the time I trolled 4chan as a fake flat earther for six hours in 2012

In July 2012, I got on 4chan and pretended to be a flat earther. I passionately argued for flat earth theory for six hours with almost no break. I kept a single thread going the whole time, getting over 400 replies. I’m not sure if I still have a PDF of the thread, but I do have some quotes from people who responded to me. Looking back over this a decade later, I am proud.

OKAY YES, I DO HAVE AN ISSUE. Because I would have expected Gutierrez sleeping with someone to have a lot of this kind of imagery here. Remember his vision of the Virgin Mary, “I will protect the boy”? I would expect tons of that kind of sacred overlay, I would want tons of that. But it was actually mostly elided, and this presentation makes it simultaneously less meaningful, what happened, and yet also more morally consequential? Because now it’s just very pedestrian and normal, and usually Gutierrez moves in this other sort of sphere, peaceable and strange and tender and sure, an air that brings all the popes to the yard, etc. Anyway I’m gonna have to process this development..

the story of the underwear cockles op

y’all wanna hear the story of how @amazinmango and i got this photo op at phxcon this weekend?

PART ONE: BEFORE THE OP

so here’s the thing: n o n e of this was planned. it was amazing, hilarious, ridiculous kismet. 

mango’s had his birthday recently, and so i brought his birthday present with me to phxcon. part of the present was a pair of jensen’s underbears (i think the text i sent mango right after jib was, “we’re close enough that it’s not weird if i buy u underwear right????”) bc i thought that was hilarious from jib and mango is a huge jensen fan and dean!boy. so the original joke was just that mango could have the bear underwear. i also got him a second pair in orange, bc orange is his fav colour. this was as far as i thought this would go. 

so i get into phoenix thursday night and give mango his present. we didn’t know there were cockles photo ops until friday afternoon when we saw hard tickets for sale. i distinctly remember being bummed that my hometown con had cockles photo ops for sale online but phxcon, the one i was actually going to, did not. but obviously once i saw they were available, like. THERE WAS ONLY ONE CHOICE. so after deciding it was completely financially irresponsible when we have no money, i bought the op. 

i can’t remember when it occurred to us that we had both the underbears and a pair of lucky orange underwear for misha in our hotel room. we wanted to do something fun and funny for the op, and cracked ourselves up at the idea. but we were also aware that it could be, you know, kind of sort of maybe intensely uncomfortable to be like (a) i know what underwear u were wearing and (b) here i brought pairs of them for you to further laugh over. i have a T E R R I B L E akdslkjkas embarrassment squick, so we didn’t want to do anything that made us uncomfortable, and we definitely didn’t want to do anything that would make misha or jensen uncomfortable. we wanted them to have fun with us and play around with us. 

we ran our idea passed our roomie, who has some good con experience, to see if she thought it would fly or not. we agreed on judging our plan based on their mood on the day and asking them if they felt comfortable enough to do it was the best course of action, with a back-up plan ready to go immediately just in case, so j+m knew we were serious that they could totally pass on it if it was weird. CONSENT AND SAFE SPACE. we were hella concerned about this. 

PART TWO: THE PHOTO OP

sunday we get all our props together, the underwear for Plan A and the wigs for Plan B. (both mango and i have mohawks, so we bought them mohawk wigs so the four of us could just mohawk it up). finally tickets for our op get called and i bounce all the way down the corridor next to mango, first as a joke and then for serious because i started to get nervous/excited and asking mango who was gonna talk and how were we gonna get the backstory out quickly that they were mango’s birthday underwear and it was just too funny and coincidental to us to pass up and we love them and we’re sorry and they can totally say no. 

so we get into the room, and at this point i’m chanting PROPERTY TAXES in my head to try to adult maturely and repress the hysterical giggling i’ve been doing for the last half hour, while also dancing around bc i always need to move, especially when i’m all adrenaline-y and happy and slightly manic (as anyone who has ever drank with me will tell u), and mango’s false mask of calm is completely dissolving as he starts swearing and we can SEE THEM and they’re RIGHT THERE and we really want Plan A to be a go but we don’t know and also they are like two meters from us holy shit holy shit breathe. 

at the j2 panel, jensen seemed like he was in a good mood, but that had also been a couple hours passed already. so we check in the handler, and she’s like, nah you’re fine they’ve been happy and playful all day go ask. so then it was us! and we showed them what we brought and did our quick spiel that i bought the underwear for mango for his birthday and they can totally say no; we just thought it was funny. so jensen and misha are, like, inspecting the underwear and jensen does really seem to like those underbears. he was like checking the size and holding them up against himself to see how they’d fit. mango mentions to jensen that i bought one of the last pairs because when i reloaded the website after paying, they said SOLD OUT. and then jensen leans over to misha and laughs that he should’ve bought stock in ethika. 

so at this point we’ve taken up wayyyy more time than we’re supposed to and get waved to move to the side out of the frame (we already mentioned we didn’t want to be in the photo once they said yes), and jensen and misha pose, and then given us back the underwear and i got a quick hug from jensen. 

PART THREE: THE AUTOGRAPHS

obviously after this both mango and i are, like, hysterical and super happy and can’t believe they actually fucking did the thing. and had fun with it. and it wasn’t awkward and they don’t hate us or think we’re creepy and we’re going to have an amazing, amazing photo. so, like. i know a lot of people will cry before/during/after their photo ops, but for me, apparently my response is just loud, uncontrollable pleased cackling. i laughed for the next hour and 15 minutes just continuously and bouncing around and waiting impatiently for the photos to come out so we could take a picture and be like  LOOK AT WHAT WE DID. which is when i posted the op yesterday. 

right after that, jensen and jared started signing autographs. so we’re waiting for our row to be called while i’m watching my phone start to blow up with notes and questions and mango and i also realize that we’re starving and need to go get food stat. 

we’re standing in line for jensen’s auto cramming bacon-loaded grease sandwiches in our faces with one hand and watching our phones with the other hand when i start to notice the op getting tagged with #underbears and people asking if we’re going to get them signed. and, okay, i love you fandom. i love you so, so much, so i say this with all the love in the world. but when i read the tag #underbears i literally fell down on the floor laughing because that was the funniest shit i had ever heard in my life at that point. and was like, MANGO WE NEED JENSEN TO SIGN THESE I HAVE TO TELL HIM ABOUT THE UNDERBEARS TAG. and mango was like, well we’ll ask but say he can sign something else, and i was like, no no no he h a s  t o i have to tell him that his underwear has a tag and it’s great and i love everything right now. 

so again, once we got up near the table, we asked the handler if it’d be okay, and they were like, oh please he’s signed like four pairs already. so: score! 

jensen totally remembered us, and we thanked him for being such a good sport about everything, and then i told him about the tag. which his response to was an eyebrow and a, “well, r a w r.” in that smirky smug playful attractive asshole way of his. and then he signed the underbears with rawr as well. 

we thought that’d be it (i was after mango for autos, and was waiting for jensen to sign my thing quickly), but then jensen asks mango if he’s tried ethika and what he thinks and mango says yes and then jensen gets into this, like, two minute discussion about underwear preferences and how comfortable ethika is. to the point where he leans back, spreads his legs, pulls up the hem of his shirt, and shows us like almost the entire crotch of the underwear he’s currently wearing. which were these:

so. you know. THAT HAPPENED. 

he’s also a size large.

and to anyone STILL wondering if it was the bear underwear jensen had on at JIB: uhh, yes, yes it was. and to anyone STILL wondering if we made jensen uncomfortable: no, no, we didn’t. we took a lot of pains not to, and he laughed and joked around with us both at the op and at the autos. 

we’re getting the jpeg, so high resolution is coming, so you can see their ridiculous smug teasing faces better. i’m probs gonna write up something about the rest of my time at the con, because that was ALSO amazing, but at least now you have the Saga of the Underbears.

So long story short I was a really big fan of bts for awhile but I got bored of them when boy with luv came out, didn’t listen to it that much but it grew on me. Tonight my mom called me into her room bc bts was on James Corden and it made me realize that idk I’ve kinda felt empty without them. The point of this: I don’t really like one of the members. I don’t wanna say because I know the backlash for this member would be awful. I don’t know what to do bc I always hear Stan one of none. Plz help

holy shit i never thought that i can get an ask like this and i dont even know if im the right person or can explain properly dhdjdjdd but im gonna just say my thoughts ok? maybe they will help u maybe they wont we r all different and need different approaches right

to me personally the idea of ‘stan ot7’ is a whole realization that everything matters and without 7 members/fans/some dumb shit/whatever happened good or bad there wouldnt be bts we know and that member u may not like is also as huge part of this path as other members without this one member at some point there could not be bts at all its a short version of my thoughts

i dont wanna sound too loud or weird rn but every time people say ‘i read the lyrics and that song spoke to me oh it helped oh this song helped me to accept and love myself oh this song made me cry cuz this is the way i felt too this cured my depression this gave me strength etc’ if everything didnt happen the way it did (aka 7 members complicated path a lot of shit but also good things) there wouldnt be these comments from ppl all over the world there wouldnt be songs wouldnt be uh lets call them saved fans cuz as i saw many people discovered them when they felt really bad and their songs and lyrics and messages helped them

so about not liking one member

1 when i first discovered bts and watched my first mv (ok even before that and when i only saw one clip of bts randomly without knowing them) i had a bias already and he made me dig a little deeper and when i decided to have a blog on tumblr at first i was following only blogs about this member and no one else and thought meh i only liked him why should i follow someone else related blogs rn 🤷‍♂️ and i didnt know how the whole kpop wolrd worked at that time lol

2 after some time i got used to them but felt a little strange about couple members i just couldnt get them i was puzzled and careful

3 after some more time i watched a lot of content i read some things and oK i got a whole ass knowledge (idk how many months passed) about every member and i remember having a ‘oh my god i love him so much hes such an amazing human being and makes my heart melt’ thingy with every memberrr at some point but it happened gradually

but in ur case u were a big fan as u say before idk for how long idk how old r u idk what kind of person r u so this may be a little harder

so what do i think about not liking one member

we all r very different and our surroundings r very different and our minds too and our preferences etc etc etc and if u think about it as not a kpop situation it would be normal right dhsjdj but we r here talking about kpop and it has some rules so,,, i will continue i personally tried to get to know those members a little more and better to understand them to know what do they feel and how do they treat others or how others treat these members and what r their roles etc and even if i didnt like some idk lets say ‘habits’ after some time i just accepted these ‘habits’ like a part of their personality u know? but yeah at this point i think of them as a family hdjdjdjd after stuff they have been through and how they all supported each other,,, idk its so precious to me its huge and important maybe im a lil oversensitive or empathic but i get it a little and appreciate that they became the way they r today ( while im writing all of this somehow THE EDINGING OF WE R BULLETPROOF ETERNAL KEEPS PLAYING IN MY HEAD AND IM ALMOST A SOBBING MESS) idk how it works but with bts u r breaking ur own principles and it makes sth inside of u expand and be more open minded and mentally flexible

so as u see its a normal thing and even they got used to each other after some time 🤷‍♂️ (i mean not from the beginning and they needed that t i m e to learn and grow up and accept etc) and ITS REALLY PRECIOUS THAT THEY R AT THIS POINT RN THAT THEY LOVE EACH OTHER SO MUCH it makes me think a lot about me and my friends and rethink some shit or the way i behave 😔

ok about first question even tho i dont like solos etc even tho im ot7 i can say that people love to generalize anyway or love to attack or make assumptions so if u r not thinking anything bad about that member or not discrediting him and u r really realizing his huge role in their group and u just not a big fan of his ‘personality’ i think its not awful cuz we may not like some certain things in people and it happens esp irl with ppl 🤔 but if u r that type of ot6 like ‘ugh when will ______ quIT I H8TE HIM HES ABSOLUTELY POINTLESS’ its not good cuz well h8ing is the most self destructing thing lol and well wishing that someone should quit is also bad (and im saying this not from fans point of view) and should i even explain why

if its about second question hm u know after the beginning of this path of stanning bts and this fandom i faced many of my inner demons all of a sudden and after realizing whats the reason whats the source of those demons and after some work with them i felt a lot better and freer and relieved,, what if after accepting this seventh member and starting liking him too u will feel better too? what if its about having an inner conflict i really mean it think about ‘what do i not like about him/ why do i not like this or that/ is this that bad/ what if i liked ___ about him even tho i never liked this ever in my life/can i change the way i feel about it/ etc’ maybe u have this question in ur head rn cuz it meant to happen and u meant to work with ur inner state through this ?

i truly believe in few things 1 everything happens for the better (even tho realization can hit after many years) 2 everything happens in the best timing (for this thing! in ur life and u r ready for it) 3 if u dont like something and cant get rid of it just change ur reaction/perseption whatever that word is saying this from my own experience and there r more but dhhdhd

so at first just think about it if u need u can write it down somewhere it will help u to get to know urself better as well

ok maybe its not that deep but for quite some time whenever something bothers me i write it down to the notes starting from what happened what do i feel what exactly made me feel like this and why and what can i do to feel better

fr everyone can think of everything like ‘its not that deep’ but at the end of the day literally everything even little thing can help us with our mental state (after some work ofc) we better not underesetimate this world and things that happen to us 😔😔😔

also i wanna apologize for couple things english is not my first language so i tried my best but ofc there r typos and yes i dont have a habit of using punctuation i hope its not a big problem to u 😔

i only went for a single day ‘cause i just got back from another con in dallas and i was Tired™ but i just wanted to meet hayden and riz LMAO

alright LET ME JUST SAY this is the first convention that i had to show up at the fucken place at 5am. there was so many people i didn’t get into the building til 7am… then i had to wait 3 hours til the floor opened at 10am BUT THATS THE BAD PART HAHAHA

anyway, it was so fucken awesome!! i had a photo op with riz ahmed in like 10-20 mins so i couldn’t hang around and look at stuff, but there were SO MANY COOL THINGS!!! there were a bunch of different star wars designed cars - a bb8 car and a vader car (i linked my instagram) and so many other cool cars. lots of giant displays of sw stuff. huuuge screens of rogue one, a giant chewbacca funko pop, GIANT LIFE SIZE TIE FIGHTER, LIFE SIZE LEGOS 

anyway i had to go right to my photo ops. first was riz. riz was SOOOO FUCKING CUTE!!!! i had to make sure he was ok with hugs (bc i wouldn’t want them to ever feel uncomfy) and he was like ‘OF COURSE I AM’ and WE WRAPPED OUR ARMS AROUND EACH OTHER and my mind kinda blanked after that (HE SMELLED GOOD THO JUST SAYIN)

next was hayden, told that story a bunch on here - he’s such a sweetie, he thought i meant i wanted a hug before my photo op instead of during LOL but i’ll never forget his FACE BURIED IN MY NECK.. i could feel his breath against my neck LMAO SO.. HE GIVES SUCH GOOD HUGS!!! and after my photo i thanked him and told him i loved him and he bLUSHED and it was so cute he’s such a shy babe!!! but like once u talk to him he kinda opens up he’s a real sweetheart. i will neVER FORGET when i asked for a hug he really deeply was like ‘oH SURE’ and oh man lmao the eight year old in me was like MARRY HIM ARI

AFTER that i couldn’t line up for my riz autograph yet so i decided to explore a bit more. there were huge lego booths with star wars screens, huge funko pop booths with all the star wars exclusives, and the last jedi panel just got out where they showed the trailer for the first time AND EVERYONE WHO ATTENDED WERE CARRYING THESE LAST JEDI POSTERS AND I WANTED ONE SO BAD OH MAN. if you go on my twitter and instagram u can find some pics from stuff!!

THEEEEN i had to get in line to get my autograph for riz. i wasn’t originally going to spend the money on it, but bodhi is my girlfriend’s fav character from rogue one and i felt bad she couldn’t attend… so I BOUGHT HER ONE. i told riz that my gf loVED bodhi and couldn’t come and so i got her an extra autograph. he GRINNED SO BIG and was like “awwwwwwwwww!!!! tell her i said hello!!!” i got sidetracked from his voice holy shit. and i got my photo op signed by him, and he smiled at it and it was sO FUCKING CUTE GOD he’s really attractive rest in peace me.

AFTER THAT the rest of the day was mine to explore..i didn’t attend any panels bc the system for panel attendance for swc is really stressful u have to get wristbands at like 5am. but I BOUGHT AHSOKA FUNKO POP AND SOME REALLY COOL ART (LOOK HOW ANGSTY IT IS) and spent the rest of the day kinda chilling and shopping around like the sw trash i am. i visited the disney booth (which was so cool??? oh man.. the booth kinda looked like yavin 4 lmao) and got this really cool 40th anniversary shirt

PEOPLE WERE SO NICE AND GENTLE and people called me pretty and cute and gorgeous and were really tender!!! and the cosplayers were AMAZING, so many mandalorians and kylo rens HAHAHa. if ur into sw rebels - i saw the coolest hera and kanan cosplays it was so ACCURATE

BONUS: i didn’t meet mark hamill at swc but i met him two weeks ago, i can tell u the story about that!!! i paid 500 dollars to get this fancy mark hamill vip package and I GOT A PHOTO WITH HIM… and i was really shy bc holy shit mark hamill… and i was like ‘is it ok if we hug?’ and he was so excited and was like ‘ABSOLUTELY!!!!’ and pulled me in close and my CHEEK TOUCHED HIS AND HE WAS ABSOLUTELY THE SWEETEST

then i got mark’s autograph and i was nervous ‘cause i had NO IDEA what to say to him but he got me covered, he talked so much i didn’t even have to say anything, and he was really down to earth and treated me like he was my friend instead of a fan, he signed my photo op and i LOOOOVE THE PIC (in case ya haven’t seen it). he was talking about vaudeville???? and giving me random facts about things before i left it was adorable.

and his panel was G R E A T he always has the coolest stories!!! told us about how he didn’t know everyone (SPOILER ALERT) died in rogue one and gareth edwards told him right on set of rogue one when he visited, and he legit SCREAMED ABOUT IT LMAO. did his ~*dramatic luke pose~* (i put it on twitter here) and talked about carrie a lot here and here

BUCKLE UP this will be LONG 

disclaimer: i dont think im going to label them in any particular order though it’s too difficult

THE FIRST SCENE that comes to my mind is one that plays in my mind literally every day at some point. it takes place after marineford, where luffy is in his recovery process. one of the days he’s being all negative and stuff, calling himself pathetic and weak, all that jazz, and that irritated our boy jinbei. the moment itself was when jinbei straight up THROWS luffy against a rock and says, “I know you’ve lost a lot, and I know it hurts, but what is it that you still have?!”

once the question was able to absorb itself into luffy’s mind, he calmed down and began counting on his fingers. i DEADASS remember CHOKING when he started doing that!! EACH FINGER COUNTED AS ONE OF HIS CREW MATES!! BOY!! i was so, SO emotional at this point because i realized how much luffy really loved his pals and how much he needed them and GOD the flashbacks that went along with this moment just threw another heap of angst at me. 

imagine a lanky brunette in a boxing ring. then, imagine the word “angst” body-slamming this poor brunette gal into her own grave. that was me

the flashbacks had a pure little moment for each individual crew mate, and they were all just saying his name the way they always would as they were doing things that they would always do and it just ruined me. i missed the crew so much, and to see them brought up again in this kind of instance was so different and so eye-opening and so beautiful. also the music that went with it in the anime was so beautiful and the true breaking point was when luffy shouted “I WANT TO SEE THEM!” rip i want someone to love me like luffy loves his crew 

THE NEXT SCENE I CAN THINK OF IS 100000000000% SABO’S RETURN. i think that does a lot of explaining for itself. everyone had theories that he would return and i halfheartedly believed them but MAN OH MAN WHEN IT ACTUALLY HAPPENED MY LIFE FLASHED BEFORE MY EYES 78 TIMES. i am STILL trying to get over it. i dont think i can elaborate any further with this scene i think it’s just safe to say that this reigns as one of the most iconic scenes in this series. jesus leapfrogging christ. sabo is COOKIN my guys. wait ok i also wanna throw in the moment where sabo actually ate ace’s fruit holy shitbiscuits and gravy, batman. that was incredible. you bet your ass i cried. 

my next favorite moment of mine is all thanks to mr. grassy ass himself, roronoa zoro. i knew zoro had a kind of bond with luffy that was somewhat on another field than everyone else’s throughout the course of the series, but when he faced kuma for the first time and sacrificed himself for the sake of luffy, i realized that this man’s loyalty stretched much further. i was so astonished that this stubborn boyo was so willing to throw away his dreams for the sake of his cap’n, ESPECIALLY when it was zoro himself who said that “if you get in the way of my dreams, i will not hesitate to get rid of you”. even when sanji came and tried to turn the tide, zoro still wouldn’t take that shit. no way, no how. if he wasn’t letting luffy get hurt, there was clearly no way he’d allow anyone else on the crew to get hurt. gosh, sanji. what r u doing. he took ALL of luffy’s pain and STILL stood on two feet after. what an absolute legend. i want someone to love me like zoro loves luffy rip

next moment, four words, “I WANT TO LIVE”. to summarize, there was a point in time where i felt like i was invisible to everybody. i would allow my ass to get beat by life on a daily basis, and i just had no overall motivation to do anything anymore. i felt so useless to everyone, and boy it was so hard to find people that would tolerate me. but when i witnessed this moment with my own two eyes, it honestly changed my entire perspective on my life. it made me feel like i had a purpose!! we all knew robin had one hell of a rough childhood, and she never really felt like she belonged anywhere, and of course, not a lot of people liked her because she was different. she was so used to the feeling of being alone, but the goddamn rubber boy comes along and completely obliterates the darkness around her. he introduces the feeling of being loved to her. his words allow her to be reborn into a brighter world, and when i saw that happen, i knew that i should probably keep on keepin’ on as well. i knew that maybe soon, i’d find friends who will truly care for me. here i am today with the friends i’d always dream of havin. thanks luff. robin, keep being you. u are beautiful. luv my pals. also i rly loved how luffy declared war on the entire freaking world bc of her. u know what im gonna say now: i want ******* ** **** ** **** ***** ***** *****  

this last moment is really dumb and im mad at myself because i KNOW there’s a better scene, but since i cant think of it, i’m going to say that the davy back fight event with zoro and sanji holds a special place in my heart. it was golden all around. i have not a single complaint. ballman sanji lives on in my heart. though in all honesty im a slut for zoro and sanji combo moves since it rarely happens, so when i saw them absolutely DEMOLISH those bitches by using some dope combo moves, i YELLED. i am still yelling. quite honestly i am still yelling about 97% of what has happened in one piece thus far.
