ice and spirits like bourbon and rum — were a staple of genteel society below the Mason-Dixon line since the early 1800s, guzzled by Virginian farmers in the morning as a restorative.
The link between juleps and the racetrack dates back to at least the 1820s, when references appear to sterling silver julep cups being awarded as trophies to first-place jockeys. “It ties together two of Kentucky’s most well-known industries: horse racing and bourbon,” says Goodlett.
By the 1920s, the drink was an ingrained enough ritual at the Derby that at the onset of Prohibition, Southern newspapers were filled with accounts of journalists bemoaning the fact that they wouldn’t be able to sip their beloved juleps at the races any longer.
But it wasn’t till 1939 that the mint julep actually became the event’s official drink. Racetrack managers realized that visitors were stealing the water glasses that juleps were served in, and decided to start selling the glasses as souvenirs.
Today, the julep is embedded in Derby ceremony itself: at the Winner’s Party, the governor of Kentucky toasts to the victor with a sterling silver julep cup.
Of course, it’s not mere historical coincidence that juleps became such a popular accessory at the race.
The Derby is popularly known as the “Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports,” but the mint julep is a drink built for the long haul.
Kentucky Derby Mint Julep
The Kentucky Derby pours Old Forester bourbon in their juleps, but high-quality, high-proof bourbons like Old Grandad 114 or Blanton’s can give the drink a stronger backbone and richer flavor.
