At the entrance of the United Nations there is a magnificent carpet that adorns the wall, a gift from the people of Iran. Alongside it are these words of the Persian poet, Sa'adi (1258)
"Human beings are members of a whole,
In creation of one essence and soul.
If one member is afflicted with pain
Other members uneasy will remain.
If you've no sympathy for human pain,
The name of human you cannot retain!"
AU. The battle is won and Thorin is the rightful King under the Mountain (alive and well). They live with Bilbo in Erebor, but Thorin had to go on a long trip on state business to another kingdom. Finally he returns home and halfway there he sends Bilbo a messenger raven.
In Thorin's letter:
My dear Bilbo!
My love, my life, my priceless treasure! Words cannot describe how much I miss you. We are already halfway home, but I can neither eat nor sleep, because all my thoughts are only about you. We go day and night in the pouring rain almost without stopping, because I so want to hug you and kiss you all over, from the tips of your ears to your furry little feet! Parting with you is unbearable for me, my heart!
Yours until my last breath, Thorin.
Bilbo sends an answer:
There is no milk in the Mountain, stop somewhere along the way and buy some. I don't want to go outside, it's rainy.
