"The Neukom Vivarium by Mark Dion is a hybrid work of sculpture, architecture, environmental education, and horticulture. This 60-foot-long nurse log, with its ongoing cycles of decay and renewal, represents the complex processes of a natural ecosystem."

The Olympic Sculpture Park Seattle Washington USA
The Olympic Sculpture Park, created and operated by the Seattle Art Museum, is a public park with modern and contemporary sculpture in downtown Seattle, Washington. Here is just a few pictures of the park. Nice place by the water to walk around the sculptures. Afterwards we went to dinner and then the Space Needle.

6 Things.
//
This is one of my favorite shots from Hidden Figures #3 and perhaps the entire series. Normally, you might not want to see a couple of birds photobomb your portrait. But the fact that these were two black crows, joining myself and my fellow black figures - right in a space that was open for them - the shot felt so balanced. The theme of longing for belonging felt reiterated, with blessings from nature itself - even with my moment of civil disobedience, hopping the rope to join the scene. This photo felt so right, so properly timed - something that might be difficult to recreate. And I'm grateful this moment happened.
.
scroll along the blog to weave with me between the steel pieces of Tony Smith's "Wandering Rocks" and the thoughts and feelings behind my necessitation to place myself within it, even for a moment, for this series...

Ruta 30 Día 3: Olympic Sculpture Park, Gas Works Park, Fremont Troll, Starbucks Reserve
Ruta 30 Día 3: Olympic Sculpture Park, Gas Works Park, Fremont Troll, Starbucks Reserve

Day 16
With huge apologies for getting way behind again! This was another touring day, this time from Banff to Calgary.
First official stop (after a bonus stop at the Cascade Gardens that I visited yesterday) was a ride up the Sulphur Mountain gondola for some beautiful views over Banff.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There is smoke haze on the horizon from forest fires in BC.
Tumblr media
A bunch of people on my tour stayed in that huge hotel last night - the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel, just in front of Bow Falls.
Speaking of the falls, that was our next stop and we arrived just as a rafting group was setting of down the rapids.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Adore those water colours!)
We took a drive around to Surprise Corner for views across the river (and the falls) back towards the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel.
Tumblr media
Then a lengthy lunch stop in Banff before getting back on the bus for a drive around the Lake Minnewanka Loop road. (Sorry about the UFOs and reflections off the bus windows in some photos.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And from there it was all highway to Calgary.
I only had the one afternoon to spend in Calgary, so I did the 5 block walk to the Calgary Tower, stopping in front of the Bow Building for this sculpture.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The curvy glass building on the right is the Bow building. The face statue is hidden behind the Hyat's blue roof. The flat brick coloured rectangle building to the right of the Bow is where I stayed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lots of smoke haze on the horizon, but you can see the tower for the ski jump events from the 1988 Winter Olympics!
Tumblr media
View to the Saddledome and Stampede Park, home of the annual Calgary Stampede (rodeo, exhibition, festival), which had been held a few weeks before.
Tumblr media
The Bow River with the Calgary Zoo on the far bank, and Fort Calgary on the near one.
Such a short time to explore here! And if I can, I'd like to come back for the Stampede one day!

Thomas Blinks (1853-1912)
Walter Winans driving a carriage
signed and dated 'TBlinks. 1900.' (lower right)
oil on canvas
Walter Winans (1852-1920), depicted driving a carriage in the present picture, was a polymath and heir to a fortune built on constructing the vast Russian railway network. This gave him the opportunity to indulge his passions for shooting, trotting, painting, sculpting and writing. He was one of the finest shots of his generation, winning two Olympic gold medals and he was also active in the sport of trotting, both as a breeder and as a driver in England and Austria. By the 1880s he owned more sporting rights over Scotland than any other individual. His rented estates stretched from sea to sea, covering more than 200,000 acres. As well as painting highland scenery, many of his sculptures celebrate the heroes of the Wild West and the frontier spirit of his paternal homeland, the United States. He died in 1920 during a trotting race at Parsloe Park, London, aptly just as his horse was crossing the finishing line.

I'm standing on indoor observation level that has the glass revolving floor. I am looking down 500 feet to the ground.
Tumblr media
The Space Needle offers 360-degree views from its three main viewing areas. This picture I took is of Lake Union from the indoor observation deck.
Tumblr media
These two pictures that I took are from the open-air viewing area located at 520 feet. Nice area to get some fresh air, there are also benches that you can sit on here too. The safety plastic gets in the way of taking pictures but they are spaced so you can try to take a picture between them.

Golden hour
Tumblr media
One of the many night views you can see. This one I zoomed in on. We did go on that Seattle Great Wheel which you can see lit up from here. We also spotted the Olympic Sculpture Park, and the hotel that we stayed too. I would recommend visiting some of Seattle sites first and then go up on the Space Needle. It is always fun when you can recognize some of the sites.

Hidden Figures #4 (The Eagle by Alexander Calder) || I.
Tumblr media
I didn't originally plan to interact with Alexander Calder's "Eagle" but as photographer @skyclad.studio and I came upon it and its spot on the hill, the sun was making its way up the hill as well, hitting the sculpture just right and inviting us to it.
.
With one of the goals of 'Hidden Figures' being to challenge myself to interact with a sculpture's scene, using my body to mirror or contrast its shapes, I saw "The Eagle" as a delightful challenge.
.
With its blunt lines and angles and giant-like stature, what could little old me do to stand up to and alongside the monumental sculpture? I took notice of its sharp lines and sought to match or oppose them - show it I could be tall, strong and monumental too.
Tumblr media
But ultimately - I'm a human: I fold and I curl; I wave and I bend. I could show the Eagle that I was strong like it was or I could just flow around it: Show it what it's like to be made of skin and bone. Show it - and remind myself - that one doesn't always have to be biggest presence in the room, make the largest gestures to make an impact. Sometimes it's the little things that make all the difference. Similarly to my interaction with "Wake" by Richard Serra, I let small touches make the biggest impressions: A pointed toe, intentional extensions, arcs and waves stick out like many paintings and figure drawings before me would have their subjects do to add an extra visual interest element to the capture.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Besides, allowing oneself to be its most natural - accepting ones truest state - can allow it to shine like the sun rising up over a hill on a summer morning. And for all the hiding and tucking I did amongst the other scenes in the park, there was wasn't much room to hide around this piece. It was a giant stage for me to show it, show onlookers, show Seattle, show anyone my truest self.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I didn't originally plan to interact with The Eagle, but as many of our random encounters prove over time, it's very possible that the opportunity presented itself for a reason. As many pieces of art do, it has something to show me and I'm grateful it waited patiently for just the right time to beckon us to it and deliver its silent message.

Sunday 9th April, Easter Sunday.
Happy Easter, everybody! 🐣
After a breakfast of boiled eggs and soldiers 😃 we went to the office to pay.
When we came to France in 2017 we gave up our berth at Brixham marina. There was no guarantee that we would get it back in 2 years time. This time we have kept it on as we are away for just 3 months. However, still being bertholders it means we can take part in Passeports Escales. This is a scheme where, if you sign out of your own marina, you can get up to 5 nights per year (a maximum of 2 nights per visit) completely FREE of charge in 160 marinas between Belgium & Morocco, and there’s loads in Brittany. St.Helier was free and the first 2 here will be free too. Nice.
After breakfast we went for a walk around the headland to Solidor.
Tumblr media
The walk was a bit of a climb at first but it soon became a nice flat walk way. Wild and rather quiet, you can see a superb panorama of the sea, Dinard, and also Saint-Malo.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There were some heavy fortifications up here.
The Battle of Saint-Malo was fought between Allied and German forces to control the French coastal town of Saint-Malo during World War II. The battle formed part of the Allied breakout across France and took place between 4 August and 2 September 1944. United States Army units, with the support of Free French and British forces, successfully assaulted the town and defeated its German defenders. The German garrison on a nearby island continued to resist until 2 September.
Saint-Malo was one of the French towns designated as a fortress under the German Atlantic Wall program, and its pre-war defenses were expanded considerably before the Allied landings in Normandy during June 1944. There were several gun emplacements on our walk, and boy, did they take a battering!
Tumblr media
You can see the next one in the distance. Each one heavily pock-marked. Unfortunately, when the Germans withdrew they destroyed so much of the infrastructure that it was impossible for the Allies to use the port.
Our walk took us the Solidor Tower which is a strengthened keep with three linked towers, located in the estuary of the river Rance.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was built between 1369 and 1382 by John V, Duke of Brittany to control access to the Rance at a time when the city of Saint-Malo did not recognize his authority. Over the centuries the tower lost its military interest and became a jail. It is now a museum celebrating Breton sailors exploring Cape Horn.
You can just make out the hydro-electric barrage in the background.
We ventured towards Solidor.
In the small park "Jardin" there is a beautiful sculpture. This is could be easily overlooked as the color of the sculpture doesn't particularly stand out from its surroundings.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It pays homage to Commander Charcot (who it seems was a bit of a ‘Flashheart’ character) and the crew of the Pourquoi-Pas, which disappeared at sea on September 16, 1936. It is a gift from the Republic of Iceland.
Jean-Baptiste Charcot, often called Commander Charcot was born on July 15, 1867 in Neuilly-sur-Seine and died September 16, 1936 at sea (30 miles northwest of Reykjavik), was a doctor, French polar explorer and a French naval officer.
A sportsman, he was French rugby union champion in 1896 and was also a double silver medalist in sailing at the 1900 Summer Olympics.
We continued a few steps into Solidor and took refreshment at one of the very busy hostelries sitting outside in the warm sun looking over the bay. How very pleasant. 😎
We walked back to the boat to prepare our late Easter Sunday lunch of crab and shell-on prawns that we had bought in St.Helier. All washed down with a bottle of rosé. Lovely.
