36- To Give Up Control
"I didn't fucking ask for this, you know."
Rodney looked at the Major, hurt and confusion radiating on his face.
"Uhh, you kind of did? I mean, you actually very explicitly asked me to come out and have a beer with you, so I'm not sure what exactly you mean by that," Rodney responded, and John let out a frustrated huff.
"No, I mean this," his arm waved around, encompassing the general space around them, "coming to Atlantis, being in command of an entire goddamn base of people, including civilians." John slammed back the rest of his beer- his second beer, Rodney noticed, and he was reaching for a third- and ran a hand through his hair.
"Oh," Rodney said, because he wasn't sure what else to say.
"I just... My career was practically over, I was banished to Antarctica, and then all because I sat in the wrong chair, I'm suddenly in charge of keeping people alive in a war I accidentally started in another galaxy? What the fuck, man?" John wasn't normally so honest or vocal about, well, anything, but the beer must have been enough to make the words start flowing, because now it seemed he couldn't stop.
"Every choice I make has such huge consequences now. It feels like I've been forced into playing God, like I'm... Like I'm somehow worthy of deciding who lives and who dies. No one should have that much power, that much control. Every choice I make feels wrong, but doing nothing is somehow always worse. I just wish, for 5 fucking seconds, I didn't have to make the life changing decisions. I wish I didn't have to be in control."
Rodney still isn't sure what made him act. He isn't sure he'll ever know, between the beer and the odd moment of calm peacefulness that seemed so rare in the Pegasus galaxy and the intensity John was speaking with- but something told him it was the right thing to do.
He took John's beer out of his hand right before he raised it to his lips, setting it aside as John gave him a confused look.
"Rodney, what are you-" John's words were cut off by Rodney's lips on his, his hands pushing John's shoulders back to lay against the ground of the pier. The tiniest sigh came from John as he went limp on the ground, completely at Rodney's will.
Rodney kissed him harder, moving to straddle John's hips to get a better angle. John's hips bucked up in response. Rodney's hand ran through John's hair, pulling slightly at the base as he started kissing down his jaw. John moaned.
"I'll take control. You don't have to make any decisions, any choices with me. I'll decide for you, all you'll have to do is relax. Just relax, John," Rodney whispered in his ear, and John melted against him.

Hi ily
I'm having thoughts of Lorne x Carson and since you're the Lorne expert I wanna know what your thoughts are
(feel free to ignore this)
OOoh, I love this, anon, and I'm super excited you asked (and super tickled that you think I'm a Lorne expert!!).
OK. Lorne and Carson. Hmmm. There's potential there! Carson getting all aflutter about some things, maybe that snark we sometimes saw that was also...anxious. Snarkily anxious? And Lorne would be like, "Uh, you sure you want to go there, Doc?" Because he has to deal with a lot of scientist snark, and he's seen where it can lead (bad places) sometimes, so he's just reminding Carson, but also be a little sarcastic himself (mmmm, love me some snarkily sarcastic competent Lorne). And that makes Carson look at him. With interest. In a surprised kind of way.
Or, or. Maybe it's Clone Carson. And it's awkward, sometimes, to be around people who watched you die, and were close friends, because they look at you sometimes, and it's a look that says they're startled, but happy, but sad and guilty, and missing something (someone) all at the same time, and it's just...awkward. So sometimes he wants to spend time with people who didn't know him the way Rodney did, or some of the medical staff. And one of those people is Lorne. Sure, they'd worked together, but not closely, and Lorne doesn't look at him expectantly, or forget that there are things - events, people, conversations - that he doesn't know because he wasn't there.
So sometimes they just kind of...exist together. Quietly. Maybe over a beer or whatever Carson can get his hands on. He learns about Lorne's painting, and he asks about things that he doesn't know, but that the original (and sometimes, he thinks to himself, the real) Carson knew/experienced. And it goes from there, little-by-little, both of them finding something in each other that they didn't expect.
Or, let's face it. It could just be some kind of dodgy 'I think this may be an aphrodisiac, Major' situation off-world, and Carson knew that going off-world again could get messed up, but right now he doesn't care, not at all, and Lorne's tac vest is already off, which is quite unusual, he can count on one hand the number of times he's seen Lorne without a tac vest, and Lorne is saying, "Better get those pants off, Doctor," and yes, yes, why are his pants even still on, that seems incredibly inefficient, he'll need to have a word with himself about it after, and possibly draft a memo, but right now, Lorne's shirt has come off, and my goodness.
In conclusion - Yes.

Things I need more of: highlighting the fact that Elizabeth had Rodney (along with Beckett!) hand-picking personnel for his department from what looked like hundreds of applications. He knew every single person and their qualifications! The job offer was probably underwritten by him!
OOOH I actually have a scene about this in Live Oak 5!!!!!! It’s more coming at it from the thought of Rodney feeling this excitement and power that he gets to be on the side that’s picking the team, rather than sort of worriedly shuffling in the background, waiting to be picked last.
It’s like the inverse of every gym class nightmare Rodney’s ever lived through; scrawny little Meredith McKay becoming team captain and selecting a squad of every other picked-last geek who’s ever been told they’re too smart for their own good.

56, 11, 74 for the fic writer ask meme!
56. What’s something about your writing that you pride yourself on?
the characters sound Right! they have their own voice, they behave like human beings, the dialogue feels natural. it's also fun to read - the rare times that i happen across something i wrote that isn't still seared into my brain and i get to approach it like something (almost) new to me, i have a good time with it, and i usually manage to make myself laugh. (almost like someone with my exact sense of humor wrote this for me, specifically. go figure!)
-
11. Link your three favorite fics right now
i'm not sure if this is about reading or writing, but i hardly read fic anymore, so i'll post some of my own. from 2022 or earlier, just because:
And I need you more than I want you (And I want you for all time) | h50, steve/danny
Silly wrong but vivid right | sga, john/rodney
Tell me the sky is falling now | starsky/hutch
-
74. You’ve posted a fic anonymously. How would someone be able to guess that you’d written it?
oooh, a very good question. honestly, that might depend on how hard i'm trying to avoid being recognized - if i really didn't want anyone to guess, i would resist the urge to add any rambly jokey tags, which could be an easy tell. but assuming i'm not deliberately trying to throw people off my scent, pfft, i bet there are a lot more quirks in the way i use language than i could ever pick up on myself. i mean that in an "english is not my first language" sort of way, but honestly, it could probably also apply to something as simple as how weak i am when offered a chance at a good (or mediocre) wordplay. also, you know. it would presumably be for a fandom that makes sense in some way if you've seen my tumblr.

So I was put on my own tonight in my section. I'm rightfully pissed off because it's a Friday, one of our busier nights. I tell the chefs upstairs I'm 86ing some of the harder to make items because I do not have time to be the order taker, cook and barista as is and these items will make it worse. They're fine with it so whatever.
However, the amount of bastard customers I had complaining because they couldn't get an over priced, sad as hell burger was baffling. Like, my dude, there is literally a 24/7 burger place DOWN THE STREET. If you're craving a burger at 1am that bad maybe, idk, WALK THE 10 STEPS THERE. Better yet, buy the ingredients and go home to make it yourself you lazy fuck.
I have empathy for customers who act like their lives are sooo hard because they couldn't get the food they wanted. Cry me a river, I've been sweating over grills and fryers running around taking care of people BY MYSELF for 9 hours thus far. You don't have access to like 3 things from our menu of 20+ items? Oooh poor baby, life is soooo hard for you.
Customers can lick my entire taint.
That reminds me of when I worked in the deli. Our manager would put out sides on random days. Like one day it’ll be corn, green beans, and potato wedges. Others it’ll be peas, carrots, and corn bread. I guess she based it on what main items she put out. But whatever it was there would always be customers we all called “old crows”. They were the older people that came in and nothing was ever good enough. The ham wasn’t sweet enough, the turkey was too dry, etc. they came in every day because the retirement community would run busses to our store every weekday. The old crows would stand at the case looking it over and we’d ask them if they needed help they would say not yet and keep looking. Sometimes they would take a few minutes, sometimes longer. They were looking at what we had out and trying to remember what was here yesterday that’s not here today and decide to want the missing item and only the missing item. And they would through such a tantrum if they didn’t get what they wanted.
The store manager decided it was pointless to argue because if they didn’t get what they wanted made they would find him and yell. If they still didn’t get it they would call corporate would would of course tell us to make the customers happy and make what they wanted. So of course we started making the item they wanted and if they were still here when it was done (because if the bus left before it was ready they would have to leave and they would always call and complain to corporate) we would give them the item and be done with it. Except every single  time without fail they would always HIDE THE DAMN ITEM! They would never buy it! They would put it behind the canned goods, or stick it in a freezer somewhere. I really hated that store and swore I’d never work at another near a retirement community again.

Oooh, this one's nearly ready to go out. It's one of the most graphic things I've ever written, sequel to Couldn't order a pizza in which John is masochistic sub to Rodney's sadistic Dom. It's porn with feelings - lots of heart, even more smut, John trying to get his head together post-epiphany and needing Rodney's most severe attention to ground him....
Here's a snippet from the start, just before things get very NSFW in Rodney's office...
---
Monday
John stood in the doorway of Rodney’s lab, watching the man who had just summoned him. Rodney wore that short-sleeved blue uniform shirt that showed off his thick biceps and, whenever the temperature dropped, his nipples too. Which were definitely looking a tad perky today.
The scientist was absorbed in something on the computer, so John just made his presence known, and waited. And waited. Nobody else was around, so John could indulge himself in admiring his Dom, and thinking about the week-long scene they’d negotiated. For the next seven days Rodney had complete control, twenty-four seven. He was effectively John’s owner, and John was his personal plaything.
“In my back office,” Rodney said eventually, bossy as ever, ushering John to the back room and locking the soundproof door behind them, after leaving a Do Not Disturb. John’s entire body buzzed in anticipation of McKay’s sadistic attention.
Need it hard. Harder than we’ve ever gone and then some, John had confessed to his lover, desperate for something that would get his feet back on the ground. He’d always been a masochist, always been able to get his head straight in the hands of the right sadist, and Rodney was the best Dom he’d ever had. John had never needed it like this before, though. Six months apparently abandoned in a time dilation field had fucked him up more than he cared to admit.
Rodney grabbed John’s biceps in a bruising grip and turned him, renewing the same grip and pressing his whole body close to John’s back.
“No talking, no sound.” Rodney said, low and firm in John’s ear. A rush of anticipation ran through John at the feel of his Dom’s hot breath, and the quiet command of his words.
Thanks for asking :)

What's your favorite fic? Who are your favorite pairs?
Oooh, fave fic is a tough one, but it's gotta be Mine and Apart, by objectlesson/ @alienfuckeronmain (whose wife did me the absolute honor of gifting me with a bound version? blaaaaaake!!!!). It's just so gorgeously written on every level, it's how the second person pov has never been done better, it's how fun it was to scream about in the google doc, it's a universe I think about every once in a blue moon and swoon over, it's epic. It's unparalleled, so yeah, that one, lol
As for fave pairings, my god, I read a lot, but here's a quick top 10 I've read a LOT in and loved a lot in, too:
Fox Mulder/Dana Scully, X Files Napoleon/Illya, The Man from Uncle Finn/Poe, Star Wars Harry/Louis/anyone, One Direction Lightning McQueen/Doc Hudson, Cars Merlin/Arthur, Merlin Lan Zhan/Wei Wuxian, the Untamed Rodney/Sheppard, Stargate Atlantis Alex Benedict/[first name] Columbo, Trent/Ted, Ted Lasso

hello hello this is your ask to facilitate the spencer reid/criminal minds ramble, so we're not joining together to create the longest post ever with our infodumping fjhdk <3
OKAY WAIT THAT'S AWESOME, first I have to clarify that I'm an introject of Penelope Garcia ( I use she/her and still go by that name so I'd like to give a heads up on that ) so my talks WILL be heavily influenced by that and the fact that I actually know spencer more than anyone because he is literally my bestie
First I'm going to be talking about the parallels and after that I'm going to talk to you about spencer, his relations and then some funfacts about him because he's adorable
AND FARE WARNING, I DID NOT HOLD BACK ON THE SPOILERS, I TRIED A LITTLE BIT BUT LIKE, I DID NOT, KINDA
"the other thing about rodney mckay is that he's a genius. two phds: astrophysics and engineering. smartest person in two galaxies if he's to be believed (and quite honestly, he is). he's got an ego the size of a small planet, but he can back it up. he is absolutely as smart as he claims. he's usually the one pulling miracles out of his ass as sheppard yells at him to do it faster." I'd like to break this one down cause that's when I started to see the similarities.
"he's a genius, two phds:" Spencer Reid, aka Dr. Spencer Reid ( PHDs ) is a notorious genius in the behavioural analysis unit, what do I mean by genius? well he joined when he was 22 years old, he has an IQ of 187, an eidetic memory and can read about 20,000 words per minute, an average adult can read up to 200-300 wpm for reference. he has three bachelors degree; psychology, sociology and philosophy and three phds; mathematics, chemistry, engineering ( like rodney mckay !!!!!! ). he also holds knowledge of forensic anthropology, this was show cased in big sea 06x23 when he was able to identify the sex and race via just the skeletal remains. but then again he holds the knowledge of MANY things, it's only natural for him because in his free time he plays chess and reads in the park ( he reads a lot that when he was having a really hard time at one point in the series, he claims that he ONLY read 5 books ), he gives lectures in universities, he searches things up like death and migraines in search engines ( bless him ), he attends seminars on stuff like brain chemistry and things relating to crimes, he reads blogs that mention carl sagan ( "what did I miss?" "you won't believe it, some idiot just posted a blog titled what would carl sagan do." <- paraphrased because unlike him, i cant remember everything ).
"he's got an ego the size of a small planet, but he can back it up. he is absolutely as smart as he claims. he's usually the one pulling miracles out of his ass as sheppard yells at him to do it faster." Spencer is also very much known in his lil friendship circle ( read: the BAU ) for being THE smart ass tm ( "have you ever talked with someone that continously wants to show you that they're smarter than you?" "*waves to reid* everyday" "i hate that" a conversation between morgan and gideon in masterpiece ) and the fact that he's always the one to spout facts and analytics and i recall one of the BAU agents saying that they started solving crimes WAY more quicker than they used to the moment reid joined the unit which is like, impressive.
"the other other thing about rodney mckay (oooh, look, complexities), is that he's a huge fucking wimp. absolute baby when it comes to any sort of physical danger. he has a deadly citrus allergy" This man? this man, the moment he went into the academy, he was immediately an exception, he couldn't do SHIT with any of the physical qualifications, anything that wasn't booksmart, he would crumble me thinks. there was an entire like, THING where he was shit on for not being able to shoot a gun ( see: L.D.S.K AKA 01x06 where he was brutally beaten the shit out of him and mocked by his superior; hotch for not being to shoot a gun as a forensic countermeasure and a tactic to not get them killed during a hostage situation, that was like the best episode me thinks ) and i'm ONE HUNDRED percent sure that he's lactose intolerant ( "oh again reid with the dairy?" "i can't help it, i love dairy" a conversation between prentiss and reid in 06x02, JJ and later on in the episode he's seen to exit the jet's bathroom while wiping his mouth )
"with a genius level brain going a mile a minute at all times." Waves, this is Spencer Reid, I don't think he's capable of NOT thinking, this guy just rotates stuff in his head [ OKAY STORY with me and reid; we, matthew / mq are studying medical stuff for college and he managed to get us to pass because he's DOWN BAD for medical shit, istg reid is just LIKE THAT : ]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
( "are you okay?" "yeah, i'm just thinking" "aren't you always?" "yeah" a conversation between reid and agent seaver in corazon, 06x012, which is an interesting reid centric episode )
"I don't know how to explain it succinctly. but the biggest change in rodney is about bravery and belonging.
in sg-1, rodney would have happily (well maybe not happily but certainly without question) had someone give up their life for his own. he hadn't yet gotten to the point of understanding how bonds like that are important.
by the end of the show, if it came down to it, rodney would die for atlantis. he would die for his team. but he also gained the trust that maybe, just maybe, they can get him out of the dangerous situations that he occasionally gets himself into in an effort to keep the rest of the team safe (or pure bad luck)." I HAVE SO MUCH EMOTION ABOUT REID, DR. REID IS THE TYPE OF GUY TO DESPERATELY TRY TO SAVE A KID WHO'S ON HIS DEATH BED AND NOT LET GO EVEN WHEN THE MEDICS HAVE ARRIVED, SPENCER REID THE TYPE OF GUY TO SACRIFICE HIMSELF IN COURT AND SAY "YOU CAN BLAME IT ALL ON ME BUT BY ALL MEANS DO NOT DRAG THE REST OF MY TEAM IN THIS" TO THE JUDGE ( PARAPHRASED ), SPENCER REID THE TYPE OF GUY TO SACRIFICE EVERYTHING FOR HIS SURROGATE FAMILY BECAUSE THEY'RE ALL HE HAS LEFT BECAUSE EVERYONE HE KNOWS AND LOVE DIES EXCEPT FOR HIS MOM BTW, HE'S A TOTAL MOMMY'S BOY, SPENCER REID THE TYPE OF GUY TO BE SO CLOSE WITH HIS TEAM THAT HE TRUSTS THAT HE'LL SAVE THEM EVEN WHEN HE'S BEING TORTURED AND THREATENED TO BE KILLED ( SEE; THE BIG GAME AND REVELATIONS ), SPENCER REID THE TYPE OF GUY TO FEEL RESPONSIBLE WHEN HIS FRIENDS GET HURT EVEN WHEN IT'S NOT BECAUSE OF HIM, SPENCER REID THE TYPE OF GUY--
ALSO, huge huge huge parallels with diana reid, his mom and jeannie btw; a genius ( a college professor ) and started a family with a lawyer and had a son, spencer reid, and reid hasn't visited her out of pure guilt but he does sends letters and they're the only thing keeping her sane and feel loved and needed. AND EVENTUALLY, their relationship heals, spencer finally meets with his parents in memoriam season 4 and it's all just a bundle of sadness and childhood trauma and it hurts because reid is hurt, and his parents have been absent and he's been with himself for so long, he misses being read to at night, he misses being tucked in by his father, he misses being able to tell them that he loves them and not be burdened with the fact that his father hasn't talked to him for years, that he's been having dreams about his father being a murderer, that the last time he's heard from him was the night he left with an i love you that he interpreted as a lie, the i love you that had been haunting him and a letter that reminds him of so much hurt and sadness from when he was young that tells him why he left- and being told that his father left because he couldn't take care of him anymore like he used to - that he can't think of looking at them without feeling like he betrayed himself, that it was his fault, and every day he wakes up and falls asleep to the thoughts that his mother is in pain because of him, that he doesn't visit because of the guilt, because of the pain and fear, their bond has been withered over the years and those days, things unravelled and the truth hurt him even more but at least now he can look at his parents in the eye and say 'sorry, and i hope you're sorry too.' and they did, and they are.
she tells the BAU about emberassing stories from his childhood, and the shows the BAU emberassing photos from her picture book, and she worries about him like a mother should and he does that classic 'mooooommm' whine and it's, so delightful. their relationship and interaction in the show is beautiful, it kills me
here are the spencer reid relations!!!!!! SHOWN VIA PARALLELS ALSO, the more i think about them, the more deranged i become
"there’s elizabeth weir, lawful good leader of the atlantis expedition, who cares so much about every person there." OKAY elizabeth reminds me SO much of jennifer jereau aka jennifer lamontogne if we wanna skip to that part of the series where she's legally married!!! she's the media liason UNTIL season 6 JJ where she's forced to transfer to pentagon, but she comes back to season 7 as a fully fledged supervisory special agent AND a profiler, she's my favourite, im inlove with JJ "there’s john sheppard, cocky flyboy allergic to talking about his feelings but regularly willing to blow himself up to save other people (who’s way smarter than he lets people think)." IS IT BAD THAT HE REMINDS ME OF DEREK, no because, he's literally, he's THE jock archetype but slightly less asshole behaviour and everything else except for the fact that he's athletic, loves women ( bless him ) and enjoys one night stands and did i meantion he likes women? but like, he's REALLY passionate, compassionate and understanding and he has SO much layers with his backstory and im kissing him on the MOUTH but that may just be because i'm penelope garcia and on the show we're notorious for joke flirting with each other "there’s teyla emmagan, leader of her people and full of such incredible strength and grace." EMILY PRENTISS, she's THE girl bestie me thinks, she's such a complex character and that's a WHOLE 'nother discussion for another day but she's like, awesome ( "what're you wearing?" "a gun" paraphrased conversation ) "there’s ronon dex, warrior with a tragic backstory and dry wit and hidden affection." aaron hotchner core, he has such a tragic backstory and his life is being like, SLOWLY TAKEN from him the more the series progresses, his wife is dead, his childhood was shit, his father was terrible, but dare i say even through that, he's a single father that cares about his son; jack so much, he's a strong leader that prioritizes their safety and does NOT stand up to any bullshit, he's reasonable and literally everything about aaron hotchner is beautiful to me
"you have laura cadman, a marine/explosives expert who rodney can’t stand because she loves to tease him" laura cadman also reminds me of derek!!!!! he and reid have a very like, bickery bond and it's quite adorable!!!!!! and best part? ALL OF THEM CARE FOR EACH OTHER. there is NOT a passing moment where they aren't trying to save one another, there isn't a moment where one is excluded, they all love each other and it tears me apart ( if you're wondering where penelope garcia, tara and david rossi, etc are, i couldnt parallel them to any of the characters )
"and there’s the intricacies between the relationships where you have teyla and ronon as the aliens on the team not comprehending the shit rodney and john say about earth or their pop culture references" penelope and reid, they ( we ) are CHOKEFULL of references!!!! penelope and reid go to CONVENTIONS with one another!!!!!!!!!! and NONE OF THE BAU KNOW OR GT THE REFERENCES SOMETIMES "and you have john and elizabeth starting out clashing but eventually melding together as a command team really well" reid and prentiss, when prentiss joined reid was in the process of detoxing because after the events of revelations, reid got addicted to a narcotic called dilaudid to the point that during a dangerous disease outbreak, he refused to take any of the narcotics he was being offered when he was infected - but reid ended up being an asshole to prentiss because drug withdrawal does that to you ( we can relate ) "and you have woolsey trying to integrate into a group of people who are already so close knit" basically any new addition to the BAU after gideon joined ( the original team, at least ever since the start of the show was hotch, gideon, reid, elle, derek and jj ) but the one that stands to me the most was definitely when prentiss was added!! "and you have rodney’s really ridiculous crush on sam that’s mellowed out enough she can actually stand to work with him" reid has a crush on JJ but it wasn't really expanded on, FUNFACT that im really angry about, reid was supposed to be bisexual but it was dropped via his crush for JJ on season 1 :(( "and the way that everybody fucking hates kavanaugh because he’s totally insufferable skjfd." OKAY THERE'S THIS REALLY REALLY LIKE, SHITTED ON CHARACTER NAMED ERIN STRAUSS AND SHE WAS THE BAU SECTION CHIEF, AND LIKE, THERE'S A LOT OF CRAP ON HER AND I UNDERSTAND ( my beloathed but she's an interesting character )
and I know it's somewhat? all propaganda? ( handshakes with stargate btw, i can see parallels even with the show, it's absurd how many parallels there are, im going insane ) BUT THEN AGAIN, this was made like, 2005 and you know 2005 - there's a lot of like, stigma in this show too but ive been looking at it in a very critical lense and its quite good if you literally take everything out and the fact that everything that's stigmatized the system is, which is actually kinda funny to me but it's there and the show DOES somewhat improve but it came to it's end on season 14 ( THAT MANY SEASONS BTW ) and there was an entire thing where there was a clickbait season 15 JAJDSJ OH AND THERE ARE THREE SPIN-OFFS BUT THEY'RE ALL DISCONTINUED BECAUSE OF LOW RATINGS
anyways, criminal minds is an awesome show that i enjoy and it has a lot of potential, if you have any questions PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE ASK ME, I NEED TO EXPAND ON EVERYTHING. I KNOW THEM MORE THAN A N Y O NE ( this is like genuinely because im like, i was literally there, face to face, i experienced all the shit in that show )
HERE ARE THE FUN FACTS ( all copypasted from the wiki because i, by no means, can handle typing any more, help my hands hurt ) :
He considered studying the classics (literature) but had previously read all of the course material so he opted to go to Caltech and study Mathematics instead (according to an article on William Reid's computer in "Memoriam"). In "Painless", he also mentions graduating from MIT.
He is an expert on historical serial killers, statistics, geographic profiling, graphology, and body language. He also seems to display fast counting skills, possibly related to his card counting skills, both of which skills have been observed in multiple occasions.
His mother was a professor of 15th-century literature and read many things to him, including some of the earliest Valentine's poems (Chaucer's Parlement of Foules, mentioned in "The Fisher King, Part 1").
He is an avid Star Trek, Star Wars, and Doctor Who fan.
He dressed as the Fourth Doctor from Doctor Who while going to a convention with Garcia. He knitted his own scarf for the costume. ("Hit")
He likes soap operas ("P911").
He is a skilled illusionist ("Derailed", "52 Pickup", "Run", "The Storm", "Saturday").
He is afraid of the dark "because of the inherent absence of light". ("The Boogeyman")
He loves Halloween. ("About Face" and "Devil's Night")
His favorite childhood movie is Babar: King of the Elephants.
("Seven Seconds") If Reid wasn't an FBI agent, he would be a cowboy. ("Rusty")

oooh i would love to take a crack at a little exploration of my favorite characters' mindscapes à la gravity falls. it's always great to poke at a fictional character's psyche, and magical realism is my absolute favorite genre, but it also takes a mental & emotional toll on me so i just end up with notes instead of actual drafts
would be fun tho! another Ancient outpost, perhaps? designed for a macabre sort of therapy to assist with Ascension? i'm even pretty sure some kind of the same plot already exists out there. what i have in mind (heh) is probably like Doppelganger but instead of dreams you have actual, 'physical' manifestations of their inner world and written as magical realism (ok so maybe not an Ancient device, just part of the narrative structure so it's up to the readers to decide what's real and what's not)
i know i'd have a blast just coming up with Sheppard's. it would have to be dynamic and the fucker will surely resist, so the structure of his mindscape alone will shapeshift every time i blink at my screen. Teyla's would probably have more Wraith-like elements than she'd necessarily like, and Ronon's would be dusty and kept under lock & key not because he's not using his brain but because he's had to rely more on instinct and reflex these past couple of years and his true mindscape is a lot softer and more cerebral than he's willing to admit
Carson's mindscape looks a little like his childhood home. Radek's would have a prominent pigeon loft and a bitchy AI system that has a Canadian accent. Elizabeth's is Atlantis
In Rodney's mindscape, there's a beautiful but empty black Steinway with the letters J E A N carved on one of the legs

Rodney Teaches John To Be Selfish, Sheppard becomes the bad guy, and Johns god complex all caught my eye 👀
oooh such good fics!!
okay so Rodney Teaches John To Be Selfish is exactly how it sounds, rodney decides john needs to be more selfish and starts making him make selfish decisions. it was supposed to be just a silly little short fic but i'm ambitious and decided to make the end goal rodney convinces john to steal the city for themselves and defect from earth (bc that trope is so good)
Sheppard becomes the bad guy is still mostly in the brain storming phase, but basically the idea was the team gets captured and johns the only one who escapes and when he gets back with reinforcements, the team is already dead and john goes insane, steals a jumper and half the cities fire power and disappears in pegasus and just slowly starts taking out all of atlantis' enemies one by one. eventually lornes team runs into him off world and no one recognizes him anymore
johns god complex is a trinity coda fic where john literally actually fully thinks rodney is a god because he does impossible thing after impossible thing, and after trinity that delusion is shattered and johns nasty reaction is a result of him realizing that a) rodney is not a literal god, he's Just A Guy and b) john is hopelessly in love with him and doomed to repeat the same failures as last time with holland

mclorne of course, 28 and 40!
Oooh, thanks for these questions!
- What are their vacations like?
Their vacations are basically Rodney getting excited about having some thinking time, and he brought seventeen notebooks with the preliminary workings of seventeen new ideas, and he's definitely going to be working on all of them, thanks, because no one is trying to kill him, or distract him with dumb explosions. So wow, he's going to get so much done!
And Evan totally knows this, he knows exactly how it's going to go, so he picks locations that he wants to go to/see, because Rodney truly, honestly, does not care.
The first three days always go like this: waking up a little later, having a bit of an indulgent breakfast (not out of a package! actually warm!), Rodney mostly not really focussed on anything, and Evan saying, "OK, I'm just gonna..." and walking out the door off to do the thing he wants to do. And Rodney kind of waving, but he's already elbows deep in notebooks. And later there's dinner, and a little low-key sex, which is nice, because they're not rushing it. Unlike so often on Atlantis.
But then day four comes around, and Rodney kind of wakes up from his weird 'I can work without death threats!' fugue state, and looks around and asks, "Where are we even?" and "Did you go out yesterday?" And then he's on board for some holiday vacation fun, which is great, because Evan's got stuff lined up. Sometimes it's hiking out from the seaside cabin they've rented (after Evan chops some wood for a fire later, Rodney can just watch, he likes that), sometimes it's some kind of weird museum, which is fine and actually maybe almost interesting, and sometimes it's building something ridiculous and indulgent that Rodney can nerd out about. Also, the sex gets inventive and indulgent.
They always come back refreshed, and Rodney has so many new ideas.
Any special memories? Do they have a special place they like to go to?
Special memories include Rodney saying to Evan, "Hey do you want to --" and making a kind of awkwardly dirty hand gesture, which totally meant 'hook up', and Evan had had his doubts.
But it had been a long time since Evan had hooked up with anyone, and Rodney - for all his annoying tendencies - did sometimes make Evan laugh a lot, like, genuinely laugh, not in a mean way. So he figured why not, Rodney was also pretty hot, especially when he got worked up and just rolled over people, shutting them down. He's always liked pushy guys, OK? Sure, the pick up was awkward and a bit funny, but whatever. So he'd said, "Real smooth, McKay. But sure, yeah. Yes," and his breath had caught a little as Rodney had moved closer, boxed him in a little.
Sometimes, even years later, Evan still says, "Hey do you want to --" and replicates that hand gesture, a little smirk on his face, and Rodney narrows his eyes a little, but he always, always grins while he's doing it, and he always says something like, "Well, that's so convincing, I guess why not?"
No special places. Pretty much they take what they can get and are happy that they got it.

🃏 Wildcard for R.L.Y.! We need more mensa!verse stuff !
WIP Wednesday!
oooh so one of the things i tried to pay attention to in terms of differentiation for Rod vs Rodney was definitely speech patterns--Rod speaks more confidently, less like his brain is moving too fast for his mouth to keep up, without some of the verbal tics we associate with Rodney. I had the feeling, however, that in more emotionally heightened situations, Rod might also fall more into Rodney-style speech, so I ended up letting some of that come through in a couple of points of the fic. Idk I think the Rod-Rodney dichotomy is fascinating tbh!!!!

Hi rhys! new mutual matthew here, I am going to go absolute ballistic in your inbox ^_^
please tell me about the subtle yet meaningful character development, please tell me how much the characters changed yet feel the same - from the start of the show through their powerful journeys. i NEED to know how much love they share, i need to know when or how they realize how much they care for one another, i need to know when the characters finally see the love between all of them and realize that they'll be alright.
i need to know about the dynamic of rodney and his sister, and i especially need to know literally everything about this show, enlighten me because i am putting stargate atlantis on my watchlist
okay okay I'm gonna be honest I was half asleep and emotional and had just spent a couple of hours reading sga fanfiction when I wrote all that but yes. yes. I can tell you more. by which I mean I am actually going to go on about rodney mckay for longer than would be socially appropriate for any other setting. thank you. (I do touch on everyone else and the show as a whole but I will be honest, most of this is about rodney skfjsh)
so the thing about rodney mckay (my favourite character in the show) is that he's an asshole. bear with me here. he's an asshole in a way that's actually so amusing and so clearly a (poor) cover up for how he's a mess of neuroses and not used to caring about other people or having them care about him.
he first shows up in the original stargate show (stargate sg-1) and lets say his performance is. poor. he basically suggested the team break the cardinal rule of stargate: don't leave anyone behind. certainly don't leave your teammember to be erased in the buffer of the stargate, but anyway. sg-1 is also a good show but that's another ramble.
the other thing about rodney mckay is that he's a genius. two phds: astrophysics and engineering. smartest person in two galaxies if he's to be believed (and quite honestly, he is). he's got an ego the size of a small planet, but he can back it up. he is absolutely as smart as he claims. he's usually the one pulling miracles out of his ass as sheppard yells at him to do it faster.
the other other thing about rodney mckay (oooh, look, complexities), is that he's a huge fucking wimp. absolute baby when it comes to any sort of physical danger. he has a deadly citrus allergy that he goes on about at every given chance and will absolutely run away if he thinks he can get away with it.
so that's baseline rodney mckay. possibly the most high strung person in the known universe with a genius level brain going a mile a minute at all times.
I don't know how to explain it succinctly. but the biggest change in rodney is about bravery and belonging.
in sg-1, rodney would have happily (well maybe not happily but certainly without question) had someone give up their life for his own. he hadn't yet gotten to the point of understanding how bonds like that are important.
by the end of the show, if it came down to it, rodney would die for atlantis. he would die for his team. but he also gained the trust that maybe, just maybe, they can get him out of the dangerous situations that he occasionally gets himself into in an effort to keep the rest of the team safe (or pure bad luck).
but believe me, he'll absolutely still bitch about it. he doesn't lose that annoying charm--and trust me, it is kind of charming. there are real assholes in sga (e.g. kavanaugh, ugh) and rodney is not that. rodney will call you an idiot while saving your life and kavanaugh will tell you that it's hopeless and you should give up. and also bullheadly tell you he's right even as he's oh so terribly wrong. rodney isn't wrong. well, rarely. he did blow up a solar system that one time but, you know, it was uninhabited.
that's one of my favourite things about rodney honestly. not the blowing up a solar system thing, but the fact that he never stops being a blustering asshole for all his moments of sincerity; he's still a coward for all his occasional moments of bravery. he thinks he's better than you but he'll save your life, he'll just call you an idiot while he does it. he becomes a better person without changing who he is.
also he doesn't think biology is a real science which is so funny to me. yes, you're right, mckay, clearly medicine is vodoo djgdk.
jeannie miller (rodney's sister) is first brought up in letters from pegasus, if I remember correctly. during which, to give some minor spoilers, they think they're all gonna die and they're each sending messages back to earth for the people they left behind.
rodney actually spends most of his talking in circles about "leadership" and also absolute nonsense, but of course he has to have his one moment of sincerity, where he addresses jeannie. it's also, I think, the first episode where it's acknowledged how they are a kind of family now, these people in atlantis (”family is... important. I’ve come to realise that, because the people here have become sort of a surrogate family to me.”). those videos are never sent and turns out they don't die (surprisingly /s) but we saw it, even if jeannie didn't. yet.
jeannie is also a genius, of course, except that she isn't an asshole and also at one point decided to make a family and give up all the long nights and hard work that comes with being a genius. she married an english major and had a daughter, madison. rodney did not take this decision particularly well and then they didn't talk for 4 years. whoops.
eventually their relationship heals, with work from both sides, the start of which leads to one of my favourite exchanges in the whole show that makes me wanna cry and hyperventilate whenever I think about it.
and their whole relationship is so delightful. the actors are real life siblings so they know how to act like siblings. there's no 'bro' or 'sis' (does anyone actually talk to their siblings like that???) but jeannie is the only one to call rodney by his real name (much to rodney's everlasting despair) she tells embarrassing stories to his friends (as is her right as a little sister), she berrates him and they whine at each other. but they love each other, even for all the years they were estranged.
but, god, yeah, that’s just rodney. and obviously I have the most to say about him because he’s my favourite character, but there’s so many good characters in this show.
there’s elizabeth weir, lawful good leader of the atlantis expedition, who cares so much about every person there. there’s john sheppard, cocky flyboy allergic to talking about his feelings but regularly willing to blow himself up to save other people (who’s way smarter than he lets people think). there’s carson beckett, scottish doctor who puts up with so much bullshit from rodney but is good natured and endlessly kind and also kind of a bit of a coward too sometimes (there’s a reason those two are friends). there’s teyla emmagan, leader of her people and full of such incredible strength and grace. there’s ronon dex, warrior with a tragic backstory and dry wit and hidden affection.
there’s radek zelenka, basically the only scientist rodney actually considers capable, and aiden ford, an absolute puppy dog of a marine, and peter grodin, possibly the only other scientist rodney would consider capable. you have laura cadman, a marine/explosives expert who rodney can’t stand because she loves to tease him, and peter kavanaugh, a scientist rodney can’t stand because he’s terrible. and eventually there’s evan lorne and jennifer keller and richard woolsey and even sam carter (a main character from sg-1, along with col. jack o’neill and dr. daniel jackson, who also both turn up every so often), and they all have a place in this strange and wonderful city.
and there’s the intricacies between the relationships where you have teyla and ronon as the aliens on the team not comprehending the shit rodney and john say about earth or their pop culture references, and you have john and elizabeth starting out clashing but eventually melding together as a command team really well, and you have woolsey trying to integrate into a group of people who are already so close knit, and you have rodney’s really ridiculous crush on sam that’s mellowed out enough she can actually stand to work with him, and the way that everybody fucking hates kavanaugh because he’s totally insufferable skjfd.
and it’s the way that once they’re all settled in, they just trust each other (except maybe rodney, who trusts most of the scientists in his lab as far as he can throw them off a balcony into the ocean). there’s no question about it, it’s just there. there’s an episode where a virus causes everyone to lose their memories, and sheppard has a picture of teyla on a tablet and despite knowing nothing, searches for her because he knows she can help. there’s countless episodes where john throws himself into dangerous situations with full belief in his team’s ability to bring him out again (much to rodney’s constant stress: “you see, the thing is, colonel sheppard and I have sort of gotten into this habit of saving each other's lives, and it's my turn.”).
honestly, the plots range from borderline ridiculous to actual emotional shit and I couldn’t tell you which I prefer.
there’s an episode with this guy who has a “potion” that makes everyone adore him despite the fact that he is more insufferable than kavanaugh (I hate this guy <3). but there’s also an episode where rodney is slowly losing all his memories and they bring jeannie in to say goodbye and it’s. so much. and then again there’s an episode where rodney and cadman are trapped in the same body. so the mood is. variable. it’s great though, because sometimes you need shit that doesn’t matter. and sometimes you do.
anyway that’s my ramble I think skfjsd. thank you very much for reading and if you decide to watch it, I hope you enjoy it as much as I do <33333

So fun fact: My au Robin actually knows how to play the drums. And my Harry knows how to play on the electric guitar
Oooh! That’s awesome! My dhmis interpretations know how to play a few instruments- Robin can play a normal guitar fairly well but they are ESPECIALLY skilled with violins! (Bonus, they actually have a decent singing voice too , even with auto tune.. they make it work :3 AND they also used to play the piano too.. but that skill got lost over time for the most part :P) Red can play, again, a normal guitar well BUT he also can play banjos, electric guitars, and a LOT more (idk the names of more guitar-like instruments lmao- but in case u are wondering, he uses his musical skills ONLY to play “all star” on repeat) and then Doi can play the drums but is also currently taking guitar lessons from their dads!!
Bonus: Rodney plays the piano, he learned how to do so from his mom. Also never ask this bird to sing… whether they have auto tune or not… they are an absolutely horrible singer-
BUT YEAH!! Those are rlly cool headcannons tho friend! I’m sorry ehe I couldn’t help but ramble lol- STILL that’s rlly cool!
