FAQ Page

I'm not quite done with this, but it'll be nice for later.

Is it okay if I take inspiration from your art and concepts? I've been in a situation in recent years where another artist has taken far, far too much. You've probably seen me talk about it. It's a subject I'm pretty burnt out on. I recently saw another artist's take on this and it seemed sensible to me. I'm just going to quote theirs. I have tried to find my own words, but right now I find myself more comfortable using someone else's. "Well, if you’re having to ask me for permission, either your design is too similar or you’re being overly nervous about a normal artistic process. You’re absolutely free to use my work as a source of inspiration but I’d strongly encourage you to think about the details from my design you like most, and remix them with other concepts into your own unique take."

Taking inspiration is something everyone does, but please don't become a shadow I get bi-weekly alerts about. Ideally your pool of inspiration will be many artists and concepts re-imagined into something unique to you- and that you're being honest with yourself about the result.

Your art is being copied! / Will you tell me who the copy cat is? I know your intentions are in the right place, and I appreciate that, but I get a lot of messages about this and am tired. I'm sure if my art ends up somewhere it shouldn't be or there's a significant event, the community will get it to me through people I know, but let me rest. I'm just sayin' get a second or third opinion before coming to my inbox.

I sent you a message and you didn't respond. Sorry about that. I tend not to stress about messages because it can be a drain. You're more likely to get a response if you let me know from the get go what you want, but nothing is guaranteed. Sometimes I didn't see it, sometimes I got busy or forgot, sometimes I plan to do it later, sometimes I just opted out. It's not personal.

Are you okay with fanart? What about OC interactions? Can I post it? Sure, just don't profit off of it and please credit me. If you want to draw my OCs interacting with yours that's also fine- though I prefer situations where their actions make sense. Alf wouldn't make your character cry for fun, for example. He's grumpy but not cruel. Posting it is fine. Where do you Rp? Are you looking for more partners? Discord mostly. Roleplay consumes a lot of time so these days I mostly only play with my buddy Thema. I probably wouldn't have time to play, but I like to hang around people that do and I don't mind being asked. Just please don't be sad if I never get around to responding! I'm most compatible with people who are comfortable with radio silence.

Can I use your characters in roleplay/as roleplay refs? Considering I actively roleplay my OCs and there's a potential for confusion, I'd rather you didn't. Though I think there's a difference between linking to my art and saying 'this is my character', and linking to it to say 'this has the mood I'm going for, but here's what's different about my character--'. The latter is fine.

Can I make Fan OCs for your setting? Thinking about this makes me tired. Maybe I'll get to a point where I'm more comfortable later, but for now I'd rather you didn't make something directly from my worlds. But lets be real, you don't need my permission to draw cat monsters and I take a huge amount of inspiration from ancient history. Many of my concepts are inspired by things that you can read about and be inspired too. If you see something and are curious if there's a historical source, just ask. Hopefully I'll remember.

Can I repost your work? I don't mind as long as I'm credited. Most of my art has a signature on it already. If it doesn't, please add a link or my name so people can find me. I'm less okay with my work being used as a pageviews grab on a site where I have an active social media presence, but it's probably not worth my time to care.

Do I have permission to draw NSFW art of your characters? No, for a plethora of reasons, some easy to explain and some not, but I probably can't stop you. Just don't profit off of it or show it to me.

Do you have a website for your OCs? I have RP pages for them scattered all over the place and many of them are outdated, but as I type this I recently put some up on Toyhouse. https://toyhou.se/GreekCeltic

Do you have a website for your comic? Sure do. It's an expensive fuck. https://catswaycomic.com/ When does your comic update? Sporadically. I work on it when I have time. My income is solely freelance commissions and Patreon- mostly commissions.

There's other places you could post your comic! Yeah, I know. I may do that someday, but for now I like having my own house, even if it's an expensive fuck. (Not really, the renewal just hits around tax time, Lol).

Gorgeous Company - DJ (idol) Johnny Suh x Shy Fem Reader

A/N: is it just me or May was a very long yet rollercoaster of emotions month? But anyways, there was already a spoiler that Johnny would be a DJ for a club here in my country, I just instantly thought of this fic and ofc, me being me, I had just to write something about it

Warnings: sexual comment, sexual theme, near sexual assault, pet name (kitten)

[02:09 am] - were you nervous and anxious about going to a club for the first time in your whole life which was both exciting yet nerve-wrecking. Honestly, if it wasn’t because of Johnny being the DJ and your other nctzen friends going, you would most definitely not want to go to a club. Ever.

Because you can’t seem to obvious that you were going to a club, you decided to just wear a slightly cropped grey top with long wide black pants. You took your “sleeping-over” back and bid goodbye to your parents as you went over to your friend's house to drop over your bag and pick them up.

After picking your friend up, the two of you drove off to the club. Arriving at the club, you and your friend were both amazed at how big the place was. After parking, you and your friend showed the security your IDs and ticket entry before being allowed into the club.

Inside the club, you were more than amazed that you were actually there. Being taught to be reserved ever since you were young definitely shielded you from lots of bad things out there. But because of your curious nature, you have always wondered what it would be like to just go out and have fun. To just enjoy life and explore.

You and your friend took several pictures before making your way to the dance floor. Luckily enough, you and your friend managed to get quite close to the stage. Meaning that you would be able to see Johnny up close.

Exactly at midnight, the event started and everyone started to gather around at the dance floor. For the first hour, it was someone else that opened the event and while your friend seemed to enjoy it so much, you were still nervous but tried to enjoy along. Surprisingly, 1 hour passed quickly and the announcer announced Johnny as the DJ which made the entire crowd shout with excitement.

Johnny thanked the announcer and went over to the DJ station and opened his session with a remix of Kick It, the song that introduced you to the NCT and K-pop world. Seeing Johnny up close and with the remix of the first NCT song you’ve heard really brought back memories of how you managed to find NCT during a tough time in your life.

Maybe it was because of the atmosphere or the song remix that Johnny did but you started to enjoy your time and the whole event. You started to slowly dance to the rhythm of the song which once again caught Johnny’s attention.

Johnny was just glancing at the crowd, making sure that everyone was having a good time when he caught you starting to dance which brought a smile to his face. Maybe it was because he first saw you originally being shy and awkward but when you started to enjoy yourself, pride slowly washed over Johnny as he felt happy that he could make even those shy and awkward ones actually enjoy themselves even if he didn’t do it through talking.

Unfortunately, Johnny’s time was almost up and he ended things on a lighter note by playing Regular. After the song ended, Johnny took the mic and thanked everyone, especially his fans for coming all the way to the club to support him.

“I know that not everyone here might be a club person nor have ever been out this late at night which is why I want to personally thank you all, especially my fans who came all the way here, this late at night and probably had to sneak behind your parents. It was a pleasure to be able to DJ for you tonight and see you all have fun. Stay safe everyone and good night!” Johnny stated, waving to the crowd and bowing before he headed back. Not forgetting to eye your figure as he left

Once Johnny left the stage, the announcer continued to announce other DJs that would continue the event. You asked your friend if they wanted to head back now which they were more than alright with it but they mentioned that they had to go to the bathroom real quick which you nodded and told them that you would wait for them at the corner of the bar because it was the most secluded, quiet area of the club.

As you were waiting for your friend, you scrolled through your phone and find some of pictures and videos during Johnny’s DJ session and can’t help but smile at the recent memory of meeting your bias and enjoying his DJ session and seeing him upclose.

“It was well worth the lie” you chuckled at your rebel behaviour for “lying” to your parents

“Damn. Didn’t think you were one to go to a club. But oh well, makes my heart flutter that you’re here. Even in that more modest clothing” your slightly crazy high school guy friend stated

Before you could even complained or fight back, the guy pushed you to the far corner, away from where most of the crowd and everyone’s sight. Tears were starting to build up in your eyes as you felt that this was your punishment for lying to your parents. But when you nearly felt the guy’s hand near your private area, the hand was immediately gone and suddenly, there was a tall figure in between you and the guy.

“What the fuck do you think you’re doing?! Don’t fucking tell me that you were going to touch her without her consent or worse, trying to rape her?! I don’t fucking think so” the soft lighthearted voice of Johnny turned into a strict dominated growl as he gripped the guy’s hand, nearly crushing it as you heard a bone crack

Seeing the guy in pain, you softly yanked Johnny’s shirt, just hard enough so that he would look back at you. Noticing your worried gaze, Johnny understood what you were implying and pushed the guy back until he stumbled to stand his ground. “Say a word out there and your broken hand would be the least of your problem” Johnny threatened. “Now scram” Johnny growled as the guy stumbles to leave the club

“T-thank you. For helping me. I, I thought you’ve left already” you stuttered, fiddling with your fingers

“Did he touch you at all? I can help you sue him if he did” Johnny stated, his voice was firm

“W-what?! N-no. He almost did but you came and helped me first. Don’t go after him. It’s not worth your time or energy” you replied

“You’re a fan, right? I saw you looking a bit awkward so I just assumed…” Johnny replied, his voice much softer compared to before

“Y-yeah. I am. Y-you’re actually my first and ultimate bias” you stated shyly, Johnny’s inner self was shrieking when knowing this information

“Fuck. I’m sorry that you had to see my angry self. I didn’t mean to. I hope that you’re not traumatised by it” Johnny apologised

“It was a bit scary but I know that you were helping me so I’m grateful for it. Really” you replied, slightly bowing, making Johnny smile

“You sure you’re alright, right? Also, is this your first time going to a club?” Johnny asked, leaning by the wall, hoping that his tall figure is covering you from the crowd so no one can see the two of you

“Yeah. I’m good. Still a bit shaken up but better now. And yea, it’s actually my first time. My friend accompanied me even though she’s not a fan but yeah, I came here because I wanted to support you. It’s one of your first times actually being a DJ in front of your fans, right?” you replied back, now Johnny knows that his little heart is warming up

“Yeah. It’s my first. Thank you. For coming all the way here to support me even though you might seem anxious and uncomfortable. I really appreciate it” Johnny mentioned, giving you his sweetest smile

“Oh, please, I should be the one appreciating you coming all the way to our country and being the DJ. I also actually somewhat lied to my parents about coming tonight” you admitted, slightly chuckling

“Oooh, you sneaky little one. Well, I have a sneaky information that would make everyone go nuts but I’ll just let you know since I feel that I can trust you. I can trust you, right?” Johnny asked, his gaze showcasing his more dominating aura, making you nod shyly

“Good” Johnny smiled. “Do you have a pen and paper with you?” Johnny asked again and you immediately rummaged in your bag and pulled out your little pocket notebook and pen

“Is this a sticker of us?” Johnny asked, amazed at the size difference between your pocket notebook and his hand while you just nodded. “Cute” Johnny complimented, leaning closer, making your face heat up. “My members are actually here, back in the VIP room. I’ll be back. I’m going to ask them for their sign, alright?” Johnny stated, leaving your stunned self

Leaving for a good 5 minutes, Johnny came back and gave you back your little notebook and pen whilst giving you his soft smile. “Here you go”. You took the notebook and were about to take a peek when Johnny stopped you. “Why don’t you look at it when you get home. I have a personal message for you” Johnny uttered, his bigger hands on top of yours, preventing you from opening the notebook

“Oh? You didn’t have to but sure, I’ll see it when I get back. Which reminds me. My friend just texted me that she’s waiting near the exit” you replied, keeping your pocket notebook

“Right this way then. There’s a backdoor exit that you can use to avoid any unwanted situations since I wouldn’t be able to help you much if you head out” Johnny insisted, directing you towards the backdoor exit that was exclusive for staff and VIP guests

“Here you are. You got everything you need?” Johnny asked as you slowly nodded. “Great. Take care of yourself, alright?” Johnny mentioned

“I will. And Johnny, is it alright to do one more thing?” you contemplated but asked anyways

“As long as it doesn’t involve anything illegal, sure” Johnny replied, anticipating what you were going to ask him but was caught off-guard when you suddenly went on your tip-toe and pecked his cheek whilst holding onto his bicep. “Thank you for today” you thanked Johnny, about to leave when he held you back

Everything happened both in fast and slow motion. Right after you pecked Johnny, you were ready to just leave but Johnny’s reflexes were quicker than your legs could take you. Johnny gently pulled you back and trapped you between his tall figure and the door.

“You really are a sneaky little kitty, aren’t you? Acting all innocent but you’re even more sly than a fox” Johnny commented, holding your chin between his fingers as he made you look up at him, making you feel small and nervous as he looked at you with that dark gaze

Worried that you pushed your luck too much tonight, you kept still and awaited his next words or move. As Johnny leaned closer to your face, you felt your whole body heat up and right when you feel his breath by your neck, you just called out to Johnny’s name which sounded almost like a moan.

Closing your eyes, you could feel Johnny’s thumb caressing the bottom part of your lip as he leaned even closer. But suddenly, you felt a soft wet stain on top of your forehead and when you opened your eyes, you saw Johnny kissing your forehead. Right then and there, your legs nearly give out if it weren’t for Johnny quickly grabbing you and holding you up.

“Looks like I also caught you off guard, didn’t I?” Johnny chuckled, holding you in his arms but slowly let you go once he was sure you could stand on your own. “You should go now. Your friend must be waiting long” Johnny stated, slowly letting you go

“D-did you just??” you questioned, still shocked from what just happened

“How about you just hit me up when you get home? Take care alright?” Johnny mentioned, winking at you as you left the club, still stunned

When you met up with your friend, they questioned where have you been, you told them that you met with another friend of yours who was a fan of Johnny as well. Without questioning you further, you and your friend headed back to your staying place.

Arriving back, you showered first whilst your friend waited for you. Once you were done, you changed as your friend went into the shower. As you dried your hair, your thoughts went back to Johnny’s words back in the club. How he told you to just open your notebook at home and to text him when you’ve gone back.

Taking out your pocket notebook, you started to peek through what kind of message did Johnny write. What amazed you was that Johnny was being honest about his members being at the club because every single of the other 127 members sign your notebook but once you got to Johnny’s signature, you noticed his long note right next to it.

“I know that we’ve only just met and that you might think that you’re just a fan but I must say that you caught my attention from the moment I stepped onto the stage. I was a bit worried that you wouldn’t enjoy yourself but am glad that you eventually did. I know that what happened was probably not the way you wanted to meet me but I’m partially glad that we met because you’re a genuinely sweet person. Since I’ll be in town for a bit. Hit me up if you’d like to meet again since having you as my gorgeous company whilst being here would make me ecstatic. Text me 0XX-XXXXXXX” - with love, Johnny Suh

Feeling your cheeks burn as you read his message, you hesitantly took your phone and tried to text his number which turned into a long chat throughout the night while your friend passed out and became the beginning of something more between the two of you.

A/N: gosh, I really want to see DJ Johnny, especially after seeing his talk with Eric Nam makes me want to go and support him but I'm not even sure if I would be able to get the tickets also will most probably have to sneak behind my parents if I do end up getting the tickets. We'll see. Cause I'm like so sure that the fans are going are mainly Johnfams and they're are all gorgeous, smart, independent alpha boss lady whereas I'm just a lost potato :') ahahaha, hope you enjoyed this fanfic and see you in the next one xoxo Vinet

Alright new AU idea.

I deadass thought of this immediately after watching the TADC pilot.

I don’t have a name for this AU but it’s an alternate timeline at the end of Deltarune chapter 7 where Kris and Susie are in TADC in which I’m definitely not making this on Scratch or anything…

It’s kinda why I made this image:

(Also Kris and Pomni will be separate people in this AU)

TL;DR:

No more dark worlds, Asriel came back from college, but through them though Kris managed to make a friend, Susie. And even after finally getting rid of the SOUL, Kris and Susie continue to be friends. One day, they are hanging out at Kris’s house and finding weird things under their bed while Asriel is studying. Kris and Susie find two old headsets and decide to put them on, and I think you know what happens next…

MAIN STORY:

End of Deltarune chapter 7

After the day is saved permanently. Kris and Susie return to the light world.

(I do think something big would happen in chapter 7, but being a fan of Toby Fox, I think the last light world scene, if there is one, will just be normal with a slight twist)

Asriel has came home from University and just as Kris is about to walk home

*Bright lights shine from the inside

Susie: …well. Guess I should go now.. Erm, have fun with your brother I guess.

*Leave Susie?

Yes ❤️ No!!!

[Upon choosing “Yes”]

[Kris jumps high into the air like a fuckin cat and starts going gremlin mode under Asriel’s bed]

[Kris and Susie dig out two video game controllers, one knock off one and a normal one, I-CEE’s coupons (I hope I spelt that right but I’m too lazy to search it up), magazines, a Yoshi plushie, etc, but then, they find something unexpected]

[Susie and Kris slowly pick up two dusty headsets,, they seem to have already turned on]

(“The Door” plays)

[The lights get brighter, the surroundings get darker]

Susie: Geez Kris. Didn’t know you and your bro had VR.

Kris: we don’t-

Susie: I only seen these things on TV. Let’s try them out!

Kris: Yeah sure!

[If you chose not to remove Susie from your party earlier]

Susie: Your mom let me in.

Susie: I kinda want to do this friend thing more with you.

Kris: Hehe, same here…

randomised trope/tag grading game

clearly today is a day of doing memes (i posted a list of 9 favourite books earlier today). i know it's a tuesday and normal people are at work, but i'm writing some posts, hello!

Rules: Generate your own personal list of 10 AO3 tags to rate. i was tagged in a very similar post by @bookish-bogwitch a few weeks ago. at the time i read her post, i felt like our opinions were so aligned that there wasn't a good reason for me to write my own post. (well done, great opinions!) the only exception really is that if a snowbaz fic was tagged age gap i might choose to read it - less because the trope is for me, and more because that's kind of weird for snowbaz. so, maybe it would be interesting! and i guess i feel pretty meh about H/C, sorry folks.

anyway - i decided to tweak the meme into the form that you see in this post. here's my 10 random things and what i think about them👇

Amusement Parks: -2

harsh judgement right out of the gate. i've read some good ones but i feel like generally a fic about an amusement park is likely to be some quite gentle fluff, maybe a modern AU, and that's not my favourite.

Unconventional Families: 0

maybe all slash fics that are kidfics are unconventional families? if so - i actually quite like kidfic, a not that secret shame, but i sort of like it less if the fact that they're gay parents is now worth flagging because it makes life difficult - since i am a gay parent. and i dont want to read about how it will be hard. so it averages out to a 0. if the family is more unconventional.... who knows? i would neither click nor not click.

Rough Sex: 8

how sad for me that this is my first clear yes and highest rated. i probably would click unless other tags or the summary put me off.

Public Transportation: 3

i went with a yes here, as i'm intrigued. it's oddly specific and suggests an interest in the specifics, and i am a fan of public transport. i've read some nice fics where snowbaz meet on trains (yes, often modern AU, but i dont dislike them all), like the classic 15-across by @ninemagicks and the equally classic remix 2-Down (A 15-Across remix) by @carryonvisinata (who also wrote a theme park story i like, so the -2 is definitely feeling mean. ah well, press on.) Bickering: 7

i mean - i prefer banter, but i assume if someone has written bickering they kind of mean banter. unless it's like sibling bickering and then maybe not.

Phone Calls & Telephones: 0

this is almost text fic (which i like less than most people like it) but not. i often write in a phonecall, it's part of what i think of as the friendship to lovers arc...... idk. i'm also going to add here that i keep thinking about plots that rely on people not being able to call each other, which is kind of the opposite. or you have to get to a pay phone - i dont know that i would want to read a fic like that, but there are some fun movies and books that you'd have to rework now. most recently i was watching madonna in 'desperately seeking susan'.

Redeemed (character): 7

this really depends on who they are, obviously. i can imagine it being really annoying if they never show any redeemability, but i've given it a strong 7 because i come from a world of redeeming the master from doctor who over and over again, so it would feel silly not to have it as a yes. and i kind of want to redeem the mage....... but it would be weird if he just was redeemed in a fic, and so too the master. it would have to be kind of about it.

Quests: 7

yes. not a 10/10 insta-click , because i can imagine it going on a bit too long if it was a fic about a quest rather than, say, two people realising they loved each other, but i would like it to be in the background. snowbaz has some good quest fics. Song of Sirens (rated E) by @scone-lover is such a fic or A Gift From the Propheseals (rated M) by @skeedelvee and @letraspal another.

Cats: 3

this feels mean, i have 3 cats myself - i like cats to be in a fic because cats are nice, but i also dont have many feelings about animal transformation and if snowbaz adopt a cat in the future... that's fine by me, i hope they do, but i probably don't want to read about it for more than a few lines.

Sociopathy: 2

probably not if it's a serious examination of this, but plenty of my villainous favs could be described as sociopaths, so... i give it a 2!

Mixing business with pleasure (Explicit, Malec, Shadowhunters)

Alec has to go to the Seelie Queen herself and strike a deal, release Jace from the curse in exchange of… what, exactly? He has nothing to offer. Magnus Bane is the warlock who grants wishes. His father is a Prince of Hell after all, the demon of lust… maybe Alec has something to offer then.

Yeah this fic took off alright, I really liked the concept ♥

Eyes on Fire (Teen, Sterek, Teen Wolf)

When a rival pack goes after Scott and his friends, Stiles finds himself caught in the crossfire. With his subsequent turning to haunt him among other nightmares, Stiles has to learn how to control his new abilities and make something of a situation he never wanted for himself, much less with the tensions that linger in Beacon Hills since the awakening of the Nemeton. As he eventually figures out how to be a werewolf, he finally finds common ground with one Derek Hale, catching feelings as he goes. The unexpected alliance might be just what Beacon Hills needs to bring the established werewolf packs together once and for all.

This was my first reverse bang and I finally tried my hand at werewolf!Stiles, I had a lot of fun coming up with the fic to match the art.

Deepest Desires (give in) (General, Malec, Shadowhunters)

Were-cats are good luck by shadowhunters' standards, so when a black, jewelry covered cat appears at the Institute, Alec pays him his respects. He needs it, considering the messes Clary and Jace keep dragging him in. Alec certainly doesn't expect the were-cat to take a liking to him, and even less to start flirting with him...

A piece of night sky (Teen, Malec, Shadowhunters)

Alec is doing his best to keep the city safe. With no support from the Clave, the New York Institute is desperately understaffed. He begins patrolling with help from the Downworld factions - which proves to be tricky at best, and becomes almost impossible when the werewolves start hunting Alec. His siblings have no idea of what he’s up to at night and to keep them all safe Alec needs to keep it that way. Then, he meets the High Warlock of Brooklyn. Suddenly, patrolling also includes pop songs and bird puns in between watching someone's back when fighting demons. But, what’s one more secret to keep?

This was my first collab with a beta and an artist for a bang, I’m exceptionally proud of this one!

(Vir)Gin and Tonic (Mature, Malec, Shadowhunters)

Alec and Magnus have barely met when the High Warlock asks for virgin shadowhunter energy in exchange for Clary’s memories. Naturally, Jace offers Alec’s virginity. It doesn’t go according to plan.

The first fic in this list is actually a remix of this one with a slightly different take on virginity x)

4. Do you respond to comments, why or why not?

Yes, always! I just love interacting with other fans, it’s nice to know someone actually read your fic and noticed details or reacted to some choices you made in the narrative. Also it can be a great way to find new ideas and motivation, I wish I could be more invested in writing communities to keep those creative juices flowing.

5. What fic has the angstiest ending?

I’d say Dangerous Tastes (Explicit, Yalex, Alex Rider), it’s a bit of a star-crossed lovers romance and the ending is particularly bittersweet, albeit hopeful.

After a failed assassination attempt during his horse ride around the property, Alex gets a bodyguard against his will. He keeps flirting with danger from then on, even at the risk of getting his heart broken.

6. What fic has the happiest ending?

Oh, definitely 17 Suits (Explicit, Malec, Shadowhunters)! Alec and Magnus find common ground over the one thing that pushed them apart all throughout the story.

Magnus Bane, a sworn bachelor, receives his fair share of wedding invitations on a regular basis and makes sure his friends get through their weddings unscathed. One dark, wounded and mysterious Alec Lightwood is not going to rain on Magnus’ parade as he celebrates the best day of his loved ones’ lives.

7. Do you write crossovers?

Not really, I don’t read them either. I do write fusion fics though, specifically Pokémon like I did with Idris Tour Sweethearts (General, Malec, Shadowhunters) for instance.

Alec is fascinated by dragon types and has learned everything about them in books. He’s always dreamed of finding them in the wild and see them for himself, but he never went on his journey with a Pokémon and now, it’s too late to travel the world. Except, is it? Alec’s siblings are all grown up, and he doesn’t have a job — or friends — to keep him in his hometown. He could leave and attempt to complete the Pokédex, hopefully meeting some dragons along the way. Maybe he’ll even find love, like so many Idris Tour sweethearts before him… But the winner of Pokémon beauty Contests, Top Coordinator Magnus Bane, couldn’t possibly want more than one night in Alec’s arms. Right?

8. Have you received hate on ao3?

No? but then I usually assume good faith so unless you’re insulting me or my mom I’ll either think the comment is clumsy but the person meant well, or just move on.

9. Do you write smut?

Yeah, surprisingly. I was never really interested in smut, would even skip smut scenes for the longest time but eventually I found it useful in some stories and then I made a point of doing kinktober (Malec, Shadowhunters / Sterek, Teen Wolf) and smutember (Yalex, Alex Rider) just to figure out how to fit the prompts into some ideas and it’s been a lot of fun!

10. Have you had a fic get stolen?

I don’t think so or at least I’m not aware if there has been one. I did occasionally share ideas that got passed around and written by somebody else which is always uncomfortable but that’s on me for both sharing and not mentioning it wasn’t up for grabs lmao

11. Have you had a fic get translated?

Nope! I thought of translating a couple myself though, I’m just too lazy x)

12. Have you co-written a fic?

Several! Even though @spark-draws will deny it I do consider them a co-writer because they came up with a good chunk of the outline and I implemented major edits due to their feedback on The Mortal Instruments: Skyrim (Mature, Malec, Shadowhunters).

Magnus and Alec are now enemies who have been saddled up with a mysterious quest to save Skyrim. Will rivalry, distrust and fierce and dangerous dragons get the better of them? Or will they find some much needed guidance on the slopes of the Throat of the World, where a mysterious brotherhood holds some of the answers they so desperately need?

I also recently worked on Vastly Different Things (Teen, Yalex, Alex Rider) with @polarnachtsblog as a thank you fic for our pinch-hitter in the Yalex Secret Santa. We literally wrote parts of the fic on our own then merged it all together with minor edits and transitions, it was a lot of fun!

Alex almost gets tossed from a helicopter into a river in Chile, and spends some quality time with a certain assassin.

13. What's your fav ship?

Right now I’m on a roll for Sam Carter x Ba’al (Stargate SG-1) but my one true pairing is definitely Helen Blackthorn x Aline Penhallow (Shadowhunters). I love them. so much.

14. What's a WIP you want to finish but never will?

I don’t know, I’ve completed WIPs several years after I started them so I tend to not consider a fic discontinued until I’ve deleted the fic from the platform, and considering most of my WIPs have not been posted anywhere… ;)

15. What are my writing strengths?

I’m really good at “getting it done” I think because productivity breeds productivity. If you get started and power through long enough, it becomes easier and you can keep going and enjoy yourself while you’re at it!

Same with edits, I’m not afraid to change things (although I can be lazy). It also applies to plotting/outlining, I’m an excellent planner, sometimes too much of a planner though.

Style wise I’ve been told I’m good at writing fight scenes and setting, I do enjoy my descriptions!

16. What are my writing weaknesses?

I’ve always thought I’m terrible at dialogue!

I can get stuck in a writing slump from too much planning.

17. What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages on ao3?

I used to really like it, especially since I’m bilingual myself. I wanted to use some fancy script to have the translation appear when you hover or link it to the notes and then back to the exact line in the story but I couldn’t figure it out xD

Nowadays I like the much simpler “POV character doesn’t speak the language” or “blah blah blah, they said in French”. You get it or you don’t x)

18. What's the first fandom you wrote for?

Either Naruto or Harry Potter, let’s say Harry Potter because there is a completed fic I can actually remember lmao.

19. What fandom/ship have you not written but want to?

Definitely Stargate SG-1 these days because I’m on a Sam/Ba’al binge!

20. What's your fav fic you've written?

Right about now it’s Blue for Brooklyn (Teen, Malec, Shadowhunters) but it may change depending on my mood!

The miscellaneous recurring 2003 turtle thoughts

It's ironic that one of the complaints I've seen regarding the 2003 series is that it's too serious and the turtles don't act like teenagers enough, yet the two seasons where they have the most opportunities to behave like normal kids—Fast Forward and Back to the Sewer—have mixed to negative reception among fans.

Overall, the turtles are one of those "tragic teenage protagonist" cases. The fact that they're giant mutant turtles already denies them a normal social life with other teenagers their age, but they're constantly being thrown into traumatic life or death situations that would break the toughest of trained army soldiers and rarely get a moment to breathe. It makes the brief moments where we see them goofing around, joking with each other, and otherwise just acting their age that much more meaningful. (And also why Leo's PTSD arc from Season 4 hurt so bad; the All Hallows Thieves filler episode in particular stands out because it's a Halloween episode and yet Leo is the only one not having fun.)

Side note: It really is difficult to tell how much time passes in 2003. The first five seasons take place over the course of about two years, but sometimes it feels like they apply seasonal weather such as snow not because it makes sense chronologically, but because the plot of the episode wouldn't work otherwise ("The Golden Puck" from Season 2, which is a very good episode btw, is a prime example of this.)

I haven't actually watched a whole lot of Demon Slayer (I think I watched through episode 20 of the first season before I forgot about it) but the opening themes fit the turtles so well. NateWantsToBattle's English cover of Gurenge is especially good if you're imagining it as being sung from Leo's perspective.

How does Silver's theme from Sonic 06 fit Don so well? Maybe not in terms of lyrical content, but in terms of instrumentals. The LB vs JS Remix and Nightlight versions especially.

I know I was giving The Next Mutation grief for giving Venus plastron boobs, but I was looking through the official character art for the 2003 series and the way the turtles stomachs are shaded on occasion... I'm not denying that they have six packs hidden inside of their shells considering how well built they are, but I don't think those muscles are capable of bulging through their plastrons.

Demisexual Leonardo. I have made my final decision on this and will stand by it.

So the short answer is 0 for everything because I don’t read tags anymore because they never affected my choice to read a story the way a summary, snippet, rec or author gushing about their work would. But! even choosing with these methods the tropes bleed through so here are my rankings

Age gap: -1

I’m not opposed to it per se, I just don’t see the appeal. I just finished a book with side characters in a relationship with a big age gap and I tried to be open minded but it creeped me out a bit. Although I did write Baz as a 200 year old vampire so I guess there’s that! 😅

Codependency: +5

Yeah, give me two people leaning on each other. I think we suffer in silence too much. I think we need human connection. Gimme two people who aren’t afraid to ask for what they want. Yeah sure, it can be problematic but mostly I think it’s nice.

Obsession/possessiveness, jealousy: +5

I fucking love possessive Simon. Sometimes this trope isn’t done well in other stories but with Snowbaz I eat that shit up.

Opposites (grumpy/sunshine etc): +8

I looooove it. Working past your stereotypes? Becoming more open minded? Seeing someone on a deeper level? Grabby hands

Enemies to lovers, Enemies with benefits: +8

This is the majority of Snowbaz so obviously, yes. Sometimes I’m not a fan outside the fandom, but here it’s so good. And enemies with benefits??? Please. Cue me foaming at the mouth reading Restoration Ecology by @captain-aralias or it’s fabulous remix by @royalasstronaut.

Friends with benefits: +8

Yes please. As long as there’s some deep feelings involved, even if they come later, I’m there. And often with friendship you’ve got the platonic love there that sometimes builds to more so yes. More Than Friends by @fatalfangirl is an EXCELLENT example of this where they are just pining idiots from day 1 and I’m obsessed.

Sex to feelings: +10

FUCK YES. I will take it every time. I love sex, I love a good slow burn, I love sex with feelings. Make them earn it? PLEASE. Someone Wicked does this so well. @artsyunderstudy is the queen of sex with feelings.

Fake dating/relationship: +8

Yup, this is a goodie. even just fake friendship a la RWRB. Lovely. But yeah when their dating and they gotta kiss to sell it? And the other thinks they are faking but really that’s how they feel? Mmm hmm. Yummy.

Friends to lovers: +10

Y’all know this is my thing. I’ve written it several times. They love each other SO MUCH but they are too afraid to ruin their friendship so they feel they can’t make a move. The angst is right there and I love it.

Found family: +1

This can be great, but if that’s the whole premise I might pass. Fluff can be fun but if that’s all there is, I usually pass. But! If this is a theme in a longer fic with more complex plot? Then it can be really good.

Hurt/comfort: +1

Idk why but I associate this tag with shorter fics that just doesn’t actually hit that hard. Like, the hurt is little and immediately followed by the comfort. Give me the BIG angst. Hurt me good before you make it better. I looooove angst with a happy ending. So if that’s what we are doing then give it to me good.

Love triangle: -3

Meh. I always feel bad for the odd one out. I don’t like seeing the pining and angst without the pay out. And usually this is how it goes. If the third person is an asshole you just have to nudge out of the way, then maybe.

Poly, open relationship: -3

I’m actually quite curious about this and I bet it can be done right, but I usually go for a single OTP. Give me your recs though, I’d love to be convinced otherwise.

Mistaken/hidden identity: +10

Hell yes. They didn’t know it was that person all along? And they fell for them anyways? Fantastic. Even better is when they fall for the same person twice. Both hidden and not. And then! All is revealed and it’s the same person! Think love letters from a secret admirer, masquerade, etc. I mean there’s a reason network connectivity problems is the highest kudosed fic in the fandom.

Monsterfucking: +10

And bless this fandom for introducing me to it and going whole hog with our boys and their monster parts.

Pregnancy: -3

Been there, done that, don’t find it sexy. There’s some good mpreg fics in this fandom though so there are exceptions! Orange Juice by @orange-peony is a GREAT one that I really adored. This fandom just really delivers in any area.

Second chance: +9

Yes please! Unless own person is truly awful and doesn’t deserve it, but typically I love someone getting a chance to try and learn from their mistakes and try again. Don’t we all wish we could have a second chance at something?

Slow burn: +10

ITS SO SATISFYING! The payoff is so good after they’ve worked for it. My favorite.

Soulmates: +1

I love when characters can choose each other despite their destiny. I need conflict. I don’t know if I’ve read any Snowbaz ones. I think because I like them at odds and assume they won’t be. @artsyunderstudy is giving me recs to help me see the light LOL.

I have read all your hockey fics multiple times and was desperate for more yourblues, so I decided to give your One Direction fic a shot, and I should never have hesitated, it was SO GOOD. MY HEART. Full disclosure this is the first One Direction fic I have ever read (I am not a 1D hater but I am also not a 1D fan, I think I was about the right age demographic they were going for but it somehow passed me by and I would be hard-pressed to name all of them or more than two of their songs), so I have no comparison, but it was just. So good. It made me care about them so much and I wanted to give both Harry and Niall hugs throughout this. Also loved the song components! So well done. I just want them to be happy.

(And not to bring things back to hrpf, but the whole second chance romance thing kept making me think of McStrome and that was an additional source of delight.)

oh anon, this is so nice ❤ i had a lot of fun writing that fic, i'm glad you enjoyed it! i'm going to tell you a secret: i was never in 1d fandom either. full respect to those who were, because they truly lived through the wars, but when one direction was happening i was a) mostly only listening to pop-punk music from mid-sized bands and b) already uhhh in hockey fandom. i just live here. i've always been here.

anyway the point is i could not name all of them either and had knowingly heard maybe two songs. and then for some reason in the midst of peak pandemic lockdown i read this fic (i really don't know why i did that, i'm not usually someone who reads fics for fandoms i'm not it) and it just? did something to my brain? and i spent the next year of my life locked in my house devouring every piece of one direction content i could find. i was on a little break from hockey at the time because the bubble season stressed me out too much so i needed something to do with myself, i guess. i was watching every youtube video. i was backreading my former-1d friends' tumblrs. i was buying shit on ebay. and i wrote that fic.

honestly it all kind of feels like a fever dream now. like, i'm pretty proud of that fic but i also regularly kind of forget about it? lmao. that whole phase is just kind of lost in the void in my brain where i put all the lockdown stuff. but i am proud of it!! i'm so glad you enjoyed it!

re: the mcstrome of it all, i DEFINITELY remember thinking while writing it "hm this really is just tnno remixed for different guys huh" so you are spot on 😂

when yall people headcanon adult/teen dipper as like this softboy youre all literally so wrong. adult/teen dipper would not be cute or sweet he would be a nightmare and a menace. he would be a regular on r/askreddit. he would eat 1 (one) edible when he's 16 and then put "stoner" in his social media bios until he's 30 and actually smokes weed and hates it. the only thing stopping him from using 4chan in this day and age is the alt-right pipeline and he regularly converses with incels on reddit "just to understand their viewpoint." he listens exclusively to abba until he's thirteen and discovers radiohead and suddenly he goes down a pipeline and listens to my bloody valentine and the smashing pumpkins and the mountain goats and maybe a little bit of nine inch nails but only year zero and the popular songs because he pretends to be pretentious but in reality he plays the five nights at freddy's song on repeat. adult/teen dipper wears flannel but not in a cute way because he's the kind of person who believes jackets only need to be washed biannually and also horrible graphic tees. you know the ones. mabel got him into homestuck and he only reads it to post horrible theories on reddit like ARE MOM AND BRO THE SAME PERSON???? He is not a funko pop collecter i will give him that but he does own like three. he completely unironically plays magic the gathering and yugioh. he shows up to conventions with mabel and she's dressed in incredibly elaborate cosplay. but he is wearing literally nothing but jeans, a hoodie that smells like gender dysphoria incarnate, and a shirt he stole from ford that says "MATHLETES CHAMP '77" because there was literally nothing even remotely clean in his own collection of horrible graphic tees. and they're all posters for horrible sci-fi movies he likes unironically, shirts that say things like "SARCASM IS MY THIRD LANGUAGE (KLINGON IS MY SECOND)" and he legitimately thinks they make him cool and even mabel has no appriciation for them. you people also have the wrong headcanon of adult/teen MABEL. she has seventeen piercings, and horrible tacky tattoos. every time she gets a new boyfriend she gets it tattooed on her arm and never stops doing this so by the time she's 40 her arm looks like RYAN JORDAN MICHAEL JEROME KYLE KARKAT (she dated a homestuck fan she met at a convention and regrets it) and she thinks to herself maybe that was a bad idea. while dipper is pretentious despite having NOTHING to be pretentious about, mabel listens to artists with 3 followers on soundcloud that are just cartoon sound fx remixes and she is in no way pretentious about it because she's also a diehard kesha fan. she probably dresses like a mix between a fairy-kei girl and nicki minaj, but will settle for less when the need for practicality arises. she is an unironic juggalo. she got dipper into homestuck and was an og rosemary shipper despite being straight. she is the camp hetero. she probably pokes holes in literally everything to attach earring backs to them. she does art commisions online of chibi boys because she's desperate for money. she wouldn't make fun of anyone for being into stuff she thinks is mildly lame. but only because she's saving all that rudeness for dipper because they both know he deserves it. but she would punch a neonazi. no hesitation. give the girl some credit. anyway those are my horrible horrible headcanons. and post.

Do you have any tips for naming a fan continuity? I have one that I've been thinking about for a while, but titles have just never been my strong suit

I'd suggest starting by looking at canon continuity/cartoon/franchise names, there's an awful lot of them that go beyond just the cartoons you could probably name off the top of your head (this also helps with logo design, if you're into that). We've got everything from just a description of medium (Animated), to ridiculous anime titles (Supergod Masterforce), to single generic relevant words (Prime, Energon), to single generic irrelevant words (Zone), to descriptions of the plot or premise (Rescue Bots, Combiner Wars). Each name has a different vibe and it's up to you what kind of title you think fits best. Is it meant to be quick and snappy, full of gravitas, some kind of song lyric fanfiction title, economically descriptive, or something else? If you have some kind of anthology or vignette series in a larger continuity, you could even go for split story-plus-canon titles (Aligned and its various shows), or just make up one of those multiverse dimension names (Tyran, Primax, etc) and use that!

Is there a concept, gimmick, or theme particularly prevalent in your canon? Is there a quote, ideal, defining moment, or notable symbol or metaphor that has a lot of narrative or worldbuilding focus? Is there something about Transformers you just like and want to strongly associate with your continuity?

Maybe also consider browsing the masterlist here, I know there's more floating around that haven't been added to the list but it's a pretty good selection anyway, and you can see some of the choices people made and how their titles are relevant to their work. I'm not hot at titles either to be honest, but let me dissect some of my own choices for you (some of these I haven't even posted about so bear with me):

SNAP: acronym of the Japanese title, translated from "The New Primes of Cybertron". It's a magical girl anime, so I wanted an actual anime-esque title. It's vaguely descriptive of premise or plot and the acronym itself is very fun and easy to remember, used far more than the actual title.

Remixed: the continuity is based on shuffling around characters to fill each other's roles, aka remixing them with one another til you have something familiar but brand new. It's an obvious but very fitting title.

Masterforce NEO: a canon taking some aspects of Supergod Masterforce and reimagining them, not as a rewrite but as something new. As that's the main premise and inspiration, I'm not even trying to come up with something unique, rather relying on the distinction of adapting an already existing canon name into my own thing

other misc titles I've come up with have been similar: Acceleration for a canon based on racing, Return of the Primes for one about rediscovering ancient history, etc

Long story short, look at what you already have, and from that material draw out something cool, important, memorable, or just something you like. Run it by your friends, stick the word Transformers in front of it, play around with synonyms or acronyms or spelling, what have you. Don't take it so seriously that you scare yourself off of working on it!

Tag Game: Ten True Facts About Me

Rules: Share 10 facts about yourself and tag other blogs! I want to get to know my mutuals, and the people I follow a little bit :) The facts can be about anything!

1. I used to be big into cosplay. I used to hand make cosplay costumes, props, and once even attempted to make a wig. I have only ever been to a few conventions but I miss the community I used to share with fellow cosplayers pre-Covid.

2. I had an Anime Amino if anyone remembers that app. This was back during an age before discord. Back during the time I took a break from Tumblr (2015-17? Maybe) I started on Amino to look for community and friendship during a time I felt like I had none. Amino was literally just a mix of Tumblr with random blogs and discord with its chat rooms option. People mostly used it for RPs and other community events. It was a great time honestly kinda sad they killed the site.

3. I love weird ass music. I’m not talking like “oh that new album by famous artist with a weird name” no! I’m talking music that will make normal people run screaming into the next room. Give me remixed pirate/Viking songs all day long. You don’t even have to remix them. I’ll take them as is if you’re feeling spicy. Heavy metal versions of songs that have no right being metal (Disney songs, pop songs, country). 🤤. Those artists are doing gods work. Random 80’s songs. The sluttiest dirtiest music you can think of. Jazz. All of it man I love all of it as long as it’s weird.

4. My very first fan fiction was written on fan fiction.net. I used to have two accounts it was because I forgot my password for the first one but then I used the second account more than the first so it all worked out. I kinda want to archive the stuff from those accounts onto AO3 even though I’m not in those fandoms anymore. Just so I have the content.

5. My first ever crushes were on Shego and Kim Possible from said show. I didn’t know how to verbalize this as a kid so I told everyone I loved Justin Timberlake from *NSYNC.

6. I’ve been thinking about publishing a few books. I have some ideas for a few novels, series, and kids books. I just don’t know where to start or even if they’re worth while.

7. I have two dogs and two cats! My puppies names are Maizy and Chihiro. They are both Labs and are just the cutest angel babies! My cats are Eevee and Oreo. Eevee is chunk rescue baby. Oreo is our prissy princess who needs to be held at all times.

8. I have never once reset one of my animal crossing villages. I’ve had three on three different games. Game Cube, DS, and Switch. I always do my best to name the village perfectly , I would do anything in my power to have the perfect neighborhood/ villagers, I would even piss off Mr. resetti back when he was a thing just to get a second chance to try an interaction again.

9. I’m thinking about starting to stream on Twitch. Nothing too serious. Just something fun that I can try to do!

10. I am a huge collector. I collect many things lol old books, (first editions, cool instructional books, books published earlier than 1955, All the Stephen King novels), ART! I love art. All of it. Prints from artists I buy from. Hand made pieces I randomly find at art fairs and craft shows, paintings, those mystery boxes that hold figurines in them I fucking love them so god damned much.

Thoughts on MYM #1 (”Izzy Does It”)

Like I said before, I decided to watch one MLP Make Your Mark episode per week, to make them last. So far I’ve only watched “Izzy Does It”. No spoilers for later episodes please.

I’m just going to yammer about my thoughts on the episode and speculate on what might be coming next. :)

First of all, the animation is VASTLY improved from the 44 minute Make Your Mark special. The seagulls look cute instead of possessed, the character movement doesn’t have any janky sped up moments, and Sunny’s lips don’t look weird anymore, which I think is due to them changing the lighting.

My guess is the special was rushed because of corporate demands or something.

Plot summary: It’s Sunny’s birthday and Izzy (sort of by accident) makes her a hair ornament. Pipp shows it off on her social media, leading to all the other ponies wanting one. But Izzy doesn’t know how to replicate it.

Pipp tells Izzy to make the same thing “but better”; Sunny encourages Izzy and tells her to return to her roots. Roots . . . trees . . . Bridlewood! Izzy heads off to her old home and discovers an abandoned scooter along the way. Meanwhile at home Pipp has run into a creative block on her new song.

Just as she’s feeling guilty about giving Izzy “bad advice”, Izzy triumphantly returns. She basically misinterpreted Sunny’s and Pipp’s advice to create her own moral about being herself. She also fixed / refurbished the old scooter to become her new playset unicycling cart. Izzy then reveals that she did a remix of one of Pipp’s old songs, to Pipp’s delight.

While all this is happening, a unicorn without a cutie mark, Misty, is sneaking around town at the behest of a villainous alicorn named Opaline. Misty leaves Sunny a magic hand mirror that allows Opaline to spy on the ponies, though not when they’re inside the lighthouse.

Thoughts on the plot: This was a pretty good episode, but it had some parts that could have been made clearer. Like it was kind of odd that Izzy was fretting about other ponies wanting the hairband when she wasn’t shown being mobbed by them or anything. I think it would’ve worked better if she had a stall at the craft fair and initially she’s happy fulfilling unique requests for crafts, but after Pipp’s video the other ponies ONLY want replicas of the hair ornament and Izzy feels pressured / uncreative / stops having fun.

I would’ve cut the stuff with Pipp having creative block and instead Pipp’s subplot could have been, idk, she’s well-meaning but she gives advice thoughtlessly. Like for HER pleasing her fans is extremely important but maybe for Izzy fulfilling her creative spark is more important. She gives Izzy advice, Izzy runs off to Bridlewood, Pipp worries that her advice caused Izzy to run away, she realizes she should think her advice through.

And then obviously the scooter has to be in there, it’s a toy tie-in, so the finale could be Izzy returning to her booth at the craft fair with all her new supplies and this time when the townsfolk want the replica hair ornament she’s like “Let’s try this OTHER craft first, okay?” (Pipp would be helping with this since she’s the confident friend.) And obviously the ponies love their unique craft, which combines Izzy’s creativity and their own.

Random thoughts:

Misty is soooo cute! I love her and I hope with all my heart that she eventually becomes a main cast member. (They don’t have a blue pony yet!) ALSO that would mean they would have two unicorns, two pegasi, and two earth ponies, which I always love.

Opaline is a wonderful villain, she’s so extra. She’s SO MEAN to poor Misty yet I love every line that comes out of her mouth. “Don’t think, you sound foolish.”

Opaline claims she found Misty as a lost foal and took her in; I kind of think she’s lying and, like, murdered her parents. Maybe that’s too dark for MLP though. Unlike Sunny, Opaline’s alicorn horn and wings are real (not translucent) and she is taller than the average pony. About Princess Cadence’s size.

Tidbits from Opaline and Misty:

- there used to be a cloaking enchantment around Equestria

- Opaline gloats that she’ll be “even more powerful than I was before”

- Misty’s observations about cutie marks are the first time they’ve been mentioned directly in the G5 shows

- Misty doesn’t have a cutie mark but Opaline does

- Opaline talks about getting an ally to help her infiltrate Equestria (not Misty)

Other Random Thoughts

It feels like they don’t know what to do with Sunny. It’s too bad because I felt like she was well-developed in the movie. Adventurous, impulsive, a little sarcastic at times . . . Okay, her main life-goal has been accomplished but she should still have a personality!

The humor in this episode was also a big improvement over the 44 minute special. (With the exception of Izzy building a tower of junk for Sunny’s birthday which was just ???. But yeah, overall much improved.)

Izzy felt closer to Movie Izzy in this than to Tell Your Tale Izzy, who has mostly felt like Pinkie Pie 2.0. I’m a big fan of Movie Izzy, so yay! Also the rainbow picture looks a lot like the original MLP logo. They also played the jingle right at the beginning of the episode!

At one point Opaline says, “So these are the weak little ponies that brought back magic?” and Misty says, “Almost like any pony could do it.” Which I like. I don’t think Sunny Starscout was the only pony who could have brought back magic; I think she was simply one of the few ponies willing to try.

Finally, here’s a screenshot of Toots, Sweets, and Windy hanging out. I just thought it was cute. Also Sweets has a scrunchie in her tail, which I love.

Nortey Dowuona: Xander went through a lot in that series. He got his music career ground into nothingness before he became an adult, got shocked into incoherence by a lame who has a godawful ponytail, got cussed with homophobic lies, it's great to hear him launch off these exciting house drum programming that gets so big in the mix he kinda has to be - wait, his name is Troye? Wow, what else did they take -- he had an actual singing career and acting career before this. He's never been named Xander? decided to just dance to the song and fix the blurb later, never does [8]

Oliver Maier: Sivan's a curious export to me, a mostly middling songwriter who converts more and more fans each cycle simply by existing, like the Luigi who wins by doing absolutely nothing of pop music. I don't begrudge him it, I just don't see his angle. "Rush" is a certifiable Big Tune™, but to me that has more to do with the shouty lads on the hook than Troye, who flits around like a cherubic chaperone. [7]

Will Adams: So the solution to my problem with Troye's just-okay voice (besides Hot Chip remixes) is to baton pass the chorus to a full Village People chant. Brilliant! It's the cherry on a just-too-tailored piano-house instrumental, which makes me think that maybe he should phone Disclosure for some collabs. [6]

Katherine St Asaph: A rare show of genuine tension and heat from Troye Sivan. But that's not due to Troye so much as the heady fog of reverb and posse of mega-masc guys he surrounds himself with. [7]

David Moore: It's too late for me to grok Troye Sivan's whole deal, I think, but this reminds me of the fake-seeming dance tracks I constantly pull from Spotify's new music playlists, most of which are designed for Dance Mode [picture of purple disco ball] and Beast Mode [picture of buff shirtless man holding dumbbells] and presumably many other Modes that I can't imagine this particular song hyping me up for or, more accurately, helping me to survive with only minor shoulder injuries. Will Rivitz: Free us from the tyranny of gang vocals. [5]

Michael Hong: Not really a radical reinvention -- if "Dance to This" were dialed to a 5, then this is amped up to a measly 7, and Troye's been way more explicit with underage hookups and poorly disguised flower metaphors -- but damn if this isn't fun. [7]

Thomas Inskeep: Why isn't Troye Sivan an international, honest-to-goodness, radio-saturating popstar?! (Spoiler alert: it's because he's so openly gay in his lyrics, which in 2023 is absurd but there you fucking go.) Sivan's vocals here are simultaneously confident and dreamy, and goddamn, "Rush" is so swoony it actually feels like the rush you get meeting someone on a dancefloor and just connecting, immediately. And also, I mean, poppers; he clearly knows of what he sings. [8]

Wayne Weizhen Zhang: This summer, after seeing Barbie & Renaissance in the same day, my friend found poppers on the floor of our favorite drag bar that were so strong that I'm convinced to this day that I have brain damage. Was it a coincidence that this happened two weeks after the release of this song? I think not. [7]

Ian Mathers: In everything I'd read about the Troye Sivan album I don't recall seeing anyone mention "he sometimes sounds a bit like Friendly Fires now" and honestly I would have liked to have had that information. [9]

Alfred Soto: I would've liked Troye Sivan as a model. Introverted but not shy, fluent in the ways in which a life of constructing an identity on one's phone brings new adventures and stirs up familiar fears, Sivan isn't coy. "Rush," though, reminds me of Jessie Ware's latest album: the forced euphoria of a camp counselor with two weeks to go before the end. [5]

Jacob Sujin Kuppermann: An all-time great song to jump up and down and chant along to. To make beautifully head-empty pretty bro music like this is a true gift that must not be squandered. [9]

Leah Isobel: "Rush" is suitably aerodynamic, with the exception of its blocky football-chant chorus. It's like a beer commercial plopped into a DJ set, and its masculinity comes across as glib compared with the airy pianos and bouncy bongos. But I get that Troye is the chronicler of emotional distance within intimacy, and I like that he takes some time out from huffing poppers with the boys to wink, "This shit is so much fun"; that's the kind of distance that feels true, the moment when your brain surfaces just long enough to realize how ridiculous it is to be a body in space. [6]

Brad Shoup: The video version offers a deal: you get a post-chorus without violent panning between fore- and background, but also a comedown outro about loving "with reciprocity". I'll take the wispy original, which tries to bulk up with a great bro chorus but ultimately glides around corners, pleading for pleasure. ("Kiss it when you're done" is such a good line. I can't get over it.) Also, two-and-a-half minutes is the right duration for this kind of churning yet weightless pop-house encounter. [7]

Crystal Leww: There's a Tiktok floating around where a girl asks where are the men who like women who look like Troye Sivan. While it's extremely funny, it also speaks to the fact that there's a real dearth of men in Western pop who are out here popping their pussy and putting their whole back into it. "Rush" is a full pop song with a curated, cohesive vibe throughout the song, a hook that doesn't stick out in a sea of blah before and after it, and a choreographed silly little dance that Troye and his boys do. The bar is in hell -- we're lucky we at least have "Rush." [6]

Alex Ostroff: On the Something to Give Each Other press tour, Troye pointedly raved about how inspired he is by Janet. Intriguingly, his standom doesn't focus on her Imperial Phase: Not her declaration of Control, the politics of Rhythm Nation 1814, nor the personal discovery of janet. Not even The Velvet Rope's blend of the internet, queer activism, kink & self-empowerment which left such an indelible mark on the last decade of R&B and underground dance music. No, when asked for his three favourite Janet songs, Troye's picks are 'Together Again", "All Nite (Don't Stop)" and "SloLove." Two-thirds of those are from Damita Jo, Janet's horniest record. Damita Jo featured "Warmth" and "Moist," back-to-back odes to fellatio and cunnilingus so explicit that Janet cut them from the clean version altogether. That feels right for the Troye era that launched with "Rush." It's not that Troye hasn't explored sexuality before -- Bloom's title track is famously a bop about bottoming, after all -- but those were his takes on "Let's Wait Awhile," "Anytime, Anyplace," or the psychosexual therapy moments on Velvet Rope, where sex was a window into his emotional state and romantic relationships. Here, Troye just delves into the joy of spontaneous lust and delivers a femme top anthem where his masc bros chant about wanting your touch. He whispers "Breathe '1, 2, 3' / take all of me" and instructs you to "Kiss it when you're done". Like Damita Jo, 'Rush' can sometimes feel uncomfortable or cringey (is the glory hole 12" vinyl packaging too much or exactly enough?), but it also undeniably fucks. [8]

Joshua Minsoo Kim: Earlier this year, a relatively popular musician saw a tweet I made that called their music bad, and responded with a quote tweet that derisively called me a twink. It was wonderful. I have never been called a twink before, and never will be again given my body type, but it started to make me think about all the things I'll never experience in life because of the ways in which we play into type when it comes to sex. Or maybe that's just me being pessimistic. Anyways, how about those meatheads chanting here? [6]
