What’s in a Name?
The Modern-Day AU Musketeers story is finally done. Rather than clutter people’s reading experience with an exploration of the names I chose, I’m putting that here.
Read on for onomastic ramblings...
Oliver Montague is Athos. The root? Oliver is the English version of Olivier, which the BBC ran with as his proper name – Athos being his self-chosen nom de guerre. The character of Athos was, in all likelihood, based on the real life nobleman Armand de Sillègue d’Athos d’Autevielle. Athos-Aspis is a commune in south-west France, and he appears to have taken his name from the small hamlet there. Athos is also a mountain range and peninsula in Greece, and so I decided to give Oliver his surname based on the idea of a mountain. He was originally going to be Montagne, and I changed that at the last minute to the more commonly English surname of Montague.
Henry Darian is Aramis. The root again comes from the real-life inspiration behind Dumas’s character: Henri d’Aramitz. The first name was easy: Henry is the English version of Henri. Darian comes from me researching surnames that would sound similar to d’Aramitz, partly, I confess, so that there would be a reason not to call him Harry. Darian as a name seems to have a woolly and internationally flavoured set of potential origins, with the strongest contenders being English and Persian. I figured that ambiguity (and connections with kings and emperors) would suit our modern Aramis very well.
Isaac Bellegarde is Porthos. The source of his name is (and @thelaithlyworm guessed it before he even turned up): the real-life inspiration for Dumas’s character – Isaac de Porthau (very much not a commoner, btw). The surname harked to his BBC fictional father Belgard, my choice cemented when I found out that Bellegarde means “Beautiful Watchtower”. With Constance coding him a Tower in her imaginary game of chess during my take on Through A Glass Darkly, it became the obvious choice. Don’t ask me why I made him a drummer, though. I just have a weakness for both drums and drummers…
D’Artagnan. Ah – I know some of you will have been disappointed not to see more of him; sorry about that. The story was never meant to contain more than tantalising, catalytic glimpses of Charlie Fielding, I’m afraid. Anyway, his name was pretty easy to conjure: Charles is both the fictional character’s given name and that of his real-life counterpart, Charles de Batz de Castelmore d'Artagnan. Now, here’s where it gets a little more complex. D’Artagnan’s character and exploits are said to have been very heavily influenced by those of Dumas’s own father, Thomas-Alexandre Dumas, who was a hot-headed man of mixed race, born to a white nobleman and an enslaved woman of African descent, Marie-Cessette. Sound familiar? Yes – the BBC transplanted that story onto Porthos (though Dumas’s noble, military father gave him a lot more than Belgard gave Porthos)...! “He was the first person of color in the French military to become brigadier general, the first to become divisional general, and the first to become general-in-chief of a French army.” Again – familiar… Anyway, the choice of Charlie’s surname was to be based on Dumas’s (which means: of the field, i.e. essentially originally a peasant name).
Grimaud. Oh, one of these days I’m going to write something absolutely scandalous for Grimaud, but today is not that day. Anyway, Luke was an obvious English replacement for Lucien (though I toyed with Luka), and the origins of the name took me on an interesting journey of etymology – the name is apparently French from a German given name composite of grim (mask) and waldan (to govern). Finding the English surname Walden made me very happy.
Lester Rushford is a reincarnated/ analogous character, but I’m choosing not to reveal his origins; it should all come clear once I’ve written the next part I’m planning (yes, after the War series is done!), but feel free to ask in the meantime, if the suspense is killing you!
Verity Stan stands in for Constance Bonacieux. Again, we were only ever meant to glimpse her, but a) I was starting to get a bit sick of the slew of male voices, and b) I wanted someone from the press to recognise Oliver and try to give him a hard time for it. That person turned out, of course, to be Verity, whose name is also a virtue, naming girls after virtues being a long-standing tradition, this time meaning truth, which I liked as a moniker for a journalist. The Stan comes from one of the many names derived from Constance (and yes: I know the surname has a different route; shhh!)
Charon as Mikey “Sticks” Rivers. Charon, if you didn’t know, is the Final Ferryman in Greek mythology, taking souls across the River Styx to Hades, to go through judgement and end up in the right place. He’s styled by some a psychopomp (i.e. one who transports souls from life to death), but that’s not quite accurate, as they’re already dead and discorporeal by the time they reach him. Other psychopomps include the Archangel Michael, so there was his first name (I toyed with Colin – nah…). In the end, I gave up trying to be too clever and gave him a nickname that sounds like Styx, with Rivers tacked on the end to drive the terrible, terrible pun home.
Adelaide “Del” Barclay is an analogue for Adèle Bessette. There are many names with the same roots as Adèle, including both Adelaide and Heidi. I had this whole complicated backstory where Henry and Del meet in Norway (for some reason, she’s some kind of research scientist in my head, and I’m not going to argue, just nod), where her colleagues have renamed her for a joke, but it was one of the many, many things to get cut. Bessette means “birch”, as does Barclay. I feel bad for having made her a bit of a Disposable Woman trope – just something to hang Henry’s grief off, in other words, but I honestly couldn’t tell you why her story turned up the way it did in my head, and I remain unrepentantly glad that Aramis got to spend nine years with her.
Chris Anaxagoras will remain, like Rushford, a mystery until the next work in this universe is released. If this suspense is far too painful for you, please do ask.

Letting Go
It’s better for Aramis this way, to not give Porthos more than a passing chance to change his mind. Better for Athos, easier for him to accept his friend’s, his brother’s decision without giving him the opportunity to realize he can’t stomach the idea of Aramis leaving. He knows if he sees him again, he won’t be able to keep quiet, won’t be able to stop himself begging Aramis to stay. Yet, even still, there’s a part of him that hopes Aramis will come by one last time before he leaves Paris. A part of him that hopes his brother will saunter up the stairs and into his apartments, hat in hand, smiling as always.

TEAM SIDDIG FOR ATHOS 2k18!
IS THERE ANYTHING HE CAN’T DO?
No, he can do it all. But particularly he could, if the world was just, do Olivier d’Athos, Compte de la Fèrre, cynic, soldier, hard-drinker, broken-hearted bastion of loyalty, duty, and thwarted love.
The problem is how I’ll think about anything else for the rest of my life. This is all i want to think about.

The alumni of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry all share the same sentiments when asked about their time in school- Hogwarts will always be their home. As each of the four houses have paved the path to greatness for many, it’s become time to watch as the next great generation walks the halls.
Will you find yourself in Slytherin, among the ambitious witches and wizards who seek greatness, and have the resourcefulness and cunning in which to make it happen?                           Or will you find yourself in Ravenclaw, among the smartest of the bunch, whose wit and creativity make them a tough rival to be fought?                           If you should be looking for friends, you may find them among the badgers of Hufflepuff, as they are the kindest of them all, their loyalty and patience making them a valuable asset to those who should need them.                           And in the house of Godric Gryffindor dwell the bravest ones we know, and may their daring, nerve, and chivalry help them in their quest.
There are four choices to be made, and none of them easy- but everyone will swear to you that wherever you may find your bed, you’ll find a place among your own.
School Rules;
— All students must be within their respective house dormitories by 9 pm on school nights, and 10 pm on weekends. Males are not permitted entrance to the female dorm rooms. — Sixth and seventh year students are permitted to visit Hogsmeade on the weekend, but said privilege maybe revoked if said students’ grades are non satisfactory. — This verse will only accept students in their sixth and seventh years, between the ages of 16-18. There are also staff positions available for those with older muses. — No double faceclaims, unless you and the other mun want to do a twin-plot-thingy. — Track the tag gv; draco dormiens nunquam titillandus and follow @dracodormiensgv. — Please post a short bio in the tag after acceptance. — K but like. Super lowkey and relaxed group verse, just happens to be set in Hogwarts, ya know? There will be cute little events and stuff, but really just have fun. — Feel free to send in possible wanted connections you’d like to explore, and I’ll make a tag to put them in so anyone interested in joining might want to talk to you about filling them. Also! I’m toying with the idea of making a Discord server for the group. There isn’t one yet, but if I do make one, I’ll be sure to let everyone know.

Athos’s brother is Thomas d’Athos, which means unlike Aramis, whom the show people seemed to decide he only has one name, Athos has to have a first name and Milady and Catherine really should be calling him ‘Olivier’...but then Constance continues to call d’Artagnan ‘d’Artagnan’ even after they got married. So maybe in the show universe these characters are just exceptionally fond of calling their hubbies or could-have-been-hubby by their last names or whatever
