The thing that I really do love about No Children is that it represents such a turning point. Like, if you're interpreting Tallahassee as a linear progression of events, I do think that that song is the moment when our heroes go from attempting to salvage a wreck to just embracing the wreckage.

In all of the songs previously, there's at least an element of optimism. They are fixing up their house. They are buying each other lavish gifts. Yes they're sitting in the living room drinking all day, but 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨'𝘴 𝘨𝘰𝘯𝘯𝘢 𝘣𝘦 𝘰𝘬𝘢𝘺 𝘴𝘰𝘰𝘯. Of course there's all this foreshadowing that everything will go up in flames at the end, but the Alpha Couple don't accept that.

And then No Children happens, and that slight ray of hopefulness is gone from all the subsequent tracks. They get a lot more reflective, but it's presented like they're looking back at their odd, ill-fated version of glory days. There's no more trying to keep our spirits high. There's only the damage we've done, and the worse things that we'll do.

#to be clear I don't think that they stop loving each other in No Children #because love is mentioned more and more in the latter half of the album #just that it represents the loss of all hope #all this to say that I really love this album & I'm glad it exists #my ramblings #the mountain goats #no children

Against all odds, asexual Buckeye and reduced-fertility-gene Magic Man have managed to make a baby! However, because Buckeye is Animakin, she needs to plant the baby in soil... And there is no soil in the ocular forest where Monster's Basin is. Only red sand and red dirt and other nasty red stuff, which apparently doesn't count.

So, we have unexpectedly had to up and move in order to give this new baby the best possible chance of survival! We were hoping to be able to prepare a bit more first, but desperate times call for desperate measures. We'll leave everything behind for the sake of one of our own if we must.

However, moving means it's time for another (rather rushed, I'm afraid) colony tour! Presenting: Monster's Basin!!

Here's the whole thing from above. If I had to describe it in one word, I would say "red".

Here is the central room, the kitchen/dining/ritual room. Next to it, we have two bathrooms and our freezer. Magic Man is already packing some of our human leather kneel sheets, as you can see.

Some bedrooms: Top left is Vasso and Laursen's room, top right is Euclid and Socks' room, bottom left is Dire Wolf and Pro (and formerly Bella's) room, and bottom left is Magic Man, Buckeye, and Dopey the razorjack's bedroom.

We also have a small, utilitarian hospital.

Up above the bedrooms and the main room are our dinosaur museum (we can't go without a dinosaur museum) and our research laboratory. Also a better view of the freezer.

Our farms and a huge stack of red bricks that we'll never get to use.

Here's a nutrient-paste barn that we got from a prefab some traders sold us. Mostly so we could see what it was, but our animals seemed to appreciate it.

Bella's room that she was given when she grew up into an adult, the sauna, and Blackdragon, Duchess, and Night Stalker's room.

The wardrobe, the chemfuel room, the miscellaneous devices room, the hot spring, and the small place where we attempted to plant Buckeye's sapling child before we realised it didn't work in this biome.

Finally, our animal pen/archery range. We were very fond of the moose named All-Powerful (she fell out of the sky), but we'll probably release her into the wild (along with a self-tamed hare and three baby wolfchickens some traders gave us) to help us conserve food on our abrupt journey.

And that concludes the tour of Monster's Basin! I wonder where our caravan will take us. Hopefully, somewhere with plenty of fertile soil for a growing sapling child...

Which do you prefer, Super Sentai or Kamen Rider?

that can...really depend on what the current series are. :') but I think overall I'm more into Rider! Sentai tends to be more consistent quality-wise, but Rider has much more variety in terms of narrative structure and what it tries to do, if that makes sense. not necessarily in terms of theme, but in, like, story beats and pacing and character arcs and things like that. it doesn't always hit (and when it's bad, it's...pretty bad) (stares straight off into middle distance) but usually it's at least making an earnest attempt at doing something interesting. and when it does hit, it hits.

they are both very close to my heart though! :> plus Sentai's been doing some serious shakeups to the formula with Donbros and Kingohger, which I'm very very into. lately it seems like they've been messing around with some of the foundational stuff of both franchises in an interesting way, and I'm excited to see where they go with them!

#children's shows are serious business #there have been several riders where i wasn't a fan of the execution but i did get what it was trying to do and i appreciate that at least #it is a bit ironic because i discovered sentai first and initially had zero interest in rider #(someone who had seen a shin movie and thought all kamen rider was Like That had warned me that it was very much not my thing) #however fate intervened #through a series of contrived circumstances i watched a midseries episode of den-o completely out of context and was like. i must know more #den-o is a particularly insane one to watch a midseries episode of with zero context and frankly i'm glad it happened that way

I adore how Tatsuya Endo writes his characters, especially the women. They can be warm, soft, cute, cool, tough, scary... all, if not most, of his ladies in Spy x Family are equally wonderful in their own way, both in character design and personality.

I forgot that Tara the thunderbeast has Thor-powers, and she managed to single-handedly send the pigskin bandits fleeing for their lives.

Not before they'd got a few hits in, though, and on the way back home...

... Vasso had a cut on his leg that got infected. By the time we got back to Monster's Basin, the infection was at 98%, and his immunity was only at 72%. So, sadly...

... He matches Socks now. I suppose you could say they're "all right", but you wouldn't because that would be in poor taste.

Then we got some Mechanoids causing trouble, and considering M.M. and Tara did such a good job with the pigskins, we sent them to deal with it alongside Poison the bionic thrumbo and Buckeye with her newly-unlocked psycaster abilities.

An eventful trip that ended in no more toxic fallout and also a new relationship in the cult! Hooray!
