Akwa Ibom: Community protests, blocks oil firm over alleged environmental degradation
Ukpana Community in Onna Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, on Wednesday, blocked an oil firm, Natural Oilfield Services Limited, NOSL, operating in their area with the claims that its activities have destroyed their environment, economic trees, water bodies and traditional shrines. They mentioned the creeks, streams and swamps bulldozed and sand filled to include Idim Mkpighe, Idim Uton, Etuk Enyang and a host of others while Ancestral shrines destroyed include Nkuku, Ikot Inwang, Ikpaisong Ubop Owo and others. NOSL, which has a joint management team with the Nigeria National Petroleum Exploration and Production Limited, is an operator of OML 13 in Oniong Clan, Onna LGA and engages in oil and gas appraisal as well as well drilling. The protesters, who were men and women, nursing mothers and youths, placed a traditional injunction, demanding the stoppage of the operation of the company until their demands were met. In their placards, the protesters expressed anger over the alleged nonchalant attitudes of the management of the company, which they alleged have continued to pay deaf ears to their plights. Some of the placards read ” NOSL has trespassed into our land without consulting us” ” You have destroyed our means of livelihood” “We have been made to suffer unduly in our own land” among others. The village head of Ukpana, Chief Ranzi Bassey, who spoke with journalists after the protest lamented the massive destruction of their crops and economic trees, destruction of buildings and structures, noise pollution and others which warranted the village council to notify NOSL through their community Attorney–AIbom Oil Producing Community Development Network, AKIPCON, to no avail. He said, “Ukpana people have been taken for granted since November 2019 when NOSL forcefully entered and cleared larger hectares of their farmlands, destroyed our houses, economic trees, food crops, building and structures, ancestral shrines /deities, fishing framing, streams, swamps, earth graves and tombstones with attendants health and human rights consequences”. Chief Bassey said a lot of creeks, streams and swamps have been seriously bulldozed and sand-filled without the consent of villagers. Also speaking, one of the protesters who identified himself as Joseph Israel lamented the economic hardship and insecurity posed on the youth of the community who have no alternative means of livelihood following the destruction inflicted on them by NOSL. According to him ” the community has suffered untold hardship, unwanted trespass and destruction through oil exploration activities going on in the area. The massive destruction occurred during the construction of an access road to the appraisal well drilling site at the company’s operational base.” Read the full article

OzTimes Explains: #PutYourOnionsOut
For those unaware, back in the days before coronavirus was even a whisper of a thing, the political climate in Australia was somewhat volatile, but in a different way than it is today. In those days, from 2013 to 2015, Tony Abbott was Prime Minister and we all rode dinosaurs to work. Only one of those statements is true.
Before 2013, back in the distant past of 2009, Tony Abbott was the leader of the Liberal Party (1), Leader of the Opposition, and Member of Parliament for the electorate (division or seat) of Warringah, located in northern Sydney. He’s well-known and well-disliked for many of his notorious public gaffes such as referring to living in remote indigenous communities as a “lifestyle choice” (Mar, 2015), his “suppository of all wisdom” (Aug, 2013) blunder (2), and his condescending comments about what the “housewives of Australia” need to understand about power bills while doing the ironing (Feb, 2010). None of these have been quite as attention-grabbing as the not one, but two instances of eating raw onion (or vegetables related to onions) on camera.
The first instance occurred in 2011, at a farm in Queensland, where Mr Abbott was filmed chowing down on a spring onion, taking multiple bites as the people around him look on in confusion, amusement, and concern. The second instance occurred in March of 2015, as Mr Abbott was touring Australia’s southern-most state of Tasmania, and was presented with an onion at a business. He proceeded, with the cameras rolling, to take a large bite out of the onion (skin still on), much to the bewilderment of both the farmer and Australians nation-wide. He was momentarily mocked for these incidents, sparking the hashtag #oniongate, and being dubbed Minister for Onion Breath by cartoonist Jon Kudelka. However, this is only the lead-up to the defining moment in his career.
The defining moment, the moment when Tony Abbott shone the brightest. That moment was when Malcolm Turnbull announced he would challenge Mr Abbott for the leadership of the Liberal Party in September of 2015. And thus, the Australian internet mourned (rejoiced), and in our mourning, we put our onions on the doorstep to honour a fallen onion-eating leader and tagged it #PutYourOnionsOut. Onions were sat upon steps, hung in their bags on doorknobs, and placed by front doors. Then there was no more weeping and gnashing of teeth. We went on with our days, and Mr Abbott vacated the Prime Ministership and went to the backbench.
This was not the onion’s last hurrah. Fast-forwarding to May of 2019, and a federal election is being held. The seat of Warringah is up for grabs. Voting comes and goes, and when the results are announced, Mr Abbott finds himself without a job, losing his seat which prior to that election was considered a safe Liberal seat. And again, the Australian internet rejoiced. No longer would we be subject to mildly insane comments from a member of the notorious backbench gang. The onion memorial was revived once more as Australians paid tribute to the former Minister for Onion Breath, and then all collectively said ‘good riddance’. We were free… and then we passed our problems to someone else, when the British government adopted him as advisor to the Board of Trade.
And so ends the tale of Tony Abbott, Minister for Onion Breath, and onion-eater extraordinaire. May he rest in obscurity.
Footnotes:
(1)  Not actually liberal in any way.
(2)  A suppository is a delivery method for medications, usually taken anally.
