What are your favourite time periods besides Roman empire?
I'm actually a Late Republic kind of guy, idc much about the empire except for Caligula, but! to answer your question:
12th-14th century italy, imperial china (specifically the ming dynasty), colonial-revolutionary philippines, fucking. colonial america (or amrev, as some people refer to it. this one I hate admitting because I'm so fucking disinterested in the romanticized version of it that a lot of people enjoy, but I've been obsessed since I was 7 and when I was living in new england I spent all my free time going to reenactment events and museums)

Today I was once again reminded, that the royal line of the Chŏnju Yi clan is absolute insanity. Because they really went from zero to one hundred in like....three generations tops....
Just as a little reminder:
T’aejo, the first king of the Yi Dynasty (1335-1408): eight sons, five daughters
Chŏngjong, son of T’aejo (1357-1419): fifteen sons (two not acknowledged),  eight daughters
T’aejong, son of T’aejo (1367-1422) (yes, the one that fell from a horse that one time): twelve sons (+ four that died in infancy), seventeen daughters (+ one that died in infancy)
Sejong the Great, son of T’aejong (1397-1450): EIGHTEEN SONS, four daughters (three died in infancy)
......so yeh....uhh that’s where we start off
and now we get to the thing that started this tangent:
The line of Prince Hyoryŏng (1296-1486), the second of T’aejong’s twelve sons, recorded seven sons, 34 grandsons, 92 great-grandsons, and 152 great-great grandsons. (source: Edward W. Wagner, “The Korean CHokpo as a Historical Source,” in Studies in Asian Generalogy, ed. Spencer J. Palmer (Provo, Utah: Brigham Young University Press, 1972), 149.)
And I am not going to go count the daughters as well....bc wtf...

TWTHH Bonus: Honeymoon Avenue
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pairing: general!Seonghwa x wife!reader
AU: arranged marriage au (Joseon era)
Word Count: 2.7k
Summary: Life has been hell ever since your mother's passing many years ago. Despite being from a prominent family, you've never received the privileges associated with it. It only got worse with the arrival of your stepmother and her daughters. When the intimidating General Park was in search of a wife, your father seized the opportunity to dispose of you, simultaneously securing a connection with the powerful general—killing two birds with one stone.
A/N: This picks up directly from the final part of TWTHH, and takes place before the events of Wooyoung's spinoff.

You let out a small groan as you woke up from your slumber, feeling a familiar pair of arms tightening their hold around you. Your heart skipped a beat as you remembered where you were, blinking a few times to clear your vision and take in the surroundings you recognised as Seonghwa's private quarters.
Warmth rushed to your cheeks as you felt your husband's steady breath against the bare skin of your shoulder from behind. Shyness washed over you when you realised you were both still completely bare beneath the fabric of his comforter.
Memories of the intimacy from the previous night flooded your mind, and you buried your face in the pillow. It was as if you could still feel every touch, every kiss, and every moment of pleasure he had given you. So, this was how it felt to be loved so passionately. You hoped for nothing more than for him to be your first and last.
"Good morning, my love. I see you're up," his deep voice greeted, sounding even deeper than usual as he had only just woken up. He leaned in to whisper sensually into your ear before planting a soft kiss on your cheek, "Did you sleep well?"
Turning to face him, you nodded meekly, biting your lip, "I did, Hwa. Good morning to you too," you replied, feeling your breath hitch as his gaze focused solely on your lips.
He nodded in response, "Good, so did I." Without hesitation, he cupped your cheek and pressed his lips firmly against yours.
Your eyes fluttered shut the moment his familiar lips met yours. Kissing him back as if it were second nature, you wished for this moment to last forever as his larger frame enveloped yours, the skin-to-skin contact creating an intimacy that made you feel closer than ever. His ability to make you feel vulnerable yet safe at the same time still filled you with wonder. At that moment, his presence was all-encompassing; he was all you could see and think of.
I can't believe this man is all mine.
Seonghwa, equally content, felt his heart swell with affection for you. Caressing your cheek, he tilted his head to deepen the kiss, struggling to control his breathing when you bravely reached up to run your fingers through his hair, gently tugging at it. Despite witnessing your growing boldness since his return from war, your reciprocation of his affections still stirred his heart.
I'm yours and only yours, my love.
As you finally broke the kiss to catch your breath, he grinned and murmured, "Damn, Lady Park, who would've thought you'd be such an excellent kisser." Despite the blush creeping up your cheeks, you scoffed playfully. Moving to lay your head on his chest, you traced patterns on his skin with your finger, "What do you know, General Park? You speak as though you've kissed anyone other than me."
His pride swelled as he nodded in defeat to your response. Day by day, you were increasingly embodying the essence of the general's wife with your newfound demeanour. It wasn't that you needed to change for him; rather, it was remarkable to witness your transformation into a confident woman who knew her worth, having shed the old shell crafted by your so-called family. Reflecting on his time away at war, he began to see it as a blessing in disguise. Perhaps it was necessary for you to undergo further personal growth.
Nestling into the curve of his neck, you pulled the comforter up higher to conceal your front. A shiver raced down your spine as his hand traced gentle patterns on your bare back beneath the fabric, making you feel slightly bashful at being so exposed to him. He smirked, placing a kiss on your neck and teasing, "Are you getting shy now, my wife? There's no need to cover up or hide from me; I've already seen everything."
"You can be so annoying, you know that?" Rolling your eyes, you playfully pushed at his chest, but he easily resisted, his strength overpowering your feeble attempts. With feather-light kisses dancing across your skin, he tickled you, eliciting a giggle. Chuckling, he remarked, "Oh, come on. I miss the bold Lady Park who took charge last night."
Blushing, you let out an embarrassed squeal, "Oh, quit it! Stop reminding me!" He chuckled, hugging you close against him, his voice teasing as he whispered in your ear, "Remember how badly you wanted me to undo your hanbok?"
"Shut up, Park Seonghwa, or else—"
"Or else what, my dear Lady Park?"
Your husband's smug grin only fueled your frustration. Summoning a surge of determination, you swiftly flipped him onto the bed, looming over him as you straddled his hips, "I'll make you regret it," you declared, a playful glare in your eyes.
His heart skipped a beat as he looked up at you, struck by your beauty with your long hair framing your face like a curtain.
"Go ahead, my love. Make me regret."
Unbeknownst to the two, Eunsook and the group of maids assigned to bathe the couple all exchanged sheepish glances. The head maid cleared her throat, shooting a stern look at the young maids to silence them for fear of alerting you both, ordering in a soft voice, "We'll come back later. It seems the master and mistress are not quite prepared to begin their day just yet."
Jongho was taken aback to see the elderly woman return with the maids she had brought along, supposedly to get the couple ready for the day, "Huh? Are you all finished already? That was fast."
Dismissing the maids, Eunsook offered the assistant a knowing smile, "It appears the master and mistress are, um... still occupied at the moment. We'll come back later to check on them. For now, please ensure no one disturbs them."
His ears turned red as he registered what she meant by that, nodding quickly, "Y-yes, of course! I'll make sure no one passes through."
As half a day slipped away, you and Seonghwa finally emerged from his quarters, ready to receive your baths. The maids couldn't contain their giggles as they noticed the new marks adorning your skin, evidence of the passionate night—and morning—you and the general had shared. These marks were different from your old scars—they spoke of love and affection rather than pain. You pouted at their laughter, but they only laughed harder, "Enough, you meanies."
Eunsook softened as she washed your hair, "We're just happy for you, mistress. You are happy, aren't you?"
You bit your lip, nodding, "I am happy. The happiest woman on earth, if possible."
"Then that's all that matters to us."
Their hearts warmed at the beautiful smile that graced your face, wishing for nothing more than for you to remain content for as long as possible. You, the miracle who had brought so much light into the once sombre halls of the general's estate, truly deserved all the happiness in the world.
On the other side of the room, while assisting his master with the final touches of his outfit for the day, Jongho couldn't help but notice Seonghwa's dreamy expression and the persistent little smile on his handsome face.
"You seem to be in a good mood, sir," the assistant remarked as he focused on fastening the ribbons on the general's attire. Your husband nodded, "I am. Who would've thought married life isn't half as bad as we initially believed. In fact, it's pretty damn amazing. You should try it too, Jongho."
Blinking rapidly, the younger man raised a brow, "Try what? Marriage? Sir, I have no time for that. I'd make a terrible husband."
Seonghwa sighed, "See, that's your problem. You're always too dedicated, never making time for yourself. As much as I value your dedication, I want you to find happiness too."
"I am content, sir."
"Oh, come on, that's not what I meant—"
"Your outfit is ready, sir. You're all set."
Shaking his head in resignation, the general rubbed his temples, "Wooyoung was right about you. You need to get a life."
"He said what? The audacity—"
Heaving a deep sigh, Seonghwa rubbed his eyes after going over all the reports Mingi had prepared detailing every aspect of the recent war with Ruhon—the strategies employed and areas for improvement. The documents required his stamp of approval before they were shipped off to be stored in the palace archives. The military strategist had provided such detailed explanations that they were now giving him a headache.
"Gosh, I can't decide whether I love or hate Officer Song for these long ass reports. They're thorough to the point of being exhausting," he said with a shake of his head, "Is that everything, Jongho?"
The assistant nodded, gathering the completed scrolls to be delivered to San for a final vetting, "Yes, sir. That was the last of it. You're finished for the day. If that is all, I should probably hand these over to Royal Secretary Choi immediately."
"Oh, thank god. Go ahead, Jongho."
With a respectful bow, the younger man did not waste another second making a beeline for the exit, his mind focused on nothing else but his task. The general stared after him with a defeated huff, wishing for his aide to be a little less uptight and to live a little, "I should probably find him a wife."
Speaking of wives, he was reminded of his own. Suddenly, all concerns for Jongho's love life were pushed to the back of his mind and forgotten. Excitedly rising from his seat, his heart raced with anticipation as he set off to find you. He felt bad for leaving you alone for most of the day due to his work, but now he couldn't wait to have you all to himself.
Oh, it would feel like paradise.
He frowned, his steps faltering when he found you nowhere in the House of Lotus. Hastening his pace, he headed to the garden, where you often spent time tending to the flowers with Eunsook and the maids, only to find it empty. As a last resort, he even checked Yunho's quarters, torn between relief at finding the physician alone and frustration at not finding you.
Could you be upset with him for not spending time with you all day? No, that didn't seem like you at all. You were literally the most understanding person he knew. So, where could you be hiding? The wildest scenarios began to creep into his mind when he couldn't find you. What if his enemies had somehow infiltrated the estate? What if you were kidnapped? What if—
His thoughts were interrupted by the sight of you in the living hall, seated with Hongjoong and Wooyoung, seemingly engrossed in something. The two men watched you intently, particularly the investigator, who seemed more focused on your face than whatever you were doing. With a clearing of his throat, Seonghwa crossed his arms over his chest, "What are you three up to?"
Turning to glare at him, the dressmaker hushed him, "Keep it down, you doofus! She's trying to concentrate!"
Feeling offended, your husband narrowed his eyes and stepped closer to finally see what you had been up to; you were focused on learning embroidery. It dawned on him that Hongjoong must be teaching you a bit about his craft. He softened as he observed the deeply immersed look on your face, with your tongue poking out of the corner of your lips in concentration.
Good lord, she looks adorable.
In his attempt to move closer to you, he was met with yet another warning glare, causing annoyance to bubble within him. While he was grateful for the company Hongjoong and Wooyoung provided you in his absence, a part of him couldn't shake the irritation of seeing you accompanied by other men, even if they were his friends.
At that moment, he questioned why the guys were still around. The dressmaker, physician, and investigator had only been summoned while he was away at war to watch over you. Now that he was back home, he realised their presence was no longer necessary. It was then that he made a firm decision. From now on, he was determined to spend this time after your wedding alone with you.
The general wasted no time gathering his three friends that evening as soon as your embroidery lesson came to an end. With a polite yet firm tone, he explained his desire to have some alone time with you, dismissing them from the estate. Hongjoong and Yunho exchanged knowing glances, understanding the importance of the honeymoon period for passionate newlyweds like yourselves. Although Wooyoung was reluctant to go, he ultimately knew he had no choice but to comply with Seonghwa's request.
In a matter of days, the trio officially left the estate, returning to their own lives. This left you and your husband alone at last, ready to begin this new chapter of your lives together.
True to his expectations, the weeks that followed were pure bliss. He requested time off from work, and His Majesty was happy to oblige. He spent nearly every waking hour glued to you. By this point, everyone in the estate knew better than to interrupt when the master and mistress wanted privacy, ensuring the couple had all the intimate moments they needed. There were even jokes among the staff that a little Park might be on the way soon at this rate.
And perhaps their predictions weren't so far-fetched after all. It was on a fine day when you were spending another lovely afternoon in the House of Lotus practising embroidering, or at least tried to, with your husband seated behind you, his arms encircling your frame, that you began to show signs of sickness.
Leaving kisses all over your neck, he tickled you endlessly, causing you to giggle and push him away, "Hwa, please, I can't focus when you keep—" Before you could finish your sentence, a sudden wave of nausea hit you, and you let out a small gasp, pressing a hand to your chest to contain it.
Concerned, he immediately stopped and turned you around gently, "What is it, my love? Are you alright?"
"I-I'm fine... the feeling's gone, maybe it was something I ate," you reassured him when he suggested summoning the physician. Eventually, he relented and left you alone.
The second time occurred during dinner, with the kitchen having prepared one of your favourite dishes. Instead of savouring it as you normally would, you pressed a hand to your nose, "You okay, my wife?" you nodded and attempted to eat, only to end up retching from the smell of the dish.
Once again, you insisted you were fine and refused to see the doctor. He let you be, telling himself that if anything else were to happen, he wouldn't hesitate to call Yunho over. You convinced him that you must have caught the cold or something, seemingly fine after some rest.
The breaking point came during a leisurely stroll together in the garden. He tightened his hold on you when he noticed you swaying slightly. Smiling up at him, you reassured him, "I'm fine, Hwa. You worry too much." To ease his worries, you pressed your lips against his. For a moment, it worked, and he lost himself in the sweet kiss.
However, when you pulled back, seemingly out of breath, his heart lurched in his chest as your eyes rolled back, and he didn't waste a second catching your limp form in his arms.
"Jongho! Get Physician Jung here now!"
The sense of terror hit Seonghwa like a tidal wave as he found himself cradling you, unconscious, on his bed. Seeing you like this scared him more than any war ever could. Yunho rushed in shortly after, and the general reluctantly stepped aside to let the doctor examine you. Gently, he held your wrist, reading your pulse, after ensuring you were physically alright.
A few tense moments later, the taller man turned around with a smile, and your husband held his breath, "Congratulations, General Park. Your wife is with child."
Emotions surged within your husband as he released a sigh of relief, tears gathering in his eyes. The realisation dawned on him—of course, you were pregnant. How had he not considered that sooner? Slowly, the significance of it all began to sink in. The love of his life was carrying his child.
I'm going to be a father.

Part 4 < > Part 6
****
They combed the entire palace, but Hongjoong knew they'd never find her. Sookymung lived here her entire life, knowing the secret passages and exits. With her supporters aiding her, she is likely on her way out of the city. Still, Hongjoong and San searched in the northern part of the palace grounds; Yunho and Yeosang searched the west while Jongho and Wooyoung took men to the east. He knew you were safe with Seonghwa in the harem, but he couldn’t help thinking of Sookmyung finding her way in there. Whether it is true or not, Sookmyung will believe you had a hand in this and come for you. She'd told him repeatedly how deeply she trusted you, bordering on being in "love" with you. Hongjoong couldn't stop himself from picturing her sneaking into your chambers, and plunging a knife into you like she'd done to his mother. He couldn't protect her, but he can protect you.
This fight was far from over.
By the time they returned to the harem, he found the other conspirators in the main room awaiting him. Jisoo spotted him first.
"Did you find her?"
"No," he shook his head. "She must have fled into the city. The city watch is on alert, but they won't find her." He looked at Wonshik, "We were betrayed. You said we had support on our side," he snapped at him angrily, "You said they'd stand with us against her. I don't know if you've noticed, but at least half of them defended Sookmyung instead of arresting her."
"It was the Dukes of Daegu, Gongju, and Ulleungdo who defected," Wonshik said. "I am not surprised by this. They have much to lose if Sookmyung is not on the throne. I should have foreseen this outcome-"
"-Yes, you should have," he looked about the room for you, "Where is YN?" He needed to see you.
"She's asleep, Your Grace," Chaewon told him.
"Alone?" His eyebrows raised at this serious oversight. "When Sookmyung is out there?"
"She's being closely guarded," said Jisoo.
"By who?"
"Seojoon and Minho-"
"-No," Hongjoong interrupted, "None of Sookmyung’s old guards. Until they have proven their loyalty to their new queen, I do not want any of the old guards overseeing YN."
"Your Grace," she began, "Seojoon and Minho have proven themselves to be loyal servants to The Crown, not specifically Sookmyung."
"I don't care." He looked to the men behind him. If he should trust any of them, it should be the men who stood at his side. "San, Mingi, I want you to watch over YN."
"Are you-" Mingi began to say, but Hongjoong cut him off.
"-I am. San, you used to be an army captain. Mingi, you worked for pirate hunters. I trust you both to keep her safe."
There are so few people he can trust, he realized. Sookmyung knew about this coupe. Someone within their circle whispered their treason, and she gathered people loyal to her. It is the only explanation. She’d known they’d come for her eventually, but you being revealed as her sister distracted her. Even if she does not get her throne back, she will make sure you suffer. Hongjoong saw, watching San and Mingi leave the room, that he cannot simply let anyone be around you. Sookmyung’s allies may have stationed spies within the palace. One of them might even be ordered to kill you. He’d do everything in his power to make sure that never happened.
“What of the lords from Daegu, Gongju and Ulleungdo?” asked Seonghwa. “They’ll likely still be in the palace, if not already in the city.”
“I vote we round whoever remains,” said Advisor Junhan, “And hold them as hostages. We will send word to their families that unless they bend the knee to Queen YN, their children will continue to be imprisoned here.”
“No,” Wonshik disagreed, “If we do such a thing, we are no better than Sookmyung. We must continue searching for her.”
“But how?” asked Seonghwa. “We don’t have the men to spare for such a search. Besides, a whole host of men is a lot harder to hide.”
“I will write to Changbin,” Jisoo suggested. “He has plenty of connections and people to send about the kingdom for us.”
“Can they be trusted to not speak if captured?” asked Advisor Heechul. “Sookmyung’s methods of interrogation are horrendous. She may discover all she needs to know if she apprehends one of them.”
“They won’t talk,” said Hongjoong quietly. He thought of Naeun, who remained loyal until the very end. “Sookmyung tortured Naeun for hours, and she never said a word. Send word to Changbin,” he told Jisoo, “And tell him to plant his spies in the courts of Daegu, Gongju, and Ulleungdo. If Sookmyung is anywhere near those places, they might find out where.”
“Sookmyung will not make this an easy task,” noted Advisor Junhan. “I personally trained her in combat and martial arts. She is an excellent strategist-”
“-No, she is not,” argued Hongjoong. “She’s built her reputation as a great war strategist on lies and fear. It does not take military know-how to storm a castle and put it to the torch. Sookmyung only succeeded in war because she had advisors much more talented and knowledgeable than herself. Her conquest succeeded because she killed anybody who could possibly oppose her in the future, and installed people loyal to her in their place. That won’t happen again.”
“And what makes you so sure of this?” asked Wonshik, not challenging but curious.
“Because we’re on equal footing this time,” he told him. "She won’t have the support she had before. She's going to be outnumbered and surrounded.” If he's lucky, Sookmyung’s paranoia will cause her to lash out and behave rashly.
“And she’ll have you to contend with now,” added Seonghwa with a small grin.
“Forgive me, Your Grace,” interjected Advisor Junhan, “But you were a concubine for several years. I don’t think the people will-”
“-Hongjoong is the King of Wonju,” Seonghwa snapped. “He is the person the resistance wanted to lead them. He is a skilled swordsman, marksman, horse rider, and combat strategist. He knows Sookmyung just as well as anyone else in this room. If anybody could lead our armies to victory, it would be Hongjoong.”
“Us being her sex slaves will only endear us to the people more.”
It was Yunho who’d spoken. He stepped out from the shadowy doorway, pensive and serious. The healer. The physician. Yunho spent the past eight years personally attending to Sookmyung and her flowers”. He’d also been the most kind-hearted of them all.
“Everything we know about Sookmyung is not a fact in the kingdom,” he continued. “Those who have witnessed her cruelty only saw a percentage of it. When word reaches the masses that everything they’ve ever heard about her is true, as possibly worse than they believed, they won’t be so hasty to follow her. Just because the dukes who betrayed us side with her does not mean their bannermen or lords under their rule will.”
“Are you suggesting we let the truth come out?”
“Why not? By morning, everyone will know YN is her sister and will be crowned the new queen soon. I think it will do well to tarnish Sookmyung’s reputation a bit further.”
“We could also let it be released that Sookmyung forced YN to participate in her wrongdoings,” Yeosang said from his window perch nearby. “It may cause them to sympathize with her.”
“YN will need all the support she can gather,” said Jisoo. “Sookmyung may have military strength, but the support of the people is a powerful thing. If they see YN is someone they can rally around, they will stand with her.”
Yes, they will. Hongjoong knew the people of Wonju will follow him, and if you’re his wife and he’s your king consort, they will follow you too.
“We must coronate YN as soon as possible,” insisted Wonshik. “The sooner we have a crown on her head and official documents in place, the sooner we can gain support.”
“And when do you suggest we do this, Wonshik?” asked Hongjoong with a challenge in his voice. “Tomorrow morning? We cannot stage a coronation in a day. Besides, a public event might put YN in harm’s way. No, it is too soon.”
“YN must be given time to take in all of this,” Chaewon said from behind Jisoo. “If I may, Your Grace, suggest that we take a small grace period in the meantime? The council can set coronation plans and we can focus on other matters.”
“Other matters?” questioned Hongjoong.
“There is also another event that needs attention,” Jisoo answered. “Your marriage.”
“I would rather we focus our efforts on Sookmyung-” he began, but she intervened.
“A marriage between Hanseong and Wonju will be the distraction we need to buy us time.”
“And an opportunity for her to strike,” he retorted. “I do not want YN anywhere that Sookmyung could reach her.”
“And neither do we,” she said. “The wedding will be held in the palace behind closed doors and heavily guarded, if that pleases you.”
He thought for a moment, then said, “Let us put this to rest for now. I’d like to discuss this further with YN present.”
You likely do not even know about the arrangement. He knew you'd gone through enough for one night, and he wouldn't make it worse. The council, Queen Jisoo and Chaewon left the harem at his dismissal, bowing to him before making their exit. It felt odd having people bow to him. There'd been a time in his life where everybody knew when he was entering or leaving a room. But, they hadn't done that for years. It would be another thing he must get used to again.
He turned to look at the men left in the room: Seonghwa, Yunho, Yeosang, Wooyoung, San, and Jongho. He noticed they each held their veils in their hands. His hands clenched into fists whenever he wore the golden veil, which became a symbol of enslavement. He'd removed the red headband she'd given to single him out from the rest; a token of her affection, she’d claimed. Hongjoong knew better. Hongjoong withdrew the veil tucked into a pocket, and walked over to a nearby brazier. Hongjoong examined the long, sheer material dotted in gold and silver pieces. He remembered when Sookmyung gave it to him.
"You're mine now," he said to himself, recalling that moment in her tent. "And everyone will know it."
Hongjoong thought of his dead mother, laying lifeless and bloody on the floor of their family room. Sookmyung told him if his men laid down their arms, she'd spare his mother and siblings. She didn't. She cut them down without hesitation. Hongjoong's heart ached in his chest, and he breathed deeply. Sookmyung took everything from him: his family, his life, and his dignity. He replayed every awful moment in his mind, and swallowed back his tears. Running his thumb over the smooth jewels, taking in their shape and size, he realized he'd never wear this again. Even if somehow they lost, and she reclaimed her throne, he'd rather die than be her slave. He'll never wear this veil or this headband again. Angrily, Hongjoong threw the two articles into the fire. Standing by the fire, he watched the silk start to singe at the edges. The veil's mesh material began curling outward in certain parts. It felt cleansing, standing beside the burning coals and watching his chains melt. He is his own person.
Then another veil joined the fire. Then another, another, and another. Soon, all eight veils burned in the fire. Hongjoong glanced up to see tears welled up in Yeosang and Yunho's eyes, while Jongho and Seonghwa remained as stoic as himself. They're free now. They might not know what their futures hold, but they are their own men again.
"We will not be slaves again," he promised them, gulping the lump in his throat. "I swear it."
He felt a hand grab his gently, long fingers sliding between his own. Hongjoong looked to see tears escaping Seonghwa's lashes, falling down his cheeks to his sharp jawline. He couldn't help wiping them away with his sleeve.
"You'll never wear those masks again," he told him.
"I'd die first," said Jongho stiffly, gazing into the fire with watery eyes. "I'll slit my own throat before being her property again."
"Do not say such insane things," Yeosang frowned, taking his hand in his own.
"The only throat I want to slit is hers," Wooyoung said through gritted teeth, hands curling into fists at his sides. "She's hurt too many people to stay alive. She's too dangerous." He looked up at Hongjoong, "We have to win, we must stop her."
"We will," he assured him, unable to stop his own tears now.
He stared at them as they cried in the flames. Hongjoong vowed to succeed.
They must succeed.
****
Waking up the next morning felt surreal. You thought you might be lying somewhere between reality and sleep before you sensed a presence near your bed. Panic immediately struck you, and you clutched the sheets around you. The image of Sookmyung standing over your bed, eyes blazing with fury and holding a long knife made you tremble. You knew they wouldn't find her. Sookmyung always got her way, regardless of who she killed to get it. A thousand pleas for mercy bundled in your throat, and you screamed when you felt a hand touch your shoulder.
"Your Majesty, your Majesty!" a soft, gentle voice said over your panicked screams. You swatted at the figure, eyes closed to avoid meeting her eyes.
"Get away! Get away!" you cried, your heart pounding in your ears as the person managed to grab hold of your arms.
Then you felt somebody else at your opposite side, and you moved away from them. It took several minutes to register the white hanboks and the worried expressions of Sookmyung's former handmaidens. Aro, Saehee, Boram, and Dasom stood all around the bed, a bit frightened but mostly concerned. You never realized how similar the women looked. Short and skinny, Sookmyung made them wear their hair in long braids with the red colored daeng'gi at the end. In their pure white hanbok, they became almost indistinguishable. Sookmyung did this on purpose. Not only would she stand out against their white backdrop, but also stand taller and therefore appear more intimidating. Heat filled your cheeks, and you tucked a piece of hair behind your head, feeling embarrassed.
"Forgive me," you coughed, sitting up properly and covering your chest. "I...I didn't..."
"It's alright, Your Majesty," soothed Saehee. The eldest of the four, you often put her in charge of managing the other handmaidens in your absence. She sat beside you, taking your clammy hand in hers, "It's only us here. Nobody is going to hurt you."
"We wanted to see you," admitted Aro. Only fourteen-years-old, you'd spent a good amount of time training her to serve Sookmyung, but she still made mistakes as children do. Something Sookmyung did not forgive easily. "We heard what happened yesterday, and wanted to see if you were alright."
"I had breakfast brought for you," Boram told you, taking a seat on the bed. "You hadn't eaten properly since yesterday, and I knew you'd be hungry." Boram, always considerate and motherly in that sense. Due to her close relationship with the chef's son and her culinary knowledge, you let her handle Sookmyung's meals.
You supposed she'd be preparing your meals now.
“Did you know Mingi and San are outside your door?" whispered Dosam, who crawled onto the bed close to you. "I think they've been there all night." Dosam, while sweet, never hesitated to indulge in gossip. You knew Sookmyung often used her as a spy in the servant's quarters, but Dosam usually lied or told a half-truth. "They almost didn't let us in until we said Queen Jisoo ordered us to come here."
"It's like they didn't trust us!" huffed Boram, arms crossed. "What did they think we'd do? Strangle you?"
"I'm sure they meant no offense, Boram," you assured her. "They're only being cautious." You looked at Dosam, "Did they find her?"
They all shook their heads, and dread filled your stomach. Sookmyung was likely already out of the city, plotting your death as you sit there. You hugged your sheets around your torso, and shuddered. She knew all the passageways into the palace, and you're sure her allies across the city would help her. She could come at any moment, drag you into the dungeon, and torture you to death. The phantom sensation of nails being pulled from your fingers or needles pierced into your skin one by one sickened you. She'd delight in throwing you into The Box, since your discomfort of it amused her. The possibility caused you to flinch at Saehee's touch again.
"But you're safe here," she insisted, rubbing your back gently, "Hongjoong will make sure you're safe."
"Hongjoong?"
"Yes, he's been working closely with the advisors and Queen Jisoo," said Dosam. "I saw him with the Queen when she summoned us to her apartments. They looked like they were having a pretty serious conversation if you ask me.”
"Was my mother there?"
The women paused for a moment. "Which one?" asked Boram, cautiously.
You then remembered the most shocking part of the whole evening. All the confusion from the previous night returned, and added itself into the anxiousness rolling in your stomach. Queen Jisoo and King Siwon were your birth parents. They'd given you to their servants to keep a succession dispute. They'd done it in vain, since it is happening regardless of their efforts. You tried thinking of happy moments you had with the king and queen, but you only saw your mother and father when you did. Chaewon sang you lullabies whenever you had nightmares. Hyungshik always brought you pretty flowers or stones he'd found while tending to the gardens. They made sure you always ate well, and kept up with your studies. You knew you could turn to them in uncertain times. You didn't feel that way with Queen Jisoo, even if she was always kind and considerate of you.
"My mother," you repeated a bit more firmly. "Park Chaewon."
"She's with the queen," said Saehee.
"She was sitting with her and Hongjoong," Dosam told you.
"Did you hear what they were talking about?" asked Aro.
"No," she shook her head. "They stopped talking when I entered the room." You then saw the wayward glance she gave, "But I did hear them at the door."
"What did you hear?" you asked her, somewhat nervous to hear the answer.
Dosam did not answer right away. You recognized her hesitancy, since it was the same cower she'd give Sookmyung. She closed her eyes as if forced to say it, "They were talking about you marrying Hongjoong!"
Everyone on the bed gasped. You sat frozen in place, your brain trying to comprehend what she'd said. For a moment, you worried you may have heard her wrong. "What?"
"I heard Queen Jisoo say that a marriage between Wonju and Hanseong will be good for the future," she said hurriedly, "And that together you and Hongjoong can rebuild the kingdom."
"What? No...No, there's no way she's honestly considering..."
Hongjoong belonged to Sookmyung. He is her favorite flower, her most prized possession. If you married him, whatever plans she had will become especially heinous. Hongjoong's face came to the forefront of your mind. You thought about your conversation with him during the party. He'd told you that you worried so much about others, and rarely yourself. He'd said it in an amused tone, almost as if he found it cute. Hongjoong possibly thinking of you in any capacity outside of formality made your insides churn. You supposed a marriage between you made sense on paper, since he is a prince of Wonju and you're now a queen. But, thinking of marrying Hongjoong made your cheeks burn.
"He is handsome," Saehee noted, "And tender-hearted. I think he will make a fine husband."
"And he's a prince!" added Aro. "Now that Sookmyung isn't around, he can be a prince again."
"He's a king," Saehee corrected her. "His family is dead, right? That means he's King of Wonju now."
"Do you think you'll be his queen consort?" she asked you, bright eyed.
"Maybe," you shrugged. "I'm meant to be the Queen of Hanseong. I don't think we can both marry if we have separate thrones. Who will look over Wonju, if Hongjoong is far away?"
“They can find somebody," Saehee said. "You never know. Perhaps he has a cousin or distant relative somewhere who can handle Wonju for him?"
"Perhaps."
Marrying Hongjoong was meant to be a fantasy of yours. Thinking about being his wife, his closest friend, and confidant was supposed to remain in your head. You'd do your best to avoid looking at or talking to him because you know if you did, you'd fall deeper in love with him. It's similar to your feelings for Seonghwa, who showed you gentleness and reassurance last night. You knew showing too much attention towards them would upset Sookmyung. With her out of way, and word of a possible marriage in the air, the possibilities felt endless.
“Let us get you dressed,” concluded Saehee. “The Queen wishes to speak with you.”
“I can dress myself, Saehee,” you told her, wrapping yourself in the sheets and fixing your hair from your face. “It’s not necessary.”
“You’re going to be The Queen,” she said. “A queen always has handmaidens.”
“Unless…” Aro fiddled with the ribbon in her hair, “You wish to dismiss us?”
You saw the uncertainty show on their faces. None of them looked directly at you, and you frowned.
“Of course, I wouldn’t dismiss any of you,” you implored. “Why would I do such a thing? We have gone through so much together, and I care about each of you deeply.”
“I don’t know,” she shrugged. “You might not wish to have a stupid cry baby as you handmaiden,” she sniffled, and you saw her eyes water. “I’m always so clumsy and-”
“-And when have I shown annoyance at that?” you asked her gently. “When?”
“Never,” she sniffed. “You’re always so kind and patient with me.”
“I’m not a virgin!” Boram blurted out. When you all whipped your heads to her, she winced. “I’m not. I have not been for a long time. I knew the punishment for that, so I never said anything, but I am now. Vernon and I are in love,” she said to you in particular, “And he wants to marry me. I hope that it won’t upset or displease you.”
“Not at all,” you told her, taking her hand in your own. “You are not my property. All of you are free to love and marry freely.” You stood up from the bed, standing straight as you said, “My first order to all of you is to live as you wish. You are all going to remain my handmaidens, but you can do what you please outside of your duties. Wear whatever hanbok you like. Wear your hair however you wish. You belong to yourselves, not me.”
Their smiles lifted your spirits. You picked at the breakfast Boram placed in front of you while she and Dosam prepared a bath nearby. As good as it tasted, you found it hard to enjoy the food. Sookmyung slowly crept her way back into your mind, and you couldn’t stop yourself from thinking of her. Where did she go when she ran from the city guards? Who housed her right now? Did they know she liked to eat before she bathed? That she liked her soup piping hot, and her rice cooked to the perfect softness? You pitied whoever they put in charge of attending her. The poor girl won’t know the danger until it comes. You thought of the serving girl from a few nights ago who’d accidentally spilled wine. The girl lived, but you remember the long lashes on her bare skin and her painful sobs. Sookmyung found pleasure in her pain, but you did not.
“Your Majesty,” Saehee appeared from the hall with a long box and you immediately shook your head.
“-No, I won’t wear that,” you stopped her. “I won’t wear anything that’s hers.” It sounded almost like bringing yourself bad luck.
“This isn’t hers,” the woman insisted. “Queen Jisoo said she had some of her old hanboks stored away, and she thought you may like this one.”
“Oh…”
You watched her remove the top lid as you finished your breakfast. Red with gold cranes circled on the shoulders, several royal seals were painted into the long draped sleeves. The royal dragon emblem was part of the sash over the top coat; pond scenes with cranes and flowers painted along the stripes down the skirt. You recognized it at once. Queen Jisoo wore it at the last royal event she attended before King Siwon’s passing. She’d look regal and elegant. You spotted the same floral pins she’d worn in her hair that day, tucked into the braided bun at the nape of her neck.
“She wants me to wear this?” you asked, reaching forward to touch the soft satin fabric.
“Yes,” she nodded. “It’s gorgeous, isn’t it?”
She’d chosen this one for a reason. If there’s anyone you should be emulating, it should be The Peoples’ Queen, Queen Han Jisoo. You left the bed for the bath, sinking into the warm water and beginning to scrub yourself. Dosam moved to take the sponge from you, but you held it from her.
“I can bathe myself, Dosam,” you told her with a soft giggle.
“As you wish, Your Majesty.”
The words sounded weird when directed at you. You enjoyed the jasmine scented water as you contemplated the day. People everywhere must know the truth by now. What would things be like when you left the safety of this room? You finished your bath quickly, though you knew you could’ve taken as long as you wanted, and began drying and dressing yourself. Before you could pick up the undergarment layers, Saehee snatched it first.
“Let us at least dress you,” she said. “You’re a queen now. It’s considered an honor to attend to royalty.”
Was it? You certainly never felt honored when you dressed Sookmyung. Still, you allowed the four women to dress you. With each piece they slid onto you, you felt yourself slowly melting away. You’d never worn such finery before, and wearing the eoyeo meori felt different. Slowly, YN the Handmaiden became YN the Queen, and you didn’t know if you liked the queen yet. Sitting in front of the long mirror, looking yourself over as Dosam finished applying lip paint, you realize this is something you’ll be doing every morning. It didn’t matter if you wanted this or not. You must go through with this now, or otherwise all the effort put into it will be in vain.
“You look magnificent,” smiled Aro, who stood aside to look at you. “Hongjoong won’t be able to take his eyes off you.”
“I don’t look like myself,” you touched the smooth skirt between your fingers. “I don’t feel like myself.”
“It’ll take some adjustment, I expect,” assured Saehee. “But, a nice hanbok and a wig doesn’t mean you’re not still YN. You’re YN with a title, that’s all.”
You didn’t know how to explain that it’s more than that. Your sole responsibilities used to only be the handmaidens and Sookmyung. As a queen, everyone in the kingdom is your responsibility. How can you possibly accommodate and please so many people? Particularly people once ruled over by fear and anguish. You liked to think you had your mother, the advisors and Jisoo helping you. They wouldn’t allow you to fail.
“Think of all the good things you can do now that you’re queen,” Aro said, smiling. “You can help so many people.”
You knew she meant well, but that only filled you with more dread.
“And you’ll have Hongjoong beside you,” Dosam smirked, “He’s quite fond of you. I don’t think he’d let you fail.”
‘Fond of you’. Was he? Yes, Hongjoong made kind passive gestures towards you before, but nothing indicating ‘fondness’. As they led you out of your dressing room, you couldn’t imagine Hongjoong being ‘fond’ of you. Every time you thought of his soft giggle or the crinkle of his eyes, Sookmyung's face came up right behind it. You thought of his lips lightly brushing against yours, one hand holding your hand and the other around your waist. He’d taste like mint and smell of cinnamon, a combination that would unravel you in seconds, melting any guard you may have up around him. Hongjoong and you may have not spoken often, yet you could not help imagining that fondness being present.
“Good morning, Your Majesty.”
Seonghwa stood in the main room of the harem with San and Mingi. Yeosang, Yunho, Wooyoung and Jongho all sat around, enjoying a light breakfast spread put out for them. They all stood from their seats when you entered, and you immediately remembered you’d fallen asleep in the harem. Embarrassment filled your cheeks, and you did your best not to look away.
“I’d ask if you slept well,” he said, “But I’m afraid not many of us did.”
“I slept well,” you replied. You felt his eyes taking in every inch of your face, and this did not stop the daydreams from expanding further. Seonghwa and Hongjoong. Sookmyung could have two lovers. Why couldn’t you? “Thank you. I assume it was my mother who asked you to keep watch over me?”
“In fact, it was Hongjoong who insisted we keep you here,” he answered, “I only seconded it.” He approached you, “They’re waiting for you in Queen Jisoo’s residence. San and Mingi are sleeping off their guard duty, but Wooyoung, Yunho and myself will walk you there.”
“What about the other palace guards?”
“Hongjoong said he wasn’t comfortable with any of Sookmyung’s old guards watching over you,” he said. “We’ll be watching over you until you’ve chosen a suitable guard for yourself.”
“Does that displease you, Your Majesty?”
Wooyoung asked this with worry in his voice. You stared at him for a moment. His slim build made it easy for him to slip between trees and scurry through dense bushes like a shadow. You remembered Sookmyung complaining about how he can be so loud, but still able to pass through unnoticed. It’d taken them a week to find him when he’d escaped camp during the war. He’d also been the hardest for Sookmyung to break.
“Not at all, Wooyoung,” you answered him honestly. “I don’t believe I’d feel comfortable around anyone who pledged allegiance to Sookmyung, to be truthful.”
You then noticed the most obvious thing about the men: they did not wear their veils. They’d rid themselves of their shackles, and you smiled softly at them. “Shall we go now?” you asked, taking a timid step forward, “I don’t wish to keep my mother or The Queen waiting any longer.”
“Of course, when you wish, Your Majesty.”
Right. You’re meant to lead. Taking another step, you kept putting one foot in front of the other as the group followed you outside. Yunho and Wooyoung walked ahead, wearing swords at their sides and no longer hiding their faces behind veils. Your handmaidens flanked you, keeping their heads down, while Seonghwa came into step beside you.
“May I accompany you there, Your Majesty?” he asked.
“Yes,” you nodded. “It’s still so odd.”
“What is?”
“To be called ‘Your Majesty’,” you said. “It feels…wrong. It doesn’t suit me.”
“You’re the queen. It’s your title.”
“I still don’t know if I like it.”
“Then, what do you wish to be called?” he asked, “Give me a title and I’ll gladly call you by it.”
You gave it a thought, “Hm, I don’t know.”
“Alright, ‘I-Don’t-Know’,” he smirked, giving you an amused smile.
You laughed at his joke, some of the tension inside you deflating as you reached the harem entrance. The world felt different to you, but you weren’t sure how. You thought you might have woken up in a dream, and you’ll wake up any moment.
“I imagine it will take a while to adjust,” he said when you reached the palanquin. “A lot has changed overnight, and it must be a lot to take in for you.”
“It is,” you admitted with a sigh. You anxiously picked at the inside of your sleeve, standing in front of the palanquin. It wasn’t Sookmyung’s palanquin. Hers had been larger. “Hongjoong is with my mother?”
“He is,” he nodded. “He went ahead with her to talk to the advisors and discuss our next move. I’m sure they’ll inform you once you arrive.”
He let you climb into the palanquin first, then followed you in. Being in a close, intimate space with Seonghwa put you on edge. Light whiffs of sandalwood came from his clothes, which you came to enjoy very quickly. Once the footmen began moving towards the queen’s residency, you spoke.
“Has he slept at all?”
“A bit,” he said. “As I said, not all of us slept very well. The guards are still combing the city for Sookmyung, and word about last night is beginning to spread outside the capital. I imagine everyone will know about you, Sookmyung, and the throne by week’s end.” When saw the anxiousness in your face, he added, “I’m sorry this has happened so quickly, YN, and that you’re not being given sufficient time to adjust. It isn’t fair to anyone, but most of all you.”
“Thank you, Seonghwa,” you gave a soft smile, trying not to notice his round eyes gazing so intently at you. “Thank you for being here.”
“You’re my queen now,” he grinned, “I will be wherever you wish me to be.”
You smiled for a moment, before it instantly faded. “What’s wrong?” he asked, concerned. “Did I say something to offend you?”
“No, no, forgive me. It’s not you,” you insisted. “It’s…” you sighed, “Even with her gone, I still see you as hers. She kept you at such a far distance that it’s almost as if she still owns you.”
“She doesn’t,” he said firmly. “And she doesn’t own you either. We are our own people now. We can be whoever we choose to be,” he then added, “And be with whoever we wish.”
You bit your inner cheek to keep from smiling.

PLEASE REBLOG
Four Years Ago
“You have no choice in this matter, Y/N! You will go to him and you will stay there. We have no need for you, the people don’t want a queen. They want a king to rule them. Your brother is our heir.” Your mother scoffed and looked down at you in a disgusted manner.
“He’s only eight! So if you or father suddenly dies, then what? The people are left with a child for a ruler. That’s what you want? You’d just throw away your daughter just to have peace between the kingdoms?”
Your mother’s palm slapped across your face, “You will NOT speak to me that way! I am still your mother, you brat.”
“Not anymore. No mother gives away their child just for a peace treaty.” You spat in her face, picking up your hanbok’s end to walk away.
The Present
The King’s eyes bore into you, “Maybe I should’ve made you a concubine.” His disgusting smirk plastered his face, you turned your nose up to him, how dare he? You are of royal descent, you are a princess! Not some object for this man.
You turned your head and rolled your eyes, could this man get anymore revolting? You met the eyes of his son on the other side of the throne, his beautiful cat-like eyes. He was gorgeous and was nothing like his father in any way. Choi San, the most dreamy prince around. Women and girls fawned alike, but he only had eyes for you. Afterall, he was in love with you.
The king soon became surrounded by his actual concubines and dismissed his son and you, both away, saying he wanted to be alone.
You made your way back to your private chambers, glad you weren’t forced to share with the vile king. San ran after you, his hand grabbing your wrist, “Y/N, wait!”
You turned to face him, an eyebrow raised, “Yes, Prince San?”
He smiled and pulled you into a hidden section of the palace, “I wanted to see your cute face,” you smiled back at him and placed your hand on his chest, “and to say I’m sorry about my father, please remember to ignore him. I wanna take you away from here so bad.”
“San, you can’t just leave your duties, you’re the crown prince after all. And eventually, he’s gonna have you married. You know it won’t be me.” You sigh and release him, leaning your back on the stone wall, “I’m surprised I still have my status and not living in the dungeon yet.”
San smacked your shoulder, “Don’t say such things! You know I hate that, besides, he’s old as hell, if he dies before he can engage me. Then I’ll have you. I’ll get rid of all those concubines as I will never need them.”
His sweet words ached your heart, he was such a dreamer. You both knew his father wasn’t gonna die anytime soon, the man seemed immortal, his wife passed during San’s birth, which made him surround himself with women, forcing you to be by his side. You are his most beautiful piece, but he won’t touch you. Even said himself, you are just a prize for him, other than that, he has no means for you. He would still inappropriately touch you, but other than that, he usually ignored you.
Just why did he keep you around? To show you off? To say he owns the most beautiful princess ever? The most sought for woman? To keep you so no one else can have you? So you die alone? But you were loved, loved by his son. It’s not like you’re his step mom or anything, just someone trapped in his kingdom.
Tears escaped your eyes, “You know that's not true, San. Your day to get engaged will come soon, I’m sure of it. Then I will go back to being alone.”
San pulled you to his chest, “No, I will not allow it, you’re mine, and I want you to stay with me.” A few tears fell down his face, “I want only you.”
You nodded and held his cheeks in your hands, “I know, I know, but we can’t.”
When you finally push him away and leave him behind, tears flood his cheeks.
You sat on your bed, face in your hands, his father banished you to your chambers as he didn’t wanna see you around the palace at all. He was already tired of seeing your face, hopefully, you thought. If that was true, maybe he’d finally let you leave, or something else you dared not to think of.
A knock on your door interrupted your thoughts, “Princess Y/N? Crown Prince San would like to speak to you.” You dismiss your maiden and allow San in.
He quickly ran over to you once the door shut behind him. He tackled you to the bed, giggling, “Hi, Y/N, I missed you.”
You looked up at him before smacking his back, “San! You need to be careful! One of these days you’re gonna get caught.”
He giggled again and squished your cheeks in his hands, “What’s he gonna do? Nothing, I’m his only son and heir, and he can’t knock up his concubines.”
You gagged, “Don’t even talk about him.”
San sat up and pulled you to his chest, “Okay, okay. So, Y/N, I was thinking.”
You raise your brow at him, when he’s thinking it's never good.
“What is it?”
“Let’s run away together.”
“But-”
San halted your protests with his lips on yours, molding them in a warm and intimate kiss, “You don’t have a choice, we’re leaving, I’m abandoning my title. I want to be with you forever, I don’t care about being King if I can’t have you by my side.”
“I already had one of my servants prepare everything we need to leave with, I have the gold and some clothes for us. We will head five villages over, he will never look for us, trust me, my princess.”
San hikes you up and carries you out of the room, running towards the back of the palace, carefully dodging staff.
When he makes it to the carriage and nods away the servant, “Thank you, for everything, remember the story.” The servant smiles and bows.
“Farewell Prince San and Princess Y/N, may you two live peacefully.”
And thus began your journey to freedom, the story ends with two lovers living happily in a remote village, in a nice farm house, no one aware of their former statuses, just a happy couple living together till the end of their days. The king never found either of you, he eventually died of old age and a magistrate took over the kingdom.

In the starlit darkness of your apothecary, your voice comes out tender, red and raw as if the words scrape your throat on their way out. Your hands are flattened on the wooden table, your knees shaky but still thankfully enough to support you as you try to maintain your bravest face. But it's always futile when it's him you're facing. Your Yoongi.
Your Yoongi who only lets a small, sad smile flicker onto his lips before he is pulling you into his warm arms. He buries his face into the dip of your neck where your scent gathers, presses a tiny kiss beneath your jaw.
You feel the silk of his robes softly drag against your wrists. Feel his limbs tremble ever so slightly, even though he must be trying his utmost best to keep himself steady.
"I'm sorry," you whisper into his shoulder, wishing for yet another month that you had better news to give. More than blood staining your undergarments that you handwash until the red disappears into the water as if it had never existed in the first place, each scrub a fresh sting in your heart.
"Don't you dare."
Against you, Yoongi twitches, tenses. He breaks from you reluctantly, shifting until he's far enough away to look you in the eyes, hold you captive in his strong gaze.
"This is no fault of yours, janae," he says, tracing your cheek with the backs of his fingers. "Never."
This small act of affection makes the threat of tears known behind your eyes. Though you've grown hopelessly used to them in the past years, his kisses, his warmth, to have his kindness in the face of such failure is...
"Isn't it?" You pull away from him then, take a few steps away to your table where herbs and fine powders litter the tabletop, remnants of your day's work. "None of my brews have been effective."
"Yet," he says instantly, the word pressed out so intensely you almost believe him. "Effective yet."
"...It's just hard to watch her."
The beautiful queen. Well in the fifth month of being with child, her growing belly swells with love and happiness. She rubs oils you provide on her skin daily, willing to drink any bitter health tonic to ensure her babe's safety. As much as you love visiting her, chatting with her about all things related to the future heir of the country... You can feel your heart whimpering each time you see her. Ugly and jealous.
"We have time," Yoongi whispers, brushing a tendril of hair away from your forehead. "I promise."
"Okay." You exhale, letting him soothe your hurt. "And... I suppose being a while behind the queen will allow us to make good use of the clothing her child outgrows."
Yoongi raises a dark eyebrow at you. "Please. You think I would not personally order the most luxurious, newest clothing the country's top seamstresses can make for our precious baby?"
"Technically, her baby is yours too," you say with a small grin, even though you all know the truth.
He hums, amusement now playing on his lips. "Hoseok still has a difficult time keeping a neutral face when the advisors say the same. I had to order him to leave the chambers on more than one occasion already, lest he give everything away with that ever-changing expression of his."
"He can't help it. He's just so excited." You're grateful for this slight change of topic. "Do you think he'll tell Aera?"
"I don't know." Yoongi says that more often now, at least in your presence and Eunuch Kim's and sometimes even in front of the Queen. He's learned that kings don't need to know everything. That so many people within the palace are there to support him, even in his moments of falter. "I don't know if she is old enough to keep that secret. But eventually? Yes."
You place a hand on his chest and feel the thump of his heart beneath your fingertips. "And... will you... Will you tell their child when it is time?"
"Of course." His breath is warm with summer as it brushes over you, slightly bitter with the tea he uses to keep himself awake on advisor assembly days. "We are... one joined family now, as unconventional as it is. And if I have learned anything from my mother... every one of you deserve the truth. The queen, Hoseok, Aera, you..." His gentle fingers drift down to your stomach. "... and the little one that will join us eventually."
"Okay." You take his hand as you look into his eyes, read the absolute love, the sureity written there. You will trust in yourself as you do him, as you do the small pond rock that sits snugly in your right pocket, accompanying you through even the hardest hours. "Okay."

a/n: hey all! long time no see! if you're still here to read this--i'm SO grateful for you. i recently watched the Yoongi Road to D-Day movie and as soon as Daechwita came up, i was thrown back into this story and i just missed it so much. this mini was originally begun like a year ago in response to some comments from readers who were curious about what happened with our dear uinyeo-nim's wish to have a child! i wanted to show some of that struggle, some of the tenderness between them and how the world has changed in the few years since the end of the series :)

A/N: Ever since that special performance video of Warriors by San came out, I'm a changed person!! I wrote this chonky one within one weekend while playing the video on loop.
Tumblr media
Yeong-Ja got ushered into a room by several servants, who told her to stay there until the emperor would arrive. Before she could even ask when that would be the door got shut right in front of her nose, leaving her alone.
With a heavy sigh Yeong-Ja turned around and took a closer look at the room in front of her. While it definitely appeared luxurious - the room was basically as big as her old home - but except for a large bed there wasn’t much inside the room. It didn’t even have windows. There was only another sliding door, which probably led to the private quarters of the emperor.
Yeong-Ja stood in the middle of the room unsure what she was supposed to do besides waiting for the emperor. Should she stand somewhere specific or sit on the bed? She knew what was expected of her yet she couldn’t wrap her mind around the fact she had become a concubine in the span of only a few hours.
That morning Yeong-Ja had woken up and gone out to town since the market was open and she had hoped to buy a few things for her family. So while she bargained with one of the sellers, she got approached by a tall man in fancy clothes.
“Excuse me”, he said with an awkward smile, “I’d like to have a conversation with someone, who speaks for you.”
Yeong-Ja raised an eyebrow, forgetting the little quarrel with the seller as she turned towards the man and crossed her arms in front of her chest. “I’m able to speak for myself, sir.”
A twinkle in his eyes and the soft chuckle revealed his amusement even after he focused himself again with a short shake of his head. “I’d still like to inform your husband or any kind of relative that you’re chosen to become a concubine.”
For a split second everything around Yeong-Ja stopped. She stared at the stranger with wide eyes, needing several seconds to register what he just said. Once the heaviness of the message fought through and settled into her mind, her whole world started to crumble. She nodded almost mechanically as she asked the man to follow her, cutting her time at the market short.
Even when she brought him to his parents and sat beside them in the small dining area, somewhat listening to the words he had to say, her thoughts had travelled to a different place. While Yeong-Ja wasn’t the only woman at her age unmarried, it was rather uncommon. Her headstrong attitude and the fact she came from a poorer family were the reasons why she hadn’t been married yet. Though it hadn’t been a problem in her family, Yeong-Ja was incredibly thankful for that since she loved her independence.
“If you want to take something with you, Miss Yeong-Ja, now would be the time to get it.” The stranger, who had himself introduced as Park Seonghwa the head counsellor of the emperor, looked at her. A hint of pity and understanding swirling in his dark eyes.
Her mother had followed her to the sleeping area, laying a hand on her shoulder. She had tears in her eyes as she pulled her daughter into her arms. “You’ll have a better life at the palace”, she whispered and caressed the back of the younger woman. “Please take this with you.” With that her mother let go of her and walked over to a small cabinet. She pulled a box out from the farthest end and turned back to Yeong-Ja. “This was a gift from your great grandfather to your great grandmother. It’s supposed to be a lucky item. Wear it to receive the blessings -” she swallowed the lump inside her throat, her voice sounding choked up - “and to remember us.”
Yeong-Ja hiccuped as she accepted the gift with trembling fingers. She looked down at the fine silver necklace in her hands, seeing one turquoise stone added as a pendant. She closed her hands and clutched them against her chest, whispering her thanks while tears streamed down her cheeks.
Now inside the luxurious bedroom Yeong-Ja fumbled with the dozens of layers of clothes to reach for the pendant. She wrapped her fingers around the turquoise and felt the calm energy spreading throughout her body. With no way back she could only look ahead.
She noticed a bowl of water and several towels on a nightstand close to the bed. Yeong-Ja walked closer to the bowl, leaning over it and staring at her own reflection. She barely recognised herself and a frown appeared on her features.
That ghost-like face looking back at her wasn’t the woman she wanted to be. While the make-up looked magnificent and had been applied with the utmost care by the servants, Yeong-Ja couldn’t help herself but to hate it. She knew noble women liked to appear paler to show they didn’t work on fields in the sun, but Yeong-Ja was born and raised on such fields. She had a natural tan skin and any other colour made her look sick.
Without a second thought Yeong-Ja pushed the fabrics up her arms and dunked her hands into the bowl, cupping them and splashing water into her face. She rubbed her face meticulously and hoped to get rid of all the white make-up plastered on her skin.
Once she deemed her face clean, Yeong-Ja grabbed a towel and patted her skin dry. Her face already felt much lighter without all the make-up. Although the minute Yeong-Ja looked down at her body and saw all the layers of fancy fabric she felt like a fool again. Her face didn’t match this dress anymore. Yeong-Ja pursed her lips and brushed the sleeves of the fabric back down, feeling uncomfortable in all these layers. The young woman looked over her shoulder to the two closed doors, contemplating whether she should risk it and change or just stay put.
She swallowed and tried to listen intently to the sounds outside of the room. When she wasn’t able to pick up any words or steps, she decided to take the risk.
Yeong-Ja fumbled with the fabrics and the knots that held everything in place. It took her every ounce of self control to stay patient and not rip everything apart. Once she finally got rid of every layer and only stood in the finest silk underwear in the middle of the room, Yeong-Ja thought she was able to breathe again.
She bent down and started folding all the fabrics, placing them neatly in front of the nightstand. Yeong-Ja only kept the outer piece and a few pins. She draped the fabric over her body and secured it with the pins.
When Yeong-Ja was brought into the bedroom, the emperor - Choi San - arrived at the throne room. He barely kept the sigh inside his lungs when he saw Seonghwa waiting for him.
“Another victory, huh?” Seonghwa stepped next to San, trying to contain his grin. He could read San like a book and knew how annoyed his emperor was already.
“Which means another concubine.” San plopped down on the throne. He pushed his hair back with his hand before he fixed his eyes on the older man. “Why is the court getting a concubine every time I come back from a battle? They’re running away in the end.”
“Now, now. You make it out as if every concubine has fled so far. You still have a thriving harem, San.”
San only rolled his eyes and clicked his tongue, resting his chin on his hand. “Anything else I should know before I tell the servants to bring the new concubine to their quarters?” San only wanted to get a bath in peace, wanted to wash off all the grime and blood from the battlefield. He needed to rest and regain his strength again. San had used almost all of his power to keep the intruders in check and only with the help of his wolf was he able to overpower them.
“This one is different. Take at least a look at her.”
San zoned back into the conversation and shook his head. Whatever Seonghwa had told him just now, San only heard the last two sentences. He grimaced but decided to wave it off for now. With a dismissive hand gesture San got up from the throne and walked to the hidden door behind it. “I’ll think about it”, he told Seonghwa before he bid his goodbye and followed the wooden path towards his private quarters.
A servant rushed to his side, offering their assistance. They nodded in understanding with each order - preparing a bath and bringing the new concubine to their quarters - they received.
San opened the door to his private bedroom and closed it right behind him again. He trotted towards the bathroom and started stripping out of his clothes, which needed to be washed as well.
A sudden scream followed by frantic yelling, interrupted San in his undressing. Without regard to his appearance the emperor rushed towards the disturbance. He slammed the door to the concubine bedroom open and hurriedly stepped inside, his eyes jumping from corner to corner. San was ready to fight but except for a servant and a woman he never saw before he couldn’t sense any danger. “Wha-”
“I am so sorry, my emperor. I didn’t mean to disturb you with my yelling. I just wanted to take the concubine to her quarters when I saw what she did.” The servant bowed deeply as they apologised over and over again.
“Please”, San only said in a stern voice, successfully shutting up the servant. He looked around the room again, trying to understand what the servant meant. He inhaled deeply when a sudden wave hit his senses.
‘Smells good’, his wolf hummed, forcing San to inhale again. He even closed his eyes, focusing solely on the sweet scent invading his nose. When he opened his eyes again, they immediately landed on the new concubine.
Yeong-Ja had crossed her arms in front of her chest. She felt embarrassed for screaming when the servant tapped her shoulder. She hadn’t noticed them coming into the room and yelped in surprise from the sudden touch. Yeong-Ja also felt embarrassed for being scolded so harshly. While she had expected to get scolded, she had pictured it to be the emperor himself.
Her eyes fell on the man who had entered the room as well. She could feel the heat rising to her cheeks when Yeong-Ja saw the half-naked form of him. Involuntarily her eyes wandered over his toned upper body and well defined muscles. She took the tattoos adorning his body in as well, fascinated by the intricate painting of a wolf’s head on his left pec.
As her eyes continued to wander over his body she finally reached his face. The air inside her lungs nearly got stuck when Yeong-Ja saw the intense gaze on her. She locked eyes with him and the feeling of being a small prey spread throughout her whole body.
San glanced at the servant, telling them they were dismissed, before his eyes landed on the new concubine again.
His wolf rumbled inside of him, growling something about having found their mate. He eagerly wanted to cross the distance and get to the woman, wanted to touch her, smell her, scent her, take her and most importantly breed her.
San’s fingers twitched as he fought to keep control over his own body. Seonghwa’s words played in his mind again, while San stared at the woman in front of him. He noticed how she wasn’t turned into a doll-like human like all the other concubines before her. He also noticed how the clothes around her body weren’t as neatly placed.
‘Easier access’, his wolf nearly howled, keen with the choices that were made.
Yeong-Ja could have sworn she was on fire from the intensity of his gaze but at the same time one ice cold shiver after another ran down her spine. She could feel her heart pounding inside of her ribcage.
“May I know your name?”
The soft voice of the emperor - even though it sounded slightly strangled - surprised Yeong-Ja. She would love to simply listen to him all day, every day. “Yeong-Ja”, she introduced herself, bowing slightly in hopes it was enough courtesy towards the emperor.
San repeated her name, same as his inner wolf, getting a feeling of it on his tongue. “That is a beautiful name”, he complimented her as he suppressed another attempt of his wolf to pounce on her. “Have you been waiting for a long time?”
Yeong-Ja blinked several times, thinking about the question. She wasn’t even sure whether she could answer it or not. Without any windows Yeong-Ja wasn’t able to see how high the sun was and therefore unable to tell the time. Yet she knew it had been enough time for her to change her appearance. “Long enough to wash my face and dress differently.”
San’s eyes widened in surprise. He hadn’t expected such an answer and most importantly he hadn’t expected that she took the liberty to change her looks, disregarding everything the servants must have prepared for him. Before San could control himself, he let out a loud laugh. San held his stomach as he leaned back from the force of his laughter. The mental picture of the frustration from his servants and her just undoing everything that has been made, just got to him.
Yeong-Ja observed him silently, a small smile playing over her lips upon noticing the dimples on his face when he grinned brightly.
Once San calmed down again, he wiped the corner of his eyes. He still grinned, the amusement apparent in his voice as well. “Make yourself comfortable in this room. If you’re in need of anything don’t hesitate to call for a servant.”
Yeong-Ja nodded slowly, trying to hide the confusion that filled her thoughts. She thought the emperor would want her to undress and get on the bed so she could please him. Therefore she hadn’t expected something like this.
“I’d like to have breakfast with you tomorrow morning. Is that alright with you?” San ignored the warning growls from his wolf, telling him to stay with her. But San wanted to be a little more careful with her. He hoped by getting to know her first and taking it slow, Yeong-Ja might not fear him like most of the other concubines. And most importantly she hopefully wouldn’t run away.
Yeong-Ja had to remind herself of keeping it together and actually answer the emperor. Everything she witnessed from him so far contradicted all the rumours surrounding him. It was a miracle that she wasn’t too stunned to speak with him. “It would be a pleasure.”
San smiled and nodded shortly, before he bid his goodbye and walked back into his private chambers. Much to the dismay of his inner wolf.
Over the next weeks San ordered to bring more furniture into the concubine’s bedroom. While he could have admitted Yeong-Ja to the special quarters for the concubine instead of the regular ones, his inner wolf insisted to have her as close as possible - and if sharing a bed wasn’t an option yet it had to be the room right next door.
Yeong-Ja still didn’t know how to properly act around the emperor. He was sweet towards her during the day and made sure every wish she could possibly have was fulfilled as fast as possible but he never called her for the purpose she was brought into the palace.
At night she would lie awake in the large bed, staring up at the ceiling, which she barely saw with the small night light on the stand next to the bed. At first Yeong-Ja wasn’t able to sleep because she constantly stayed on edge, expecting to be called for her duty at any moment. Though when it didn’t happen her thoughts started to tear her apart from the inside. She couldn’t understand why San never came to her at night, why he always kept his distance even when they met.
Yeong-Ja couldn’t possibly know how much he suffered from not being close to her. His wolf rioted every chance possible - especially at night. A time where he wanted to take his mate and nothing else.
San writhed in pain, trying to keep his cool. Yet the hard on he sported in his loose pants throbbed painfully. No amount of masturbating helped him and it slowly but surely drove him insane.
‘Go to her.’ His wolf whispered, the sly smirk prominent in his voice. ‘She’ll take care of us.’
“No”, San grunted breathlessly. He pushed himself up and walked over to the door. San stood in front of it, his whole body trembling as he fought with himself. It took all of his will power to go through the other door.
He walked up to the concubine quarters. San needed a release and he couldn’t care less about who he had to fuck for that. As long as it meant he wouldn’t harm Yeong-Ja.
The woman struggled to fall asleep again. Therefore she decided to go for a short walk. She followed the wooden path to the centre of the palace, where she found a small koi pond and some greenery. Yeong-Ja sat down on the stairs that led down to the pond and stared at the water. The light of the flames from the lanterns around her reflected on the surface, almost dancing to a melody she wasn’t able to hear.
When she heard the sudden movements to her right, she cowered behind the handrail, hoping to stay hidden from whoever walked past in the middle of the night.
San pushed the concubine towards the special quarters since he couldn’t use the bedroom anymore. He got impatient with her stumbling and irritated with his wolf wanting to go somewhere else. Hopefully it would die down the second he stepped into the quarters with that concubine.
Yeong-Ja watched them silently, a lump forming inside her stomach when she recognised San with another woman. She wondered what this woman had that she didn’t have. Her shoulders hung down and she couldn’t contain the sigh that spilled past her lips. While being with the emperor had its perks, she still felt out of place. No matter how many tea ceremonies, breakfasts or evening walks she would have with him, Yeong-Ja still thought there had to be something wrong with her as she seemed to be the only concubine that wasn’t used for her original purpose.
Yeong-Ja winced when she heard the faint cries of pleasure. Swallowing the building lump in her throat she decided to go for a longer walk. There was no way she could just sit there and listen, nor could she go back to her chamber that was located right next to them.
On silent soles the young woman moved over the bridge of the pond and up the stairs towards the throne hall. She hoped the door behind the throne would be open, so she could sneak past. Even though she knew she’d be stopped at the main gate, she had a slimmer of hope within her.
“Miss Yeong-Ja?”
She squeaked and slightly jumped on the spot, her hand hovering above the handle for the sliding door to the throne hall. Yeong-Ja’s head turned almost mechanically to her left, where she saw Seonghwa.
He looked at her with concern written all over his face. Ever so carefully he stepped towards her, fearing she might bolt if he made too hasty movements. “Is everything alright?”
Yeong-Ja winced again, feeling incredibly exposed all of a sudden. “I just wanted to take a walk.”
“In the middle of the night?” Seonghwa finally reached her, placing a hand on her shoulder. He tilted his head, exploring her face in detail. His attention momentarily faltered when he heard the outcry from the special room. Understanding dawned on his features as his attention returned to the woman in front of him. “May I accompany you, Miss Yeong-Ja?”
Yeong-Ja nodded softly, a small smile playing over her features when she saw his awkward grin. “Can we leave the palace grounds for a while?” She asked hopefully, needing some distance to clear her thoughts.
“I’ll send for two guards to follow us”, Seonghwa confirmed and ushered her through the door. They crossed the throne room in silence and waited at the large entrance to the courtyard for two guards to join you.
For a while the silence continued as they walked through the streets of the upper town. Though as if Seonghwa was able to read her mind, he spoke up again: “Something is troubling you.”
Yeong-Ja sighed deeply, tilting her head back and looking up into the dark sky. “Is there something wrong with me?” She didn’t dare to look at Seonghwa, fearing his answer for some reason.
Seonghwa raised an eyebrow, observing her closely. “Why would there something be wrong with you?”
She shrugged with her shoulders, looking back down to the ground again. “It’s a little embarrassing to talk about this”, she confessed, her voice so soft nobody else but Seonghwa could hear her. “I just feel like the emperor doesn’t want me like he wants the other concubines. I’m not even sharing the same quarters with them.”
Seonghwa placed his hand on her shoulder again, chuckling softly. “I’m sure it is quite the opposite, dear.”
Yeong-Ja raised her head and looked at Seonghwa in confusion, a frown adorning her features while she tried to understand what the counsellor meant. “If the emperor wants me why wouldn’t he come to me at night?”
“That is something you should ask him yourself”, Seonghwa answered ominously, halting in his steps and turning around.
Yeong-Ja followed his example, still confused about what he was hinting at. She noticed him staring ahead and followed his gaze.
Her eyes widened in surprise when they locked with San’s, who stood breathing heavily in the middle of the street before them.
When she had left the palace, San had stopped mid-thrust. ‘She’s leaving!’ San’s eyes widened in panic when he realised his wolf was right and the scent of Yeong-Ja grew more distant. San growled almost animalistically as he pushed himself away from the concubine. “Go back to your chambers”, he ordered before he rushed out of the room.
He hurried to her bedroom first, needing to confirm what his instincts and sense of smell told him with his own two eyes. San momentarily stopped in front of her door, making himself presentable before he entered. His heartbeat accelerated when he didn’t see her inside the room.
‘Follow her!’ His wolf snarled and pulled San back.
The emperor barely snapped out of this, keeping control over his own body, as he ran towards the main gates. He ignored the questioning looks from the guards and only continued to run through the streets. San followed his nose for the most part but his eyes still frantically scanned his surroundings, making sure he wouldn’t miss her.
He stopped upon finding her - together with Seonghwa, who had a hand placed on her shoulder. San breathed heavily, his shoulders heaving from the sprint he just did. His eyes jumped between Yeong-Ja and Seonghwa, trying to figure out what was going on while his wolf wanted nothing but to rip Seonghwa’s hand off.
Seonghwa bowed slightly towards San and then turned back to Yeong-Ja. “I’ll leave you in his care now.” He smiled knowingly and squeezed her shoulder in reassurance before stepping away.
Yeong-Ja looked puzzled. Instead of finding answers to her questions, she only had more questions inside her head now. Once Seonghwa was out of her sight, her eyes landed on San. Uncertainty wafted off of her in waves and even San could sense it without his inner wolf telling him.
“Is everything alright?” He asked carefully, eyes exploring her expression. San feared she had attempted to escape and only got stopped by Seonghwa.
Yeong-Ja crossed her arms in front of her chest, slightly hugging her upper body even. “I just needed to take a walk.”
“In the middle of the night?”
“Yes!” She snapped, before looking away in embarrassment. “In the middle of the night”, she added more softly, “I needed to clear my head.”
San stepped closer - at least a little. “Is there something bothering you?” He tried to even his breathing, even though the fear inside of him made him want to gasp for air. His thoughts swirled around his head and the whining of his wolf to move closer didn’t help either to stay level headed.
Yeong-Ja watched him. She saw the fear in his eyes, saw him struggle and fight with himself but she didn’t understand why. She tightened the hold around her upper body. “Is there something wrong with me?”
“What?”
She was about to repeat herself, when San interrupted her: “No! Why would you think that? There is absolutely nothing wrong with you! You’re beautiful just the way you are!”
“And yet you always keep your distance.” Yeong-Ja mumbled to herself without knowing San’s heightened senses still picked up on her words.
“I don’t want to hurt you.” San groaned and pressed his face into his hands, before running them through his hair. “I keep my distance because I don’t want to frighten or hurt you.”
Yeong-Ja looked up at him through her eyelashes, gnawing on her lower lip as she contemplated her next question.
San’s wolf begged him to cross the distance and scoop her up in his arms; begged him to litter her in kisses but San stayed put. He wanted to wait; wanted to hear what she had to say.
“So could we have a tea ceremony where you won’t sit across the room and far away from me?” The wavering in her otherwise hopeful voice was heartbreaking.
“If that is what you wish for”, San agreed with a nod, never moving his eyes away from her. He didn’t dare to let her out of his sight for even a second. “Let us do that then. Tomorrow. After a good night’s rest.”
Yeong-Ja nodded shortly. She still felt uncertain around him but having him agree on being closer felt like a small step in the right direction. The young woman walked over to San - momentarily surprised he didn’t step back, but incredibly pleased he followed through with his words already. “Then we should head back again.”
“Yes”, San breathed out and walked next to you. Relief washed over his whole body once he realised she hadn’t tried running away and was even willing to go back with him. He definitely had to work harder to keep Yeong-Ja by his side - even if it meant torturing himself.
~
San sat in the middle of his private chamber. He had his eyes closed, trying to mentally prepare himself for the close proximity he was about to have with Yeong-Ja.
Behind him the tattoo artist prepared his utensils to create another mark on the emperor’s body. Hongjoong created every art piece on San’s skin and it hadn’t surprised him to be called again. He placed the small bowl with black ink to his right on a cloth of linen. Next to the bowl he kept the needles and a wooden piece he used as a hammer. To his left Hongjoong had placed a larger bowl of water and several towels.
“Everything has been prepared. We can start now.”
San raised one hand, halting the artist in his movements. “Please wait a moment. I’m expecting someone to join us.”
Hongjoong’s eyes widened as he stared at the back of the emperor’s head. So far each tattoo session has always been just them. He leaned back on his feet, placing his hands on his thighs to wait.
A servant announced their arrival, requesting to open the door and let Yeong-Ja inside.
Yeong-Ja played with the fingers of her hands behind her back. She stepped inside once the sliding door got opened enough for her to walk in. To her surprise the door got closed behind her right away. For a second it felt like a deja vu but when she turned her head and looked into the room, she noticed the two men sitting on the floor.
Just like during the first night San only wore some pants, revealing his bare chest and arms. He looked up at her with a nervous smile. “I know this isn’t like our usual meetings”, he explained when he saw her tilting her head to the side and eyeing Hongjoong behind him. “Will you still join me?”
The woman nodded hesitantly and crossed the room to sit in front of San. She leaned a little to the side to get a better look at the second man, who nearly got devoured by San’s broad shoulders.
“That’s Kim Hongjoong”, San told her, successfully getting her attention back on him. “He did all of my tattoos and will do another today.” San momentarily looked over his shoulder and told Hongjoong to start now.
At the mention of his tattoos Yeong-Ja’s eyes dropped to his chest, staring at the large wolf tattoo. She mused Hongjoong to be a great artist if he was able to create such detail of a wolf’s head with nothing but black ink. “Do they have a meaning or are you just having them for aesthetic reasons?”
For a while only the slapping of the wood against Hongjoong’s fingers filled the room. San focused on the slight pain pulsating through his body to keep his wolf in check. The close proximity to her made his wolf run up the walls but he couldn’t let it be. “Some have meaning, others don’t”, he breathed out, his jaw clenching and hand twitching as his wolf made another attempt to reach out to her.
Yeong-Ja watched him silently, noticing how he tensed up and struggled to hold this conversation.
Even Hongjoong noticed the unusual behaviour of the emperor. He knew for a fact San didn’t react to the pain of the needle, so seeing him this tense surprised the artist.
Yeong-Ja turned her attention back to the artist while San continued breathing purposefully. “How are you creating these?”
Hongjoong momentarily halted in his movement to look up at the woman. A proud grin flashed over his feature before he continued to work and started explaining the process to her.
While his inner wolf got jealous and wanted to bring the focus back to them, San felt some sort of relief that he could deal with his wolf for a moment as she listened intently to the process of tattoo making from Hongjoong.
After what only felt like seconds but probably had been much longer Yeong-Ja looked back at San. She noticed how he had already been watching her, making the heat rise up to her cheeks. Yeong-Ja quickly dismissed the feeling and cleared her throat. “May I see how he’s doing it?”
San’s eyes widened but he nodded nonetheless. He silently watched how she got on her knees and crawled past his left side. She stopped right next to him, letting only her head be behind his body to watch the artist creating the tattoo. Yeong-Ja stayed on all fours as she watched, surprised at the mess she saw on his back.
Hongjoong grabbed one of the towels and dunked it into the water bowl before wiping it over the fresh tattoo.
“Oh”, Yeong-Ja gasped when all the residue ink got wiped away and revealed what the artist had created so far. “How can you see with all the ink and blood being in the way?”
“Memory and constant cleaning.” Hongjoong picked the needle and piece of wood back up into his hands. He dunked the tip of the needle into the black ink and placed it on San’s skin before he slapped the wood against his fingers and pricked the skin in the process.
Yeong-Ja’s hand involuntarily grabbed onto San’s hand that had rested on his lap. She watched the tattoo artist with wide eyes, her hand squeezing San’s with every slap of the wooden piece.
San had gone completely still, his heart nearly beating out of his chest while his wolf rumbled in satisfaction. The little electric shock waves that flowed through his body were so much stronger than the pain from the needle. He swallowed harshly and turned his head to look at her. His eyes roamed over her features and a soft smile spread over his lips. San turned his attention down to her hand and before he could get second thoughts he placed his free hand on hers and started rubbing his thumb over her delicate skin.
Yeong-Ja leaned back on her feet again, eyes now on San’s face. “Does it hurt?” She noticed how he had relaxed soon after she held his hand, she also realised - with a slight panic arising - how this was the first time she actually had skin to skin contact with San.
“Not anymore”, he answered softly, continuing to stroke her hand with his thumb. “It’s reassuring even. To know I’ll soon have another mark on my skin that shows I’m fighting for my people.” San easily continued to speak about his tattoos and their meaning now, when she asked him to tell her more about them.
He would be laughing at himself, if it weren’t for the tattooing. San never expected that the simple contact with her skin was enough to keep his wolf somewhat satisfied and make him definitely easier to control. For weeks he battled inside of his mind with his wolf to take it slow. The constant suffering of being near her, having her scent and presence invade all of his senses without the possibility to act on it, turned San almost crazy. Yet, simple hand holding had been the solution all along.
“I’d like to have one as well”, Yeong-Ja announced suddenly, making both men freeze and stare at her with wide eyes.
Hongjoong was the first to break out of his stupor. “You want to have a tattoo?” He raised an eyebrow in question, looking at her and then at San before he looked back at her. “What would you want to get and where?”
Yeong-Ja’s eyes flicked to San, who still hadn’t moved, where she looked at the wolf tattoo shortly. Her eyes moved back up to San’s face, seeing how stunned he was with her statement.
San barely heard any of Hongjoong’s question as his heart hammered inside his chest and pumped his blood like a raging stream through his body.
Yeong-Ja bid down on her lower lip, feeling suddenly nervous with the way both men stared at her. “I’d like something that shows what I am. Something that shows I belong to the emperor.”
‘She wants us to mark her!’
San could feel his dick twitch from the image of marking her. The excitement his wolf felt washing over to himself as well. He had to fight to keep his thoughts clear, needing several minutes before he could even speak again. “You want my sigil on your body?”
Yeong-Ja nodded softly, still gnawing at her lower lip. She had thought of a wolf at first but the second San mentioned his sigil - the moon - she knew it was the perfect tattoo to show she belonged to him. “Would that be alright?” Yeong-Ja looked up at San through her eyelashes, nervous to get a rejection from him.
“Yes”, he breathed out, squeezing her hand gently. “Absolutely!” San turned his head to glance at Hongjoong. “Once you finish my tattoo, prepare everything to make another.”
Hongjoong agreed quietly and got back to work, finishing the tattoo soon after. He cleaned San’s back one last time before he stood up and called for a servant, requesting fresh towels and water. When he turned back around, his eyes landed on the woman. “Have you thought about where you want to get the tattoo?”
“Somewhere where I can see it, if I want to.” Yeong-Ja looked down at her body, wondering which part that would be. She lifted her arms and turned them, quickly deciding against them and looking further down her body. Her gaze momentarily flickered to San’s chest, thinking she could have the moon tattoo on her chest just like him, but she already squirmed at the thought of revealing her breasts. Finally Yeong-Ja’s gaze landed on her lap. “On my thigh?”
Hongjoong nodded. “That’s a good choice for a first tattoo placement. It will hurt less.” He started to prepare everything again, thanking the servants that brought the things he requested.
San squeezed her hand and brought her attention back to him. “Are you afraid?” He asked softly, tilting his head to one side.
“Not with your approval”, she answered him, smiling shyly and brushing a strand of hair behind her ear. “I was more afraid of your reaction”, she admitted. Again she glanced up at him, gauging his expression to her words.
San could only grin foolishly at her, his dimples appearing in his cheeks. He loved how she asked for his approval; loved how she wanted to do it with him in her mind. Before he could say anything of that though, Hongjoong requested Yeong-Ja to lay down on her side. San nearly whined out loud when she pulled her hand away from him to follow the request.
Yeong-Ja tried breathing naturally but her nervousness slowly got the best of her. She only followed the instructions of Hongjoong now, her head otherwise empty. She pulled the fabric of her dress to the side, revealing her right thigh.
Hongjoong then grabbed her by her hip gently and pulled her back to his lap, so that half her body leaned against him. “If this position is too uncomfortable we can get you a pillow to support your upper body.”
San immediately scrambled closer to them. He offered his own lap as a pillow and grinned giddily when Yeong-Ja accepted and placed her head on his lap. The emperor grabbed her right hand as well, pulling her arm up over her head so it wouldn’t be in the way for Hongjoong and so he could hold her hand again.
‘We should be marking her’, his wolf growled. He felt conflicted watching another man putting a mark on the body of his mate - even if it showed humans she belonged to the emperor - and having her so close to him. On one side he wanted to smother his mate in kisses and licks and on the other he wanted to tear his teeth into the artist for touching her. Or take her in front of him just to show his claim.
San groaned silently, debating with his wolf inside his mind. He unconsciously closed his eyes and clenched his jaw, too focused on controlling his wolf.
Yeong-Ja, who had been staring up at San for the whole time, noticed how he tensed up again. She squeezed his hand and smiled reassuringly when he opened his eyes and looked at her.
“Does it hurt?” San asked and raised her hand to his lips, kissing the back of it before he could even think about the action.
“Not anymore”, Yeong-Ja answered, grinning at him as she saw the twinkle of understanding in his eyes. She didn’t just say these words to copy his answer from before, she actually barely felt the way Hongjoong tattooed her since all her focus had been on San only, making her heart soar and stomach flutter. This was the closest she had been to him and she liked the feeling, hoping it would only deepen in the future.

“Can I see your tattoo again?” San turned on his side, looking up at Yeong-Ja’s sitting form. He grinned innocently as he looked through his bangs, appearing almost boy-ish.
Yeong-Ja giggled and leaned back on her hands, stretching her leg out. “You've been asking every day since I got it.” She closed her eyes and inhaled the fresh air surrounding her.
Ever since she got the tattoo, San kept her as close as possible. He still hadn’t taken her at night but during the day he became quite clingy, disregarding the looks from others when he stayed so close to her.
Though right now he didn’t have to worry about it, having taken Yeong-Ja out on a picnic to a nearby stream in the bordering forest. He told Seonghwa where they were headed and ordered the guards to stay behind. San wanted to be solely with her at least for a moment.
“And I’ll continue to ask every single day.”
Yeong-Ja opened her eyes and laughed softly. “I’m yours. Technically you wouldn’t even have to ask.” She licked over her lips and averted her eyes again, taking in her surroundings instead.
The sun filtered through the canopy of the trees above their heads, letting thin rays of light hit the ground around them. Some rays reached the water of the small stream, where the moving water reflected the light. Birds and cicadas chirped around them and somewhere up the stream even a frog croaked its mating song.
San pushed himself up and crawled over to Yeong-Ja, his body half hovering over hers now. He grabbed her chin with his forefinger and thumb and turned her head until she looked into his eyes again. “I will always ask for your consent.”
Yeong-Ja exhaled shakily and smiled up to him. “And I’ll always give you my consent.”
San grinned brightly and let go of her chin, his hand moving down to her leg instead. When he reached her ankle, he finally made contact with her skin. Ever so slowly San pushed his hand up along her leg now, moving the fabric of the dress to the side in the process. Once he revealed her bare thigh to his sight, he let his thumb brush over the dark tattoo.
‘We should mark her right next to it!’ His wolf tried to order San and growled in frustration when he didn’t bud. ‘She’s ready for us! Take her, mark her, breed her!’
San swallowed harshly, trying to ignore the pictures floating into his mind. He grabbed her thigh, his large hand squeezing it. His eyes slowly wandered back up to her face, seeing how she stared at him with bated breath.
‘She wants us! Wants us to breed her! Do something!’ His wolf roared in frustration when San only dropped down on her form, using her body as a pillow.
San pressed his ear against her chest, listening to her erratic heartbeat with a smirk playing over his lips. He sighed in content and closed his eyes. It took all his strength to keep his wolf in check and simply relaxing in her lap helped him gain the power to keep it that way.
Yeong-Ja shifted her weight to hold her up on one hand, so she could card her fingers through San’s dark locks. She tried to ignore how her heart hammered inside of her chest, making her emotions incredibly obvious to the emperor. She tried to ignore the flutter inside her stomach and the heat pooling in her lower regions when he squeezed her thigh. While a part of her wanted him to take her in the middle of the forest, she couldn’t bring herself to ask him.
Yeong-Ja wasn’t inexperienced - not that she’d tell anybody about it - but now that emotions had joined the situation, it created a pit in her stomach and made a mess out of her.
A twig snapped in the distance, alerting San and his wolf. He tensed up before pushing himself into a crouching position in front of Yeong-Ja, ready to protect her at any cost. San barely held the growl inside him when he heard steps coming closer.
“What’s wrong?” Yeong-Ja sat up as well, placing one hand on San’s back and peering over his shoulder.
“Someone’s coming”, San informed her with a low voice. He had his eyes still trained on the trees in front of him, listening intently to the steps. His nose twitched as he tried to use the sense of smell from his wolf, hoping to get a read on the person that was approaching.
“San?”
Yeong-Ja sat a little straighter than before, her mouth shaping an ‘o’ as she recognised the voice. She also noticed how San visibly relaxed and stood up, calling out for Seonghwa.
Soon enough the older man appeared between the trees with an awkward smile adorning his face. “I’m terribly sorry to interrupt”, he apologised and bowed shortly in front of the couple. “But I have to ask you to return to the palace.”
San frowned and crossed his arms in front of his chest. “Why?” Was the only word he said, slightly glaring at Seonghwa for even requesting something like that.
Seonghwa glanced towards Yeong-Ja, who slowly stood up too, readying herself to leave at any moment. He sighed deeply and returned his attention to his emperor. “Patrolling guards have stumbled on a camp of soldiers from the neighbouring region. They were able to overwhelm them without any casualties but now they insist on delivering a message to the emperor himself.”
“And that couldn’t wait?” San grunted in annoyance, but started to pack the few things he had brought along nonetheless.
“The prisoners make the court nervous.”
“And a nervous court is a bad court.” San sighed and rubbed a hand over his face. He didn’t want to leave Yeong-Ja’s side so soon. He turned his head and looked at her, contemplating his options. “Would you” - he paused, unsure about his own request - “stay with me?”
Yeong-Ja nodded and quickly stepped next to him, placing a hand on his upper arm. “If that’s what you wish.”
San thanked her quietly and grabbed her hand, leading her back to the palace and towards the throne room. His thumb rubbed slow circles to the back of her hand as his gaze was trained on Seonghwa’s back. He knew Seonghwa wouldn’t have interrupted them if it wasn’t necessary. He still cursed the older man for doing it though.
When they reached the throne room, Seonghwa stepped next to the throne as the head counsellor, looking down at the five soldiers that kneeled at the bottom of the steps towards the throne.
San glared at them as he walked up the steps and plopped down on the throne. He still held onto Yeong-Ja’s hand and used the chance to pull her right into his lap. There was no way he’d let her go now while being irritated already. San wrapped his arms around her body and silently nosed her neck, inhaling her scent with closed eyes to calm himself down again.
Yeong-Ja hadn’t expected to sit on the throne as well but she sensed how San needed her presence to keep his cool. She placed one hand on his chest, silently telling him she would be there for him.
“What is this message you have for me?” San opened his eyes again, glaring down at the five soldiers, who cowered away from his intense aura. Even some of his own guards shrunk down on themselves.
“It’s more of a warning”, one of the soldiers spoke up, raising his head to look up and smirk at San and Yeong-Ja. “You might wanna keep a closer look on your concubines.”
San snarled loudly and tightened his hold on Yeong-Ja, leaning forward a little as if he wanted to attack at any moment. “Be careful of your next words or I will rip your tongue out”, he threatened, baring his teeth in the process.
The soldier laughed maniacally. “I’m not surprised rebel groups are forming in your kingdom when the emperor himself is more concerned whether I insult a concubine or not.” He glared back up at San, a crazy look in his eyes and a smirk on his lips. “They say the dumber the concubine the better the sex. So this one must be incredibly stupid if you keep her that close.”
Yeong-Ja pressed her hand on San’s chest, keeping him in place. She turned her head to the soldier, raising an eyebrow to taunt him. “Oh really?”, she asked with a scoff. “In this case your stupidity outshines mine. You never intended to give the emperor a real warning, did you now? You only desired to insult him or get a rise out of him, isn’t that right? But here you are, on your knees, pathetic and incredibly stupid for revealing your association with rebel groups.”
Seonghwa stared at the woman with wide eyes. She was the first woman to speak during a court meeting of this magnitude. She was also the first to attend one but that's besides the fact she kept San in check, threw the insults right back at the enemies face and pointed out valuable information. He had also picked up on the rebel part but would have brought it up at a later point without the soldiers present.
Seonghwa turned his attention to San, noting how he barely held himself together. The only thing stopping him right now was Yeong-Ja’s hand on his chest. Otherwise he appeared to be absolutely livid.
“Pah”, the soldier barked, internally cursing himself for speaking about the rebel groups.
“And let me guess”, Yeong-Ja continued, ignoring how the soldier bared his teeth at her, “part of the rebel group is a former concubine that ran away. Why else would you bring it up?”
“A loud one, aren’t we? I’ll keep in mind to gag you when I fuck you and make you submit to me!”
In a flash San pushed Yeong-Ja from his lap and leaped down the stairs, crashing into the soldier, who had insulted her on several occasions. He punched his face over and over again, not stopping even when he heard the crack of bones.
Seonghwa rushed over to Yeong-Ja and placed his hand on her shoulder, forcing himself into her line of view. “You should leave now!”
Yeong-Ja stared up at him with an open mouth. She noted his stern voice and expression but something inside her insisted to stay put. “He asked me to stay by his side”, she tried to bargain with Seonghwa, knowing full well her weak voice did nothing to compel him.
“You do not want to see this”, Seonghwa only told her and grabbed her upper arm, pulling her up and away from the throne.
“What kind of monster is he?” One of the other soldiers screamed as he tried to move away.
Yeong-Ja looked over her shoulder upon the scream, seeing how San got tackled by several of his own guards, who tried to pull him away from the now lifeless body of the first soldier. She watched how San pushed all of the guards away and stood up, blood dripping from his fists. His eyes had turned turquoise as he fixed the soldier, who had screamed, with his stare. The last thing Yeong-Ja saw was San snarling, revealing larger canines than a human being should have, before she got pushed through the door behind the throne.
“What is happening to him?” She asked in concern and stared up at Seonghwa’s grim expression. Yeong-Ja stumbled along the wooden path, trying to keep up with the pace Seonghwa had.
“That’s something he’ll have to tell you himself.” Seonghwa opened the door to her quarters and gently pushed her inside. “Stay here and do not come out until I or a servant come for you!”
“What about San? Can I leave when he-?”
“No!” Seonghwa interrupted her immediately, his grip on her shoulder tightening. “In this state San can’t be near you! He wouldn’t want that!”
Before Yeong-Ja could ask more questions, Seonghwa let go of her and closed the door in front of her nose. She wrapped her arms around her upper body and slowly walked to the large bed while all of her thoughts were with San.
Seonghwa basically ran back to the throne hall, seeing the bloodbath in front of him. He ordered the guards around as he tried to get a better grip of the situation. So far he counted four dead bodies already and several injured guards - which were thankfully on the lighter side.
San stalked across the room to the remaining living soldier. He pushed himself through the guards that tried to hold him back, his hands that had already turned into claws reached out for the soldier and his turquoise eyes fixed him in the corner of the room. When San broke through his guards he landed on all fours but it didn’t stop him, instead he just continued to crawl forward. He growled menacingly and ignored the guards that grabbed onto his clothes and legs.
“They’re going to kill you! They will hunt you like the animal you are!”
San licked over his canines and pushed one last time forward, breaking free and reaching the soldier. He wrapped his hand around the soldier’s throat, his sharp claws digging into the skin and drawing blood. San leaned down to his face, leaving only a hair’s width between them. “They can try”, he growled before he snapped his back.
Even though the soldier was dead, San still ripped his throat out and clawed at his upper body. He had lost all of his control, letting his wolf overpower him.
‘Die, die, die, die!’ The wolf chanted over and over again as he relished in the disembodiment of the soldiers. A small part of him had been incredibly proud of his mate for handling the situation so quick-witted but it did nothing for the rage he felt. Nobody insulted his mate and would get out of that alive. He scanned the room, making sure none of the enemies had survived, grinning even when he saw their bodies - or what was left of them. He inhaled deeply and closed his eyes, the stench of blood infiltrated his nostril as well as the fact the scent of his mate was missing.
Seonghwa and seven other guards stormed towards San, grabbing him and placing huge chains around his arms and wrists. They struggled quite a bit to keep San in check but did it in the end, despite his writhing and twisting.
They brought him to his private quarters and chained San up against his own bed, making sure he wouldn’t be able to break free unless he regained his human consciousness again.
“Take the time to cool off again”, Seonghwa told him with a pained smile on his lips. “You did what you had to. We’ll clean up the mess and take care of the rebel groups. Their scent will be traceable.”
San growled at the mention of the rebel groups, pulling at his chains as well. ‘Anybody associated with these soldiers has to die!’
Seonghwa sighed deeply and rubbed a hand over his face. He only hoped San would regain control again sooner than later. He didn’t want to imagine the consequences otherwise.
Yeong-Ja sat up on the bed as she heard the commotion outside her room. She scooted to the edge and listened with bated breath, hearing some muffled words being spoken as well as the rattling of chains. The woman swallowed the lump forming in her throat and stood up, walking to the door that connected her room with San’s. One of her hands clutched the turquoise pendant hanging around her neck while the other hovered above the door, trembling from the nervousness running through her body.
A pitiful whimper from the other side of the door, settled her decision and she pulled the sliding door open. Yeong-Ja glanced into the darkened room, her breath catching in her throat when her eyes connected with the turquoise glowing ones from San.
He whimpered again, trying to move one hand in a weak attempt to reach for her. “Yeong-Ja”, he rasped before he wetted his lips with his tongue.
Yeong-Ja carefully stepped closer to the bed, both hands now clutching the pendant while her eyes took in every detail of the scene before her.
San laid splayed across the mattress, his upper body slightly hoisted up by the dozens of pillows behind his back. His arms were pulled to the side by heavy looking chains that wrapped around them up to his elbow. His fingers, which appeared more like claws, had blood slowly drying on them. Same with his clothes that got covered in blood stains and started to dry up. San had blood smeared over his lower face as well, the dark liquid a stark contrast to his smooth skin and his glowing eyes.
“San?” She asked hesitantly, halting at the end of the bed. Concern was written all over her features and it only deepened when he whimpered again. Yeong-Ja stared at him, a knot forming in her chest from the helplessness that suddenly arose inside of her. She wanted to help him, be there for him, but she didn’t know how.
A loud crack rang through the room and San broke free in the blink of an eye. He grabbed Yeong-Ja by the waist and slammed her down on the mattress, caging her underneath his body. He leaned down and nosed along her neck, inhaling deeply her intoxicating scent. “Our mate”, he rumbled and pressed his pelvis against her core.
The way San easily threw her onto the bed, knocked Yeong-Ja’s breath out of her lungs. The heat and throbbing inside her lower regions built up tenfold out of nowhere, leaving her incredibly aroused.
“We’ll take good care of our mate,” he breathed against the sensitive part of her neck, gently nibbling the skin even, “we’ll make her feel full with our cock, make her full of our cum until she’ll carry our pups.” He spoke more to himself than to her, too consumed by his own hunger and lust.
Yeong-Ja mewled softly underneath him when he ripped her clothes off, leaving her in a few shredded pieces of fabric but otherwise bare for his eyes. She wanted to hide from his intense gaze but stopped upon hearing him growl. Instead she raised her hands above her head, intertwining her fingers even, to show she wouldn’t hide a single part of her body from his sight.
He growled almost impatiently as he grabbed her by the hips - the chains around his arms clanged loudly with each movement. With ease he lifted her body and turned her around so she was on all fours. He tore the fabric of his pants open while he pushed Yeong-Ja’s upper body into the mattress, presenting her ass nicely for him.
Yeong-Ja gasped for air when he thrusted into her with one swift motion. Her walls tightened around his shaft, squeezing him hard from the sudden intrusion. She arched her back, changing the angle slightly he’d fuck into her.
He grabbed her hair and held her down, pressing her into the mattress with one hand. Part of the cold chains rested on her back, adding to the intense feeling. The other grabbed onto her hip, keeping her body in place as he started to thrust into her. He snapped his hips so his pelvis hit her ass cheeks and created a loud slapping sound that reverberated through the whole room. He growled with each thrust, gaining strength from the increasing moans that turned higher in pitch with every snap of his hips.
Yeong-Ja cried out in pleasure, feeling her insides tingle in pleasure. Every fibre of her body reacted to him and sent her over the edge. If he hadn’t held her hip with a vice-like grip, she would have collapsed on the mattress. She barely caught her own breath when he used his strength again. She whined over the loss of his dick from her throbbing hole but yelped when he turned her back around and slammed her back into the mattress once more.
His claws ran over her skin, leaving thin red lines along their path. He moved them from her neck over her chest and down her sides until he stopped at her hips. His eyes landed on the moon tattoo on her thigh, grinning wickedly as he dropped down and licked over the dark ink. “Our mate. We’re marking her for good this time.” He nibbled around her tattoo, licking and kissing it in his way as well. Until he found a spot close to her core.
Yeong-Ja arched her back and screamed out when San bit down on her thigh, together with plunging two fingers into her hole at the same time. The pain and pleasure battled inside of her for the prominent feeling as San’s large canines stayed inside her flesh while he started to fuck his fingers into her at a brutal pace.
Only after he felt satisfied, he pulled away from the bite mark, rumbling pleased to see his own mark on her skin. He leaned down and licked over the tender wound, sealing it with his saliva. “You’re such a good mate for us. So perfect. Taking everything so well.”
With one last kiss on the bite mark he moved to her centre, brushing his lips over her sensitive nub and teasing her folds with a few licks. All while he still pounded his fingers into her relentlessly. He only slowed down his movements to add his tongue to the mixture, pushing it along his fingers into her hole. His nose nudged into her nub during the process, making her mewl and whine in pleasure.
As her high built up yet again, Yeong-Ja wanted to clutch her legs together but his broad shoulders and a tight grip on her thigh prevented her from doing so. She had to endure the onslaught of pleasure to her clit and folds, being toppled over the edge when he added a third finger to push into her. Yeong-Ja’s whole body trembled and was covered in a thin sheen of sweat, her breathing erratic and her mind wrapped in a cotton-like bliss.
He lapped at her essence, slurping up every last drop, before he pushed himself up and ripped the rest of his own pants and shirt away. He tore at the chains as well, getting rid of them and finally being just as bare as her. His dick slapped against his toned stomach, thick and throbbing, with droplets of precum oozing out of its tip. He leaned back down again and rolled his hips against her core, lathering his shaft with her juices and wetting it again before he pushed himself inside of her.
Yeong-Ja didn’t get a warning, nor was she prepared for what was to come. Her legs got pushed to her chest, where he wrapped his arms around to hold them secure while he rammed his dick into her tight hole. The drag along her walls had her thoughts spiralling and her high building rapidly again. Yeong-Ja grabbed onto the sheets of the bed, needing something to ground herself.
“Such a good mate”, he rumbled, accentuating each word with a harsh thrust, “taking us so well. Feeling so good around our cock. Our mate is the only one we need, only one we want.” He pushed into her, getting more and more aggressive since her moans spurred him on. “Need to breed her. Need pups. Need her full of our cum.”
When he let go of her legs, they fell almost limply back on the mattress, spread wide so he could still fuck into her. He grabbed onto her sides, his claws slightly digging into her skin as he continued to push into her. He grunted and growled, hitting the soft spot inside her.
Yeong-Ja cried out in pleasure, writhing underneath him as she couldn’t control her own body anymore. She grabbed onto her hair with one hand, moaning obscenely loud. Her senses zoned in on the connection between their bodies and with one hard thrust she came undone once more.
He stilled his movements, having his dick pushed inside of her core as far as possible. He felt how the base engorged, forming the knot that would prevent any of his seed spilling out. He kept his position, leaning on his elbows and staring down at the connection. He could see how her entrance got spread wide from the building knot, which was enough to make him spill inside of her. His dick twitched and shot rope after rope of white hot cum into her, painting her insides white and filling her up to the brim.
“So good. Taking it all. Our mate will be round and plump with our pups.” He rumbled in satisfaction, watching how her lower stomach slightly expanded from the amount of cum he shot into her.
Even after he was done, he stayed in place - the knot wouldn’t reduce in its size anytime soon. He tore his glowing eyes away from their connected body parts, letting them wander over her body and up to her face. Out of the corner of the eye he noticed something around her neck.
Yeong-Ja winced slightly when he shifted his weight and reached out to carefully pull at her necklace until he had the turquoise pendant resting in his palm. She watched how the glow in his eyes slowly died down and his warm brown eyes returned again.
San’s gaze flicked from the pendant up to her face, confusion spreading over his features since his memory appeared a little hazy. “Yeong-Ja?” His voice was soft with a hint of worry lacing it. When she only smiled weakly - still too out of it from multiple orgasms - concern replaced San’s confusion. He wanted to push himself up when both of them winced, making him look down at his body again. San scoffed and shook his head. “Can’t believe my wolf fucked you before I did”, he grumbled, hiding his face behind his dark bangs.
“Your wolf?” She asked quietly, her voice hoarse from the constant moans. Yeong-Ja raised one hand to cup his cheek, lifting his head until San looked at her again. She rubbed her thumb over his cheek bone and smiled softly at him, even brushing his bangs out of his eyes.
San sighed and closed his eyes for a moment, gathering his thoughts. “I’m not entirely human”, he mumbled, swallowing harshly in fear of her reaction. “I am part wolf.” He noticed how her gaze dropped down to his tattoo, making him grin slyly. San turned his head from side to side and looked around, noting the broken headrest of the bed and the chains discarded on the mattress to his sides. He slowly gained scenes of his memory back, putting the pieces together to get a whole picture. “I’m sorry”, he whispered and his head dropped down again.
“Why are you apologising?” Yeong-Ja got up on her elbows, ignoring the sting between her legs from the movement. “You have nothing to be sorry about!”
San shook his head. “I wanted to ease you into this mess since it’s a lot to take. I understand if you’re afraid of me now and want to keep your distance. I’m deeply sorry for losing control over my wolf and letting him use you like that.” To his surprise he heard Yeong-Ja chuckle, so he looked back up at her with wide eyes.
“It is a lot to take in”, she agreed with a twinkle in her eyes, “but it doesn’t mean I can’t take it. The moment I requested the tattoo was the moment I decided to be in this for the long run. You don’t have to hide from me, don’t have to keep any secrets. I’m yours. Wholeheartedly.”
San cursed under his breath as he grabbed Yeong-Ja by the neck and pressed his lips against hers. He hummed into the kiss, barely suppressing the grin building from the pleased rumbles his wolf made. San licked over her lips, asking for entrance and deepening the kiss when she gave it to him. He slowly started to roll his hips as well, feeling his hard on buried so snuggly inside of her.
Yeong-Ja arched her back, her eyes rolling to the back of her head. While San’s movements were a lot softer they were precise and hit her insides just right.
San took his sweet time with her, adoring every second of it. For once he could enjoy the pleasure of life without his wolf commenting on everything he did. For once he felt like he became one - not just with himself but with another person as well, a person so special in her own unique way. And he would show her his gratitude every single day for the rest of his life.

January 2024 reading and Reviews by Maia Kobabe
I post my reviews throughout the month on Storygraph and Goodreads, and do roundups here and on patreon. Reviews below the cut.
Electric Bones volume 1 by Hazel and Bell
Lucian is the son of a minor nobleman and the CEO of the galaxy's biggest AI company, but he's not so rich that he can't get in trouble. After being fired as a programmer from Echo Station he joined a startup with a couple friends and is now fishing for funding at an elite tech expo on board an expensive and exclusive space vessel. There he sees someone he thinks he recognizes- Ezra, a grey robot, an fully sentient AI who worked on Echo Station as a researcher and partially cost Lucian his job. So why is Ezra now working on the space vessel as an escort? Unless it's not Ezra, but just a look-alike robot model? These questions drag Lucian into the beginnings of tangled web of intrigue which include kidnapping, AI-hacking, and murder. I've been reading this story online as a webcomic for years; you can still read all of volume one here: https://electricbonescomic.com/index.... But last year I also backed the kickstarter, and just sat down to re-read the whole story in print form, including a sexy little bonus comic. I love these characters, I love the rich colors, the lovely sense of flow and design of the pages. I can't wait for volume two!
The Fox Maidens by Robin Ha
Action packed and exciting, this family drama is full of unexpected twists and turns. I loved the focus on female characters: passionate Kai, whose love of martial arts and sense of justice cannot be contained by the normal rules of Joseon society; her mother, Meorhu, a fragile woman with a surprising past; Sura, a thief turned mercenary; and the Gumiho herself, the deadly but alluring fox spirit who impacts the lives of all the others with her magic and charisma. The art is rich with historical details, beautiful nature scenes, and fast paced fight scenes. Lovers of ghost stories, kdramas, and queer re-tellings of fairy tales will find much to enjoy here. I was lucky enough to read an advanced copy of this book! Pre-order it now, or look for it in bookstores in mid-February 2024.
A Nobleman’s Guide to Seducing a Scoundrel by KJ Charles read by Martyn Swain
What a delightful return to Romney marsh! This book picks up 13 years after the dramatic conclusion of the previous installment. Luke Doomsday is now a secretary, looking for a new position in a large house were he can keep books and solve his master's problems. Rufus, the recently minted Earl of Oxney, formerly a major in the army and son of a draper, has problems. For one, he never expected to inherit and his uncle is doing everything he can to prove Rufus illegitimate in court. For another, the previous Earl of Oxney was a selfish old bastard who let the estates fall into terrible disrepair, while Rufus' timid cousin kept poor account of the estate's money in a chicken scratch handwriting. Rufus struggles to read at the best of times, and he can barely make sense of his newly inherited account books. When Luke shows up on his door, it feels like a godsend. The men are immediately attracted to each other, though both have reason to be wary. And Luke, in seems, may have come to Stone Manor looking for more than a job. This series is such a fun mix of spicy romance, action, mystery, and danger. I'm really enjoying the setting and time period, which is just after the end of the Napoleonic wars. I really hope there will be more books to come!
Translation State by Ann Leckie
No one is doing it like Ann Leckie! This sci-fi novel uses six different pronoun sets (actually kind of seven, except one is the same set just used culturally very differently by different groups of people). It’s fantastic. We’ve got they/them, e/em/eir, sie/hir, it/its, he/him, she/her, and she/her again except used as a universal pronoun regardless of gender (which works great inside the Radch Empire and badly outside of it). I'm on the fence about whether this book can be read as a stand alone, or if it would only really make sense after having read at the Imperial Radch trilogy and Providence. I suppose it depends on what level of baffling alien customs and politics you are willing to tolerate. This book opens with Enae attending hir grandmaman's funeral, only to learn that the seemingly wealthy old woman had sold her entire estate to a stranger before her death. For the first time in her life, Enae leaves home with a Foreign Affairs job: to see out a fugitive who left Presger space some 200 years prior. Enae isn't expecting to succeed, but sie gives it hir best shot- and in doing so completely upends the lives of a widening circle of bystanders including Reet, a man of unknown parentage, and Qven, a juvenile Presger. This book finally begins to explain this inhuman and terrifying species, and the reason why the Presger-Radachii Treaty defines the rules of so much of this universe. I deeply enjoyed this installment; it makes me want to go back and re-read the original trilogy.
Brooms by Jasmine Walls and Teo Duvall
Set in an alternate 1930s, Mississippi, this story follows a group of friends and found family who have to hide their magic from the restrictive and racist government. They survive at the margins, but they don't let the fear of prosecution stop them from doing what they love: racing together as a team. Deep in the woods seers and witches host carnival like events where racers on brooms compete for prize money and glory. Each of them has reasons why they need to win; lives and futures depend on it. This book is deeply queer with a diverse and magical cast. If you're looking for historical fiction where the trans and lesbian brown witches win, this one's for you.
Boys Weekend by Mattie Lubchansky
Sammie is a recently out nonbinary transfemm but their college friend group has not picked up on that fact yet. When Sammie is invited to be the "best man" at their friend Adam's wedding and attend a bachelor weekend at a high-tech, no-laws resort built on top of the Pacific Garbage Patch they decide to go in stealth mode. The resort is a pyramid scheme mutated with a strip club, business conference, all you can drink brunch bar, pro-gamer, most-dangerous-game corporate nightmare. Also, the waters around it are infested with terrifying flesh-eating monsters and someone is trying to raise an eldritch god. It takes every bit of queer resistance Sammie possesses to survive this bleak, hilarious, and surprisingly moving tale. In both their fiction and nonfiction comics, Lubchansky continues to hold up the black mirror to our own dystopian times.
Belle of the Ball by Mari Costa
A very queer high school rom-com comic with a satisfying message about growing into yourself and seeing others truly for who they are. It opens with a love triangle, but subverts that form into a more complicated shape by the end of the tale. Strong character designs and very effective limited color palette.
The Moth Keeper by K. O’Neill
In a desert village, a group of folks choose to live a nocturnal life to keep the moon company, and to care for a small group of magical moths, the only creatures who can pollinate a magical tree which helps sustain the whole ecosystem. One youngster, Anya, volunteers for the important but lonely job of Moth Keeper. She yearns to be of service to others, and feels she must earn her place in the village. In reality, help and friendship are only an ask away, and in this space everyone is cared for. This is a very beautifully illustrated and brief tale of responsibility, community, and resilience.
Feeding Ghosts by Tessa Hulls
What an accomplishment! I savored every page of Feeding Ghosts, absolutely floored by the labor and courage that went into the writing of this book. The inking is gorgeous, the history is clear, digestible, and devastating. This book threads the line between honesty and compassion in a way that I appreciate so much in any memoir, but especially one dealing with family. Hulls lays out the story of three generations of women starting with her grandmother, Sun Yi, a Shanghai journalist who faced intense persecution during the rise of Communism in China, who penned a popular and scandalous memoir and then suffered a mental breakdown. This left her only daughter, Rose, a student at an elite boarding school with no parental figures and no other family to lean on. Eventually Rose earned a scholarship to an American university and in the end moved her mother into her California home. Sun Yi haunted that home during the author's own childhood. The unexamined trauma and codependency of Sun Yi and Rose drove the author to the extreme edges of the Earth, seeking freedom from their ghosts. But in the end, she stopped running from her family history and turned, instead, to face it. Shelve this book with Maus, Fun Home, Persepolis and The Best We Could Do.
I Keep My Exoskeletons To Myself by Marisa Crane read by Bailey Carr
I really struggled with this book. I almost DNFed at 25%. Ultimately, I did finish it, and I am glad I did because I think the final act was my favorite part of the story. However, I think the title and cover set me up with expectations of what this book would be which were very different than what the book actually delivered. This is not science fiction- despite the fact it was nominated in the science fiction category in the Goodreads Choice Awards. It is only barely speculative. This is a book about grief, depression, and parenting a baby and then a young child as a single mom struggling with loss and borderline alcoholism. There were passages of the book which struck hard, individual observations and lines which rang like bells. There is also nearly no plot and I was frustrated by the lack of world building. I wanted to know more about the laws governing extra shadows- were Shadesters allowed to vote, hold passports, travel across state lines? Had anyone experimented with the removal of Shadows? When and how did cameras get installed in apparently every home in American, and how did the government hire and pay for a workforce of seemingly 1:1 surveillance agents to citizens? Also, how on earth did Kris manage to pay for a whole apartment on a single salary working a call center job, especially when as a Shadester she had to pay extra taxes? I understand that this is literary fiction, and these questions are obviously not the ones the book was interested in answering. But it felt strange to me that a book so focused on parenting would not include a single passage about struggling to pay for or arrange childcare. The "pop quizzes" that break up the text did not work well in audio, and did not add anything to my experience of this book. Ultimately, I would only recommend this novel to a vary narrow audience of readers who enjoy lit fic, and are willing to spend a lot of time in the POV of a character teetering on the edge of a mental breakdown through much of the story.
Atana and The Firebird by Vivian Zhou
Atana is a mermaid, but she was banished from her home to live alone on island for a reason she doesn't understand. One night a curious young firebird leaves her flock in space to come down and visit Earth, and she convinces Atana to go an adventure. They are soon pursed by magic hunters, but they also make friends, and end up as invited guests in the Witch Queen's palace. She makes them welcome in her massive library and gardens, but she also has ulterior motives. This is a fast paced story of magic, friendship, and young people slowly learning about the forces larger than themselves that shape their world and their lives. I really enjoyed the art, it has a very active, energetic line which serves the action scenes particularly well. I can tell the author came from an animation background! I am glad that the ending set up potential future installments in this world.
Portrait of a Body by Julie Delporte
I really loved the colored pencil illustrations of this book, especially the botanical drawings, and the kind of abstract relation of the text and images. I thought the drawings paired extremely well with the hand lettering even if at times I struggled with some of the cursive capitals. This is a candid memoir of recovering from sexual assault and a dysfunctional relationship to ones body and sexuality, of stepping into queerness and self-acceptance. I couldn't really relate to the author's journey, but I appreciated the honestly and thoughtfulness with which the more challenging themes were handled.
Fool’s Fate by Robin Hobb read by Nick Taylor
This book, and this series, has earned Robin Hobb a permanent place in my list of favorite authors. This story goes so hard, weaving together threads that are 9 volumes and 30 plus years of in-story history in the making. The final confrontations, reunions, and farewells at the end of this story were hard earned and so well written. This very much felt like it could have been a final volume of the Realm of Elderlings series, but I know that there are 7 more books to come and I can't wait to see what else this series has in store for me!
System Collapse by Martha Wells read by Kevin R Free
This book picks up right after the end of the previous volume and I had, unfortunately, completely forgotten most of the previous plot. Once I got myself oriented I still had a great time with it. Wow, I just love watching Murderbot learn and grow and solve problems in unique and interesting ways! I kind of want to go back and re-listen to the whole series.
The Chromatic Fantasy by H.A.
This comic blew me away. One of the most beautiful, strange, artistically ambitious and deeply trans books I've read in a while. Aesthetically, its as rich as a stained glass window or illuminated manuscript. Its narrative is psychedelic but emotionally it rings so tender and true. The story opens with Jules, a transman trapped in a nunnery who accepts a deal with a devil who promises to help him live as a man. Possessed and impervious to physical harm, Jules turns to a life of debauchery and crime. Then he meets another trans criminal, the poetic thief and thespian Casper, and they begin to fall for each other. They see each other as no one else ever has, they validate and treasure one another, but Jules' devil is a jealous master. The devil would rather see Jules burn than thrive. This is one of those books that made me want to draw, made me want to write, made me want to be bolder, weirder, freer, wilder in my story telling. An instant favorite, I expect I'll return to this over and over.
Mall Goth by Kate Leth
Liv's parents are on the verge of divorce; they've just moved to a new town and Liv will be starting at a new high school. At her last school, Liv was bullied for being openly queer and an unapologetic mall goth, and she is understandably hesitant to accept friendship overtures at the new school. However, a supportive male English teacher and a fellow goth gamer boy start to make Liv feel welcome. The goth introduces her to an MMORPG and the English teacher praises her essays and gives her Lolita. Both of them start regularly DMing Liv late into the night, more than is appropriate for the relationships they have. This book is in large part about a teen navigating confusing advances and how and when to disclose things that make her uncomfortable but feel hard to speak about or define. I thought that aspect of the story was handled very well. Some of the pacing in the friendship plot lines surrounding it felt a bit rushed, a few sections underdeveloped, but ultimately I think this book tackled an important issue not often seen in YA comics. It is also steeped in early 2000s Hot Topic/emo music/pop culture references- if you were there, you'll know.
What’s Wrong? Personal Histories of Chronic Pain and Bad Medicine by Erin Williams
Williams illuminates, through memoir, interviews, and mixed media illustrations the extreme failures of the US healthcare system to address chronic pain. These failures are especially common for patients of color, patients who struggle with addictions, patients who are queer or survivors of assault and trauma. If you had any illusions that the systems of medical care are working in this country, shed them now. This book is half cathartic, half infuriating to read. I really appreciated the honesty and vulnerability of the interviewees and the trans and nonbinary inclusiveness of the language surrounding pain tied to the reproductive system.

Why These Imperfect Korean ‘Moon Jars’ Sell for Millions
Old, round, imperfect and beautiful — that’s how fans of Korean art describe the moon jar, or “dalhangari.”
These unassuming, plain white pots have entranced everyone from rapper RM, of K-pop sensation BTS, to philosopher Alain de Botton.
The former director of London’s Victoria and Albert Museum, Beth McKillop, has called the moon jar an “icon of Korean identity.” And if price is any indicator of popularity, one recently sold for over $4.5 million at a Christie’s auction.
This month, a rare example from the late 17th or early 18th century will go on sale at Sotheby’s in New York, where it’s expected to fetch more than $3 million.
“A large moon jar has always been expensive, but I think the big uptick in prices and value is… because their appeal is now global,” said Angela McAteer, Sotheby’s international head of Chinese art for the Americas and Europe, over video call. “You’ve got an international cohort of bidders competing for them, so it’s gone beyond the traditional connoisseur collecting community of Korean art.”
Tumblr media
Huge price tags also result from the jars’ rarity. Although made for over a century in the royal kilns of Korea’s last kingdom, the Joseon dynasty, few are thought to exist today. Estimates for the number of larger ones (those more than 40 centimeters, or 15.7 inches, tall and wide) that have survived over the years range from 12 to 30.
Having passed through auction houses and antique dealers across the world, several of these are now in the collections of institutions like the British Museum and Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts, as well as in the hands of private collectors.
‘Owning a piece of happiness’
The first moon jars were created in the royal kilns in Gwangju (a city just outside Seoul, not the larger southern city of the same name) from 1650 to 1750. They were made from pure white porcelain and kaolin clay, and, following the neo-Confucian fashions of their day, the pots reflected values such as propriety, humility, frugality and purity. They were likely used at court and in upper-class homes as containers for food and liquids, or as decorative vessels.
In the mid-20th century, moon jars began gaining international appreciation thanks to influential admirers such as Japanese folk crafts scholar Yanagi Soetsu and British potter Bernard Leach, who bought one from a Seoul antique store in 1935. Leach once said that having a moon jar was like “owning a piece of happiness,” and would later give his to fellow potter Lucie Rie for safekeeping during World War II. It stayed in her studio until her death and was later acquired by the British Museum.
Charlotte Horlyck, lecturer in Korean Art History at the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies, wrote in the Art Bulletin journal that after World War II the moon jar “caught the attention of an early generation of postcolonial Korean artists and scholars who sought to restore Korean art history and national identity,” as the pieces “resonated with the visual language of international modernism and minimalism of the mid-20th century while remaining a distinctly Korean work of art.”
The moon jar’s allure
When Sotheby’s announced its forthcoming sale, the auction house described its 44-centimeter (17.3-inch) moon jar as an object that inspired, astounded and soothed those who “stand in its presence.” It’s a funny thing to say about a pot, to speak as if it’s alive, but the jars’ visceral, emotional impact on people is something that comes up time and time again in the literature.
Tumblr media
Choi Sunu, a former director of the National Museum of Korea, has described the museum’s moon jars as being like companions, or muses that have inspired his writing and stirred his creativity. Bernard Leach admired the pots for their “natural unselfconsciousness.” In 2012, South Korea’s then-Unification Minister Yu Woo-ik used the pot as a metaphor symbolizing a reunified Korean peninsula (moon jars are created in two hemispherical pieces and joined in the middle).
More recently the rapper RM, of K-pop group BTS, posted a picture of himself hugging a modern-day moon jar on Twitter, telling fans that the pots made him feel calm.
“It’s hard for someone to really comprehend how a pot can make you feel that way,” said McAteer. “It has this real meditative presence. If you’ve sat in front of a great (painting by US artist, Mark) Rothko and you feel this kind of palpable energy emanate from it, and you could sit for hours and just feel something in its presence — the moon jar has that too.”
“The more you look at it, the more there is to see. It looks different from every angle,” she added. “We had real issues with the photography and the catalog because it looks like a different piece every time you rotate it, or you change the lighting. The surface is just alive, you know.”
“You can see how the glaze coalesces; you see these spontaneous bursts of this blush color that’s happening in the firing. You can lose yourself in its surface.”
Modern masters
Modern Korean potters have been inspired by the jars, and a number have come up with their own homages. Ceramist Kim Syyong covers his pots with a black glaze, while Yun Ju Cheol’s versions look spikier like a pufferfish and Choi Bo Ram’s unvarnished, textured blue vases have a denim-like quality.
Others, like Kwon Dae Sup, have looked to closely recreate the process used by the potters of yore. The 71-year-old ceramist produces unadorned white jars and allows for all the beautiful imperfections produced to shine through. He works out of a studio in Gwangju, where the royal kilns that produced moon jars were once located.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There’s a great deal of preparation that goes into making a moon jar traditionally. It’s labor-intensive: washing, sifting impurities from the clay, kneading and rolling it to remove air bubbles, carrying around these large hunks, not to mention hand throwing the clay itself to that oversized bowl shape without collapsing, and the work keeping a pine wood fire burning for 24 hours while the pot hardens in the kiln. Kwon also built his own kiln to replicate the old process as closely as possible.
“I do this because it’s fun,” he said in a phone interview. “Every time I make something, it’s novel … The quality of the material is different every time. The conditions in which I make the pots is new every time.”
Kwon said he also feels an emotional connection to the moon jar. As a student he was so moved by a one he saw in a Korean antique store that he decided they would be his life’s work. “They feel alive,” he said.
In a 2019 book on his work by Axel Vervoodt Gallery the potter is quoted saying he tries to produce art that needs no addition or subtraction. “I wish to create work that has an imposing presence but harmonizes with its surroundings regardless of where and when it is displayed. It should give peace of mind and a sense of comfort to all who look at it.”

2023 End of Year Post - kdrama edition
Yes, we have a some of December left, and I want to check out Death's Game but whatever. I got time for this now and not sure if I will have later so here goes.
This is only going to cover kdramas that aired in 2023; if I watched it but it was made in a different year, it’s not on the list. This was an excellent kdrama year, the likes of which we hadn't had in a long time.
DRAMAS WATCHED
In order of liking from least to most as opposed to pure quality so pls don't come for me, fans of some popular dramas that are on my nope list. Also, I am including if I’ve seen enough to make up my mind; yes I realize that’s inaccurate, but that’s my list.
33. The Escape of the Seven - this is so aggressively stupid and mean that it feels like the makers are playing a practical joke seeing how much their audience will take. This has a season 2 coming, so the answer is a lot.
32. Behind Your Touch - the FL gets superpowers by touching people's and animals' butts. Yes, you read this right. Do I really need to add anything?
31. King the Land - yes, it was a hit. Yes, it stars popular actors. I HATED IT LIKE IT TOUCHED MY BUTT TO GET SUPERPOWERS!!! Plastic people in paint by the numbers story, with about as much genuineness or retability as a barbie aisle in walmart. I never expect much from Yoona so whatever, but to have LJH go from The Red Sleeve to this boggles the mind.
30. Mrs Durian - this is so dumb that I think I lost a few IQ points watching this, but its insanity becomes entertaining - I mean what kdrama can you name where a daughter in law declares her love and lust for her mother in law at a family dinner?
29. The Matchmakers - there is nothing offensive about this drama at all. But there is nothing in the least interesting either. If elevator music took drama shape, it would be this show.
28. Destined with You - sorry, Rowoon, I am still fond of you, but you are two for two in drama duds department this year. This is a drama where I loved ep 1, liked ep 2, was indifferent to 3 and...you get the point. Each ep was worse than the one before, and I bailed before I was dragged into a cosmic singularity.
27. Oasis - great first two episodes. Unfortunately it was not a two ep show. The performances are solid but the story is just not there - the effect is like a fancy chef making an amazing sauce to put on pig slop.
26. Boyhood - it's not you, it's me in action. I can see why people would like it but a 34-year old playing a high schooler in a Weak Hero Class 1 Slapstick Edition is no go for me.
25. Castaway Diva - it's so precious and kooky in the most annoying ways, with the most well-adjusted abused castaway in history. I like magic realism when done by Jorge Amado, but this ain't Amado.
24. Island - it had a good concept, good cast and fun visuals but the execution deserved one of ML's swords through the neck.
23. The Worst of Evil - if I wanted an American show, I'd watch one. Very solid performances though.
22. Song of the Bandits - period edition of what I said about The Worst of Evil.
21. Welcome to Samdalri - and goodbye to any hope of emotional involvement.
20. Joseon Attorney - I have yet to like a single sageuk centered around a profession and this was not an exception. I guess it could be worse but it also could have been so much better.
19. Twinkling Watermelon - everyone loved this drama. Everyone except for me. It's the kind of precious that sets my teeth on edge and I couldn't stand half the main characters we were supposed to root for. I guess I like my fruits to shine steadily.
18. Our Blooming Youth - probably the biggest disappointment on this list. This is not a bad drama by any means, but with that cast and that story (I loved the novel), I was hoping for a memorable sageuk not merely all right.
17. Vigilante - it has the emotional complexity and nuance of a punch to the throat but it gives us quasi-gay openly-murderous dudes going after psychos and Yoo Ji Tae holding feral Nam Joo Hyuk by his hoodie at his feet.
16. The Forbidden Marriage - expected nothing but it was a surprisingly enjoyable trifle of a costume drama that was also quite pretty.
15. Arthdal Chronicles: Sword of Aramun - a hot mess but such an entertaining epic one. And it gave us TWO Lee Jun Kis in period gear and who am I to cavil at the bounty of God?
14. The Story of Park's Marriage - it's a trifle, a souffle, so light it might blow away, but it keeps my attention and is so fun and sweet.
13. My Lovely Liar - a huge surprise, that manages to mix a murder mystery and a romcom, and shocked me by showing Hwang Minhyun can act.
12. Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938 - the original ToNT was my fave drama of its year and I did not think it needed a sequel. But this is not a sequel but more of a side-quel and is such a total delight with brotherly love, adventures, romance and hijinks. It's a joy.
11. Perfect Marriage Revenge - it's actually very hard to do a soap right but this slim 12 ep drama managed. So fun, so crazy, such a good ship!
10. My Lovely Boxer - not really about sports, but about two broken people finding salvation because of and in each other. Also, if you like age gap romances, this is delicious. Sort of loses steam by the end but c’est la vie.
9. The Secret Romantic Guesthouse - this was a sageuk that was not on my radar with a bunch of actors I was not familiar with but it took my heart away. A good plot that was perfectly paced, characters and ships I adored, a logical ending. This is one of the biggest positive surprises of the year for me.
8. Tell Me That You Love Me - a slice of life remake (sort of, it's more "inspired by") of my favorite jdrama of all time. It's not as good as the jdrama because nothing could be, but it's an aching lovely story with some incredible performances.
7. See You In My 19th Life - funny and romantic and haunting and hopeful and odd. This was one of my favorites of the year.
6. Alchemy of Souls: Light and Shadow - it's rare for me to like a (1) sequel (2) with FL actress change (3) that is a Hong Sisters drama. But this was such a gorgeous, surprisingly achy story of love and loss and love regained with some cool monster fighting in the middle. Between the two seasons, this is the first Hong Sisters' drama I enjoyed from beginning to end in well over a decade.
5. My Demon - so tropey (chaebols, supernaturals) but it proves that these tropes are popular for a reason. The chemistry is fire, the story is unpredictable and the whole thing is an addictive delight. A rare drama where I like each new ep more than the last one.
4. Goryeo Khitan War - an old school sageuk in every meaning of the term (no romance, no eye candy, lots of bearded men, battles and politics), this feels like watching an epic movie more than a drama. The vast cast all earns their place and the performances (mainly from character actors given a chance to shine) are incredible.
3. Call It Love - two very very damaged people finding love and healing with each other. This is a narrative very hard to do to my satisfaction but when it's done well, as here, there are few things that can hold a candle to it.
2. My Dearest - a masterpiece of cinematography, narrative, performances. This is an old-school epic romance in the best sense of the term. If it doesn't make you swoon or break your heart, there is something wrong with you. A story of two untraditional, strong-willed, flawed people who fall in love in the middle of the horrifying Qing invasion of Korea and have to deal with all that the world throws at them, this is a bona fide masterpiece.
1 - Moon in the Day - who knew my favorite kdrama of the year will star a store brand Domyoji from Extraordinary You and an actress I was never familiar with. But this part period/part modern fantasy tale of doomed cursed lovers is everything I knew I wanted and everything I didn't know I wanted but did. Two lovers where their love did not save them and in modern day it might not again, has got me obsessed the way I haven't been in years.
FAVORITE DRAMA
Moon in the Day - if there is such a thing as a drama made perfectly for me, this gorgeous, emotionally haunting, utterly romantic, twisty tale is it.
WORST DRAMA
The Escape of the Seven. This drama is proof that demons exist and not sexy ones like Song Kang but horrible nasty ones who delight in the torment this hot mess inflicted on its viewers.
FAVORITE MALE CHARACTER
Do Ha, Moon in the Day - a Silla general and a consummate killer who committed atrocities on the orders of his monster father and yearned to die for them, who found the meaning in life in loving his enemy but it did not make him better, a man so obsessed he literally was around for 1500 years of horrifying ghostly existence and still went "worth it" for a woman who killed him as long as he knew she loved him while she did it. He's intense and competent and beyond fucked up and has never had a normal day and I love him so so so very much from a safe distance.
Tumblr media
FAVORITE FEMALE CHARACTER
Gil Chae, My Dearest - she starts out as vain and spoiled but the horrors that break so many others bring out all her fierce survivor potential and she becomes such a force of nature - capable of incredible love but also sacrifice and strength and compassion.
Tumblr media
Runner Up: Shin Hye Sun's reincarnator in See You In My 19th Life - quirky, damaged, strong, so odd and so vulnerable at once.
Tumblr media
NEEDS TO BE MURDERED
There are a lot of characters who fit that category (King Injo in My Dearest? My God) but the crown belongs to So Ri Bu from Moon in the Day. You think you've seen abusive parents but until you've seen a man abuse his son his whole life and then continue for 1500 years after his death, you ain't seen nothing!
FAVORITE SHIP
The doomed by the narrative OTP of Moon in The Day. Only thing that's better than enemies to lovers is enemies while lovers and their impossible relationship where her killing him is a supreme act of love and his refusing to let go is so strong that he stays around for 1500 years watching her, helpless as she dies over and over again, is everything you ever want.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Runner up: Jang Hyun/Gil Chae, My Dearest. They are so strong and so damaged and it takes them so long to figure out what they feel and what the other person feels but their love and sacrifice and complexities are perfect.
Tumblr media
FAVORITE SECONDARY OTP
Kim Shi Yeol/Hong Joo, The Secret Romantic Guesthouse - an assassin bodyguard pretending to be a carefree scholar and a widow of the man he killed to protect his king (and whose life was destroyed as a result.) I enjoyed the main OTP of this drama but I was utterly and completely unhinged for the secondary couple.
Tumblr media
I'd have probably picked Rang and his mermaid from TotNT 1938 even over them, but they really were the main OTP of that drama.
Tumblr media
NOTP
King the Land couple seems like an easy target but honestly, they are both so terribly bland and antiseptic and marketing by committee, they kinda deserve each other. So I am gonna go with Destined with You, one half of which thinks supernaturally roofying someone into loving them is cute and the other half thinks dating one woman while wooing another is totally a-ok. Ugh.
FAVORITE SCENE
There is no competition for the scene in the slave market in My Dearest, where Jang Hyun finds Gil Chae - the way he screams and tries to clutch the hem of her skirt will live in my head forever.
Tumblr media
And the scene where he 'wins' that horrifying bet, or the scene where she finds him in a pile of bodies - they are as good also. Or when he fights off a squad to protect her even though he's sick. That whole drama is perfect.
Runner up: the scene of Do Ha executing Ri Ta's family, covered in blood, as she looks at him from the crowd in Moon in the Day.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Or the scene where he talks about how he cannot live as a person but at least maybe she will kill him and he will die as one. Or when her confession in the past intercuts with his walking in the present, or when he comes home in his bloodied armor and she finds he has a fever and it's the first tender touch he's probably ever known. Her murdering So Ri Bu saying she knows she's going against filial piety in loving her parents' murderer, the way they hug, both bloody, as he says "let's live." The way she says she can't go on as she's hit rock bottom and he replies she cannot quit because she must accompany him to his rock bottom now. Honestly, the drama is a font of amazingness.
Also, the opening scene of Goryeo Khitan War or the scene of Yang Gyu ordering to shoot the captives and having to do so himself.
The OTP meeting again at the intersection at the end of ep 1 of Tell Me That You Love Me. SHS comforting ABH as he's having a traumatic breakdown in 19th Life. The love-making scene in Call It Love. There were a lot of great scenes this year.
BIGGEST CRUSH
Lee Jang Hyun, My Dearest - is that even a competition? He's flawed - vain, often emotionally closed off, not great at processing emotions, lashing out when hurt. He is also incredibly heroic in a real, knows the cost but bears it, kind of way. Whatever he does, he commits utterly but it's never without understanding the cost. He felt both larger than life and utterly real. He went through hell and maintained his soul and the way he loved Gil Chae was breath-taking to behold.
Tumblr media
Runner Up: Yang Gyu, Goryeo Khitan War - an experienced military commander who wins an impossible victory even as it ravages his soul. Competence is sexy as fuck.
Tumblr media
BEST SCENE STEALER CHARACTER
Rang, Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938 - 1938 really was Rang's chance to shine and he took it. For a character I started out disliking in the original, he really stole my entire heart in this drama. I am so glad he got his happy ending with his brother and his girl.
Tumblr media
Runner Up: Crown Prince, My Dearest. He started out as a sheltered, spoiled aristocrat, convinced the world owed him for existing. He grew up slowly and painfully into an amazing man. And then was murdered for it and I cried.
Tumblr media
NEEDS A SEQUEL
Arthdal - it leaves the story at a good stopping point but it's very much a "world in flux, adventures and conflicts continue" ending and I would love to see more of these characters. I know we won't but it would have been nice.
NEEDS SCISSORS TAKEN TO IT
Behind Your Touch - should have been snipped at birth.
TOO MANY SCISSORS TAKEN TO IT
Vigilante - I don't mean it had scissors taken to it because it's not cdrama and there is no NRTA, but this drama would have benefitted from being longer. I mean, I love fights and gay polycules as much as the next tumblr person but a bit more character development would not have come amiss. (ahaha - I said come. Leave me alone.)
TROPE THAT NEEDS TO DIE
I don't care about cops/doctors/trash collectors/whoever - workplace drama centering on their "cases" needs to die. I hate procedurals from any country and Korea is no exception.
FAVORITE TROPE WE’VE SEEN A LOT OF
Supernatural critter devoted to their OTP with all the power of their long life.
BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT
Our Blooming Youth - it was far from terrible but it was a giant meh. I was so excited to see Park Hyung Sik in a sageuk (that wasn't the hot mess that was Hwarang) and I adored the source novel. It actually started well and then...it's like Revenge of the Beige!
BIGGEST GOOD SURPRISE
I want to say Moon in the Day but to be honest, I was excited by posters and trailers so it wasn't wholly a surprise despite not having much of an opinion on the actors before I saw them. So I am going to say My Demon. I was bored by the trailers, I can't remember the last time I enjoyed a Kim Yoo Jung drama and before this year I would have said Song Kang was an incredibly limited actor in everything I've seen him in and not appealing to me at all. And here I am rabidly rabiding for this drama!
If I am not limiting myself to dramas but can use this for actors - Hwang Minhyun in My Lovely Liar. I genuinely did not think the man could act and then he gave such a pitch-perfect, nuanced performance out of nowhere!
2023 DRAMAS I HAVEN’T SEEN THAT I MOST WANT TO WATCH
I have actually watched all the kdramas that aired this year that I wanted to check out except for Evilive. I am saving this for when I have time.
BEST NON-2023 DRAMA I’VE WATCHED IN 2023
I don't know if I'd say it's the best but Say You Love Me (2004) with Kim Rae Won as a quasi monk seduced away from his true love by an evil older woman was a hell of a ride.
MOST ANTICIPATED
Love Song for Illusion (Lady assassin falls for her royal target who has two personalities), Captivating the King (lady spy falls for her royal target who is tormented) - notice a theme? Also Flower that Blooms at Night because Honey Lee in a sageuk, The Life of Mrs Ock (Lim Ji Yeon in a sageuk), The Love Story of Chun Hwa (an "erotic" sageuk, hmmmm, what?!), Hong Rang (Lee Jae Wook in a super angst sageuk), Queen Woo (that cast and set in Goguryeo!), Wong Kyung (about Lee Bang Won's wife and I love the cast.) Basically, if it's period, I am there with bells on.

All about Hanok, the Korean traditional home, using the oldest surviving example of the Maeng clan haeng-dan! It is an example of architecture from the beginning of the Joseon dynasty (start:1392) which has been maintained according to the old way of building.
The name 행단 refers to a place with a gingko tree, which makes reference to Confucius teaching pupils under a gingko tree. In Joseon, Confucian culture became a main part of the national culture, replacing previous national Buddhism in Goryeo dynasty.

I’m finally finishing up the second season of My Dearest on a long flight and:
1. First of all, don’t do this if you don’t want fellow passengers seeing you bawling on the plane;
2. All the joseon men blabbing on and on about how women are not worth saving after they’ve been “tainted” are pure trash;
3. Trash king is trash;
4. Trash “righteous” scholars are trash;
5. Gil Chae’s insecure trash husband is trash;
6. Basically I hate all the horrible men except for Jang Hyun and the old men from the forge who are protective of Gil Chae;
7. She’s not a man but I hate the princess too;
8. God this drama does not pull any punches when it comes to showing the brutality of the invaders (and sometimes the Joseon people). I love that Korea doesn’t seem to have any issues about depicting how awful their rulers can be unlike other countries coughchinacough
9. I love how tenacious and smart Gil Chae is. Jang Hyun was right when he said she’s worth more than all those idealistic scholars combined.
10. Omg Nam Goong Min is so good. Just the slightest change in his eyes conveys so much. Totally deserving of all the acting awards.

Unbreakable Promise: Meet Me In Another Life. | Johnny Suh.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
prologue- “I’ve been waiting for you. Searching for you.” + “I’ve been here all along.”
summary: Johnny made a promise to find you when you reincarnate in another body. He waited years to find you on his search. When searching for your reincarnation, he meets a young girl in need of help. Will he fall in love again?
tw- fox!johnny x human!y/n. Smut. Romance. Joseon era sorta. Angst (many angst moments.) fluff. Dom!johnny. Y/n gets her shit railed tbf. Hitting it from the back. Hair pulling. Mention of master x servant relationship. Johnny calls her mistress. Johnny is a LOYAL BF.
note- KINkTOBER FIC.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Do you know what’s the most dangerous thing for a Mountain Fox Spirit to ever encounter? It is a young beautiful woman that makes his heart quench and fall in love.
Foxes are undesirably romanticist. They devote themselves to one person forever, even in life and death they will not find someone else to love. They shall die alone or with you. The foxes who are meant to be servants to serve one master are undoubtedly loyal to the bone and will not hesitate to kill millions for only just one person. They can be blinded by love all they wish, even if it meant the god of calamity shall murder him on the path. If it meant to have karma debt in the next life, so be it, everything will get better when you live next to the one you love and wish to keep thousands upon thousands years forever like the moment. However obsession can’t get you anywhere but a dead end.
Johnny made an unbreakable promise to his lover and master. He was unable to protect her from the sudden death by an arrow to the heart, killed by the selfish village folks. Painting of her crying face, dirty by the charcoal and hair ruffed up when he squeezed it right to his chest once her last breathe was ‘I’ll see you in my next life.’ lives rent free in the fox servant’s mind. Her voice, he wants to listen to it again. Oh how much it kills his heart. It hurts to live without your lover, he feels like he is being killed and put back alive while surviving in this ridiculous world.
If it wasn’t for his promise, the promise that he swears to abide with his life, if only if he didn’t make it he would’ve ended himself and follow you into the afterlife. Quite extreme right? But it’s the truth. The pain of surviving and staying alive while your lover for life is gone from earth and in the afterlife waiting to be reincarnated, it is insufferable. Hardest pain he’s ever went through.
“I promise i will find you, reincarnate please. I will find you no matter what.”
The man wearing the traditional Joseon era hanbok with the black loose hair flipping through the fingers, he sits down by the very traditional house resting on the mountains away from civilisation to bother him. It is rising above the village down there. The typical joseon house has a small bath section for anyone to use, multiple slide door rooms and they sleep on the floor. The fox looking up at the round sun blazing like a hot fireball today, made him close his eyes until he moves to sit under a shed.
“Did god of sun have to make today so hot, darn it.” Johnny cursed, sighing out.
“Oi fox did you get the cabbage like i told you to.” The old hunch lady with a cane approaches the young man, poking him by the cane annoyingly. She cackled when Johnny grunts flicking the cane away from him. He would reveal the large basket of cabbage he had carried on his back from the village and up the long mountain hill pathway, in this forsaken raging heatwave from the sun.
“Ahh I see you did.” She coos as she takes the cabbage basket, humming happily. Johnny watches her as he clicks his tongue. “Old hag you always make kimchi. Why?”
The elderly woman turns to the fox. “Because it’s good. Don’t you like my kimchi?” She asks as she sat down on the wooden floor, breaking apart the fatha the leaves in miniature pieces.
“I do like it but why don’t you make something with meat.” He gushed. It’s hard living with only vegetables, at this point he will go back to his vicious meat eater days where he ate human liver.
“Meat is expensive. Fox if you’re hungry just go and hunt. Isn’t that in your nature?” The woman replies back and he pouts, disappointed by the stereotype. “I’m classy, not like those savage foxes. I prefer a cooked meal by you granny.”
“Tch some useless fox you are. Maybe you spend so much time in civilisation with humans that you forget you’re a bloody fox.” She points out as if analysing Johnny’s whole life he’s lived. Johnny clicks his tongue. “My master was human. I adapted to her ways, I don’t plan on changing if that’s what you’re asking me to do.” He chides defensively and the Hag let a short lived chuckle at the boy who was so eager on staying in he past, in the past where his master lived on as an alive being and not a dead corpse. Johnny has kept things the same, the traditional house has your room untouched, the hanboks she wore were clean and kept away in the clothing pile. The things she loved to eat were still stacked and bought. Johnny simply did not want to move past your death, even if it was thirty five years ago. When his master has died he lived alone for five years until he met this old grandma on the street slums of the village, though she wasn’t just some old lady, she was a shaman. The old soul has sacrificed herself for immortality, simply to live forever as an old shaman soul, leading people into the light. The shaman could recognise who he was. She saw Johnny’s ears and nine tails, simply because she herself isn’t human.
“Sheesh. You rather live in the past.” She had respond back in a blunt tone, washing the cabbage kimchi in the bowl. He didn’t reply but mentally he agreed. Johnny was scared and too heartbroken to move past the death scarring him every night.
“I know you searched for her while you were in the village too. How did that go?” Shaman asked and Johnny was brought back to the time earlier he was searching while shopping, technically not slacking off but at the same time he was multitasking two tasks. Looking for your reincarnation in public while shopping the kimchi cabbage. The fox would lure girls that had similar face structure to you or that gave him a vibe it might be your reincarnation. But everytime he went and checked, stripping the left side of the hanbok to reveal the shoulder, there was no bite mark. It wasn’t you. None of these girls were you. By the time he had checked, he had to run away because the girls were screaming pervert.
In his defence Johnny did not care if palace guards patrolling the village would arrest him, in all honesty he could breakout and leave never to be found again, however it would be a hassle for him to be caught anyways. Humans are very persistent people. The times he was frustrated and down to see how none of these were your reincarnation, he began to wonder if you were even reincarnated. Johnny begged the gods in the sky to tell him if you were reincarnated and they all replied with a yes. They had no reason to lie to him about this. Surely, you are somewhere roaming here. He just doesn’t know where.
Johnny flings up in sudden movement when the sharp ears twinkle around to the sound of a panting voice as if it were running at high speed with the background voices of guards rushing towards her it seems. Johnny’s eyes avert from the side looking at the grandma. “I’ll be back old hag. See ya.” Johnny shouts leaving the porch as he ran to the helpless girl to help her out. But curiosity has died quickly when the girl would be met with the traditional house, in front seeing the muscular handsome man in the navy blue white hanbok and a seared swordsman sword. She rushes to the six foot man, gasping. “Help me please they are looking for me.” She cried looking behind where no sign of them except the loud ranging voices becoming louder and louder indicating that they were coming closer to them. Johnny looks down with an apathetic gaze. “Why should i help you?” He grumbles pushing the girl away from his body when she had held his right hand desperately. She flings down on the ground, coughing out the dust from the sand stone floor. “Please! I ran away . They will bring me back to him.” She pleads. Johnny couldn’t help but wonder what this young girl did so badly to be chased by guards and soldiers. He tilts his head, sighing.
Tears ran soon streaming down her cheeks, those Pearl shape eyes with deep emerald green mixed in with brown ache watching the man who was about to walk away and leave the helpless girl get arrested. But when those tears drop down like blood from his master’s body, he was reminded of the crying face the dead lover made when she had died. Johnny with widen eyes, Stops on his tracks . Why did he get this flashback with you?
“Get inside the house.” Johnny commands, lifting your frail body on the feet. Your hanbok would be lifted as you ran into the house. The man stands where the guards have appeared finally, rushing in. Johnny pulls out the sword, body silhouette glowing with a yellow outline leaking out the power of the nine tails.
Sword pointing to the army of soldiers, in a swung and a gentle step in the air, a single slash stows towards the soldiers flinging them on the ground unconscious. Wind breeze echoes through them. The power of the air and fire fox, never underestimate Johnny suh, the mountain spirit.
He turns shaking his head at them, tutting to the unconscious bodies. “Oh dear god. This couldn’t really went the easier way if you hadn’t stepped in my territory.” Johnny would say with a scolding tone. The girl gasped averting the man to look at her.
“You have tails and ears!” You point out as they were wiggling in the yellow outline. Johnny looks down to the clean shining sword before pushing it back to the sheath, he comes forward . You saw the ears and the tail disappear and immediately flinch when Johnny held your wrist tight.
“Forget this happened.” Johnny said as his eyes turn golden yellow. You blink at him, whispering. “Uhm...you’re hurting me.” You point out lightly as you look down to the tight wrist hold. Johnny banally let’s go, confused why the hypnosis and memory erasing did not work on you; eyes went back to deep black colour, as he clears his voice.
“Well this is stupid.” He murmurs under his breath. “I saved you. I hate being in debt to people, so this is the only time i help you, human girl.”
“Right. I’m sorry for the trouble. Uhm.” Johnny walks away midway my sentence as i shout out with my hand out for a handshake. Seemingly the man was quite blunt and uninterested at first— the sudden change of heart made you wonder what made him help you, a stranger running away from the soldiers. “My name is y/n!” You exclaim shakily with your hand out, looking down at your palm waiting for him to take him it. Johnny raises an eyebrow, as if he were analysing y/n from head to toe. The man lightly pulls his hand forward grabbing yours with a shake. He then lets go.
“Johnny.” He replied quietly.
────⊱──────⊰✯⊱──────⊰────
“Come on eat as much as you want!” The elderly beams as she fed you more and more, seemingly this felt like a fever dream. lovely warm grandma was feeding you, your saviour was on the left side of the wide open room protesting from feeding you a lot as well as saying how you shouldn’t be staying here and go back to the village where you came from. But the grandma retorts with disagreements. Seemingly Johnny didn’t like arguing with the grandma. He respected her, despite being years older than her.
“I’ll eat to my hearts content then, granny.” Y/n smiles digging into the lovely kimchi and soup. It was warm, salty with the kimchi and it felt healthy. The rice she gave you was amazing too. It was a first time you had such a big meal in your life.
Johnny from afar would be observing the young girl with an aching feeling of regret, why did he get such a bad feeling from you? The fox bites on the beautiful print fan (in other words called the Shan.) in his palm flicking back and forth the beautiful night starry air, a complete difference from the horrible heatwave earlier. Johnny blooms to glare at the grandma who watched him with a warning gaze.
“Why was the soldiers chasing you exactly?” Johnny interrogated coming in closer to look at you, dropping the wooden curve spoon into the soul as you turned to realise Johnny was now closer to you, watching your face to see the reaction. Y/n clears her throat. “You could say i was forced into something and i refused.” You tell and the grandma lets out a soft sigh.
“What did the soldiers do now. They are the most corrupted people here aside the royalty.” The elderly spat .
Johnny scoffs. “What were you forced into?”
“I was told to sleep with a customer. He was quite rich and powerful in the place I worked out. I refused when he tried to strip my hanbok out and I ran. Then the guards were chasing me.” You shrug it off when the memory replays in your head , like a haunting dream ready to scar you for the rest of the life. Johnny hums. “So aren’t you going back home?” He throws impatiently, Johnny earned himself a slap behind the head from the grandma.
You drop your mouth a little without a sound leaving, looking away with a stammer. “I will but can you let me stay at least for two nights? I’m scared to go back so early. I doubt the soldiers will stop looking for me tomorrow.”
Johnny stares blankly thinking what to answer with, if it’s only two days then perhaps he could make an expectation on letting y/n stay; either way it is not like the old hag will let him push the young girl out this late at night back to the village when she has no family relations to anyone whatsoever. He isn’t that cruel, even though he is cold and quite a blunt person like a solid rock. He will never put a girl in danger unless crossed. Johnny stands up with a shrugging bounce to the shoulders made. “Only two nights. That’s all you are getting.” The fox warns.
You exclaim happily with grateful eyes, you bow your head in the ninety degree angle before lifting it to stand up holding Johnny’s hands with yours. He saw the way your face instantly lit up, glowing light and stars born in those so-familiar eyes. The way your smile was this dark gloop of fear and sadness overthinking your safety, cracking in to the familiar winsome grin. Her smile was like a sudden beam of sunlight illuminating the nightfall darkness outside. Outshining even the mightiest god of sun and light. Where did this feeling of comfort, warmth and familiarity come from you? When did he feel this amount of same kindness and compassion. The same facial expression, eyes smiling too; why was it you?
“Thank you so much, Johnny! I promise I won’t cause trouble. You’re a kind fox.” Y/n laughs a little with a soft echo in her voice. He blankly stares, body frozen like a statue standing still . Your touch melted him if he were ice. The man flinches away his hands from your hand grasp, retracting it back to his chest. He softly nods, quietly murmuring. “Whatever i’m not cruel enough to kick you out and even if i did do that, the old hag would curse me probably.” He points out eagerly at the elder woman who sent daggers to him. Y/n felt the way he was very closed off, almost as if he was scared to become close to you, but why? The girl tilts her head, the same warming gracious smile stays on her face . “I’m still grateful. Thank you.” You tell him with genuinely.
As shield of Earth the night is given upon celestial clock. Gates of heaven and hell soon open releasing endless spirits to wander the land amongst humans. Night deepens each forest brown to the hues that are my soul-song, animals coming out of hiding no longer afraid to reveal the longitude to Mother Nature. On this night the natural black hugs the stars as a mother would to a newborn child when born, the floating little rocks shining bright above the sleeping humans in the village and the wide awake fox resting on the porch next to the small rising lake and a ticking cat waving paw with a shrine and a picture. A cold night, a lucid moon, heaven's eyes shine in the black as divine watchful mother seems like the only thing that never changes to Johnny. Every decade passing he has witnessed many moons that look the same, lonely in the sky, bright as day. Stars coming and going whilst the icy breeze grows angrier.
Johnny could never sleep even if he tried to. Perhaps it was in his genes to not be able to grow fond of the dream land. Only once he could ever feel the symptoms of tiredness. Only once. The house becomes dastardly quiet whenever the mortals go hit the hay, but Johnny finds comfort in it as much as he finds pain in it. Why is it that the darkness covering the night time starts to make you reminisce on the deepest pit of your worries? He can’t ever escape it no matter how much he runs or tries to no longer think back on it, his heart always finds a way to entangle itself on the hauntingly image of his dead lover. Though gods punish him for ever losing a master— it is considered a crime and disgrace for the fox spirit community. Johnny fell from the social status but he does not care. Johnny fell harder when the image of his dead lover and master in his arms grew cold like the North Pole.
The room available for Y/n to use was the only room filled with women clothing and bedding. Quite a large room for one person as if it were a royalty bedroom made just for the finest of women alive. Y/n was born in a poor setting from the beginning, an orphan to be exact so coming across a room like this left you in a stumble, wondering if it was okay for you to even sleep down on the bed like a normal person. But somehow your heart ached seeing this setup. The clothes freshly washed and hang made you want to sob. The feelings of nostalgia hit like a tsunami emerging from the earth’s cracking ground. You couldn’t explain why, so you shrug it off and went to bed. But when you fell into your subconscious the same old routine came.
The same old nightmare chases you anywhere you stay reside in. The inner child version of you cried on days like this to yourself, holding knees to the chest, pinching the your forearms to remind yourself this was the reality and your nightmares were not. The eight year old you would of stayed up all night, becoming an insomniac; child you slept on the day and stayed awake in the night. Sixteen year old you would become numb and cold revisiting the nightmare every night, you bought sleep medicine hoping it might perhaps help you sleep easier, if any it made the dream worse a ten thousand fold. But now, you are twenty years old. A fully grown adult who has experience this long lived nightmare dream for over nineteen years without a single night of hopeful dreams.
Red. Everything ran red. Sharp pain hits the chest like a wooden stake to the heart was cutting your body open like a flat pillow stuff feathers, as if you were nothing but a lightweight rock stomped on. Blur voices and tears align, as did image of fire spreading like a running carriage filled with cattle’. - Female voice screaming dents you in fear as your body wrinkles in the bed, pushing off the duvet cover as well as blankets off, whimpers breathily intake the entire room.
In that moment, eyes snap open as the body jolts up. The young girl pushing back forth the straight long dark hair backwards, drenching with cold sweat along the forehead, dropping on the traditional dress you wore all day, Underneath the clothing were a pounding heart. Y/n looks around the room cautiously extremely paranoid, eyebrows raised to the roof as eyes wide like charcoals, mouths trembled out a sigh and the hands wrap themselves into an hug. Y/n embracing her own body as a self comfort to soothe the situation down, you make mini pinches on the forearms to check if this was the reality. Indeed it was when the small pain strikes you. “It was just a dream,” The girl said to oneself.
The sudden urge to quench the thirst from the dry closing throat, the young woman gets up on two legs leaving the room quietly. Y/n makes her way forward until stopping as the bright blue moonlight shining soon illuminates the man underneath it with one hunch leg, slouching against the wooden pillar to the traditional korean joseon house entrance. The man with the loose blue navy white hanbok, to his only company were a teapot set and white bolder like cups. She comes forward slowly, but stops when the man’s voice strikes her; he knew she was coming even if he has never look towards her direction. He was facing forward into the melancholy distance.
“Can’t sleep, Y/n?” Johnny utters with a husky tone catching the trembling you off guard. The girl purse her lips into a thin line and sits next to the fox spirit softly nodding out a hum. “How’d you know?” Y/n asks and the man turns to look at her.
He points out, like it were a factual reasoning. “Fox ears make it hard to block out noises.” Y/n’s lips open faltering out an ‘oh. Right.’
Silence took a left completely crashing the moment and both of you like a truck. Johnny seemingly found comfort in it but you on the other hand struggled to be quiet, multiple questions form a novel because you seem to want to know more about the man who looks both sadden and lonely when watching the moon ahead. You can’t put your finger on why and what it was causing Johnny to look that way. It draws you in however, as if he was a magnet.
You hush out when beginning to speak once again. “Why can’t you sleep?”
Johnny reaches to the half full cup bringing it to the plum pucker lips and sips the herbal tea. “Are you always this chatty, Y/n?” He grumpily throws.
Your lips seal together like an envelope. Knitting eyebrows forward at the shady comment he has made. He might not be interested in you as much as you are into him but despite the pushing your presence kept marching on. You’re determined to get to know Johnny as a person. Your round eyes squint at the fox. “No. Only when I want to be. Does that bother you?”
You gently ask and Johnny goes to agree. “In a matter of fact yes. Why do you keep talking to me?”
“I want to get to know you more.” Y/n replies. The reasoning were so simple for mortals but for Johnny it felt like cheating, cheating on his dead partner and master. Foxes don’t feel the urge to make friends with other mortals, not unless it were other fox spirits. He can feel the persistence from you, something that was familiar with mortals.
He grimly stress, gritting the canine teeth at you. “I am taken.” Johnny tells you. Y/n’s jawline cracks at the sudden words as you pause, putting your hands to your chest as you spoke, defensively.
“I don’t mean it like that!” Y/n scowls. Johnny scoffs mentally, sure you don’t. Mortals are such easy sinners and to fall in love, in no doubt are you interested in him romantically. Even if you’re not aware of it, Johnny knows you will in the end at the friendship.
“Oh please save me your sappy story. Humans are hopeless romantics it’s unbelievable. I cannot be your friend.” Johnny states.
“Fine, don’t be my friend. But at least make a conversation with me since we both can’t sleep.” You compromise in which the fox said nothing, you took it as a yes. The silence came back but soon broke when johnny finally speaks first, starting the chat. The man gave in to answer your question out of nowhere, catching you ultimately in a surprise.
Johnny sighs. “I don’t sleep. except once.”
“You didn’t sleep at all except one time?” You gawk loudly with a short hitch. Johnny nods putting the empty cup down. “Whoa. Here I thought I was the biggest insomniac.” Y/n impressively said back.
On the man’s face a charming smirk begins to paint clearly, he flashed you a mugging grin with one eyebrow raised, mischievous eyes glint at your doe-ish fluttering eyelashes.
“Why can’t you sleep then, miss insomniac number two.” He casually asked,
You shift not exactly expecting him to follow up with a question you never really spoke of to anyone before. The girl puts the straight hair behind the ears, blowing on your lips as you complement wether you should tell him at all. Johnny watches the uneasy expression you, as he looks away to the moon. “Forget I asked. I didn’t realise it was a touchy subject.” Johnny hollows with simple understanding putting you at slight ease, but then you didn’t want to exactly stop talking. You softly whisper.
“It’s not that I’m uncomfortable. I just don’t know how to explain it.” You start and Johnny listens well and keenly at your voice he surprisingly finds relaxing. The man turns to look back at you. “You see, I only dream the same reoccurring nightmare all my life. I never had a nice dream before. No one knows this before, you are the first one that have asked me why I can’t sleep.”
There was something so saddening about the way you have lived all along this time to Johnny, he couldn’t put into words why he seems to take minor pity but at the same time a protective approaching manner to want to keep you safe and at ease. What exactly was it about you that makes him so sensitive about the bad scenarios and things that could happen to you so easily and why does it piss him off? It’s been so long that someone else has made an effect on him. The fox shifts watching the way you spoke about your situation, with carefree patience and comfort. For someone who has suffered from the moment of being born into this deadly world era you take comfort in the pain you experienced and you find safety in it too. This is what makes you strong in Johnny eyes though. You aren’t afraid to be vulnerable or to be sensitive. You are like a tapestry, no matter where you are placed; rough or smooth pathway. You will always get through it.
“I wonder what it is like to not dream. For at least a night, I wish to just sleep.” You murmur openly and Johnny smiles at your words. “For someone who was born into nothing, you are pretty good of a human.”
Your lips curve upwards smiling back at the man, tilting your head as you brought your legs to the chest. “For someone who said they don’t want to be friends, you listen to me rambling. You’re a good fox.” You praise reaching with your palm, stroking the soft raven hair flatly. Johnny’s face grows a light orange reddish colour heating the cheeks, the fox ears flicker in an appreciative manner to the solely actions of your soft warm hands pressing and running through the hair to pet the man. Johnny’s eyes waver like the sea at shore backwards and forwards, lips pucker as they stare to question you. The praise lift his dead heart to beat again. Johnny embraces the nostalgia in the moment,
He swore he heard his dead master’s voice over yours just now. The way you praise him was in so many ways similar to the way his dead lover did so. Your hands felt identical and you both look like twins. Johnny felt tricked, oppressed into being met with you. But still, he felt uneasy if he was right about you.
“What are you doing, Y/n..!” He exclaims quickly as he jolts back, holding your wrist in his hands to pull you forward. The girl’s body stumbles back losing balance instantly, she fell over his lap, face forward inches away from Johnny’s lips and the chest pressing right on to his own. Johnny felt the lingering scent obsess the nostrils entirely. The fox ears capture your breathing hitch on halt, your heart thumping like his own right now and his body felt an electric strike setting a small ember inside. Both your faces were barely a gap away from pressing together, but what brought Johnny into a catastrophe was the way his eyes lean down to your glossy peachy lips wanting to take a taste of them. But he can’t. You aren’t his reincarnation he was looking for.
That’s what he thought until the left hanbok came loose falling on the side revealing a faded bite mark deeply inscribed into the woman’s body. She let out a shocking gasp as the bare nude shoulder and dainty collarbones block Astounding man’s view. He darkly and deemly seeks an answer, catching you by your shoulders now, he had you placed on the floor underneath him. The woman’s figure was pressed down into the wooden floor like a sliced wooden log, crushingly laying underneath the heavy weight from the fox straddling the body. Hands gripping y/n’s shoulders tight like the life depend on it. Johnny’s glaring eyes fixated on the scar you hid on your left shoulder all along. Memories coming into his head like a flood.
“Please reincarnate, Y/n. I will find you with this mark made by me.”
The flashback ends with your mortified face watching Johnny warily wondering why he was deathly staring at the old mark you never knew why you got it in the first place; you just had it from birth you suppose. He breaks out softly.
“How did you get this mark, Y/n.” Johnny commands with a look that killed you inside. You become silent all of the sudden, the courage to answer the man above you, keeping you trapped, it was scary to respond. Johnny only became aggravated by the shock, it felt almost surreal to him so all he felt was tricked. He couldn’t believe it was real. The paranoia inside Johnny made him so angry, he wondered if he was projecting the thirty five years searching for you all along onto you. When in reality, he’s crumbling. He’s a broken somebody. “How did you get this mark, Y/n!” He screams, hands shaking the woman’s body up and down before dropping her flat on the wooden floor.
The girl flinches closing her eyes, exclaiming in a scream back at the man. “I don’t know! I had it since I was born. You happy?” You grunt out when Johnny was overcame by his own silence. The man falls backwards, off your body as he rests flat, letting out a soft scoff. He finally found you. The five stages of grief was not enough for Johnny, he needed at least twenty stages of grief to cope with. You sit up pulling on your hanbok covering the left side. Johnny looks down hanging his head low.
Y/n slowly stands up rushing back inside the bedroom, closing the sliding door shut. Johnny was left in his own presence, wondering what he’s just witnessed. Surely, it couldn’t be you. But it was his bite mark, the exact same bite mark from the canine fox teeth. Johnny shakes his head in his hands, rubbing the eyelids heavily.
He sobs clenching his hands together. “It was you all along.”
What hurts the most is not the that it was you who was his longing lover’s reincarnation. What hurt Johnny was that even though he told himself so many times that he was ready to meet you, to see you, that he cannot wait another year searching for you only to be hit with a dead end. In reality he wasn’t ready to see you reincarnated. You were both different but similar at the same time in this reincarnation. Johnny couldn’t tell you that you’re his reincarnated lover, hell-, how will he explain that to you? It hurts that he wasn’t ready to accept the fact that you out of all people, cannot remember him. But he remembers you like it was yesterday.

Morning arrives as a mother's gentle hand, inviting the dreams of night to enter the day. Golden threads of morning sunshine plants on Johnny’s face, scrunching in many wrinkles in irritation. The nine tailed fox sat up half asleep and half awake, rubbing the eyelids to fully open them in a clear view, the man let out a soft yawn. The grandma came into sight immediately, jump scaring Johnny literally to fall backwards, hitting the wooden pillar unexpectedly. He forgot he slept on the floor at the entrance like a guarding dog.
“Ow! Old hag did you have to be so close to me when i open up.” Johnny complained forward as he points at the old woman who glares clicking her tongue. “You drank the entire fermented alcohol. Do you know how expensive this is? Darn it Johnny. “ the grandma scolds like a family member would to another. Johnny let’s out a soft nod. “I’ll just get another one easily. Relax.” He adds before standing up walking to the porch where he watches the distance. Village happens to be wide awake in the acute shining sunshine, this time it was the right amount of heat and breeze. In the distance caught Johnny’s eyes to manoeuvre to the direction of a girl wearing familiar expensive silk dress.
He gapes at the sight rushing towards the young girl with long black straight hair and fair skin, back turned on him he couldn’t see her face but when he approached the girl who was gardening in the forest, hunch on the knees. Johnny stops pulling a hand by the shoulders turning the girl to face him, he were met with Y/n. The same pondering expression on Johnny’s face overloads Y/n’s foresight, she blinks uncomfortably, feeling terrified as last night was quite scary. Johnny this time felt more calm and compressed, but he was left stunned. It was only just you wearing his master’s and lover’s clothing because you couldn’t of kept the dirty ones on— but when you wore them, you look spitting image of her. Johnny shakily release the top of his hand from your left shoulder, looking away he clears his throat. “Sorry. You looked like someone I knew.”
Johnny backs away and you nod softly without saying much. Only new questions were born upon old questions you needed answers to when you were with Johnny alone. It’s draining for your overthinking physically and mentally.
The situation dynamic has shifted from last night and it made you self conscious about it. Previously in the day when Johnny and Y/n met for the first time he wasn’t interested in you, in fact he was shooing you every opportunity he had with you alone. You were the one chasing. But now that you stopped chasing after last night’s incident because you were scared of what he was doing . Johnny became the chaser at the end. He keeps thinking of you as his master and servant when in reality you aren’t her exactly; you were her in your previous life. But not anymore and Johnny cannot grasp the concept. It’s like seeing the same people with different alter egos. The similarities kill him however, every similar thing you do was the exact thing you did in your past life. Johnny was only more deluded by these things.
You sigh openly as you begin to softly pat the soil into the seed hole you planted forming a small oversized flat soil ground to keep it the seed to grow and securely stay. “Why are you still here?” Y/n asks, quite bluntly this time.
Johnny shifts on the side with a surprise flinch, rubbing the behind of his head. Why did he feel so little when he was with you? Perhaps the stern voice you’re using on him makes him think even more of you as his master. As his one and only sole priority. Johnny stammers. “I’m just… watching you. You got a problem?” He throws back.
You clench your jaw together. “Maybe. You are suddenly really clingy to me. Yesterday you weren’t.”
‘Yeah but yesterday I didn’t know you were her…’ Johnny would thought.
It’s true. He completely changed overnight. He was more caring with you, more considerate. Not once did he make a kick out joke, it’s as if he wants you to stay here permanently. Johnny would’ve usually glare at you with his resting apathetic face, but now he looks at you with beaming relief eyes with happiness and warm love at the same time. It was weird, to see him smile at you and speak to you without needing to put any effort like you once did. You wonder, what changed him?
Ever since he saw that mark on yours on the shoulder, it was like a switch in him flipped.
“Y/n. Do you believe in reincarnation?” Johnny softly asks on the side as you dig up the soil with your hands. You stop when the man held your hands together softly where he positions your hands to his direction, the hem of your hanbok sleeves were about to get dirty if you continued gardening that way. Johnny rolls the pink sleeves up, you watch his attentive gaze and actions before he lifts his eyes from the done sleeve and looked at you.
You softly shrug. “Maybe. Im not sure, i used to believe spirits weren’t real. But here I am speaking to a fox spirit.” You lightly said going back to gardening, digging up the hole with your hands. Johnny smiles watching you. The fact that maybe means a lot to him. He’s whipped for you.
“It’s true. Reincarnation can happen.” Johnny urges and you open your lips in slight waver. “How exactly does reincarnation work? Why do people get reincarnated.”
The whole process of reincarnation is an iffy one to explain because it is quite a complex thing to do and to understand. Johnny himself wasn’t quite sure at first when he were a small cub. The underworld god, Hades, controls the living who have died (therefore he chooses if they reincarnate or not.) Johnny met Hades once, after his past lover and master died with the arrow to the heart her soul was taken by a boat crossing the lake into the underworld. Johnny did anything and begged the grim reapers (workers for hades) to take him to see your past life self once again. To which the grim reapers agree only for a few seconds he could see her. In reality Johnny could not restrain himself and he pleads to Hades to let her reincarnate no matter what.
To be able to reincarnate in the next life once you die, you have to have a balance between karma and the sins you have gained. It would be a better task if you didn’t sin at all, the more likely you are to reincarnate. But since it was his master who has died, aimlessly Hades took it as a shameful dead for a fox master to die so tragedy. It took fifteen years to reincarnate you. Johnny Thirty five years overall searching for you. He met you in your new reincarnation form where you are twenty. Johnny definitely got lucky though, some reincarnation can put you into a whole another gender and appearance, same gender and a different appearance or perhaps an animal even. But he knew hades would reincarnate you as a human. He just didn’t know what gender you were going to be. But no matter what gender you would be, Johnny will love and serve you, his feelings would not change.
“People get reincarnate into their next life because it was either to pay the karmic debts which will make them learn a lesson for hard life. Or… someone has begged the underworld god for you to be reincarnated again.” Johnny explained. “You see, I’m waiting for someone to be reincarnated.” He told and you look up at him, pondering. “My master and lover. She died and I’m searching for her.”
You stop whatever you’re doing as you slowly lean backwards resting on a large boulder rock. Johnny watches you with ease, as he is quite tall. The man witnessed your soft hair blowing past the breeze, reveal your neck and the beautiful pink and white hanbok, your hair lightly styled with help of granny in the house. Johnny’s feelings for you only increased, you were a spitting image of her.
She teasingly adds. “So you’re not taken but you’re waiting for her.”
Johnny pouts dropping his keen expression earlier. He turns his head away, crossing arms. “I am taken. Even if she is not here, I am not single.” He points out and you click your lips together forming a snickering grin. “Oh you must really love her Hm? Loyal like a dog to a bone.” He heard you state and his ears flicker to your voice he so loves hearing.
“Foxes can only love one person. Romantic is it not?”The fox remarks catching the young girl by the question as she approaches him where he stayed resting underneath a tree.
“I find it sad.” Y/n dryly said with a gloomy sigh. The young woman could only imagine in her head like a novelty poem, if her lover was left behind waiting for her to be reborn, it would make her sad to think that someone so devoted has spend their entire life searching eagerly. Johnny felt his hand subconsciously moving to embrace Y/n but he stops himself, restricting on being physical with you; you don’t remember him. As much as he remembers you.
“Sad? How come Y/n.” Johnny spoke after a moment of self reflection, holding out on the body. You walk around freely by the forest entrance, as the man behind you follows slowly, like a duckling following a mother duck.
Y/n sympathetically trails with a voice resembling the waves from the ocean, emerging and submerging anything in its way. Johnny felt like he becomes stuck when surrounding by you, as if he were choking on your unpredictable words . Johnny never felt entitled to make you sad. But he made an unbreakable promise to you. “If I were the one to be reincarnated. I wouldn’t want my lover to wait for forever. I feel like that would pain me to think, so many years go by and my lover was there letting life go by until I was found.”
“It sorta made me sad putting myself in his shoes.” You add finally, turning on your heels to watch Johnny from who was behind following you. He stops on the tracks as he was met with a soft smile, shunned him like a running horse crashing into him to fall on the ground helplessly. He hotly smiles. “You’re far too kind for this world, Y/n. But do not worry. I don’t plan on waiting much longer, I’m sure she’s out there somewhere.” Johnny carefully sways as he held out Y/n’s hands.
The moment came short lived but the young woman felt the warmth from the hands erect in her skin, casually wanting you the coldness to dissipate. Heartbeat skipped a beat when the charming fox did not break eye contact, as much as you wished to break it yourself you couldn’t do it. Johnny was far too quick to break the silence, as he casually and slyly comments into the light breezy air. “I heard there is a lunar festival going on right now. Do you want to go there with me?”
‘He’s asking me to go somewhere with him…’ you thought. Y/n wasn’t sure what this feeling of a sparkling connection between you was but, you surely felt like you knew this man for a long time even though you only met him yesterday. The young girl softly nods with a soft cheerful smile in response.
────⊱──────⊰✯⊱──────⊰────
The festival was our collective soul in song, music and dance. It was the colours of our brightest joys and what weaved us together. To people this specific celebration was to honour the living into the next year, it was like a happy warm get to together in the village. Chatting voices and music play on repeat making it unable to hear a single voice from afar, the pleasantly music runs into peoples eardrums causing many to dance together. Walking by the market stands in a line where it was much more safer and comfortable, it was talkative and the music from distance could be heard at a tolerable safety. No one was dancing on this side of festival making it more or less cramping. The villagers dress up into flamboyant prints and masks. The market stands were a variety to chose from.
Johnny would notice Y/n running towards one stand in particular catching the girl’s enlarge curiosity, the moment she stops, Johnny runs to follow up to her. They stand in between a food stand that welcomes the customers through a strong sweet syrup smell and cinnamon. The fox leers closer when seeing the child-like excited expression on you, it was like this was the candy store making you look so giddy.
The woman at the stand beams forward at the girl and the man. “Oho would you like some dango?” Johnny gives a short nod. “Yes one for the young girl here.”
Y/n wows when the woman pulls away joining the behind as she takes out one of the warmly coated pink green and white dango on the stick; the brown warm syrup leaking down until it was swirl back up. Y/n grabs the dango, jumping up and down. Johnny bows his head as he paid a gold coin, soon following you when you disappeared to walk forward on your own.
You pull one dango in your mouth, blowing on it in your mouth as it was far too hot with the syrup, but it was awfully sweet and addicting. You smile happily chewing on the sweet snack. “Do you want to try, Johnny?” You’d ask catching the fox on the side staring right at you in awe.
‘She still has the sweet tooth.’ Johnny thought endlessly before you pulled him by the question to reality.
“I’m not really a fan of sweet things.” Johnny mentions and you pout stopping in your tracks as Johnny walks a few inches in front as well stopping when he noticed you no longer walking side by side. He turns to you tucking hands on the front hips. He wore a black traditional hanbok, carrying the sword sheathed on the right side to the gear attach and his loose hair slightly wet as he showered for this event. You wore a white sparkle hanbok shining underneath the moonlight in the black sky, hair tucked into a curl-like high bun and hair jewellery attached. You stopped with a sulking gesture when he refused, puffing out your rosey cheeks and your eyes watching him with displeasure. Johnny let’s out a small sigh coming forward to you with his giant-like height he leans down halfway biting into the stick. He took the middle dango gritting with the fox-canine teeth and pulls backwards no longer leaning down.
He chews on the hot dango and you smile instantly, he caught you off guard when he watched you as he bit on the dango and ate it, somehow the intense gaze made your heart thump again. Y/n felt her cheeks become flushed the more she thought about her heart pouncing like a wildebeest. She clears her throat when Johnny mentions, “Too sweet.”
“Do you prefer savour foods more?” You ask back as you continue to walk side by side and the man calmly remarks back. “I prefer meat to be honest. It’s not wether sweet or salty. I just like something hearty and full.”
“Ahh I see. Then let’s go here!” Y/n suddenly exclaims grabbing onto Johnny’s hands as she pulls the six foot man with her to another stand. This time it was a man grilling meat on sticks. Different types of meat. You saw the man’s expression widen like a temple opening, mouth dropping quick in awe as he eyes the meat viciously in hunger. The man chuckles pointing out, “alright young man it’s not going to run away.” He teased.
You chuckle as Johnny practically stomps on his feet cutely. You could only imagine him wagging all the nine tails in unison and the ears prickle with excitement if he had them on. You point at the long stick with the excessive meat in.
“One of this please sir.” You politely gesture. The man nods with a smile as he pulls the stick towards the man. Johnny puts on a gold coin for the man. “Have a nice day couple!” He cheers and you jump at the words when leaving, about to reject the idea to stop forth from confusing the market stand owner, Johnny wraps an arm around your shoulders lightly, as he noms on the meat graciously.
He cannot remember when it was the last time he had a taste of beautiful soft and tender meat cooked to perfection. The granny back at the house only makes kimchi upon kimchi. Johnny swore if he saw another vegetable he might lose it and go savage like back in the days when he did not have a human form. Johnny looks over to the beautiful girl residing him, as he puts the stick to the girl.
“Here take a bite.” He encourages as you stop and look at the meat on the stick. When you lean down to take a full bite of one, you chew on and hum satisfied when he waited patiently for your response if you’d like it or hate it. Johnny felt a relief of happiness and love rush in when you said it was good.
You smile watching the full moon ahead, sighing happily. “The moons beautiful tonight.” Johnny looks at you as he hums softly. “It is isn’t it.”
You turn to look at him but Johnny looks away clearing his voice . The man walks ahead as you smirk, was he watching you? The playfulness enrages more when you comply forward, Teasing the fox with both, joking manner and a little hint of flirting.
“I saw you looking at me over there.” You point out and Johnny scoffs. “I was watching the moon whaddya’ mean?”
You smile watching the grumpy expression on the man and you couldn’t help but chuckle. He’s so cute and see through, you can read right through him and you don’t know why. The connection between you was only growing stronger and stronger, it’s as if you knew him for so long. Johnny stops suddenly when he turns to the left, you pause stopping but the man turns to you urgently.
“Stay here. I’ll come back. Wait here.” He quickly said as he rushes away out of your sight. You stand there blankly as you turn around, pursing your lips into a thin line.
‘What could he be doing right now?’ You thought impatiently.
Your impatient cuts short when Johnny comes back calmly you unlock your arms that were together crossed and Johnny reaches for your hands with a short smile. “Here I thought this could help you.” He states when he reopened your hands the gift he had bought for you makes your body melt from the considerate loving gift he rushed to get you instantly. It’s the fact that you were on his mind, that makes you blush like a young teenage girl.
You look up exclaiming with a soft awh leaving the lips. “It’s a dream catcher!” You shout and he nods happily.
“This way you can sleep at night with good dreams only” Johnny told you with an abrupt smile. Y/n looks at Johnny before embracing the man tight. The warm embrace of your smaller arms against his wrapping the body like this cloud over the moon. Your hug has woven our souls in a way that is a forever bond. Johnny gets filled with hopes, only his love grew more for you and the hug has proven its feeling aloud. The man wraps arms around you back, slowly and carefully to not squeeze too tight. You pull away with the upmost happiest beautiful smile. Johnny never knew until now how much he loves your happy expression and smiles, he wants you to only smile and be happy forever.
“Thank you Johnny.” You say with gratitude and he shakes his head. “It’s nothing don’t worry.”
“Let’s go somewhere quiet, fireworks will start soon.” He beams now remembering the time and Y/n would soon be dragged with a hand intertwining with hers, pulling the girl with a short run to the unknown place where the fox is taking her to.
The grass beneath the shoes felt alive as it were waving forth motions on the nightfall cold breeze intergalactically perusing on the two who rest on the mountain edge hill perfect to sight see all the fireworks shot with an arrow forward the more they wait the anticipation rose and Y/n let’s out a soft sigh of content.
You were never this happy before. Perhaps you’re at your happiest when embraced by the friend next to you. But can you even call him a friend when you have these indescribable feelings for a man who is waiting for his dead lover to reincarnate? You could only hope it was you to be reincarnate. Johnny sways forward as he points out with eyes sparkling.
“It’s starting.” Johnny said to you as you turned your head to the front watching the beaming loud fireworks sparkling in the night as they combust and explode. Your face lights up at each explosion in the sky leading with many colours escaping above the both of you. Johnny couldn’t help but watch your intensive face on the side, admiring you at a close distance.
You’re just like you were before he first met you. Johnny took you to the same festival a long time ago. You had the biggest sweet tooth, you begged and pleaded him to try the candy floss and once he did Johnny was hit with exact the flavour he despised but even though he hated it so much, he was glad he could make you happy and you were smiling exactly like that then. He took you to see the stars because back then fireworks weren’t a thing, as you were stargazing Johnny took the courageous movement to kiss you softly as the stars were shining above and a shooting star fell. She wore different clothes. Different hair. Different makeup. But you look the same in his eyes when you watch the fireworks unable to look away, Johnny felt the sudden urge to kiss you just like he had then.
Following the instincts inside Johnny raging to do it right now, when he had moved his face closer you were quick to turn around and he paused a moment, inches barely from capturing your lips, the heavy warm breathing escaping the fox’s mouth left your heart beating suddenly again as you felt it in your throat. You gulp thickly thinking why did he stop suddenly? You really wanted him to kiss you right now. But it was as if the man was scared, scared to kiss you wondering if you’d reject him. Your hands latch on to Johnny’s hanbok collar suddenly causing the fox to jolt forward when you pull him with ease, the gap closes thanks to your bravery, you crashed your lips on his and Johnny swore he melts by the sudden confidence you had and he had not. He didn’t remember your past life ever being this confident, in fact she was quite mysterious and timid. But in this life time, you are confident and a Ray of sunshine easily going and content. You are also wise and compassionate, something you will always have no matter how many times you’re going to be reborn.
You took a control for a while until Johnny recovered where he suddenly puts a hand behind your head deepening the kiss until the way his tongue slips inside with almighty merciless strength, he had your tongue beneath him as he was exploring inside and out leaving no space unattended. Fox canine fangs were rubbing on the bottom lip making a soft ragged breathing come out, he heard loud and clear making him feel some type of way, with you loudly breathing it was a way for him to see you were enjoying yourself as much as he was too, as you did something flash in your eyes even when you had then closed a small taint memory came across your head, a woman identical to you wearing different hanbok with a familiar man next to her . Johnny shortly pulls away when noticing the way you struggle to keep in oxygen and you blush heavily as did he. The tan skin he has with a deep reddish colour as you had a light pink spreading fast like a disease on your skin.
He pulls away but rests forehead together, keeping the hand on your head from behind that left you comforted. Your eyes flutter open at the same time, he was met with your trembling oversized pupils dilating as you face the hungry lustful eyes with love rushing to the surface. Your mind wonders back to the flashback of an unknown memory you had unlocked with the kiss.
You stammer softly in which Johnny found endearing and cute. “I…I’m sorry i forgot you were taken.” You deeply said with regret. Your eyes depressingly linger down on the ground, watching the grass as you were unable to face Johnny. He probably holds this against you, your feelings against you. Little did you know Johnny was reaching forward to hold your face to face him directly, your eyes connecting once again.
“I’ve been waiting for you. Searching for you.” Johnny earnestly states with such loving words coming to your realisation it’s you who he has been looking for all along. He came back to you, to reclaim what he loves and belongs to him as much as he belongs to you. The master he’s patiently devoted his life and will never regret doing so. Y/n shakily places the cold hands over his, softly chuckling with teary eyes forming. It makes you sad to think that you made this man you love in both lives wait for you but now you’re not going to do so.
“I’ve been here all along.” You respond well reconnecting the soft lips on to yours, lovingly kissing the man first as a tear or two ran down your cheeks.
────⊱──────⊰✯⊱──────⊰────
Love spread across the wooden flooring of the traditional house. Everything reeks of sex and sweat though it comforts the two in their own stuck reality they have created. Two bodies launching together as one. It was like the perfect combination made, a lock to a key that fits perfectly and only the only perfect fit. Hanboks scattering on the floor as the woman’s bedroom aches at the weight forced. Y/n was on all fours arching at the front pillow, with one arm covering the mouth as it become endangered to let the escaping mellow moans out to attract attention, the fox thrusting behind had little to no intention on becoming slow and softer— those thirty five years pent up waiting for his lover to reincarnate he now has her underneath him where he’s going to show exactly how much he has missed his master. His mistress. His owner. The sole devotion he will serve.
The skin to skin contact brought back old memories as well as new memories being born. Johnny himself felt ascended into heaven with happiness he couldn’t hold back even as much as you told him to, he cannot do that. He can’t bring himself to calm down. The thrusts were irregular and messy, hitting all sorts of places inside you that yourself never knew you could hit. Being a virgin as well, the situation was not ideal but the way he expressed it was. You knew how much you kept him waiting, you wouldn’t want your virginity to be taken by anyone else but Johnny. Your servant. Your lover. The man you’ll love in your present past and future.
He held your stomach underneath with a flat palm, bringing you closer where the lustful fox completely indulgent into giving everything begins to scrape his mouth over the bite mark on the left shoulder. You hum softly as he kissed your jawline then the neckline and then softly plants a longing wet kiss onto the mark on the shoulder. “I’m glad you have the mark still.” He huskily said as you carefully trail. “Please give me a new one.” You engrave a demand that he could no longer refuse as Johnny smirks above a clean freshly skin on the right side, within a minute a long grazing sharp impact breaks your skin cracking it as he bites you. Your lover pressing on your back to lower down and fall face front to the pillow.
The pain dents you open with pleasure, as the sadistic fox pulls away licking it clean in satisfying manner before he proudly pounds open the soaking pussy of yours beneath him. He whispers sweet nothings such as ‘I missed you so much you had no idea.’ Or ‘I will not leave your sight at all.’ Some where incompetent groans that left your ears ringing on repeat.
With a hair pull you tug on your face front as he captures you on your lips softly, a complete contract to the way he let go off everything becoming a salvage animal. The sophisticated Johnny who was gentle and soft has disappeared but a small shadowing hint told you he was still there when he gave you this soft loving kiss on your lips, as he slows down with his cock twitching inside you, you came to a conclusion he was close to climax.
He was so focused on making you come earlier he completely forgot about his own release. Johnny was way too focused on you, on making you feel pleasure rather than himself and it’s always been that way; he wants to make you feel satisfied and experience it first because he can always wait. You are his priority. When he has released in you letting out a soft moan enough to break the kiss between you, you sigh of relief and at the warm liquid filling you full.
Johnny whispers in the air. “I love you, Y/n. I want to marry you.” His words came off as a surprise, a pleasant one. You turn around as he lingers above you weakly, caressing your face as he wraps both into the warm duvet covers. Pulling you into a small spoon in his chest where your face buried itself. You smile unconsciously pulling the man closer by his own waist too. “I love you too Johnny. You sure you want to marry me though?”
You’d ask as lifting your head meeting his eyes you raise your eyebrows jokingly and teasingly. “I thought you were taken.” Y/n spat out and Johnny couldn’t help but blush unbelievably.
“Yeah by you.” He points out with a soft stutter. You smirk kissing his forehead lovingly before brushing back the long black hair. “Okay let’s get married then. When?” You question and Johnny hums out.
“Next week?” He said back.
“This week.” You state back with a smile.
Johnny grins squeezing you into the embrace tighter. He definitely will never let go until morning, maybe he won’t ever let you go from this embrace with the intentions. “Tomorrow!” He finalised and you chuckle.
“Tomorrow then.” You softly say. “I love you, kind fox.”
“I love you, y/n.”
