In Spectacular Spider-Man #72 a kid who who imitates Doc Ock breaks into a toy store. The art by Ed Hannigan is amazingly detailed. The toys in the closeup are Gi Joe and ROM Spaceknight, two toys with licensed Marvel comics at the time.
Tumblr media
There's a scene where the kid octopus goes by a graveyard full of dead comic characters. I thought for sure this was foreshadowing his inevitable death, but he survives the story and would go on to make several appearances over the decades.

Every time I see spider-deku I think “I wonder if he’ll deal with alternate Spider-Man’s”
Like imagine he meets spiderman from earth-616 or if he met miles morales. Bro meeting fuckin Maxine Stacy or Oliver "Ollie" Osnick. Having to deal with bitches like Miguel O'Hara or Patton Parnel
On the other hand… meeting cannon deku would be crazy too lmao

Steel Spider / Spider-Kid / Oliver "Ollie" Osnick
Marvel, created by Bill Manto and Ed Hannigan
The Spectacular Spider-Man #72 (Nov 1982)
A former kid genius who idolized Doctor Octopus and, later, Spider-Man, developing advanced exosuits he'd later repurpose as an adult superhero.
Gadgets: Bulletproof costume / Mechanical climbing legs / Grappling hook launcher / Pepper spray blaster
Talents: Proficient engineer and inventor
Fun fact: He was once involved in a superhero team comprised of Frog-Man, the Toad, and himself, titled "the Misfits"

What are the Odds?!
Okay, so I have to talk about this. I’m still a little new to the Spider-fandom, but I have to share this one thing that I went through today.
I’m currently in the middle of a Spectacular Spiderman fanfiction and I’m sort of in the process of creating my own OC. Basic summary, it’s a little kid who shares Peter’s powers. I gave him all the abilities of Spiderman and named him Oliver because I like the name. I designed his outfit with a color combination of orange, black, and white (he looks like a spiderfied Nemo and super cute). When I was thinking of names for his spider persona, I latched on to the name Webby.
It's cute and gender-neutral, and I imagined a scene where someone asks him if he was a boy or a girl, and Webby, being Webby, decided to play on this angle. “Would it matter either way?” And it worked because the nuance made him rapidly popular to both boys and girls, which he loved.
But just to be sure this name hadn’t been taken canonically already, I turned to Google and used the key words “Spider Man Webby”.
Guess.
What.
I.
Found.
Webby has already been taken, although it’s officially spelled Webbie. But oh, it gets better. This character’s secret identity name is called “Oliver Osnick”.
Tumblr media
Just to clarify, I HAD NO IDEA THIS CHARACTER EXISTED! I was just having fun! And I want to use my character, but I don’t want to change the way I wrote him. He’s fun and cute just the way he is.
And then I did more research on the real Webbie and I hate him!
I was able to make myself feel a little better about it because we all know Spectacular Spider-Man kind of does they’re own thing in way of origin stories, also alternate dimensions are a thing, so I regained a bit of confidence with that knowledge. But still, the Google images did plenty of work trying to discourage me. It seems this character isn’t minor enough to have been overlooked by television though and the other animated shows were eager enough to pick him up. Admittedly, I haven’t fully watched Marvel’s Spider-Man 2017 because I couldn’t get passed the first two episodes. Peter is literally the WORST thing about the cartoon. How does it have three seasons and Spectacular Spiderman got only 22 episodes? What the hell TV gods?! And Ultimate Spider-Man isn’t much better. The animation is such an eyesore.
I guess it’s true what they say: there’s nothing a ship hates more than the cannon!

the iron spider costume always reminds me of the steel spider, oliver osnick who once idolized doctor octopus but then realized he was a jerk and modeled himself after spider-man instead

anyway, his last appearance in the main universe is in civil war where he’s imprisoned in the negative zone concentration camp “prison 42.” I have no idea what happened to him and it haunts me

In the end, though, they hook up with Spider-Kid and wind up making their own group, to which Pete gives a few possible names.

The funniest part of making up fan spiderverses is that there are already so many obscure nooks and crannies in canon that sometimes it looks like you stole ideas from places you never even thought to look. I went into creating Oliver going "this is my totally original self-insert Ollie who has doc ock arms and wants to be spider-man, DO NOT STEAL" and then months later found out that Ollie Osnick has been a 616'verse character since 1982

If you can't tell, this is is a revamp of my first story, now with more characters! This time, I will not be accepting reader input for characters (other than aliases, ages, and the team name), or origin details, but I will be open to trope suggestions. Feel free to suggest those! Also, the format is different, lots of time has passed, so I know what I'm doing a little more.
