Cone Snail

Is that a pretty shell that you see on the beach? Usually, that’s the case. But for some unlucky beachgoers, it’s a nightmare straight from hell.

Cone snails are marine mollusks are usually found in shallow waters or coral reefs. With over 600 species, these snails are found almost all over the globe. They have exterior shells that resemble that of a conch shell. Cone snails have a needle-like harpoon that can shoot out to paralyze their prey, mainly small fish. Unfortunately, unsuspecting shell collectors and snorkelers also fall victim to this venom.

If you are to ever get stung by a cone snail, no need to worry. The pain is typically about that of a bee sting. However, cone snails in tropical areas can pack a punch, with some stings being near fatal. Most people come across cone snails on the beach. Since cone snails look like ordinary shells, people pick it up and get stung. Simple as that. While cone snails don’t look like that much, the venom can cause paralysis and blurry vision, which can lead to death.

While there is currently no anti-venom for cone snail stings, it is recommended to apply hot water to the affected area and use an immobilization technique to help stop the venom from flowing to other parts of the body. While the venom can leave you in the hospital for days, there are some benefits to the potent venom. Cone snail venom is also currently being developed in the medical world. The venom can be used to produce a painkiller that is much more powerful than morphine called Ziconotide. Are these snails life takers or lifesavers?
