ooc. Kaveh definitely regrets leaving Alhaitham. He tried to go back at one point but he didn't. He was too young and proud to admit fault so he didn't return, leaving their relationship in ruins (like the home offered by the Akademiya).

One of the reasons why he feels he's in debt to Alhaitham is due to that guilt. As much as he wants to say it but can't Alhaitham really was his one and only true friend for a very, very long time.

Kaveh resents not returning since it also made him realize he's just as bad as his mother. (Running away to escape his issues)

NGL I know its a controversial scene, but I genuinely love the "Adult Kiss" scene from End of Eva.

Like I know some people say it's "Out of Character" for Misato but I ask you how???? Like half the entire series is hammering into you that this woman, despite having at least some form of familial love for Shinji, is entirely willing to toss both it and her morals aside to get him to pilot. Like this woman, multiple times, explicitly ignores the severe trauma piloting inflicts onto Shinji to guilt him into it because "he has to". So no, I do not think its OOC for her to offer an "Adult Kiss" to him on her deathbed if he gets into the Eva. She knows he's desperate for any sort of affection at this point and that it will get him to pilot so of course she'll toss aside morals and decency to do it.

And yes its disgusting, its awful, and that the point. You are supposed to look at this scene in horror and go "what the fuck is going on???" You're supposed to despise her for it, to thinks she's an awful human being, because she's explicitly offering a 14 year old the promise of sex (that she knows she will never be able to fulfill) if he will just get in the fucking robot again and this is a bad thing.

I won't speak to directorial intent because I A: am not in contact with Hideki Anno (despite fervently desiring to pick his brain about Shin Kamen Rider) B: do not speak Japanese so cannot read his interviews unless its through the lens of a (potentially flawed) translator and C: Am too fucking lazy to look up said interviews anyways. But I will say that, whether retroactively or not, Eva is a genuinely good commentary on the "Relatable Angsty Teenage Protagonist" because Shinji is incredibly relatable when he first shows up. Poor self-esteem, absent parents, issues connecting with people, etc. But as the series goes on and Shinji descends further and further to start to relate less and less and start to wonder "Why aren't any of these adults seeing. Why do they seem to miss or ignore the obvious traumas Shinji and Asuka have and why do they continue to push them to do something that only hurts them. Why don't they question the narrative, of why the teens are the only ones who can Pilot or whether its even true or not?"

TL;DR yes Misato is an awful human being, and yes just about everything she does in EoE is entirely in character for her

Happy Munday! Just a few quick things, plus some cosplay photos from a recent convention (under the cut, in order not to clutter the dash with OOC content).

I am still accepting starters for this starter call! I'll close the call on Saturday, November 18. Until then, I will not have a cap on starters beyond writing one per mun/blog. This will likely be my last starter call from now until the beginning of 2024, so if you'd like me to write you a starter that isn't attached to a meme, this is your chance! I will still share memes when I have the time in my schedule to start new threads, but for those of you who don't like memes and prefer starter calls, this is the best way to interact with me through the holiday season.

I'll be a little quiet around here from today until Friday: I've got two long days in the office and then I'm celebrating my wedding anniversary on Thursday after work (with a considerable amount of food and champagne), so my writing and chatting time will be limited this week.

That said, I've finally had some time to look at my cell phone photos of my costumes from my last anime convention. I'm still waiting on photos from my private photoshoots, but in the meantime, I'll share a costume I haven't posted here yet. I predict some of you may recognize her (hi Bubblez!).

Did you know that I've either played or watched my husband play both AI: The Somnium Files games (because watching me try to play through the somniums is a stressful experience for everyone involved)? Now you do!

Actually, I've had my Boss costume for about a year now and I haven't been in a happy place with it until last month. Admittedly, my dress is a bit oversized after I lost weight and I need to take it in in a few places before wearing it again. That's the only thing that has stopped me from doing a private photoshoot with Boss.

In any case, she was my favorite out of the games and one of the very few (maybe only?) character I cosplay as who is older than me. How is this woman in her forties? I thought I had amazing skincare and genetics but Boss is on another level.

The jacket and gloves are both leather, with the dress made of a cotton/poly spandex and the boots being custom pieces that I ended up repainting to be a closer match to my jacket. The Ai-balls are from Lemon Penguin, who loves Uchikoshi games and produces a few Uchikoshi-related items to vend at conventions (and they conveniently end up at the cons I attend!).

But let me say: I love this wig so much. It was a custom piece after I was hating my own styling attempts, and comes with her 'hair donut' ponytail holder, her slicked back tendrils, and a stubbed ponytail that keeps the weight of the tail and wig lighter on my head. When I get a professional shoot of this done, I definitely want more shots of this incredible wig from the back.

And finally, the AiTSF cosplayers I've met at conventions have all been so friendly and kind! I had to miss the photoshoot this time around but I participated at one at a previous convention: we were a small group but we were mighty. Even if we either weren't recognized or called by some other character name (I get Misato Katsuragi in this one quite a lot. Ironic, as I also have a Misato costume).

Which I think is why Rising doesn’t quite work. Asuka’s insecurities are driven by her mother’s insanity and suicide, both of which were the result of the latter’s involvement with Evangelion Unit-02. The only reason Rei Ayanami exists is for the role she’ll play in the Human Instrumentality Project. Shinji Ikari’s personality is a direct result of his Mom “dying” and his Father being a generally abusive asshole, both of which were the result of the Instrumentality plot. Why is that? It’s because, at least for Evangelion, the characters are fundamentally tied into the narrative of canon. Even something as batshit crazy as Shinji And Warhammer 40k, which stars characters who are wildly OOC compared to their canonical counterparts, tries to maintain many of the fundamental dynamics or over-arching superstructure from the show. Most, like HERZ or (my personal all-time-favorite) Taking Sights distort or deviate from canon, rather than throw it away completely. Almost all Evangelion fanfiction avoids going Pure AU. Which got me thinking about which media adapt well to AU format. (Warning: review and extended essay about what makes an AU work beneath the break.) But Rising is such an AU that it’s all-but-impossible to gel with the canonical source material. Now, anyone who’s read my fanfiction knows that I appreciate a good AU. In this universe, Shinji and Asuka are longtime friends, the Ikaris are a happy family, Rei is a distant relation of Shinji’s, and there are no Angels or apocalypses to be found. The Shinji Ikari Rising Project takes place in an alternate universe (AU), ostensibly glimpsed in the surrealist final episodes of the 90s anime. Now that I’m in a (marginally) better headspace, and can safely explore the edges of Evangelion (the EoE, if you’ll pardon the joke) without falling into a depressive spiral, I decided to actually power through my bête noire of Evangelion spin-offs. I must have skimmed the first few pages a dozen times, always putting it back because it didn’t feel right.

The most existential and emotionally traumatized pair in a long time coming with the trolliest and most lighthearted pair in a long time, yeah I’m sure this’ll be fine.

ooc. In regards to this post and other meta posts about Sampo's feelings on others, I think that's why I like him (and by extension Kaveh).

The world is so cruel and unforgiving and yet they both smile, they laugh with their friends. They love humanity wholeheartedly. Even as it clips their wings and makes them go through unspeakable horrors they still try to be happy.

There's drawbacks of course. The path to recovery is always a step forward and two steps back. I think this End of Evangelion quote fits them.

God knows I'm not perfect, either. I've made tons of stupid mistakes, and later I regretted them. And I've done it over and over again, thousands of times; a cycle of hollow joy and vicious self-hatred. But even so, every time I learned something about myself. -Misato Katsuragi, End of Evangelion

So even as angsty as I write them or write in threads, they'll always find a reason to smile and laugh.
