We’re heading to the valley for our nephew’s first birthday party. It’s at 1pm and so of course MIL called at 9am to ask if we were on the road yet. E was like “No? The party is at 1?” She was under the impression we were stopping by the house first to visit. Ha! Nope. If you want us to come by, invite us like people who were raised with manners.

I’m still convinced this is all part of some unspoken expectation that we will clear our schedules and jump in. And if Niece asked us to help and we could swing it without ruining our own schedules maybe! But my days of killing myself to curry favor with ingrates and people who don’t seem to like me are over.

Besides… since when are great aunts and uncles supposed to help plan this stuff? Isn’t my job to have hard candies in my purse and talk about the war?

no, i'm kidding. i actually did that exact idea with my last fandom ship, where only A could see B and realized she was a ghost but fell in love with her anyway. it's a good concept but a little too depressing for me, and ultimately the source of the angst doesn't change. (they can't be together.) there's not much else you can do with it beyond the mental torment. besides, i like angst with a happy ending, even if it takes a while to get there, not angst for angst's sake. having no payoff sucks. that's why my motto is "death belongs in the au endings"; if i want to explore character death(s) and the consequences, which i have done before, it'll always be an au take on an otherwise happy canon ending.

the funniest meltdown ive ever had was in college when i got so overstimulated that i could Not speak, including over text. one of my friends was trying to talk me through it but i was solely using emojis because they were easier than trying to come up with words so he started using primarily emojis as well just to make things feel balanced. this was not the Most effective strategy... until. he tried to ask me "you okay?" but the way he chose to do that was by sending "👉🏼👌🏼❓" and i was so shocked by suddenly being asked if i was dtf that i was like WHAT????
