A deadly and highly contagious disease known as the Great Contagion wreaked havoc on the world, spreading through the bloodstream and lungs of its victims. It caused widespread death, wiping out nearly ninety percent of the human and animal population. The disease had no cure, and the lack of resources and manpower prevented proper disposal of the countless bodies. Cities became grim landscapes draped in corpses, as the cries of the grieving eventually faded into an eerie silence. The survivors believed it to be their darkest hour, but little did they know what awaited them.

It is said that Creation, the world itself, is destined to descend into the chaos from which it originated. This chaos, known as the Wyld, is an amorphous and primal force that surrounds Creation. The world floats like an isolated island within this chaos, with the Wyld constantly encroaching upon its borders. The solidity of human beliefs and the remnants of the Solar Exalteds' mystical armaments had served as barriers, holding back the Wyld.

However, the Great Contagion shattered this defense. Entire nations crumbled, and those responsible for wielding the defensive sorceries of the Solar Realm perished in their efforts. The borders of Creation fractured, and the Wyld rushed in, accompanied by the armies of the Fair Folk, who had always lurked beyond the world's edges, observing, waiting, and hungering for its demise.

The Fair Folk swarmed across the lands in endless legions, bringing with them chaotic storms and vortices that tore apart the landscape. Vast portions of Creation were lost forever, reshaping the lands and seas into twisted forms wherever the Fair Folk set up camp. The remaining Exalted, already weakened by illness and the hardships of the times, expended what little magic remained from the bygone First Age in an attempt to repel the chaotic legions. Even the powerful Lunar Exalted, former allies of the Solars, could only slow down the monstrous advance.

Amidst the Fair Folk's march towards the heart of Creation, a solitary officer belonging to the Dragon-Blooded lineage braved the nearly impenetrable defenses of an ancient Solar weapon system. Through luck or destiny, she gained control over one of the most formidable weapons in existence, awakening it from its slumber. Empowered by the Realm Defense Grid, she decimated the hordes of the Fair Folk, driving them back in anguish and chaos, banishing them from Creation.

Now wielding the might of the Realm Defense Grid, the officer became the most powerful entity in all of Creation. The old ruling shogunate had been all but obliterated, with the shogun she had served and his descendants vanishing. With fiery determination, she reclaimed the remnants of her world from her enemies and compelled loyalty from the remaining forces. Consolidating allies and resources from her central stronghold within Creation, she crowned herself Empress.

Through alliances, political maneuvers, and strategic coups, the Scarlet Empress subdued her adversaries. Through marriages and relationships, she gave birth to a lineage of heroic figures, establishing lesser and greater houses that served as conduits for her influence and power. To maintain her rule, she pitted her own children against each other, creating a never-ending competition for authority, resources, and favor. In time, she infused her legions with soldiers and commanders from her own household and the houses of her most trusted children. Within a few decades, her forces marched beyond her central domain and ventured into the Threshold—the vast lands beyond her island—forcing her enemies to kneel before her might.

Trinity Continuum: Adventure!

Conrad Hawke was raised by American survivalists with as little contact with outsiders as they could get away with. Conrad hated it, running away several times to try to experience life as everyone else did. And upon discovering aeroplanes, he tried even harder to escape. Eventually, one attempt proved successful; he made it to a highway and snuck onto a truck, leaving before his family could find him.

Making his way to the first air field he could reach, young Hawke was taken in by members of the so-called Flying Circus, an informal network of pilots, mechanics and support staff. They taught him how to fly, and Hawke lived up to his almost namesake, taking to the skies and rapidly making a name for himself with the stunts he pulled off.

Of course, the greatest stunts come with the greatest risk, and a stalled engine can bring down a plane fast. By some miracle, Conrad survived, emerging from the wreckage wounded, but now Inspired as a Daredevil. His newfound abilities have allowed him to push further, pull off greater and greater stunts, and occasionally turn up to ruin a criminal's day when Conrad has caught up helping others. His fame has spread; now people around the world know the name of Conrad Hawke, and he has travelled the globe to perform for new audiences. Now he is returning to the United States via New York, and he wonders what excitement his newest friends will bring to his life.

Dark Fantasy isn't about being edgy. It's not about using all the "-isms", nor subjecting audiences to a neverending stream of terrible people being terrible.

It's about the entropy of a hostile world, wearing everything out. And those who still fight to preverse embers of light.

If you think the power of dark fantasy is in racism, misogyny, homophobia, etc., then you're looking at the surface and mistaking elements that aren't even necessary for the whole thing. Which is a mistake many authors do. Yup, calling that a mistake. I don't care, I love dark fantasy too much to pretend that's not the case.

Kentaro Miura knew this, as he created Berserk. The point isn't about the darkness only, no matter how you decide to put that in: it's about what protagonists do to find their place in said dark world, how they rage against it. Whether they fail or not, whether they keep trying or give up.

Look at Dark Souls and Elden Ring, I mean. Hollow Knight. Dark Fantasy is about Darkness and Light, showing how the latter trembles, dies, or endures in the former.

Side note: I look forward to you people seeing what we created for The World Below.

What is CURSEBORNE?

This might be of interest to any World of Darkness or Chronicles of Darkness fans or any fans of Onyx Path Publishing and White Wolf in general. We could be getting a new urban fantasy horror game series soon.

On April 10th, 2023 Onyx Path publishing’s blog brought up a hypothetical of making their own urban fantasy game series. Of course this was in response to their lack of any new WoD or CofD products as they do not own the rights to those IPs and must have approval by Paradox before working on anything. Currently Paradox is more focused on supporting their v5 products with their in house studio, Renegade Games and are no longer contracting other studios to right supplements for them for the foreseeable future. Because of this, the 20th Anniversary World of Darkness games and Chronicles of Darkness lines aren’t getting any new releases and what has already been announced and put into production are the only things to release in the near future. The only way for Onyx Path to make more urban fantasy horror games is to make their own and while they only mentioned this as a possibility, the comments section of this blog post exploded into discussions over this new potential game.

The next few blog posts afterwards continued the discussions asking people what they would like to see in a new potential horror game, such as a Masquerade system or signature characters as the comments sections only further spawned more discussion over this new world. Around this time too, Onyx Path announced their new unified version of their in-house system called Storypath Ultra, which should go without saying but will definitely be the system this potential game will be using. Then about a month later, on May 19th, on the official Onyx Path YouTube channel, this video was released https://youtu.be/fL1VPUzoB_Y?si=cR4ZPeb0wf9Kt6mM

A short seven second long animation of a murder of crows flying against a snowy tree line and the word “CURSEBORNE” forming as they all fly away. A short, mysterious teaser? Well for the next eight months Onyx Path would release a total of 30 videos of similar nature as of writing this post. Strange and short vignettes of classic horror tropes such as fog, spiders and recordings of monsters. Some would even be rereleased with minor differences and even text. I recommend watching some for yourself, there is a really eerie vibe to some. These capture more “modern” horror vibes when compared to WoD or CofD, some even feel inspired by analog horror or urban legends, the “Train” short particular reminds me of Japanese urban legends. Blog posts more or less stopped mentioning this potential game as time went on and mentions were then replaced with a strange picture of a moth, the same one at the top of this post.

On January 31st, 2024, 7:00 EST this website appeared https://www.curseborne.com/

CURSEBORNE, the title in all of those videos. The website has no text, just images of the same moth from the blog just posted all over a black background. Some will slowly fade in. Clicking on them will lead to a new page featuring one of the many teaser videos playing in your browser. Going back to the homepage, you’ll see a moth that appears to be glowing when compared to the others. Clicking it sends you to a Typeform quiz asking “Who are you?”. Answering it gives you a strange title such as “Raptor”, “Gaki”, “Archivist” etc. with a description of how you act. If I’d have to guess, these titles could be the names to new monsters or factions in CURSEBORNE. I’d like everyone who’s interested to please take this quiz and post your results on this post to see how many titles, or “paths” are found.

In short, it looks like Onyx Path is gearing up to make a new urban fantasy game using their own system. It’s not going to be World of Darkness with different names, but its own unique take on the concept.
