I finished watching the finale maybe 10 minutes ago, but. God. God, no. It's just. It feels wrong, yenno? The end of the season I mean. I mean. Idk. I mean they just buried Izzy and then the rest of the show felt light and hopeful. The rotten leg's got to come off, is that it? Was he just a dead weight that was always going to be let go so that Ed and Stede could have their happy ending?
Idk. It just. Something feels off. Maybe (well, probably) I'm heavily projecting my own feelings rn but I mean, Ed found Stede's letter and told him he loved him, and now they're just like. Fine? So all of the issues their relationship had are just... gone? So like, what? Was Izzy a roadblock in the way of their relationship that had to be very physically, on-screen, gotten rid of? And now that he's gone, they can finally have their happy end? Is that what I'm supposed to be getting out of all of this?
Because. Well. I don't like that. I think it's cruel, for one. Having a character who's been through so much in the span of one season, just like, die. And not even a death that was especially honourable, like. He didn't step in front of a bullet to protect someone else. He was just there when a gun was fired. He was literally just standing there.
It's so over you guys.

Do you guys ever think about the fact that Su said we're blood, Lin and Lin was definitely bleeding awfully after getting scarred and that hearts pump blood and that hearing hearts is a part of seismic sense and seismic sense is very closely tied to the Beifongs to the point where only one person outside the family is known to possess the skill and it's a person Su considered family and

🪞 Mirror Man Analysis 🪞
Mirror Man is a perfect example of showing instead of telling, imo. His words themselves are often larger than life or egotistical, but his actions behind them showcase an underlining vulnerability, desperation, and self loathing.
And, in my opinion? Mirror Man is just as much as a victim as Claire.
Tumblr media
When we first see Mirror Man's full silhouette, he is in a very confident and reassured position. He looks like he is in control, getting Claire's attention with just a few words. "You're not going to walk by without saying hello?"
Mirror Man goes on to mention that "they're going to be kicking themselves." He desperately wants attention from others, and we can see this anxious energy in the way he nervously kicks his foot. And especially when he demands in a demonic sort of voice: "LOOK AT ME."
In the next sequence of events, we start to see Mirror Man's already shaky facade crumble. He sees himself as Claire through his reflection, super imposed on her body and hiding her face. As we know from the end of the short film, she is in a cycle of abuse.
His mirror selves smile, trying to pass off like everything is fine and dandy. He compliments himself, then immediately insults Claire on the only part of her he sees. It appears like this is mockery, but the next shots says otherwise.
Tumblr media
When Mirror Man fidgets with his hand, then clenches it into a fist, his vulnerability is first revealed. He immediately back pedals on his insult, saying that there "isn't anything wrong with (her ankles)" Essentially, he is projecting his insecurities onto Claire.
Tumblr media
Mirrors Man then says, "It's just... nevermind, my brain." He knows what he's saying isn't healthy, or right, yet he seems to find himself unable to help himself. He copes with this uncertainty by "fixing" his reflection, and the demonic voice reappears. His inner demon.
Mirror Man appears to spend a lot of time in the bathroom, as it is indicated at the beginning sequence with his array of beauty products. Yet, he says that "(he) often find(s) (himself) at (his) wits end in (there)." Like he doesn’t think he has any control over the matter.
Mirror Man rambles about his "journey" and how he is "a tiny, growing... thing." Junveille music boxesque music plays, hinting at his emotional immaturity. He seems to be somewhat self aware of his actions, going so far as to admit his faults in a roundabout way.
But Mirror Man never truly owns up to his mistakes, justifying them to Claire, his audience of his reflections, and ultimately, to himself.
Mirror Man proceeds to insult himself again, adjusting his mirror to cope with the sudden self loathing. He further infantilizes and justifies his actions to himself, saying "(Claire) can hold (him) in the palm of (her) hand." Ultimately, trying to claim that she has some power over the situation.
His inner demon sparks up once more when Claire attempts to leave, and he tells her that she "can spare a little more time." And she "acts like he's a complete stranger." As Claire's mother hints at later on, Claire rarely leaves the attic anymore, refusing to "be a person." Therefore, he is desperate for her attention.
He goes on to say how "everyone is mad at him," and that he is "growing." A lot of people may interpret Mirror Man as Claire's father, but to me, I think he's still quite young. Not in the sense of being a child, but being a man in his 20's trying to figure the world. A brother.
Mirror Man doesn't understand why people are "negative", and "see him the way they do", which seems like the most honest thing he says in this sequence. He truly does not undertsand why he was "turned down" by others. And if he cannot fix his personality, then he'll fix the next best thing.
His physical appearance.
Tumblr media
The following song is when his true character is revealed. Try to sing his song outloud, and you'll notice that you'll need to take in a lot of shallow breaths. Your voice will pitch and crack. I think this singing method is meant to mimic a panic attack, brought about Mirror Man's own pain and feeling of inadequacy.
Mirror Man rambles about what he needs to accomplish to be revered, or even liked by others, but his words are empty. His own coping mechanism, or delusions, have convinced him that all he needs to be do to receive positive attention is to be larger than life, akin to God. If no one loves him the way that he is, then he will be something better.
Mirror Man is determined to create a rift in the world, even if he needs to fake a smile and look beautiful. If his words are rambling and his brain doesn't work how he wants, he will find control elsewhere. He picks at himself until he is bloody, until he is caught up in the whirlwind of self obsession disguised as self care.
Tumblr media
In the end, the lyrics make Mirror Man appear like he has a superiority complex or narcissism. If he has narcissistic personality disorder, then it must be noted that people with this often have low opinions of themselves in reality.
In the end, I think everything stems from Mirror Man also being a victim of abuse. Interestingly, Claire is terrified of her grandfather and mother, while she is only unsettled when Mirror Man puts himself down and begs for her attention.
What would that mean for Mirror Man?
In my interpretation of the mother's flashback, a younger Mirror Man realized the prison-like conditions that he and Claire were in and tried to ask for help by calling for 911. His mother got angry, hitting him as punishment, all while a crying baby Claire watched.
Mirror Man mentally crumbled from the pain of her abuse, traumatized by the event. His mind dissociated from it all. His literal viewpoint of himself has been permanently altered in this moment.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The answer from 911 must've went nowhere, because Claire and him are still there. Claire takes Mirror Man's place, hence why her face blurs onto his younger face in the below shot. The many clocks indicate the passage of time as she slowly becomes the new household punching bag.
Tumblr media
The mother repeated the cycle of her own mother's abuse, but she did nothing to stop it from happening. She lives with guilt, taking drugs with her alcohol to cope, and projecting her pain onto her daughter. Smothering Claire, while also expecting her to be her caretaker.
It is too late for Mirror Man, or so he secretly fears. His psyche has mentally shattered like his mirror, and his false ego, his reflections, and Claire are all he has left. Unfortunately, Claire is following the same path of using an outside source to find attention and love where there is none.

So turns out I am going off on ideas for my new Trolls AU.
I've dubbed it:
Iron Opal AU
My own spin on the timeline after Trolls 2.
And an interesting way to get the bros all back together.
Branch teaming up with Satin, Chenille, Delta Dawn, and Barb in order to fight a power crazed Pixie who's taken control of the trolls and using Poppy as a puppet.
It's gonna be fun~

The Shard is a perfect parallel to the Crown of Barbed Vision
It's evidently dangerous
You can't even fucking hold it without hurting yourself
It'll never reach the right hands because there isn't any right hands for it
It was semi-safe before you took it, you've had opportunities to get rid of the burden of carrying it safely but you all refused
You don't have to keep it or take it or use it...
You all insist on keeping it and keeping it and keeping it-
One of you won't resist the offer of power. One of you won't be able to abdicate that power after you do.
And I am really hoping someone eligible bites the fucking bullet and takes it in

Worked on some hairstyles for Gel's siblings today!!
I've realized that Gel, and in relation, her siblings, have ended up being very black coded. So I've decided to lean into that! doing a lot of research to make sure that it comes accrost positively and accurately.
[More rambles under the cut]
So today, i decided to start with hair! Since that was the most immediately noticeable feature anyways i figured that was pretty important. Also, i found out that i really enjoy drawing black hair, and i think it's fun.
I referenced several images and hairstyles before settling on what i wanted for Gel's siblings to have and what i thought best fit their personalities.
For the twins, opal and topaz, i know i wanted some sort of updo for both of them, but for it to be different at the same time. Opal is a lot more lively and active/outgoing, while topaz is a lot more chill. Calm, mellow.
I decided to give both of them cornrows/braids leading into the hairstyles to have a similar base, but after that, i went very different directions.
For opal, i actually mixed two hairstyles. I took space buns to highlight their horns, but then i saw bubble braids [is that the right term?] And though it'd be perfect to give her two big ones coming down from the space buns. I think it turned out really cute!!
For topaz, i just left the rest of their hair out into a low ponytail, essentially, but with a bandana to help contain it some, but also so i could have the tails flip up and kinda reverse mirror opals horns. It's a much simpler hairstyle but cute nonetheless!!
I love how diverse black hairstyles are!!
Anways, last one! Jade/jaze has technically the simplest hairstyle, but was the hardest to choose the final look of. I debated a lot on the length and shape, but i really like the final look!
I swept their hair to the side to show off and highlight the crack in their skull, to show that they've accepted that its there and they'd rather show it than hide it. So to make sure the hole didn't get swallowed up in hair, i gave them an undercut with a fade[is that right?]. It was fun to add the shaved details highlighting the crack pattern.
Anyways, this was super fun, and i can't wait to make their finished designs/references!!

If Mako ever gets a love interest again, I hope it's someone whom he gets to be goofy and dumb with. Someone he feels comfortable enough with to be the stupid nerd he is. Like with Korra in B2 when he was showing off his cheesy cop one liners. Probably one of my favourite scenes in the book even though most Makorra scenes make me wanna curl up into an upset little ball.
It feels like Mako has this constant need to be the serious protector (I mean, understandable with his childhood and all). I don't think he'll ever let that fully down with Bolin and probably not with Korra or Asami. Not after the spectacular love triangle mess.
I don't know if there is a character I could ship him with for that dynamic. Maybe Wu, cause Wu is definitely also goofy, but I feel like Mako's position if being his bodyguard might make that difficult. I've recently been leaning towards shipping him with Opal of all people (even though I headcanon her as Aspec, but to what degree I'm not sure, and, hey, I already ship Weilin) I feel like she might bring out that side in him but who knows really.

I was asked a while back by @catygwen01 to do more Opal analysis, so I wanted to touch upon the grandfather's music sequence and overall character. Imo, he is another fantastic example of showing instead of telling.
What is most interesting are the two traits that give him the same fatal flaws as the rest of the family, including Claire: the use of escapism as a crutch and loneliness.
The only difference? The grandfather's flaws are the most extreme.
Tumblr media
If Claire is the beginning of the cycle of abuse (childhood), to Mirror Man (young adulthood), to the mom (middle age adulthood), then the grandfather is the end. (elderhood).
--
When we first meet the grandfather, with just a few frames, we can tell two things right away. The person living here is sick and is living in a state of chaos. This is shown with the endless tissues and later when he coughs.
Tumblr media
In the following sequence, we can immediately tell he is desperate for attention. So much that he has convinced himself (and tried to convince Claire) that the world revolves around him.
He thinks Claire is hiding his cigarettes because she worries too much; he rambles about her and "the people on television," being obsessed with him. And his song is the icing on the cake.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Within the first two frames, it is revealed that he wants to leave his dying body to be elevated. He is trapped, and his anchor, Claire, is there to serve him his death. (In his mind)
And his ticket out? His cigarettes. And the world of television is his idea of heaven.
Tumblr media
(The many eyes represent, as said by wiki: subhuman, divine omniscience, or a gateway to the soul. Or, in this case, the grandfather wants to be beyond this world. And the song itself is his soul's desires.)
Tumblr media
As revealed earlier, he thinks it's evil to hide his cigarettes ("help") because she is prolonging his hell on earth. He wants to be somewhere where it's "easier to breathe" (to live).
Tumblr media
Like Mirror Man does with his reflections, and Claire with her sign, his ideal world is where he is seen as important and likable. He wants his very soul to be desirable; to be fought over by those who are valuable to society.
Tumblr media
He rempathizes that he "wants a smoke" when he is surrounded by what he thinks are beautiful women; they're the pinnacle of what he wants: to be admired and loved, and to be seen as so significant that others echo what he says.
The next frame further proves these concepts. His lungs, as seen emerging from many broken televisions, are his key to reaching his heaven. They surround him like angel's wings.
The women cheer him on, as if luring him like sirens to his death.
Tumblr media
Finally, when the song ends, he is convinced that Claire is someone else. While his smell might be off, I think this further reveals how disconnected he is to reality.
Tumblr media
He can’t recognize his own granddaughter, the only person he spends time with on a regular basis. He has become beyond detached. There is no helping him now.
