I don't think people understand how hard it is to be funny. like I sometimes spend hours imagining all the cool things I could say to people, and most of the time it works. but it's hard to be creative in that way, you have to think on your feet. and sometimes you don't have something smart to say so you have to rely on your stash of witty one-liners.

and it's even harder when you're an author and you have to WRITE that stuff, and make it feel natural.

I've been thinking about my portrayals (in tabletop games primarily, but also my writing) of villains, since I'm heading towards a quipping villains for maybe the first time ever as a storytelling. Most of my villains are serious folks, so this'll be new.
