Echo/Wrecker

So, about my least popular, but not the least beloved relationship tag ❤️.

There are 22 fics tagged CT-21-0408 | CT-1409 | Echo/Clone Trooper Wrecker (or Echo/Wrecker for short) on AO3 for today.

11 fics are PolyBatch fics where the Echo/Wrecker storyline is just a part of the overall fun. However, “Have You Got a Friend in the Night?” (moonlight_mums) has an almost autonomous chapter dedicated to this pairing. And fics by forceinsensitive, containing Echo/Wrecker tag, that comprise part of the large cycle “my heart is not a machine”, are simply very, very good. I would call them explicitly emotional, for they explore more this side of Echo's relationships than the carnal one—and still all these are very sensual. The author of this long cycle is one of my favourite writers in TBB fandom 😍.

As for the rest, more Echo/Wrecker pairing-centered fics,

number one for me is “ease into this new world” by ibissal. It is explicitly sexual, corporal—and full of emotional warmth at the same time.

“Helping hands” by bitterfishies, on the contrary, is an absolutely innocent text, more like Echo&Wrecker with “blink and you miss it” shipping moment. Helping hand is not the helping hand in the classic slashy meaning 😃! Just a moment of Echo's self-maintenance, all homely with a drop of sadness.

“Love All Over Again” (robinasnyder) is light-hearted and fun, even a bit silly. Because there's definitely not the way you treat time travel!

“Echo's Haunted” (Rowanartist and Sleepy_fan) objectively must be rather good fanfic. But the plot twist “Bad Batch doesn't like Echo” (and Wrecker, as I can tell) is absolutely not my cup of tea, my don't like, don't read, sorry.

There's also one fu… sorry, fic “Experiencing Technical Difficulties” by coinin, which is tagged Echo/Tech/Wrecker, but which deserves Echo/Wrecker tag completely, and which is just awesome and hot in itself, Wrecker dealing with physical side of love making and Tech almost getting off by brain-fucking Echo, literally 😉.

So, speaking of the stuff worthy of my personal recommendations, that leaves only one more fic, my own “Echo and Narcissus”. I love it shamelessly. It reflects more or less the main bits and kinks I love about this rare pair. I also enjoyed writing it, how from the idea “let them relax and have a light-hearted quicky against the wall” it grew into a story of stories, one Scheherazadian night. How Wrecker unexpectedly became a storyteller, and Echo the listener; and Echo side dished his own observations to the table. And in the end, it is the same story, as in thousands of fanfics throughout multifandom, how two people fall for each other 😊

Constance Doves’s Fortune

This is a question that comes up pretty often, and for good reason: where did Constance Dove get all that money? We don’t know anything about her other than her social status, that she was a good adoptive mother, and that she died. She sounds sweet and unassuming, but is basically just a plot device to explain why Clive is rich. Now this could be seen as more of a fic prompt than a theory, but could Clive be continuing/repurposing something that she started?

Look, Future London is massive. The construction is unfinished, as you can see on “Midland Road”, but the drainpipes and grates are rusted, and there are full grown trees out in the distance. You could say Dimitri and Clive got them like that on purpose, but what if they didn’t? Do you really think a city can be popped up in just ~5 years, even with infinite money at your disposal? What if Future London was a project started by Constance for whatever reason, and the whole thing was included in Clive’s inheritance?

Why would she build this? It would have to be for something both literally and figuratively underground. According to her anecdotally good nature, maybe she was trying to evade the corrupt government by building a secret community exempt from the law, housing people and letting them live on their own terms. It would explain why the residents didn’t seem like actors so much as people who have lived there for a long time, participating in an established community.

This is where the “theory” gets kind of edgy. Clive’s gang goes by the vague name of “The Family”. You’d think they’d have his name in front as families typically do. He somehow built up a functional organized crime ring in those ~5 years as well? It’s not impossible, but it’s unlikely. Correct me if I’m wrong, but Spring and Cogg said that they loyally worked for the Dove family, right? What family? It was just Constance until she adopted Clive. What if The Family is short for The Dove Family, and it’s been around much longer than Clive? It would explain how organized and powerful it is, but it would also explain why Spring and Cogg didn’t seem too bothered by the underground city. They expressed guilt and horror at Clive’s terrorism plan, but not anything going on before that.

Back to the topic of the post, what if Constance’s massive fortune came from illegal activity? That way, someone could make a ridiculously obscene amount of money even at an old age. All of this could have been part of Clive’s inheritance, repurposed by him for his revenge plan, disregarding any of the original intent behind it.

Or Constance could’ve just made all that money from selling both soap and chocolate.

Miraculous Kakegurui AU

I came up with this randomly and I’m surprised at how well it fits. This is a “casting” AU that follows the plot of Kakegurui, so beware of spoilers. The events mirror the anime very closely, but the characters are more true to MLB. I won’t explain the games for time’s sake, but they’re all the same. I have to say, I’m a sucker for “everyone’s just a tad crazy, evil, and badass” AUs. This isn’t a fic so much as a summary of what happens. Look forward to every major character getting their moment of spotlight in future episodes!

out of the current cast, who do you think is most likely to be the mastermind? or do you think its someone we havent met yet? imo theres very few people who would make zero sense as the mastermind (mainly shin because he's gotten his arc + him being the mastermind would be a bit redundant, seeing as he already played the villain role) but aside from that i could see almost anyone from the group as the Big Bad

I don’t think that anyone in our main group is the mastermind, because I am most convinced by the theory that the mastermind is the Man from the Memorandum.

I think that the Man from the Memorandum became the new leader of Asu-Naro after winning the previous Death Game, and now he is hosting another one. I think he’s currently calling himself “Meister” and that he hosted the Russian Roulette challenge.

@ct-multifandom​ recently wrote an excellent post spelling out this theory right here.

I also wrote a post about my feelings on this theory here, where I tried to dig into potential parallels between Meister and Shin, and how they differ from each other.

I think it’s very likely that Meister wants Sara to win, because we know from reading the Memorandum that he was distraught that his beloved high school girl died in the first game. Now, he seems to have a “second chance” with Sara, who currently has the highest chance of winning.

Personally, I would be stunned if anyone in the main cast was revealed to be the “Big Bad,” since I’m already convinced it’s Meister. However, I am anticipating “shady plot twists” for the following characters:

1. Keiji: Keiji has been acting suspicious from the get-go. I really like the theory that he also saw the percentage papers in his first trial, because that makes for a great parallel with Shin. He definitely learned something about Sara from the beginning. We need to learn what that “something” was.

2. Gin: There are many mysteries surrounding Gin. And while he is lovable, he has been a flat character. I’m certain that there will be upcoming plot twists concerning him. However, I am hoping that Gin will be written as a pitiful pawn in a villain’s game, rather than a devious 12-year-old, since that seems a more realistic way to portray a child. (Though there’s also the chance that he is not even human, and he could be some kind of newfangled doll that bleeds.)

3. Shin: We still need to learn how he unlocked his collar! Was it because of the key necklace? Where did he get it? Was it a gift, or did he steal it? Am I completely wrong about the key necklace?? I’m honestly expecting that Shin’s past will be written sympathetically—he’ll have plenty of chances to make bad choices in the present day—but I still had to mention him!

4. Kanna: I like the theory that Kanna is likely related to Original Sou Hiyori by blood. And possibly Meister, though that’s me being wildly speculative.

5. Sara: Sara is clearly central to the Death Game, and Mr. Chidouin seems to have played a part as well. Sometimes I wonder if Sara may have lost her memories about being connected to Asu-Naro before the Death Game began, since losing memories is an ongoing issue in this story. That would make for an exciting plot twist for the player, since we would be learning about Sara’s “missing memories” at the same time she does. That’s a trope I’ve seen in other smart videogames as well. Regardless of whether Sara has missing memories or not, we need to learn more about her suspicious family.

I’m actually hopeful that all of these characters will still be written sympathetically, even if there are “shady plot twists” coming for them.

There are other fans who speculate a lot about the dummies and how suspicious they are, but I am not very good at theorizing about the dummies. We still don’t know them very well. Though again…I still have this instinct to sympathize with all of the Death Game participants, haha.

(I even have instinctive sympathy for Original Sou, since he was also supposed to be a participant. He might have been forced into that position. I’m just saying!! There’s lots of room for different shades of moral grayness in the participants.)

As I was writing this, I started thinking about how YTTD is concerned with themes of the cycle of abuse. We see this most notably in the dynamic of: Original Sou --> Shin --> Kanna.

I’m speculating that we may be able to extend that cycle to: Meister --> Original Sou --> Shin --> Kanna.

(Since Meister is at least Original Sou’s boss.)

Even with Meister—the man I’m accusing of being the Mastermind, and the person I have the least sympathy for—even he was once a Death Game participant, same as everyone else. The Man from the Memorandum was forced to suffer through the Hades Incident.

The cycle of abuse can be seen broadly in how the Death Game is repeating itself. We had one in the past, and now there’s another in the present.

And it’s even possible that the victor of this Death Game will continue to perpetuate it in the future.

i recently read @ct-multifandom's lovely post on meister being the mastermind behind the death game, and it reminded me of @sou-ver-2-0's theory that meister is midori's father. midori's unexpected reaction to meister as a choice for his name could also support this theory, but i'm not really here to talk about backing for the theory, just how cool it'd be if meister was midori's father!

it would tie into the recurring theme of parental issues that seems to be going on with the characters, specifically the fathers. sara's dad seems dubious and he's not her real father, gin's dad, while (thankfully) not harmful, has a drinking problem, keiji never mentions his dad so presumably he's absent, if mr. policeman was joe's dad, then joe lost his dad, q-taro never knew his parents, and we don't really know if kanna knew her's but i assume she was previously in an orphanage as well? shin feels spoiled by his parents and indebted to them, and gashu… well, you guys already know how shitty gashu is, lol.

so a turbulent relationship between sou and meister would fit into this bunch pretty well! but how it draws a parallel between sou and shin is my favourite part of this theory.

like, imagine: meister has been obsessed recreating the hades incident for sou's whole life, and treats sou poorly as a result. more like a subordinate than a son. to regain a sense of power in his life, sou terrorizes shin– someone who likely has similar parental issues, but is less privileged than sou by class and a lot more vulnerable to abuse because of his soft, emotional nature. this makes him pretty easy to pick on. maybe sou tells shin about his dad to make shin feel sympathy for him, so he can abuse his kindness and keep tormenting him? or perhaps, sou would become outraged if shin found out, because that would change the way shin views him from The Invincible Sou Hiyori to just like him, and lessen the power sou has over him by making him a little less fearful and a little more human.

i'd really like if it was something like that! as much as i enjoy emotionless and all-powerful sou hiyori we have now, i'd enjoy the shin parallel and depth more ! (　＾∇＾)
