i recently got into it !!! but actually i tried to play the original jpn version of the game when it first, FIRSTTT came out like back in 2020 (cause pandemic days, eyyyy) but i quickly realized that my japanese reading comprehension was not good enough to play through the game.

i did watch the yin yang master movies a couple of months ago. i remember the discourse when people called it 'xianxia'.

im actually familiar with the five phases! It came up in a korean novel that uses elements from various mythology, this particular thing in relation to a mythological exorcist. i considered that i might have mistaken it for that but i didn't think so.

another thing that feels similar to pentagrams is the '8 gates' (2 of which were life and death but I don't remember the rest?) i read in a xianxia novel, tho the writers could have made that up for the plot heh.

I know I whined about people not understanding my little fandom, but I didn't realize "It's not xianxia! AAAAAAH!" was more widespread than that.

I even had a Chinese-speaking friend go snoop around in Chinese fan discussions to make sure they all thought DoE was set in Japan and I wasn't insane.

The big issue is that onmyoudou/onmyouji canons are still historical fantasy, they're heavily daoist, and they're from an era of Japanese history when the aesthetics often look pretty Chinese to a modern eye. All that samurai and zen rock garden minimalism stuff shows up centuries later. This is full on penis hat-wearing, blinged out Heian period.

(One of my favorite things about historical costume dramas is how dumb historical hats look. I love them so much.)

The Heian period was basically trying to rip off Tang Dynasty China super hard, and a lot of Chinese fantasy uses Tang Dynasty shit too. Not to mention all of the "real" esoteric shit and traditional medicine and such is going to look the same even in a modern Chinese media that isn't overtly magical.

So if you're coming to Dream of Eternity or the other YYM based on the video game from being an Untamed fan or whatever, it's extremely non-obvious what's going on here.

Dream of Eternity in particular is in conversation with the two Japanese movie adaptations of Yumemakura's novels. Things like the sexy exorcism are drawn directly from there. I read some translated interviews where they straight up said they were referencing them a lot.

There are obviously both dragons and big snakes in Chinese mythology. However, my impression is that DoE was trying to reference Yamata no Orochi, though not very directly. The princess is pretty clearly Yao Bikuni. Qingming (Seimei) has shikigami, including a tengu. The thing with the demon playing a lute is a classic Japanese story that takes place at the Rashomon gate.

It's not like you couldn't have infinite stories about demons stealing important Asian-style lutes set in China. It's just that if you're familiar with the rest of this franchise and with historical Japanese writings, you recognize that story as coming straight from the Konjaku Monogatarishuu.

New Holicworks game: Tokyo Satsujinki Gakkou no Kaidan

Last month Holicworks announced their new 18+ BL visual novel, Tokyo Satsujinki Gakkou no Kaidan! The scenario writer (Nakajo Rosa) and director (Kouji Mio) also worked on the company's previous titles (Tokyo 24ku, Taisho Mebiusline and Beniiro Tenjou Ayakashi Kitan). This time the artist will be Asahi Miyabi, who I couldn't really find any information about, but the art looks very good so far.

Synopsis Amaterasu has existed since ancient times, as Japan's supreme deity. Aramatsuri, on the other hand, symbolizes the evil powers that also exists in this world. Good and evil, happiness and misfortune, life and death, all of it was derived from Amaterasu and Aramatsuri. Aramatsuri sometimes materializes and causes disruptions to the world, which can also affect humans.

The main character, Yuzuru Kurotori, is a civil servant working for the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. He belongs to the Aramatsuri Countermeasure Division, located on the 7th floor of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building. The department gathers individuals who are able to see Aramatsuri. There are various methods to test this ability, but in the end, they have to be able to see a huge flower on top of the clock tower in Yoyogi (which can also be seen in the picture above). It has been three years since Yuzuru joined, but Aramatsuri can still be sensed in Tokyo.

I definitely recommend checking out the official website, the main visual you can see above is actually animated! I hope the game will have animated CGs too, something I really enjoyed while playing some of their older games like Taisho Mebiusline and Tokyo Onmyouji. I’m a big fan of the protagonist’s design, especially the high heels, black nails and black sword! The website also introduces a couple of other new characters, which are probably going to be the love interests. Tendou Taki (the one with the glasses) is Kurotori’s senior who works for the same organization. He’s from a family that specialists in magic and divination (Onmyoudou). If you’ve played Tokyo Onmyouji, you might be familiar with these themes!

The second new character is Inami You (left), a man who’s originally from Okinawa. Although he’s a temporary employee of the Aramatsuri Countermeasure Division, he has the longest history with the department and knows the most. Due to the complexity of his career, most people don’t know much about him. He’s able to use Amaterasu’s power. Next is Tsubaki Isuzu (middle). He’s an entertainer who works as a stuntman and an idol, and doesn’t seem to be connected to the organization the other characters are part of. The final new main character is Isshiki Seimei (right), a bartender who owns a bar in Shinjuku Sanchome. He’s technically also an Onmyouji, but because Onmyoudou has been on a decline recently he gave up on making this his career. Although it’s not his official job, he can still use some of his spells.

I really hope they will show some of the CGs soon, but I’m surprised they revealed so much information already! I am curious what kind of form the ‘’Aramatsuri’’ takes, right now I have no idea what the battles will look like or what the flower on top of the building even symbolizes. The second part of the game's title literally translates to ''school ghost stories'' but none of the main characters seem to be in school. I'm guessing the plot also focuses on murders, because that’s also in the game’s title... Either way, I’ll be patient and hope they release more info about the game later this year!

Tsukuyomi Awareness of Seimei's Half-Spirit Heritage

So if Tsukuyomi was one forbade humans and spirits from marrying and Seimei is a product of that type of marriage why doesn't he/she out Seimei's secret to the masses?

It also raise many other questions related to Kuzunoha and the fact that she is a descendent of an Inari Fox (though was actually an Inari Fox in the orginal myths/folklore.) And how does Miketsu come in to any of this if she allowed an Inari Fox/Inari Fox descendent to marry a human? Wouldn't Tsukuyomi punished her and Kuzunoha for that? If Kuzunoha ancestor was an Inari Fox why is she not one? I am so confused because I do not know what is or isn't about Kuzunoha in Netease Onmyoji.😕

The sewing room decoration plan continues now that I've caught my breath again. I've decided that I'll unbox/set up at least one little figure a day until they're all done, and also start photographing at least one item to sell per day (which is mostly lolita stuff, but also a few figures and other merch). Today I did these four because I had extra time to kill this afternoon.

And I just want to say that ... Seimei has the dumbest design of any Nendoroid I own. It's so fiddly and fragile and I sat there internally screaming that I was going to break something. I get that his hair is complicated and his hat is fancy, but having to pull so many delicate pegs out to replace his faceplate every time is goddamn nightmare-inducing.

There’s a lot of variations about how and why the setsubun traditions exist. One of the many explanations says that originally “setsubun” rituals were practiced 4 times a year, on the day before the season changes. People believed that unfortunate things happen when the season change, so priests and onmyouji are summoned to perform various rites in the palaces of the emperor and the nobles. 

At some point the common people started emulating the rituals, and in time, only the “first setsubun” that marks the day before spring is celebrated.

The game doesn’t specify, but the sardine in the talisman is supposed to be grilled. The reason why is that legend says evil spirits don’t like the smell of sardines being grilled. The holly leaves is supposed to prick the evil spirits just in case they insist on coming near, so that they don’t go inside the house.
