Get ready for OMG ZINE, PLEASE! #2: #SwawesomeGreetings!

When we started omgzineplease, we were going into unknown territory. Thankfully, y'all have been gracious with our little foal steps, and as a result, the zine had been a resounding success.

In the wake of that success, we are pleased to announce the prompt for the next volume: #SwawesomeGreetings!

Yes, a zine about the holidays for the holidays during the holidays. A time and place for fic and fanart of your favorite characters partaking in holiday spirit: be it setting up decorations, upholding sacred traditions, subverting traditions, opening presents, fighting off the mob during Black Friday, listening to Christmas music (or subjecting others to the music), counting down to the new year, and so on.

The key thing is that it has to occur during the holiday season (roughly November to the start of February; Halloween and Valentines are explicitly out) and be tied to holiday themes, not just generic Winter themes.

And don't feel like you're restricted to Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Gregorian New Year's. After all, many different holidays like Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and Lunar New Year happen during that period as well!!

Like the past iteration, this will be a multi-month affair, with sign-ups happening in August, check-ups happening throughout the process, and the zine being published in PDF format February 2024.

Sign-ups open August 14, 2023 and more specific guidelines will be released then as well.

Looking forward for y'all to take part. This will be a 'swawsome time.

Eric has been sitting next to Jack Zimmermann for two and a half months before he hears him utter more than three words in a row.

“Can you meet in the library? Tomorrow morning,” his voice is quiet, bland, and his eyes are trained on the paper detailing the assignment outline Mr. Liddell handed out. Eric doesn’t think they’ve ever actually made eye contact, even though they’ve been sharing a desk since the semester started. “I have practice after school.”

“Uh – yeah, yeah, sure,” Eric stammers, nervously fiddling with his own assignment paper, folding the edges inwards and then smoothing them out. Meeting in the morning means he’s going to have to ask Coach to leave the house even earlier than usual, but he’d rather fail the whole class than explicitly remind senior ice-hockey captain Jack Zimmermann that he doesn’t have a driving license yet. Or a car he can drive to school. 

“Okay,” Jack says, but his eyebrows draw together and his mouth pinches in that way that always makes Eric shrink away in alarm. He looks vaguely angry, and since Eric can’t think of a single thing he could’ve done to inspire that, he tentatively assumes Jack isn’t angry at him. Which leaves –

“I’m actually, uh, real good at these – stuff,” Eric says hesitantly, in case Jack’s anger stems from worrying about his final grade in Family and Consumer Science. Jack doesn’t immediately go for the obvious jab (“‘Course you are, Bittle, you’ve always been into all that girly shit, huh?”), so Eric gathers his courage and elaborates, “Well – well, maybe not the personal finance stuff, but the cooking and the sewing. Um.”

He’s opening himself up to a world of pain, here, considering that he’s good at cooking because he spends most of his free time in the kitchen with his mother and he’s good at sewing because up until a few years ago he still sewed the sequins onto his leotards. But either Jack doesn’t care enough to make fun of him, or doesn’t think class is the best time for it. 

“Right,” is Jack’s response. He doesn’t seem inclined to say more, so Eric swallows the flood of words clawing up his throat and grips the edge of the desk to ground himself. There’s a faded J+M engraved in the metal. He traces it with a blunt fingernail while Mr. Liddell drones on in the background.

Class is dismissed with a rush of chairs scraping and voices rising and school bags’ zippers opening. Eric stuffs his creased assignment paper into his bag and stands up, half-heartedly wishing he was brave or cool enough to skip school. He has calculus next period. Facing Coach’s wrath might actually be a better fate than that. 

“I’m alright with finances.”

It takes Eric a very long moment to realize who is speaking, and who they’re speaking to. He turns around, almost certain he’s misheard, and blinks at Jack Zimmermann, who is shoving his water bottle into his bag and folding the assignment paper into weirdly even halves before slipping it in as well.

“So. We can divide the work,” Jack finishes, confirming that he was in fact talking to Eric. 

He looks up then, and for what is certainly the first time, their eyes meet. Jack offers a stilted nod, shoulders his bag, and disappears into the sea of other students jostling out toward the halls.

His eyes are such a striking shade of blue. Eric’s not sure how he could have possibly missed that until now.

New Release Date: June 5th

Hey y'all. We indeed bring tidings of the dreaded delay.

When we started OMG Zine Please, we knew going in that this was gonna be a pretty ambitious project. With a hefty final submission count from our amazing contributors, our inaugural issue is going to pack quite the punch! And we wouldn't have it any other way!

Seeing this community come together and express all the love we all share for this special webcomic has been wonderful. Still, as this is our first ever release, we are finding that even through the many checks behind the scenes, the team we've put together, and keeping realistic goals in sight, not every play can be accounted for! There's bound to be a bump in the road here and there.

So let's start with the good news: as we've stated, we got our submissions in and they look excellent! Seriously, we've been inundated with excellent prose and artwork, and all contributors deserve multiple pats on the back. We thank them so much for their hard work!

Now the less good news here is that while we are now at the proofing, compiling, and formatting stage for each submission to be presentable for public consumption instead of looking like a more-last-minute-than-usual powerpoint that has its white-background-and-default-font slides in the wrong order.... we're taking a bit longer than was estimated. We sincerely apologize for the delay.

We'd like to give you a look at our current process for full transparency as we want you to be aware of the status of your hard work.

Currently, we are:

Going through the submissions to ensure each piece is within guidelines.

Analyzing which pieces fit best in which order so as to compliment each other aesthetically, tonally, and with good pacing for the entire release overall.

Ensuring our final layout will smoothly transition fics from doc form to pdf and balance the different dimensions of each art piece.

Adding professional touches to the zine itself (not the contributions) to ensure a cohesive and professional finish is achieved so that all contributors and zine-enjoyers can feel as though they're holding a real and true zine that honors the source material.

All of that to explain the reality check: such things are clearly gonna take a slightly longer time than we hoped for, especially since we found out that May tends to be a fairly hectic month!

Now another dose of good news: the new release date isn't far away! In fact it's less than a month's time. We expect to get all this set up and ready to go before June 5th, which is our new release date!

Thanks so much for your patience and for sticking with us through this new endeavor.

We plan on making it worth your while.

Leave a Light On [Zimbits, M, Chapter 4/?]

Chapter 4 is now on ao3!

Summary:  It would be too kind to say Jack Zimmermann, Pulitzer Prize winner and son of legendary newspaper publisher Bob Zimmermann, resigned in disgrace mere days before the biggest story of his life broke without his name on the byline. But somehow it seems slightly less bad than the truth, which is that Jack was fired, by his own father, for getting too close to a source, blowing his chance at breaking the story he’d been working on for six months, and compromising the paper’s integrity as a purveyor of unbiased journalism, all in one fell swoop.

Now he's starting over, reporting small town news out of an inn in Vermont and trying not to get too close to anybody. A certain baker might make that difficult.
