Sigh.
Once again I am pleading with you (and by you I mean ONE Championship specifically) to make Anissa Meksen vs Janet Todd. We can't just keep having Meksen beat up girls with a quarter of the experience she has.

As always it was a wild year of combat sports but I think from top to bottom the most fun  I had this year watching a card was One First Strike. I took the day off of work so I could watch this and it was worth every single minute from the time it started up until the holy shit moment of the year to end the card.

Some Asshole's Top 5 Kickboxing Matches of 2021
Honorable Mentions
While putting together this list, I realized that whittling down a full year of fights to just 5 is really hard. Despite the global pandemic we all endured, there was many fantastic kickboxing matches this past year. Here's a few that just missed my top 5. Also, please know that I am in no way a professional writer. I'm just some asshole that likes kickboxing.
Jamal Ben Saddik vs Rico Verhoeven (GLORY Collision 3, October 28)
If you're looking to see two absolute units go to war on a big stage in front of a massive crowd, look no farther. This fight was the rubber match between arguably the top two heavyweight fighters in the world of Kickboxing today. Their encounter before this was a thriller, which saw 'Big Ben' Saddik hurt the GLORY Heavyweight Champion Rico Verhoeven early in the fight, before Rico managed to fight his way back and secure a KO victory in the end. This fight was equally as exciting, possibly even more so. Seriously, I don't know what else to say about this fight other than check it out. It's as good an introduction to the sport of Kickboxing as you can find.
Cedric Doumbe vs Murthel Groenhart (GLORY 77, January 30th)
Fighting's always more fun when the people involved don't like each other. To say their was bad blood between Cédric Doumbé and Murthel Groenhart would be an understatement. These guys had fought twice before, each owning a decision victory over the other. Leading up to this third match up, the two went at each other non-stop on social media. When it was finally time to come to blows, the two welterweights didn't hold back. This fight was a wild brawl from start to finish. On a personal note, Cédric Doumbé has been one of my favorite Kickboxers to watch for years now. Since this fight he has set his sights on the world of MMA, and is of to a good start. I wish nothing, but the best for the best!
Sittichai Sitsongpeenong vs Tayfin Ozcan (ONE First Strike, October 15)
When I was first getting into Kickboxing, Sittichai Sitsongpeenong was the first thai fighter I got to see. Watching him rise through the ranks of GLORY, win two lightweight tournaments, claim the lightweight championship, and go on to have an incredibly successful run atop the company was a joy. On the flipside of things, I knew hardly anything about Tayfun Ozcan leading up to this fight, other than that he was a highly touted prospect. These two fought a very closely contested match up that I thoroughly enjoyed watching. It was close enough that you could make the argument that it was a draw. However, since tHeRe ArE nO dRaWs iN oNe, a winner had to be chosen. I would love to see these two go at it again someday.
**Janet Todd vs Anne Line Hogstad (ONE on TNT II, April 14)
I'm cheating here. Technically this was a muay thai fight, but it involved the ONE Atomweight Women's Kickboxing Champion Janet Todd, so I'm including it. This fight has the unique distinction of being the only fight on my list that aired live (pre-taped) on US television. As a big fan of Todd, I just think it's cool that she was given this stage to shine on. I think Janet Todd and her teammate Jackie Buntan are two of the finest female strikers you can find today. They can do it all. Great footwork, quickness, attacking/countering in combination. They're both just so fun to watch. In this fight Todd showed why she is the ONE Atomweight Kickboxing Champion, totally shutting down her opponent throughout the course of three rounds before ending it emphatically with one of the cleanest counter body kicks you'll ever see. One of my favorite finishes this year, easily.
