Try again

Authors notes: Grian accidentally triggers a flashback. Scar tries again. Scarian if you squint. Inspired by a moment in recent hermitcraft episodes. I also want to give a bit of a shout out to @oliander who wrote something with this idea first, which was what inspired me to try my hand at writing my own take on the concept so you should go read their take on the concept too.

Grian had genuinely only meant for it to be a mild prank, testing Scar's mlg water bucket skills. He didn't know how Etho had killed Scar in Last Life, or at least he didn't know how much it impacted him. He didn't know how helpless Scar had felt. It wasn't until it was too late. Grian had already pillared up, already managed to hook his friend with the fishing rod when he heard Scar shakily say "I-I'm getting flash backs to Last Life."

That stopped him, but at that point it was too late to actually stop it. The elf was hoist into the air by the fishing rod, fumbling his water bucket, he landed ungracefully and took a fair amount of damage in the process. Grian swiftly dropped down to meet him.

"Scar! Oh no, I'm so sorry, I didn't- it's ok, we're on hermitcraft, we're ok." Grian hugged the stunned and panicky elf close, not knowing what else to do. They stayed like that for a long moment, Grian hugging him close and Scar clinging to him in turn as he steadied himself. Eventually, Scar speaks up, his voice still shaky but with an edge of determination to it.

"Grian?" the man in question lifts his head in response "can we try that again?"

"What?"

"I want to try again." Grian gets the unspoken message there. Scar wants to try again, wants to prove - not to Grian, but to himself - that he can do this, that he can catch himself. "You're sure?" Grian asks, wanting to make sure his friend is really sure about this idea, giving him a chance to reconsider if he needs to.

Scar nods. "I trust you."

Grian nods in return, steadying his own resolve. Scar trusts him, and he trusts Scar, so if Scar wants to try again then he will oblige. He ascends the pillar again and readies his fishing rod. He doesn't miss the fact that the elf as removed his boots. Without his boots, if he fumbles with his water bucket he will almost certainly die. He's really going for it.

Grian hooks him with the fishing rod again and swiftly hoisting him high into the air. As he soars, Grian is able to catch a brief glimpse of Scar's expression, this time not so much panicked but instead, resolute. Scar begins to plummet back towards the hard ground below, readying his water bucket and-

A perfect landing, Scar flawlessly breaks his fall with the water, not taking a single bit of damage. Grian cheers loudly, quickly swooping down to pull his friend into a tight hug. Scar is clearly still a bit shaky, but he's smiling and letting out slightly relieved laughter.

"You alright?"

"Yeah... yeah, I will be. I feel a bit better now, honestly. Thank you."

"Hey, of course, you don't need to thank me."

"Well I'm doing it anyway!"

Grian chuckles, "fine fine then, you're welcome I guess."

An Apathetic Expression

It’s easy for me to believe in spirit guides. As a child I used to travel places in my dreams. I liked animals. I liked animals because I had already seen the terrible things people could do. I was afraid of people from the begining. From the beginning. As a child I used to travel places in my dreams. Far off places. And in the back yard I spun in circles singing french nursery rhymes, I didn’t know french. I was raised speaking only English.

I knew the oliander bush was poison.

When I learned to write I had endless words. I tried to get them to understand me, But no one was listening. I don’t know if you know What it feels like to live your life with words stuck to the tip of your tongue. Try to learn every word, Every language, But there is no word to express what you feel.

A void grows within, And suddenly you’re trying to fill it, With friends, With boys, With kisses, With black. Maybe if you wear enough black, You can pretend it doesn’t exist. When again it fails you, And you begin to devour yourself: The only thing that would help was words.

You start looking again. The books tell you you’re normal, That these things happen. But all you could think was Keroac was a drunk, Hemmingway killed himself, And Rimbaud lives in your mind, Waiting to tell you something, On the tip of his tongue.

As a child I knew the oliander was poisonous.

au where during the grumbot arc while mumbo was away, scar stepped up to help grian take care of the robot and despite being bad with machinery, grian taught him and scar was always super careful and cared for grumbot like a son

when mumbo came back scar didnt step down from that role, but mumbo stepped up to it so grumbot was left with three dads

as a bonus bit, scar and grumbot would talk about when scar was mayor
