Rating: Explicit
Pairing: Asura/Taishakuten (Onmyoji)
Summary: Taishakuten already knew he wasn’t supposed to talk to that man. He said it himself, after all. Still, there was something alluring to him, something familiar. There was no way Taishakuten was going to simply sit down and ignore that feeling, even if all he knew about Asura screamed of danger. Asura knew he shouldn’t let Taishakuten approach him. It wasn’t right, not after everything that happened. His choice to erase everyone’s memories was final, it was the best for everyone involved to see him as a villain. And yet… there he was. Letting the blonde get closer. The gears of destiny were turning again for them.

Have you ever gotten really into the source material of something where the adaption(s) are more popular and well-known and you have to grapple with the eternal headache of finding the adaptations lacklustre or outright antithetical to the source?
The anime adaption of my favourite manga is significantly better known than the manga itself outside of Japan. The anime rewrote almost every core relationship and character arc. It's been a trying experience looking for fellow fans. The fanfiction scene for it is so horrific I've given up.
The anime turned a girl who is stoic and distrustful and keeps her distance from a male character because she's afraid of him (and thinks he is manipulating the girl she likes) until he demonstrates he actually can be trusted into... A tsundere thing where she bullies him constantly and he belittles her back.
I need someone to understand the headache I've endured of people calling the ship problematic when the source material is about the two of them learning to trust each other and be more honest about their respective traumas. It hurts, OTNF.
I have learned the hard way that explaining the source material to those people will accomplish nothing. I imagine a lot of book fans endure this fairly frequently...
--
Ahaha. Yeah, adaptation wank usually boils down to this. Ditto reboot wank.
I don't think I have any fandoms where... Oh! I lie!
Lady Audley's Secret
That absolutely foul movie version that is the only recent adaptation should be ashamed of itself. Swapping the blonde and the brunette in a story where those things are integral to how they're being read by other characters? Adding cheesy modern feminism to a story that had 19thC feminism while deleting the best female character and making the awesome villainess into a wimpy victim? Removing all of the hoyay and the 19thC incest vibes? Giving it a weird and depressing ending? WHAT ARE YOU DOING???
But I'm honestly usually not that bothered. I liked the live action Yu Yu Hakusho. I thought the changes to Onmyoji made for The Yin-Yang Master: Dream of Eternity were interesting. I liked that Sherlock Holmes movie everyone hates that starts with Rupert Everett in an opium den.

💮 onmyōji (2023) review 💮
it took me longer than expected to finish this highly-anticipated adaptation, but boy am i glad i completed it!
first up, i just wanna say i have only read a few chapters of the stories by yumemakura baku, and and only seen snippets of the 2001 movie. i've not seen the sequel, nor the chinese adaptations (and certainly not played the games). that said, i am very familiar with onmyodo and its place and significance in japanese history and culture, since there are overlaps between it and taoism, buddhism, and east asian divination in general.
with that in mind, i was pleasantly surprised at how the anime eased viewers into the philosophies behind onmyodo, particularly with the concept of curses, the birth of demons, and rituals; everything was explained very clearly, with hiromasa as a stand-in for the audience, although i did wish that the show dwelled more on the supernatural aspects during the first few episodic arcs.
likewise, i enjoyed the relationship between seimei and hiromasa; and here is where the stans could fill me in, because i was very certain that the 2001 movies weren't as fruity as the anime. but still, the message was received, and i was very pleased with how their relationship was depicted – hiromasa being soft and very attuned with his emotions was a very heian gentlemanly trait to have, so it didn't feel out of place at all.
personally, i think the final arc could have explored more of hiromasa's death on seimei, but i think that short scene (barely a few seconds!) of seimei cradling hiromasa's sword was molto bene.
in terms of animation, i found it satisfactory; clearly a higher budget would have done the special effects more justice, but given that the onmyoji were more priests and academicians than jujutsu kaisen sorcerers, the relatively modest show of their abilities made sense. i will say, there were key frames in episode 4, especially with certain profiles and oblique angles, that looked rough.
the final three episode were beautifully animated though! and i adored the ending theme and animation!
also, this is just me being a mardy bum, but i think this would've worked better as a spring/summer anime than a fall/winter one, given the gorgeous floral motifs (although the cold seasons have always evoked intense fujo feels inside of me haha).
in all, as with ooku: the inner chambers, which aired a few months ago, i will not be object to a second season of this show – namikawa daisuke and asanuma shintaro did splendidly as seimei and hiromasa, and i would certainly love to see the other stories animated!

I remember seeing a fanart of Bleach that shows Ichihime and Renruki with kids but with chigo's thumb tied to a red string that spells out Bleach and ends up tied to Rukia's pinky finger. I found that image sick and was most likely made by non-east asian due to it not understanding what it means. IchiRukis defend it as harmless but clearly doesn't understand what it means. I'm asian but not from East Asia and I even got offended with it since I understand the meaning. Kubo did not show an actual red thread of fate but he did reference it on Orihime's confession thru the five lives, five loves statement.
It is one thing to support a non-canon ship but to twist the meaning of a cultural statement to support that ship is just BS. It's no wonder Kubo is annoyed and sarcastic against them then they get offended when he tells them to create their own manga and try to surpass Bleach and don't dictate him on what to do with his story.
NaruSakus can't do this crap to Naruto due to the Last as the red scarf Hinata has woven acted as a red string of fate between NaruHina.
Even the Chinese made game Onmyoji understand the meaning of it and treated it with respect. The Shikigami Enmusubi will only show the red string of fate to shinigamis that are bound by it like Kappa and Koi. It doesn't appear to the rest of the shikigami.
Lastly, I can't believe that expressing a differing opinion these days can constitute harassment and got that from an IchiRuki after saying that IchiRuki is a product between SP and Noriyuki Abe, the former animation director of Bleach. Fortunately, Abe is not involved in TYBW as Kubo opted for a new team and knowledge of his non-involvement made many people in the Bleach reddit happy as they are not happy with what he did to the early Bleach anime, particularly to the first two arcs.
Yup I agree Ichiruki is way more pathetic than NaruSaku at this point because they’ve deluded themselves so much that even after Bleach’s manga ending drawn by Kubo himself with Ichihime’s son and Renruki’s daughter, they insist that their ship made the most sense even over Kubo himself!
At least NaruSaku have mostly moved on to BoruSara (while ironically ignoring Himawaris existence and we all know why) in the next generation, Ichiruki fans will STILL scream till they’re blue in the face that Ichigo and Rukia were always meant for each other based on bullshit chapter covers and poems.
And thank god Abe is gone from Bleach! They were as annoying as the NaruSaku stan on Studio Perriot that invaded and destroyed Road to Ninja with their bullshit.
Like seriously Japan, before you hire these people make sure they have basic reading comprehension first!

Translation of the trailer for Takamagahara's final story arc
youtube
Legends say that the supreme goddess Amaterasu once separated sins from herself. However, these sins were reborn in the form of evil gods and together with a powerful evil god began to change the essence of people. Susanoo, who is the executioner of Takagamahara, managed to suppress the evil gods. Amaterasu turned into a true sun and fell into a long sleep. At this fortunate time, Yamata no Orochi opened the gate of the six paths. Following Susabi's prediction, Susanoo crossed space and time to stop Yamata no Orochi's conspiracy. Furthermore, along with the rest of onmyoji, he traveled to the worlds of the 6 paths to seal Yamata no Orochi and the evil gods. In the six sins that bring doom and destruction, there were hidden seeds of hope: Envy Gluttony Wrath Lies Pride Lust. The sealing of the evil gods, Amaterasu's awakening, the goddess of destruction. The struggle of light and darkness. Amaterasu, who has regained her full godhood. The final battle of Takamagahara arc will take place soon. The curtain is about to open.

another thing i love about onmyoji, atsumi's arc in particular, is how atsumi's talent for the flute was never... less than hiromasa's talent, actually
because we're told again and again that in order to receive something from lord taizan, something of equal worth has to be offered in exchange. and atsumi offered his talent in exchange for the return of hiromasa's talent
and lord taizan accepted it, so an actual god deemed atsumi's talent worth just as much as hiromasa's
i especially love that they aren't too heavy-handed with this, they don't have anyone pop up to be like "see atsumi? you were just as good all along, you turned into an oni for nothing!"
it's just quietly shown to us, in a way that's frustrating in the most exquisite way. like, genuinely a good kind of frustrating. because you as the viewer understand from that moment that atsumi didn't turn into an oni because of a lack of talent, but because of his inability to not compare himself to hiromasa (and because of all those around them comparing them as well, of course)
like that was pretty obvious already, that it was his inferiority complex rather than an objective lack of talent fueling his inner turmoil, but this final moment of a god accepting his talent in exchange for hiromasa's, silently proving they were equals all along, is just so profoundly sad in a way i adore

Hey, was wondering - what are some of your comfort watches? Like could be a movie or a show, just kinda curious really
my favorite show of all time is gintama, and there are a ton of episodes that always make me smile or laugh. you asked this at a good time, really -- my sister, who's also a fan, asked me a few days ago what episodes to watch in order to cheer up, which would be my comfort episodes. answer below cut. aside from gintama, i also love the disastrous life of saiki k and the free! parody 50% off. funniest shit ever made
for gintama comfort eps, i usually watch the skiing trip arc as my go-to (237-238), also episode 217, the wii arc (98-99), jugem-jugem arc (221-222), the host club arc (241-242), popularity poll arc (182-184), onmyoji arc (195-199), the baby arc (51-52), the rhinocerous beetle one (65), hasegawa intro episode (7), and the curry episode (end of 43 through 44)

Some notes of a chili role swap au that I will never write
AKA 1.3k+ words worth of headcanons ft. Archon Childe and Harbinger Zhongli :D
Rex Mare / Celestial Vanguard / Flawless Lily
Has served Celestia for six thousand years. And like his devotion to the Tsaritsa, this Childe has a seemingly unbreakable bond with Celestia.
As the Archon of Justice, he is their judge, jury, and executioner. He upholds the Heavenly Principles more than any of the other archons.
That doesn’t mean he doesn’t have his own morals and sense of justice. He firmly believes that the most certain thing about our world is we know nothing—that we are all just fools—and that only by continually seeking knowledge and truth are we virtuous. This means he likes learning new stuff and mastering it. Kinda like how og Childe is with weapons but with basically everything.
This is the main value of the Land of Justice and it is the foundation of the many Schools of Thought. This is also why Snezhnaya’s best scholars are called the Fatui :D
However, the god is not as flawless as his people think. He refuses to see what Celestia truly is because of his faith. [insert here the complexities of letting go of your devotion that ultimately boils down to fear. Fear of retaliation to a rebellion, fear of a stripped identity without your faith, fear of the loneliness when you learn your god never existed in the first place and she is merely a collection of ideologies that you hold so closely to exonerate yourself of your blind eyes and bloody hands]
If you read the second story in my Ajax: Champion of Dreams series, you might realize I have some kind of religious trauma HAHAHAHAHDJGKG (living in an Asian country that is widely Catholic and Christian will do that to ya ;)) this is why I need the Fontaine Arc to be Anti-Church. I’ve mentioned this before but damn it. I NEED. Or at least touch the complexities of faith (and losing it) as mentioned above. You know? Of course, I don’t want it to be heavy-handed and Honkai handled this stuff well so I just— aaaaaa
Tumblr media
Appearance: kinda like Taishakuten from Onmyoji but replace the lotus for the lily of the valley that actually chimes. They are the Damning Bells you hear before an execution.
Why lily of the valley? It’s the national flower of Serbia :D
Also, I know “cleansing bells” are more of an eastern thing but Catholics have bells too right? Bells are known to purify one’s soul or place of worship. If criminals think the god’s bells are damning, his followers revere them as their salvation. The cleansing of lilies in water—washing them of their impure thoughts and deeds. They are what gives them clarity so that they may hold court without bias.
To subvert the modern dystopia setting trope, Childe likes to come down from the White Palace to the valley and chill with the common people to ensure fairness among his subjects. This has made his country and its people endeared to him and he has become protective of them.
On one of his excursions, he meets a man from Liyue.
Fifth of the Seven Stars / Harbinger of Misery / Last of His Kind
五 (wǔ, the number 5) sounds like 呜 (wū) which is an onomatopoeia for crying. So number 5 in Chinese Numerology is considered unlucky.
Also yes, while the Tsaritsa needs Eleven Harbingers, Ningguang (the Geo Archon in this AU) only needs seven. She calls them the Qixing or the Seven Stars.
He is still a half-dragon, half-qilin but is far younger than og Zhongli.
About three thousand years ago, he slipped into a crack. He stayed in the Abyss for what seemed like 3 months but actually, millennia had passed in Teyvat.
In this world, Guizhong was the first Geo Archon but during the Cataclysm, she passed and Ningguang took the mantle.
Her death was not because of the Cataclysm though but because of her nature as an emphatic god—she didn’t approve of razing civilizations. She defied Celestia and paid the price. This is what sets Liyue’s vendetta against Celestia.
Appearance: He looks like White Asura. He wears a lot of white. A lot happened while he was gone and when he returned, it was tragedy after tragedy. And as a qilin-dragon and adeptus, he has a duty to Liyue and its people, so he’s immediately put to work. He hasn’t had the proper time to breathe and grieve. So he’s in an eternal state of mourning.
I actually have tried writing Zhongli, an immortal god who remembers everything, who is actively grieving (and it’s the hardest thing, let me tell you). I’ve imagined him trying to prolong his grief. I think he’d be the type of person to box it away because he has all the time in the world. Why should he have to face something that’s making him sad now? I think every stage of grief for immortals would take centuries.
So I think he actively supported Ningguang’s cause to not let himself breathe and grieve, not just to uphold the oldest contract. Because does he really deserve it when he wasn’t there to protect his family?
Anyways,,
A younger Morax was brazen and callous was canon, right? So I guess this is also what this Zhongli is. And he fell into the Abyss before the Golden Age of the Guili Assembly. So I think he’s more of an isolationist here like how other adepti are. He probably acts a lot like Xiao but has more bite and bark.
He was sent to Snezhnaya to steal the Hydro Archon’s gnosis. There he meets a man, picking lilies by a stream that leads to the sea. And he makes the first friend he’s ever had in… too long.
PS. Here is a picture of White Asura LOL. Listen His and Taishakuten's story feels like a chili role swap au. Go look them up, you won't regret it.
Tumblr media
Some worldbuilding stuff that nobody probably will care about because it doesn’t have anything to do with chili BUT this is here so that you can imagine what would be their first meeting like, what would be their first impressions of each other, how would they act around each other, etc. (I actually have my own imagined scene at the bottom hajasdhh)
Snezhnaya is mountainous that is good for fortress-like cities. From the tallest mountain, water falls from the White Palace (even at such a high altitude, the Hydro Archon keeps the water flowing) down to a river that leads to the sea. This river cuts through the valley that the mountains surround.
The forts and castles in the mountain region are home to the nobles. While the valley is for the farmhands and common folk.
The class system is such that philosophers are considered the nobility. Social mobility is possible through the Imperial Exams. If you’re good enough to bullshit through essay questions that test your ethical, logical, and legal knowledge, then you can have a piece of land and a title :D
Ever since the Cataclysm, and the death of Guizhong, the diplomatic relationship between Liyue and the other nations has been strenuous. Maritime trading has become less ideal but there is a small port in Snezhnaya (Morepesok) that connects the country to the others.
Liyue’s main trade has become highly regulated. Export has become more expensive and has become a symbol of status among the rich and powerful outside the nation. Handwoven silk now sells at a minimum of 10 million mora!
Liyue has the best relationship with Mondstadt. The in-land trade between these two nations is the “only way in” to Liyue so to speak.
Liyue was the Land of Commerce so when it closed off itself from the rest of the world, there was an economic collapse. Self-sustaining cities have survived this but there have been less fortunate ones.
I mostly focused on class and symbols of status and wealth because I imagine that in their first meeting… Childe looks like a fisherman. And from an outsider, that must mean he’s illiterate, right????? Imagine the insult to everything sacred to Snezhnaya when Liyue’s diplomat actually thought that the Archon of Justice and Court Trials doesn’t even know how to read or write. Imagine Zhongli actually having so much money that he’ll splurge it on the poor fisherman he’s somehow befriended. IMAGINE!
