love these... never knew what to call these necklaces but the best bet is searching ‘magnifying’ ‘spyglass’ or ‘monocle’ pendants
you can even find some made (or make your own) out of old trial lenses used by optometrists

Did I mention the time I sat opposite Richard Barbieri in an Opthalmologist waiting room whilst reading an article on Porcupine tree in prog magazine?
This happened like half a year ago and I've been meaning to say this to my prog friends...

According to Dr. Eduardo Valdes-Hevia, a well-known physician of the bizarre and unusual, Crystalline Conjunctival Hypertrophy is a rare symptom of heavy metal buildups in the blood, most commonly of cadmium. Small deposits of the metal in the conjunctiva eventually grow into relapsing structures that may protrude out of the eye, such as this advanced case.”

I need everyone to realize there is a difference between an Optometrist and Opthalmologist.
Optometrist: The person who can give you glasses and non-prescription eye drops. They are really just a glasses person. They have less equipment and less knowledge of actual MEDICAL THINGS than an opthalmologist.
Opthalmologist: Literal Medical Doctor of the Eye. Does the glasses stuff, but has more equipment, knows more about diseases and conditions involving sight. Can write prescriptions for things other than glasses.
These two "eye doctors" not the same. So when someone recommends you see an Opthalmologist, do NOT see an Optometrist!
An no, an optometrist will not always recommend you to see an opthalmologist because although they both have jobs involving the eyes, they are not the same jobs and aren't taught the same things so they don't look for the same stuff.

Maybe I'm easily amused. But, I am now better prepared for another freaking infusion of endoscopy's special Migraine Potion in the morning!
(Another unfortunate effect of not actually having prescription glasses I can reasonably wear right now: the clip-on shades are sorta useless! 😑)
There is also another dilated eye exam coming up in a couple of weeks, so yeah. I'm already extra photosensitive after the laser treatments and lens replacement, which can be fun when you're already prone to migraines set off by light. (And seizure activity, but thankfully that hasn't been a problem in years. *fingers crossed*)
I am strongly considering trying some kind of rose-tinted lenses for regular wear, whenever I do find out the best option to get my vision corrected again. But, better in general to just go ahead and pick up some cheap interim nonprescription sunglasses!
These particular roughly $30 Oakley knockoffs were also supposed to come with plain grey polarized lenses to swap in. Which is what I was intending to use for this. But, open up the case and it actually contains a second mirrored set. 🙄 Of course, I only saw that once he had them home from the store this evening, and it was already too late to run back and swap them. They are going back, but not tonight.
So yeah, I guess it's the full-on rainbow Human Fly look tomorrow. 🪰 Infinitely better than no eye protection after I get out.
Not exactly my style to begin with, but wraparound sports shades did seem like a very practical choice if your goal is blocking glare. And they turned out to be surprisingly comfy, no more than they've been on my face so far.

I just hope teachers of south east asian regions become more empathetic and kind hearted towards their students. Specially in med school. I mean, okay, not every course is everyone's cup of tea and there's no end of learning. You can always learn new and old things. There's always a chance to recapitulate.
I feel so dumb and idiot after today's opthalmology class. I don't know what to say.. Humiliation in front of the whole class is something...How to put that. Maybe something that asian teachers need not do and improve themselves in this part ig. Im just feeling sad and wayy devastated. Almost in tears. Ik i need to put more efforts. Of course that's my fault though.

why icl surgery is important than Lasik?
ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens) and LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) are both popular surgical procedures used to correct refractive errors in vision, such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism. However, they differ in the way they work and the suitability for different patients.
ICL involves implanting a tiny artificial lens inside the eye to correct the refractive error. The lens is inserted behind the iris and in front of the eye's natural lens, where it stays permanently. This procedure is suitable for people with severe myopia, thin corneas, and dry eyes.
LASIK, on the other hand, involves reshaping the cornea using a laser to correct the refractive error. The surgeon uses a laser to create a thin flap in the cornea, lifts the flap, and then reshapes the underlying cornea with another laser. The flap is then replaced, and the cornea heals naturally. LASIK is suitable for people with mild to moderate refractive errors and healthy corneas.
In terms of recovery time, LASIK generally has a faster recovery time than ICL, with most patients returning to their normal activities within a few days. ICL typically has a longer recovery time, with patients needing to avoid strenuous activities for a few weeks.
Both ICL and LASIK are safe and effective procedures, and the choice between them depends on the individual's specific needs and circumstances. It is best to consult with an ophthalmologist to determine which procedure is right for you.

All About The Human Eye!
The eye is our most complex sensory organ. It consists of versatile structures such as the lens and iris that allow regulated amounts of light from varying distances to be focused on the retina – which converts the light into signals that are sent to the brain to be processed.
Tumblr media
The main parts of the human eye represented on a cross-section illustrated transversally.
Tumblr media
The cells of the retina, divided into 3 primary layers (from innermost to outermost):
Photoreceptor cell layer (rods and cones)
Bipolar cell layer (bipolar and horizontal cells)
Ganglion cell layer (ganglion and amacrine cells)
In the retina, there are 1.2 million ganglion cells, 6 million cones, and 120 rods spread across 10 layers of cells and 6 unique cell lines that work to convert light energy into electrical signals. These signals are gathered from all the cells and transmitted to the visual cortex inside the brain's occipital lobe via the optic nerve.
Tumblr media
Light that enters our eyes from the left side of our visual field is processed in the right hemisphere of the brain while the light that enters our eyes from the right side of our visual field is processed in the brain's left hemisphere. This 'crisscrossing of visual fields', which takes place at the optic chiasma, results in a flipped image – which the brain automatically corrects.

Human Eye Pigments and also a tangent on Oil Droplets Found in Photoreceptor Cells In Birds' Eyes
ok so. pigments in the iris of the human eye!! Lipochrome is also called lipofuschin and its a carotenoid pigment!!
Tumblr media
This infographic does not have grey eyes but grey eyes are basically due to irises that have very little melanin and have more coarse collagen in the stroma of the iris and this causes the light to reflect in a way that makes the iris appear grey
Tumblr media
This image explains what colors get scattered by the stroma and the resultant eye color.
Now about the birds..
I also remembered that birds have some carotenoid pigments in their eyes. Those are in the form of oil droplets too in some birds (they apparently have the same visual pigments as humans which are rhodopsins - which is formed after vitamin A or retinol undergoes a cycle known as Wald's visual cycle).
Tumblr media
And this image above shows where the oil droplet is present in the cone cell(cone cells are responsible for color vision and daytime vision). These oil droplets are also found in rod cells occasionally(rod cells are for night vision/low light and black and white vision) but not as often, so these oil droplets play more of a role in diurnal species.
So they have visual pigments but in addition to that, some birds eyes have oil droplets containing carotenoid pigments in front of cone cells that act as spectral filters, like spherical microlenses, and help channel light. These oil droplets are also found in some reptiles, fish, and amphibians, and were actually first studied in turtles!
(links for further reading below!)
This one is a research article from 2014, its open access so not behind a paywall.
This is a science news article from Purdue about a type of retinal structure that contains megamitochondria(a structure producing energy) and oil droplets (MMOD or megamitochondria-oil droplet complex) that was discovered in flycatchers(a type of passerine, or songbird) in 2019.
This study was done on new world flycatchers (various species of the Empidonax genus, specifically). A flycatcher is a 'sit-and-wait' predator of insects(what says on the tin- the bird waits on a branch and catches insects when it sees them) and this eye structure enables precise visual tracking. And below is the link to the study itself which is also open access.
