in chapter 856, sanji tells luffy what he truly wants.
i’ve seen many versions of the english translation on many different manga websites and in the physical copies themselves, but this is the one i see the most
Tumblr media
beautiful. of course.
but i’ve also seen “i want to return to the sunny” and my all time favorite:
“i want to go home to the sunny”
and as someone that prefers the dub, i’ve been ACHING for the dub to come out for this scene for MONTHS just to see what specific line they choose to use.
it finally came out.
look at this.
i quite literally had to lay on the floor and take a minute.

🍬 WHOLE CAKE GREETINGS 🍬
I still can't believe I've reached the Whole Cake arc! In 2020, 3 years ago, when I was just 14 years old and started watching One Piece, I never thought that I could make it to weekly episodes one day, nor that I could love this work so much. But yes, I did.
I hope I can watch until EP 825 today💕
I'm getting closer and closer to the weekly ones, wait for me until then, thank you!💗

Episode 825: Parallels
Pinnacle of Whole Cake Island in my opinion. (please do not get me started on Katakuri vs Luffy… i was kinda disappointed when i watched it)
Tumblr media
Anyways, i loved this episode the most, it was brimming with symbolism that riddled my silly little brain for days on end. I would like to preface that i’m not yet caught up… episode 1051 please cut me some slack. I will catch up before Gear 5 Luffy though, trust. I digress though. As i was saying, the most glaring piece of symbolism was the comparison between Sanji’s mother and Luffy. It’s not much of a comparison actually, more of a parallel. During the flashback of little Sanji running in the rain to get some food to his mother, he drops it, making it look basically inedible and gross. It perfectly parallels Sanji in the present, running towards Luffy in the meeting spot and the food being ruined from the rain.
In both situations, Luffy and Sanji’s mother ate the food gratefully, citing how delicious it was. However, in both these situations, I believe it represents different things.
Sanji, a boy who was a failure for being human.
Tumblr media
In the first situation of Sanji’s mother eating the food that had gone bad, it represents her love for him, despite him being not as good as his siblings. Sanji is represented by the “bad” food, because of the fact he is human (has emotions and moderately athletic, in comparison to his inhumane siblings at least), not perfect like his siblings. Up until that point, his humanity was seen as a disgrace, which made him utterly unwanted by his father and bullied by his siblings.
This symbolism really hits home during the scene where he drops the food in the rain. It was an honest mistake and humans are prone to making mistakes. Ever heard of the saying, “To err is human”? That is basically it. In that one scene, Sanji’s plight as a child is perfectly encapsulated (when everyone around him puts him down for the fact he are not perfect, it is completely unfair, because humans are made to make mistakes) And when his mother accepts his dish, without question, it was an ode to Sanji, a testament of a mother’s everlasting and unconditional love. Sanji’s mother was the first to ever accept him as he is, as a human with his flaws and all.
And before i talk about the parallel between the current Luffy and Sanji interaction, I’d like to say that because of his mother, (as well as Reiju, because she was the one who eventually set him free, cried for him and basically showed that she actually cared for him like how his mother did), he has this moral obligation (doesn’t want to hurt them, believing women should be treated better than men.) towards all women. He wants to love all women, maybe as an ode to both his mother and sister, the only people who had accepted him as a child.
Sanji, a man shackled to his conflicting obligations.
Tumblr media
Hence, with all this talk of moral obligations, it brings us to the parallel once more with the Luffy and Sanji interaction. We all know that Sanji is a man of great morality, not only that, he is extremely steadfast towards them. Where Sanji’s mother accepted him for not being perfect physically, Luffy accepts him for not being perfect mentally. OKOK I know it’s phrased weird but hear me out. Like I said, Sanji is a man of great morality, due to his rough upbringing. Hence why he feels all sorts of obligations that held him back from returning to Luffy and the rest of the crew at first. (Sanji felt obligated to Chef Zeff for raising him which made him reject Luffy the first time he asked him to join the crew is one of the examples of how his obligations had set him back before.)
This time however, Sanji felt obligated not to return to the crew because he felt like a) he disrespected luffy and b) was obligated to not let his family die, both his family at Baratie and his biological family and c) his obligation to the strawhats as they would be attacked if he returned to them, hence why he left them for their own safety.
This made him believe that sacrificing himself, his happiness and his freedom was the way to do it. Sanji is incredibly kind, that is what makes him human, yet at the same time, his kindness had shackled him once more. I belive that the food going bad is his own view of himself, believing that by going back to Luffy after his disrespect as a subordinate, it would make him a bad, selfish person.
And that is the flaw that Sanji sees in himself, going back to Luffy to ask for his help to get him out of his difficult situation after actively beating him up and refusing his help earlier. I mean realistically speaking, would you go back to someone you've hurt and ask for their help?
But when Sanji says how his food was a failure when in actuality talking about how he was a failure as a subordinate as well as keeping up with his obligations, Luffy merely says it was delicious. This then reassures Sanji as Luffy doesn't see him as any less because of his decision. Luffy is all about freedom, hence why he didn't see Sanji as 'going bad' because of his selfish act of returning and failing all his other obligations. This is because the biggest obligation a person has is to themself, the freedom to say and feel what you want without any reservations. Sanji is his friend, his crew, and that is enough of a reason for Luffy to fight for his freedom to put himself before his kindness.

THE ONE PIECE DIARIES
Episode Count: 200
Here we are. Episode 200. (Only what? 825 to go? As of right now at least? ^^')
The whole Skypiea arc was... okay. It'll probably never be one of my favorites. There was a lot of it that just felt sort of dry to me.
But you know what? I'm still in love with the idea of an adventure to a sky island. Mentally and emotionally, it feels like the kind of thing there's no return from, you know? To do something so mystical together... Especially for Robin, who's still pretty new to the crew at this point... It feels like the kind of adventure that would really cement in her place as one of them, even with as many secrets as she still has. I'm looking forward to seeing that loyalty tested.
I'm actually really enjoying the little adventure they dropped into next, though. Like, I can't tell if this Navarone fortress arc is supposed to be filler... But it's a lot of fun. And that's all I really care about.
Episode 200 actually left me, like, exactly in the middle of it, with the Straw Hats first starting their escape. (Breaking Usopp and Zoro out of jail, at least.) I've actually really been enjoying watching Commander Jonathan puzzle out and counter their movements, even though he is the antagonist. He just seems like a cool guy. I feel like his efforts will be thwarted in part because everyone else around him is an idiot... And in part because he seems to be under the impression that they actually have a plan. ^^'
But this last episode actually threw in a scene that made me think it might not be a filler arc after all. The old man cautioning Usopp about how to repair Merry... And the talk they had of the mysterious figure who repaired her in secret up on Skypiea... I'd actually forgotten that happened, but it sounds like a mystery that may have some significance to the story, going forward. I'm excited for the rest of this little jailbreak!

Sanji is carrying so much guilt of everything that has currently happened (kicking his captain into pulp, seeing him in the verge of death because of a hunger strike and so on) and then there is Luffy who just warmly smiles at him instead of judging and questioning.

Tumblr media
“Jamil! Hang in there! JAMIL!”
A young boy had screamed the name of his most beloved friend, even as his voice cracked, even as the adults dragged him away.
Those children did nothing wrong.
And yet they grew up in the cradle of poison.
He had learnt about the word when he was even younger. Because it was easy to learn a word when you had firsthand experience.
“Poison. A substance that causes injury, illness or death to living organisms,” he had muttered glumly back then, “Life would be so much better if these things didn’t exist.”
It was to be expected, everyone assured (ironically providing no reassurance), because he was Kalim Al-Asim. He was born to suffer, and people were born to suffer for him.
Still, for the following days, he nestled up beside Jamil’s bed for as long as the adults allowed him to — which was never quite enough. And he had listened to Jamil’s frail breaths...
...fearing, for he didn’t know if it would stop all of a sudden.
“Hey, has the culprit been securely locked up?”
...raging, for his friend deserved nothing like this.
“When are they gonna pass the sentence? What’s it gonna be?”
...and hating.
He would never forgive the one who did this.
Never.
They would pay for this.
He would make sure of it.
“Alright, dad. Have your way with them.”
He wished the adults would do something about the culprit, albeit not knowing what exactly they do with these scums, nor did he ever think he would agree with their ways.
But the fear, the rage and the hatred said otherwise.
“NOt eNoUGh!”
they screeched in sync with every frail breath he heard.
One afternoon when the sky cried like never before, he had had it with their cacophonies. He needed to do something to silence them.
So he found himself before the gate to the underground dungeon.
“YeS, cOMe tAKe a PEeK.”
He did swear to make sure they’d pay, didn’t he?
“ANd sEe wHAt pOWeR yOUr WiShiNG coMmANds.”
The sky cried harder.
It was red. The chains were red, the walls were red, the floor was red.
Kalim backed away, retracing his steps, retracing a piece of rationality he didn’t know he lost.
Why did he come here? What did he expect to find here?
The fear, the rage and the hatred didn’t scream anymore. Instead they cackled.
Red was their favourite colour.
They’d reach deep to crystallise your heart into a ruby. Entranced to touch it, ensnared to release it, you soon find yourself trapped within a cave.
But it would be no cave of wonders.
They had injected poison in the ruby. A poison that would make you ill with hallucinations, and you’d desperately extend a hand to retain a single sliver of security—
Staining other innocents with their beloved red in the process.
He’d recognise this colour best, he grew up in its cradle after all. He had seen so much, when red had dripped from an assailant’s dagger, when red had splattered over his siblings’ limbs, when red had oozed out from his own injuries...
...when red had torn its way through Jamil’s throat before he collapsed.
They were all the same, same as the red before his eyes right now.
Because everyone was the same. Everyone ventured into some cave wanting to find safety, wanting to feel in control. No one ever took notice of the craze in their own eyes when they grabbed the ruby.
No one ever took notice of the rationality they lost when fear and rage and hatred had poisoned them.
“Life would be so much better if these things didn’t exist.”
He ran. Out of the dungeon, out of the cave. Not safe, not in control, but he refused to be tempted any longer. He hated red. Red hurts people, and as far as he was concerned, being hurt is not something he’d like to happen to him, nor Jamil, nor his family.
Then why must it happen to other people?
Poisons shouldn’t exist. He wouldn’t let them.
So he’d get rid of fear.
“Jamil... you alone would never betray me, right?”
So he’d get rid of rage.
“It’s all my fault...! I drove Jamil up the wall without even noticing. He really isn’t the kind of guy who would do those things!”
So he’d get rid of hatred.
“I’m swo glad you’rre alive... so gwad you’re aliiiiive...!”
He’d have faith instead, make excuses instead, and forgive instead. Under all circumstances. No matter how much he needed to feel safe, no matter how much he needed to feel in control, he’d rather traverse the vast desert than return to the cave.
He can always make an oasis after all.
But please, don’t poison his water.
He only wanted to have faith.
“We’re best friends, right?”
Even if it were an excuse.
“We’re best friends, right?”
He was determined to forgive.
“We’re best friends.”
“Right?”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The End
