Dragons & Thieves (Saiouma fantasy AU)

seems like the kind of trouble our boy protagonist could find himself in, and then, he could seek out help from someone who's, you know, great at disguising his own magic and deceiving people

Okay, so I think Kokichi should have some dragon ancestry for it to work. His mother is half-dragon and from a noble family, his father is a regular human and a thief. His mother send him away asap to avoid a scandal and he grew up at the guild of thieves. After his dad didn't come back from one of the missions he was told to start earning his keep, probably at around 7–10 years old. The guild used his identity becoming apparent as his ability to use dragon magic manifested to blackmail the noble lady and get some funds, some of it actually was invested into teaching him useful spells. So when they meet he's a seasoned thief and magic user.

THE DRAGON THAT DIED IS KAEDE

I just thought of it, but like. She disguised herself as human and became friends with Shuichi, just wanted a peaceful life, is one human lifetime too much to ask for? Can't an old dragon get some normalcy? Apparently no, a hunter got her (Tsumugi?)

So Shuichi ends up with the magic and gets chased by the very same hunter, goes to hide in a very unassuming, plain looking building. It's the thieves hideout made to look like this with Kokichi's magic. And to any person who has less magic than Kokichi it would be the least attention grabbing background to other buildings in the area and then hardly noticeable to the few that can notice it, so damn. This guy is powerful and desperate. Striking up a deal with him sounds like a great idea, this is a job for the one and only, Kokichi Ouma

It quickly becomes obvious that Shuichi doesn't know how powerful he now is, didn't even know his friend was a dragon before the fated day (the chase either happens really fast or over the course of several months, I am leaning towards the latter because I want him to be over the initial shock and mourning + running out of places to turn to so he doesn't have better ideas than accepting Ouma's help)

So Kokichi has the opportunity of a lifetime to put a really powerful magic user in his debt and takes it. "Sure, I'll protect you and teach you to use dragon magic, you'll just owe me a favor"

Unfortunately for his devilish plan to employ Shuichi on the biggest heist yet, when the time to claim the favor comes he wants something else much more (kiss kiss fall in love, he has to ask him out instead or maybe, maybe "stay")

returntozero: I'm also curious to know if Kokichi thinks Shuichi also is part dragon/has some dragon lineage since this stuff is typically not shared with humans and there may also be a barrier to entry with humans just not taking well to draconic magic anyways.

that could be a funny misunderstanding, and technically he could interpret Shuichi's lack of knowledge on the topic as him being another orphan with even less fortunate circumstances, hmmm

and since he doesn't do well with sensitive topics like that he just leaves it be, and he doesn't ask him to reveal his dragon form when he still has to be in hiding, because no matter how curious he is that's a risk he knows not to take

so he'd learn really late if he didn't know from the get-go, I mean late like at the very end, when it's already safe and he asked Shuichi to stay with him and they can relax so he asks him to go flying together

As Shuichi Saihara, heir to the prestigious Everglot Estate, prepares to enter another arranged marriage, he is visited by his childhood friend and previous betrothed, Lady Kaede, who just so happens to be dead. With the help of old and new friends, Shuichi must discover the truth behind Kaede's death so that she can finally complete her unfinished business and move on to the Beyond, but he is also wrestling with some unfinished business of his own...

A Saimatsu-Centric Angst & Romance (with optional happy ending in a bonus epilogue) in a Corpse Bride-inspired AU also featuring some Momoharu and Shuichi, Kaede, Kaito, & Maki friendship. Other DRV3 characters (i.e. Rantaro, Kokichi, Gonta, Tenko, Himiko, Kirumi, Tsumugi, and Angie) make cameo appearances. Never get over the fact that apparently Rise Donnie somehow has a shovel on hand and is almost fully prepared to bury a body. Like I'd just seen the scene where Splinter's hurt and his kids are like freaking out and Leo's like-

"Dad-! Are you okay???"

And Splinter being a beautiful smartass is like-

"Do I look like I'm okay??? No! I'm not okay!"

And fucking out of nowhere Donnie just comes up and starts to try and bury Splinter and Splinter's like-

"I'm not dead-!!"

To which Donnie responds with putting more dirt on his father and saying in the most dramatic way possible-

"You shall be missed papa."

Like that straight up made me fucking cackle like a witch like jfc that had no right to be that fucking funny. Like that whole scene reminded me of the anime Inuyasha where Inuyasha and Lady Kaede where fighting and she'd ended up getting hurt and this half demon thought she was dead so he digs her a hole and starts to bury her only for her to go-

"I'm not dying Inuyasha. I'm just resting."

And he just continues to bury her with the excuse of-

"Oh well this will keep you warm and hidden then till I come back for you, old hag."

Like that's the energy I'd gotten from Donnie in that moment and it made me lowkey lose it lmfao.

it took many hours of research (thank you yokai.com and the myths and folklore wiki) and many decisions based on bullshit, but! I now have a finished (sorta) cryptid au chart to go on. More descriptions/explainations below the cut:

**EDIT: Some people raised concerns about cultural appropriation, so I’ve changed Maki to Bloody Mary! I apologize for the lack of research on my end!

Shuichi Saihara - Apprentice Grim Reaper

If Ultimate Lucky Student equals human, then Ultimate Detective equals Death. My working theory is that Shuichi was intended to be Class 79’s resident human, but died on his way to the school and was then taken in by Kyoko as an apprentice.

**Maki Harukawa - Bloody Mary

Specifically the version where she was falsely accused of killing a bunch of kids and then burned alive for it. Now she kills, but only when summoned. Kind of like an assassin!

Kaito Momota - Krampus/Goatman

Kaito really wanted to be viewed like Santa and instead he’s viewed as like. Evil Santa. And he’s sad about it. Also he has a bridge, though I imagine he’d be pretty gung-ho about dancing on it. (I don’t have a good explanation for this either. it’s just vibes.)

Himiko Yumeno - Baba Yaga

More like Baby Yaga, am I right??? I was just going to make her witch, but that’s booooring. I’m probably never going to draw like, Old Lady Himiko, though. Maybe she was just too lazy to age normally.

Tsumugi Shirogane - Lizardperson (Chameleon)

She’s totally plain and normal! Don’t look too closely! You definitely won’t find anything! What is this AU, if not a bunch of monsters cosplaying as humans. And what cryptid would be the best for that, if not a lizard person. As for the chameleon, i like the aesthetic more than just regular lizard face.

K1-B0 - Automaton

Yes, it’s lazy. (Though he’s also in contention for Class Human, specifically so he can claim to be a robot. Because his whole childhood he was gaslit by his “creator” into being told he was a robot. And this is the first school where people hear that and go “yup, that checks out!”)

Gonta Gokuhara - Boogeyman

I really screwed myself over by making Taka Mothman, but I just love that idea too deeply to change it. So, where’d I get the Boogeyman? Well, if we operate under the Oogie Boogie man from The Nightmare Before Christmas, the Boogeyman is basically a sentient pillowcase full of bugs! Sounds good enough to me!

Miu Iruma - Nymph (Dionysian)

Again, I really screwed myself over by using all the horny monsters up on other characters, but I think this works! Dionysian Nymphs are particularly frisky and have a propensity for partying and vulgarity, but maybe the booze will knock a good idea loose every once and a while.

Rantaro Amami - Kelpie

Green hair??? Seaweed??? Hatred of cars??? I got nothing, we really haven’t/didn’t see that much of that boy. This is subject to change of his talent is revealed, in which case kelpie status will probably transfer to Tenko. He’s listed as a possible Class Human because he could be the Lucky Student? But it’s unlikely.

Kokichi Oma - Eldritch Horror

I’m not convinced he’s not an Eldritch Horror in canon, tbh.

Kaede Akamatsu - Sylph

I search high and low, yet found no piano cryptids. So I went with Sylph because they’re air spirits, sometimes depicted as hummingbirds (music theme!) Plus, Kaede can be a little airheaded sometimes.

Ryoma Hoshi - Kappa

This was mostly vibes + I drew a doodle of Ryoma with a Lotad-esc lily pad head and fell in love. Plus, uh, drowning is an essential part of both Ryoma and kappas. Dude would probably be the chillest kappa in existence though.

Kirumi Tojo - Jorōgumo

There’s a lot of Kirumi spider imagery. This seems like a shoo-in.

Angie Yonaga - Living Painting

okay this is mostly just me being on an Ib kick, but it would explain why she’s always smiling. Bonus: Atua was/is the name of her painter.

Tenko Chabashira - Yeti

I…I got nothing for this. I ran out of man-hating monsters, and I wanted something that could beat the shit out of you. It was this or a Chimera. I dunno.

Korekiyo Shinguji - Naga

I only know this because of his FTEs Korekiyo compares himself to Medusa at one point and says it’s his favorite folktale. Unfortunately, gorgon has already been claimed by Miss Celestia Ludenburg, but luckily we can still get that snake monster symbolism. Mask is to cover up that unhinging jaw probably. (Also let’s just say that he isn’t dating his sister for this AU, yeah? I don’t want to deal with that.)

Also, some adjustments to earlier cryptids:

Toko Fukawa/Genocide Jack: Some people raised concerns that having any sort of cryptid that “played off” Genocide Jack could be considered offensive to those with DID or MPD, so I changed it. And honestly? The Kuchisake-onna works so much better. Woman who’s insecure about her body image and carries around a giant pair of scissors?? If that’s not Toko, I don’t know what is!

Mukuro Ikusaba: I love Mukuro, but I felt like the Waheela was just sort of me grasping for any sort of wolf symbolism, and it didn’t really work. Now she’s an incredibly intimidating curse demon who can control the weather! Much better.

Junko Enoshima: I think she was technically a Wraith before?? but Lich just seemed more fitting. She’s every DND campaign’s BBG.

Inextricably Knotted (an Inukag + Jane Eyre AU) [Chapter 1]

Summary: Kagome Higurashi was orphaned as a baby and raised by her cruel aunt until the age of ten, after which she went to school and learned the art of service and self-suppression. Now eighteen, Kagome takes a job as the governess of Shippo, the young ward of the great and mysterious Lord Inuyasha Taisho.

But as Kagome gets to know her bemusing master, a ghost seems to haunt his estate, hinting that there is a long-lost secret hiding on the third floor.

Chapter 1: Arrival

Many would call Kagome Higurashi strange for choosing to walk the final half mile of her journey to Jidai-Ju Hall. These people, however, would be mistaken; given the comparative barrenness of her previous station’s ethos and locale, Kagome would be strange not to take full advantage of the fresh, crisp air and mystical scenery of the woodland road that led her to her new situation.

Her boots were supported by soft earth, its pliancy a pleasant change from the harsh bump and jostle of the rickety carriage. The golden leaves were beginning to lose their vibrancy and grip. Her bags having been left in the carriage for separate arrival, her unburdened hands sought any falling leaves that came close enough to reach. After catching one, Kagome would hold and chafe it until the next floated down and offered itself as a replacement.

Passing by a small pond, Kagome felt her steps falter. Its still water appeared solid black in its autumnal decay, but it’s surface broke with acute rings wherever a secret fish, tadpole, or fly disturbed it. She knelt as close as she could, the forsaken road only a couple of yards behind her now, and pulled her small sketchbook from her satchel. The pencil was nearly exhausted, but it persisted long enough for a crude sketch of the scene to concretize on the page.

Continuing her way, Kagome juxtaposed it in her mind with the only other pond she knew—the similarly blighted one from her aunt’s home, which had frightened her so strongly she would never walk by it alone if she could help it. She supposed she had her cousin to thank for that particular superstition, his snarling caution of water monsters having enraptured her young mind with ease.

But Kagome was no longer a little girl; she knew better now. She had learned in the decade since that a pond’s most frightening monster was almost always only a snake, and if not that, then it was your own reflection that peered wickedly back at you.

When the thicket finally broke, it was nearly dusk. But Kagome did not notice; her attention instead fell onto the grand wonder of Jidai-Ju Manor, which stood atop a strong hill and stretched its aged stones tall and wide. Faint glimmerings within the windows were the only signs of life. It was beautiful, and frightening. Her pulse livened, and she trudged up the long set of steps leading to what the house’s symmetry declared was the main entrance. The door doubled her height. It had no windows—only a large, bronze door knocker shaped in the image of a dog. She gripped and clapped it against the wood three loud times.

A moment later, the door opened slowly to reveal an old woman in common but stately dress. She was shorter than Kagome, round about the middle, and grayed. But sweetness softened her otherwise decrepit appearance.

She spoke first, her voice raspy: “Good evening. You must be Miss Higurashi. Please, do come in. I am Kaede.”

Kagome obeyed. “Thank you, ma’am. It’s a pleasure to meet you. My things have already arrived, I hope?”

“Yes—they’ve been transported to your room already.”

“Thank you very much, Lady Kaede.”

Kagome tried to keep her wandering gaze subtle, but she couldn’t help the awe that had taken hold of her expression. The entryway alone stunned her for its vintage furnishings and ancient architecture. The question left her lips without her consent: “How old is this house?”

Her host chuckled at her obvious appreciation. “This manor was built nearly two hundred years ago. The property, however, has been in the possession of the Taisho family for over five hundred.”

“Five hundred!” Kagome encored in disbelief. “This country hasn’t even been founded for that long. Stranger still, I’ve never heard of the Taisho family.”

“Oh, they are indeed older than the country itself. But I’m afraid theirs is a waning glory; only one member is left living: our own master Inuyasha.”

“How can that be?”

“Well, I’m sure you know of the hostility our previous two Kings had with the demonic lords, starting with King Byron III’s coronation a century ago. The Taisho clan fortunately managed to defeat any of the king’s knights who tried taking the estate, but the conflict revealed fractures within the family, and many were scattered as a result; other carriers of the bloodline likely exist, but they were cut off from the family as punishment for their desertion, or so the story goes. Only the family’s primary vein remained after the initial dispute settled and the king stopped sending knights: Lord Touga, his Lady wife, and their son, Lord Sesshomaru. They were a proud family,” Kaede paused to unlock the door they’d reached—that of Kagome’s quarters, she guessed. The woman continued, “But pride, you know, is not a replacement for happiness. The patriarch did something unheard of in the Taisho family: about four decades after the family’s scattering, he fell in love with a human mistress and sired a bastard son.”

Half distracted by the story, the room still managed to surprise Kagome with its simplicity. But it was lovely nonetheless; a fire crackled in the fireplace, and the bed was prepared with clean sheets.

Kaede concluded, “Around that time, which was about sixty years ago, my own mother was the manager here. But the family charged her with strict secrecy, even to her own daughter. And you never gamble against the hearing of dog demons!” she joked, though Kagome found her words anything but funny.

She went on: “The result is that I’ve no knowledge of the details of the affair or its subsequent conflicts, or even the fate of Lord Inuyasha’s mother. But I am familiar with the conflicts of the last four decades since my becoming the manager—the largest ones being what happened about twenty five years ago when King Byron IV came to power: in a fit of trying to accomplish what his father failed to, the king charged Lord Taisho with rebellious conspiracy—an accusation whose accuracy I cannot judge even now—and he was executed. A few years later, a little before the king’s assassination, Lord Sesshomaru received the same fate after failing to convince the royal family of his allegiance.

“The property came to Lord Inuyasha—who was not even living at Jidai-Ju at the time—despite his illegitimacy. Lord Taisho’s wife had already left the estate by then; the property would have come to her, but she had settled a deal with Lord Taisho in which she forsook all rights of wifehood for the sake of emancipation. The pair had not been happy for ages, as you could have guessed.”

“Why was Lord Inuyasha spared from the king’s suspicion?” asked Kagome.

Kaede’s look grew grim. “That is something that I’ve never had the courage to ask. I have my hypothesis—but it would be out of my place to suggest it.”

Kagome’s head reeled from the information. Having never before seen a demon, she tried to imagine what each character in the tale looked like—but to no avail. What are the characteristics of a dog demon? They seem to live quite lengthy lives, but if Lord Inuyasha is half human, what is his appearance at sixty years of age?

But more than anything, Kagome wondered about his character. What sort of master has she obtained? She sought Kaede for comfort: “And how do you feel about him—Lord Inuyasha? What sort of master is he?”

“Oh, I’m perfectly content with his ownership. He is much less severe than Lord Sesshomaru would have been, at least. He is hardly here at all, in the first place; indeed, it may be months before you meet him. When he is here, he has his fits of ferocity, but that is to be expected. I’m sure I don’t have to explain why.”

Kagome did, in fact, wish that she would explain why, but she thought her divulging had already been generous enough. Instead, she changed the conversation to a different vein of curiosity. “When am I to meet my pupil?”

Kaede seemed to purge herself of her own distracted mind. “Ah, yes—he has already been put to bed for tonight. You can meet him in the morning. You can also choose to begin instruction whenever you see fit.”

“I would prefer to begin as soon as possible, Lady Kaede—for my residence in this beautiful home would feel unjust without my prerequisite service.”

Lady Kaede smiled. “Very well, then.”

Following an episode of small talk, the old woman left Kagome to herself to settle for bed. She had few things to unpack; the drawers still wanted for filling, and the vanity housed only a horsehair brush, a couple of simple brooches, and even simpler hairpins.

By the time Kagome settled beneath the sheets, the night had fully come, and with it came the realization of her own exhaustion. Her body settled in a tight ball, the fire having not yet heated the room enough for comfort, and she began to drift off.

As sleep began to grip her, the faint sound of creaking wood above went unnoticed, as did a distant voice whose murmurings were too soft and far to distinguish it from mere whispers of the wind.

“There was a priest at my execution. I don’t know if it was him or not and frankly I don’t care to remember! I have mixed opinions about religion- if god is real then…why did he let my parents almost kill me. Why did he let dad corner me in my room at night- let me feel so violated and empty inside when he took what he shouldn’t have” Himari let out a broken sigh as tears rolled down her eyes. “Why would god allow a screwup like me to continue breathing every day when I’ve broken every damn commandment in the holy book!”

“I went to the church a few times- I know Rinko did to. I was left alone thankfully when I went however Rinko wasn’t so lucky apparently- this man had to step in to stop someone from fighting her? Something about how she got a man hanged. If it’s about the man who kidnapped her and Roka I’m going to raise hell. We haven’t attended since the incident- not like I feel safe going regardless”

“I have met this one girl- you see…there was this little old lady who I often visit when I’m in Ginza. Well- I know I shouldn’t have fucking stepped in when some punk boy was giving her trouble! Little fucker busted my lip open…but when he saw this little girl he fucking screamed. She didn’t even do anything! He seemed so scared of her…honestly I’ve been there before. People used to be scared of me when I was her age- probably cause of the rap sheet I had”

“Ah- it’s him” Himari sighs “I keep begging PROFILE to take down the pages dedicated to the murder of Kaede. The theories and the ideas about what happened get to my head- there’s even a few pages saying that I killed Kanade Alarie! Kids still fucking alive last time I checked”

Oki Tengan

“Fuck you, fuck your family, fuck everything you ever loved. EAT SHIT AND LIVE YOU BITCH!”

Last Judgment

“Death- that’s where you’re judged for the final time. There’s no escaping it- your only prolong the inevitable.”

“I don’t particularly have any feelings towards Masa or Eiji- though I’m particularly excited about being able to kick Oki’s ass”

Quick thought about old female characters in Valkyrie Connect

While playing Noel The Mortal Fate, I came across this incredible old woman character named Coffin Neris.

I love her so much that she makes me think about middle-aged+ female characters in the media.

I scratched my head and came up with the following short list of old lady characters I've known and liked.

Queen Clarisse Renaldi from The Princess Diaries

Professor Minerva McGonagall from Harry Potter

All The Golden Girls main characters

Gramma Tala from Moana

Gabai Granny from Saga no Gabai Baachan

Mamá Coco from Coco

Kaede from Inuyasha

Yubaba from Spirited Away

Witch of the Waste and Madam Suliman from Howl's Moving Castle

Mrs. Orange from Okami

Cologne from Ranma 1/2

Chiyo from Naruto Shippuden

Pinako Rockbell from Fullmetal Alchemist

Torogai from Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit

Now let's see how many old women there are in my forever obsession, Valkyrie Connect.

Despite their youthful appearance, Ipsum and Mimir appear to be the only 2 characters who, in my opinion, can fit into the category (I do not count in the collab characters, only the original characters). One claims to be "the eldest elf alive," and both are acquainted with Bor and existed before Lord Odin was born.

Some notable female characters who may be mature but have not reached the age that can be considered truly old - the criteria I'm looking for, are:

Skadi, Freya, Frigg, Vili, Lodur, Jord, Gefion, Yvette, Crimi, Melveryn...

As for Eostre, a divine beast, I'm not sure how old she is.

So, now that I think about it, I'm kind of disappointed, first because of the lack of in-game old female characters, and secondly because the game's designers lacked the courage to depict them with accurate ages, despite the male counterparts aging gracefully:

I'd like to see more depictions of older female characters in Valkyrie Connect (and in other games as well). Aging isn't a bad thing; it's a natural process. There are already far too many young attractive girls in the game. Why not spice things up a little? Not that it will affect the sales because I believe most players are only concerned with their abilities (auto skills, passive skills) to fight in the Arena and Connect Battles.

With these thoughts in mind, I'm considering submitting one or two old female characters to the Hero Creation Competition next year.

22. fulsome

Aymeric forced himself to stop pacing as he heard his front door open, Marcelloix’s voice barely audible as he spoke to their guest. The past few days he had begun to doubt his sanity, both for inviting Kaede to dinner on such short notice, and for forcing himself to wait even a sennight – but now that she was here, calm settled over him, much like the anticipation before battle gave way to focus.

Whatever he had pictured, in the nights since her acceptance of his invitation – and were he honest with himself, the moons of idle fantasy before that – left him wholly unprepared for the reality. Out of her everpresent armor, having been divested even of her heavy wool cloak, he was caught by just how small she was. The mantle of Warrior of Light had been clearly set aside for the night, and before him was merely Kaede. Instead of mithril and adamantite, she was ivory and gold and blue velvet, standing in his foyer as if she had belonged there all along.

Words uncounted jumped into his throat and he swallowed them down, an old adage from his boyhood etiquette lessons ringing in his mind – a gentleman keeps his compliments brief, lest a lady think him fulsome and insincere – opting instead to bow slightly in her direction. “Thank you for coming, my friend. You look lovely – Ishgardian fashion suits you quite well.”

‘Twas the truth, her dress was modest and familiar in design, save a few unusual alterations. Though high-necked and long-sleeved against the cold, cutouts revealed the ivory skin of her shoulders and decolletage, and through both he caught glimpses of scales on upper arm and breastbone that he’d had no idea were there.

A small amount of tension melted out of her shoulders as she smoothed her hands over her skirt. “Thank you. I wasn’t really sure what to wear – can you believe Emmanellain tried to give me one of his coats? Tataru about had a conniption over it, and dragged me to a dress shop immediately.”

Aymeric chuckled at the idea of Kaede fair drowning in an alpine coat and shook his head. “I can believe it, in fact. Thank Halone for Mistress Tataru’s timely intervention.” He held out his hand, and smiled at the lack of hesitation when she placed hers in it, privately noting the contrast between the softness of back of her hand and the callouses on her palm as he escorted her towards the dining room.

“You don’t look half bad yourself, Lord Commander. It’s nice to see you out of your armor, for a change – I was beginning to doubt that you owned anything else.”

He raised an eyebrow as he glanced down at her, matching the teasing look on her face with his own. “Likewise. Fury willing, with the war ended, we may yet be afforded the time to explore other sartorial choices. Among other things.”

Her expression softened, smile fading from amused to thoughtful, but no less beautiful for it. “Like drinks with dear friends?”

Before he could resist the urge, he squeezed her hand in his own, and then released it. “Just so, my lady.”

TL Note: Bugles are a kind of flower, sometimes considered a weed. This specific species, Ajuga decumbens ("kiransou" in Japanese), is not well known outside Asia.

After four Huge Nests suddenly appear near the island of Izu Oshima, the Gardens of Tokyo decide to secretly assemble an "Oshima Offshore Nest Investigation Team" to simultaneously destroy the Nests and investigate a closed GEHENA research facility on Oshima, which they suspect relates to the recent sightings of abnormal Huge in the Tokyo area.
