NaLu 2020 hints compilation

I've been enjoying FT100YQ for the Natsu and Lucy content, but I honestly miss talking about my OTP, so I decided to make a little compilation post to collect all of the NaLu crumbs (*cough*meals really*cough*) we got throughout this year thus far (+add a little bit of my commentary on each one of them)! ^_^

So let’s start with Mashima's Twitter Doodles:

#1:

Posted on January 25, for no particular reason. This is really among NaLu's best Twitter Doodles. The way they're smiling and holding each other is just so precious ♥

#2:

Posted on March 24, aka White Day in Japan! Natsu's giving Lucy a bunny plush as thanks for her chocolates! This one actually references a FT100YQ chapter cover, but we'll get to that later. #3:

Posted on May 23, aka Kiss Day in Japan! It's actually part of a "tutorial" that eventually takes on a "troll" route lol. Fun Fact: Mashima has plenty of official couples he could've drawn for this day, but for some interesting reason he chose to draw NaLu instead. The doodle also just so happens to bless the fandom with an official kissing artwork of their OTP, while still respecting said OTP's current status and developments in the official story (by being a "joke" post).

Apparently there was some kind of promotion on MagaPoke (the app/site that uploads the FT100YQ chapters) a while back - fans could submit requests for art by Mashima, and 3 winners were chosen. This was 1's requested artwork. ♥ There were a lot of NaLu requests apparently!

Now onto FT100YQ content! Which are unfortunately just Chapter Covers lol. (But it can't be helped, the manga's bi-weekly so it's walking at a snail's pace, and Natsu and Lucy are busy fighting separately for the time being. But the covers are really lovely!)

First, we got the cover of Chapter 49:

This one references Valentine's Day! Happy takes the spotlight with his romantic delusions, but in the background we can see Lucy shyly attempting to give Natsu Valentine's chocolate. And from Mashima's White Day Twitter doodle that he posted later on, we can conclude that her attempt was successful, and her feelings were happily accepted and reciprocated. 😉

Then, we got the cover of chapter 53:

JErza takes the spot-light this time, but in the bg we can see NaLu being dorks together. (This actually kind of canonizes Mashima's series of "Hot Spring Vacation" doodles he did back on his Twitter in 2018!) Natsu just can't help messing with Lucy lol, he truly loves being around her and having her attention. And is that.... Σ(ﾟÅﾟ) “May we stay together forever” I read up there?? Used in a romantic setting??? Σ(ﾟДﾟ) I think all NaLu fans know what I’m trying to say lol.

Then we got the cover of chapter 55:

This one references Children's Day in Japan. As you can see, Natsu's playing with Asuka again, and Lucy's looking at him lovingly in the bg. The Asuka omake had some strong NaLu hinting, so it's nice to see Mashima kinda reference it again. Although many may claim that Natsu’s an immature character whose unfit for parenthood, I think he’ll be a great father to his future daughter/children with Lucy. 😉

And lastly, we got the cover of the most recent chapter, chapter 58:

Gray/Gruvia take the spot-light, but in the bg we can see NaLu (and JErza) dancing together. ♥ Although NaLu's the only major pairing where neither side has openly voiced/admitted their feelings yet, Mashima still makes sure to include them in every piece with romantic undertones. The ship got his full support, and FT100YQ hasn’t been shy with romance, so I’m pretty excited to see what he has in store for NaLu. ^_^ ♥

Now onto HERO’s hints. Or rather, HEROINE’s. HERO’s chapters were actually released weekly in 2019, but the volume containing them all came out in 2020, with an extra chapter called “HEROINE’s”.

HEROINE’s had a moment for all of Mashima’s main ships – Haru x Elie from Rave Master, Natsu x Lucy from Fairy Tail and Shiki x Rebecca from Edens Zero.

And well, the moment NaLu had was pretty damn cute, if I do say so myself:

The fact that they’re pranking people together now (or at least attempting to lol) just goes to show how close they’ve become. Natsu’s rubbed quite a bit of his personality on Lucy. And the way he takes care of her each time she’s in trouble (either drunk or passed out) is so damn precious! The smiling, blushing faces they give each other also make me feel all kinds of ways. ♥

And that concludes what we have for now! As you can see, it’s a fair bit of stuff despite them not interacting in the manga for what feels like ages! So I sure hope the fandom keeps looking at the positive side of things, and patiently wait for whatever NaLu’s gonna deliver us next.

Nalu

Lucy asking writing questions on the job drabble (G) Summary: A short drabble based off of that short in FT 100 Years Quest when Natsu takes Lucy on a job to get writing inspiration. In this story, Natsu and Lucy beat up a bunch of bandits while on a job, and Lucy insists on interviewing them, much to Natsu’s confusion.

Morning Routine (G) Summary: A typical morning in the life of the Dragneel family!

Toaster Training (G) Summary: A drabble with Nashi, based off of a hc that Natsu makes toast by heating up a piece of bread between his hands and has Nashi train by doing that.

The Dragon’s Family (T) Summary: It’s Christmas Eve at the Dragneel house and Natsu finds out that he and Lucy’s kids have the wrong idea about the kind of dragon Igneel was from a book they found on dragons. They think he was a killer just like the other dragons 400 years ago, and Natsu can’t say anything to convince them otherwise. Thankfully, Lucy remembers a spell that Wendy told her about that could bring Igneel back to life for just one night.

Worth the Trouble (G) Summary: Drabble based off of Hiro Mashima’s art of nalu hugging and smiling at each other. When Lucy finds Natsu in the aftermath of his destructive tendencies, she’s surprised by what he has to tell her in order to explain the situation...

Be My Valentine? (G) Summary: Set after the Wood God Dragon Aldron Arc. While Happy is debating on whether or not he should accept chocolates from Touka or Carla, Lucy is debating on whether or not she should give Natsu the ones she bought for him. Will Lucy finally be able to tell Natsu how she feels, and will he be able to understand and tell her that he feels the same?

Hoppy White Day! (G) Summary: Natsu needs help finding a gift at the last minute for Lucy on White Day! But once he runs into a little friend that points him in the right direction, everything falls into place.

Get a Good Look (M) Summary: Natsu saw Lucy naked again today. While he’s cooling her off from her hot water she takes off her towel to help herself cool down and the two of them joke about the implications of seeing each other naked so often despite being “just friends”. And Natsu discovers something about his feelings while worrying for his girl. Based off of Hiro Mashima's omake Heroines.

Heating Pad Hands (G) Summary: A drabble based off of someone’s head canon that Lucy moves Natsu’s hand from her waist onto her lower-belly when she’s on her period because his hand is like a heating pad to help relieve her cramps.

Father Material (G) Summary: After seeing how good Natsu is with Asuka, Lucy thinks about how good he would be with other kids, possibly theirs.

First Kiss (G) Summary: Natsu overhears the girls tease Lucy about having never kissed someone before. Since he’s never kissed anyone either, he decides to fix that problem for both of them.

Clarity (T) Summary: After defeating Aldoron, Natsu notices Gray confess his love for Juvia in private, and it makes him think about where his own relationship with Lucy stands. So they have a little chat while she’s healing his wounds.

In Your Dreams (Nalu Day 2020) (G) Summary: While Lucy’s writing a short story to be featured in Sorcerer Weekly she winds up falling asleep and dreaming about the story she wants to write, with her and Natsu as the prominent characters.

Nashi’s First Lesson (G) Summary: Drabble about Natsu fighting in the GMG a few months after Nashi is born and being determined to win this fight since it’s the first one that she’ll see.

Coming back to you (G) Summary: Drabble based on the cover for chapter 63 of the 100 year quest. Lucy finds Natsu after he defeats Aldoron and they have a heartfelt conversation about her worries.

Surprise! (G) Summary: Drabble about Lucy coming up with a way to tell Natsu she’s pregnant. Will he get the message?

Starting a Family (T) Summary: Based off of Chapter 66 of the 100 YQ. After Natsu asks Lucy if they can have a Nasha of their own back in Earthland, Lucy has a conversation with him about what it means to have a family together, and what that means for her and hopes it means for him...

Clothes Make the Man (G) Summary: Lucy is floored when she sees how hot Natsu looks in a suit.

Making Love (E) Part two to Starting a Family Summary: Now that they've found the white wizard, it's time for them to leave Edolas and head off to Elentir. But Edolas Fairy Tail offers to let them spend the night first. But Natsu and Lucy are stuck sharing a room, and there's only one bed. And for some reason Natsu's been acting strange around Lucy. And that night Lucy finds out why and sees a side of the man she loves that she's never seen before. My take on what I think would be cool to have happen after FT 100 YQ chapter 67 but I know it probably won't happen lol.

Wait For It (G) Summary: It will take Lucy awhile to learn what Natsu’s true feelings for her are. But for him, she’s willing to wait for it.

Pocky Day 2020 (G) Summary: It seems that this year Natsu finally learned how to play the pocky game! Sort of.

Willow (T) Summary: During a job with team Natsu, Lucy gets hit in the head and wakes up in a dream where she's a princess who runs away from home to be with her lover, the half-dragon half-human Count Natsu Dragneel.

The Gift She Wants (G) Summary: Natsu writes Lucy a love letter for her birthday.

The Perfect Gift (G) Summary: Lucy says that Natsu can have whatever he wants for his birthday. So Natsu asks for a kiss.

Happiness (G) Summary: Drabble for Nalu Day 2021 based off of the art Hiro Mashima drew. Natsu and Lucy reflect on how happy they are together.

Nalu week 2019

Love on the Road (G) Summary: Natsu and Lucy have their first kiss by accident while on the road home from a job.

Don’t Be a Stranger (G) Summary: Lucy has a run in with a creepy stranger outside of her apartment. But thankfully, someone who can help her out decided to make themselves at home in her apartment.

Lost and Found (G) Summary: Natsu and Happy are taking longer than expected to come back from a job, and Lucy’s getting worried. Eventually though they do make it back to her, and she can’t believe what they found.

A Blessing and a Curse (M) Summary: Natsu and Lucy have their intimate night interrupted by their newborn baby. Turns out having kids is a blessing and a curse.

A Girl Worth (Not) Fighting For (G) Summary: Ever since Natsu and Lucy got together, Lucy’s been wanting to go on a nice normal date at a restaurant. But doing that is becoming quite a problem because Natsu keeps getting kicked out of restaurants for starting fights with people. So Lucy gives him an ultimatum. One more date as a trial, and if he starts a fight with someone, it’s over. Can Natsu put aside his love for fighting for the girl he loves?

Treasure Her (G) Summary: Natsu, Happy and Lucy are walking through Hargeon on their way back from a job and Lucy notices a pretty star shaped necklace in the market. Natsu buys it for her using their food money, much to Happy’s despair. The reason Natsu bought the jewelry for her, surprises her.

The Chance to Have a Family (G) Summary: Lucy gives birth to her and Natsu’s daughter Nashi. Natsu reflects on how he could be so lucky to get the chance to fall in love and become a father.

Bare (E) Summary: Natsu’s seen Lucy naked a dozen times before, and she’s seen him naked on more than one occasion as well. But they’ve never been naked together like this before, they’ve never felt so vulnerable yet so excited at the same time…

Nalu Week 2020

Baby Talk (G) Summary: While spending a stormy afternoon at home, Lucy notices that her husband seems to be very chatty with the baby growing inside of her.

No Regrets? (E) Summary: While camping together one night after a job, Natsu and Lucy have a conversation about things they do and don't regret, and why.

What Flirting? (G) Summary: When Lucy is feeling down about her love life Natsu tries his hand at flirting.

Love Letter (G) Summary: Not knowing how to express her love for Natsu, Lucy Heartfilia puts her heart into her writing and writes a love letter for Natsu. She never meant for him to read it. But he does anyway.

Achoo! (G) Summary: Short drabble about how Nashi sets things on fire when she starts to learn magic.

Charm Necklace (G) Summary: Short drabble. Juvia and Levy got charm necklaces from Gajeel and Gray after a job they went on with Natsu, but did Natsu bring anything for Lucy?

Her Smile (G) Summary: Short drabble. Natsu reflects on how powerful Lucy’s smile is and how it affects him.

Gruvia

Home (Not So) Alone (G) Summary: Juvia leaves to go on a job so Gray has to take care of their son on his own. Leaving him no choice but to fully overcome his fear of connecting with people he care about head on, and embrace fatherhood.

Taking it Seriously (G) Summary: Gruvia Day drabble about them discussing having kids after discovering Levy’s pregnancy.

Goodbye Kiss (G) Summary: Post-canon 100 YQ drabble. After sealing the Wood God Dragon, and freeing Fairy Tail from the White Doctrine and defeating the Dragon Eaters (wow there’s a lot in this arc isn’t there XD), it’s time for Gray and Juvia to part ways once again. But this time before Juvia leaves, Gray gives her the best parting gift she could have ever asked for.

Be My Valentine (E) Summary: Set after the Wood God Dragon Arc. Juvia asks Gray to be her Valentine and to her surprise he accepts, and has another surprise waiting for her back at their hotel that she certainly wasn’t expecting but is nevertheless happy about.

Boiling Love (G) Summary: When the stove isn’t working one morning, Gray finds a creative way to use Juvia’s power to boil some water.

Perfect (G) Summary: After coming home from training with Storm Gray reflects on how perfect Juvia is with their family.

Raise Me Up (G) Summary: Inspired by Mashima’s Gruvia Day art for 2021, Gray lifts Juvia up on his shoulders to reach an apple and thinks about how she’s lifted him up in the past.

Gruvia Week 2020

A Place to Call Home (G) Summary: Gray finds a nice secluded place in the woods with a house, and he invites Juvia over to check it out.

Waking up to You (G) Summary: Gray has to wake up early to go on a long job. But when he wakes up he can't help but admire his beautiful wife in bed next to him.

You can leave your hat on (M) Summary: Juvia left her hat at Gray's apartment after a quick visit there when they got back from a job. Worried about the rumors that might spread about their relationship if people heard she visited his apartment, he decides to sneak into her room in Fairy Hills to return her missing article of clothing, only to find her in her room without any clothes on at all.

Birthday Cake (G) Summary: Juvia bakes Gray a cake for his birthday, but instead of sugar she may have added something else.

Make You Mine (G) Summary: Yajima opens a new restaurant in Magnolia and the girls work the restaurant as waitresses on opening day. Gray’s a bit jealous of all of the attention Juvia’s getting and becomes even more jealous when an old friend comes by.

I Failed You (T) Summary: Juvia gets injured during a job and Gray feels like it’s his fault.

The Happiest Moment (G) Summary: Gray and Juvia experience one of the happiest moments a couple can have together.

Multi-Ship

Divided by a Common Enemy (Gruvia and Nalu) (G) Summary: Gray and Natsu's rivalry flares up again when Bora comes to Magnolia, and since he's both Juvia's ex and kidnapped Lucy to try to sell her into slavery with a bunch of other girls in the past, the two mages fight over who gets to be the one to fight him on behalf of the girls they secretly love.

The Baby Race Series (M)

Ships: Mostly Nalu and Gruvia, but with background Gajevy and Jerza. If I do more parts then I’ll add more stuff for Gajevy and Jerza if I think of something 😂

Part 1: The Baby Race Summary: The drabble that started it all! Gajeel accepts praise from the older men in the guild on becoming a father. Gajeel takes pride in the fact that he and Levy are one of the first in their generation of Fairy Tail members to have kids, but then he says something that makes a few of the other guys want to pick up the pace in their own relationships…

Part 2: How to Show Her Your Love Summary: The guys all learn how to show their girls they love them! Shouldn’t be too hard, right? While Natsu and Lucy have their first date, Gray takes things further with Juvia 😉

Part 3: The Guy’s Protective Sides Summary: Lucy goes to have brunch at Levy and Gajeel’s place and there’s a lot of gossip about what happened on her date with Natsu. Now that that the guys have confessed and shown their love to the girls, they start to get a little protective when something threatens the ones they love.

Part 4: Home for the Holidays Summary: As everyone’s settling down as the Holiday season comes to Magnolia, the relationships develop further. Gray and Juvia’s wedding is just around the corner, Levy is due to give birth sometime during the month, and Natsu gives Lucy a big surprise!

Part 5: Gray and Juvia’s Wedding Summary: It’s Gray and Juvia’s Wedding Day! And it’s full of love and other surprises!

Learning to Love (Gruvia Stone Age Omake) (M)

Part 1: The Wrath of the Rod Summary: Gray is kidnapped and brought to the female tribe. When he sees Juvia again his “sacred rod” incurs it’s “wrath” quite often.

Part 2: Culture Clash Summary: Juvia brings Gray into her hut, where he'll be living with her, and they quickly notice the differences between males and females.

No More Waiting (Gruvia Week 2021) (M)

Summary: After the 100 Years Quest, Gray’s finally ready to be in a relationship with Juvia. And after pining for each other for so long, things escalate quickly.

One of Our Own

Summary: Lucy wonders what’s it like to have a kid after watching Natsu interact with Asuka on another babysitting job and Natsu might just help her with that.

Pairing: NaLu

Rating: K+ (for minor abuse and suggestive theme)

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Lucy wasn’t quite sure how she had gotten herself into this situation.

Again.

Her day had started perfectly normal to be honest.

She woke up from bed miraculously without Natsu and more often than not Happy in it, she went to her kitchen and made herself some good ol’ bacon and eggs, took a nice and refreshing shower afterwards, went to the guild, and was just chilling there at a bar stool while the guild went on with their usual destructive brawls and loud chattering.

She would have never expected herself to be watching her pink-haired idiot of a best friend slaving himself as a horse to a cute little girl, who was barely the age of 8, as she rode him around the Western styled living room while calling him “Mr. Horsey” out of all things.

“Why was I dragged along into all of this?” The blonde-haired mage sighed as she asked herself the same question for the nth time.

“Because you were worried that Natsu might screw something up and you wanted to make sure he doesn’t for Asuka’s sake.” Happy chimed in beside her before he continued to munch on a fish he got from god knows where.

‘Oh yeah.’ Lucy thought to herself as she let out a groan.

She remembered Alzack and Bisca coming into the guild hall with Asuka and going straight to Natsu, who was then currently duking it out with Gray, and asked him to take care of Asuka for them since Asuka really enjoyed herself the last time Natsu took care of her and the couple had to go on a dangerous job that they can’t take Asuka along for.

Natsu accepted of course, but that got him a hard blow from Gray on the head, but also a beautiful smile from Asuka which was worth it.

Her groan was then answered by a groan from Natsu who then proceeded to slump himself on the floor.

“Hiyah! Hiyah! Come on Mr. Horsey! We won’t finish the race if you slack off like that!” Asuka commanded as she slapped her right hands repeatedly on Natsu’s limp shoulder.

“Uggghhh! Asuka I’m so tired can we take a break? We’ve been doing this for the past three hours!” Natsu complained, although his voice was a bit muffled for talking while his face was flat on the floorboards.

“Awww... okay.” Asuka complied, but she was visibly beacame sad when she did so.

Natsu began to panic when he saw her lips quiver so he then racked his brain for ideas on how to cheer the little kid up before she began crying. The poor dragon slayer clearly had no idea what to do. He was as lost as a man who was lost at sea without a map or anything to guide him.

‘I’m so gonna get into a lot of trouble with Alzack and Bisca if Asuka cried.’ At that thought he began to sweat buckets.

Lucy looked at him sympathetically and then an idea popped up in her head, so she stood up from her comfortable place with Happy on the couch and walked up to where Natsu and Asuka were.

“How about you guys have a tea party. That’s fun and doesn’t require a lot of energy. Plus I’m sure Natsu would find the tea relaxing.” She suggested with a smile on her lips.

Asuka’s face instantly lit up.

“Okay! Okay! Natsu-nii can you go make some tea while I get my stuff animals?” Asuka ordered as she ran off to her room up the stairs to get her beloved stuffed animals.

“But I’m so tired and I don’t know how to make tea.” Natsu whined, not moving an inch on his place on the floor.

“It’s okay, I’ll go make the tea. You just take your time and rest up before she returns.” Lucy said as she rubbed his back before going into the kitchen.

“Aye sir!” Happy agreed.

A few minutes later Asuka was back with her two favorite stuffed animals, a shady looking frilly pink dress, and a make-up kit.

“Wear this Natsu-nii!” She said as she tossed Natsu the dress.

“No way kid!” Natsu complained as he examined the dress.

“But...” Asuka’s lips began to quiver again.

“Alright! Alright! But turn around okay.” Natsu said as his face burned with a mixture of embarassment and anger.

Just as he was about to slip into the dress, Lucy walked in.

“Woah Natsu! What are you doing?!” Lucy shouted in shock as she almost spilled the tea.

Her face as red as a tomato as she turned around to not look at him.

“He’s changing into a dress so he would look presentable at our tea party!” Asuka answered for him.

“Oh!” Lucy exclaimed.

“Hahahahaha!” She laughed uncontrollably when the thought began to sink in her.

“Stop laughing! This ain’t easy for me!” Natsu retorted.

“Fine, fine.” Lucy complied as she wiped a few stray tears from her eyes.

“There all done! You guys can look at me now.” Natsu said with a huff.

They did turn around and the sight that greeted them amazed them.

The dress suited Natsu surprisingly well. Although his arms were crossed and he was wearing a pout on his face he actually looked cute. At this thought Lucy blushed.

“You look so pretty Natsu-nii!” Asuka said as her eyes sparkled.

But that expression was soon replaced by a devilish smile and glint in her eyes.

“There’s only one thing missing.” She said as she clutched the make-up kit in her hands tighter.

Natsu was sweating cold sweat again.

“No you don’t!” He said as he backed-up from Asuka.

“Happy! Hold him!” Asuka ordered.

“Aye sir!” Happy complied.

He quickly spread his wings and flew to where Natsu was to hold him in place.

“Sorry Natsu.” The cat apologized, but his grin said otherwise.

“I thought you were my friend.” Natsu cried.

“Oh stop being such a baby Natsu. Do you need help with that Asuka?” Lucy said as she offered Asuka a helping hand and smiling to herself as she thought of this as payback for all the times he pranked her.

“I would appreciate that Lucy-nee. Thanks!” Asuka accepted.

“Not you too Luce!” Natsu cried even louder.

“Now, now, Natsu-nii hold still.” Asuka said as she held a brush centimeters away from his face.

A few moments later Natsu looked like a complete clown, but to Asuka he looked like a princess.

“All done Natsu-nii!” Asuka chimed.

“Wait Asuka! I think he’s got a little smear on his lower lip.” Lucy said as she drew her thumb against Natsu’s lower lip.

‘Soft.’ She thought in awe.

And did he just shiver?

Lucy dismissed that thought immediately.

“Now Natsu-nii I want you to meet Mr. Wolfy and Ms. Foxy.” Asuka introduced her stuffed animals to Natsu.

Natsu didn’t budge for a moment as he was still annoyed at what was happening until Asuka poked her.

“Hey Natsu-nii! Are you listening?!” Asuka asked.

“Oh yeah! yeah! Hello Mr. Wolfy and Ms. Foxy.” Natsu said through his teeth as he faked a smile.

“Good! Now will you please pour some tea into their cups Natsu-nii?” Asuka requested with a pleading look in her eyes.

“Do I have to?” Natsu said as he scratched the back of his head.

“Of course you have to do it Natsu-nii!” Asuka said with a little more force.

“Fine.” Natsu complied with a pout on his face as he poured the tea into the small cups.

Not far away from them Lucy smiled.

‘That Natsu, even though he complains a lot, he still does what Asuka tells him. He’s really good on the inside huh.’ She thought to herself.

An hour later Asuka got tired of playing tea party.

“Natsu-nii you can take off that dress and make-up now.” Asuka told him.

“Alright!” Natsu cheered.

“But do it in the bathroom!” Lucy reprimanded him after earlier incident.

Although deep down inside of her she didn’t really mind him changing in front of her as she has seen him without much of his clothes many times before, but Asuka was there so that idea was a big no.

“Fine.” Natsu pouted as he made his way to the bathroom.

After a few minutes he was already back in his original clothes without make-up on his face.

“Natsu-nii! Let’s play Save the Kitty!” Asuka suggested

“But aren’t you tired from all that tea party thing we did earlier?!” Natsu asked in disbelief.

“Nope!” She answered with a sweet smile.

“But Natsu-nii! I promise this game will be fun! You’ll get to be a dragon who kidnaps the kitty and I’ll be the powerful mage who saves the kitty from you!” Asuka explained.

“Say no more kid! You had me at dragon!” Natsu grinned at her.

“Yay!” Asuka cheered.

“Now I’m all fired up!” Natsu declared as they started playing.

Natsu and Asuka played Save the Kitty for hours with Happy! Although Natsu was pretty competitive, but Asuka won every round of their game. Natsu got mad like a sore loser, but Lucy could see that wasn’t really the case. She knew that Natsu just let Asuka win every time.

‘That sweet dork. He’d make a good father though.” Lucy smiled as she thought to herself.

Soon Asuka was barely keeping her eyes open so Natsu decided to carry her to her room and tuck her in bed.

Lucy followed after him.

“Well today was an extremely tiring day, ain’t it Luce?” He said as he shut the door behind him quietly.

“Yeah.” Lucy sighed.

“I wonder what it be like to have one of my own.” She whispered to herself, but Natsu heard her.

“Hmmm what was that Luce? Don’t you mean one of our own?” He whispered behind her ear, a sly grin forming on his face.

Lucy’s face flushed different shades of red.

“You per-” Lucy was about to shout but got cut off with Natsu pulling her in close to his face.

“Shhh Luce, Asuka is already asleep. You wouldn’t want to wake her up do you?” Natsu stated as he brushed his lips against hers.

Lucy was speechless as she stared at Natsu with eyes the size of plates and cheeks as red as freshly picked tomatoes.

And then he kissed her.

It was a sweet and passionate kiss.

And from behind the bedroom door a soft giggle was heard.

Top 50 NaLu Anime Moments {Pt 1}

And thus we get back to me fangirling over my favorite NaLu moments once again, only this time we do it based on the anime-only moments, which covers: canon, filler, movies and ovas. 100 year quest is not included bc it hasn’t been animated (yet) and it’s still fairly early in the story to start listing my fave moments, so we’ll just cover these I mentioned. If you’re not up to date with the anime, I recommend you skip this list.

Originally, I was just going to do 30 moments, but the list kept getting bigger and so on, and here we are. So I’ll post from least favorite to, well, most favorite, and will divide the list in 5 posts. In this first one, I’ll list my fave moments from 50 till 41.

Warning: lots of gushing and fangirling over a beautiful ship. also, a few moments will be differently placed on this list contrary to where they ranked before (some may be higher and some may be lower) and that’s due to the fact that some of them were better in the manga, whereas some were better in the anime, and some of them are lower simply bc dragon cry exists. so, here we go,

50. “Hang out with me a little longer.” (Ep 125).

We starting off with a filler moment, and you may wonder why it’s so low, since it’s such a cute moment. One, it’s filler. Two, it made into the list, which is already saying something. There’s many great NaLu moments, and they have a lot of scenes together, so choosing only 50 moments was hard enough, so no judging the rankings, kay? It’s the only scene ever where Natsu and Lucy are dancing, so I couldn’t leave it out. It’s such a great moment because, especially at first, Lucy hardly initiated the NaLu moments, and this was post Tenrou, which is known for its NaLu amazing-ness and where the ship truly start to develop, so to see Lucy grab Natsu’s hands even though he “ruined” what she thought would be a romantic moment, and just pull him in for dancing, was actually really sweet, especially at the sound of “Glitter” which is a great song. Also, it’s easy to miss, but Natsu is blushing when she pulls him to her so they can dance, which made the scene extra cute. Let’s ignore the fact that he probably puked on her next, lol.

49. Lucy stops Natsu in Edolas. (Ep 82).

Does anyone else find amazing the fact that Lucy can calm down Natsu and talk him out of so many fights? Natsu Dragneel, the guy who storms into fighting without a second thought? Because I do. And this moment here is no different. Back when I was watching this, I had no idea where we were going with NaLu as a ship, esp bc I knew Lisanna was coming back this arc, so it was nice to see them having moments like this, where you can see Lucy’s affect on Natsu, the way she calms him down, even when she’s upset too, like you can see on the photo. Also, a back hug, which is a total NaLu thing, so it’s a must on this list.

48. “That was dangerous. Thanks, Lucy.” (Ep 59).

BLUSHING LUCY IS SO CUTE! Srsly, though, I love seeing her blush over Natsu, especially so early in the series. I headcanon that she had a little crush on him around this time, but didn’t know how to deal with it, so she just buried it, but moments like these would happen, and it would slip out. Also, the matching outfits are a plus! I don’t have much to say about this moment, other than it’s hard to show this photo to someone and have them explain how could this be platonic in any way. I mean, they’re friends, ain’t nobody denying it, but it’s not just that.

47. Original Team Natsu is formed. (Ep 3).

Time to travel a bit back in time, back to when I didn’t even ship NaLu, and they certainly did not have romantic feelings for one another, but it’s still a pretty special moment, and that’s when Original Team Natsu, which consisted of Natsu, Lucy and Happy, was formed. I love how in sync they were with each other since the beginning; they certainly had immediate chemistry with one another, even when they were still getting to know each other. Gotta add this one, bc, where would we be if the Everlue mission never came in about? If they never needed a blonde? I mean, Natsu would probably choose Lucy anyway, but this was very essential to the building of their friendship, as it also opened the door for them to start spending time together.

46. Natsu saves Lucy from Zash. (Fairy Tail: Dragon Cry).

And from one jump in time, to something more recent, and where Natsu and Lucy are 100% the ship we love, which would usually not be so low on the list, but God, there are so many moments that weight more, especially on the emotional side, for me. This moment I feel it’s important to point out bc we all know nothing good was about to happen to Lucy, and Natsu once again comes through to save her, to make up for the fact that he almost hurt her, and he just burts in yelling “Give Lucy back!” and just wrecking in everything and punching that creep in the face. And he still picks Lucy up in his arms and is all flirty with her and starts sniffing her. Also, for someone who complains about Lucy’s weight, he sure doesn’t mind holding her like this, does he?

45. Lucy and Natsu falling from the waterfall. (Ep 59).

For those of you who don’t know, I feel it’s fair to point out Orácion Seis is my least favorite FT arc (yes, I know Alvarez exists, but at least it’s entertaining), and the only thing I really liked about it was Jerza, Wendy’s introduction, and, well, the moments with Natsu and Lucy, individually and together. I wanted to bring this moment in because it’s always nice to see Lucy being the one to save Natsu, but also because it shows how their relationship is slowly but surely progressing; before, every time he got motion sickness, she’d tell him to snap out of it or just call him pathetic. And then, somewhere along the way, she stopped finding it ridiculous. As we can see on this moment, I think for the first time, she’s so worried about him and goes on to save him even when she’s all banged up too, and she risks her life to protect him, even when he’s about to be sick right at her chest. She doesn’t ridiculize him, she doesn’t roll her eyes at him, nor ignores him, she steps in to save him because she already cares about him so much. It was a nice development in their relationship, and I’m very grateful for this moment. It’s always nice to see NaLu being reckless together.

44. End of the Starry Sky arc. (Ep 150).

And whereas in one we had Lucy jumping from a waterfall grabbing onto Natsu for dear life to protect him, here we have Natsu straight up jumping at the sky to save Lucy from falling to her death (again), with a beautiful scenery, with all the stars falling, nice background music, and, after the long roller-coaster arc we had, ending it this way, with Lucy giving Natsu one of her sweetest smiles after he catches her and then throws himself on the ground as they fall so she doesn’t get hurt, gave such a warm feeling to my heart. The nice reminder that although Lucy had lost all of her family (Layla, Jude and Michelle), she still had a family right there in him, in everyone else at Fairy Tail, and they would always be there to catch her.

43. The “almost kiss”. (Ep 219).

While I’m sure we all knew there was no way Lucy and Natsu would be kissing in the middle of the anime, and certainly not in an omake, it was very entertaning to see how they both would react to the suggestion of doing so, which resulted in: Natsu was all okay going for it, and Lucy became a flustered mess. I like how the anime added her heart speeding up when Natsu came closer, right before she pulled Happy to the middle. And can we talk about how Natsu just went for that kiss, though? He didn’t seem bothered by it in the slightest. Oh, if only Lucy wasn’t so shy! But it’s okay, I’m sure it’ll be even better when it actually happens in the actual story. Also, kudos to little Asuka, the mvp, speaking for us NaLus and trying to make dreams come true right there, lol.

42. “We can’t let it end here.” (Ep 122).

A small addition the anime made for the scene where they’re all getting ready to defend themselves from Acnologia, during Tenrou Island, which was very much appreciated. To see once again how Natsu knows exactly how to comfort Lucy, how he gives her hope, how they become stronger together, and have so much trust between them. Also, holding hands, which is always welcomed. They could have shown Natsu comforting anyone else, literally, it could have been anyone else from the guild who felt hopeless, just like they could have had anyone else comfort Lucy and give her hope. But, for this situation, who better than these two? They do so much for each other. Moments like these, filler or not, showcase how important they are for one another and the affect they have on each other. It could be their very last moments of their lives, and they were spending it with one another. Simply amazing and very touching.

41. Last moments before the war. (Ep 291).

Yup, I love this moment. I love how Natsu knows war’s gonna break out the next day (it happens on the same night but only bc Zeref is extra like that), and he goes to spend his last peaceful night at his favorite place, with his two favorite people, Lucy and Happy. I also like the talk they had and how Natsu explained himself to her, about how he loved fighting, but he didn’t like hurting/killing, and he only wanted to protect his guild. In moments like this, you can see Lucy look at him like that, like she’s thinking, yup, that’s why I love him so much. And when he says stuff like that, I think she can’t help admiring him even more. And this is the moment that opens the “let’s talk of the future” thing between NaLu, which has a nice conclusion by the end of this arc, which I’m sure you all know what is, and I’ll bring this moment back, but we’re still far from it. Anyways, a great moment because, even though it’s little, you can see how close they are with one another, and after spending one year apart, they’re more than happy to stay with each other for their last peaceful night too bad it gets interrupted huh.

Dearest Friends

I want to talk about Nalu more. I know, what a shock. As if I need an excuse to talk about this ship. But there was a line of reasoning I wrote about a few times and want to follow. (Not to mention if I don't flex now and then, I let the new crowd of Nalu haters win.)

I think that Nalu could have been a good ship. I don't know that any ship I consider of less merit than Gajevy (which is the best of the Big 4) could be seen as a great ship, especially from the guy responsible for Harelie (still an underrated top tier ship). But as far as "friends to lovers" go, this would have been a good take. I don't even put it past Mashima to bring them together during the sequel in some wat that will fall along "party lines".

Even as I'd argue for other relationships in most scenarios being better, the cool thing about Nalu is that they genuinely grow to care for each other. It's jarring to go back to the old arcs of Fairy Tail and see some of the things Natsu and Lucy do. I know that something, something groping (I'm trying to be nice) but it's hard to see Natsu outright call Lucy useless or even treat her being captured nonchalantly as happens in a few of the early arcs. And for her part, Lucy has warmed up to (some of) Natsu's crazy antics and has, at some of their best moments, been the one planning around Natsu, even as he does the same.

Speaking of which, another cool thing about the ship is that they have fought together. Action series are no stranger to ships involving characters that can and end up fighting together. But I can't think of too many examples of ships that fight as much as Natsu and Lucy do. More often, people fight each other and end up shipped by fans regardless of whether it makes sense to or not. Of course, that might be a problem with the media I'm currently consuming but, I'd love to see more of this is media (hopes in Yona of the Dawn/recommendations).

The funny thing about Nalu is that others in the series do hint at them potentially being a couple. Mashima doesn't pull the trigger on them, but the characters in the series tease at the idea that there might be more to their relationship than even they believe to be true. One of my favorite chapters in the series, “Natsu and Asuka”, even almost has them kiss. (inb4 “but that’s an omake”)

What is especially interesting and helpful in thinking about this is that amazing quote from Mashima regarding another favorite chapter of mine. He described his writing of their dynamic as "more than friends, less than lovers". They have a great relationship that has a weight and importance similar to a romantic relationship, but it expresses itself as a platonic friendship. They are friends who ought to stick together no matter what.

Now, if it sounds like I'm turning a new leaf and shipping Nalu, it isn't. I have always believed that Nalu works at its best when it is a platonic relationship. Of course, there are issues with how their relationship plays out - issues that go beyond "simple problems that happen with imperfect humans." (Sorry I broke into your house again, teehee.) However, I have tried my best not to rely on that as an argument.

Though, on this side of the last chapter, a rather annoying pro argument for Nalu has gained traction. Apparently, Nalu did become canon in its own way. Rather than having clear romantic canonization, as many argue the rest of the Big 4 do, they became canon in a way that feels more in character for them. You know, because it would be weird to show a couple is canon with a kiss or having an obvious confession like a normal couple.

As you can imagine, I have roasted this aspect of Nalu arguments within days of that chapter coming out. (People were making that argument back then and I found it stupid then.) I don't consider Nalu to be canon and I have numerous arguments why this is a bad argument. However, I don't think I've talked about what I'm about to enough. Part of that, I'd like to think, is because I've had time to think about the series and its ending as a whole.

I feel that the idea that this is a kind of secret confession is an unfortunate misreading of the situation. It's been said many times that friendship is the gateway to romance. From my perspective, this is dangerous to leave on its own. To be clear, a good romance should involve an obvious level of friendship (can't say from experience) and a good friendship can become a romantic relationship (again, not from experience). But the vast majority of friendships you will likely be in aren't going to be romantic in any sense.

The thing that always gets me in these ship discussions, especially as someone who writes about this stuff all the time, is that it's always hard to swallow that pill when it applies to your own ship. I can do that for Nalu, but if this was someone else's post on Graytear, I would have personal issues with them and their conclusions. I get that there's a level of personal interpretation that matters when this comes into any and all shipping.

But, like, when the series creator says that his current writing of the ship in question isn't exactly romantic, that should mean something in this discussion. (inb4 "but muh death of the author") I feel like the fact that they haven't clearly become a romantic couple means they aren't a couple yet if they're even ever going to become one. There’s a difference between not liking what canon gives you and ignoring reality and this whole line of argumentation reeks of the latter.

What gets me the most about this argument is that this current state of Nalu is probably the end goal of a perfect friendship. Gaining a friend who will be with you forever? Who wouldn't want that? I certainly want something like that, even if it isn't romantic. Heck, there are (probably) advantages to that kind of friend being platonic over a lover. I’m not saying that romantic relationships can’t be expected to last forever? I’m wondering why people think friendships can’t also last forever as friendships.

In Conclusion:

That Nalu and Lucy consider each other to be their closest friend should be amazing in its own right. For all the issues one can have with their dynamic, it should be great that they can celebrate their friendship. This isn't a friendship complicated by weird rivalries or coming from different worlds. They met, grew close together, and will hopefully grow old together as friends.
