:::Kenny Stancil (Common Dreams)::: Read the full article

Entry 4: Sport Event Bid Analysis for a Global Sport
The process for cities bidding on the Olympic Games has recently undergone changes. Previously, cities interested in hosting the Games had to “put together costly proposals and compete with other cities in a bidding process that ended with a vote by the members of the executive board of the IOC” (Timsit, 2021). Figure 6 shows the bids made by cities from 199 to 2020 under the previous system.
Tumblr media
Figure 6. Summer Olympic Bids 1992-2020. Maennig and Vierhaus. (2017)
The “ability to organise the event, political support, communication and exposure, accountability, bid team composition and relationship marketing” (Maennig & Vierhaus, 2017, p 3086) were some of the factors that were considered in the selection process. The bidding system began to be changed in 2019, due to pressure to change the process (Timsit, 2021). Human rights and environmental conditions are now considered during the selection process, and the overall process now starts earlier and considers public opinion from the prospective host cities (Timsit, 2021). Public opinion has been proven to be integral in a successful bid, with cities such as Munich withdrawing bids due to the lack of public support (Timsit, 2021). The change is the result of withdrawn bids for previous Olympics, economic viability, and venue availability (Maennig & Vierhaus, 2019).
The IOC has a high expectation for professional venues, which has also contributed to the decline in bids (Rowe, 2021). Whilst for some countries the opportunity to invest in infastructure is a selling point of the bid, it is also a consideration that turns many cities away (Burgo & Cromartie, 2018).
Brisbane, Australia, was the most recent city to bid on the Olympics, winning the right to host the 2032 Olymic Games (See Figure 7). The bid estimates that $5 billion will be the cost to the city, and it will become the third Australian city to host the Games after Melbourne 1956 and Sydney 2000 (Larkin, 2021). Roughly $690 million is expected to be allocated into revamping existing venues and building new ones, but the bid also estimates the econmic benefit to be upwards of $17 billion for the Australian Economy (Larkin, 2021).
Tumblr media

The media also play a significant role in the success of an Olympic bid (Burgo & Cromartie, 2018). Bidding cities will often use the media to gain support for the bid, with the media focussing on the benefits, such as infrastructure improvement, and not the risks (Burgo & Cromartie, 2018). This is known as the showcase justification, where the media focusses on the positives such as “[focusing] on key landmarks” (Rowe, 2017). This all contributes to the success of a bidding city.

-the majority of Japanese citizens are against the olyimpics https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/may/17/tokyo-olympics-more-than-80-of-japanese-oppose-hosting-games-poll This is from a 2 month old article so I”m sure the current polling would be even higher
-olympic atheletes have come in and tested positive for covid. They are NOT required to take a vaccine. You know, you think this would be required for an event taking place in a fucking pandemic https://www.forbes.com/sites/alisondurkee/2021/07/19/did-olympic-athletes-need-to-be-vaccinated-no---and-now-more-are-testing-positive-for-covid-19/?sh=586846454db7
- The music composer who was supposed to compose music for the olymics and special olympics has resgined.  Keigo Oyamada, also known as cornelius, has resigned. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-57891364
I have a special gripe with this one because every news article I read attributes this to cases of bullying resurfacing but what he did was ABUSE disabled clasmates and clearly is proud and show no remorce for these actions. bullying is too lenient a word. http://www.japansubculture.com/japans-olympic-composer-tortured-disabled-children-and-the-olympic-committee-says-to-the-world-eat-shit-no-problem/#.YPKTX84AZ_w.twitter a source for the disturbing details of the abuse. trigger waring
-Tokyo government asks olympic staff who got covid vaccine to delay second dose until after olyimcs over so they do not miss work
tweet: https://twitter.com/Mulboyne/status/1417263386258153484
article source: *In japanese and most of it paywall locked* https://www.asahi.com/articles/ASP7M66NRP7HUTIL05P.html
- And most Recently Kobayashi Kentaro,Olympics Opening Director, has resigned after an old sketch of him making a holocaust joke resurfaced
source for resgination: https://twitter.com/motokorich/status/1418040804812070914
information about the incident: https://mainichi.jp/english/articles/20210722/p2a/00m/0na/002000c
- this isn’t nearly as bad as everything else but https://twitter.com/HirokoTabuchi/status/1416812548217835520 Children who were invited (According to this tweet and screen shot of a news article) to be some of the few spectators of the olympics are only allowed to bring in coca cola drinks and if they bring anything else rip the logos off.
just a shit show all together! And this is just what i know of and have read.

Uneasy bedfellows? ‘Boycott’ Statements Show Five Eyes Each Has Its Own Calculations
— Xu Keyue | December 09, 2021 | Global Times
Tumblr media

Aside from the headstrong Morrison government which rushed to the frontline to follow the US' "diplomatic boycott" of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games, other members of the Five Eyes Alliance, though announcing similar decisions, exposed their different calculations in their wordings.
The different and cunning statements by the US allies showed a certain degree of distrust toward the superpower, and revealed their dilemma in trying to retain their diplomatic independence while being coerced by US to follow suit, Chinese observers pointed out.
On Wednesday, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said: "There will be effectively a diplomatic boycott of the Winter Olympics in Beijing. No ministers are expected to attend and no officials." But he noted that "I do not think that sporting boycotts are sensible and that remains the policy of the government," media reported.
Canada followed suit later in the day, also citing human rights concerns.
London, though, showed a basic view of coordination with Washington, and the self-contradictory and vague expression exposed its desire to maintain some degree of independence in their dealings with China, rather than being seen as mere "henchman" of the US, Chinese observers said.
"It appears that London does not completely agree with the US' anti-China policy, but it yielded to coercion of US hegemony together with other members of the Five Eyes Alliance," Chen Hong, a professor and director of the Australian Studies Center at East China Normal University, told the Global Times on Thursday.
The staunchest follower of this "boycott" campaign is Australia. Australia announced on Wednesday a "diplomatic boycott" of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.
Some media and politicians in Australia are constantly fanning the flames, making their sinister intent clear to agitate world hostility toward China. Canberra is most afraid that the US and the rest of the world would get closer with China because the Morrison government has positioned itself against China and it would be left out if relations between China and the rest of the world improve steadily, Chen explained, noting that Australia fears becoming an "abandoned orphan."
Canada too is very pathetic as it has no option but to bow to US pressure, said Chen, noting that it is very sad that as an independent country, it cannot have its own ideas on foreign policy, but reads the script the US writes for it.
Australia, the UK and Canada cited so-called human rights concerns in China, while another member state of the Five Eyes - New Zealand - used the COVID-19 pandemic as the reason for not sending diplomatic representatives at a ministerial level to the Beijing Winter Olympics, noting that the decision was made in October.
The statement by New Zealand was reserved and tactful, Li Haidong, a professor at the Institute of International Relations of the China Foreign Affairs University, said. "Using pandemic as an excuse shows New Zealand wants to save some space for relations between China and New Zealand."
Li said that such nuanced difference between the US "allies" reflected the mistrust of those countries of the US. Once bitten twice shy, those countries' trust has been severely damaged by Trump's selfishness, and they are not sure what the next US administration's policies will be after President Joe Biden steps down.
In response to the absence of the diplomatic representatives from these countries, Wang Wenbin, spokesperson of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, told a press conference on Thursday that it's not worth worrying about the ripple effect.
China has not invited any of the countries concerned, and we will see the success of the Games no matter their officials come or not, Wang said.
Thomas Bach, Chief of the International Olympic Committee, dismissed the "diplomatic boycott," saying that "If we were to start to take political sides, we would never get the 205 or 206 National Olympic Committees to the Games - this would be the politicization of the Olympic Games and this would be the end of the Olympic Games," according to media reports on Wednesday.
On Thursday, French Education and Sports Minister Jean-Michel Blanquer said that France will not join a diplomatic boycott by other Western countries.
As Japan has not decided whether to join the US' political campaign, Wang Wenbin said that China fully supported Japan in hosting the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, noting that "now it is Japan's turn to show due basic faith."
