Hi I was wondering if I could request either a feysand or rowaelin x reader? About how the reader is insecure and a really nice person and is like friends with everyone. And theres this one toxic friend of hers that like makes her believe that Rowaelin or feysand don't care about her because they don't spend eough time with her. Because feysand or rowaelin are really busy with their duties they don't have time for the reader and are really stresses about something so when the reader asks if they could take a bit of time off to spend time with the reader they snap at her? And you could maybe continue of from their if that okay? Could it have like a fluffy ending?
Sorry if thats too long and I really love your writing by the way !
how long will I bleed
Feysand x Reader
Summary: Tired of being ignored, reader finally reaches her limit.
Warnings: anxiety
A/N: ahh thank you! and please don't be sorry! I haven’t written feysand in a while so I apologize if it's a bit off, thank you for the request :)
“How often do you actually see them?”
“Every day,” you frowned, not sure where she was going with this.
“I know, I know. You sleep in their bed.” Their bed? As far as you were concerned, it belonged to all three of you. “How often do they spend time with you, besides what they’re obligated to?”
Obligated. That didn’t sit right with you, and whether she meant it or not - your friend was striking a deep insecurity, tucked away in your subconscious.
“I don’t mean it in a bad way,” she patted a hand on your shoulder, you fought the urge to flinch. Absolutely she meant it that way. “Just something to think about.” Right now, it’s the very last thing you want to think about now. Thankfully, she prattled on about something else.
-
For a while, you only watched. Observed. After some time passed, you subtly tried to nudge towards spending more time together. But, they were always busy, always tired, always had an obligation.
Obligations that ranged from formal events in hewn city, to gatherings with some of their friends either here or from other courts. Gatherings you didn’t attend, mainly because you couldn’t tell if you were invited. There was never an explicit, come with us, or we want you there. It started to feel like they didn’t care.
Actually see them. Obligated. Their bed. The words from your friend echoed like an ugly melody. Each week, she’d bring it up again. Each time, you brushed it off or shut it down. Reducing the time you spent with her would be the smart thing to do, but you couldn’t find it in you to cut her off like that. Even with the subtle digs and harsh comments, she’d been with you since before your relationship with the High Lord and Lady, and ending your friendship felt like breaking away from the past too much.
It took you a few months to accept that if you wanted it to change, you needed to tell them.
“Do you think we could spend some time together?” you asked over breakfast, pointedly keeping your eyes on your plate.
“That’s what we’re doing, isn’t it?” Rhys sounded vaguely amused. Briefly flicking your eyes to him, the angle of his head told you he was already glancing at the clock.
“Maybe … maybe we could take a day off together?” You couldn’t remember the last time you spent an entire day together, just the three of you.
Feyre’s mouth pressed into a tight line, “I don’t think we’ll be able to.”
“I can work around your schedule,” it would be easy enough for you to get time off from work.
“We don’t have time to spare,” she snapped. Spare. Feyre didn’t mean it, but it felt like she was calling you a spare. Their second choice, always coming behind compared to the two of them. A small tear welled in the corner of your eye. “I didn’t mean it like that,” she said, a tad more gently. Rhys glanced at the clock again, then back to Feyre, eyes glazing.
Lost enough in your own spiral, you didn’t care that they were having a silent conversation in front of you. After a few minutes, they finally deigned to speak aloud.
“We have to leave for Court business. We’ll be back in a week.”
“Oh.” How long have they known about this trip? You didn’t want to ask. “Alright,” you finally said, throat bobbing. “When do you go?”
“In the next few minutes,” Rhys looked distracted.
Fine, that was fine. At least they told you before they left.
“I’ll miss you,” you tried. It was like your words floated right over them, only getting a gentle smile from Feyre, your words echoed with little sincerity. Rhys offered you a half-smile, and a gentle caress against your mind. They each kissed you before they left, winnowing on the spot to … they hadn’t even told you where they were going. Maybe your friend was right. If they cared, they would’ve made time for you.
Nice, you were always nice. That’s how everyone described you - kind, nice, gentle, a variety of synonyms. At this point, nice started to feel another word for pushover. You threw your heart out, only from them to stomp over it, not recognizing the trail of blood in their wake. The worst is, they weren’t doing it on purpose. Crushing you was an unintentional, careless, and passive habit. It was their default.
This time, they’d pushed you right to the edge, to a place they’d actually have to try to drag you back from.
A week was more than enough time to move out and crash with your cousin. She didn’t ask too many prying questions, only offered up her home and spare room.
-
Rhys was excited to see you. He did feel a bit guilty at how they shot down your idea, how they had to leave you with such little notice. Time, that’s all you’d asked for, and they could manage that. If not this month, then the next. Stress had gotten the best of both of them recently, what felt like a thousand different negotiations to go through, a plethora of contracts and trade negotiations to review, left little time to spend with you, beyond the brief moment over breakfast occasionally, or before bed. Until you’d mentioned it, until he had some spare moments to reflect, Rhys didn’t realize just how bad it had gotten.
He knew something was wrong as soon as they entered the Riverhouse. Your scent was … stale, and faint. Like you hadn’t been here in a week. Maybe you’d gone to stay with your cousin or a friend, a big house can be lonely by yourself. That’s what he probably would’ve done. Rhys tried to extend a mental bridge, to reach your mind, but was greeted with a wall of stone. A wall he’d taught you, designed to keep him out.
“Can you reach her?” He asked Feyre.
A few seconds pause. She shook her head.
Walking through the house, he carefully looked for any signs of distress. Could someone have broken in here and taken you? His mind went to the worst case scenario, heart beginning to race.
A note, pinned under the salt shaker on their breakfast table.
I’m tired of being pushed aside.
Sorry to leave like this, but it’s for the best.
Two lines, not even your name signed at the bottom. A small spot smudged the last word, like a tear had dropped onto it. Hurt, anger, betrayal, fear, and regret flooded him at once.
-
It was the worst and best week of your life. Worst, because you missed them more than you wanted to, and they kept showing up in your dreams - uninvited. Best, because you finally felt free. With the pressure of a falling relationship gone, you could breathe again.
Anticipation filled you as the week came to the end. Would they try to find you? Would they care enough to? The question you really needed to ask yourself, is if you’d take them back. After their return, you’d learn just how much you meant to them. You’d learn if you truly were the spare.
Eight days after you left, you dragged yourself out of bed for an early shift, regretting the extra glass of wine you indulged in last night.
Slipping through the alley, around the back door, you didn’t notice him at first. Fumbling with your keys, you finally managed to slide it into the lock when you heard your name. The voice that had haunted your dreams for the last week.
A squeak, and keys clattered down on the cobblestone, the sound echoing. Bracing your hand on the door, you took deep breaths to slow your heart, before turning to face him.
Rhys stood there, looking like he hadn’t slept at all, blue-purple half moons under his eyes, messy hair like he’d been running his hands through it. He raised one hand, a small piece of paper balanced between two fingers. Your note. It was quite brief, but you’d been angry at the time and couldn’t find it in yourself to come up with flowery words.
“For the best,” he quoted. “Do you really believe that?”
Oh, that put you right on the defensive. “I said it, didn’t I?”
The paper vanished, and he tucked his hands into his pockets. “I don’t want it to end like this.”
It. One tiny word to sum up three years. “But you want it to end?” your voice came out small.
“No,” he said harshly, closing the space between the two of you. “I don’t.” You didn’t reply. You didn’t know what to say. “When do you get off?” He finally asked. Gentle claws poked at your mind, but you slammed your shields back up.
“Two,” then your coworker would come take over.
“We’ll be here,” he reached out, running his thumb over your cheek. It took all of your self control not to lean into the touch. Taking a step back, he winnowed.
That entire morning and afternoon, you were … off, to say the least. But, work helped relieve some of your anxiety, falling into the monotonous tasks you’d done for years.
We’ll be here. What did he expect to happen? What did you want to happen?
By the time two came around, your coworker arrived a few minutes early, you were a ball of anxiety, your entire body tense, heart beating fast, mind swirling.
“There’s two someones waiting out there for you,” she nudged your shoulder, tilting her chin towards the alley. Giving her a tight smile, you gathered up the rest of your things, to take a few breaths. In and out. You could do this.
Feyre’s eyes lit up as you swung the door open, excitement tinged with a bit of melancholy. You chose to focus on the excitement.
The rest of the afternoon passed quickly, and even with the lingering hint of resentment you felt more loved than you had in months. Part of you recognized that might be a red flag, that even a few hours of attention could have that effect on you, but it was easily brushed aside.
You were nestled between the two of them, on a bench overlooking the Sidra. Rhys’s hand ran lazy strokes up and down your thigh, Feyre’s arm curled over your shoulders as you leaned into her. Gentle currents rolled back and forth, bouncing off of the stone walls caging in the river, music floating through the streets. Loud enough to hear clearly, but not so loud that it could drown out any conversation.
“Come home with us,” she said softly.
A moment of hesitation, but you knew you couldn’t resist.
“I will.”

Forever Entwined
~ Eris Vanserra X Reader
Tumblr media
The third and final part in the One Last Night Mini Series.
Series masterlist
Summary: Now free from the cruel grasp of his father, Eris is the new High Lord of the Autumn Court. After reluctantly avoiding you for a few days while his new power settles, Eris takes it upon himself to show you just how much he missed you when he returns.
Warnings: Smut!!! MDNI 18+ piv, oral (f receiving), fireplay? (Think Rowaelin beach scene)
It had been five torturous days since you last saw Eris. Since you last held his shaking form on the floor of the throne room. The transition began soon after his father’s death, Beron’s formidable powers now flowing through Eris’s veins. The male had known enough about the process, known about how a High Lord coming into their power can bring forth their primal instincts, how it can heighten your emotions until you’re uncontrollable and insatiable. The unpredictability of how he would act was enough for him to beg his mother to take you away as soon his family crashed into the room, shock across their faces as they took in the sight of a bloodied Eris and his deceased father.
Doing as her eldest son commanded she grabbed you by your arm, ripping you from the growling male as she tried to remove you from the room. You didn’t make it easy for her, trying to break her firm grip so you could run back to a now screaming Eris. The Autumn Prince had begun to writhe in pain, his body trying to fight the invasive powers forcing their way into his system, contaminating his very being until it flowed through him as naturally as blood.
It was agony, leaving Eris while he was in such a fragile state, but his mother continued to walk you away from the scene. Whispering words of support, of how Eris would come find you when the transformation was complete and her son had control over his senses.
That was five days ago. You were aware of the new duties he would be forced to endure as High Lord, especially if he wanted there to be a smooth transition of leadership. It would take time to weed out the thorns his father had nurtured in Autumn during his centuries of control.
His disheveled mother had shown up at the door of your bed chambers two nights ago, face drawn with fatigue as she no doubt had spent the past few days tending to her struggling son. Her news, despite how her appearance may have told you otherwise, was good. Eris’s powers had finally settled and the agony he had been forced to endure had come to an end.
Foolishly you believed that this would mean the male would come and seek you out. That he would desire to speak about what had unfolded the night he left just as much as you did. Unfortunately, luck wasn’t on your side. Two long days had passed since his mother arrived at your door and there was still no sign of Eris.
You tried to search for him, wandering past his office multiple times a day and occasionally hovering by the throne room. However, he was never present anywhere you went and a horrible sinking feeling in your gut told you that the new High Lord had been avoiding you.
A cruel voice in your ear, one only you could hear, whispered twisted tales of how the soon to be Autumn King thought himself too good for you now. How you had only acted as a place holder until someone better and newer came along, you merely serving to entertain the male until that day arrived. You scarcely wanted to believe it, cursing the hellish thoughts of your own creation.
You loved Eris and he loved you too, of that you were sure. And so, difficult as it may have been, you continued on with your life. Keeping yourself busy in the hope that it would pass the time along faster, wasting away the minutes until you would face Eris again. Not having to wait too much longer, as the moment finally arrived soon after you returned to your usual routine.
~~~~~
He made his presence known by a firm knock at your door. Surprise crossing your face as you answered the call, finding it strange how something so ordinary could seem so unusual for you. All that time you had spent sneaking around and not once did you knock upon the others door before entering, not when that sound could lead to someone discovering your relationship. Yet here he was now, knocking on your door as if it was the most normal thing in the world.
Any anger you had felt for the male drifted away as you absorbed his appearance. High Lord was a good look for Eris, his new powers allowing his skin to softly glow like candlelight. It was hypnotising, his burning ethereality which enabled him to be likened to a dancing flame. Though his new angelic form did nothing to hide the untamed beast waiting in anticipation, reflected in the wide, black pupils of his eyes.
“You’re here” you spoke, voice wavering in anticipation, eyes meeting his burning amber ones, transfixed by the flames dancing within.
“I’m here” he replied, voice thick with the new authority he held.
“Why now?” Your voice broke as you said the words aloud. You knew there was a multitude of reasons he could use to explain his absence, and for him you would understand each and every one of them. But a small part of you just needed to hear it spoken out loud, to be able to fully rid yourself of the fear and doubt which had crawled its way into your life just as soon as Eris had left it.
He took a deep breath before entering your room, pulling the door to as he did so. His actions providing him with the time needed to formulate his words. “I had to,” he explained, warm hands reaching out to hold you by your hips, needing to feel your soft touch to bring himself some stability, “The…the transformation has been so overwhelming.”
“I know that Eris, it’s ok. You don’t need to explain, I wouldn’t want you to go through it again” you spoke, placing a comforting hand on his chest. You could scarcely imagine what he had been through in the past week. Loosing you, having to kill his own father, the once alien powers which now coursed through him like the oxygen he breathes, the unwavering responsibility he held to his court. It was enough to drive anyone mad.
“No…” Eris replied as if reading your thoughts, “i’ve been in agony but not because of the change. No, staying away from you has been the hardest part of all. The torment of not being able to take you in the way I so desperately desired.”
A sharp breath caught in your throat, your fingers grasping onto the material of his loose white shirt, needing to ground yourself before your knees started to tremble at the force of his words, at their implications.
“Then why didn’t you take me?” You asked, failing to hide the slight tremble in your voice at the sight of his frenzied eyes, your lips drifting towards his in your mesmerised state. He twitched slightly, as if fighting some inner demon, and drew his lips away from yours so he could continue to speak before his senses ran away along with his control.
“Because,” he started, gliding a smooth hand up to your cheek so he could cup it, brushing his manicured thumb over your skin which was now blushing from the intensity of his gaze, “as much as I wanted to take you on my bed, rutting into you for hours like a feral beast, or devouring your taste as I worshipped you on my throne, I couldn’t. Not while I was so senseless I couldn’t offer you the apology you deserve.”
Despite his good intentions, you would be a fool to deny that you wouldn’t have minded enacting his fantasies. The image of the High Lord on his knees, his head between your thighs as you sat on his iron throne, was enough to bring a rush of pulsating need directly to your core.
Eris no doubt smelt your ever-growing arousal, a low growl escaping from his mouth as he attempted to reign in control of his impulses so he could provide you with the apology he came to deliver.
“I don’t regret it” Eris continued with his speech, but the tightening of his grip on your waist, enough to leave bruises in its wake, told you enough. His hunger for you in this moment was just as strong as yours was for him, “Telling you not to wait for me was the right thing to do. It was the only way to ensure you didn’t live a life of misery.”
You went to speak, to tell him how it didn’t matter and your life would have been miserable either way, after all there was no happiness without Eris. However, the male interrupted you, needing to get the words out whilst he was able to, whilst he was still in control.
“I want it all” he pleaded, “The cottage, the garden, the children. I want it all with you. It has to be you, if you want it that is.” The raw emotion that carried in the words Eris voiced was enough to bring tears to your eyes. “Yes” you didn’t hesitate to answer, wrapping your arms around his large frame to close the gap between you, his arms completely engulfing your small frame, “I want it too Eris. I need it. I need you.”
~~~~~
Your words were enough to snap the tether holding him back, the male lunging towards your neck, desperately leaving kisses onto the warm skin. His lips burned against you, branding you, marking you as his as he sucked harshly on the exposed skin, leaving a trail of purple bruises in his wake. His white hot hands exploring every inch of your body that he could possibly reach, your own doing the same to his.
The thirst for your palms to run across the smooth expanse of his bare skin was too great to ignore, breaking Eris’s assault of your neck to hurriedly tear his shirt over his head. Once the article of clothing was removed it was your turn to gift small bites and kisses to his trembling chest, following the path up to the sweet spot you were all to familiar with at the base of his neck, a pleased groan breaking from his throat once you found it, suckling against his warm skin.
His wandering hands found the back of your dress, nimble fingers brushing over the laces of your corset. Too impatient to break the moment and spend the time unlacing them, Eris ignited a glowing flame and set the dress alight. The blazing flames licking at your naked skin as the material turned to ash.
The golden flickers absorbing you in their heat didn’t burn, instead a pleasurable tingling sensation followed in their wake. Your wide eyes locking on to Eris’s own, black with lust at the sight of his fire devouring you, allowing you to burn brightly like you were a spirit of the sun.
Not needing to fear the heat you were emitting, his hands travelled to your breasts, allowing the tips of his fingers to brush over your sensitive nipples. His hungry lips following suit, closing around your breast and sucking, a strangled moan forcing itself from your mouth at his actions. “My little flame” he crooned as he turned his attention to your other breast, his tongue moving in time with the dancing flames that still engulfed you.
Needing more, the desire to feel him deep inside of you ever growing, you voiced your pleas to Eris, the male totally focussed on littering your breasts with purple marks, running his tongue along them as they formed, “Eris please!”
He stopped his actions at your cry, moving his lips upwards until they were almost touching your own, “What is it you desire, my little flame?” He asked, tantalisingly slow hand roaming down your body and towards your centre. “Is it this?” He teased, allowing his nimble fingers to glide through your soaked folds, thumb brushing against your pulsating clit causing you to cry out with pleasure. Sensitive after having not felt his touch for so long.
“Yes! Please Eris I need to feel you!” You begged, attempting to reach his belt so you could remove his last few items of clothing, mouth salivating at the sight of the bulge present through the fabric. The urge to drop to your knees and take his aching cock into your mouth was overwhelming.
“Hmm…” Eris smirked, laying a gentle kiss to your cheek as he brought his hand to his mouth to taste your wetness, pulling his fingers from his lips with a satisfied groan, “I think I need to show you just how much I’ve missed you first.”
And with that his mouth finally slanted against yours, pulling you into a burning passionate kiss, his teasing tongue running along the bottom of your lip before forcing its way into your mouth in order to deepen the kiss. From your position, the bare skin of your breasts pressed against his enticingly warm chest, you could feel his hard cock against you, begging for attention. Seeking some form of relief, you attempted to grind yourself against him and chase your pleasure yourself, frantically moving your pulsing body against his.
Your desperation pleased the male who let out a dark chuckle, breaking the kiss to whisper against your panting lips, “patience my flame.” His hands drifted towards your ass, rubbing the soft flesh tenderly before lifting you up, your legs wrapping around his waist tightly as he carried you towards your bed, his cock teasingly brushing against your core as you moved.
“Eris I need you” you whined as he laid you onto the silky sheets, crawling onto the bed after you and positioning himself between your open legs. Laying sweet kisses against the supple skin of your thighs, occasionally sucking the skin into a harsh kiss which would no doubt leave a bruise painted on you. Once he reached your core, heated breath panting against it, Eris looked up to you through hooded lids, his eyes full of awe as his voice twisted in an animalistic growl, “I want you to come apart on my tongue before you do on my cock little flame.”
With that his tongue licked a long, broad stripe against your soaking folds, a gruff moan leaving the males mouth from the taste of you. His hips pressing into the mattress to relieve some of the pressure he was feeling, rough hands flying up to your own waist to hold you down as your back arched off the bed in pleasure. Mind transported into another reality as his tongue performed wanders as it moved against your core, lapping up every bit of you as he could. Devouring you like a man starved.
Loud moans of approval escaped your lips, eyes slamming shut in bliss as one of his hands moved down from your waist to join his mouth in its actions, Eris inserting a long finger inside of you until you felt the cold metal of his rings at its base. You gasped at the sensation, his tongue moving to flick against your clit. Wave after wave of unquenchable pleasure flushed through your system, your hips starting to move against his face in time with his lapping tongue to chase after the release you desired. Eris’s pleasured growls vibrating against your core as his face became drenched with your wetness.
Understanding your body’s reaction as you grew closer to completion, Eris inserted another delectable finger. Curling it deliciously inside of you, until he was met with a cry of delight as he found the sweet spongy spot inside of you. Wringing every ounce of pleasure from you as you squirmed at his touch.
Unintelligible words of praise slipping from your mouth as your orgasm washed over you, insides tightening and writhing at your satisfaction. A shaky hand flying to grasp Eris’s hair, the male still happily devouring you as you rode your orgasm to completion. Skilled tongue continuing to lap lazily at your clit once your high had sated.
Impatient and still needing more, needing to be brought to completion by his merciless cock, you tugged on his auburn hair, pulling him from his position between your shaking thighs until he was face to face with you once more. Your content eyes meeting his wild ones. You palmed him through his trousers, drawing a deep whimper from the male as you did so, the sound causing your hands to fly to his belt in order to relieve him of his clothes so he would be as equally bare as you.
He stopped you, grabbing your wrists before placing them on either side of your head, locking them in place, a cocky smirk on his face as he looked to your desperate one, “allow me my love.”
Eris burst into flames.
A burning white-hot wildfire, which just as he had done for you, burned the fabric until it fell from his glowing skin. Snakes of sentient flames travelling down his arms and joining with yours before they began to dance against your skin once more. An amazed laugh broke from your lips, Eris resembling a burning phoenix before you, the mass of flames which swirled around him resembled a pair of fiery wings.
Your appreciation of the god-like view of the male before you was cut short, laugh twisting into a strangled cry as Eris lined his painfully leaking cock up against your entrance, pressing the head of it into you as a flash of pleasure raced through you at its presence at your core. It didn’t matter how many times you had laid together, you still felt the delicious stretch of pain every time the man entered you, his large cock almost tearing you in two.
A hearty groan upon his lips, Eris entered you fully, slowly inserting himself until he was fully sheathed, allowing you some time to adjust to his size as he kissed your lips, distracting you from the twinge of pain. Once you were ready, craving the rough pounding of his cock, you bucked your hips against him signalling him to start moving.
You thrusted in sync, finding a matching rhythm instantly as if you were twin flames, prayers of adoration for the other person leaving each of your lips as you moved. Eris burned like a roaring fire, the extra heat he was letting off proving a delightful tingle that edged you closer and closer to release.
Needing more you groaned, “Harder, my Lord.” Eris’s powerful thrusts stuttered at your words, a feral moan slipping from his lips as you called him by his title. The male having to still himself and take in a deep breath to prevent himself from spilling into you before you climaxed himself. Once he felt he had regained enough control to continue he spoke. “Say it again” he begged through gritted teeth, wanting nothing more than to hear the words from your lips again.
“Fuck me harder my Lord”
His blazing wildfire burst into an uncontrollable inferno, the burning flames now covering the entirety of the bed, the silk sheets transforming into ash as your passionate embrace fuelled the crackling plumes. Eris pulled out fully before snapping his hips back into you roughly until he was once more consumed by you in entirety, delivering powerful thrust after powerful thrust. Cries of bliss flowing from each of your mouths.
Your hands, now free from his hold, moved to the expanse of muscle which rippled along his back, nails scratching deep red lines of passion into him. If Eris was to mark your body as his, you would do the same to him.
He worked fast, pounding away until you were completely consumed by your release. The force of your climax so strong that the image of Eris above you blurred in your vision, your sight being replaced with the starting blue flame of heated pleasure flashing across your eyes.
Eris continued to mercilessly thrust into your trembling body as he chased to meet his own high, failing to bite back the strangled curses which left his mouth as release washed over him. Thick ropes of cum filling you, leaking from your folds as his thrusts slowed and he removed his cock from your sensitive core.
The flames vanished into nothing as he collapsed against you whilst panting heavily, both your bodies covered in a film of sweat. He cupped your cheek as he admired your spent form, the way your hair was clinging to your forehead, the red flush covering your cheeks from the heat he had radiated, your parted lips soft and swollen from the loving kisses and bites shared between you.
Eris looked at you as if you were his entire world, as if you were the reason his flame burned as brightly as it did. Your presence being his fuel.
“I will never leave you again” Eris swore once his breath had returned, sealing the promise with a tender kiss upon your lips, “I meant it when I said I wanted everything with you.”
“It’s ok Eris” you smiled softly, fingers brushing against his cheek as he closed his eyes in contentment, “thanks to you we have forever.”
And that was the truth, there was no need for you to hide your relationship any longer. You and Eris were free to be together, to live the life you had planned together all those years ago whilst hidden behind closed doors. You would never have to hide again.
The fire which burned between the two of you was eternal, and you would cherish it for as long as it flickered.

Head pounding, you groaned in pain, groggily blinking awake as you took in your surroundings. A warm fire roared from a hearth across the room, situated next to the chairs and couch that made up the seating area - Aelin asleep in one of the chairs, curled in an awkward position with her legs swung over the armrest so that she was facing you.
You registered that you were in a guest room of the Lochans’ castle, where you’d been staying during your meetings with Aedion, Lorcan, and Elide over barrier precautions. Memories flashed in your mind as you fell back weakly against the pillows - you recalled the sudden attack, raiders from the Frozen Wastes who had somehow crossed the mountains in an attempt to overtake Perranth.
Recalling the injury in your side from one of the raiders, you instinctively reached for the wounded area only to release another loud groan at the pain. In the corner of your vision, Aelin stirred, eyes widening as the two of you made eye contact. “You’re awake,” she cried, voice choking on the words. You smiled softly at her, your own voice scratching as you attempted to speak to her.
Aelin leapt from her chair as you sputtered out a cough, bringing a glass of water from the nightstand to your lips. Putting the glass back down, she stroked your hair softly, taking a seat on the edge of the bed. “How are you feeling?” You took a deep breath, still coming back to your senses. “I’m in pain, but-“
You were interrupted by Rowan opening the door, a tray with two plates of food in his hand as he noticed your wakened state, tension visibly dissipating from his shoulders as he did so. “Hi,” you whispered at him with a small smile. Rowan sat down the tray next to your water, rushing over to take your head in his hands, pressing a lingering kiss to your forehead. He maintained that stoic expression he usually did, but a torrent of emotions swam in his eyes, filled with concern.
Aelin reached up to take your hand in hers. “You were saying?” Refocusing your attention to her, you nodded. “I’m in some pain, but it’s manageable. I’m just trying to remember what happened.” A muscle ticked in Rowan’s jaw. Barely keeping a leash on his anger, he directed the question at you, “you don’t remember how you rushed into battle? How you jumped in front of a blade meant for another soldier?”
A flurry of guilt, grief, and other emotions overcame you as your lip wobbled under Rowan’s intense gaze. Aelin held up a hand, silencing him before he could lecture you further. “You were the kind, brave person that we know and love.” She glanced at Rowan pointedly before continuing, “we’ve been very worried. You were mostly unconscious for nearly a week.” Your eyes widened, jaw slack as you registered her words. A week? You must have been close to death’s door for an injury to take you out for so long.
You held back tears, looking at Aelin and then Rowan. “I’m sorry, I know that must have been scary for the two of you,” you whispered. Rowan’s eyes softened then, and he crouched down beside where you laid as he took your hand, pressing a kiss to it. “You have nothing to apologize for, love. Here, try to eat some of this food while it’s warm.”
He turned, picking up the tray as Aelin crawled into bed beside you, taking a plate for herself as Rowan sat on the other side of you, helping you eat the warm soup and bread. A knock on the door sounded before Aedion entered, “I just wanted to check and see how you’re do-“
Rowan cut him off with a growl, Aelin flashing her canines as their protective instincts took over. Aedion held up his hands in a placating position, giving you a playful smile as he retreated out of the room. “I’m glad you’re okay. They’ve been like this all week,” he teased with an eye roll as Rowan snarled once more in warning.
The door clicked shut, the three of you alone once more as Aelin finished her food, snuggling into your side as you put an arm around her and leaned your head on Rowan, eyes drooping once more now that you were sated with food. “Uh huh,” Rowan tsked, helping you sit up. “No falling asleep yet. You’ve been asleep for days, and need a proper bath. I’ll be back for you in a moment.”
You scoffed softly under your breath, turning to Aelin as he left the room. She smirked at you, flicking your nose. “He is right, you know. You do stink.” Leaning in to press a kiss below your ear, Aelin murmured against your neck, “but I’ll help you clean up.”

The parallels
Others made posts about the ship scenes that parallel to the Elriel Bonus scene and at the end I saw that how all of them go well together so I wanted to make this post combining all of them together to show they parallel to Elriel. I'm only adding the parts at least 3+ or more of them parallel each other. There are some parts only 2 of the ships parallel each other so you can go to the linked posts at the end to see how they parallel to elriel. 🫡 Enjoy. (Side not: cc3 spoilers for daynight...I dont count parallels as spoilers so I didnt add read more to this so you have been warned)
The throat scenes
Elriel
The faelights gilded Elain's unbound hair, making her glow like the sun at dawn. She halted, her breath catching in her throat. “I..." He watched her swallow. She clutched a small gift in her hands. "I was coming to leave this on your pile of presents. I forgot to give it to you earlier."
Quinlar
She swallowed, and he tracked every movement of her throat. The raindrop that ran over her neck, her pulse pounding delicately beneath it. Before he could react, she leaned forward, wrapping her arms around him. Held him tightly. “Tonight sucked,” she said against his soaked chest.
Rowaelin
He watched her throat bob as she swallowed. “It’s your call then, Rowan. Do as you see fit.”
Daynight
“Lidia,” he murmured, in front of her at last, and she closed her eyes, the pulse in her throat fluttering.
Neck scene
Elriel
He knew it was wrong, but there he was, sliding the necklace around her. Letting his scarred fingers touch her immaculate skin. Letting them brush the side of her throat, savoring the velvet-soft texture. Elain shivered, and he took a damn long time fastening the clasp. Azriel's fingers lingered at her nape, atop the first knob of her spine. Slowly, Elain pivoted into his touch. Until his palm lay flat against her neck.
"Yes," he said, his thumb sweeping in long strokes along the side of her throat.
Quinlar
Hunt chuckled, letting himself bury his face against her neck. “So am I.”
He couldn’t tell if his name was a warning or a request or something more. Didn’t care as he grazed his nose against the rain-slick column of her neck. Fuck, she smelled good. He did it again, unable to help himself or get enough of that scent. She tipped her chin up slightly. Just enough to expose more of her neck to him. Hel, yes. Hunt almost groaned the words as he let himself nuzzle into that soft, delicious neck, as greedy as a fucking vampyr to be there, smell her, taste her.
Daynight
She kept her eyes closed, her pulse still flickering. So he took his other hand and tilted her head to the side. Leaned down and brushed his mouth over that fluttering spot. Her breathing hitched, and his eyes nearly rolled back in his head. She tasted … fuck. He needed more. His teeth grazed the soft skin of her throat, and his tongue skimmed along the space just under her ear. His cock throbbed in answer. Her body loosened, pliant in his hands, and her head tipped a little further to the side. An invitation. He licked up the column of her throat, hand drifting from her waist down to her ass—
Nessian
Until Cassian lowered his face an inch, and grazed the tip of his nose along her neck. Beneath her hand, his chest heaved upward as he inhaled a great, greedy breath of her scent. Too far. She shouldn’t have let herself go this far with him, let him this close. Yet she couldn’t withdraw. Couldn’t do anything but let him brush his nose over her neck again. The urge to press her body into his, to feel his warmth and hardness grinding into her, nearly overrode every rational thought.
Chaolrene
Yrene studied the room, and Chaol found his hand drifting from hers. Sliding up her bare shoulder, to rest along her neck. Her skin was soft as sun-warmed velvet. His thumb stroked up the side of her throat, so near that slender scar, and she cut her eyes to him. There was warning there—warning and yet … He knew the warning was not directed at him. But herself. Yrene breathed, “She …” He couldn’t resist a second stroke of his thumb down the side of her neck. Her throat brushed against his hand as she swallowed again. “She is concerned about the threat of fire.”
Scent
Elriel
Her arousal drifted up to him, and his eyes nearly rolled back in his head at the sweet scent.
Nessian
Beneath her hand, his chest heaved upward as he inhaled a great, greedy breath of her scent.
Rowaelin
Her sodden hair tumbled down, the scent of her—jasmine and lemon verbena and crackling embers —rising above the smell of almonds to caress his nose, his senses. Rowan stood with his queen in the rain, breathing in her scent, and let her steal his warmth for as long as she needed.
Quinlar
He couldn’t tell if his name was a warning or a request or something more. Didn’t care as he grazed his nose against the rain-slick column of her neck. Fuck, she smelled good.
Daynight
“Lidia,” he murmured, in front of her at last, and she closed her eyes, the pulse in her throat fluttering. Her scent shifted—like flowers unfurling under the morning sun. That scent was pure arousal.
Made no move
Elriel
Elain bit her lower lip, and it took every ounce of Azriel's restraint to keep from putting his own teeth there. "I should go," Elain said, but made no move to leave. "Yes," he said, his thumb sweeping in long strokes along the side of her throat.
Quinlar
Bryce’s fingers curled against his spine, exploring and gentle. Every single one of his senses narrowed to that touch. Came roaring awake. “We should get out of the rain,” she murmured. “We should,” he replied. And made no move. “Hunt.”
Chaolrene
She laid her hand atop his own but made no move to remove his touch from her neck.
PERMISSION
Elriel
Azriel’s hand slid up her neck, burying in her thick hair. Tilting her face the way he wanted it. Elain’s mouth parted slightly, her eyes scanning his before fluttering shut. Offer and permission. He nearly groaned with relief and need as he lowered his head toward hers.
Nessian
Cassian’s hands remained at his sides, though. As if waiting for her to give permission.
Daynight
Her body loosened, pliant in his hands, and her head tipped a little further to the side. An invitation. He licked up the column of her throat, hand drifting from her waist down to her ass—
Quinlar
Bryce’s fingers curled against his spine, exploring and gentle. Every single one of his senses narrowed to that touch. Came roaring awake. “We should get out of the rain,” she murmured. “We should,” he replied. And made no move. “Hunt.” He couldn’t tell if his name was a warning or a request or something more. Didn’t care as he grazed his nose against the rain-slick column of her neck. Fuck, she smelled good. He did it again, unable to help himself or get enough of that scent. She tipped her chin up slightly. Just enough to expose more of her neck to him.
Rowaelin
She waited for him to pull back, but he just stared at her—stared into her in that way he always did. Friends, but more. So much more, and she’d known it longer than she wanted to admit. Carefully, she stroked her thumb across his cheekbone, his face slick with the rain.
DIDNT CARE
Elriel
It had never gone this far. They'd exchanged looks, the occasional brush of their fingers, but never this. Never blatant, unrestricted touching. Wrong -- it was so wrong. He didn't care.
Daynight
He didn’t care that they were in the middle of a hallway with his awful cousins running amok. He slid a hand onto her waist, nearly groaning at the steep curve, the way it fit his hand perfectly.
Quinlar
He couldn’t tell if his name was a warning or a request or something more. Didn’t care as he grazed his nose against the rain-slick column of her neck. Fuck, she smelled good.
Nessian
Too far. She shouldn’t have let herself go this far with him, let him this close. Yet she couldn’t withdraw. Couldn’t do anything but let him brush his nose over her neck again. The urge to press her body into his, to feel his warmth and hardness grinding into her, nearly overrode every rational thought.
Males are horny lol
Elriel
He needed to know what the skin of her neck tasted like. What those perfect lips tasted like. Her breasts. Her sex. He needed her coming on his tongue -- Azriel's cock strained behind his pants, aching so fiercely he could hardly think. He prayed she didn't peer down. Prayed she didn't understand the shift in his scent. He had only allowed himself these thoughts in the dead of night. Had only allowed his hand to fist his cock and think about her then, when even his shadows had gone to sleep. How that beautiful face might appear as he entered her, what sounds she'd make.
Daynight
He needed more. His teeth grazed the soft skin of her throat, and his tongue skimmed along the space just under her ear. His cock throbbed in answer.
Quinlar
He didn’t let himself think, not as he brushed his lips over the spot he’d nuzzled. She arched slightly against him. Into the hardness that ached behind the reinforced leather of his battle-suit. Swallowing another groan against her neck, Hunt tightened his arms around her warm, soft body, and ran his hands downward, toward that perfect, sweet ass that had tortured him since day fucking one, and—
Chaolrene
Yrene’s eyes dropped to his mouth, and every instinct, every bit of focus, narrowed on that movement. Every part of him came to aching attention. And the sensation of it, as he casually adjusted his jacket over his lap, was better than an ice bath. The smoke—the opiates. It was some sort of aphrodisiac, some lulling of common sense.
The ending
A little bit explanation here...every scene ends with either they are interrupted by someone or their inner conflict causes them to stop. I will explain as we go.
Elriel
He nearly groaned with relief and need as he lowered his head toward hers. Azriel. Rhys's voice thundered through him, halting him mere inches from Elain's sweet mouth. Azriel. Unrelenting command filled his name, and Azriel looked up. Rhysand stood atop the staircase. Glowering down at them. My office. Now. Rhys vanished, and Azriel was left standing before Elain, who still awaited his kiss. His stomach twisted as he pulled his hand from her hair and stepped back. Forced himself to say, "This was a mistake.” She opened her eyes, hurt and confusion warring there before she whispered, "I’m sorry." “You don't-- Don't apologize,” he managed to say. "Never apologize. It's I who should…” He shook his head, unable to stand the bleakness he'd brought to her expression. "Goodnight.”
We have Rhys stopping them.
Nessian
She couldn’t get a breath down as she drowned in that stare. As low, sensitive parts of her tightened and began throbbing, her breasts becoming heavy and aching. His nostrils flared, scenting that, too. She couldn’t. She couldn’t do this to him. To herself. Couldn’t, couldn’t, couldn’t—
We have Nesta's inner conflict coming between them
Rowaelin
“Rowan,” she breathed, his name a plea and a prayer. She slid her fingers down the side of his tattooed cheek, and— Faster than she could see, he grabbed one wrist and then the other, yanking them away from his face and snarling softly. The world yawned open around her, cold and still.He dropped her hands as if they were on fire, stepping away, those green eyes flat and dull in a way she hadn’t seen for some time now. Her throat closed up even before he said, “Don’t do that. Don’t—touch me like that.” There was a roaring in her ears, a burning in her face, and she swallowed hard. “I’m sorry.” Oh, gods. He was over three hundred years old. Immortal. And she—she … “I didn’t mean—” She backed away a step, toward the door on the other side of the roof. “I’m sorry,” she repeated. “It was nothing.” “Good,” he said, going for the roof door himself. “Fine.” Rowan didn’t say anything else as he stalked downstairs. Alone, she scrubbed at her wet face, at the oily smear of cosmetics. Don’t touch me like that.
We have Rowan's conflict coming between them because of his dead "mate" and all of that plot.
Quinlar
Swallowing another groan against her neck, Hunt tightened his arms around her warm, soft body, and ran his hands downward, toward that perfect, sweet ass that had tortured him since day fucking one, and— The metal door to the roof opened. Hunt already had his gun drawn and aimed toward it as Sabine stepped out and snarled, “Back the fuck up.
Sabine stops them.
Daynight
Her body loosened, pliant in his hands, and her head tipped a little further to the side. An invitation. He licked up the column of her throat, hand drifting from her waist down to her ass— She stiffened. Pulled away. Like she’d caught herself. Remembered who she was. Who he was. He stood there like a fucking moron, panting slightly, cock fully hard and straining against his pants, and she just … stared at him. Wide-eyed. “I …” He had no idea what to say. What to do. His head swam. This female had so much blood on her hands, yet— “Good night,” he rasped, and turned to his own room before he could make a greater fool of himself. She didn’t stop him.
Their inner conflict.
Chaolrene
Yrene was still watching his mouth as if it were a piece of fruit, her uneven breath lifting those lush, high breasts within the confines of her gown. He forced himself to remove his hand from her neck. Forced himself to lean back. Nesryn had to be watching. Had to be wondering what the hell he was doing. He owed her better than this. He owed Yrene better than whatever he had just done, whatever madness—
Chaol's inner conflict.
So at the end all of them are in conflict.

Come on, y'all. Elriel is happening
The recent TIME and Today interviews made one thing clear to me: SJM is interested in exploring new types of relationships in her stories.
One thing I see a lot from Gw*nriels and El*ciens is that "SJM is a fated mates author" and "she always writes couples that don't want to be together at the beginning."
And while, yes, those two things have been true for many of the couples that she's written, to say that's the only thing she capable of/willing to write is insulting imo. And the recent interviews, especially the one with Today, show me that she's ready to explore something new, which only Elriel would give us.
Let's take a look at how her previous couples compare with one another:
Rowaelin - mates + didn't want to be together at first
Feysand - mates + didn't want to be together at first
Nessian - mates + didn't want to be together at first
Elorcan - mates + didn't want to be together at first
Quinlar - mates + didn't want to be together at first
Laedion - mates + didn't want to be together at first
Ridia - mates + didn't want to be together at first
Chaorene - didn't want to be together at first
There's a pattern there for sure, so I can understand why people would assume El*cien is endgame despite evidence to the contrary in the text. They would certainly fit into the "mates + didn't want to be together at first" category. And because of Gwyn's trauma, the same may be true for her as well. Why do we assume she would want to be in a romantic relationship when she's not ready to leave the library yet? Mating bond or no, she has a lot of healing to do without the influence of a male.
But I digress. If SJM is interested in exploring something different than what she's already written time as time again (albeit with variations), Elriel is what's going to deliver.
For the first time, we would have a main couple who want to be together, but instead of the usual internal forces keeping them apart, it's external ones. Political ones.
She's never given us that before. She's never explored a rejected mating bond before. She's never done a secret romance before. All of those things would come with Elriel, whereas the other two ships would just be more variations on the same love story she's already told no less than 7 times.
I genuinely can't understand why people actively don't want Elriel. It doesn't have to be your favorite ship, but to entirely denounce it when it's not only the most logical but also the one that would give us something brand new is insane to me.
Let's not pigeonhole SJM by saying she's only capable of writing one type of love story, especially when she's explicitly telling us she's excited to explore something new.
3 brothers, 3 sisters would be cliche if all three couples were mates, but I think we'll end up with those pairings not because of the mating bond but in spite of it.
Every character reluctantly ending up with their mate is far lazier writing if you ask me.

Contains spoilers for all series:
The Cassian pov hinted at his bond with Nesta.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Azriel pov hinted at his bond with Gwyn.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There were hints for the Rowaelin bond but it wasn't confirmed for a few books.
Hints for the Feysand bond.
Hints for a LoA and Helion bond.
Hints for a Ruhn and Lidia bond.
Even possible hints for a Mor and Eris bond.
And so far, we only have 3 out of 7 confirmed bonds from those mentioned above.
If SJM wants to write a rejected mates story, she's got options. But you know what she currently only has one of?
Elucien is the only pairing who readers got a confirmed bond right out of the gate for, something that makes their bond very unique compared to others.
So why would the author use two of her "never happened before" scenarios and give them both to Elucien? An immediate snapping of the bond AND a rejected mates story?
I think it would make more sense to explore each of those setups independent of one another because they're both so angsty on their own that there's no need to double up on the torment for a single pairing.
A rejected mating bond means that both parties will forever feel the tug to one another and additionally may result in the male being destined to suffer on a level the female might not.
A bond snapping immediately for two characters who are strangers, one who was engaged to another and one who believed he had a mate but witnessed her death is an entirely different, but no less angsty, situation.
For the first and only time, we have the chance to read a characters POV as they're fully aware of their bond before possibly falling in love. A chance to see the inner turmoil as it remains unaccepted (something most would have loved to have Rhys's POV on).
We already had some of that in ACOWAR and it was everything. Lucien fighting his instincts, his concern for Elain, his longing, his guilt over Jesminda, his sorrow and realization that Elain did not seem to want him.
A chance to see his frustration after two years, then the tentative hope as Elain begins to soften towards him, followed by the euphoria of falling in love at long last. A chance to see how Elain is influenced by the bond though she's trying to fight it.
That's angst the right way. Not two years of suffering only to have that compounded by one or both suffering the effects of a rejected bond after it all. That storyline would just be depressing and unfulfilling.
Is it a reach to say that SJM felt the bond snapping immediately was such an important storyline to explore that she gave Lucien his own POV in Feyre's trilogy? Cassian and Az got a bonus chapter, sure, but those still remain a surprise to some who don't realize they exist (I see it all the time, where people comment "What bonus chapter?!" and it usually takes someone being in the fandom to realize there is).
Lucien's POV, however, was read by everyone who read the ACOTAR series.
Every reader of the series knows how he's struggling with his mating bond instincts. Every reader of the series knows that he couldn't breathe because she was the most beautiful female he'd ever seen. And yes, every reader of the series knows he's also finding it difficult to grasp that the female he was confident did love him did not turn out to be his mate while his actual mate was in love with and engaged to someone else.
Not every reader knows that Az wanted to get down on his knees to "taste" Elain, not every reader knows how jealous he is over not having a bond, not every reader knows that SJM included mate coded language for Gwynriel. A majority? Absolutely. But not all.
The author wanted each and every single reader to know how much Lucien is struggling by giving him his own POV in the book and not only with his bond, with feeling like he's not worth anything, for the sadness over not finding the home he hoped to have in Tamlin's court, for the "utterly personal" things he's keeping to himself.
When the majority rules knowing that it's LUCIEN who is struggling the most over his bond with Elain versus Az who you'd really not know was struggling over not getting a mate unless you're a part of the fandom and aware of the bonus chapter, I feel like Lucien's HEA with Elain does take precedence over Azriel ending up with her. It's not that Az's POV doesn't matter, all bonus chapters matter, but it doesn't matter more than what was included in every single copy of ACOWAR that was ever released.
And for the arguments that I'm focusing on what Lucien wants over what Elain wants, I've said it before and I'll say it again. Elain only wants what the author decides for her, she is not independent of SJM. So if the author wants Elain and Lucien to be happy together, that's what she'll be writing. As stated above, she is the one that wrote Lucien's pov and suffering over his past and from the effects of the bond into the actual book, not Az's.

Can I request a rowan fic smut cockwarming hard dom with praise and lots after care in the end pls
Stay Still (SMUT)
Rowaelin x reader
A/n: so ik you said Rowan x reader and it is HOWEVER I feel like I can’t write one without the other lately but Aelin only makes an appearance at the end
Warnings: hard dom Rowan (kind mean), cock warming, degradation/praise kink, overstimulation, use of safe word, fluff at the end
Tumblr media
Walking past Rowan’s office the stern call of your name made you jump. You shyly walked up to his desk after being told to shut the door. Standing in front of Rowan you found it hard to look at those perfect green eyes.
Rowan tapped his pen against the desk, waiting for you to look at him. He let out a deep sigh before clearing his throat. “Do you know why I called you in here angel?” You glanced up at him, biting your lip you look back down at the carpet.
Gods damnit, you knew Aelin would tell on you! That is the last time you let her edge you without Rowan present. You let out a small defeated sigh through your nose. Through your lashes you swear you saw Rowan smirk a little, then snap his signature stern look back on.
“Yes sir.” You say softly. Rowan pushes his chair back from his desk. Looking up at him through your lashes Rowan waved you over to him. You quickly move to stand between his muscular legs, knowing that if you didn’t your punishment would be worse.
Your mate holds your hips in an almost bruising grip. He slowly looks up at you with a heated look. Those green eyes taken over by his list blown pupils. You could practically see his thoughts.
“I know you want to ask so I’m going to tell you, Aelin’s punishment will come later. Yours will be now.” You nod in understanding. “Good girl,” he purred. “Now, let’s get this off.” He begins to unlace your corset as you slide your arms from the sleeves of your dress.
An hour later you were holding back your whines from how sensitive your pussy was. You were squirming on Rowan at this point.
You started with your back to his chest once you were fully stripped. Rowan had pulled and teased your nipples until they were red. He rubbed at your clit being in you to the edge too many times to count.
After you had screamed, begging for release, Rowan had demanded silence. “Only good girls get to talk,” he had said.
Now, still fully seated on his cock, you were sitting chest to chest with Rowan. Trying not to move too much so your over sensitive body didn’t brush against the fabric of his clothes. You were willing to wait this out. Your reward in the end would be too good.
Rowan shifted under you, reaching for a blank piece of paper across his desk. You whimper at the shock that runs through your body. Your hips were killing you in this position. And your clit, which still felt raw from his fingers rubbing and edging you.
“Shh,” he says softly, bringing a hand to rub up and down your spine. You felt too tight in your skin all of a sudden. Like if you didn’t get away from Rowan you’d suffocate. Your eyes start to water. “Buzzard,” you choke out.
Rowan immediately stopped. Dropping his pen he gently holds you by your shoulders, pulling you away from him. His eyes were back to that beautiful pine green and full of concern. All traces of lust gone. “We’re going to get up, are you ok to do that?” You nod, tears still silently falling down your cheeks.
He slowly stands you up, bringing you over to the velvet couch. Pulling a spare robe out of the wardrobe in the corner. Once you’re covered he gathers your clothes and picks you up to bring you back to your chambers.
On the way back Rowan sent a message to Aelin down the bond, urging her to end her meeting early. Rowan brought you straight to the bathroom into a warm bath. You’ve calmed down now. Feeling returning to your body as Rowan used his hands to scoop water on your shoulders.
Rowan rubbed your shoulders, whispering sweet nothings in your ear. “How are you feeling?” He asks softly. “Better,” you hum.
“Let’s talk about it. What sent you over the edge, baby?” Rowan started wetting your hair, lathering the shampoo in his hands.
You let out a content sigh as Rowan’s hands rub your scalp. “It was too much edging and overstimulation. It was nice at first but feeling that much made me uncomfortable.” Rowan places a small kiss on your forehead. “I’m so sorry it was too much, baby.”
Rowan guides you to lean back, soaking the suds from your hair. “It’s ok, my love. I’m ok now.” You open your eyes, blinking up at him and giving him a small smile.
Once you’re all clean and relaxed Rowan changed you into comfy clothes, wrapping you up in his arms under the covers. As Rowan runs his fingers through your hair as your eyes get heavier until you’re lulled to sleep.

ROWAELIN MONTH: DAY 30
~ A Missing or Alternate Scene from Canon ~
Well... Let me just say I took some liberties with canon this time. I started with the Bite Scene from Heir of Fire and I went from there. This is a little 'what if', if you will. What if the mating bond snapped when Rowan bit Celaena's neck and things went from there? Italic section at the top taken from Heir of Fire and then we get to the rest.
CW: Smut
~~~~~
Faster than lightning, his hand shot out and she gagged, jolting as he grabbed her tongue between his fingers. She bit down, hard, but he didn’t let go. “Say that again,” he purred.
She choked as he kept pinching her tongue, and she went for his daggers, simultaneously slamming her knee up between his legs, but he shoved his body against hers, a wall of hard muscle and several hundred years of lethal training trapping her against a tree. She was a joke by comparison—a joke—and her tongue—
He released her tongue, and she gasped for breath. She swore at him, a filthy, foul name, and spat at his feet. And that’s when he bit her.
She cried out as those canines pierced the spot between her neck and shoulder, a primal act of aggression—the bite so strong and claiming that she was too stunned to move. He had her pinned against the tree and clamped down harder, his canines digging deep, her blood spilling onto her shirt. Pinned, like some weakling. But that was what she’d become, wasn’t it? Useless, pathetic.
She growled, more animal than sentient being. And shoved.
Rowan staggered back a step, teeth ripping her skin as she struck his chest. She didn’t feel the pain, didn’t care about the blood or the flash of light.
No, she wanted to rip his throat out—rip it out with the elongated canines she bared at him as she finished shifting and roared.
Rowan grinned. “There you are.” Blood—her blood—was on his teeth, on his mouth and chin. And those dead eyes glowed as he spat her blood onto the earth. She probably tasted like a sewer to him.
There was a shrieking in her ears, and Celaena lunged at him. Lunged, and then stopped as she took in the world with stunning clarity, smelled it and tasted it and breathed it like the finest wine. Gods, this place, this kingdom smelled divine, smelled like—
She had shifted.
She panted, even though her lungs were telling her she was no longer winded and did not need as many breaths in this body. There was a tickling at her neck—her skin slowly beginning to stitch itself together. She was a faster healer in this form. Because of the magic... Breathe. Breathe.
But there it was, rising up, wildfire crackling in her veins, in her fingertips, the forest around them so much kindling, and then—
She shoved back. Took the fear and used it like a battering ram inside herself, against the power, shoving it down, down.
Rowan prowled closer. “Let it out. Don’t fight it.”
A pulse beat against her, nipping, smelling of snow and pine. Rowan’s power, taunting hers. Not like her fire, but a gift of ice and wind. A freezing zap at her elbow had her falling back against the tree. The magic bit her cheek now. Magic—attacking her.
Don’t fight it?
His power nipped at her again and Celaena readied to hurl insults at him to make him stop. Didn’t he understand the danger he was in? Didn’t he know the monster that was raging just below the surface? The power, the inferno that had always rage inside her—that was given a true life in her fae form. This fire would consume and then destroy everything in sight. That would include the male who watched her, disappoint rife in his every feature. Her untamed wildfire might be enough to kill him.
That thought felt like a blow to her gut, enough that the inferno quieted, just for a moment. It gave her enough clarity to look at Rowan, to weather the disdain that emanated from him. And then, like a string had been pulled taut between them Celaena felt it. Something she had only heard stories of and never thought she’d have the privilege of experiencing herself.
Mate.
Rowan was her mate.
Celeana saw the moment he realised it too. For a moment his face contorted in confusion and then shock overtook everything else.
Her back was against the tree a moment later, once again his hard body had her trapped. Rowan had lost control once more, this time there was a feral glint in his eye. His dominance settled her fires, like her power was curious as to what would happen next. He inhaled, right below her ear, and his thumb dragged over where he’d bit her and Celaena braced for the pain. It never came, the touch was gentle and compared to everything else about him—the harshness of his face and the overbearing strength of his body—that caress was enough to make her moan.
Rowan’s eyes narrowed, like he was disgusted and appalled that she would make such a sound, that he would be the one to cause it. But damn him to Hellas’ realm she was intoxicated by him. The awakening of the bond had intrinsically altered something within her. Celeana didn’t understand what was going on but she knew she was not to blame. There was a need to take, a need to claim. Her body shuddered with the unrelenting force of it all. A want was building within her, a fire flowing through her veins that had nothing to do with the magic she was born with. Rowan’s scent of pine and snow surrounded her, and she could feel his magic answering the intensifying call of hers.
Celaena wanted to shift and retreat back into her human form to lessen the demands of her fae body. All that halted when a harsh snarl broke the quiet of the forest.
“Don’t you dare.”
Celaena lifted her chin in defiance of Rowan’s command. His sneer remained and she could still see her blood on his teeth, the lines of his tattoo contorting. Rowan’s tongue flicked over one of his sharp canines tasting her again. To her pure shock his eyes rolled back and he pressed into her a little more. Celeana strained against the weight of his body, trying to get enough advantage. The only thing she succeeded in doing was closing the remaining inconsiderable distance between them. She could feel every inch of him, especially the impressive and demanding hardness of his cock.
They both went still, eyes locked in a silent battle. It was like Rowan was daring her to acknowledge the very obvious reaction he was having to the sudden circumstances they found themselves in. It gave her some comfort to know it was not just her being overwhelmed by instincts. Then Celaena gave him a feline smirk.
“My, my, Rowan. All riled up after one little bite.”
“You know what we are.” Rowan’s voice was little more than a growl.
“I want to hear you say it,” Celaena said, mustering all the arrogance she could.
Rowan lent in closer. “We are mates.”
“I am your mate,” Celaena whispered in response, the words taking hold in her chest.
To hear him say it was the final affirmation and she could feel the bond between them go taut. And then something snapped and Celaena was pulling his face to her, their lips meeting.
It took a thunderous heartbeat for Rowan to react, but when it did it had embers fluttering from her. The kiss was demanding, they fought for dominance but neither could claim it. Rowan’s tongue glided into her mouth and Celaena nipped at his bottom lip with her newly reclaimed canines. The kiss was feral and ruthless. She hated him, he hated her. This was not born out of love and kindness, just a frenzied need that came deep from within them both. That did nothing to quell the want that was surging through her veins. Stuck between his hard body and the tree Celaena could feel everything. The length of him pressed into her core, flooding her body with heat.
Even through all the layers of clothing we could feel how large he was. The thought of him being inside her made her whimper, Rowan swallowing the sound as his tongue flicked at the roof of her mouth.
“More,” Celaena demanded. “Give me more.”
“This means nothing,” Rowan replied, but she could read what was unsaid.
You mean nothing.
“I don’t care,” Celaena hissed as her fingers searched for bare skin at the collar of his tunic. She needed to feel more of him.
Rowan drew back, his eyes conveying every bitter sentiment that had been accumulating since the moment they met. “Neither do I.”
His body was gone and for a devastating moment Celana thought he was denying her. But he had only backed off to allow him the space to remove his clothes, shedding his outer layers and then the weapons that were hidden beneath. He was far more efficient than she was, Celaena was only at her undershirt and working on the laces of her pants when Rowan hauled her back to him. He didn’t kiss her, he just had one arm wrapped around her waist pressing her into his bare chest, the hand of the other dragged over her body.
Her magic sparked at his touch, she could feel the flames on her fingers. Ice cold wind danced between the fire on her hands, beckoning to her magic in a way she had never felt before. It was playful, a tendency she would never have expected from the stoic male in front of her.
“This means nothing,” Rowan said again.
Celaena rolled her eyes. “You mentioned that.”
He bared his teeth and lent in closer, and the strength of the eager hope Celaena had that he would kiss her again was embarrassing.
Rowan’s eyes ran over her, and when he met her gaze they had only darkened. “This is the mating frenzy, nothing more. We’ll both be useless if we don’t give into it.”
His hand was on her ribs and Celeana arched to encourage him to take more. “Whatever you say.”
Rowan took the invitation and his hand covered her breast, growling as Celaena moaned. Then he had her legs out from under her and was laying her body on the grass. It was then Celaena noticed he still had his pants on—the urgency to be near overwhelming enough that he forgot his initial task. Rowan’s silver hair fell around them as he braced himself over her, the rest of the world fading away to nothing. There was only the male in front of her, the touch of his hands and the lingering taste of him on her tongue. And Celaena wanted more.
She kissed him again, the unsaid demand for him to get on with it expressed in the way she sucked his tongue into her mouth. A sound of pleasure rumbled from deep within Rowan’s chest, igniting her fires further. The grass crackled as it dried, the scent of smoke filling her nose. Celaena’s magic sensed Rowan’s stirring and she felt, rather than saw, as he sealed them under a hard wall of air. Lines of flame ran along it, inspecting for weaknesses, but found none. Nothing would get past the defences of the Prince. He had made sure that her cataclysmic power would not ruin the forest around them.
Before Celaena could drown in the thoughts of her own volatile nature, she was distracted by Rowan’s hand at the waistband of her pants and the way he tore through the remaining laces. Then his fingers were on her skin, slipping beneath her clothes and to her entrance. Her hips bucked at the touch and Rowan groaned as he felt the evidence of her desire.
Rowan did it again, this time dragging his fingers over the bundle of nerves at the apex of her thighs. That touch undid her, the restraint on her powers failing and she burst into flames—her clothing turning to nothing more than ash.
There was a gut wrenching moment of fear when she thought her flames would hurt Rowan. She may hate him, but he did not deserve the wrath of her flames. Celaena opened her eyes, terrified of what she might find. Rowan was braced above her, something akin to wonder in his eyes, the harsh angles of his face lit by her firelight.
“Beautiful,” he whispered.
That word kindled something in her dead heart, calling to the echoes of her pride. Stretching her arms up Celaena arched her back, the invitation clear. Ice cold lips lowered to her breast, taking the peak of it deep within his mouth. Rowan worshipped her, nipping and sucking until she was a writhing, flaming mess under his ministrations. Her core pulsed with need and she threw a leg over his hip, pulling their bodies closer.
Rowan’s body surrendered, and they moved together until it wasn’t. He was gone and the loss of him was an unwanted shock. Pushing herself to her elbows Celaena saw that he was ridding himself of pants.
“Oh, Gods,” she whispered when Rowan was utterly bare.
This male was a warrior and every inch of him upheld that fact. From his broad shoulders, to the defined muscles of his stomach, and his strong thighs. It was the straining hardness of his cock that held her attention, it flooded her body with molten want. She needed him inside her, now.
They moved in sync, Celaena lying back and Rowan braced himself over her again. Their eyes locked, words were beyond both of them as he lowered his hips, the head of him grazing over her entrance. The primal need for him reached its breaking point, and Celana was willing to risk the humiliation of begging for him. She was truly Mala blessed because there was no need to, in one powerful stroke Rowan sheathed himself inside her.
Celaena might have screamed in pleasure and that first decadent feeling of him inside, she couldn’t be sure because all other sense was lost to her. There was only her and Rowan, and this powerful sealing between them. Nothing would be the same after this world altering moment.
Her nails dragging down Rowan’s back was the indication he needed to start moving. Celaena expected him to be rough, to drive into her with a sharp ruthlessness. He did not, each stroke was thorough enough to have her trembling. Precise in a way that Celaena knew that he wielded skills beyond blades. Rowan was being gentle, the underlying tenderness breathtaking in the worst possible way. Celeana didn’t want this from him, it felt close too close to pity for her liking. This male never had a kindness of any nature to give to her. There was no reason for him to start now.
Celaena was about to take matters in her own hands when Rowan’s breath brushed against the skin of her neck, his lips the lightest of touches. Then he moved down, right over where he had bit her. The wound was long healed, but his tongue darted out over where his teeth had pierced her skin. Unbidden, her inner walls tightened around him, making Rowan shudder, his rhythm faltering. All Celaena’s focus went to the ministrations of his mouth. His teeth grazed, just shy of hurting and she moaned. He did that a few times, anticipation and desire building. And then he bit her.
The act so primal and claiming that release barreled through her, unexpected and enough to leave her reeling. Rowan drew out her pleasure, his hips undulating and steady. Celaena’s magic unleashed, flames and embers thriving as Rowan’s winds encouraged them. This miles beyond anything that she had felt with Chaol. Was pure, unadulterated pleasure, and Celeana knew nothing would compare. For the rest of her miserable life nothing and no one would compare to this.
Rowan was still moving, unchanged from his infuriating accuracy. Her body begged for more—for the true claiming. When her orgasm passed and she regained strength to her limbs Celeana planted a foot on the forest flaw and flipped them. Her eyes fluttered closed at the feeling of him so deep inside her.
When she opened her eyes she saw mild surprise on Rowan’s face at the change of position. But not displeased, not at all. Celaena rolled her hips, hard and fast, and that had Rowan’s hands clamping on her waist. She did it again, the heart of her flames turning blue as she sighed at the feeling of being so full. So quickly, she could feel herself cresting towards release again. Beneath her Rowan’s eyes were closed, his hips flexing in time with the motion of hers. His teeth caught his bottom lip, there was a deep, rumbling moan coming from him. The truth of how much he was enjoying this was evident from the look of sheer pleasure on his face.
Celaena gave a dark laugh. “Try not to enjoy yourself too much.”
“Shut your mouth,” Rowan said, his eyes still closed.
The petulance in Rowan’s tone made her laugh again, only to be cut short but a hard thrust. Celaena tipped her head back at the sensation, her nails digging into his chest. He groaned, his movements gaining some urgency. Now she was not only chasing her pleasure, but his as well. Celaena wanted to see this conceited male come undone, all by her doing.
Another intense thrust had her falling forward, hands landing either side of Rowan’s head to stop her from falling on him completely. This angle let her grind on him in a new delicious angle and she knew now they wouldn’t last much longer.
Before Celaena could stop him, Rowan’s hands ran over her back, her breath catching as he felt the ridges and divots on her skin. He let out a vicious snarl enough to rattle her bones. Then so conflicting to that feral viciousness, a hand cradled the back of her neck and brought her down for a brutal kiss. This time Rowan nipped at her lip, his sharp teeth were just shy of piercing her skin.
He was close, she could feel it.
“Aelin,” Rowan all but breathed, like a whisper on an ice coated wind.
To hear her true name pulled as the longing of her restless soul. He had been the first to call her by her true name in many years. It was a summoning, a beckoning to life where she no longer had to hide. For the first time in a long time Celeana felt the glimmer of home. Her lips kissed where his shoulder and neck met, tracing lines with her tongue. She would feel Rowan’s ragged breathing, each breath shorter as he approached his release. When Celaena felt her own there for the taking, she bit down, her sharp teeth breaking skin and blood filled her mouth. He tasted wind-kissed and powerful, an answer to a question Celaena hadn’t known she was asking. Rowan roared as he came, ice and wind blasting and twining with fire. Celaena’s own release followed, the joining of their magic heightening the intensity. There was a staggering thrill in being truly unleashed—not having to temper what she was. And then to have someone who met her blow for blow… it was earth shattering.
Rowan was the first to recover, sitting up regardless of the way Celaena was still slumped on his chest. He didn’t make any attempt to move her, just waited until she was ready. Celaena didn’t want to, because once she did the reality of what they were and what they’d done would be inescapable. In the end it was the closeness of Rowan’s body that drove her to slip off his lap. The fact they were mates didn’t change a thing emotionally between them. His closeness brought her no comfort, not when they hated each other.
The loss of him inside her was nearly devastating. Celaena braced herself for pain and let the shift take over her. It was easier to contend with everything in her human body. Her senses were dulled and the call to Rowan was weaker. Free of the weight of her body Rowan was getting dressed, his back to her. That was when Celaena realised she had nothing to wear. She had burnt her clothes, she didn’t even have her flames to cloak herself in. Celaena pulled her knees up to her chest, suddenly so cold.
There was a muffled thump, and she startled at the pile of grey cloth that had landed beside her.
“That won’t be happening again,” muttered gruffly, shrugging on his jacket. Celaena could see the weapons he’d donned underneath. His chest was bare and the fastenings of his pants were ruined. Rowan dangerously uncovered and she could stop the way her eyes roved over him.
Already Celaena’s blood was heating, even in her human form it was begging for more. What she knew of mating bonds was limited, but even then she was familiar with what was often referred to as the frenzy that took place between mates. She was gaining a deeper understanding of it with each second longer she spent in Rowan’s presence.
Rowan sniffed, his body going preternaturally still. Celaena ignored him, standing and putting on the tunic he had so graciously offered.
“Understood.”
Out of her peripherals she was a flash of light, telling her Rowan had shifted and fled, leaving her to walk back to Mistward on her own. The solitude would give her time to think.  Being mates won’t change her plans. Celaena had made a promise to Nehemia and she would not let her unwilling attachment to the bastard of a male set to train her stop her. This changed nothing, she would complete her task the same way she had been doing everything for many years now, the way she was destined to be. Alone.
So, in my head there may or may not be a whole It Takes Two-esque canon au that spawned and it starts right here haha...
Hmm... number 7 for Rowan and Aelin? :>
7…to shut them up for Rowaelin
"You know who I am!" Aelin places her hands on her hips, glowering up at her mate.
"I know who you are," he answers with a smirk.
"Then don't tell me what to do."
"I didn't tell you what to do, Fireheart."
"Don't call me that. Not right now. Not when I am angry at you." She furrows her brow even more, trying to glare at him, but his smirk only grows. "And you did tell me what to do. You said it would be too dangerous for me to go there."
"Semantics, Fireheart. I only said that it would be dangerous, not too–"
"I know what you said, don't deny it now. You said–"
Rowan cradles her chin in one broad hands and slams his lips against hers, shutting her up. He smiles in triumph when he hears Aelin gasp and uses the moment to slide his tongue into her mouth, kissing her deeply, and with so much hunger it makes a blush creep into her cheeks.
I'm not even a Gwynriel but how can you read the line "You're the new ribbon, Az" and not immediately realize something is brewing? I wasn't here for the TOG ship wars. I read the series and in Heir of Fire I was almost certain Rowaelin was endgame. I was salty about it, but I knew it would be endgame because I'd already recognized how SJM writes her stories by that point. Imagine my surprise when I found out there had been an insane debate about it before Rowaelin became endgame. I'm not even salty about it anymore; imo Yrene is a way better fit for Chaol and honestly the cadre is 🧎‍♀️🧎‍♀️🧎‍♀️🧎‍♀️🧎‍♀️(especially their former commander 🥵). Imo, the Aelin/Chaol/Rowan dynamic is similar to the Elain/Azriel/Lucien dynamic. Every Ewriel "moment" has been nullified by something else happening in the text. But by the end of ACOSF, several things are still true: 1. Rhysand stopped Azriel from kissing Elain. Azriel then rejected her and Elain returned the necklace. Azriel went to the library with the intention that Gwyn receive it, even if he didn't hand it to her directly. 2. Lucien and Elain are still mates. You can argue all you want that it's a spell, but SJM uses the same mating language to describe their bond as she does with any true mating pair. Besides, do you really think SJM is going to make Lucien spend decades convinced his first love was his mate only to hand him a fake mate? Pls be fr. The only fake mating bond SJM created was with Rowan and Lyria because of the dark powers of Maeve, but Lyria was Rowan's FIRST love, fake mating bond or no. Lyria is somewhat like the Jesminda in this situation, not Elain. 3. Azriel ended the bonus chapter thinking of Gwyn. No he didn't express sexual thoughts yet, I'd be disturbed if he had. But he was at ease with her in a way he wasn't with anyone else, his shadows danced with her as opposed to the skittering it does with Elain and Mor. Secret, lovely beauty. 4. Elain is bothered by the cruelty of the Hewn City. She also was "ridiculous" in black, which is CLEAR foreshadowing. The Spring Court was described as being "made for someone like her." You're always talking about foreshadowing and shit but then ignore the foreshadowing that Elain will be leaving the Night Court. 5. Feyre WANTED Elain to get to know Lucien. She may have doubted the Cauldron's decision initially, but the fact that she was supporting Lucien and encouraging Elain to interact with him shows that at the very least she's CONSIDERING the possibility that the Cauldron IS right. To be honest, I don't give a shit who Azriel ends up with. I'm here for Lucien's story. But I read that bonus chapter and I instantly knew Gwynriel was endgame. Gwyn is not going to be used as an obstacle between Azriel and Elain; she's part of Nesta's chosen family and has been through enough, she deserves better than being the girl in the middle. And SJM doesn't even write love triangles, which is honestly a relief, because love triangles are so cringey. I don't think Elain and Azriel are going to get "closure," because honestly they barely had a relationship to begin with. They didn't even kiss.
old faces, part 9
Rowaelin x f!Reader
Tumblr media
Word Count: ~5.8k
A/N: sorry this one took so long!
series masterlist
Rowan looked for Aelin on instinct, wondering if she’d seen the same thing. On the other side of the ballroom, there was no inclination that she saw a thing. Should he tell her? Maybe.
A thousand emotions flooded through him; jealousy, hurt, betrayal, confusion, all surpassed by the desire to storm out of there and drag you far, far away from her. At least he had enough self-control to reign himself in. You were well within your rights to … be with whoever you wanted, but that didn’t mean he had to like it.
Aelin met his eyes. What is it?
A brief shake of his head, and she frowned - her expression telling him they’d be talking about it later, but dropped it. There’s a time and a place, and now certainly isn’t it.
Still, he couldn’t stop his own mind from wandering. Where the hell do they go from here?
He knows better than to think you were doing this to get their attention, but part of him wished you were. At least he’d know then that you wanted them. If anything, you were doing it to put some space between the three of you.
Was he going to fight for you this time? Did you want him to? Rowan was a tad ashamed he didn’t know the answer.
-
You ran a finger over your lips. They were bruised but not from who you really wanted.
You did this. Took the small blossom of hope, and crushed it. The small spark of happiness terrified you enough you had to destroy it. You didn’t belong to them, and you knew that, but any chances of it repeating itself were gone. It would’ve ended in flames anyway. This was you protecting yourself.
The more you played with the thought in your mind, letting it repeat itself until the words sounded strange, the less you believed it.
Maybe everyone would hate you, and maybe you’d deserve it. Space. You needed to put distance between yourself and the others. It was for the better, of course. Maybe Rowan and Aelin would never speak to you again beyond what was necessary. Sure, it would hurt, but less than having your heart ripped out.
Coward.
Pressing your forehead against the stone, steadying your breathing, you tried to get the word out of your mind, tried to clear your head of any thoughts. It didn’t work.
Running your hands over the gauzy fabric of your dress, you straightened it enough to look presentable. Rolling your shoulders, twisting your neck until you felt a rather satisfying pop, you put one foot in front of the other, the only goal making it to your rooms. At least Ceri was spending the night with Evangeline.
Hopefully nobody would comment on your early exit. You didn’t care. Right now, you needed to get the hell away from there, drink some water, and sleep this off. What are the odds you could avoid this for the next week? Part of you tried to convince yourself you were making a big deal out of something inconsequential, and that they might not have noticed. Sleep came easier than it should’ve, but you took the small win where you could.
A small buzzing sound woke you, and you darted upright in bed, eyes alert and scanning. You relaxed at the hauntingly familiar magic, before memories of the previous night woke you and you tensed again, every muscle locking and on alert.
It’s too damn early for this.
Glancing at the window, the sun had just begun to peak over the horizon.
Swinging your legs over, feet hitting the soft carpet, you snatched a robe and wrapped it around yourself. Despite springtime, an early chill still set in. The sounds of fire crackling hit you, the small wave of magic comforting of all things. Breathing in through your nose, out through your mouth, you strided for the door, hoping your posture portrayed some semblance of confidence.
“You’re up awfully early,” you commented. Aelin groaned, sprawled out over your couch, arm covering her eyes as if the faint light pained her.  Rowan leaned against the wall next to the fireplace. He was tense, she was relaxed. One of them knew.
Tea. Tea first.
Wordlessly, you blew past them towards the small stove and kettle, busying your hands. Three mugs.
Minutes later, you handed one to Aelin, an appreciative smile crossing her face, before her nostrils flared.
“I thought I saw you dancing with a witch,” she huffed. There was nothing … accusatory in her voice. You forced a smile onto your face.
“Your eyes are still working.”
“More than dance.”
You might kill Rowan later. Aelin’s head tilted, gaze darting from you to Rowan, but you took a few steps away, hands clenching the mug, chin tilting up, focusing on the male, eyes glittering with defiance.
A shrug of your shoulders, and you took your place at your favorite armchair.
The flash of anger in Rowan’s eyes amused you. He came here for a fight, but he wouldn’t get one out of you. Had he spied on you last night? Followed you out to the garden?
Despite the drunken turmoil raging in your mind last night, your head had cleared and you knew a few things; you’d done nothing wrong, and you didn’t answer to them.
Aelin straightened, “what do you mean more?”
She looked at you for an answer. On one side, you could let them make their own assumptions, or you could tell them what happened in plain words. You didn’t get the chance.
In a blink, Rowan was in front of you, his hands gripping your forearms, mug clattering to the floor. One hand twined in the back of your hair, tugging your lips to his. His kiss is brutal - claiming, consuming, and territorial. The last thought sealed it for you.
You don’t belong to anyone,’ Fenrys’s words popped into your mind, and you ignored the irony of thinking about him when Rowan’s lips are on your own. Shoving his chest, you managed to push yourself a few steps back, he didn’t budge one inch.
“What is your problem?” Your breathing was heavy, lips already bruised.
“You’re my problem.”
“Oh,” you rolled your eyes, ignoring the faint buzzing in your ears, “that’s what every female wants to hear.”
His hand gripped your arm again, “what do you want to hear?” A brief pause, and his mouth opened as if he was going to say something else, but the door flung open.
“Thought I might find you in here,” Lysandra chirps and strolls into the room - either oblivious to the situation, or purposefully ignoring it. Rowan took a step back, eyes still narrowed on you. “The girls are still asleep,” Lysandra continued, striding for the couch Aelin was currently occupying, shoving her friends' legs aside and ignoring the snarl that might’ve sent a rational person running. “Did I miss something?” False innocence laced her voice.
When Rowan and Aelin slipped into one of their silent conversations, she shot a wink your way. Because she knew what happened? Or because she’d caught you in a rather … compromising position?
A hiss. You blinked. Halle was winding between your legs - hissing at Rowan. The male broke eye contact with Aelin, glancing at the cat with a stony expression. Hackles still risen, she didn’t back down.
This was too much. Not now, you couldn’t do this now. Standing abruptly, you threw some excuse out before retreating to your bedroom, ignoring the eyes digging into your back. Fur brushed against your calf, and you thanked the Gods for bringing this little creature into your life. It was a strange connection, but you knew she had your back.
-
“What the hell happened?” Lysandra asked.
Aelin stopped glaring at Rowan long enough to look at her best friend. The shifter raised one brow, and she looked back to her mate.
“What do we tell her?”
“It’s none of her business.” It really isn’t, but she needs someone who’s not him to talk about this with. “Tell her what you want,” Rowan’s eyes conveyed an air of exasperation.
“It’s weird when you do that,” Lysandra commented.
“And you sound like my cousin,” Aelin snapped back, finally breaking her connection with Rowan.
“Is that supposed to be an insult?”
Aelin huffed and stood, linking her arm through Lysandra’s and dragging the woman with her. Looking over her shoulder, Rowan was staring at your bedroom door.
“Rowan, I’m sure you’re needed somewhere,” she called. Maybe he was, maybe he wasn’t, but this is the last place he needs to be right now. The three of you need time, and Aelin needs to wake up enough to figure out what the hell happened between last night and the last few minutes. Barely audible footsteps sounded behind them, Rowan slipping out the door right after.
As it shut, magic slammed and barricaded behind her. Dropping Lysandra’s arm, she pivoted to gaze at the door. Locked out. There’s no way she’d get in without your explicit permission - that or one of them tearing down the shields, and gods know how long that could take. Her throat bobbed, and Rowan was glaring at the nearly imperceptible shimmer.
Lysandra’s warm hand closed around her own, “we need to talk,” and led her back to her rooms. From the corner of her eye, she saw Rowan head towards a window.
The conversation with Lysandra left her … reeling. In honesty, Aelin didn’t know what to think of the situation. Blindsided, yes, but was it really a betrayal If you weren’t with them? You were well in your rights to fuck whoever you wanted, but she still felt a bit hurt, maybe like she wasn’t enough.
Aelin hadn’t dealt with this kind of insecurity ever, or at least since she can remember.
Combined with Rowan’s little show, and your reaction, this was a mess, and that’s what she was trying to avoid. She didn’t like to admit it, but Rowan knew you better, he’d have an idea of what the hell that was about - if it was anything - once he had time to calm down. Then again … you hadn’t exactly reacted well to him. She ran a hand through her hair, tugging at the golden strands. This was not how she thought her morning would go.
The timing was inconvenient. Glancing at the clock, it was nearly noon. Tomorrow morning, negotiations and meetings would start, and there certainly wouldn’t be any time to discuss this or figure out where they stood with you throughout the week.
Rowan’s magic hit her a second before the door swung open. She didn’t need to look at him to know he was still pissed. Sure enough, pine green eyes were filled with ire. Sitting next to her, he braced his forearms on his thighs, gaze fixed on the wall ahead of them.
“Are we going to talk about it?” She studied his profile. Clenched jaw, narrowed eyes, chest rising and falling at a too perfect rhythm.
“She’s a coward.”
That, she didn’t expect.
“Explain,” Aelin prompted. He looked at her, as if to eyes saying ‘isn’t it obvious?’, she ignored and waited for him to speak.
“She’s scared.”
The clipped answers weren’t going to cut it this time. “Actually explain it,” she didn’t bother keeping the annoyance out of her voice.
“She’s scared of getting close again. Too damn independent and stubborn to admit she actually wants us.”
“I want it,” you admitted to Fenrys, “but it’s not going to end well. I can’t put myself through that.”
“You haven’t actually tried,” he was trying to keep the exasperation out of his voice, and you appreciated the effort - even if it fell flat.
As if he knew you were brooding, he’d shown up and banged on your bedroom door until you came out.
Pausing for a moment, you replayed the events of the previous night in your head.
‘Remember to have fun. Remember you don’t belong to anyone,’ Fenrys looped his arm through yours.
“I should blame this on you,” you jabbed an elbow into his side. His shoulders rose and fell. “You’re the one who’s trying to stir something up.”
A half smirk on his face, but you knew he wouldn’t actually admit it - not yet. Out of character for the asshole, he was waiting for you to keep speaking.
“Is it immature if I avoid them until the week is over?” You finally asked.
“Maybe,” a trace of amusement found its way into his voice.
“He told me I'm his problem,” you huffed. A problem is the last thing you wanted to be.
“It’s not the way you think,” Fenrys snorted. This morning, all Rowan did was make it obvious he either wants you or thinks he has some kind of claim over you. Aelin … you weren’t really certain where she stood, or if she actually knew what happened last night. You assumed she does by now. Assumed that Rowan’s relayed the events in the worst possible way. It had been a few hours, you took the time to try and compose yourself, to calm your racing mind - it didn’t work well, and Fenrys showed up to get the full scoop from last night. To your surprise, he hadn’t known anything, but you were in the mood to talk so you’d relayed the whole story.
He, Evangeline, and Ceri were currently the only people your wards allowed through without your approval.
“Aren’t you going to ask me to explain?” He followed up.
“No. You’ll do it anyway.”
A small buzzing sound told you someone was nearby. Jasmine and lemon verbena hit a moment later. Alone. Just Aelin.
There wasn’t any point in trying to keep her out, and you bent the magic enough to let her through. There was no hesitation as the door swung open and she strode through. Like she would’ve on any other day. Like you hadn’t just shut them out for the first time in months. Not that you were searching for one, definitely not.
One pointed look from her, and Fenrys left, sending a wince your way. That should’ve been enough of a warning sign. She settled on a chair across from you, looking every bit a Queen. Halle jumped up from your lap, crouching in front of your feet instead, tail swishing back and forth, hitting your ankles with each pass. Effectively, she’d put herself between the two of you. A barrier. It unnerved you, that your cat thought they might be some kind of threat. Aelin glanced at her, holding the cat’s gaze for a moment, before her eyes returned to you.
“Is this a joke to you?”
“Excuse me,” you straightened, spine stiffening.
“The way we feel about you. We’ve made it obvious. Tell me now if it is, I don’t like being made a fool.” There was a coldness in her, a sharpness in her tone you hadn’t heard directed at you.
The easy thing to do would be to cow, to bend, to appease, but you were sick of doing that.
“I don’t belong to anyone,” you kept a quiet confidence in your voice, somehow meeting her eyes.
“Is this some kind of test?” You’d always been good at reading people, and those years of observation came through. Aelin was hurt, yes, but there was a tinge of insecurity.
“No.”
“Then what is it?”
Honesty, honesty, honesty, you chanted in your mind.
“This won’t end well,” you swallowed, “and I can’t put myself through that.”
A harsh laugh. “You haven’t even tried. We haven’t tried,” Aelin ran a hand over her hair, smoothing it. “Maybe Rowan’s right about you being a coward.”
This time, you laughed - the sound harsh to your ears. Not a laugh of joy - of disbelief. She’d been paying attention to Rowan, then. Figuring out exactly what words would get a reaction out of you, would light a fire under your ass. Halle hadn’t reacted, and maybe it made you insane but you knew you were still safe somehow - that even your cat was still weighing the situation.
“I prefer to call it self-preservation,” you said coolly, even as anger rose in you. Her eyes flashed, mouth turning up at one corner, gone before you could fully register it. She knew what was brewing in you, even as you tried to hide it.
“Why are you fighting it?”
Aelin was good. Her questions and words threw you off, darting in different directions and testing different angels. A dormant part of you stirred, thrilled at the challenge.
“It’s not that easy.”
“We want you, you want us,” she countered. “That’s pretty simple to me.”
You shook your head.
“Is it what others think?” Aelin prompted, her expression told you she’d have choice words or flames for anyone who tried to judge.
“It’s not,” you admitted. She watched expectantly, waiting for you to explain.
In that moment, you realized something crucial. Aelin was fighting for you.
Embarrassingly, you burst into fucking tears.
-
Just as Aelin thought you might finally explain what the hell was going through your mind, just as she saw the cracks form, you started crying and they crumbled.
Without thinking, she instantly rose, making her way across the room, one eye on your cat. When she wasn’t attacked, she pressed herself against your side, arms wrapping around your shoulders and tugging you into her. Halle padded off, and maybe she needed more caffeine, because she could’ve sworn the cat disappeared into the shadows.
Was it something she said? The ‘coward’ comment was a bit harsh, and not entirely true, but she didn’t think that was it. These didn’t seem like tears of rage or sadness. Not knowing set her on edge, and all she wanted was to start pestering you for answers, but a semblance of awareness kept her mouth shut, and kept her arms around you. Right now, even with the mess, you were leaning into her, trusting her, letting yourself get whatever release this was, and she’d take it.
One arm around your shoulders, your head buried into her side, fingers running through your hair, she waited until the tears subsided, and then a while longer before speaking.
“What was that about?”
You hesitated, and she watched you weigh your answer.. She’d know if you were lying, and mentally begged for you to tell her the truth.
“I could be wrong,” you kept your voice barely above a whisper, “but it seems like you’re fighting for me.”
Her hand stilled, before she moved enough to see your face. Tears still staining your face, eyes wide, cheeks flushed, she’d never seen you look this vulnerable. “Of course I am.”
In that moment, Aelin realized something crucial. Rowan hadn’t fought for you, and whether you knew it or not it was still stuck in your subconscious, still keeping you from diving into this. This wasn’t simple, not at all, but she doubted she could get the two of you to come to a consensus by the end of the day. A truce. There needed to be some kind of middle ground, or mutual understanding - something to keep everything at bay for now.
“It’s not simple,” Aelin said, feeling more than hearing you stifle laughter. Ignoring the satisfaction currently rolling off you in waves, she continued  “We want you, you want us,” you stiffened, but didn’t pull away. “There’s not enough time to figure this out today.” She ran her thumb back and forth over your shoulder, the fabric thin enough she felt the heat of your skin.
“There’s not,” you replied, slowly.
“What if we leave it at that, and promise to talk about it after the week is over?”
You were quiet, long enough she began to doubt herself. Gods, you might be the only person who could drag out this kind of uncertainty in her and she might start cursing you for it.
“Alright … just keep the territorial fae bullshit at bay.”
A genuine laugh came right from her chest. That second portion was definitely intended to reach Rowan’s ears, and she’d take great pleasure in relaying the message word for word. Messenger. Not a role she’d take on permanently, but she’d do it for now to keep the peace. Based on this morning’s interaction, Aelin got the sense it was better for you and Rowan to wait until after the week’s over to talk any of this through.
-
Arrangements had already been made for Ceri to stay in the castle throughout the week. You’d refused, and were grateful for it. Space was good, even if you’d come to some kind of understanding with Aelin. After the week, you wouldn’t just roll over on your belly for them. Nothing would bloom overnight, you’d take the time and test if it might actually work, and trust your gut. The three of you were immortal, time was plentiful
Rowan’s reaction - even if it was hot, even if you’d replayed the moment in your mind a few times, still pissed you off. The two of you needed time to cool your heads, to breathe, and Aelin had picked up on that. Ideally, it would’ve been just two or three days, but circumstances prevented that. Hopefully, your advisor role would keep you busy enough throughout the week to keep your mind off of them, or at least to provide a bit of distraction. Gods know you need that right now for your sanity..
You’d already told Ceri you’d see her tomorrow, and she’d gone off with Aelin and Rowan for ‘royal duties.’ You didn’t envy her.
Hands braced on your balcony, you saw the city bustling with excitement. After mid-day, several members of the foreign delegations took to the streets, and markets were in full bloom to sell their wares. You wondered if any of your items would make it into foreign hands. Shaking the thought, you debated whether or not you’d actually make the walk through the city.
The last thing you wanted right now was to run into anyone you might know from your past, and although you hadn’t spotted anyone last night, you’d been regretfully distracted.
Taking a few back passages, you made your way to a shadowed corner on the first floor before shifting. This was a risk on its own, especially if you ran into anyone from the southern continent, but, you’d move quicker this way.
Stretching, you tested out the form. It had been a while since you’d shifted. Maybe a week or two. Feline senses were sharper, emotions were clear and simple, and you embraced it.
Blending into the shadows, not a soul recognized you as you made your way through the city. Thanks to the strange magic, the normal half hour walk - likely closer to three quarters an hour with the crowd, took about ten minutes. You spent the rest of the day touching up on notes, rearranging your books, and mentally running through questions you might be asked, before falling into an uneasy sleep.
Day one, you were summoned twice.
Day two, the Court predicted you’d be called in several times - so you’d shown up at the castle to wait around. Better than making the walk back and forth. Sure enough, you were called into several that day, speaking to so many people your mind was frazzled by the end, and after a glass of wine you fell into an easy sleep.
Day three, you only came around midday to check in on Ceri, but an old face caught up with you.
“Y/n,” a gentle but firm voice called as you attempted to retreat down the hall. It was … familiar.
Pasting an ease-going smile on your face, you turned back to see Yrene Towers - now Yrene Westfall.
“Hello,” you called - the smile turning genuine. You wondered if she remembered you, and part of you hoped she didn’t. She’d delivered your child after all, and that had been traumatic enough to keep you from ever getting pregnant again. Fae births were notoriously difficult, and you were no exception.
Her husband was a few feet behind, eyeing you warily, as she closed the distance.
“You’re doing well,” she paused a few feet ahead. She did remember.
“Much thanks to you,” you admitted.
“I was quite junior back then,” her mouth turned up at the corner, and she cleared her throat. “I met your … cat, the other day.”
It was a lot of effort to keep yourself still, to keep your reactions schooled pleasant. “Halle.”
She smiled. “How did she end up here?”
Of course she’d know Halle was part baast-cat, and be curious about it. They rarely ever left the Torre library, as far as you knew, or mixed with other cats.
“She showed up one day.” The truth sounded quite ridiculous coming from your lips. Her brows rose. “It surprised me.”
She nodded, more to herself. At least she believed you.
“How do you find Terrasen?”
“I love it here, even with the weather.”
A laugh left her, and you found yourself smiling. You’d seen the healer several times when she still lived in Antica, and she was always kind. If you guessed correctly, you’d arrived around the same time.
“Years later, even Adarlan feels freezing.”
“Compared to Antica, everywhere is.”
You fell into easy conversation, reminiscence. It didn’t draw any homesickness for you. Maybe a desire to visit again, but not to move back there. Should it have? That was a question to ponder later. The longer the conversation went on, the more discomfort settled in you. The questions and direction turned more personal. Not too invasive, or rude by social standards, but you’d always been a particularly private person for a reason.
Footsteps, quiet your company didn’t notice, and your eyes flicked behind her, finding Aedion striding up the corridor, and he met your eyes, a brief nod.
“Y/n,” he called as he got closer. “You’re wanted.”
Teeth tugged at your bottom lip, fighting back a snarky remark. “It was good to see you,” you told her, nodding towards Chaol, and stepped around them, Aedion falling into step beside you.
“Wanted by who?” You waited until you were out of human hearing range.
“By many, I'm sure.” He grinned at your glare. “You just looked like you needed a rescue.”
Chuckling, you ran your hand down your face, relieved there wasn’t actually anyone requesting you, and grateful he’d shown up. “Thank you.”
“Everything alright?”
“Just a lot of questions,” you muttered.
Aedion snorted, “I thought you’d be used to that by now,” and ignored the jab of your elbow. Yes, you’d been grilled during every meeting, but that was different. Actually, you’d enjoyed it - sharing your knowledge. Personal questions were different.
Voices came, speaking Halha, nearly rounding the corner - several paces down but they’d see you in moments. Gods, that’s the last thing you need.
Aedion grabbed the crook of your elbow, shoving the two of you through a door you hadn’t seen, right into a servants passage. A hand over your mouth muffled your own squeak of surprise. He jerked his head, and you followed him - cobwebs in some of the corners. Apparently this one hadn’t been used in quite some time.
“I know this castle well,” he said, taking a left. “Not many use this passage anymore. Or know it exists.”  Based on the thick layer of dust, it had probably been a few years since anyone walked through here. “I trust you to keep the secret,” a half-smile sent your way, over his shoulder.
It didn’t come out quite like a threat, maybe more of a warning. Not many know of it, and he’d like to keep it that way.
“I’ll keep it to myself,” you promised, but knew you’d be back to explore through them another time. Nothing about the promise said you couldn’t go back.
“I’m ready for this week to be over,” Aedion admitted, holding the door open for you, exiting close to one of the private gardens, right near the back of the castle.
“So am I,” you added absentmindedly. Not really, you really weren’t. The end of this week meant you’d be facing a different type of meeting - one you were still wholly unprepared for, despite writing lists of the things you want to say. The hardest part would be sticking to your boundaries, but with the help of your lists and maybe some liquid courage you could do it.
The week was nearly over before you knew it, the second to last day arrived and everything went too smoothly, and you felt like you were constantly waiting for the other shoe to drop.
-
“May I speak with you?” A male with soft brown eyes, tanned skin, and light hair asked politely.
“Of course,” you tried not to grimace, the morning hadn’t gotten off to a great start. This was your job, after all, to answer any kind of questions that might pop up. He tilted his head to the side, motioning towards a more secluded area - a garden. Against better judgment, you followed. Once you were partially obscured from view, he stopped. Too hidden. The hair on the back of your neck rose.
He shifted from one foot to the other, glancing up at the sky. Annoyed, you pursed your lips - ready to ask what the fuck he wanted (you’d spilt your tea this morning and not had time to make another cup), but his mouth opened.
“You are quite difficult to find,” his smile wasn’t genuine, nor was the statement entirely true.
“I’m always here,” you countered, not bothering to hide the snappish tone You’ve been ‘on-call’ this entire week.
“Well, to find alone,” he corrected, both hands up in a placating gesture, “not in a creepy way, I promise.”
Bullshit. You’d bet gold he hoped that was a reassuring or disarming smile. His nostrils flared when you didn’t reply to him, didn’t assure him you found it perfectly normal - you didn’t, and placating a male wasn’t on your to-do list for the day.
“There’s an artifact we’re looking to track down, we could use your expertise.”
This quickly treaded into dangerous territory, and he had a glint in his eyes. The male was Akkadian, a nation that used to ally closely with Maeve. The fact that they had a delegation here, told you they weren’t a large threat to Terrasen, but everything about this situation felt wrong.
Every warning sense inside of you flared, telling you you shouldn’t be alone with him, shouldn’t be here, shouldn’t entertain this. Your magic subtly tested the area, and felt no-one familiar nearby. Fuck. You were capable on your own, but a likely centuries old Fae warrior was before you.
“I’m afraid that’s not in my skill set,” you said, “but I’d be happy to guide you towards some resources.”
“I thought it was in your blood,” his mouth curved into a half-smile - like he thought he’d trapped you somehow.“ I’d recognize one of you anywhere.”
Like an actor slipping into a role, you let puzzlement fill your features, “I beg your pardon?”
He pinned a look with you, like you were being annoyingly obtuse. He wasn’t wrong, but you wouldn’t let him get away with vague statements or threats.
“One of your ancestors' creations,” the way he said the word stiffened your spine, “is in circulation, causing some problems.”
“Consequences can pass through time and generations,” he said quietly, poking at the fire. “If someone seeks you out, asks you to find or create something, treat it with caution.” The words seemed to pain him. “Not all will have bad intentions, but even the best intentions can be skewed by greed.” He reached into his pack, flipping a dagger so the hilt faced you, and pressed it into your palm. You felt the magic immediately, and your jaw dropped. The runes and wyrdmarks were intricate. “Here’s a new lesson,” you perked up. “Take that, make it so only you can use it properly.”
“Thank you,” it was a gift - really, that he trusted you with the object.
“If you find another,” a creased but strong hand gripped yours tightly, you fought back a wince. “Promise me you’ll destroy it.”
Gripping the hilt tightly, feeling the magic flow again, a shiver ran down your spine and you swore an oath you would. Relief flooded his features.
Blinking back to the present, he had an expectant look on his face. Instinct told you he wanted this personally. If it was a state matter, there would’ve been others here to discuss it. Sure, you’d like more details, to ask more probing questions, but that would give you away. Right now, he was looking for confirmation and you couldn’t give that. A small thread tugged at you, a female voice whispering in your ear, leave.
“I don’t know what you’re speaking of,” not a lie - you really didn’t, “but as I said, I’d be happy to guide you towards some resources.” His lip curled back, but you didn’t give him a chance to reply. “I’m expected,” your voice was confident and firm. “Let me know if you’d like me to put some notes together.”
You stepped around him, striding as quickly as you could without running. Maybe you’d taken him by surprise, because several seconds passed before you heard footsteps following.
Taking a sharp turn, you shifted and melted into the shadows.
Weaving through corridors, you found no peace until you had eyes on Ceri, finding Halle already curled next to her, eyes alert. The clock struck noon, and you watched a few more seconds - taking notes of the guards in presence, the sense of danger and panic ebbing away, before heading to the meeting you were now late for.
-
Vastly out of character, you’d shown up a few minutes after the intended starting time. Others were late, of course, but as long as he’d known you you’d always been early. Face pale and drawn, Rowan knew something was wrong. Scanning you, there weren’t any physical injuries. You were avoiding his gaze, not that you’d done much looking at each other throughout the week, but now it felt especially pointed.
Someone drew you into conversation, and he watched as a mask slid into place, few others would notice something was actually wrong. He nearly snarled at Fenrys when he tapped his shoulder, but the other male jerked his head towards the meeting room. At least you’d be in this one, where he could keep a discreet eye on you.
“Make sure y/n doesn’t leave after, something’s wrong,” he told Fenrys under his breath, an order.
The male stiffened next to him, and nodded. He watched onyx eyes trail over to you, before narrowing. You two had an easy-going friendship, and Rowan knew Fenrys was protective over you, just as you were over him. He hated it, but Fenrys was the best person to find out what’s actually wrong.
𝕲𝖔𝖙 𝖆 𝖘𝖊𝖈𝖗𝖊𝖙, 𝖈𝖆𝖓 𝖞𝖔𝖚 𝖐𝖊𝖊𝖕 𝖎𝖙? (𝕽𝖔𝖜𝖆𝖊𝖑𝖎𝖓 𝖝 𝖗𝖊𝖆𝖉𝖊𝖗)
WARNINGS: suggestive, use of dark magic
Nobody knew your secret.
Not even your mates knew.
Dark magic had never been seen well, in fact, you could say it was taboo.
The mere mention of this type of magic made even the most experienced warrior, who had seen things that no normal person could see, begin to tremble.
And you had this kind of magic.
Everyone thought you were one of the purest people there was. Well, that's what you wanted them to see. Sweet, loving, pure... All that to hide your true nature.
You weren't evil. Not like Maeve. But when you used dark magic... you transformed, and that good girl mask fell, revealing your true personality.
___________________________________________________
It was the night of the full moon and Shammuin. The best night to practice and let your magic out.
You waited until Aelin and Rowan were sleeping to get out of bed and go to the abandoned temple deep in Oakwald. You had discovered it when one day you decided to walk around it, and you found it by chance or it had found you.
There was no cloud, so the moon illuminated the entire path to the temple. Your black dress and your cape of the same color created a sea of darkness behind you. If anyone saw you now, they would think that death had come to pick them up.
You arrived at the temple, opening the door that you had been able to fix, as well as the roof and windows. You take off your cloak and with a movement of your hand the candles light up and with another movement the curtains close.
You approach the table where the books and more utensils you normally use are laid out.
And opening the book to the appropriate page, you begin.
__________________________________________________________
Aelin knew you were hiding something. Rowan too. So, when you sneaked out of the room that night, they decided to follow you.
They never thought that was your secret.
Carefully, they opened the door just enough to see inside. Dark magic. That was your secret.
They weren't angry with you, more disappointed because they thought you couldn't trust them, but they partly understood. Dark magic was taboo.
They opened the door a little more and saw how you were kneeling in the middle of the room.
You were saying something they couldn't hear, but they were captivated by you.
You raise your hands and throw your head back, giving thanks to Hecate on that magical night, where the threshold between the living and the dead was narrowest, and you could feel your ancestors and their magic.
The silver necklaces sparkled in the candlelight.
You get up and start dancing. And Rowan and Aelin were fascinated.
The dance was magical, something they had never seen before. Your body contorted creating shapes while you sang and danced to the rhythm of a song that could not be heard but could be felt in the air.
The dance was sensual and fascinating. An invitation to the dead.
They decided to go in and close the door behind them, closing the door with magic so that no one could enter.
At that moment you stop dancing, and your back exposed by the dress is the only thing they can see.
“I knew it wouldn't take long for you to find out.”
“Why didn’t you tell us?”
“I was afraid that you would reject me.”
You notice how they approach you. Aelin stays behind you and Rowan positions himself in front.
You look up, meeting his green eyes, in them, you noticed a little disappointment that was overshadowed by lust.
Rowan notices how your breath catches in your throat and you hear a small laugh behind you.
Aelin's hands run over your bare back, sending a shiver down your spine.
Rowan brushes the hair from your shoulder, leaving wet kisses on it, tracing your collarbone to your neck. A breathy sigh leaves your lips.
“Tonight, you are going to be our goddess and we are going to worship you in every way possible.”
You notice Aelin's breathing near the other side of your neck. Her lips travel a slow path to your ear, where he bites your earlobe gently and then whispers:
𝒂𝒍𝒍 𝒓𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕𝒔 𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒆𝒓𝒗𝒆𝒅 ©𝒓𝒐𝒘𝒂𝒆𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒔𝒅𝒂𝒖𝒈𝒉𝒕𝒆𝒓. 𝒅𝒐 𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒄𝒐𝒑𝒚 / 𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒂𝒍 𝒎𝒚 𝒘𝒐𝒓𝒌. 𝒅𝒐𝒏'𝒕 𝒄𝒐𝒑𝒚 𝒎𝒚 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒎𝒆.
Look at Us Now - ch. 22
Fic masterlist
I’m too much of a chicken to experience something remotely close to the game Rowaelin played this chapter, so I’m thanking Reddit for the lended knowledge lol. It’s very quick though I just always over-research
Warnings: brief mention of a cult, moderate alcohol intake
Words: 3,3k
Tumblr media
They were gonna die in this hellhole, and Aelin was killing Rowan a second time when they met in the afterlife.
They’ve looked everywhere for clues, tried cracking the puzzles, turned every hint inside out. This was a dead end, and Rowan only had one job: pick the fucking lock.
Just one more lock to open this wooden box, and they’d be free.
Aelin’s heartbeat picked up when she heard voices and steps outside. They were coming back. The members of the cult were coming back.
She met Rowan’s agitated stare from across the room, but he didn’t make a fuss, just frowned at the lock and went back to work, his posture rigid.
They were absolutely going to die in this basement, and Aelin wasn’t a fan of losing.
Aelin eyed the pentagram drawn on the floor, a heavy weight on her chest. She needed to do it. There’s no other choice, she repeated to herself as she laid down on it, a sense of emptiness taking over.
"To thee, O mighty Game Master, I offer myself willingly. May my sacrifice be a beacon, lightning the way for those I leave behind in the form of one more hint.”
She heard Rowan rushing her way, but it was done. Her self-sacrifice would give him one more clue, and he’d win this game for them.
“Take me, Master,” she repeated.
“NO!” Rowan fell to his knees before her, his arms wrapped around her waist. “I can’t bear it, Aelin. I can’t.”
She stroked his cheek, nothing but resignation in her eyes. “I’m doing this for you, babe. I’ll see you on the other side.”
“Let me find another way. I will find another way, Aelin—“
“Do you want me to repeat the three hints?” The escape room’s employee said through the speakers, “I know there’s a pentagram on the floor, but you can’t make a human sacrifice in exchange for another one.”
Aelin sighed, her body relaxing against the floor. Her clothes must be dirty with chalk now, and she didn’t even want to leave the game, but it would be a necessary evil. Rowan held out a hand, helping her get up.
“How’s the lock-picking thing?”
Rowan narrowed his eyes at her, humorless. “Reverse-engineering,” he corrected.
She crossed her arms, silently asking him to just answer her already.
He sighed. “Not great.”
Aelin analyzed the box and the padlock locking it, then looked at the card reader at the door. One card. One card was all they needed to win this.
Without thinking, she violently shook the box between her hands.
“What’re you doing?” Rowan said.
“It’s a wooden box. Maybe there’s a crack the card could slip through.”
Rowan froze for a moment, blinking at the scene. Then he held out his hands, “Gimme that.”
“What?”
“It’s a wooden box,” he repeated, his tone low and astonished.
Next thing she knew, he was pressing all sides of the box against the card reader. When the door unlocked, Aelin’s laugh was nothing short of maniac.
“It’s a proximity card!” she shouted while jumping on him for a hug.
“It’s a proximity card,” he echoed, tugging her impossibly closer and kissing the side of her head.
Outside the escape room, the employee looked pissed. “The combination for the lock was on the back of the blinds.”
Rowan looked completely unaffected by the snarky Game Master. “You should put the card in a metal box if you don’t want people doing it my way.”
They were met by a cool breeze outside, the sidewalk damp in a way that indicated that it must’ve rained while they were playing inside. She turned to take a look at Rowan, and he was already studying her. Despite the cloudy weather, something about him—his features, the way he carried himself, or the frequency in which his lips tugged up today—had a lightness to it, something Aelin didn’t know she longed to see so badly.
She squeezed his hand and instead of going somewhere—doing what they were actually supposed to do on a sidewalk—he leaned down and pecked her lips. It was a quiet mid-afternoon anyway, they weren’t slowing anyone down.
He hummed contently in a way he sometimes did after tasting her, cupping her face as if she was something precious.
She chuckled and checked the time. “We don’t have to pick up Maisie for another hour, so…” Aelin looked around, checking if there was somewhere interesting nearby; they had time to explore, but not too much time. She pointed at a quiet pub, wooden-looking in an old-timey way. “Wanna go there?”
It was nice having the day for themselves, no work to attend after working the graveyard shift. And as much as family time was her favorite, it was refreshing to do some adult stuff other than sneaking out from the five-year-old to get some action with Rowan.
After they woke up late in the morning, they decided their first date should have all the things they wouldn’t be able to do with a kid. So far, it included a fancy lunch somewhere they couldn’t even pronounce, some place they wouldn’t trust Maisie to hold the glasses. Then they went to a horror-themed escape room—not exactly romantic, but why not?—and their last stop was this expensive-looking pub.
They’d be back to princesses and Paw Patrol and nursery rhymes within the hour, but Aelin was excited for that too, to hang out with Maisie again. She got too spoiled with this new thing with Rowan, sleeping at his house during his days of custody. Now that she saw her daughter every day, Aelin was struggling to understand how she spent two, three days in a row without her. One sleepover at Auntie Sellene’s and she already missed Maisie like crazy.
The empty pub’s lights were dim, and the vintage furniture mixed with jazz covers of modern songs made Aelin feel like she was in an old movie. Rowan led her to a booth by the wall, and he wouldn’t take his eyes off the cocktail section of the menu.
“You want a drink,” she pointed out.
He frowned at the menu. “They just have a distinct selection, that’s all.”
Biting back a laugh, she nudged him. “Go on. I’ll drive.”
“Just one.”
She smiled. “I know, Buzzard.”
He seemed reluctant at first, but soon enough he was nursing his one whisky cocktail with a bottle of water while Aelin drank some mango juice.
“I was searching something online these days…” Rowan said, fidgeting with his cup.
“What was it?”
“I asked when I should tell my own child that I’m dating their mother. It was the first time Google completely failed me.”
Aelin snorted at the thought of a distressed Rowan searching this on his phone. She can imagine why there aren’t many online articles about their specific situation.
“Did you have a rule?” Aelin asked. “For how long before you introduce someone to Maisie, I mean.”
“Did you?”
“Six months,” she answered, plain and simple. “I never got that far with someone after Maisie, but I’ve had a bit of a relationship disaster because of this, so having the rule beforehand establishes a boundary, you know? In case somebody feels like rushing things.”
Rowan only stared at her, lips flat, looking sullen. He does know that she wouldn’t apply to him the same rules she did to a stranger, right?
“You’re not just ‘somebody’, though,” she added, “You’re her dad. That changes things.”
“Was it Lieutenant Cortland?” Rowan asked, completely changing the point of the conversation. Of everything she said, this was what he focused on?
Aelin crossed her arms, her eyes narrowed at him. “How do you even know I dated him?”
The faint blush on his cheeks must be because of the whiskey. “You told Elide, who told Lorcan, who told me.”
“Yeah, I was talking about Sam,” she finally answered, her back resting against the cushioned seat. “Single parents abide by different rules when dating, and not everyone understands that. He wanted too much too soon, and I wasn’t ready.” There was also the issue that Aelin wasn’t exactly eager to get serious with Sam, but she didn’t feel like adding this part to the conversation.
Rowan nodded, looking down at his half-empty cocktail. He looked almost crestfallen, and Aelin was struggling to understand why.
“So… six months.” He sipped his drink. “You want to wait six months before we tell people?”
Aelin wanted to argue that, technically, they’ve already told people; their best friends fit into the ‘people’ category, but that’s not what he meant. Rowan wanted to be able to kiss her in front of Maisie, feel his parents’ pride when he told them the news, stop pretending they’re not a couple at Maisie’s school so those fucking moms would stop hitting on him.
Gods, she wanted that so bad. Especially the last part.
Still, Aelin and Rowan carried a lot of responsibility together. This little bubble with no questioning of their relationship or putting more expectations on them wouldn’t last forever, but she felt comfortable in it.
Besides, Aelin didn’t like to even entertain the thought of her relationship with Rowan not working out so soon, but if it didn’t… Well, she’d like to keep a last shred of dignity, if only to attend Yulemas at Uncle Orlon’s.
“Not six months,” she finally replied. “It’s not fair to use the same rules with you as I'd use with a stranger.” Aelin grimaced. “Three? I tried asking Yrene, but she wasn’t really helpful.” Therapists and their maddening non-answer answers.
“Three months.” Rowan slowly nodded, his eyes vacant. “One down, two more to go?”
“Sounds good,” Aelin said, and Rowan agreed, but he didn’t look like it sounded good. With a sigh, she rested her chin on his shoulder and held his hand. “We can talk this over again if you realize it doesn’t sound good to you, okay? We can talk anything over again if you feel like we should.”
His answer was a kiss to her forehead.
˜˜
“Three months?!” Lysandra shrieked after Aelin told her about that conversation, and her loud tone earned a few glares from the ladies at the table near them, not that she cared. Still, she lowered her voice to say, “Honey, if I had a man like that, Timmy would be calling him ‘daddy’ by the third month.
“I mean, you could.” Aelin wiggled her eyebrows before taking another bite of her chocolate cake. Rowan was currently with Maisie, Dorian and Fenrys at the adoption event, and she used this kid-free time to try on this new pastry shop with Lys.
The woman narrowed her eyes. “I could what?”
Aelin stirred her coffee, a Cheshire cat grin on her face. “Hunter told Asterin and Asterin told me that Wesley has a crush on you.” And this is completely reliable gossip because Hunter, Asterin’s husband, is close friends with him.
“Oh.”
She frowned. “You don’t sound excited.” Half of the single moms had a crush on Wesley, the widowed single dad. Aelin was part of the other half who didn’t really care about him, but could understand the appeal. And she heard her friend comment about how ‘fine’ Wesley looks more than once. “I thought you’d like to hear that.”
“Well, obviously, I’m flattered.” Lys took a bite of her lemon pie, her chin in her hand while she clamped her lips shut to hide a smile. “But I kind of just started seeing someone.”
Aelin gaped, surprised. “Tell me.”
She didn’t know who he or she was, but she was happy for her. Mala knows the amount of shit she took from Timmy’s dad, some entitled man from Adarlan she hated just from hearing a few stories here and there.
“So, remember that birthday party we went to last month?” Aelin nodded, so Lys continued, “You posted a picture with me. You tagged me in it.”
“As millennial Instagram etiquette requires me to do.”
“Your cousin Aedion followed me, and—“
“No!” Aelin poured all the disgust she felt into that one word, grimacing. “I mean, ew!”
Lys straightened her posture. “I get it if you're upset.”
“Why would I be upset? Because you’re too good for my idiot cousin?” Aelin schooled her face into neutrality and sighed, trying to look a little more serious so she could give Lys a proper response. “Look, it’s fine. Just spare me from the sordid details, and we’re good.”
“Alright.” She relaxed into her chair, looking pleased with that answer.
“So you two are a thing now?”
“Not exactly. We chatted a lot and he asked me out, but I didn’t want to go without checking with you first. But I also didn’t want to make a fuss because of one date, you know? So I went. It was amazing. I blamed it on the sangria for making me see the date through rose-colored glasses. So I went on another one, completely sober, just to make sure. It was so good that I almost begged him to fuck—“
“Fucking Mala!” Aelin’s face morphed back into disgust. “Okay, I get it, it’s new. Good luck with his pineapple pizza obsession.”
To be honest, she wasn’t all that repulsed, and she totally blamed it on Rowan. It was those near-daily nighttime orgasms and early morning cuddles—sometimes orgasms again—getting to her head. Aelin was so happy she felt delirious; and after all Aed and Lys have been through in the dating scene, if they managed to find that as well, she was happy for them.
Said reason for her incredible mood texted her, asking her to drop by his place to talk. As if she’d go anywhere else, being his day of Maisie’s custody. His tone almost made it feel like old times, but Aelin knew better. They had a child together, they always had something to talk about.
Knowing her daughter, the adoption fair must’ve been a total chaos. Aelin told Dorian it was a bad idea to bring Maisie along, but her friend insisted on playing the cool uncle.
She promised that she wouldnt ask for a dog at the fair, but it was just to set expectations. Maisie’s a puppy-loving five-year-old, it’d be ridiculous to think that she wouldn’t throw a tantrum when he saw countless puppies for adoption.
On the way home, her chest constricted to think of a distressed Rowan trying to wrangle his daughter. He was probably exhausted.
Aelin parked her car outside. She grabbed her key to his house—which they recently traded for practicality—but before she could get to the porch, Rowan jumped out of Maisie’s bedroom window, his hulking figure swaying a little as he landed. He darted her way before she could enter the house.
She grasped his face with both hands and kissed him, and it lit her up from inside out, waking up the fluttery feeling that kept mostly dormant while she was away. “Was this a throwback?” She gave the window a pointed look. “Because if you’re trying to make me think of our first night together…”
When he jumped her bedroom window because she still lived with Uncle Orlon and Darrow. Aelin had no idea she’d think about that night to this day.
Rowan didn’t look overwhelmed by memories of great sexy times, though. The crease between his eyebrows was deeper than usual, his lips tightly pressed together. He took a glance at the window he came through.
“We need to talk.”
He looked serious. Way too serious. Aelin took a step back, his keys still on her hand while her pulse picked up. “Is Maisie alright?”
“Yes!” He grimaced, realizing that his secretiveness freaked her out. “She’s alright, but I did something…”
Aelin tuned him out, her mom instincts taking over. She hurried to his front door, as fast as her breathing, and opened it without listening to Rowan and whatever made his speech frantic. She’d check on Maisie, then she’d pay attention to him.
And that’s when she saw it.
It looked like a hurricane passed through his living room. His coffee table was a mess, full of papers and unopened shopping bags. Pet shop shopping bags. A small, pink carrier was left on the corner, close to some uncleaned dog poop.
He wouldn’t.
Rowan absolutely wouldn’t. Not without telling her first.
Aelin shot her most menacing look of disbelief at him but, to be fair, Rowan held his ground. Her fury never scared him but, right now, she wished otherwise.
The house was absolutely silent, and he didn’t fight her this time when she marched into Maisie’s bedroom.
When she opened the door, her daughter’s wide grin paused the boiling under her skin.
“Hi, Mommy,” she whisper-yelled. There was a small ball of golden fur asleep on the little girl’s arm, so she couldn’t get up to greet Aelin. It was obnoxiously cute. Like meeting a new mom at a maternity ward, but it’s little girls and puppies. “I’ll tell you when Fleetfoot’s awake, so we can play with her.”
Aelin kissed Maisie’s forehead. “I’d love that.” Then she left as quietly as she came in.
He fucking did it, Aelin realized, heat plummeting through her stiff muscles.
“Seriously, Rowan?” she whisper-yelled back in the living room.
He opened his mouth to speak but Aelin beat him to it.
“Are you kidding me right now?” she pointed at the direction of Maisie’s closed bedroom door. “You gave her a dog? And you didn’t think to consult her own mother first?”
“I’m sorry.” Rowan looked like a deer caught in the headlights. “I tried my best bribes—“
She plastered a fake smile on. “Let me guess, they didn’t work.”
Rowan put both hands up, a flicker of relief on his face, like Aelin was finally beginning to understand him. “Yes! And—“
Aelin could only imagine the scene Maisie must’ve caused. Still, she yelled, “And you have no authority over a five-year-old?”
He does. Aelin knows he does, as much as she knows she’s prone to say hurtful things when she’s mad.
“Come on, Aelin, the house is big. It’s staying on my place, I’m taking full financial and caregiving responsibilities—
Aelin tilted her head back, her angry laughter almost berserk. “You fucking bet you are!”
His entire posture deflated, and Rowan had a wounded expression intense enough she looked away.
“Can’t we just talk?” Rowan’s voice was soft in an uneasy way, a mix of hesitancy and vulnerability. “We could go back to Yrene’s pdfs and—“
“Not now.” Aelin crossed her arms. “I’m gonna rage alone at home until I feel empty, and then I’m gonna think about it. Once I’m done thinking about it without wanting to say mean things to you, I’ll let you know.”
“And if you don’t?” He scratched the back of his neck. “Stop feeling angry, I mean.”
She adjusted her purse around her shoulder. “Then I’ll see you in therapy.”
They were still going, though their sessions have been rather uneventful after they got together. Maybe Yrene knew something like this would blow up sometime. Whatever. Aelin’s not the shrink here.
Rowan nodded without meeting her eye, then let her go.
She didn’t even get her car, needing the small trek to her house. Way too small for all the thinking she needed to do, actually.
The chilly wind bit into her bones, and Aelin soon regretted the thin shirt she wore. The street was deserted, the ruffle of the sidewalk trees being the background noise to her thoughts.
Fuck, that dog is cute. No matter how much Aelin raged, how petty she acted, she knew how this would end.
Besides, it wasn’t about the dog. Deep down, Aelin knew why she was upset.
They got together, and when they were starting to feel like an united front, Rowan committed to a decade-long life decision without her. What was up with that?
